100 Issues of MIX When I took that picture of the passing sailboat for the cover of the very first MIX magazine in April 2004 I never imagined we would still be here 99 issues later! My partner Katherine Grabowska and I started Mix with the intention to spread the “Sharm Lifestyle” as our motto (printed on every front cover of Mix) says, this very lifestyle has changed dramatically in the last nine years, but despite the highs and the lows, life in Sharm still remains a unique experience that all who have lived here take with them whenever they move on. Throughout the years we had the chance to work with many wonderful writers whose work made this magazine’s reputation what it is today. To celebrate our 100th issue we decided to add the Nostalgia section where we will be re-running some of the best articles we published in Mix throughout the last 9 years. To all the writers, photographers, designers, sales people, office assistants, money collectors and managers who helped Mix survive so long I would like to send you a big Thank You! Another huge Thanks goes undoubtedly to our Advertisers, whose ads made Mix remain in print and distributed free of charge for all that time. May you carry on the generosity in these hard times :) Last but not least, a big bow of respect to the current Mix team, whose dedication and commitment are making Mix stand strong 100 issues later. Happy Reading, The Publisher

MOVIE STAR CAMEL HELPS EASYJET LAUNCH NEW EGYPT ROUTE FROM STANSTED AIRPORT A MOVIE star camel skipped the Oscars to celebrate a new flight service at Stansted Airport with Uttlesford schoolchildren on Monday. Kokoso, who has appeared in the film,Nativity as well as Channel 4 TV series Location, Location, Location, donned a finely-trimmed fleece at the ceremony which was organised to celebrate easyJet’s new flight to Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt. The 600kg dromedary camel, measuring in at seven feet, had his boarding pass to hand alongside a modestly sized suitcase and was reportedly a bit of a smooth-talker with the easyJet airhostesses. Kokoso is owned and trained by Joseph Fossett and his

wife, Rebecca. Hugh Aitken, easyJet’s UK commercial manager, said: “There isn’t a better way to celebrate the launch of our new Sharm el Sheikh route than by evoking the spirit of Egypt and bringing a camel into the airport for all to see. Will Parkes, Stansted Airport’s communications director, said: “Kokoso the camel certainly hasn’t given anyone the hump today but thrilled passengers and local school children invited along to meet him. “I have no doubt Sharm-el Sheikh will be an extremely popular connection and wish easyJet every success with all the new routes.”

ACTIVITIES

OSTRAKA International Art Gathering in Sharm By Hedvig Jeney There are so many activities and interesting things to do in Sharm on a sunny winter day. Mostly they are related to the beauty of the deep sea or sunbathing on the beaches, maybe excursions somewhere in the neighborhood of the city. But when someone asks me: Let’s go to a museum, a movie or a theater, then the only answer is “Uhmmm, well …” actually there are not many cultural happenings or places to go in Sharm el Sheikh. This is exactly what Mohamed Hemeda wanted to change. Being a painter and a sculptor, working as a decorating artist and interior designer for hotels, private villas and mansions in Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm el Sheikh and also in Saudi Arabia (decorating with sculptures and paintings, designing and creating artful ambiences), 6 years ago he has decided to do something new and innovative for his beloved country and his favorite city, Sharm. In 2007 he established Ostraka (which means in ancient Egyptian language “sketch”) and since then 8 times he brought Art Festivals and Workshops to Sharm el Sheikh. These festivals were held also in many other countries like Holland, Russia, Turkey and Iran. When I heard about the Ostraka Art Festival and Work10

