ACTIVITIES

FLYING HIGH Parasailing has always been a popular activity in Sharm El Sheikh. MIX took to the sky to see what it’s all about! By Jacqueline Don-Duncan 12

MIX April 2013

With a whole host of parachutes scattered daily along Sharm’s skyline you’d be hard pushed not to notice at least one parasailor airborne during your stay in Sharm. An attractive activity to those interested in extreme sports, parasailing in reality is a gentle ride in the sky that gives you access to unforgettable aerial views over Sharm El Sheikh and provides you with the most amazing experience of flying through the air parachute attached, all without the extremities of throwing yourself from a plane and enormous heights. An activity that once seen by most becomes a must, parasailing could be best described as parascending behind a boat. Strapped to a parachute and attached by a long rope to a boat you are tailed whilst the boat sails, the parasailor reaching a height of no more than 90m. There are plenty of places to try parasailing throughout the Sinai and beyond but it was Sun ‘n’ Fun that put MIX through their paces at their Hilton Fayrouz based centre in Na’ama Bay. I got the job of roving reporter – it was to be my first flight since I arrived in Sharm a few months back. Start to finish parasailing will require approximately 30-40 minutes of your time taking into consideration numbers and travel to and from the boat – the actual flight itself is approximately 12 minutes long. From the moment you arrive to check in for your flight at the counter you are whisked off by zodiac to the powerboat rigged with parachuting equipment. All very exciting the zodiac takes you at speed through the water, clips of ‘Baywatch’ sprang to mind (was it really the MIX photographer that sat next to me or David Hasselhoff I asked myself, fortunately the video hit pause as the boat bumped into the wake bringing me back to reality!)! So surprisingly popular parasailing attracts boats full of people on a daily basis. On the day of our flight the boat was packed with 6-8 people, and another 2 were waiting in the wings alongside us. It appears this is an activity for all ages, nationalities, shapes and sizes. And although you may suffer from a little pre-flight nerves you can rest assured as Sun ‘n’ Fun quoted “parasailing is not dangerous at all”, they continued “we always consult weather conditions putting safety first”. No technical lessons are given on land nor in the boat, but really the great things about this activity is there is little to know about parasailing before you can take flight. Strapped into a safety harness by the crew onboard you are hooked to the parachute at the rear of the boat whilst in a sitting position prepped for take-off. When ready you are released and fly from the boat with little else left to concern yourself with apart from holding on to side straps and enjoying the view. The flight is a breeze, an intoxicating experience and the only thing to re-awaken your senses before the end of your ride is the traditional body dunk into the Red Sea as the crew start to bring you back down torwards the deck of the boat for landing (this can be avoided on request of course!). A whole lot of fun, the crew are a blast and help to make parasailing a recommendable, enjoyable experience. Nothing needed on the day, though I would recommend should you wish to touch the water during the flight you think about what you wear! Girls watch out for bikini bottoms unless you are feeling cheeky of course! Enough said buckle up and enjoy the ride…I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you a safe and pleasant flight!

Retro Americana At Le Jolie Bistro By Hedvig Jeney

MIX May 2013

There is a restaurant in town, which raised my curiosity, while I was talking with my golfer friends the other day. They were warmly recommending me to go and have a delicious lunch or dinner in the Maritim Jolie Ville Golf and Resort Hotel, in the Jolie Bistro. Action following the thought, I have decided to have lunch there with a friend of mine. On arrival in the quiet, but busy lobby of the hotel, we immediately found the restaurant. When entering, a very interesting view welcomed us. In a cozy environment - warm colors and great smell of food were tickling our senses - on the wall we found numerous photos of famous American people – to my surprise, in police reports. On a closer look we found Mike Tyson, High Grant, Jim Morrison and so many other American stars in incident reports with the typical photos of the police. On other walls a variety of movie pictures and here and there phonographs and radios placed on the furnitures, all in all, we have

