ULTIMATE MUSIC EXPERIENCE AT HARD ROCK CAFÉ WITH DJ SEAN MOON
On the 31st of August we could witness a rare event in Hard Rock CafĂŠ, when a special guest Dj has given the best beats to the crowd. DJ Sean Moon happened to be in town and entertained the dancing mob to the max. Sean Moon is a Radio/Club DJ and Music Producer based in London, originally from Mauritius and travelled around the world, playing sexy house and tribal house music. Just only this year he has been in London, the Caribbean Islands, Mauritius, Tunisia, Morocco and, of course, in Egypt. He loves Sharm el Sheikh and comes often to spend his holidays here. When he does, the clubs are all excited to have him for an event. He is since 16 years in the business, as a DJ, which started as a game, became a passion, then a job, which he enjoys so much. He is often helping new DJs to become a star by playing music together with them. Although he is busy lately with his new brand of urban clothing, Bang-Bang, he never says no to an invitation to entertain his fans with great house mixes for an ultimate rave experience. This year we will be able to enjoy his events again here in Sharm, although exact dates are not available yet, but we will keep the MIX readers informed.

ACTIVITIES
FITNESS IS FUN
STRESS RELIEF AND GREAT BODY Life is not easy on us here, in Sharm, lately. After a stressful and worrisome day most of us have the false idea of relax, in front of the television or the computer. We keep forgetting, that we also have a body to take care of and that exercise is a wonderful stress relief. So it’s high time to think about the coming autumn to get in shape and have some fun. Maybe even as family with your children. There is a place we can turn to, where experienced instructors can guide us to our goal to achieve or simply just shake out the nerves. Fit and Fun, Sharm el Sheikh. Fit and Fun has moved lately from Viva Mall to their new location which is in Hay el Nour, by the International Sports Development Centre. Brand new halls and locker rooms, showers and exercise tools waiting for the fun people. They are a nonprofit organization of the community of Sharm, their fees are covering only the expenses, so their prices are affordable for everyone. All the more, the more classes you take, the less you pay. Their classes and programs are so many, the variety is so large, why don’t you take a look and chose to try something new? You won’t need any fancy workout clothes, just the way you feel comfortable, they have no dressing code, most important for them is to provide fun and fitness with great tunes of music. The Fitness Centre was established by three ladies, Lara, Chris and Carol in 2009, right now Ms. Lara Gerdes is directing the club. I have met with Ms. Anta Draper, manager and instructor by Fit and Fun to ask more information for you about the classes, fees and possibilities. Anta, a very kind, energetic young woman, gladly told me all we need to know to start a new life and dive into fitness. Let’s see the long list of the classes they offer. PILATES - Pilates is an exercise system, that focuses on stretching and strengthening the whole body to improve balance, muscle-strength, flexibility and posture. Pilates is suitable for people of all ages. The difference between Yoga and Pilates is, that yoga has a more spiritual side that pilates does not. All you need is a mat, music and your instructor.
10
By Hedvig Jeney YOGA - Yoga is a mind-body practice, that combines stretching exercises, controlled breathing and relaxation. Yoga can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve heart function. And almost anyone can do it. SINAI PRINCESA WORKOUT - This is a class, where aerobic and circuit training is mixed into one. Available only for women, it is a type of interval training in which strength exercises are combined with endurance/aerobic exercises, giving the benefits of both a cardiovascular and strength training workout. STREET FIT - A class where workout and street dance is combined with very cool R&B music, great fun of dance, while you are working on your muscles. BALLET - They have basic training of ballet for different ages, 3-4 years, 5-6 years, adults and advanced choreography adult classes. Ballet at all age is giving a benefit of coordination, balance, endurance and ability. While enjoying the classical music, train your muscles with seemingly easy and gentle moves. GLEE - Glee is a class for children to perform on stage, let it be singing, dancing or acting. Fit and Fun has classes separately for girls and boys or also mixed for age groups like 4-7, 8-16. They prepare shows and theater pieces to and perform all around the city by invitation. KIDS YOGA - Yoga class for small children to learn discipline, relaxation, stretching and balance. This beginner course is perfect for the age 5 and +. A wonderful way to introduce alternative exercises to children. ZUMBA - Zumba is a latin- inspired dance fitness program, that has elements of aerobics within it. Zumba is for everyone regardless of shape, size, fitness levels and experience, as it focuses on having fun, whilst working out through the medium of dance. Zumba offers a complete workout without the

