Help us promote tourism in Sharm and take a ‘selfie’ in your favourite place; restaurant, bar, beach, dive site, boat, sunset etc. and we will publish on our fan page, to enter the contest from 1/05/2014 – 30/06/2014..please send your photos to sales@mix-mag.com The winning Sharm Selfie will be MIX July’s front cover and the best of the rest will be featured in the magazine. Please send the photo in high resolution for print with your name and place it was taken.

schemeRed Sea Diving College Team re-established their ‘Adopt a pot’ scheme when a young British diver donated an amphora to the house reef. The project was started to encourage customers to donate a terracotta pot to the artificial reef being built on the house reef. The project also encourages environmental marine awareness and is important to prevent erosion of fragile ecosystems. April Collins saved up her pocket money to buy a large amphora with a special plaque to commemorate her ‘Giving Back’ donation. In honour of the event and her gift, her Instructor Aleksandra Ivanovic helped her along with surface support to place the large amphora on the seabed, which was documented by a photo story ‘potty about pots’ on the redseacollege pinterest account.

Royal Regalia In Sharm by Moira Tune

O

n November 5th 1922 in the Valley of the Kings, the renowned archeologist Howard Carter made the discovery of 12 steps leading to an unknown tomb, believed to be of significant importance. Weeks and months of careful excavation followed under the excited eyes of the world press, until February 17th 1923 when his team arrived at a sealed door past the tomb’s antechamber. “After about ten minutes’ work, I had made a hole large enough to enable me to do so, I inserted an electric torch.

10

An astonishing sight its light revealed, for there, within a yard of the doorway, stretching as far as one could see and blocking the entrance to the chamber, stood what to all appearances was a solid wall of gold. . . . It was, beyond any question, the sepulchral chamber in which we stood, for there, towering above us, was one of the great gilt shrines beneath which kings were laid.” – Howard Carter. What was revealed in the following days still astounds the world – it was the tomb of Tutankhamun. “We rolled back those covering shrouds, MIX May 2014

a golden effigy of the young boy king, of most magnificent workmanship, filled the whole of the interior of the sarcophagus. – Howard Carter 92 years have passed since the discovery, yet we are still mesmerized by this ancient king and the immense riches found. People flock to see his burial mask in the Cairo Museum, and also his tomb in the Valley of the Kings; however both of these locations are far away, making it a difficult decision for Sharm el Sheikh Tourists to chose to visit. Genena City the new and largest shopping mall built on the southern headland of Naama Bay has changed that by opening the King Tut Museum, which houses 135 identical replicas of the original pieces. I was invited to museum by Genena management; at first I was a little unsure of what to expect, but what I discovered was very impressive; it was my modern day equivalent of entering the tomb with all its riches. Genena City has not spared any expenses in creating this homage to King Tut; they have taken great pride in creating an exquisite exhibition with fine attention to the tiniest of details. To ensure that the replicas were as authentic as possible the exhibits were created in co-operation with the 11

ACTIVITIES Ministry of Antiquities. They have been painstakingly fashioned by a group of artists under the direction of the renowned artist Amr el Khamesy. The entrance of the museum is grand and builds anticipation of what lies beyond. It is a huge intricately decorated double door inlaid with gold and turquoise with snake

The centre piece of the museum is the replicas of the sarcophagus – it was explained to me how each one was discovered inside the next; the sarcophagi get more and more elaborate, the closer they were to the embalmed mummy . Real gold leaf and gem stones have been used in the replicas and with the dark

head handles. The museum is on one level covering 1200 square metres. As you enter you feel the chill of the air-conditioning which is fitting for serene ambiance the exhibits generates. The area has a dark grey slate floor, black walls with lit glass exhibition cases, columns decorated with lotus flowers and an imperial blue ceiling. The first area is dedicated to Howard Carter; showing copies of his drawings of the tomb layout, photographs of the excavation and copies of the newspaper reports on the discovery.

backdrop of the hall and the spotlights they gleam in all their glory. On the surrounding walls there are many exhibits, all with informative descriptions in English, Italian and Russian. The attention to detail is amazing; even a pair of Tutankhamun’s leather sandals depicting Egypt’s enemies look like they have been dug from the tomb. They look worn, ancient and dusty – not like they have been made just mere months ago. The tickets for the museum will include a Tour guide and will be available in Arabic, English, Russian and Italian. There will

also be headsets with recordings in various languages. Genena City plan to make a similar museum exhibiting Queen Nefertiti’s artifacts and also Akhenaten, first known as Amenhotep. If you get carried away by the history of ancient Egypt and want to discover more about Egyptology, there is also a well stocked AUC book store specialising in the subject. It seems the discovery of the ancient Kings and Queens of Egypt will captivate us for many years to come.

DINING

Al Dente Al Fresco style

By Moira Tune

There is always something quite romantic about dining by the beach with the sound of the waves gently swishing over the sand; if you add this to Italian cuisine then you have the perfect combo for duo dining. We were invited to dine at Novotel’s beach restaurant Al Dente. As a long term resident, I have to admit I tend to forget about this end of Naama Bay, but I have now been pleasantly reminded that it offers a tranquil oasis, away from the busier side of the Bay. We were greeted 18

at the restaurant entrance and shown the seafood specials on the blackboard before being escorted to our outdoor table – closest to the beach and in ear shot of the gentle waves. The tables are decked out in red and white gingham table clothes, nicely spaced, with soft lantern lighting. The whole restaurant is basically on the beach (set on a marble mosaic floor); there are some tables under the pagoda canopy, but when dining ‘al fresco’ you might as well be completely under the stars. The kitchen is also on MIX May 2014