arrived to an American style restaurant. It was a beautiful day, so we decided to settle on the spacious terrace of Jolie Bistro, which has a beautiful view of the garden greens of the hotel, a small river which creates a little lake right by the terrace. The menu is written in two languages, the food is very international, we found Italian, French, Indian and American dishes, all described in a very appealing way. While reading the detailed descriptions, we have met with Mr. Mahmoud Hanafy, who is working here since the opening of the hotel in 1998. He told us about the history of the Bistro. It was ideated originally, as an American style steakhouse, but by the passing time it has changed to a sophisticated international restaurant. However, to stay true to the original idea, today we still can have 3 kinds of steak, the Ribeye, T-bone and Australian beef , just like an American steakhouse. The other very interesting

fact about the Bistro is, that they grow their own organic herbs and vegetables in the kitchen garden of the hotel, (their pesto is always freshly prepared from the daily collected herbs ) but they have also tomatoes, zucchinis, salads and so much more. While we were reading the menu, Mr. Hanafy told us, that every 3 months they change completely the list of the dishes served, while they want to offer the returning guests of the hotel and also to the local gourmet lovers a big variety of specialties. In fact, not far from the entrance of the restaurant, entrance there is a wall with the exhibition of all the repeating guests, a long line of pictures with families, and groups. Some of them are coming back more than 25th time.

The Carbonara was juicy and rich, the Ravioli with delicate cheese fondue sauce and mussels Finally we settled with our order, Spaghetti Carbonara and Scampi Ravioli, as first course, Veal Zurich and the Underwater Festival, as main course, Mississippi Mud Cake and Crème Brulèe, as dessert to crown this royal lunch. Looking at the drinks menu, I have discovered, that they are serving plenty of cocktails, from local and imported alcohol and have a wide selection of wines, with Italian, French, American and Egyptian brands, as well, as different kinds of sparkling wines and of course the most famous French champagnes. If someone wants to have a romantic or a business dinner, for small size parties they are also making special menus as the guests are wishing for. While waiting, our host told us about the stage on the terrace. As far, as we were having lunch, this stage was empty, so I asked what’s happening in the

18

evenings there. Mr. Hanafy told us, that every day there is another kind of show, always accompanied with live music. Monday, African, Tuesday Spanish, Wednesday Belly dancing, Thursday oriental, Friday fakirs, Saturday and Sunday international entertainment and magic show. In daytime it’s just soft music playing in the background. When our food started to arrive, I couldn’t be more surprised of the delicious quality and the beautifully decorated dishes. The Carbonara was juicy and rich, the Ravioli with delicate cheese fondue sauce and mussels. The tender veal and the typical Swiss rosti potatoes on one plate and the rich seafood platter called Underwater Festival with all, what the sea can offer us. All dishes, that we have chosen were amazing in taste, in variety and in look. The waiters were very kind and attentive, one can feel that by working together for many years, they became a family and this feeling they give also to the guests. When we arrived to the desserts, we were already completely satiated, but how can we resist the original Moevenpick ice cream, which is considered the world’s best? There is a comfortable and separated lounge area right beside the tables of the dining area for those, who want to have a coffee and ice cream or sweets without having lunch or dinner, or also for those, who want to finish the meal with the coffee or tea in another style environment. While the restaurant is open from 10:30 till 24:00, any time of the day one can have a delicious treat here. All in all, I have to thank to my golfing friends for recommending this restaurant to me, it was a delicious and fine dining experience, and I advice to all to try. Booking is by the hotel reception or call the restaurant directly at +20 (069) 3603 200-214.

NIGHT LIFE

Inside The Mind Of ....