feeling of hard work. DANCE - Whether you like to jump or jive, tap or tango, shake your belly or your booty, dancing is one of the most enjoyable ways to get some exercise. Regular dancing is great for losing weight, maintaining strong bones, improving posture and muscle strength, increasing balance and co-ordination and beating stress. One of the best things about dancing is that, while you’re having fun moving to music and meeting new people, you’re getting all the health benefits of a good workout. HIP HOP - Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to groove into your workout. Hip hop dance is a fun and effective way to burn calories and get your heart pumping. This high-impact cardio workout engages the entire body and helps you build muscle tone. If you incorporate hip hop dance into your exercise routine, you may experience an increase in your energy level and an improvement in your overall physical fitness. MARTIAL ARTS - Judo e Karate belongs to this class, where boys and girls mixed are learning the basics of these martial arts. There is so much more to martial arts then know how to fight and defend yourself, it is teaching hard discipline, balance and muscle training. Most recommended for children. AREAL CIRCUS - This class is teaching all kinds of performing arts, especially with jumping on trapeze jumping and acrobatics. They have 2 classes, one for adults and another for the age of 8-15 years old children. Tumble Fun and Tiny Feet Gymnastics classes are for very small children to introduce fitness through playing and music. The Twirling and Fire Skills class will show you how to perform with fire and prepare shows for the students. Fit and Fun is organizing every year an annual recital festival for their students in Hyatt Regency

Hotel around May, preparing the show during the year with care. As they are a communal, nonprofit organization, they are constantly looking for sponsors and offering their spectacles of any age as entertainment for celebrations or feasts. They organize also Fund Raising Days where everyone can try the classes for a donation and have a taste of what they have to offer. The next one will be around Christmas, so look out for their news. Fit and Fun is planning to open another studio for the clients, who are living in Nabq or other further areas, in Soho Square. The opening will take place within the next weeks. For further information please check their website: http://www.fitandfunsharm.com Now, after all, if you really care for your health and your stress level , or you simply would like to switch off from the daily routine, it is time to gather the exercise garments and head to move your body on some real good music. The choices are many, it’s affordable, the instructors are professional and kind, the environment is perfect. No excuse, now. Let’s go!

PASSIONATE INDULGENCES Where should we go out tonight? – comes the typical question on a typical Friday night, which is always atypical in Sharm el Sheikh. Fine dining first, maybe some drinks in a bar and then dancing the night away in a club. Well, all this can be done in Little Buddha Bar in Naama Bay. Off we go for dinner to this famous
14
place, which is not only known for nightlife, music, drinks and dance, but also the restaurant has the fame for its “ best in town” cuisine. Entering early evening from the noisy streets of the centre, our senses are relaxing immediately by the

