M

ost people in their lifetime can only imagine cruising in a private speed boat to a secluded turquoise lagoon, enjoying the day swimming amongst tropical fish and sunbathing on pristine white sand beaches – but here in Sharm el Sheikh it is possible within a reasonable holiday budget.

Alternatively it is possible to hire a boat privately through a dive centre or a water sports centre, with a driver and a guide.

Even if you don’t go completely private but join a trip you will still feel like a million dollars as most of the reputable companies offering such a service will limit the numbers on board. With this in mind make sure you ask how many people will be on the trip, what the passenger license is, are life jackets on board and if there is a professional guide, otherwise you might find yourself feeling more like a sardine rather than a V.I.P.

The ride over to the lagoon can also be a little bumpy so hang on tight and enjoy the breeze in your hair as you surf the waves.

Most of the speed boat trips head out to Tiran Island Lagoon, the waters here are relatively safe and free from strong currents, however it is always important to have a guide who will look out for your safety. Most dive centers cater for divers and snorkelers and have various trips running two to three times a day.

MIX December - January 2013

The boat should be equipped with towels, water and soft drinks and sometimes there is an option to have lunch supplied. Bear in mind that these boats usually do not have a covered area, so sun hats and sun screen are essential.

When you arrive you can swim in warm crystal clear waters, go for a wander on the sand bank at low tide, or sunbathe on the bow. You can also cruise past and wave at the many dive/snorkel day boats and go searching for wild dolphins which can at their own will surf the bow wave which is a meter away from you.

Marika’s

Italian Restaurant At The Sinai Grand Casino by Mostafa Farid

If you’ve ever been to Sharm El Sheikh then you couldn’t have missed Sharm’s Grand Casino. It is a massive temple like building on the road by Naama Bay. A piece from Las Vegas, the casino makes you curious to visit, especially if you are ready to spend some money trying out your luck. Inside seems relatively smaller than from the outside, however, there are all kinds of gambling games you might .need. Not only that, but there’s also a proper stage for night shows and events

MIX December - January 2013

In the far right corner where we were heading, there is a cozy in house restaurant called Marika. The restaurant is an Italian cuisine that is known for its handmade pasta and traditional Italian dishes. There is also a live band playing authentic Italian music. Marina the vocalist sings classic as well as contemporary Italian songs, that give the place .perky / upbeat kind of atmosphere We were seated next to the small dance floor by the band. The people that were there seemed to be mostly regular customers who knew the place well, other than the noticeable tourists. Waiting to be served, we were listening to the music and watching a senior couple as they danced the tango. The couple may have been old yet they were .very fit, with perfect steps and body movements

Marika, is a casual, light hearted and perky restaurant with live music, that makes homemade Italian food Marika is a privately owned restaurant, run by Marika herself. She walked up to our table and handed us the menus. Recently we’ve visited a number of Italian Restaurants, and so both of us some good experience on Italian food. But of course since we always like to try what the place specializes in, we asked Marika to suggest . a starter for us Taking her advice for an apetizer, we ordered a mixed platter of Italian pasteries, called “Sinai Appetizer”, to share. I always find those mixed platters to be a smart choice. You get to try a bite of pretty much all the starters in the menu, . and the portions are always good enough for two The mixed platter consisted of, Bruschetta, which is garlic bread with tomato sauce, some fried potatoes with mozzarella and tomatoes, parmesan with mozzarella and minced beef, savory pie, veal with tuna sauce , some mixed toasted bread, and finally beef and turkey cold cuts. Along with our assorted platter came a dip that is made from eggplants with mozzarella and tomatoes. The dip had a .sharp taste to it that went nicely with the garlic bread For our main dish, since the place is known for its handmade pasta, I ordered the lazagnia. My partner also wanted to go for something classically Italian, so she ordered a tuna

