EGYPT AIMS TO ATTRACT 200,000 IRANIAN TOURISTS Egypt is aiming to attract 200,000 Iranian tourists who could generate revenues of $250 million a year initially if they come to Egypt but only amid tight security regulations, said Hisham Zaazou, Egyptian tourism minister, said in a press conference in Dubai ahead of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM). “Egypt should take a piece of this pie,” he said. “Shiite sites are not in the [tourism] programme. We are not talking of Iran’s religious tourism to Egypt. We are talking about Egyptian temples and Sharm Al

Shaikh.” Salafists have voiced opposition to normalising relations with Iran, saying it could lead to the growth of Shia’ism in Egypt. On 1 April, more than 50 Iranians — the first official group to visit Egypt for tourism in decades — arrived in Upper Egypt amid tight security. The visit came as part of a bilateral tourism agreement signed in February. “The [Iranian tourism] file is not closed. We are in continued communication,” Zaazou said. Asked about the opening of dry hotels in Egypt, Zaazou said: “Islamic tourism is not the prominent kind of tourism in Egypt. It is not a subtraction of conventional tourism, it’s an add on… bikinis are still welcomed in Egypt and booze is still served,” he said, adding that licenses are granted for dry hotels because they are commercial ventures.

Pampering Pleasures MIX Visits the Ritz Carlton Spa Waking up to a bright, sunny morning, after a long week of work, activities and beach I really felt in need of some relief from stress and fatigue. Fortunately I knew this day will come and made an appointment in the spa of The Ritz Carlton Hotel. The resort is in the heart of the city and by entering from the heat of the early summer, I found a completely different world. Dark wood, candles and sweet fragrances welcomed me, somewhere in the distance soothing water sounds were mixing with light music, completing the Asian atmosphere of the Spa. Although I booked for a facial treatment, I wanted to see more of this unusually beautiful corner of Sharm el Sheikh. I met with Mr. Wael Ramadan, the director of recreation of The Ritz Carlton, who kindly walked me through the Spa. There are 10 rooms for massage treatments, where 2 are for couples ( for the ones in love), baths, steam and sauna rooms. The narrow corridors gave me the impression of a labyrinth, but also the intimacy and peace. All the while we were visiting every corner of the spa, the fragrance of roses, water sounds and music accompanied us. The Spa has many kinds of wellness treatments to offer, their vast menu for pampering body and soul promising a complete relaxation one can ever imagine. Touch or body therapies, massages, scrubs, baths with flower petals and essential oils, hairdresser and beautician completing the spa experience. They have packages well put together, intriguing and promising, by reading the menu it is a hard choice which one to pick. But for today I have booked for a facial treatment to relieve my skin of the hard rays of the desert sun.

and gentle strokes, triggering the pressure points, a true pleasure. Next she applied a soothing mask with collagen and covered my eyes with a moist cotton pads, turned the light lower and left me for 10 minutes to rest with wonderful relaxing music and aromatic fragrance oils. At this point I was very relaxed. I was startled when she came back and continued, but her attention to the tiniest details felt very good. She used mostly Clinians products combined with natural herbs and oils. This was much more than a simple facial; it was almost a full body experience. I moved on to the relaxation area, where she offered me a freshly pressed mango juice, then I was reading the booklet of the spa which is giving a full picture of the features of all treatments and tempting for the next visit. I was already thinking about to visit one of the Thai massage specialist … or maybe Swedish massage … or maybe the package of Cleopatra’s Indulgence, with massages, wraps and the famous queen’s milk bath, a unique experience for two and half hours of pleasure. After that my hair and nails done, feet relaxed by a foot massage, make up and I’m ready for the next stage of my life. While dreaming about it, I just vegged out in the soothing atmosphere of the spa until it was time for me to leave. On my way out I met again with Mr. Wael, who told me, that there is a possibility also for the residents to come and enjoy the spa, becoming a member in the fitness centre – which has ulterior benefits on our health and body – residents can have discounts on the features and treatments of the spa. Membership variety is very large, for information or reservation for the spa simply call: 069-366-1919.