soft velvet boots with large pillows, making seating most comfortable. While studying the vast menu of the sinfully delicious Pacific Rim style dishes, to our surprise, the Assistant General Manager, Ms Rebecca, came to greet us, sat with us and took us on a journey of fine tastes, impeccable service and most interesting conversation. She is a very kind and professional presence, satisfying all our curiosity about the food, the music, the restaurant and all. Before diving into the menu, we chose from the large selection of drinks – indeed, eight pages of beverage menu – two cocktails, to kill the time until our food arrives, a Cosmopolitan from the Martini Arts selection and a Sake Mojito. Then came the moment of difficulties, by reading through the selection of dishes, four pages and another four for vegetarian preferences, to choose our food. As far, as they have a large variety of Sushi, we simply went in that direction, although all the menu is filled with most promising dishes.
Sharm el Sheikh as well – the name varies to Little Buddha. The giant Buddha statues vary, too, in the Buddha Bars both hands on his lap, while in the Little Buddha Bars his right hand is raised.“ At this point our starters arrived, soft and spicy Steamed Chicken Dumplings with Chili Soya Sauce and Tiger Shrimp Tempura with crispy Tempura Vegetables. Next came our Sushi, California Makimono Roll and Spicy Tuna Temaki. A real orgy of flavors for our taste buds. Chef Hany has kindly sent us some other fish dishes to taste as a surprise. Pan Fried Crispy Salmon with sauted garlic vegetables and mild creamy sauce and Sea Brass Teppanyaki with potatoes and veggies. It was a feast of flavors, fragrances and rich tastes.
While waiting, Ms. Rebecca told us about the style of the menu and the dishes, about the Pacific Rim Style dishes. The creative Pacific Rim cuisine with Asian, Hawaiian, Indian and Californian influences, combines fresh products, different cooking methods, a subtle blend of spices, exotic flavors and an enjoyable tasting principle. They have international chefs, from the Philippines, China, Indonesia and also Egypt. Most of the personal are working in Little Buddha Bar from long time, received training by instructors from Paris. The ingredients od the food - for the freshness - are mostly local, but meat and fish for the sushi with other spices are imported. The menu is regularly updated, but always after the approval of the French Management. As for the Bar itself, when I asked about its origins, she told us: “Little Buddha Bar belongs to the George V. Entertainment, where the concept of Buddha Bar was established in 1996. Since then, for over 16 years, it has continued to grow and spread its positive energy throughout the world, with restaurants, hotels, spas, beauty care lines, music… today, it is found in over 25 countries. With different names like the Sanctuary, Siddharta Café, Bushido Bar, Buddha Bar and Little Buddha Bar, we can meet all over the World. In capital cities they established Buddha Bars, while in smaller places – as is

We simply couldn’t manage to choose dessert, sense of full satisfaction, although the Crème Brulee and the Brownie with Caramel Ice-cream was really, really tempting. For those like us, who couldn’t manage to finish up with the dessert, Ms. Rebecca has recommended us to choose a variety of Martini drinks, which we did and was delighted by the surprise. Chocolate Martini and Espresso Martini were our choices and indeed, it was a sweet but light finish of our dinner. Ms. Rebecca told us about the 3 promotions, which are currently running, the – All You Can Eat Sushi for 180 EGP, the – Full Course Set Menu (based all on shrimps) for 200 EGP and the Family Dinner, where for 2 adults and up to 3 children a menu of 3 starters, 6 main courses, 4 desserts ( all the soft drinks

( all prices of the promotion including taxes and service) Sounds like great and affordable experience for everyone – with free entrance for the night club for the dining guests. And so the evening came to the end, but the memories will remain with us. If you are one of those, who want to make your nights memorable by dinner in Sharm el Sheikh, pay a visit to Little Buddha Bar Restaurant, you will not leave disappointed. The restaurant is open for sushi from 2 PM till 4 AM, the main kitchen is open from 4 PM till 1 AM. With lounge music until 11 PM, then resident DJ-s continue with Latin beats and house music. SEAFOOD STUFFED RAVIOLI IN SA F F RO N S AUC E

MIX September 2013
Recipe presented by CHEF MOHAMED MUSTAFA
It’s always seafood season in Sharm el Sheikh. It’s hard to choose between the many delicious ways to prepare it, but the Italian Cuisine is famous about the variety of methods. We visited an expert in this, Chef Mohamed Mustafa in Marriott Beach Resort in Na’ama Bay to ask for something special for you. Chef Mohamed since 20 years working in Sharm el Sheikh, but in between he has travelled the world, as well, to share and learn the perfection of cooking. Participated in developing restaurants, teaching, training and constantly in research of new skills and receipts. He can prepare for us Chinese, Indian, Oriental, and his favorites, Italian and Mexican dishes at the best and made numerous TV shows and interviews. Now we can enjoy his dishes in Parmizzano Restaurant in Marriott Beach Resort, a wonderful Italian a la carte restaurant, where they use homemade pasta, homemade seasoned olive oil sorts and pesto, using their own herbs and spices coming from the hotel’s own gardens and glass house. On our request for a special and delicious Italian receipt of the sea, he gave us of the seafood stuffed Ravioli in Saffron Sauce. Easy to prepare, try it and enjoy. ( for 4 person )
Preparation:
SEAFOOD STUFFED RAVIOLI IN SAFFRON SAUCE INGREDIENTS: FOR THE PASTA DOUGH: • 1 kg Flour • 5 Eggs • 20 gr. Salt • 10 ml Olive oil FOR THE STUFFING: • 200 gr. Shrimps • 200 gr. Seabass Fish Filet
MIX September 2013
• 100 gr. Calamari • 40 gr. Onion • 1 clove Garlic • Olive oil FOR THE SAUCE: • 500 ml Fresh Cream • 3 gr. Saffron • 20 gr. Salt • 10 gr. Butter
Mix the flour with the eggs and salt, then add the olive oil, continue to mix until the dough is finished smooth. Flat it and cut round circles, cca 5 cm of diameter, out of it. Prepare the stuffing, sauté all the ingredients with chopped onion, garlic and olive oil, until all the seafood is cooked. Take the circles of the pasta and put small portions of the stuffing in the middle, then with another empty circle on top, close it by folding the sides. Boil water with salt and add the raviolis to cook for about 8 minutes. In the meantime prepare the sauce, heat a pan with the butter, cream and saffron, when the raviolis are cooked, add them into the pan with the sauce. Seasoning with salt and pepper as you prefer. Enjoy!

