SHARM EL SHEIKH HOTEL PRICES HIGHEST RISER GLOBALLY According to the latest Hotels.com© Hotel Price Index™ (HPI®), a biannual report based on actual prices paid in 2012 compared with 2011, UK travellers faced price hikes in over half of the international destinations in 2012, despite a strong Pound Sterling. Of the 116 cities included in the report, prices were up in 63, flat in six and down in 47. Hotel rates overseas now look set to rise higher in 2013 as the Pound is weakened by the strengthening Euro and US Dollar, and the downgrading of the country’s AAA credit rating by ratings agency Moody’s. However, UK travellers found money went further in many major European cities in 2012, as the Euro Crisis caused prices to fall. Athens suffered the biggest drop, with prices paid down by 10% to £72, with visitors put off by protests across Greece. Italy, which entered its fourth recession since 2001 last year, saw

hotel rates in the capital of Rome fall by 9% to an average of £106 per night. With the Spanish economy shrinking by 1.4% in 2012, prices in Madrid fell by 8%, with UK travellers spending an average of £82 per night to stay in Spain’s capital city. The Netherlands also saw prices fall, with prices in the capital city of Amsterdam dropping by 8% to £106, as the country entered its third recession since 2009. Hotel prices in London also dropped for domestic travellers, despite the summer of celebrations. With many Brits choosing to watch the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and Games at home and international visitors staying away due to concerns over inflated hotel prices and transport problems, UK travellers paid 7% less to stay in the capital in 2012 at an average £110 per night. The USA was one of the big winners in the 2012 HPI, with UK travellers paying more in all 15 US destinations included in the report. The west coast saw some of the biggest rises, with prices in San Francisco growing by 20% to an average of £136. Seattle and Los Angeles both reached £125 following respective increases of 14% and 13%. Elsewhere, big rises were seen in Orlando, where prices gained 18% to £73, and New Orleans where the average price per night rose to £106, up by 16% on 2011. Looking across the globe, 2012’s biggest riser was Sharm el-Sheikh, where prices were up by 34% to £92 as travellers’ confidence in the Middle East returned following the Arab Spring turmoil in 2011. Dubai was another big winner in 2012, with prices rising by 14% to £137, driven by high occupancy rates in the region’s most popular destination. However, the picture in Egypt’s capital was less than rosy though with the average price paid falling by 7% to £98 per night.

EGYPTAIR EXPRESS LAUNCHES NEW FLIGHT ROUTES BETWEEN SHARM AL- SHEIKH AND RIYADH Egypt Air is set to launch two new flight routes beginning 17 April through its Express subsidiary, both leaving from Sharm Al-Sheikh. The first route will head to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia while the second is planned to go to Kuwait City. Halmi Rizq, Chairman of Egypt Air Express, stated that new flights headed from Sharm Al-Sheikh to Riyadh would leave Tuesdays and Fridays, with those going to Kuwait City leaving Saturdays and Thursdays, weekly. He added that the company sought to expand its regional network and increase the frequency of flights going to coastal cities in order to increase tourism.

During the peak of Egypt’s tourist season, the company has been known to host up to 14 flights a day, going into Cairo, Hurghada and Sharm Al-Sheikh. The company seeks to expand the number of services offered to its clients, by facilitating direct flights between a number of Egypt’s tourist cities and Arab and European capitals throughout the region. It is hoped that these measures will help to increase the amount of tourist traffic going both in and out of the country. He added that the company is expecting to host a total of 85 flights per week during the summer 2013 season, set to start 31 March, representing a 7% increase compared to summer 2012, which saw an average of 64 flights per week to 10 different locations within Egypt. Egypt Air Express’s airline fleet currently consists of 12 Embraer and 170 commercial jets.