The description of my facial in the spa menu promised “50 minutes of pure bliss and relaxation” and my esthetician, Raina, kept that promise. She gave me a treatment on a massage table that included pressure-point modeling massage on my face, she used essential oils, that enriched and enhanced the experience. The facial began with a thorough cleansing followed by a gentle enzyme exfoliation which was not at all abrasive, then a kind steam, that warmed my skin and opened my pores. Then she started the deep cleaning, I don’t enjoy this process, but I like to have it done. Raina then massaged my face, long

How to Find a Diving Instructor in Sharm By John Kean Back in the UK recently I popped into my local golf club to arrange some lessons. The secretary personally escorted me on a short walk to the Pro shop, which wouldn’t have looked out of place alongside a row of smart boutiques. Outside was a brass plate with the name of a golfing instructor. ‘That’s our club professional’, he said, proudly. ‘Let’s go inside and I’ll introduce you’. SCUBA professionals are rarely marketed as individuals opposed to other sports. A search of websites of the leading Sharm dive centres revealed only one centre that listed the credentials of their leading staff; so why, the big secret? How can you find out about the people who will spend 60 hours a week with you, preventing you from drowning or getting bent? Surely that is more significant than improving your swing or perfecting your backhand. On the other hand you do have the excitement of ‘lucky dip’ where you book your holiday, pass over your cash and then wait to see whom you get! It rarely happens in other sports where you actually choose your instructor or coach first. It is also true that dive centres employ a larger number of trainers and guides than many other sports. A golf club normally has just one. In this respect the reputation of teaching is often attached to the dive centre as a whole rather than a collection of individuals. Generally, good centres attract good diving professionals and vice versa, so in choosing a reputable dive school you shouldn’t go far wrong. If individual choice is important to you, such as in higher-level diver education or technical diving then seek out instructors who will suit you best. Some may have several years experience and excellent reputations. Others may be newer but with a great attitude and a fresh approach to this growing sport, so don’t be put off by a well-trained newcomer. You can find them by visiting dive centres or by seeking them out yourself. If their marketing is any good then they should be easy to find. Dive professionals have a wealth of information having undergone at least six scuba courses and an apprenticeship where they learn about the following subjects: Dive planning, equipment, the underwater environment, assisting student divers, physics, physiology, emergency management and first aid, supervising qualified divers at sea and much, much more. What’s that? You thought they were one up from a deck-chair attendant in Blackpool or just a holiday rep in a wet suit! Dive professionals will have paid thousands of pounds for their training and equipment not to mention yearly renewals for professional membership and insurances and here in the Red Sea they dive nearly everyday. In other words, they know a thing or two so tap them on the shoulder and get chatting. The brochures and websites will list all the choices but it’s the dive staff that will add the colour and spice. Safe and happy diving.

Camel Tandoori is already a well established restaurant, and is popular with local residents and visitors alike. The restaurant opened its doors in 1997 and has become an award winning venue since and received many top reviews. Is it still living up to its name after all these years? Mix Magazine decided to put them to the test! Nestled in the bustling centre of Naama Bay, the restaurant is easy to find on one of the main lively pedestrian streets. It is located inside the famous Camel Dive Hotel. Indian cuisine is globally appreciated and enjoyed. It encompasses a variety of aromatic herbs and spices and reflects a wonderful blend of diverse cultures and regional influences

I was greeted with a warm smile and was seated at my well presented table with clean and crisp red and white table cloths and candle light. My waiter Ahmed introduced himself and was willing and knowledgeable to answer any questions I had. The air was filled with mouth-watering aromas of meats and spices. The menu is extensive and has a pleasing selection of appetisers and main courses including tandoori speciality dishes from their exclusive clay oven, and a full variety of meat and fish curries to suit all tastes. This includes unique signature dishes and also the traditional favourites such as Madras, Rogan Josh and Korma Sauce. What also makes this menu stand out from others in Sharm is its comprehensive selection of vegetarian dishes including Paneer and Dal. I began my dining experience with Pappadums. The Pappadums were fresh, warm and crispy and had a well balanced taste of spices. To accompany the Pappadums, the cucumber Raita was refreshing, the Mango Chutney was perfectly tangy, and the Mint Spicy Yoghurt was a herbal and spicy taste explosion. The restaurant boasts a resident Head Chef from Delhi, India called Abhay. He was welcoming and informative. I and some other diners were invited into the open kitchen which was immaculate, to observe and participate in the making of naan bread. Each order of bread is freshly made and cooked in a