By Chantelle Wilson SO, TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF … Well I’m 23 years old, I am from the beautiful city of Alexandria. I first came to Sharm in 2011 to progress further in my career of becoming a Deejay because I had heard about the big named Clubs that were here and wanted to put my name out there. WHERE AND WHEN DID YOU GET YOUR FIRST DJ RESIDENCY? Before I secured a residency I was playing at a lot of Events in Alexandria and Cairo. I travelled to Dahab in 2005 where I was offer a residency in Tree Bar, I stayed there for 3 years until I was offered a place of residency at Mojito Bar. I stayed at Mojito for 2 years, I loved playing in those kinds of venues, they were very relaxed and chilled out places. HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU DECIDED YOU WANTED TO BECOME A DJ? I was about 14 years old when my friends and I started mixing and playing around with music. It wasn’t until about 2002 when I developed a real passion for music. I suppose I have always been involved with music, when I was younger I really looked up to Michael Jackson, he was definitely my inspiration. WHERE WAS YOUR FIRST RESIDENCY IN SHARM? I played at an Event in 2011 on Terrizzina Too Beach, the Owner was pleased with my performance and offered me a weekly place to play every Friday. Are you currently playing anywhere else in Sharm or Internationally? Yes, I have several weekly positions at different plac-

26

es. I am playing at Camel Bar every Sunday, Monday and Wednesday. Like I mentioned before I’m at Terrizzina Too every Friday, Pacha on a Saturday and I have the opportunity to play once per month at Pataya. I do have contracts with two Record Labels; The Shine which is based in Russia and Miami House Hits, they basically help with my promotion and my bookings internationally. I also often play at Events held in Bahrain. OUT OF ALL OF THE PLACES YOU HAVE PLAYED, WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE? Most definitely has to be Pacha Sharm, the crowd and atmosphere is always electric. It’s very overwhelming being in front of such a large audience, it gives me goose bumps every single time. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? WILL YOU STAY HERE IN SHARM OR WILL YOU VENTURE ELSEWHERE? No I don’t see myself being anywhere else, Sharm is my home now, because such a large variety of nationalities of people come here its great to meet new people and friends. The lifestyle here is amazing, I cant see myself living anywhere else and I would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to live abroad to come to Sharm. I will continue with my Deejaying career but ive also started producing music. I would like to have a career in both fields. I have a friend M-Wassem who is working with me on a new style of music, its called Na3Naa3, it’s a form of Arabic/House music so im hoping that will take off.

NOSTALGIA

What T To O N Wear in Sharm By Moira Tune If you are from the UK, you are no doubt familiar with Trinny and Susanne from the hit T.V program ‘What not to wear’, if your not then basically these two ladies strip, remodel, and finally praise their subject into wearing the correct attire. So here is our version on maybe a more positive angle of ‘What Not to wear’ whilst in sunny Sharm. Originally Published in 2005, yet even more valid today!

MIX May 2013

It’s understandable that there is a lot of excitement when the time finally arrives to pack for your holiday. As you throw your sexist slip dress, your tiniest bikini, and your lowest plunge top into your case, you maybe drift off and dream of that bronzed diving instructor you want to catch the eye of, or just maybe in reality from your choice of clothes you catch less than flattering looks from others. So here’s our guide on getting it right, looking fabulous, and catching the right admiring looks. Sharm el sheikh is a melting pot of many different cultures, religions, and traditions. Within the 10km coastline you could probably meet a least ten different nationalities, all with different upbringings. So it’s a difficult task to catch the right eye, and a difficult choice in clothes of what to wear when, to get the right type of attention. I think anybody cruising through the airports have noticed the HSBC ad campaign of the same thing meaning totally different things in different countries, with some signs meaning good things, and exactly the same sign being a huge insult in others. Well here in Sharm it is all squeezed in, (excuse the pun) into one small city, but there are a few basic rules all governed by common sense. Naama is the main tourist area in the city. Fringed by a 1km beach, dotted with restaurants, bars and clubs it is the most cosmopolitan and the place to be seen. However although beach attire, your skimpiest bikini, or your dare I say Speedo’s are fine on the beach, it is not a good look to wander the promenade outside Camel, Pacha, and McDonalds. Bronzed is a good look, lobster red is not – so cover up. Your waiter is dressed smart and clean to give you the best service, so it is not really appropriate to sit your wet salty bikinied/speeded bottom down at a smart restaurant table. Ample cleavage can be nice, but the waiter doesn’t really want to be embarrassed when leaning over to serve your drink. It might work on the Costa del Sol, where you catch the waiters eye and are suddenly surrounded by lithe Spaniards, but here you will probably find it works the opposite, and for