ITALIAN ALPITOUR DOUBLES EGYPT INVESTMENTS Italian tourism operator Alpitour SpA is doubling its investments in Egypt in spite of the country's political turmoil, company officials made known on Tuesday. Already present in the country of the pharaohs with its Alpitour, Francorosso, Villaggi Bravo, and Karambola brands, the group is opening new resorts in Sharm El Sheikh, Hurgada, Marsa Matruh, and Mars Alam, as well as adding a new cruise along the Nile river. ''These are market-driven choices, i.e., demanded by travel agencies and clients,'' Alpitour brand manager Giancarlo Macchia explained to ANSAmed. The decision to stay in Egypt was taken a year and a half from the January 25, 2011, revolution that ousted former strongman Hosni Mubarak, Macchia said. Along with Tunisia, the Egyptian market makes up 35% of Alpitour's turnover, so disinvestment on grounds of political instability is not an option. ''Egypt is too important,'' Macchia remarked. ''Competitive prices and local beauty make the country a must destination, where you can work 360 days a year''. It's a two-way street, for Egypt cannot do without the Italian market either, and authorities are aware the country cannot afford to lose its tourist industry. ''Since the revolution, every single one of our interlocutors at the tourism ministry has made it very clear that the sector is essential to the country's economy,'' Macchia said. Of course, the company is closely monitoring the evolution of fundamentalist tendencies that might eventually shut the country down to Western tourism, Macchia added.

EGYPT TO PROBE ILLEGAL SHARK HUNTING Egypt's tourism minister says he's ordered an investigation into shark hunting in Red Sea protected waters following a complaint from a conservation group. Hisham Zazou says a conservation organization in the Red Sea city of Hurghada complained of a tourism agent in the city allegedly advertising shark fishing activities on coral reefs and in nature reserves, which is illegal, Ahram Online reported Friday.

''The reality is that the Red Sea and the Mediterranean coast are still untouched by the turmoil,'' he said. ''We will back to pre-revolution levels soon.'' In the past four months, the only program change involved an excursion to Luxor, where the next annual conference of the Italian Federation of Travel and Tourism Operators (FIAVET) is being held in April. ''With these new investments, we are betting on an Italian product with quality services. For example, we doubled our investments in our Bravo villages in Sharm El Sheikh and Marsa Alam, making them 100% Italian'', Macchia explained. Meanwhile, related companies are also keeping a foot firmly on Egyptian sand. EasyJet, for example, is adding three weekly flights from Milan to Sharm El Sheikh this summer. and endangered whale shark," a release from the organization said. "Whale sharks are one of the most beautiful and timid of the shark species, which feed on plankton and pose no danger to humans whatsoever. They are internationally classified as an endangered species and hunting them is a violation of environmental law."

The Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association said they also had reports of illegal shark hunting in the Suez Governorate. "HEPCA and the Red Sea community are outraged at the disturbing news coming out of the Suez Governorate; the recurring slaughter of the gentle

Hard Rock Cruiser

Mix Magazine caught up with Bernd Pulaski and his girlfriend Vicky Kind at Hard Rock Naama Bay as they were celebrating their latest achievement … 100th Hard Rock Cafés visit across the world! Extraordinary right? Bernd has been travelling far and wide on his mission to visit every Hard Rock Café there is. The 48 year old German Plumber started his quest in 1991 during a visit to his sister in USA. They went to Hard Rock for dinner and from the moment he stepped foot inside he was hooked, he told us that ‘it was like a home from home’. Along with his other interests of Judo, Wrestling and American Football, Hard Rock has become one of his passions and hobbies or in his words ‘it’s an addiction’. We were interested in how he plans his vacations, he told us, ‘I choose my next destination based only on where there is a Hard Rock, then when I arrive there, I will check out the place to see what else I can do’.

By Chantelle Wilson

Media they were assured that Sharm El Sheikh is a perfectly safe place. Bernd mentioned that they do have other plans to visit the touristic sites such as snorkeling in Tiran Island and they had already travelled to Petra by bus. After we asked him what the main point behind all of this travelling was, He explained that from when he started up until now is that his main interests is not only to see the world but to buy, swap and exchange Hard Rock pins with other Hard Rock members, this helps him meet new people with same interests as him and keeps him actively focused on planning his next trip. His next visit planned is Hard Rock Japan, this like many of the other Hard Rock Cafés, is not his first visit. Once Bernd and Vicky have completed their mission of visiting all the Cafés he will then be happy and content to retire, he said ‘who knows, maybe we will set a new challenge to complete’.

