Sinai Camel Race
When visiting Sharm el Sheikh and staying in the glitzy downtown area of Naama Bay it is often quite easy to forget you are in Sinai. However every year many old time ‘Sharmers’ make the journey into the desert to watch one of Sinai’s greatest events, the annual camel race between the Tarabeen and Muzeina Bedouin tribes. This is the true heritage of Sinai and a major event in the area which hundreds of Bedouins and visitors attend every year. The race is located in a remote wadi in Sinai. This year everyone braved the cold and camped out in minus temperatures and braved sleet storms just to see this amazing spectacle. The race took place on the 10th and included prized racing camels and talented jockeys from each tribe. It’s run over 30km and as part of the fun and festivities cars follow the track. This little insight to Sinai’s heritage is courtesy of the Wilderness Venture Egypt group of Facebook.

WELCOME TO THE MOST EXTRAVAGANT EXTRAVAGANCY THE HUMAN EYE CAN BEHOLD… PLEASE WELCOME THE STARS OF THE PRODIGIOUS KIDS CIRCUS COMPANY ‘S MOST SPECTACULAR SHOW ON EARTH!!!” – The proud and loud voice of the Ringmaster calls to the crowd in the breeze of the winter evening by the stage at Genena City. ACTIVITIES beautiful story through a perfect, one and a half hours long circus performance.
But the truth is, we do have a circus school in our city and they do have regular spectacular stage performances. On the 13th of December everybody was invited to enjoy one of their amazing performances at Genena City. The show told the audience a very special story; performed by the students of the Prodigious Kids Circus School who are all dedicated and well trained dancers and acrobats on trapezes and suspended hammocks. The story, titled as “The Journey of Children”, started with babies being brought to our world by storks, innocent and pure. It continues following them growing up with their dreams to become someone special. One dreamt to become a supermodel, one a famous ballerina, and another is to be a princess and many more. Following their dream, working hard to become that special person, during the show they all achieve what they wanted to be, but in the process they all have lost the sight of human values, such as compassion and generosity. At a certain point during their life, they suddenly see how they became so materialistic and find their way back to being genuine, giving and caring people by sharing all the benefits they received with the less fortunate. This in-depth story was depicted by an extraordinary performance of acrobats and artistic ballet dancing from 10
“ We wanted to send a message to the kids and adults of today, to stop being egocentric and materialistic, it’s great to work hard for our dreams and achieve what we want to be, but we need to remember always to share our blessings with the less fortunate for a better future for all of us.” – said the founder of the school, Erika Posse.
all ages of the children - with the cooperation of the Sharm Ballet School. The performers had beautiful costumes and wonderful moves – a spectacular performance with the creative flair of a real world of the Circus. We saw the same characters in four ages, the same dresses, the same dream, but played by four different children of the corresponding age. The show ends - with all the children participating in the show - by putting their toys, awards and all they have into a big box to give to the poor children. The story is an unbelievable life lesson, actually for all of us given by the tiny artists of the Circus School from the age of 3 till 15. Altogether 34 children and 2 adults performed this
Erika started at her age of 6 with rhythmic and artistic gymnastics. Twirling and piano playing soon came into her life, and then she specialized in trapeze. She has now worked over 20 years in different circuses all around the world, especially in Italy and Spain. In 2010 she arrived to Sharm and one year later she started with her school for children with an aim for them to become real artists on the stage. The acrobats and the aerial techniques the school is teaches, are a very complex. It is difficult and the acrobats need alot of patience and strength. From the first lesson they dive into the world of performance with passion and from the moment they get confident with the tools in the air, this art gives the feeling of both the artist and the spectator, as if the whole act is simply dancing in the air.
MIX January 2015
“Many would say, “ Oh, but I can’t do that!” – but actually we all have what we need to become an acrobat: our own body. You win your fears with dedication, passion, practice and soon you’ll discover, that there are no limits of joy and confidence. But you need to try … and try again.” The school gives lessons to children from the age of 3 up to adults, one can learn to become an acrobat on the trapeze or on aerial silk, can have lessons in twirling (majorettes) or juggling and acrobatic gymnastics. All the dedication that leads to perfection teaches us discipline, patience, confidence, courage and endurance. This special skills show every age how to never give up and that our body is not only there for beauty, but it can move in a way we have never dreamed of before. Anybody can start to train by the school, who has a good medical condition, even if someone is overweight ( max 20 kg) they
can still start to dance in the air. As for the costs, for 35 LE for kids and 50 LE for adults per lesson one can try their limits and discover the passion for something - they would have said before – impossible. They are flexible on the price, they have really convenient monthly subscriptions available. For more info call Erika on 01069185919. Sharm el Sheikh is very unique in the way that it’s a multicultural city. So many different people from different nations gathered to live here; this makes Sharm a very flexible environment and ambience, when it comes to art. This city can easily become the Cradle of Art, especially when more and more educational and interesting schools are appearing around us, just like the Prodigious Kids Circus School. I wouldn’t wonder at all, if in the near future on any international and famous circus stage an artist would appear, who has started the carrier in our beautiful city, Sharm el Sheikh. As far as we said, anybody can do it with enough dedication and passion, without any age or gender restriction, my only question is to you: “What are you waiting for !? “