NIGHT LIFE
FUN AND STYLE
ON THE WINGS OF MUSIC
D J K A T YA
The sizzling heat of the summer is tamed to pleasant warmth by the night. In the colorful scenery of the nightlife of Sharm el Sheikh, there are a few very popular clubs and bars in the centre of the city, which are still shining with the old patina. Camel Bar and Pacha belong to those. The two place couldn’t be more different, but there is something that connects them. Both have a young, girlish looking and sweet girl, as a resident DJ. I often enjoy her music at one or the other of those places, but personally, I have never met her. Driven by my curiosity, I reached out for her to introduce DJ Katya to the readers of MIX Magazine. Besides her beautiful face and the pitch perfect ear for the pulsing beat, I found her a very simple, flexible and positive person, full of energy, who still believes in the tiny miracles of every day. Originally she is from Central Russia. Her DJ career started as a hobby and while working on a daytime job, in the night she quickly became a celebrated DJ in a local club. Arrived in 2007 to Sharm el Sheikh, as a tourist and one night she played for a while in Camel Bar just for fun. That night has lead her to move to Sharm and give up her former life. She said, she has never regretted this decision of hers. Ever since she sensitively catches the feedback from her guests, who are dancing and enjoying, she always chooses carefully the next song to keep their spirit up.. . She is working with the Ministry of Sound and Hed Kandi since 2010. Through them she started as a resident DJ in Pacha. She is studying the music she plays, for all the new places she starts to work for or maybe for a special event, always considering the nationality of the public visiting, the charts of popularity of those countries to investigate their general taste. Then carefully experiments during her shows. By the research and observation, she leaves little to the unknown. However, she prefers to play what she enjoys as well, from all the music she judges to be suitable. The mixture of all this results in great success. While the two places – Camel Bar and Pacha – are totally different in

style and public, her genius lies in choosing the right notes for the right place and moment. Managing all this with charm and professionality makes her an artist in every sense . I asked about her private life, but she wants to keep that part private Living a quiet life, caring for her reputation, which is not easy to maintain, when someone is a public person like her. “ I respect the rules of the place, where I live, only this way I can demand respect back.” – she said. Her free time she prefers the solitude of the deep sea, diving. Nature is giving her the balance and harmony back after a loud and busy night. She considers herself a very “homey” person, her home -her castle. “I prefer stability, a simple life, a cozy home and the regularity of my work. I love to be a DJ, but I am open to any new, that comes on my way in my profession.” - she said. Outside of her job she doesn’t listen to music to avoid of getting tired of the songs. That way she has as much fun at work, as her guests. On Thursday and Saturday in Camel Bar she plays so called Intelligent Lounge Music. Funky-soul instrumentals from the 80’-90’s, old favorites dressed in new beats, this way every age finds her music-mix pleasant and on Fridays deep soulful funky- house is on the program. DJ Katya collects the oldies and newbies music from the internet and although she has a vast library already to work with, she is constantly on the watch for the suitable beats. “ One day a young man walked up to me, while I was playing in Camel Bar and he said: I love the music you play, but what is more amazing, my mom here with