MIX May 2013

no want of trying you don’t get the waiters attention. He is way too embarrassed to come over to your table, and probably trying to get someone else to serve you. Put a top on and some shorts and you will have the best service and a happy smile, the same goes for walking into shops and the streets. When night falls for sure Naama Bay is the place to get glammed up, so pull out your party wear and get ready to groove. However if you have to get to Naama Bay, via taxi or mini bus, and you have a sky high

Put a top on and some shorts and you will have the best service and a happy smile skirt, and a low plunge top, then a scarf, pashmina, or sarong would not go a miss around your shoulders.Your taxi driver really does want to keep his eyes on the road to ensure you safe arrival. He does have to check in his extra large or several mirrors to see what the other cars are doing behind him, and if he keeps getting a glimpse of your wares, he might just get a wee bit jittery and wobble with the steering wheel. When I say glammed up – I do mean clothed. I think sometimes the sun is too hot and all logic flies out the window, and in one woman’s case I witnessed, it was obvious in her mind, just still too hot to wear anything. The poor lady went to buy her duty free goods at eight in the evening in just her g-string and high heels. Now I can’t really see anybody doing that at home, tripping down the aisles of your local supermarket clad in only g-string and a smile. Any man with blood running through his veins would have to take a look, and the guys in the Duty free shop haven’t probably seen their wives for six months – is it really fair??? Just glad she didn’t turn around and

ask them ‘does my bum look big in this’ they would of fallen off their stalls. More to the point do you really want six married men pinning for their wives staring at you with open mouths. Equally if you sashayed into Camel bar or Tavern dressed like that you would probably get the same reaction, or laugh, and most probably a comment as this guys have been topped up with lager. Keep it for the boat or the beach where you might get the attention from the bronzed diving instructor, and not a load of larger louts, or married embarrassed men. Moving on with the supermarket theme, how many times at home have you bought your veggies in a bikini?? Or popped out in your see-through negligee for a pint of milk, or done a little shopping at your local market in just a thin wrap-around sarong. I think not. Went visiting the Souk or Old Sharm remember what you would wear at home. This area is the shopping area where you can get anything from fresh meat, even fresher chicken (they are still alive), fashion items, and tourist tack. It’s a working area with most of the shop owners coming from un-touristy areas. They work hard, putting in long hours and spend months away from their families to earn money in order to send it home. Sometimes its hard to remember you are in Egypt, but if you enjoy the Egyptian tradition of bartering for your purchases and accept it as their way, then also appreciate a little of their other traditions, and understand it is not really appropriate to stand half naked in the downtown market. If they have to keep their eyes averted because of your dress then your bartering deal is not going to go smoothly. So for a happy holiday, and the right admiring glances keep your tiny bikini for the boat or beach, don t-shirts, spaghetti straps and shorts for the cafes and lunch, and then glam it up for Naama, and dress demure in downtown Sharm. After all there is nothing better than feeling fabulous with a newly acquired tan and getting a wink from a bronzed Adonis across the bar, but nothing worse than suddenly feeling very uncomfortable down in the Souk in just your bikini.