Mix was intrigued to know why Sharm for the 100th visit? And would he not of thought to come here for diving or for historical interests? Vicky explained that they have never been to Egypt before and a friend had recommended them here, they were told the weather is perfect all year round and although Egypt is under watch from all the News and

Even though Hard Rock Naama Bay would be his most memorable being the 100th Hard Rock he had visited, his favorite Hard Rock to date is Hawaii. But who wouldn’t love Hawaii? They told us that they will definitely return to Sharm El Sheikh and of course back to Hard Rock Naama Bay because after his Limo ride to the Café and his applauded entrance he felt ‘like a Rockstar’. He had no comments for improvement as the food, staff, service and atmosphere was ‘Awesome!’

DINING

This great chilli has to be one of the best dishes to serve to friends for a casual get-together or for a warming family meal. All ingredients can be found at your local 24/7 supermarket. Cooking time 50 mins - 1 hour Serves 4 Ingredients 1 tbsp oil 1 large onion 1 red pepper 2 garlic cloves , peeled 1 heaped tsp hot chilli powder (or 1 level tbsp if you only have mild) 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp ground cumin 500g lean minced beef 1 beef stock cube 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp tomato purée 410g can red kidney beans Preparation method 1. Prepare your vegetables. Chop your onion into small dice, about 5mm square. Cut your pepper in half lengthways, remove stalk and wash the seeds away, then chop. 2. Put your pan on the hob over a medium heat. Add the oil and leave it for 1-2 minutes until hot. Add the onions and cook, stirring fairly frequently, for about 5 minutes. Tip in the garlic, red pepper, chilli, paprika and cumin. Give it a good stir, then leave it to cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. Turn the heat up a bit, add the meat to the pan and break it up with your spoon or spatula. Keep stirring and prodding for at least 5 minutes. Make sure you keep the heat hot enough for the meat to fry and become brown, rather than just stew. 4. Crumble your stock cube into 300ml/1⁄2 pint of hot water. Pour this into the pan with the mince mixture. Open the can of chopped tomatoes and add. Add a good shake of salt and pepper. Squirt in about 2 tbsp of tomato purée and stir the sauce well. 5. Simmer it gently. Bring the whole thing to the boil, give it a good stir and put a lid on the pan. Turn down the heat until it is gently bubbling and leave it for 20 minutes. You should check on the pan occasionally to stir it and make sure the sauce doesn’t catch on the bottom of the pan or isn’t drying out. If it is, add a couple of tablespoons of water and make sure that the heat really is low enough. After simmering gently, the saucy mince mixture should look thick, moist and juicy. 6. Drain and rinse the beans in a sieve and stir them into the chilli pot. Bring to the boil again and gently bubble without the lid for another 10 minutes, adding a little more water if it looks too dry. Taste a bit of the chilli and season. Now replace the lid, turn off the heat and leave your chilli to stand for 10 minutes before serving and relax. Leaving your chilli to stand is really important as it allows the flavours to mingle with the meat. Serving Suggestions Pile the chilli mixture onto a bed of plain, boiled rice, with a spoonful of soured cream on top. Or eat with tortilla chips and a sprinkle of grated cheddar. Alternatively wrap it up in a tortilla with shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes and guacamole for a great burrito. Yummy!!

Garden of Paradise The Kona Kai Restaurant By Hedvig Jeney How about dinner? Hmmm‌ Today I want something different. Something special. Something extraordinary. I have chosen to have sushi, but maybe in another way. When decided, I knew exactly where I can find it. In Marriott Red Sea Resort in Naama Bay, the Kona Kai Sushi Bar and Restaurant. Why? Because they not only offer excellent quality and variety of sushi, but also Teppanyaki and Polynesian dishes, which is a very curious and delicious combination.