shop in the Laguna Vista Beach Hotel in Nabq from the 18th till the 28th of February and that they are happy to see any visitors, who are interested in Art, I had to see the place for myself. At the lobby of the hotel I met with Hemeda and I asked him, how the idea of Ostraka was born. “After many years working as a decorating artist, I have thought to stop leaving my pieces to the happy clients and selling my talent as a product. I wanted to paint and sculpt for the real sense of art and share both the beauty and the joy of creating them with other people like me. So I have started to organize small workshops for friends to a big success. One fine day, 6 years ago, Ostraka as an organization was born. I am Egyptian and proud to be one, I wanted the world to see, where we are working, what we are able to do and to show my beautiful country to everyone. Although I am from Cairo and my family still lives there, I love Sharm el Sheikh, and would love to invite all to spend time in this amazing city, which has so much to offer. I am dreaming of the day, when we can transform Sharm el Sheikh into a “City of Art” with all the piece we are exhibiting here” he explains. The workshop always leaves the art creations in Sharm. In December 2013 more than 100 sculptor artists from MIX March 2013

all over the world are coming here and will be given big size raw marble blocks to create statues and sculptures, which I would like to spread all over Sharm el Sheikh, as an outdoor exhibition for all the tourists, who are coming here, to see. This way we can promote both art and this wonMohamed Hemeda derful city. The workshop is Ostraka Founder open to everyone to visit, while the artists are working. Where most people would just see a block of marble, a sculptor can see a statue hiding within the raw material, and views his job as chiseling away the exterior and the pieces of marble to reveal the work of art. This is what we want to show to everyone, who is interested in the magic of creativity” he adds.

by the director and parents, and formed a happy, little crowd with buckets of colors to paint around a huge wooden panel. The workshop’s artists were all mixed with the children helping them, guiding and teaching them to the art of painting. “There are 33 artist from 14 countries with us today. From Syria, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Korea, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Norway, Palestine, Bahrain, Lebanon, Belorussia, Slovakia, France and Yemen. This is a workshop for painters this time, but we do have other occasions for sculptors, too” said Hemeda.

To my surprise, I found many children in front of the halls of the workshop. They were coming from the International French School of Sharm el Sheikh, accompanied

more than 3000 members from all around the world. Everybody who would like to participate in Ostraka will be chosen for the variety of techniques or styles regardless of their level of education in art. All they need to do is to fill out an application form and contact Hemeda, there are no boundaries, he welcomes everyone to be part of the workshop.

Through the years, Ostraka became like a family for many artists and still continues to embrace new ones. It has

Osama Okel, a participating painter from Saudi Arabia said “Ostraka and its members became truly like a family to me. This year I brought my son with me, he wants to become a painter. The community here is helping and teaching him. Mohamed Hemeda takes such good care of every one of us, that I don’t need to worry about where my son is and what he is doing. With great principals and foresight he is leading all of us to a successful and happy creativity, it makes us all feel united and the results are left always at city where the workshop takes place, so it has also a value and possibility for many other people to such exhibitions in the future.“ The next painting festival will be held in Sharm next. Anyone interested in being part of it, there is still time to contact Hemeda. If you want to know more about the organization, workshops and festivals, visiting, participating or support them, please visit Ostraka’s Facebook page or contact Mohamed Hemeda on +20 1125505772.