clay oven heated by charcoal to give it its unique and delightful taste. My dishes arrived promptly. I continued with Chicken Tikka Ajwaini, Paneer Masala and Onion Kulcha Naan. The Chicken dish was described as having hot Indian spices; however the waiters were more than happy to meet my request for a medium flavour. A very generous portion size arrived on a sizzling oven plate and was a visual delight of colours and robust aromas. The marinated chicken was piping hot and succulent, juicy and moist. It did melt in your mouth and there was a faultless balance of fresh herbs and spices such as cardamom, aniseed and coriander accompanied with crunchy vegetables and onions. There was a perfect texture to the paneer, soft and crumbly; and this fresh and versatile flavoured cheese was complemented with a creamy fragrant and flavoursome Masala sauce. The freshly baked naan was light, warm and delicious with its heavenly taste of caramelised onions and fresh coriander. Irresistible when dipped into the luscious Masala sauce. The dessert menu has an Italian influence and there is a variety of refreshing items and ice cream, as well as the more devilish options for those of you who have a sweet tooth! I opted for the Coppa Di Melba and was not disappointed! The ingredients were fresh, appealing to the eye and palate pleasing. The ice cream was velvety and the waffle biscuit was crispy and delicately sweet.

The restaurant is set in an outside courtyard area and the decor is clean, simple and pleasing to the eye. The lighting is low and enhanced by candle light, and the overall ambiance is trendy with the soothing sounds of chill out lounge music playing in the background. The service is excellent and attentive, without being intrusive. Another highlight of dining here is you can observe the chefs expertise in action, as they flame grill and simmer in an impressive open style kitchen. The waiters are also elegantly presented in traditional dress which enhances the overall excellent and high quality dining experience. Summer in Sharm is hot, but don’t fear as the courtyard boasts cooling fans and mist sprays so you can enjoy your food under the clear night sky and a pleasant temperature. After your meal, finish a perfect evening and enjoy a hot or cold beverage, or choose from one of the many cocktails in the air-conditioned Camel Bar or stylish rooftop setting. To thank Sharm visitors for dining at Tandoori, guests will receive a voucher for 10% discount off their total bill to use on their next visit to Camel Bar, Tandoori or Pomodoro; the hotel’s Italian restaurant. Sharm residents may use their Camel card for 20% discount at Tandoori, Camel Bar, Pomodoro and Vanilla. Contact a member of staff for an application form. Reservations are recommended. NIGHT LIFE

Starry, Starry Night at

Farsha Mountain Lounge Once upon a time, long time ago, when Sharm el Sheikh was just a little town, people came here to rest from the stress of the big city life and business, enjoying the unique scenery of the Red Sea and the tranquility of the mountains – so I heard. Many years have passed since then and Sharm became a big city itself, although the scenery is still the same, but the night is loud of the many people, the raving music and the cacophony of all the mixed attractions. It became everything, but not a chilled out place anymore. So it is, since a long, long while, but some 8 years ago, a man, who missed the thrill of the old ways of Sharm el Sheikh, has decided to make his dream come true, laid his hands on a cliff side in Hadaba and the Farsha Mountain Lounge was born. It is not easy to describe this place, while it is giving so many kinds of emotions to the one who is entering. Although hardly can be found any advertisement of Farsha, but when you ask, everybody knows this place. It’s a beloved spot for its unique atmosphere. Visiting during the day or in the night gives you a completely different feeling, seems that it’s not the same place. The Lounge is mostly popular at night under the stars. On arrival from the street side, there is a modest entrance, one could even miss it, then a long way down on wooden stairs. From above, the lounge offers quiet a mysterious view. Countless candles are