Maksim Seafood Pleasure By Abby Rhodes
When I misheard a request to review Maksim’s, I was momentarily excited by a trip to Paris and the words “at La Strada” didn’t quite register. I had an image of the famous Parisian bistro and my mouth watered at the prospect of French cuisine. Finally reality got a grip and I remembered the cute looking seafood place tucked in the corner of La Strada. OK, not Paris, but I had heard good things about the food and was looking forward to the night out. Armed with notebook and my trusty seafoodloving sidekick I headed to Nabq on a blustery Saturday night. The tables outside looked inviting with their cheerful yellow tablecloths and I could imagine them thronged with diners on a warm summer evening. Alas in mid-winter, two long term Sharm residents are not hardy enough to enjoy the vista so we headed on past the display of fresh fish to the warmth inside. My brief glance at the display was more than enough to know that my sidekick would be well and truly spoilt for choice. The interior of the restaurant is simply decorated and very cosy – Ok that is another way of saying small, but there is room for around 20 diners comfortably. We were dining early, but during 20
busy times it would be well worth booking to ensure a table inside on cold nights. The simple décor gives the place the feel of a small French café where the food is prepared with love and they prefer to spend money on good ingredients rather than fancy lights or flock wallpaper. The lighting is the sort I approve of; bright enough to read the menu and see what you are eating but not so bright that my wrinkles are as prominent as an elephant’s. MIX January 2015
There is a small bar area in one corner and a selection of soft drinks; as true Brits, my sidekick and I asked for beer and Hani the owner very kindly got some for us. I got the feeling that all the staff would gladly go to the ends of the earth to make their guests happy. The service all night was excellent without being over-bearing. The kitchen can be viewed through the service hatch and I was very pleased to see it was spotless when I went to thank Chef Mohammed for our lovely meal. And so to the food.... We were welcomed with a selection of oriental salads including tahina, baba ganoush, tomato salad and aubergine with peppers. There was a choice of soft or crispy flat bread to scoop up the goodies with and we munched happily while perusing the menu. While most seafood restaurants have a small selection of ‘other’ dishes, Maksim’s is pure fruit de mer. All
the favourites and Hani is very particular about sourcing fresh ingredients – no frozen shrimp here! With so much for my seafood loving sidekick to chooses from, we naturally asked for “what’s good” and were greeted by a long list. Finally we made our choices and not long later the starters arrived.
worked really well with the other flavours. For main course I opted for the British favourite of fish and chips. It seemed only right I should check out this most traditional of English foods and I was extremely pleased I did. The batter was light, the fish perfectly cooked, plenty of crispy fries and delightfully presented – the price was right too, very good value in my opinion. The best part for me was that there was not a bone in sight; I have a fear of fish bones and often pick at fillets as if they may be waiting to leap out at me. Sidekick was delighted with his shrimp Provencal and couldn’t stop raving about it. Served with rice and an extra helping of sauce it looked great and smelt wonderful. The shrimp had their tails left on for extra flavour and it was obvious they were really fresh. I didn’t get too much more information as he was too busy eating and making happy noises. I rounded things off with a delicious chocolate pancake, just enough to satisfy a sweet tooth after a big meal; a perfect end to a perfect meal. I hadn’t made it to Paris, but Maksim’s at La Strada gets a thumbs-up from me … and the Sidekick.
The seafood soup was light but still creamy and had ample ‘bits’ in it; the calamari was declared cooked to perfection as it melted in the mouth and the whitefish and shrimp were really tasty. Crispy seafood spring rolls were a nice counter-point to the soup and beautifully presented on a bed of shredded lettuce. Not wishing to point fingers, but Sidekick also had a prawn cocktail which along with the traditional lettuce and sauce came topped with grated egg – a surprising feature that MIX January 2015

In search of
Broadway M
y idea of a night on the town does not normally include a shopping mall, but as I discovered recently, Genena City is rather more than a few shops and cafes. I’ve seen huge American Malls on TV, the ones where you can hold car chases through the middle, but had not realised we had such a beast in Sharm. I knew the place existed because let’s face it you can’t miss the huge signs and enormous plasma screen which now dominate the Naama Bay skyline; what didn’t know was how much more there was to do inside than just shop.

I’d noticed a new sign saying “Broadway” and as a big fan of musicals decided to investigate. My sense of direction is pretty poor though and having never been to Genena before my journey towards the show took me rather longer than expected thanks to the number of distractions (or attractions) on the way. The mall has many entrances it seems and the one I picked took me perilously near the patisserie where they sell some gorgeous looking cakes and I’m told amazing ice cream. Thankfully it was too chilly to stop for icy refreshments so
I moved on past some nice looking shops and down the escalator. A random turn took me to the kid’s zone and all things a child could ever require. It looked good fun but I still needed to find Broadway. Plunging on into the heart of the city (the place seems as big as a small town) I passed the 7D cinema, a bowling alley, billiard hall and signs for an ice skating rink. All of these looked like they would be fun things to do on a night out and I was tempted to stop and check them out but I had my heart set on the show so reluctantly carried on my way.