MIX December - January 2013

pizza. Just by the time we were done with our appetizers, our food was ready to be served. The lazagnia was very tasty, it didn’t quite have a structure, but was still rich, with plenty of minced beef and mozzarella cheese. My partner’s pizza was also good. It was quite big and could easily feed . two. Of course, thin crust is the real Italian pizza None of that fast food “Pizza Hut” kind of thing where the crust is a meal on its own. Real Italian pizza should be thin and a little bit crispy as well. The trick with sea food pizza or tuna pizza is for it to be fresh. Although I could tell my partner was enjoying her pizza very much and said that it had lots of cheese and fresh tuna in it, she still couldn’t .finish it of course If you are one of our regular readers you’ll know that I always try the tiramisu at any Italian restaurant we visit. I am always surprised how it is very different from one place to the other. And how a real Italian tiramisu should taste, is a controversial issue. Some will argue that it should be thick and creamy, while others will say it shouldn’t be too thick or too creamy. But that’s the thing with food, it’s a taste, and taste is a relative thing. Well, Marika’s tiramisu was quite thick, creamy, and very chocolaty with a strong .coffee aftertaste Marika, is a casual, light hearted and perky restaurant with live music, that makes homemade Italian food. Their prices are relatively low and portions are adequately sized. They also have weekday dinner promotions that you can make .good use of

Looking Like An…

EGYPTIAN QUEEN Skincare Ancient Egyptian Style by: Hedvig Jeney

Human

nature: place a mirror around any of us, you’ll see, sooner or later we all will take a peek or even a long look in it without even noticing. Our own images reflected in a shiny surface fascinated mankind since the earliest ages. A quick glance in the morning can show you, what the daily stress and the winter in South Sinai can cause to your skin and body. Why don’t you spend a Spa-day ancient Egyptian style and feel like a beautiful Queen?

Mastering the art of beauty and splendor, the ancient Egyptians took pride in their attractiveness and devoted much time in maintaining their appearance and they were known for magnificent beauty, exotic perfumes, beautiful clothes, intricate hairstyles. Today, in Sharm el Sheikh, you can find all the ingredients for to spend a day with the wisdom of the ancients. Walk down to the Old Market, pass by the pharmacies or supermarkets, these simple but very efficient products are right at your hand and available to everyone. Well, if you wish, come with me and let’s get started…

Take a bath as Cleopatra … The famous queen was known to bathe in milk and honey. Run yourself a nice warm bath and put in two cups of whole milk and a splash of honey to the water. The milk has lactic acid which helps to lightly exfoliate and nourish your skin – allowing it to hold its own hydration. The honey is a natural humectants, which moisturizes the skin. So you’re removing the rough layer of dead skin, hydrating, and nourishing the skin all in one relaxing bath. The ancient Egyptians also used soaps. They believed 40

that an unclean body with unpleasant odors was undesirable and impure. The soaps they used were not like the bars or body washes we use today. Many of these soaps were a paste of ash or clay, mixed with olive oil, sometimes scented. This resulted in a material that not only cleaned the body, but also soothed any skin disease or damage. You may want to treat your skin with a mineral clay wrap, you can find many products for this in the Pharmacies of Sharm, maybe choose one which contains the salts of the Dead Sea. The naturally found clays and minerals absorb into the skin, directly receiving it`s beneficial properties. MIX December - January 2013

Remove all that is unnecessary … Body hair was considered unsightly and its removal was of major importance to Egyptian women. To follow their ways in modern days, use the so called “Sugar”. The ancient Egyptian art of body sugaring is a method for removing body hair, that is a cheap, homemade alternative to waxing (or shaving). The theory behind body sugaring is that the hair is removed by the root, and when it grows back there will be less of it, and it will be softer and not stubbly as it is if a razor had been used. It is done by making a paste of sugar, water, and lemon juice that has been heated to the softball candy stage. Most find sugaring less painful than waxing. You can find this readymade in the pharmacies. You can choose hair removal by threading, also called “Fatlah”. A thin, cotton thread specially designed for threading is doubled, then twisted. It is then rolled over areas of unwanted hair, plucking the hair at the follicle level. Unlike tweezing, where single hairs are pulled out one at a time, threading can remove short lines of hair, very precisely and when done professionally it’s quick and painless. Maybe it would be best to ask someone to do this for you, you can find many spas and esthetics in Sharm el Sheikh, who are offering this service.

Treat your body with oils… The blistering sun and windswept sands of ancient Egypt caused dry skin, burns and infections, just like today. Body oils, mostly olive oil, were so central to their well-being that workers actually received them as part of their wages. Both men and women used moisturizers on their skin to protect it from the arid climate. Sometimes people used honey on their skin -- both for the fragrance and its ability to hydrate. And men rubbed certain oils on their heads to stimulate hair growth or ward off baldness. Not so different from today! Although oils were a necessity for day-to-day living, the addition of fragrance transformed them into luxury items. The most valuable oils were those blended with flowers and other scents. You can find these scented oils in the perfume shops of Old Market.