On arrival I was marveled by the beautiful indoor landscaping, where the restaurant is situated. A little creek

By the Teppanyaki bar one has a great chance to learn to know other people, sometimes even business meetings are conducted and contracts are signed during a dinner in this laid back atmosphere with great show and food. But you can have the variety of sushi, Teppanyaki or Polynesian at any table in the restaurant, if you wish. We have settled for the Tepanyaki Bar, because I know the show is worthy and the food is super delicious. While waiting, we had a Saketini, a cocktail made of sake – Japanese rice wine – and Premium Vodka, then the Chef’s choice of sushi has arrived, which alone is an experience. Sushi is known about the raw fish and the carefully selected ingredients. Some say a piece of sushi is a culinary orgasm, while in one bite you tickle all the senses of taste in your mouth, salty, sweet, sour and bitter, in a perfectly composed balance. Adding the spicy taste of wasabi (Japanese horse radish paste) and the soya sauce this experience is increased to the max. What a delight. We have met the Executive Chef Mr. Amgad El Nemr, who explained, that the fish sorts arrive to the restaurant fresh from all over the world. Toro, the fatty tuna from Japan, smoked eel from Thailand and lobster from Oman, the other fish sorts from Alexandria, Egypt. All are sustainable fishes, which means self reproducing resources, consuming them is not effecting the global ecosystem. The rice is traditional Japanese round grain rice, steamed and added rice vinegar. All enveloped in a crispy alga leaf or inside out (rice outside), maybe cone shaped or covered with Tobico, the tiny eggs of flying fish. The variety of sushi is endless. In the meantime the Teppanyaki Chef has prepared the large iron griddle in front of us and when he started to prepare our food, the show began. Knives flying, sauces pouring, sizzling meat and fish, smell of garlic and grilled vegetables, roasted meat and spices has filled all our senses. All of a sudden big flames embraced the finely chopped ingredients and at the end the perfect fried garlic rice with vegetables, ginger beef filet and chicken in sweet sauce was steaming in our plates. decided to create a little corner of Heaven on Earth. He set on a journey to find the perfect place for this tiny garden of Paradise. Traveled through splendid mountains and misty rainforests, he found peace, silence and lush life, but he never stopped searching for the perfect place of joy and merriment. Until he finally arrived to a bay called Kona Kai, where the gentle waves of the ocean, brilliant flowers in the breeze and the soothing voices of a waterfall enchanted him and knew, he found the garden of tranquility and joy. When I looked around, I knew, Marriott with all the landscaping around has achieved to give me the feeling of this legend, I have arrived to that little paradise of the great god, Tiki. Kona Kai is a concept, that Marriott Hotels all over the world follow since 20 years, introducing South Pacific cuisine to all. Here, in Sharm, we find Sushi, Teppanyaki and Polynesian dishes all in one place. When you call to reserve your table, all you need to tell to the AYS (At Your Service) reservation service, which kind of food you wish to have, while the Teppanyaki Bar is limited seating, but offers a great show of sound, sight and fragrances.

Wide eyed watching the show, it was an amazing experience. The Australian beef was tender, spicy and melting in the mouth. The chefs on Teppanyaki bar are perfectly trained and experienced, and although we have received a Japanese kimono coat by sitting, the show is perfectly safe and extremely precise. It’s a tradition to have brilliant chef’s by this bar in Marriott. You can chose any menu in the restaurant to try all three kinds of cuisine let it be the Emperor’s choice or the Sea Supreme, maybe the Empress’ delight. The restaurant is open from 7 Pm till 11 Pm, and by the Teppanyaki Bar you can spend an hour to have your dinner, mingle with people and watch the show. There are 10 seats by each of the 3 T bars. Otherwise one can be seated at the sushi bar or tables for a longer dinner. The menus are constantly changed, to offer all variety to try for everyone, when you decide to dine frequently by them. Every Tuesday and Friday they also have “All you can eat” sushi nights. The restaurant has a second entrance from the seaside Promenade of Naama Bay, for an easy access. An S/T (Sushi/Teppanyaki) set menu, is the Chef’s Favorite Dinner, starting with a selection of sushi, followed by a Teppanyaki cooking show and finished with dessert, all costs LE 225 per person.