Soho Square’s New Restaurant “Fusion 21” By Samer Elgamal Fusion is a word we hear often these days, when talking about cuisine, it usually refers to the blending of European techniques with Asian flavors. So when I first saw Fusion 21, labelled as a “Mediterranean” restaurant, I really did not know what to expect. Tucked away in a corner between the restaurant building and the main shopping building in Soho square, the entrance to Fusion 21 is easy to miss if you are not looking for it. The restaurant is mainly an open air patio with an attractive Italian “terrace” feel. There is also a mostly indoor corner, with elegant ottoman style furniture. The fact that the restaurant is not right on the promenade provides a welcome cosy privacy to the place. Once seated and presented with the creative, “newspaper” style menu, we start to realize where the name comes from. Fusion 21 offers a variety of Mediterranean dishes, with a small but well-chosen selection of dishes from different countries of that culinary-rich region. The open kitchen not only provides a nice opportunity to watch your dinner being cooked, but also a welcome reassurance of the hygiene and impeccable cleanliness of the restaurant back area. Once past the generous bread basket, we were ready to skip appetizers and go straight to the main course. I had the Salmon a La Milanese, which is an interesting variation of the classic pan fried breaded veal, but made with a fresh Salmon fillet. I had never tried fried Salmon before, and was afraid it might be too greasy or heavy, but to my pleasant surprise it was perfectly done. Presented with a side of mashed potatoes and a creamy basil sauce, my dish was not exactly light, but who cares about light when it tastes that good! Still on the salmon side, my dinner company had the farfalle with salmon, which came out to be equally impressive and equally creamy. Following all the “cream” we treated ourselves to a nice minty shisha smoke, equally served on location, and representing the long tradition of water pipe smoking in the East Mediterranean. Overall Fusion 21 was a very pleasant, smart casual experience, with a well-executed, original menu. The prices were reasonable compared to most good quality restaurants in Sharm, with the added advantage of offering Shisha, alcohol and great food. MIX March 2013

NOSTALGIA Special Section for our 100th Issue

It’s 6pm, the time when many are heading back after a hard day’s diving. It is now that they are forced to hand over their comfort and safety, so closely guarded during the day through their diving activities, to the uncertain agenda of a lurking force surrounding this city we live in. On every street, they lay in wait. Nobody knows when or where, but for certain there is no escape. They appear without warning. This omnipresent force can strike at any time and is something we all have to live with. “Taxi!” I’ve been caught! “Ruweisat please.” And we fly through the back streets to reach the dual carriageway. ‘Slow down!’ I cry, and ‘mind that water truck. If I’m thirsty, I’ll buy a bottle of Baraka from the supermarket’. Joseph, my driver, laughs to himself. He’s heard it all before. I’m not the first back seat driver he’s ever had and certainly not the last. He recognizes me as a local diving instructor and says that if I stop telling him how to drive he won’t tell me how to scuba dive. ‘But you’ve never dived anyway. So you can’t tell me’. I say, smugly. 36

‘And have you ever driven a taxi then?’ ‘Er….no, actually, but it can’t be that difficult!’ He laughs even louder. ‘Right, you’re going diving tomorrow’, I say, knowing that he wouldn’t take me up on the offer. ‘OK, I’ll see you in the morning outside the Ocean Club’. Introductory dives are for just about anyone and often include a day on the dive boat where you can also swim and snorkel. You needn’t be an athlete, but a basic level of fitness and good health is required. Despite sitting in a taxi all day, Joseph easily passed the prerequisites. After a thorough briefing about safety and useful techniques for breathing and moving around underwater, it was time to see what this cheeky taxi driver was made of. So far, he didn’t seem the slightest bit unnerved about going underwater for the first time. In fact, he was thoroughly looking forward to it! We take a giant stride step from the back of the boat and land in clear blue water. Joseph gives me an OK signal to confirm everything is fine. Suddenly, the heavy equipment weighs nothing! We are underwater where we can be weightless. Joseph is elated! I hold onto his jacket and lead him away for a swim at just a few meters deep. Now the tables were turned! Joseph was in my world MIX March 2013