A little body art‌ Henna not only decorated the nails and hair of the members of the ancient Egyptian royalty, but conditioned them as well through its medicinal properties. Physically, Egyptians felt henna improved the quality of hair and nails, spiritually, they believed, henna provided good fortune. This belief still holds true in many parts of the world -- for example, the henna ritual for brides of many cultures. Both women and men also used henna to stain their lips a deep red. Cosmetics companies offer henna-based lip stains even today. Henna is a natural dye. It comes from the dried leaves of a shrub called Lawsonia inermis. Its leaves are green, but after drying and crushing, they form a deep orange-red powder, containing iron is black. The powder is mixed with water to form a paste. Henna is a temporary dye and lasts on the skin or hair for several weeks before fading away. You can buy many products all over Sharm to achieve even semi-permanent tattoos for your skin. It will always leave a stain in the range of orange/red/brown, however, the exact shade can vary. Darkness varies with each person’s body chemistry, the area of body chosen, and the length of time the paste remained in contact with the skin. 42

Perfumes and fragrances‌ Perhaps because fragrance was so abundant in Egypt -- from scented flowers along the Nile to imported oils and tree resins -- the ancient Egyptians created a lot of perfumes. They used to apply almond oil, fragranced with Frankincense and Myrrh. In fact, the principal ingredients to most of their perfumes were lavender, lily, myrrh, thyme, marjoram, chamomile, peppermint, rosemary, cedar, rose, aloe, olive oil, sesame and almond oil. These perfumes were also an additive to a hot bath as well, as flowers like jasmine, gardenia, hibiscus, magnolia, and rose. All these with many other variety as your taste wishes are available in the perfume oil shops in Sharm el Sheikh.

The signs of time on your face…

For your hair…

Another beauty secret of this ancient civilization is reportedly a mixture of oil and lime. There was apparently jars of some kind of creams in the ancient Egyptian tombs, which was thought to be used as a cleansing cream. The oil would be hydrating (obviously, try using a lighter oil like grapeseed) and lime would be a natural exfoliant, therefore removing dead skin cells and impurities while keeping the skin well hydrated. Use 1 tsp sweet almond oil. 2 drops of Frankincense essential oil or Rose Attar. Mix these ingredients together and you have an excellent antiwrinkle cream. Cleanse your face and apply this to your face at night. Massage it in your skin gently for about 5 minutes, and wash off the next morning. An application of fresh ripe avocado to the face was not uncommon, left on for 20 minutes while avocado slices could be used to reduce eye puffiness. Another treasured substance was Aloe Vera used both for smoothening skin and healing minor cuts and burns.

We have mentioned henna as natural color for your hair, available in large variety in the shops in Sharm. The ancient Queen’s hair was cleansed with coconut milk or warm extra virgin olive oil to strengthen and condition. Amazingly, even then hair extensions were used for volume, applied using beeswax and resin. Egyptologists at the University of Manchester have discovered a gel-like substance, used to hold hair in elaborate styles, in mummies more than 3,000 years old. Further analysis of this “gel” revealed that it was composed largely of fats of coconut oil and butter scented with perfume. , They also discovered what could be called “curling tongs” next to the bodies, probably used to hold the hair in place while the gel was applied - as the gel solidified it held the curls in place.

Highlight your beauty with make-up … Ancient Egyptian culture is particularly interesting for their use of makeup. It’s not uncommon for archaeologists to find small clay pots of makeup in even the most humble tombs. Beauty was important to the Egyptians, but makeup served another purpose. The black eye paint came from powdered galena (a type of crystal rock). Today, we call the galena powder kohl. The dark lines around the eyes helped protect them from the sun. The green came from malachite powder (an emerald-colored mineral). Interestingly, scientists later found that the malachite powder actually helped protect the eyes from infection. Initate the lines as you see on the statue of Nefertiti, use modern eyeshadows, but the kohl you still can buy anywhere in Sharm. After all this, at the end of the day, dress in a simple white linen or cotton dress and now you are ready to receive your admirers. They will be thrilled to see you with soft skin, a hint of lotus fragrance, lush and shining hair and a beautiful face. Now, tell me, how does it feel to be like an ancient Egyptian Queen?
