Currency Crisis Discussions Egypt’s businessmen union held a meeting in January which discussed the consequences of the falling exchange rates of Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian currencies on Egyptian tourism and exports. Ahmed Balbaa, head of the tourism committee at the Egyptian Businessmen Association, said the Russian roubles decline against the US dollar had caused a fall in the numbers of Russian tourists to Egypt by 50 percent; he also noted this has been exacerbated by the currencies’ black market. Balbaa suggested that commercial exchanges

between Egypt and Russia be made based on an exchange of the currencies of both countries. He explained that if that the barter system is applied, it would help reduce foreign spending, alleviate currency fluctuations and lessen losses in tourism and exports. Mr.Ahmed Balbaa also suggested a reconsideration of rates quoted for hotel Ahmed Balbaa reservations as well as taxes imposed on tourist and hotel are likely to be felt in Sharm services. British Airways to fly direct

Good news for Sharm el Sheikh’s International airport and it’s jet setting visitors. British Airways who announced that they will be launching two direct flights to Cairo and Sharm el Sheikh in September from London Heathrow have now increased it to three flights per week.

Mervat al Alfi British Airway’s North Africa Commercial Director said they were targeting an increase of passenger rates per flight to an increase of 90% coming to Egypt this year. He commented that British tourism never ceased despite the difficult times and now the company has optimistic views regarding travel movement to Egypt especially during the next two years hence the increase in direct flights. 4

28th February Engineer Khalid Abdul Aziz the Minister of Youth and Sports and General Khalid Fouada Governor of South Sinai opened the first ever Karate Premier League Championship hosted in Sharm el Sheikh. The delegates were happy to explain the importance of Egypt supporting such events and how by hosting international sporting events it raises Egypt’s name in the sports world equally giving excellent opportunities to the youth to not only compete but also to have valuable cultural exchanges. The tournament hosted 460 athletes from 37 countries including Egypt, Chile, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, Congo, among others and took place on the 28th February finishing on the 1st March. Half Crown Reopens in Hadaba The popular Half Crown Pub has moved to a new location in City Council Street adjacent to The Rock Hotel. The bar celebrated the reopening with a lavish BBQ and a Karaoke night. The event was attended by Sharmers from all over the city and the part rocked on until 3am. The bar has been beautifully renovated with new floors and a complete makeover for the outdoor terrace. The pub keeps its homely feel and hints of the old T2 are still there for those who remember! SPOTLIGHT Little Buddha gets a Façade Lift Ukrainian artist Anatoliy working in conjunction with Mr. Ahmed Sherief of the Air Flect company having produced a stunning piece of which now graces the entrance of Little Buddha. Guests passing the Tropitel Hotel may admire the piece for its beauty without appreciating the work that went into the project to achieve the shine and feeling of movement. Each of the 35,000 sequins is made up of 6 layers of PVC to produce the two-tone golden 3cm diameter sequin paillettes. The structure took over a week to produce and more than 10 hours to install onsite. Anatoliy has been working on this kind of art work for the past 3 years in Ukraine, for companies such Dior, Coca-Cola and Heineken while this is Air Flect’s first project in the Egypt. The shining mosaic engenders different feelings from different perspectives and different times of day. At night it has a natural reflective effect that does not require electricity; during the night time it is like a screen while during day time produces a relaxing feeling for visitors to this famous venue. he last time I visited Genena City on my mission to find Broadway, I passed lots of interesting attractions without the time to investigate further; it seemed another trip to this vast mall of surprises was in order to fully explore what was on offer.

My first port of call was the ice-skating rink. It always strikes me as strange to find ice in the desert but there it is a patch of ice with a readymade slalom course. Located 10

on one of the lower floors near the kid’s area, the skating rink is open from 1pm to 1am daily. Everyone can enjoy the fun for just 30le for a half an hour or 50le for a whole hour of skating. You’ll need to wrap up warmly as the air temperature seems as cold as the ice, but once you are flying around the 300sqm area having fun the cold isn’t a worry. The four pillars in the middle of the rink give you ample opportunity to try out turns and weaves with no chance of getting hurt – they

have cleverly encased them in Perspex so if ( or in my case when) you do crash it is not a problem. For anyone better than me the figures of eight you can carve are great fun. Once you’ve finished running rings around the skating rink there is plenty more to do upstairs. Whether you like your balls big, small or virtual there is something to keep you happy. It seems that Genena really goes have something for everyone. If you like to crash big balls MIX March 2015

They have private areas where you can game with friends while relaxing in comfy leather chairs and when you want a break there is a great lounge area where smoking I permitted – one of the few places indoors! The prices won’t break the bank at 20le for an hour plus there is table tennis and other attractions once your trigger finger gets worn out. The kids can play in the arcade games for a mere 10le per hour which seems bargain – cheaper than a babysitter!