NOSTALGIA

SEVEN GOOD REASONS TO HIRE AN UNDERWATER PRIVATE GUIDE by Sarah Woodford

34

MIX April 2013

Originally Published in 2007 For a number of years Underwater Private Guides have had a poor image, with anyone requiring their services being considered ‘not good enough’ to dive with the rest of the group. Now, that view is changing and those in the know realize a Private Guide holds as much cachet as private tennis and ski lessons, or having a personal trainer! Here are seven good reasons for hiring an underwater private guide: 1. You’re a photographer – divers often groan if they get teamed up with you, and who can blame them! Nowadays, the advent of budget underwater cameras has made everyone a wannabe photographer but ten divers fighting over one fish certainly isn’t a pretty sight. If you are Billy-no-mates or want to avoid ‘cameras at dawn’, a private guide will feel like a breath of fresh air. They won’t ever get bored watching you take a hundred photos of a lesser spotted sea slug (honest!) and they certainly won’t be trying to compete! 2. You don’t like going deep – not everyone wants to go shark-hunting in the blue to 30 metres and if the idea makes you quake in your fins, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. The fact is that almost every reef in the Red Sea can be dived at less than 10 metres, and the prettiest and most colourful corals are to be found at shallow depths. A private guide will respect any request and give you a nice, relaxing, gentle, shallow dive. 3. You’re not as young as you feel – the nice thing about diving is that it is open to most age groups. I know a couple in their seventies who always book a private guide. They’re both superb divers, but appreciate a helping hand for simple tasks such as putting on dive boots and climbing back into the boat. Above all, they like the idea of not ‘feeling rushed’, as they always jump in before or after the other divers, when the dive deck is less busy. 4. You would like to improve your diving technique – your private guide can also be your personal trainer, or a kind of underwater Trinny & Susanna; offering tips and hints to improve your

MIX April 2013

dive skills and adjust your weighting. It’s easy to improve without the pressure of rushing to keep up with a group. You could even be bold and complete the Peak Performance Buoyancy Course. Divers are often quoted as saying it’s the best thing that ever happened to them and it could change your life too (underwater at least!) 5. You want to escape the crowds – it’s a known fact that bubbles, together with the vibration caused by divers swimming will disturb fish, but most divers don’t realize how much more the fish are disturbed by a large group of divers. Two or three divers will generally get to see far more on a dive, especially if they jump in earlier, later or go in a different direction from the herd. 6. You are fed up with getting the ‘Buddy from Hell’ – you are a single diver and over the last few trips have been paired with Captain Chaos (I think my weight-belt’s fallen off), Billy the club diver (to make sure we don’t get separated, we can use my buddy line), and The Photographer (groan). You are checking in and soon realize this year will be no different…….the only other single diver is Mr Chav (I’ve bought the most expensive kit, because it’s the best, right?!) Run back to that counter and book yourself a private guide; it will be the best decision you’ve ever made! 7. You want to go to places you’re not supposed to! – Many Dive Centres recommend that Open Water Divers do not dive in Ras Mohamed, Tiran, Dunraven and Thistlegorm; and rightly so. The currents and sea conditions could be quite daunting to a newly qualified diver and it’s not safe to expect a dive guide taking a group to thirty metres to look after you at eighteen. If you don’t have time to take the advanced course and are a fairly capable diver, you might be able to book a private guiding service to these destinations, giving you a chance to see some of the best corals and sea life in the area.