where I had total control! Ha! And like all good Sharm taxi drivers he was off like a bat out of hell! ‘Slow down’ I motioned with a couple of hand signals, but as ever, he wasn’t interested! Perhaps his many years of trying to get from one location to another in the shortest time possible was becoming a hard habit to break! Any notion of my gaining the upper hand over Joseph’s abrupt transition from taxi driver to scuba diver, were right out the window. I have to say that he was a complete natural! We even ‘hovered’ for several minutes, a skill normally perfected after several dives during a beginners course over five days. Visibility was more than 30m. We saw over fifty species of fish during our dive. After forty minutes we arrived back at the ascent line. Joseph gave the up signal. Mmmm, now’s my chance! ‘How much?’ I replied. ‘I passed him my slate and he pencilled, ‘ten pounds’ on it. ‘How about twenty!’ I replied. ‘Ruweisat is 3km away, I only want to go 5 meters’. I clearly had to get up much earlier in the morning to get one over on Joseph! Back on the boat it was smiles all round. ‘Are you sure you haven’t done this before?’ I asked Joseph, half expecting him to say that it was a wind-up and that he was in fact a PADI Course Director in disguise! ‘Never! That was the first time and it was fantastic’. Adam, our photographer, showed Joseph the images he had just taken underwater and mentioned that we’d reached a depth of five meters. ‘Is that all? Can’t we go to thirty?’ Replied Joseph. Back at the Ocean Club where Joseph had parked his taxi, it seemed only right to ask him for a quick burst down the road with him sitting in the back. He shook his head but reluctantly agreed. Sitting in the car I was faced with the less than usual controls I have on my jeep. ‘The gears are on the steering column’ said Joseph. There was a loud crunching sound as I found the first gear and, slowly releasing my foot from the clutch, I was amazed to see the car going backwards! ‘Stick to diving’, said Joseph, now joined by half a dozen of his taxi driver colleagues all having a laugh at my expense. Joseph gave me a lift back to Ruweisat. He was laughing so much he didn’t have the heart to charge me for it. My first free taxi-ride in seven years! In future, I think I’ll keep my big mouth shut!

Sinai Walk

250 kms of Coastline, Two Sore Feet and a Donkey Named Zorro! By Graeme Fordham ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED OCTOBER 2007

It’s not long before I admit to myself that I might have bitten off more than I can chew… Nice idea mate but what on earth was I thinking? The plan was to walk the stunning 250km coastline from Egypt’s Sinai border with Israel to its most popular resort in the south, Sharm El Sheikh. It’s summer, baking hot and I am supremely unfit. I reach a Bedouin village just a few kilometres after setting off on the second day and gladly take the excuse to rest when some wildly gesticulating kids beckon me 38

from across the road. They run up, grabbing friends and clutching bulging rags filled with crafts, shouting to the neighbours along the way. Within minutes the floor is filled with colourful cottons, beads and shells. Before long we’re exchanging some Arabic and I explain what I’m doing in the middle of nowhere. Suddenly I’m being pulled toward the house of the oldest boy, Soliman. He’s no more than 10 years old dressed in a ragged blue Jalabeya and exudes a confidence beyond his years. I am a travelling visitor and tea is on the way. MIX March 2013

The children sit on their heels and point to the only piece of carpet available. “Sit, sit,” they tell me in Arabic, I heave my heavy pack off and make use of the relative comfort, thankful for the relief and imminent tea. I sit back, perched against a corrugated fence and wonder at the culture alive around me; hospitality so deeply and genuinely expressed, warm and instinctive in such young children confirms a sense of comfort I feel at being here, on this walk. I am lucky to be sharing the company of these people. It is a culture that continues to remind me of a shared community life that is disappearing from my own. Suddenly Soliman is nudging me as the tin comes to the boil; I stretch forward cringing at the pain in my shoulders and lower back. I look around me and spot a donkey munching away under a tree whilst reaching for my smoky sweet tea...Now there’s an idea. “How much does a donkey cost then?” The kids seem to think it’s a great idea but I’m not sure if they believe I’m really serious. Come to think of it, neither am I, yet I think of little else as I bid farewell. It’s not long before I pass by another village and meet a Bedouin man named Salem who just might be able to help me. As he drives off back towards Taba in his search, I wonder, just how easy is it to look after a donkey in a desert? The next morning it all happened 40

so fast; a handshake, a couple of hours and a nod later and I’m standing in front of my newly acquired baggage hand and companion, 800 Egyptian pounds lighter. I name him ‘Zorro’ after the white mask-like colouring around his eyes against his black body. Right then, to the smiles and disbelief of the locals we’re on our way.