me loves it all the same.” – she said laughing. – “ It was the greatest compliment I could receive, while exactly this is my goal by work, to entertain all the guests, dancing ,listening or lounging.” In Pacha you can enjoy DJ Katya’s show every Monday. While it’s a dancing club, her music changes, depending on the night’s theme and the expected public. She plays sections as warm-up, dance and chill down. It’s all coordinated and orchestrated for the maximum pleasure. On the MELT Parties every Monday mostly Russian but also other guests are coming, so she feeds a balanced mixture of electric progressive house music as a concept of the night. During the day, before the evening of her work, she prepares her material specially for that night, this allows her to be up to date and ready for any new music to involve. Although it’s a only a few hours of intense work each day, but as she is considering instinct and psychology both to satisfy the expected crowd, she needs the daytime to gather the most

suitable songs for the night. What makes it artwork is the intuitive feeling to be able to keep up the mood all the time, by the right sequences and choices of the songs. “ Everybody can learn to be a DJ, but really good one you only become, when you feel the place, the people, the mood and the music. When you feel how to combine all this, then you are a real artist. “ – she says. When I asked her about her wildest dreams for her future, she simply answered : “ I am a stable person, faithful to the bars and clubs where I am working. It feels like being with a family and I am able to give my all, when I feel comfortable at my job. Of course I dream about traveling the world, and if it will happen by being a DJ, that would be amazing. But there is something special about this city. Sharm keeps me smiling all the time and I am trying to give back to Sharm from this happiness.” DJ Katja.

LIVING
Jeep
Junkies As I roar about town in my semi open, 1984 wrangler jeep, I am often surprised by the incredulous looks on tourists’ faces and daredevil photographers who bravely throw themselves in front of me to capture that snapshot of a woman, usually with dog and daughter driving around in a vehicle that could almost be considered vintage.

LIVING
I am not alone in my eccentric taste in cars, there are many jeep drivers on the roads here in the Sinai. Some mechanics even specialize in jeep repairs, very astute gentlemen I think when I consider how often I require their services. ‘A Jeep needs constant monitoring and attention but if you look after it you’ll have less trouble ahead. A bit like girlfriends.’ So why do so many people living here choose to drive these old cars that drink fuel like a camel after a month long desert trek? If you’re lucky the jeep has some sort of roof and even luckier if you have air-conditioning and it works! My daughter’s friend once enquired why I didn’t have a car stereo. The reality is I can barely hold a conversation with a passenger, let alone here music playing. In fact my husband, a gadget man, thought this was the perfect excuse to invest in Oakley’s with
38
a built in MP3 player. Who wouldn’t want to arrive at their destination reeking of eau de benzine( petrol)? There‘s no need to waste hours discussing hair styles at the salon, a five minute journey on a windy day in my jeep and I have an instant bed-head look. Some owner’s choose a jeep because they couldn’t run one in their home country. ‘After 15 years of boring company cars I wanted something a little unique and with a bit of character’. John, owner of a 1982 Jeep wrangler. With a four litre engine, it is certainly cheaper to run a jeep here where fuel costs less than 2 Le a litre. On a cold day in Sharm, which let’s face it is harldy frosty, my jeep has to be cajoled into starting, so we can safely say she ( yes my car is a girl) wouldn’t not cope with the UK climate. Some would say that to be a true Sharmer especially
MIX September 2013
a male, you should own a jeep. Driving such a huge gas guzzling vehicle that has the potential to off-road must surely indicate how alpha-male, and yet at one with the desert a guy is. If nothing else during this cruel initiation you certainly get to know your way around Rowaset Industrial Park whilst searching for welders, spare parts and mechanics. Joking apart, jeeps must have some endearing qualities. They certainly are solid cars to have on the road. Chad owns a 1996 Cherokee Jeep which he claims has good taxi bashing capabilities. Unfortunately some taxi drivers do have a teenage joy rider approach to driving, which is far less disconcerting when you are in a jeep rather than a small, low and ready to crumple vehicle. If someone hits your jeep, they will probably come of worse while your trusty old tank gets another small battle scar.
MIX September 2013
So do jeeps have any advantages over a saloon car? ‘Yes, people get out of your way. Jeeps don’t break as easily as a saloon car and they are also harder to steal because sometimes even the owners have trouble in getting them started! Jeeps are very simple and easy to work on. The main advantage is that they are great fun’. The decision to purchase a jeep should not be taken lightly, the cost of vehicles is high here and jeeps are no exception, despite their outward appearance, and that is before the regular visits to the garage. ‘Speak to a Jeep owner or two and find out what they have to say about them. You will need to find a decent mechanic and get to know him well. You have to keep a Jeep in good condition. Don’t expect a Jeep to run like a new car, but once you’re over the shock you’ll never want to drive anything else but your very own tank!