illuminating the corners and the tables, gentle relaxing music in the air and the fantastic view of the bay at night in front of us. After descending, the entrance doesn’t seem to be an entrance, starting with small terraces hanging over the depth of the cliffs, stuffed with simple but soft cushions and small brass tables. Each separate space is enough to sit for a group of friends or a couple, in all intimacy. When you go further inside, the main part of the lounge opens up and it’s tickling all your senses. To see … so many details, to hear … pleasant melodies of chill out music, to smell… the fragrance of the shisha… all embraced by the gentle breeze of the sea. Seems we have landed in the fairy lands of the Arabic tales. You’ll be welcomed and seated in one of the many group sitting areas, on the floor with pillows and carpets. If you want to, you can mingle with the others already there or just keeping it private with your friends or beloved. Fresh fruit juices, quick bites, icy cocktails and so much more on the menu. After ordering your drinks, it is time to look around and there is much to notice. Antiquity wherever your eyes can catch. So many details, it’s hard to mention, all illuminated with candles. From very old doors

from all over Egypt placed on the cliff side, lamps, pictures, candle holders, an old motor bike in the middle, even the wrought iron railing is from other times. Ordinary, but long forgotten objects, waking memories. Everything you see or touch gives the feeling of the past and the way back to nature. The view even in the night is breathtaking with the diving boats and night divers, gentle sea breeze and music. I have met with the man who dreamed and created

this enchanted world. He told me, that his passion is to collect old things, especially doors and wanted to share with friends and guests the magic of the desert night, lounging in Bedouin style simplicity with the touch of the old times. He said, he wants to keep the tranquility of the Lounge for his guests and for this he is not planning to enlarge or advertise. All in all, Farsha, the Mountain Lounge, is the perfect secret hide-out for all Sharmers, quiet and kind service and a magical atmosphere to chill out under the stars of the desert and the Red Sea.

HOW DID ALL OF THIS START? Well, I came to Egypt because I thought it was a particularly fascinating country. And of course as a tourist in Sharm El Sheikh I had to experience all of the trips and tours I was offered. But, I often met some “Uninvited Guests”.

WHICH MADE YOU THINK PROFESSIONALLY? Defiantly, having a 30 year old successful business back in Italy in the field of pest control made me wonder, why not bring the business to Egypt? So, when I asked my current Manager (The Fratini Co. LTD.) Dr. Cicchitti if he wanted to join me on this adventure, him being a frequent Sharm El Sheikh visitor and a great manager; left him no place for argument, it was already a sealed deal.

DID YOU FIND IT DIFFICULT TO REGISTER? Not at all, I believe that Egypt is going by just fine and with our amazing law firm, managed by Mr. Mohamed Huessin Madi and Mr Fawzy El Metwaly –Phone: +20 100 178 885- everything went by smoothly and professionally.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE?

We specialize in pest control and environmental rehabilitation, where our strength is given by our highly experienced professionals. As for our products, they are non toxic and environmental friendly; thus not harming any humans or pets, allowing us to guarantee the final result. We eliminate everything from cockroaches, ants, and mice to mosquitoes and bed bugs. The latter sadly being very common, since Sharm El Sheikh is a resort with great receptivity.

ARE YOU CURRENTLY HERE IN SHARM? Yes, we are currently in “Domina Coral Bay”, but starting next January we’ll be moving to our new office in Hadaba.

OKAY THEN, EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE GOING PERFECTLY. ANY AFTERTHOUGHTS? Oh yes, a big problem we’re facing is the exchange rate, since the Italian products are really expensive, and of course there are transportation and custom fees. But having the support of the company’s branch in Italy, with its strong consumption, helped us reduce the difference in currency by offering competing prices, to benefit the end user. That’s why our company is based on total guarantee concerning the end results and not the high price tags. We all know how annoying it is to live with “Uninvited Guests” and how they force us to throw our money out of the window by buying expensive toxic products with terrible results. So, call for an appointment to guarantee the perfect result you’ve been waiting for, the same perfect result that the protocol imposes.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, AND AS THEY SAY IN ITALY “BUONA FORTUNA”! Thank you and all of the Mix readers.