NOSTALGIA

THE BIGGEST SHOW IN THE WORLD Star Gazing in the desert By Mark Fraenkel I remember as a kid once asking my dad why there were no stars in the London sky. Well take this trip to the desert and you will see why. With little or no light pollution to hide the light of the stars this desert stargazing trip will fascinate many. The evening starts with a moonlit drive through the mountains into the desert where nestled away around 40 kilometres behind Sharm lies a cluster of tents with only the faint glow of candles lighting them. We are directed to one of the Bedouin tents where we are served sweet tea and shisha pipes while watching the local Bedouins making bread on the fire. This bread is then used as an accompaniment to the hot dinner that is served before Nader Kobaissy, the owner of the company, comes and introduces himself. He is a well spoken man who entertains the audience with his own quirky style. Heckling is welcome and all questions are answered. He makes various interesting observations before we move over to the telescopes. The Islamic year is based on the Moon and is 355 days long. The Christian calendar is based on the Sun and is 365.25 days (plus the Leap year day). This approximately 11 day difference means that Ramadan shifts 11 days earlier each year. The Fifth pillar of Islam is the Haj. This took place on 8 January this year. Very unusually, the next will be on 30 December this year, which will mean 2 pilgrimages to Mecca in one year. He invites us over to the 10 inch computer guided telescopes where he explains the science behind what we are seeing. If sound takes time to travel then so does light, but it travels much more quickly. We all know that we see lightening before we hear thunder. Therefore a view into the sky is a view into the past. Reflected sunlight from the moons surface

36

takes about 1.3 seconds to reach earth. It takes 8.3 minutes for light to travel from the sun to the earth. The nearest known star, other than the Sun (Proxima Centauri), is 4.22 light years away. Hubble telescope in deep space can look back 11 billion years! The universe is estimated to be 15 billion years old! We learn which is the polar star, and the location and description of the planets we will look at through the telescopes, the Moon, Saturn and Jupiter. The light pollution in the desert is minimal, giving the best conditions for the trip and the atmosphere is tranquil and slightly eerie. Nader used to take tourists on desert trips. He met a German who sold telescopes and they were the first to put the two together. They came up with the idea 9 years ago while camping out in a Bedouin settlement. The business started with a 6 inch telescope and one client a week, and has been built up into the Sharm el Sheik Gold Award winning excursion for Thompson’s in 2004/5. The reason for the success is clear; the view given by the current computer steered telescopes is breathtaking. You can see the bands of Jupiter and four of its moons and the rings of Saturn. Most spectacular however was that view of our nearest neighbour, our moon. Through these telescopes the moon becomes much more than a disc in the sky. We see clearly the craters that impact asteroids have made over billions of years. It is only our atmosphere that protects Earth from a similar fate by burning up most asteroids before they reach our planet. Nader tells us that every day they assess at 1.30 pm whether cloud cover means they have to cancel. It will not surprise you to hear that this is uncommon. HIKING IN ST.KATHERINE Beyond The Standard Excursion By Dorothea Reinecke

Two groups of Sharmers hit the road to discover those parts of the St Katherine Protectorate that remain almost completely unknown to most people.

LIVING

Bedouin garden owner Although many have climbed Mt Sinai, they usually do it the dark, suffer exposure and see nothing. If they have visited the monastery, it’s only to check out the Burning Bush and see the relics of St Katherine before hopping back onto the bus to Sharm. In their rush to tick off the monastery and mountain before as a ‘must see’, these people are missing out on one of the most spectacular landscapes in South Sinai. The mountain peaks thrust up like the Land of Mordor, dark and formidable, while between them nestle beautiful wadis with gardens of olives, apricots, almonds and pomegranates. After rainfall, water runs down the mountains and through the wadis, collecting in rock pools and behind dams. This is an ancient landscape where you still find hermit cells hidden behind boulders and Byzantine ruins turned into goat sheds and Bedouin shelters. All these areas are only accessible by foot with camels to carry food, tents and bedding. Intent on breaking into this little known landscape, twenty Sharmers, aged between 8 and 70, left Sharm in the early morning to spend a day exploring Wadi Itlah, a stunning wadi behind the village of St Katherine. Access was down a gully called wadi Bugeya with boulders, creaks and narrow defiles. The kids scrambled like goats while the tough old dive guides and Sharm’s best known pub owner slid and stumbled to the bottom, where they found the stunning wadi Itlah, with palm trees, streams in the sand and shade under a huge old carob tree. By midday, the intrepid group had reached a Bedouin