NOSTALGIA

Shark Observatory By Sabiha Hilmi

L

iving and diving in Sharm most people know Shark Observatory as a beautiful dive site but when was the last time you went to have a look by land? Shark Observatory is made up of a beach and two observatory points. The observatories are situated on the last cliffs before the tip of the Sinai Peninsula, not far from Main Beach, and give a wonderful overview of the sea and the surrounding area. Observatory beach is a small bay over a large coral plateau. It is wedged between the cliffs and another large rock formation to its right, which give it a wonderfully secluded feel. Observatory Beach is fine sand and leads down to the water over the plateau. The rocks on either side look as if they’ve been hollowed out on purpose and it’s turquoise and green waters are generally calm. The plateau is very long here so the choppy seas of winter have generally calmed by the time they reach the rock pool, ideal for the young and old alike. Floating in the water here it’s easy to imagine the rest of the world no longer exists. It is a wonderful place to get away from it all. To get to the Observatories themselves you must resist the lure of the water and take a left as you approach the beach. There is a small path there that runs between a large rock and the cliff itself and leads to stone steps leading up. The steps are shaded only part of the way up and as you approach the half way mark it levels off to a saddle between the two cliffs with a breathtaking view of Observatory Beach on one side and the sea on the other. This is where the path splits, the main observatory is on your right and the second on your left. The higher you get the more of a breeze there is so the climb doesn’t feel too strenuous. It’s definitely worth it. When you arrive at the main Observatory point the view is extraordinary. In front of you the Red Sea is a 180º giant and behind you stretches the National Park in all its glory. Looking around you the cliffs mirror the waves of the sea and looking down you can even make out the odd diver. The Second Observatory point is slightly further along to your left and offers a better view of the coral plate. From here you can look down and see the corals winking back up at you and you can see the fish clearly enough to name them when the visibility’s good; Porcupine fish, Emperor fish, Surgeon and Parrot fish to name but a few. It’s a lovely way to feel on top of the world without having to climb a mountain. Observatory Beach

Stork Season

The Observatories are also a great place for bird watching. Ras Mohamed is the main stop off point for the majority of migrating birds passing through on their journeys between Europe and Africa twice a year, not to mention a large variety of resident birds. In winter most of the world’s population of White Storks pass through Ras Mohamed and make an impressive sight circling overhead. You may also catch a glimpse of a fish eating osprey or even an Imperial Eagle which can be seen in winter through to spring. If you’re incredibly lucky you can catch a sight of the Greater Flamingo in summer. One of the best places to see most of these birds is off the coast and with their unrivalled views the Observatories are the place to be. The main Observatory even boasts its own telescope for those who are just plain curious or those of us forgot their binoculars. Shark observatory has it all; fantastic views and rocks to climb, without too much effort, and peaceful waters and secluded rock formations that make this a great place for a chilled day out. So what are you waiting for? Grab the family or a friend, pack a picnic and go check it out. It’s a beautiful place to spend the day and between the beach and the view from the Observatories time tends to fly by. To get to there follow the signs for Observatory Beach, No. 15 – orange on your Ras Mohamed National Park Map. The road does get a little bumpy towards the end but it is nothing even you average taxi couldn’t handle, so persevere. It’s worth taking a hat and wearing sunscreen. I would also recommend you take a bottle of water with you as on hot days with the wind you don’t feel the sun and it’s easy to get dehydrated and/or sun burnt. Ras Mohamed National Park is situated about 12 Kms by land from Sharm El Sheikh. The park is open daily until sunset. Please remember, when you’re in the National Park make sure any litter you have goes into the bins provided and help keep it beautiful. - Do not touch anything underwater - Do not feed the fish - Do not collect, remove or damage any materials, living or dead (corals, shells, fish, plants, fossils, etc...) Take nothing with you – Leave nothing behind

DIVING INTO UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY Text and Photos by Sarah Woodford

It was not so long ago that only the elite few could return with evidence of the weird and wonderful creatures they had seen underwater, but since the arrival of Digital technology and its huge variety of compact and relatively cheap cameras, Mum, the neighbours, the cat and of course everyone on Facebook can now share the experiences!

MIX May 2013

39

NOSTALGIA

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to become the next David Doubilet, (the underwater version of David Bailey) but before you rush off to terrorize the fish, there are a few things to consider. DO I NEED TO BRUSH UP MY DIVING SKILLS?