The sun is high and strong and I’m grateful for the chance to share my thoughts with someone other than the donkey. Now with twenty litres of water and much more room for supplies, six legs instead of two and dawn to dusk walking we make good progress, averaging around 20km a day. The walking is much easier and Zorro seems at home with me, easy to care for and apart from the odd maddeningly stubborn moment he’s quite a pleasure to have around, not least of all because he bears the burden of the luggage. I wake late one morning in Tarabine, around a third of the way, and head out to see Zorro. I stare in disbelief at the pile of ropes where once he stood and my heart MIX March 2013

sinks. Just where does an escaped donkey go? With the help of the villagers, we search for Zorro. After many hours driving and walking to no avail I sleep disappointed, contemplating my options. The chances of finding him are dwindling rapidly with each hour. In the morning I find my spirits low but determined to carry on I decide to reduce my luggage down to the bare essentials and leave some things behind. I feel uplifted at the thought of continuing and getting to the real desert, which starts just a few kilometres down the road after Neweiba.

see my heel through the remaining sole and it appears I’m developing a leathery substitute of my own. So we take our final few steps through the gates at Coral Bay Resort, round to the conference room and prepare for the surprise. The Sharm British School pupils have been following our progress with excitement; plotting on maps and asking about the people, animals and places that I’ve seen along the way via texts. It’s the final assembly and what better way to finish our adventure than to surprise them all with a visit from the real Zorro himself?

Whilst packing I get a call from Salem. Having travelled 40km he is here and wants to help in a last ditch effort. Why not? We head out to the Bedouin village and to my complete and utter disbelief stumble upon Zorro within minutes. Munching merrily away on a piece of cardboard, oblivious to my worry and despair there he is, less than half a kilometre from my camp.

I feel as though I have experienced many expressions of the Bedouin and Sinai life over the years and especially during this walk. It leaves one thing clear in my mind; this is the place for me for a while longer at least, to continue to explore this fascinating community based culture. My hope is that projects such as this will facilitate a mutual appreciation and understanding of the many cultures that now exist here.

Packed and ready, we set off as the sun dips in the sky. Lighter in step and spirit I reflect on the kindness of the people around me during the last days, taking nothing for their time and efforts.

This was a sponsored walk supporting local community projects. For more information, local exhibition details and the complete Sinai series of images visit

Two days into the nothingness with just the lapping sea and Zorro’s steps behind me as company I chance upon a fisherman’s settlement; a Bedouin man with his wife, uncle and two children look up in surprise. The familiar excited welcome from the father drowns out the eldest child’s cries of shock. It’s all a bit too much with the unexpected sight of the donkey.

http://www.graemefordham.com

The sun is high and strong and I’m grateful for the chance to share my thoughts with someone other than the donkey. We converse in simple Arabic and I learn that they all spend most of their time here at the fishing huts as opposed to the neighbouring town of Nuweiba where they have a house. After a fresh Bedouin fish feast supplied by my hosts and a short siesta I take a dip in the lush cool sea. It feels fresh and livens me up ready for my afternoon leg. As with every time that I am invited to eat; the Bedouins take nothing for their hospitality, for a few hours you are just one of the family, passing through. We have passed through the largely unpopulated national park south of Dahab and are nearing the end of the journey as the lights of Sharm glow brighter each night. Two and a half weeks have passed in a blink; new friends, sights and wonderful tastes blend into an unforgettable image in my mind. Just one final stop to make before relieving poor Zorro of his burden, my sandals may make one more day I guess, fantastic as they’ve been I can MIX March 2013