SHISHA
THE WATERPIPE EXPERIENCE
When walking around in Sharm el Sheikh, in the cafés, some strange sight of bottles in lines hits the eye. They look like tiny minarets, but when you look closer, you can see people, man and women, sitting together and smoke comes out of those beautifully decorated bottles. This is the famous Shisha, so popular in Egypt.
But what exactly is Shisha? The Shisha is normally a single hosed, often glass-based, water pipe device for smoking. It operates so the smoke from molasses fruit flavored tobacco is cooled by passing though the water. Let’s go and take a look… If you just take a good look around, you will also see many shops selling traditional Shisha pipes. They come in all colors, shapes, and sizes, and if you don’t want to participate in smoking them, then they also make a great home decoration, reminding you of your Sinai holiday. So here we are in the souk, which is the Egyptian word for market. It’s a great place to visit as you can really soak up the Egyptian atmosphere. There are lots of cafes with Shisha, and the area is buzzing with shop keepers selling everything from spices to, you guessed it, Shisha. You can check out the types and prices, for they vary in great deal. Egyptian Shisha pipes are believed to have originated in Persia, primitively made from coconut shells. Their popularity soon spread to Iran and then across the rest of the Arab world. It has different names in different Arab countries, like Hookah, Narghile or Arghile, Qualyan, but the Egyptian name for it is typically, Shisha, which comes from the Persian word shishe, or “glass” , this is the correct literal translation, not bottle. This kind of pipe came to Egypt around 400 years ago and has been a firm favorite ever since. It is rooted so much in the everyday life in Egypt, that famous painters have captured the moments of smoking it in beautiful artworks. The pipe consists of four pieces. The mouthpiece, the top of the pipe, where the tobacco gets packed, the

tube and the body of the pipe, which is filled with water. When you are buying a shisha check that all the parts seal together, and the tube is long and flexible enough. When lighting it, one has to position burning charcoal pieces on top of the tobacco, and the smoke will travel through the water, filtering it, to the tube. You can also buy plastic mouthpieces, which can be changed for hygienic reasons. The Shisha’s ability to produce pleasant, nonirritating smoke has lead many to believe, that Shisha smoking is less detrimental to one’s health, than most other methods of smoking tobacco, such as smoking cigarettes. While in the water pipe the tobacco is heated, not burned, it is not as damaging as the cigarettes and not giving any dependence, if not for the atmosphere and the calm, that comes while smoking a Shisha. People in Egypt gather together in cafes and while sipping tea and talk, they all have their own bottle of pipe. The preparation of the water and the tobacco can be done in many ways, some say ice cubes or lemon slices in the water can enhance the experience, others are changing the cube formed container of tobacco frequently. It is all up to you to try, which appeals for you the best. Shisha tobacco is not your typical tobacco, It is tobacco mixed with molasses and fruit flavors. The most popular flavor is apple, others include strawberry, pineapple, apricot, mint, and even cappuccino! Generally, you will find the staple flavors in traditional coffee shops, but if you feel like trying some of the more exotic flavors, then there are many modern Shisha cafes in downtown Na’ama Bay and most of the hotels. It’s always a peaceful and fragrant atmosphere, where someone is smoking Shisha, belongs to the flare of Egypt’s everyday life. Being part of it can be a unique experience and if you wish, you can buy one for your own and enjoy at home. Just make sure, you are smoking it outdoors, while it makes quiet a lot of fragrant smoke. Of course the typical cup of Egyptian tea is a must, while enjoying Shisha.