38

garden where an amazing lunch was prepared with black olives, bread fresh from the fire, melted goat’s butter and more amazing food. Once refreshed, the group continued up the wadi, past more gardens and boulder zones as the precipitous rock walls of the High Mountains closed in until tall palm trees behind some water pools indicated the entry into Wadi Talah which opened out into one of the largest gardens of the mountains, cultivated by the monastery. The group had a choice now, of either following the easy path out of Wadi Itlah, or make a longer detour through Wadi Talah. And as the wadi floor in Talah was now full of gurgling streams from the winter rains, the group decided for the longer and beautiful way. The way back to the village from Thala is a narrow and steep path zigzagging up over a ridge, which put some strain on leg muscles… But the fantastic views in the evening light helped to compensate for tired muscles and aching joints until reaching the ridge at 1700 m, from where the stone houses and courtyards of the town of St Katherine can be seen, and a quick descent let to the comfort of the Sheik Musa Guest house. There Monty, the owner of Sharm’s T2 Pub, still had the power to drag out a jumbo sized cool box full of his tavern’s frothing ale which he generously donated to his thirsty mates. The next morning, after a hearty breakfast in a Bedouin tent, everyone was expecting nothing more challenging than a visit to a crafts centre run by an old Greek monk, Father Musi, and then discovered that the old buzzard lived in a garden hermitage half

way up a mountain besides the monastery. It was nothing like Wadi Talah but it was a good half hour walk up a steep path into an amazing terraced garden that seemed to overhang the monastery. Here the monk had built a shrine into the mountain and erected a wooden den hung with fine embroidered bags of Bedouin women. In the quiet of the garden, Gordon Wilkinson, told stories about Saint Katherine and then led the group down to the monastery and into the icon gallery for more stories of icons and manuscripts. Meanwhile, another group of Sharmers had arrived for an expedition into the very heart of the High Mountains. As the first group settled down for a well earned lunch at Sheikh Musa’s Guest house, the second loaded up a camel and headed off up Abu Giifa, “the father of all stenches”, a suitable expletive to describe the experience of climbing the zigzag path that is the only camel route into the High Mountains. But once over the ridge, a beautiful wadi opens up where the path became a stream, a spring became a waterfall, the gardens flaunted their blossoms and the leaves were as green as fresh lettuce. After setting up camp in one of the Bedouin gardens, the group climbed to the black granite summit of Gebel Abbas Pasha, higher than Mt Sinai, where the demented and ill son of Mohamed Aly had once planned to build a palace. From the rubble of his dream, the group was able to survey the whole of the High Mountain region. As the twilight faded and the shadows deepened the group made its way back to the camp where the guide had prepared dinner round a fire made from the wood of an old almond tree that had been uprooted by last month’s rains. The following day, the group frolicked in the

waterfalls, streams and rock pools of the High Mountains, even swimming in a mountain lake formed by a dam, though at 10 degrees, they may have been as demented as Abbas Pasha. “ I heard about this trip by chance and loved to join, as I have visited St Katherine only once 20 years ago. I was surprised to see that the little Bedouin village has become a town, with a beautiful and clean guest house.” Said Nadja (70 years) the oldest of the group, “The walk was quite difficult for me, but the Bedouin guide and the others helped me a lot. 20 years ago I only saw the village and the monastery, and I was very surprised now to see so much green in the desert and so much live in the mountain, I would never have expected that! I thought of Bedouin always as being desert dwellers, I never expected them to live in the mountains and built gardens. It is amazing what wonders that nature has in store for us. Of course I hope that even more people can get to know this nature and this way of life, but hopefully in a healthy measure. Materialism and greediness should not be allowed to destroy something so wonderful.” The youngest participants; Luna (12 years) & Noura (8 years) were equally impressed; “We loved the healthy and delicious food with the Bedouins with the cute baby and to see how the Bedouins actually live in such an area. And we could fill our water bottle with running water, we could not believe our eyes!” Both trips were organized by Wilderness Ventures Egypt (http://www.wilderness-ventures-egypt. com/) via the new Facebook group ‘Sharmers Discover Sinai’, which should give a platform to those Sharmers, who want to see more of Sinai than beach and sea.