Next door to the arcade zone is the billiard room. The place has the feel of a Gentleman’s club with sumptuous leather chairs and low lighting. Strictly speaking there are Pool tables not full sized billiard or snooker tables, but at 30le per hour certainly a nice environment to while away some time whilst the wife goes shopping. The ice-skating rink is open from 1pm until 1am and the bowling alley, billiard room and arcade games are open from 4pm. Everything is clean and colourful and if you have little ones with you they can raise the gutter bumpers so no one needs to score zero. This is also available if you just think you might be really bad and don’t want to be embarrassed by missing the pins all the time. There are only four lanes, but at 30le per hour it is good value. Picture yourself; soaking up the sun whilst sipping a cool beverage and tucking into a plentiful platter of succulent seafood – and where do you see yourself? Most Sharmer’s would say without a doubt “Terrazzina”. So let us shed a little light on this gem of a place that has become a Sharm institution and where we call home. There are in fact two Terrazzinas, which can for some cause a little confusion, however for most long term residents there is still only one and that’s the original which is just opposite the old market next to Iberotel Palace hotel on the shores of Sharm el Maya. So what is Terrazzina? It’s a beach, a hang out, a party place, a chill out zone and one of the best places for fresh seafood especially on a Friday. Terrazzina is whatever you would like it to be – it’s a place for people; friendly, fun, fresh and funky.

for everyone, but the main sensation is the seafood which is bought freshly from Alexandria the home city of the famously friendly owners Mohamed Samir and Amr Darwish. Seafood is served everyday but on Friday the Chef lays out the ‘catch of the day’ on a large ice cart. The display is impressive; quality fresh fish and seafood. If there are more than one of you, then the best way is to order a whole fish from the selection. Denise is a favourite for firm white flesh, but equally the Barboni (small sweet succulent goat fish) are just as good. A whole fish can be cooked to your liking either oven baked with tomatoes, potatoes, spices and herbs or grilled or fried. For seafood lovers try the ‘Candolfli’ steamed clams or the massive jumbo shrimps.

Although I’ve set the scene for seafood, Terrazzina can’t be mentioned without talking about the Bedouin bread. No other bread quite matches it. When you walk onto the beach look left and there almost every day you will see the ‘Bread maker’ stretching and smoothing dough and placing it on an open fire. The result is a delicious thin crispy bread which is perfect for dipping into Tahini and Babaganoush. Most of the main courses are automatically served with

bread, salad, rice or French fries – but don’t forget to order the tahini as this is the traditional condiment for fish. Basically kick the ketchup as tahini rocks. So after you have lazed the morning away and finished feeding yourself, maybe you feel like upping the tempo? Terrazzina is known for its Friday party vibe Ibiza Bora Bora style. The DJ carefully cranks up the sounds; switching from chill out tunes to beach house vibes. Terrazzina One doesn’t

go all out for the beach party vibe – that’s across the bay at Terrazzina Too, but you still might want to wash down your lunch with a bevvie or two to get with the groove. Just as Terrazzina is top for seafood they also have a clever little trick of offering booklets of beer. It’s cheaper and definitely cheerier if you buy a book. Oriental lights of 1001 Nights By Moira Tune ndulge yourself in a night of exotic Arabian dance and let yourself to be transported to the realm of a thousand and one nights at Pacha’s new show aptly named ‘Oriental lights of 1001Nights’. Every night of the week at 9.00pm (except Thursdays) Pacha puts on this beautifully choreographed performance showcasing the arts of oriental dance.

The show is preformed in four acts of dance. The first act is enacted by five female dancers and one man who are dressed in traditional Andalusy/Harem costumes. The dancers carry you into an Arabesque ambiance dancing to the best classic beats mixed up with some fashionable favourites of the latest Arabic hits. With the vibe set the second act is a solo performance by Pacha’s professional belly dancer. Her exotic and exquisite moves will melt you, as she twirls and teases the audience to the beats of traditional tabla music. The magic of her moves and the tempo of the tabla are mesmerizing, casting you into that fairytale word of 1001 nights.

Following on from the solo performance is the Tanoura show. The male duo dancers start to twirl with one arm aloft and the other cast downward. Their steps quicken to the Sufi/ House beats until their colourful capes are a blur of reds, blues, yellows and greens. Their shape is morphed into a whirling cone of colour with fluorescent lights to highlight the movement. It is an amazing act and takes dedication and training to master the pace of fine circular steps which dates back to centuries old. The grand finale of the ‘Oriental Nights of 1001 Lights’ is the fire show. The trio of performers from Russia, Mexico and Italy demonstrate their talent with show stopping moves to pump the audience full of adrenaline. It’s fun and fiery and creates the perfect high for the finale of the show.