the beach, under a wooden canopy and is open for viewing; all the Chefs preparing the food are smartly dressed in professional Chef Whites. We were presented with the menu, wine list and fresh ciabatta style rolls with butter, and allowed to take our time to look over the menu. The menu is very impressive with a stylish and creative range of pizzas, appetizers, pastas and main dishes. It was very nice to see an Italian menu with a twist, offering dishes with different ingredients, such as the ‘Smoked Salmon Salad served with Goat Cheese and Marinated Avocado.’ We decided to choose appetizers and mains, but there are also 10 types of pizza and some delicious pasta including ‘Homemade Fettuccini con Gamberitti’ and ‘Ravioli de la Casa’ ravioli stuffed with spinach and ricotta served with walnuts and fresh water cress. For our appetizers we chose ‘Beef Carpaccio’ and ‘Sautéed Calamari’. Both dishes were nicely presented on oversized white chinaware, were good sized

MIX May 2014

portions and very fresh and tasty. For the main dishes we chose the ‘Salmon Fillet with Black Olive Puree served on a bed of Spinach with Potatoes in a butter sauce’, and the ‘Veal Escalope with Sautéed Vegetables and Lemon Sauce.’ Once again both dishes were nicely presented. The black olive puree and spinach went particularly well with the perfectly cooked salmon – the combination of flavours was well balanced and delicious. My partner was also very happy with his veal, saying it was very tender and tasty. The waiter service was very good; all of our dishes were served promptly but not too quickly, our wine glasses were topped up when necessary and a waiter was always near at hand but not hovering. Al Dente offers a relaxed, casual ambiance with a touch of romanticism and makes an ideal choice to get away from the buzz. Al Dente is open in the evening from 7pm and reservations can be made through the Novotel reception.

Presented by Amgad El Nemr – Executive Chef of Marriott Sharm El Sheikh has worked as a Chef for 26 years, although he says the real start was with the Marriott in Zamalek in 1989. Since then he has had a worldwide whirlwind ride through many countries starting as a 2nd Commis Chef to now currently working as the Executive Chef. He worked many years in Saudi Arabia, which is what he describes as ‘a mission’ as it was the period he focused on gaining as much experience as possible. DJ Gogo Little Buddha’s Resident

by Moira Tune

MIX May 2014

NIGHT LIFE Little Buddha Sharm opened its doors in 2005 since then it has remained one of the most sophisticated venues on the Naama Bay circuit; offering a fusion of entertainment from the most modern of Asian and French cuisine to classy cocktails effortlessly shaken and stirred by the professional bar team and of course the smooth tunes mixed by the resident Djs. Mix decided to find out what makes DJ Gogo one of the Little Buddha residents tick and popped down to the venue to have a chat. Where, how and when? As with most interviews to kick the conversation off we usually start from where are you from, how did you start in the music industry and when did you arrive in Sharm. ‘It seems a good starting point, yes I grew up in Cairo and really started getting into music at the age of 15. My main genres was Old Skool and Blues which I still love today.’ ‘I was very lucky as I made friends with a group of Romanians in Cairo and they taught me how to DJ on vinyl – after that I started to experiment with different mixing techniques and was definitely hooked on the idea of becoming a DJ.’ ‘I came to Sharm in 2004 – I was attracted by the tourism or more precisely the fact that Sharm had mainly international visitors which meant to me different minds. The Cairo scene was new and mainly commercial house; I wanted the opportunity to experiment with progressive house and knew that Sharm had the right audience for me.’ ‘Sharm’s multinational tourism meant people who had come from a more evolved house music scene and who loved more developed genres.’ When did you play your first gig and what clubs have you played in before Little Buddha? ‘I played my first gig in Cairo at the age 28

of 17. The ‘house scene’ had just started to take off and clubs were eager to book DJs. I played in more than 20 clubs; ‘35’, ‘Singraya’, ‘Absolute’, ‘TGI Fridays’ to name just a few.’ ‘In Sharm I opened Pangea in Soho Square and played regularly in Savoy’s Caligula club before joining Little Buddha in 2012.’ ‘When I left Cairo I knew my main aim was to become the resident DJ in Little Buddha – it was a small and nice journey to get to my goal and now I am very happy to play where I always wanted to.’ Since Cairo how have you developed your style and how did you adapt to the Sharm scene? ‘I started to experiment with pure progressive, progressive and electric house with a little bit of tech house. With an international crowd you need to learn to read the people and keep the mood up and going. The Russian crowd love progressive and tech, the Brit crowd prefer Old Skool.’ MIX May 2014

You said playing in Little Buddha was your dream, what is it like and how do you feel about the venue? ‘I love Little Buddha, the staff are fantastic and it really feels like home, they are my Sharm family and Little Buddha is my home. I am often here even when I am not working as I just feel so comfortable.’ ‘When I am playing, my favourite time is between 1am – 4am as the crowd are really happy and up with me.’ When you are not in Little Buddha how do you spend your time and how do you relax? ‘DJing is my life and makes me feel so happy, so it is no surprise that I spend my spare time downloading different music to get new tracks – I find it really relaxing.’ ‘I also still have my love of Blues music, I have never played it as a DJ, but love it and often relax by listening to Blues.’ And finally do you like Sushi and what is your favourite? ‘I love Sushi and definitely work in the right place for that. The Sushi Chefs are amazing with their creations and it is always so fresh and tasty. My all-time favourite roll is the Philadelphia roll.’ DJ Gogo plays at Little Buddha three to four nights a week starting from 11.30pm.