NIGHT LIFE
More random turns, stairs, more nice looking shops and a supermarket came in sight. It seems that once inside Genena there is everything you could need and a person could spend hours exploring and taking advantage of the entertainment on offer. A few more corners and the bright lights of the Fayrouz Lebanese restaurant drew me out onto the upper terrace. The view over Naama Bay was stunning and stretched out before me was an inviting area packed with cafes, comfy seating, playful fountains and my goal – Broadway! Thanks to my random wanderings, the show had already started – it normally starts between 9pm and 9.30pm – and the stage was alive with dancers in brightly coloured costumes. The terrace was busy with people enjoying the show but I found somewhere to sit and ordered a coffee to keep out the chilly night air. The show progressed with a selection of internationally themed music, plenty of dancing, a magic act, clowns and African dancers. I felt sorry for the guys performing to what I think of as the Wakka Wakka song as their costumes are really colourful but rather scanty and on a cold night they must get frozen – perhaps the dancing keeps them warm. So far there hadn’t been any songs from Broadway musicals but the show was certainly entertaining and had something for everyone, even the children were dancing along and the clowns were a big hit with the kids near me. The high point of the show for me was literally the High Point. Out of nowhere it seemed there was a guy dancing in the sky. A wire stretched from an upper terrace down towards the stage and the dancer was suspended by a very pretty but (in my mind) a dangerously thin piece of material. During his slow descent towards the stage he performed numerous aerial tricks which had my heart in my mouth as I felt sure he must fall. I don’t like heights and what this guy was doing above my head seemed incredibly brave.
As the show drew towards the grand finale there was indeed a Broadway song and a rather nice touch with a parade of flags. The show is followed by a DJ and for those who fancy something stronger than a coffee there is a choice of bars to retire to or you can have a meal at one of the restaurants overlooking Naama. Having now discovered Genena City is much more than ‘just shops’ I’ll be sure to pass by again in a couple of months time to enjoy the new show, the views and perhaps try some of that ice cream once the weather is warmer! LIVING
The Elixir of Youth
Sharm’s emerging new Tourism By Moira Tune
No matter where you live or what country or culture you come from January has always traditionally been the month to kick-start a new lifestyle, start a new regime, re-invent or pledge to become more healthy, younger, fitter etc. and what better place to do it than Sharm. It is no coincidence that Sharm recently hosted the 14th Sharm Derma 2014 conference which saw some of the highest qualified international Dermatologist descend on Sharm to provide a full program of workshops on the latest techniques available in Psoriasis, Hair loss, Plenary and Biologix to name just a few. Sharm is also re-inventing its self and is beginning to emerge as the place to go for a variety of procedures which are expensive in the UK and Europe. We are not talking about some dodgy backstreet cowboy operation – we are talking about highly qualified therapists offering a professional service – it’s a new type of tourism which can boost Sharm’s ailing economy. We are blessed with 40
364 days of sunshine; fresh clean air and a vibrant energy which helps us naturally feel rejuvenated, so why not share this elixir with tourists who have arrived from cold dark and damp climates. Sharm has a large number of highly qualified Dentists. Visitors and residents can have orthodontist and whitening treatments at a fraction of the cost in Europe. The other benefit is you don’t have to wait six to ten weeks for an appointment. Tourists can prebook before they arrive, spend a small amount of time away from the beach and return home with a set of pearly white nashers fit for any front-cover magazine. Vita Clinic has a state-of-the-art dental clinic offering all of the latest products and treatments and also has a highly trained professional therapist offering physiotherapy, cranial sacral therapy and life coaching – so you can even have your bones tweaked and re-aligned and also your life before returning to the cold.
MIX January 2015
Laser surgery for the eyes is yet another emerging treatment giving patients a spec free life returning them to an almost perfect 20:20 sight. The South Sinai Hospital on Peace Road has a specialist clinic providing laser treatment and once again tourists can just pop in for a consultation with no appointment necessary. If they are deemed suitable for the treatment, they can book an appointment the next day. They also have a Dermatologist who offers laser treatment for hair removal, which can be done over a number of sessions.
MIX January 2015
The other phenomenon which is hitting our ‘Peter Pan’ land is the treatment of Botox and filler injections. There are a number of clinics offering this service but make sure that the person is qualified and uses high quality and original products. You want to return home looking refreshed and sun-kissed not like a rabbit caught in the head-lights or worst sporting a ‘trout pout’. There are also a lot of other mild procedures on offer like chemical peels, high-tech facials, eyelash extensions and hair extensions. If the artificial route to a youthful and glowing appearance is not for you, you can always sign up with a personal trainer. Sharm’s lifestyle and climate is attracting more and more professional trainers who have ditched the dark and cold to work in the warm. You can have your very own fitness guru and trainer who will whip you into shape for very reasonable rates. Who knows in the future Sharm could be hosting their very own ‘boot camp’ holidays where tourists happily sign up for a week of weight loss and hard drills – with Sharm’s natural resources of the sea and desert I can’t think of a better place to do it. 41