LIVING

The

BOYS in

RED

Every year thousands of tourists flock to the shores of Sharm el Sheikh to experience a week or two of ‘living the dream’. Most of these people will go on a boat to SCUBA dive, snorkel or even just swim in the crystal clear waters of the Red Sea. Whether you are an experienced diver, a Diving Instructor, or just someone who enjoys a day out on the boat, it seems the lifestyle or holiday experience is without ‘a care in the world’ and that is exactly what the people who work behind the scenes want you to experience – as after all you are on holiday. Occasionally we need to shine the light on these people who relentlessly work behind the scenes. As PADI people (diving professionals) we are all familiar with the expression of ‘In the unlikely event of …….’ But what if, on that one day, it wasn’t ‘living the dream’ and something happened – who are you going to call? Your Dive Instructor/Master will call + 20 1223134158 the emergency telephone number of S.A.R. For the past 12 years S.A.R has

40

been busy saving lives at sea and generally making Sharm el Sheikh’s waters safer than ever before. With any medical emergency out at sea the main priority is to provide First Aid, but essentially it is to get the person transferred as quickly and safely as possible to a medical facility. This is what the boys in red do, amongst many other important marine safety services. YOU NEVER KNOW, ONE DAY YOU MIGHT NEED THOSE COURAGEOUS BOYS IN RED If you know about S.A.R and the boys in red – allow me to remind you, if S.A.R is totally new to you – allow me to introduce you. The organization is unique as it is privately owned, yet provides a continuous rescue service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. That in its self is quite incredible. S.A.R started out with just one fast rescue craft named ‘Cyrus’, unfortunately this craft was lost after only five days of operation when the crew went to rescue a

By Moira Tune

sinking vessel in the Straits of Tiran between the Egyptian and Saudi coastlines. This only highlights the bravery of the rescue crew and the dangerous conditions they face when called out. Fortunately ‘Cyrus’ was returned to the centre a year later from the Saudi rescue counter-parts. Since the early days of ‘Cyrus’, S.A.R has now attended over 3400 interventions ranging from serious life threatening medical evacuations to simpler situations which required medical treatment. With any medical situation out at sea S.A.R are on call regardless of the time it takes, the state of the sea and medical insurance cover. The facility currently has a fleet of 11 boats, all designed for fast rescue interventions, equipped for day and night operations. There are 17 members of highly trained rescue crew who work in shifts around the clock to provide 24 hour cover. This team of Doctors and trained rescuers are extremely dedicated to their work and are all specialized in their field, with many years of experience in sea rescue.

MIX June 2013

Due to the professionalism and dedication of the operation, S.A.R was officially accredited by numerous maritime organizations. The operation works closely with the Hyperbaric Chamber in Sharm and in Dahab (of which it is part owner), Sharm el Sheikh’s medical facilities, the Egyptian Navy and Coast Guard, Marine Police and also the National Parks offices. In almost every country in Europe there are government funded rescue operations which work tirelessly to keep people safe at sea. We without a doubt, applaud the courage of these rescuers and their selfless commitment to their work. We should also take time to praise the work of S.A.R. and appreciate that they provide this service as a private company. The operation has 350 members who are boats and diving centers, they also work with insurance companies who cover medical assistance such as D.A.N., amongst other reputable companies. These insurance companies have since modified their policies to cover the services of S.A.R so that the operation can re-cover some of its costs.

the environmental services which protect the marine life S.A.R provide. The environmental services include permanent water way surveillance and pollution monitoring. It also assists the Bedouin fishing communities. Recently S.A.R has started working in the Gulf of Suez to provide standby safety for oil and gas platforms and shore line pollution surveys. In emergency environmental situations booms are deployed to contain oil spills which would have a devastating effect on the marine life if not contained. For the second consecutive time the company has won the BP (British Petroleum) offshore standby safety contract for the BP Gulf of Suez platforms. These projects are fundamentally important to financially shore up the community rescue operation. S.A.R has proven to be able to

diversify in the changing climate of the country, but also remains committed to sea rescue and safety. So I say ‘Chapeau’ to the boys in red who set out in high seas to provide specialized medical treatment and fast effective transfers. Whether you are on holiday or a resident, I believe, we all would wish to say a big thank you to the companies and people who work behind the scenes keeping us safe at sea, to the people who support S.A.R with membership fees and to the crew, doctors and the founder. Just remember Sharm el Sheikh’s beautiful crystal clear waters are ‘living the dream’ – so go and enjoy yourself but don’t forget to take out a valid medical insurance policy, as you never know, one day you might need those courageous boys in red.

S.A.R is an independent and self sufficient operation and apart from the primary role of maritime medevac, the company also provides many other invaluable services which help to keep (excuse the pun) the rescue operation financially afloat. Many Sharm residents and the diving community are probably completely unaware of