Memoirs of an Old Diver

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED MARCH 2006 It is the year 2006 (Well, 2013 now!) and you are sitting at the hotel bar looking forward to a dinner in a fine Restaurant, followed by a night in the Pacha Disco or another hot address in Sharm. That could be the evening of any modern tourist in Sharm, but 35 years ago that was a complete different story. The Israelis were occupying the Sinai, and had built some houses in the city they called Ofira at the Sharm El Sheikh (Sharm being the name for a big open bay in Arabic). They had just opened the first hotel in Naama Bay, the Helnan Marina. The only tourists coming there were few lucky members of the then small group of sport divers. They could find only three points to rent a tank south of Eilat: in Nuweiba, Dahab and Sharm El Sheikh. In the Red Sea Divers Guide of that year, 1975, none of the now famous dive spots up and down Naama were listed, just dives in Nabq and in Ras Mohamed. The dive description for the Shark Reef started with a swim of 2 km in ‘’shark-invested waters’ (!) to reach the dive site…. That were the times, when my father came here for his 42

first Sinai holiday 1974, followed by many more until today. Here is the story in his own words: “I started diving in the early seventies and was hooked immediately. So when I heard in 1974 of the wonders of the coral reefs in the Sinai, I booked a flight to Tel Aviv immediately. From there I got a bus to Eilat with its diving centers. But I wanted to see the whole coast. So I asked around for a way to go south and found an old VW pick up bus for rent. With this bus I had no problem to find dive buddies, as few backpackers were already around, keen on getting a ride south. With Swedish, Swiss and Israeli divers in the car, we went slowly south until Ofira/Sharm El Sheikh, where the first little comfort could be found.” “We used the “Red Sea Diving Guide“ by Sholmo Cohen to find dive spots, rented tanks wherever possible and slept in, next or under the VW truck.) One year later I went again, this time with my non-diving wife and the same rented bus. Thanks to her I could make drift dives, she ditched me at wherever looked like a nice dive, and drove with the bus to the expected exit point, where she waited for me. You MIX March 2013

can say that she was not afraid of being all alone in wide spaces…. Sometimes I found the car when I came up, but not my wife: While I was under water, some Bedouins passed by, and invited her to their tent for some tea and (slightly suspicious) cigarettes, both of which she always enjoyed!” “In the years to come, she often waited for me on lonely beaches, and we got stuck together in soft sand, while looking for a new dive spot, or slept in or under our various rented cars. Once she spent a whole day in the cafeteria of the Marina Sharm Hotel (Now Helnan), at that time just a very basic bar with a very basic service, while we were searching for the wreck of the Dunraven.”

Just one more tea break and the guys put the new engine to the boat, and only a few more teas later we went out. Meanwhile it had become a dawn dive, but we were nevertheless exited by this old wreck with its huge glassfish school at the broken bow. I still don’t know, whether we were the first ones to dive on the Dunraven, but we surely felt like real explorers!” “My wife and her friend were not too happy, when we came back late in the evening, but then she was used to it. Chaotic dive planning was quite normal at this time, without modern Divermasters and their briefings.” In the eighties our Sinai dive holidays became more luxurious, when the Hilton opened its Fayrouz hotel in Naama Bay, and we could fly in via Cairo instead of Israel. And now, in 2006, we hardly can believe that we are still at the same piece of the world, quite understandable, when you look at the pictures, isn’t it?”

“That was in 1975. I had found another diver as buddy, and we had met a group of Austrian divers in Ras Mohamed. My buddy Naama Bay, seen from the beach of the Red Sea Diving complained about the place to be Center (now Iberotel Lido), 1975 too crowded, and that we should try to get off “the beaten track”. We had heard that some Bedouins know a wreck in the Gulf of Suez, and we decided to get there. We met them, they agreed to take us, some money changed owners, and off we went to the Keys the next morning, leaving my wife and the spouse of my dive buddy at the beach bar of the (Helnan) Marina, just for “2 hours”. But when we arrived in Ras Mohamed, we first got a cup of tea, and then bad news: the engine of the small motorboat was broken. “Mafish mushkela”, they had a spare engine in their camp in Naama. After some tea drinking, we all went there with our car, and, after a second tea MIX March 2013