‘I thought my buoyancy was great but when I got a camera in my hand, I realized it was s***!’ one of my underwater photography students recently lamented. The sad thing is that many divers are not as well balanced as they think. Adding a camera could be a potential cause of coral damage as they get in close for that special shot. Try taking ‘pretend’ pictures …..Imagine holding a camera with both hands, turning it on, fiddling with adjustments and then waiting for that fish to turn towards you. Be realistic; if you can’t stay still underwater without wiggling your fins or arms for the amount of time needed to take a picture, you need to brush up your diving skills. The Peak Performance Buoyancy Course, offered by most diving centres, only takes a day and is the best thing a budding photographer can do; if you learn to move slowly and quietly the fish won’t be spooked, meaning you’ll get better photos! WHAT KIND OF CAMERA SHOULD I GET?

A really good idea is to ‘try before you buy’ with a rental camera to make sure you actually enjoy the concept of underwater photography before splashing out loads of money. Once decided, the choice of camera is endless and extremely confusing

40

as new models are being brought out all the time. Buying a camera is a bit like buying a house; suit your future needs, not just what’s good for now, and with as many pixels as possible (little squares of colour within the photo…. the more pixels you have, the bigger you’ll be able to blow up that ‘dot in the distance is a shark’ photo without it going fuzzy). Cameras which do everything ‘auto’ do sound rather nice but with time, can get a little restrictive so having extra adjustments such as white balance and ISO can bring out the creative side in you, and make a huge difference to the final result. If you already own a compact digital, there might be a waterproof housing available but you might find it’s rather limited and a new camera to suit your needs with a housing rated to the depth you are planning to dive to could be a better option in the long run. There are many reviews available online and in diving magazines to help make that decision. WHAT EXTRAS WILL I NEED TO GET?

Although initially, you might want to keep things simple, make sure your housing allows for some extras. Photos can look rather dull without a red filter or a strobe light, both of which bring out colour lost as a result of less light penetration underwater so the ability to add one or the other is vital. If you are happy with the excellent photos of fish, coral and your buddies that a compact camera lens can offer, that’s fine but if you are itching to photograph the entire stern of Thistlegorm and not just the end of the gun, a wide angle lens is a must. If it’s a tiny nudibranch you are after, better put a macro lens on

MIX May 2013

your Christmas list but be warned that only a few housings allow for the addition of extra lenses. WHERE DO I START?

An Underwater Photography Course makes sense but arriving with a brand new camera in an unopened box will only waste yours and the instructors’ time. Read the manual…even if you don’t understand everything at least you’ll get an idea of what it can do, and familiarize yourself with the camera by taking as many shots as possible on land, and even underwater. Fish make terrible models so concentrate on things that are less likely to move; self portraits are a great way to start with buddies coming in a close second! Once you’ve got a few shots under your belt, sign up for the course, where you can concentrate 100% on white balance, good camera angles, photo composition and distance, without the distraction of having to keep up with a dive group. Don’t be shy of showing your instructor the practice shots as they help to pinpoint which areas can be improved. The difference between ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots has proved again and again that taking a course really is better than just muddling through on your own. IS THERE ANY SPECIAL ETIQUETTE FOR UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHERS?

When the guide says ‘look, don’t touch’, they do mean everyone…without exception! If you can’t get

MIX May 2013

close enough without risk of touching the reef, just don’t take the picture! It’s unfair to expect an entire dive group, or even your buddy for that matter, to wait while you take 100 photos of a clown fish; either take a couple of photos ‘on the fly’ or pay a little bit more for a private guide so you can snap away in one spot to your hearts content. Avoid ‘diver rage’ by moving quietly and cautiously….you won’t be popular on the dive boat if you chase that manta into the blue just to get a shot! DO I NEED TO EDIT MY PHOTOS?

It is a rare photo that can’t be improved with a bit of editing. A touch more contrast or cropping a sliver can make a good photo look fantastic. At the other end of the scale, extreme editing can make your photo into cool underwater art. There are many programs available and some cameras come with their own editing suite. Always, always back up your photos as soon as possible and edit on copies, not the original as you might want to edit it in a different way at a later date. ANY OTHER TIPS?

Look at underwater photos in books and magazines to get different ideas. Understand that as your photos improve, it’s normal to get more self-critical but don’t be too hard on yourself…..just taking photos underwater at all is an achievement in itself!
