THE WAY OF A PEACEFUL WARRIOR “We practice Aikido, because we have fallen in love with something none of the other martial arts offer” Shoji Nishio By Hedvig Jeney

ACTIVITIES Leaving behind me some lazy days, my body and soul were begging for some activity or a work out. The choices are many in Sharm el Sheikh, if one decides to move. Where do you go when you want to do something which is not only fun but is meaningful and gives more, not only for the muscles, but also for the soul. After some research I found the solution; Aikido. Well I know, just like you do, it is one of the martial arts. I also know it is somehow very different from the others. A friend of mine told me about a dojo opened not long ago in Viva Mall and that everybody is welcome to go and take a look at the classes. Dressed in comfortable clothes and armed with my curiosity I went to check out what exactly Aikido is all about. Mr. Hisham Hafez, the sensei, kindly greeted me when I entered and patiently explained all I wanted to know. Let me share with you what I learned about this unique martial art. He told me that he learned everything in Aikido from his sensei Hamada el Tawil and sensei Marion el Tawil in Dahab in their dojo. He received his black belt there as well. In the near future we will find sensei Hamada and sensei Marion here in Sharm el Sheikh to give us lessons in their knowledge of Aikido. The achievements of his students are internationally acknowledged, and the belts are given after the exams by Aikido masters from all around the world. What is Aikido?Aikido is a modern, nonviolent Japanese martial art that was developed in the earlier part of the last century by the late master, MoriheiUeshiba (1883-1969). Aikido is performed when the defender blends with the motion of the attacker

10

and redirects the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. AI - “to meet”, KI – “the spirit”, DO – “the way”;together they mean that the study of Aikido does not involve merely self-defense techniques, but includes positive character-building ideals which a person can incorporate into his or her own life. It is a practice of an active warrior combat form where the defender joins the movement of the aggressor with his own to gain control and balance. But before you get on the mat you should understand that Aikido is essentially very different from other martial arts like Karate or Taekwondo. The person with whom you train is not an opponent but a training partner who permits you to use his or her body to learn your art, as you do in turn for them.In Aikido there is no “winner” or “loser”, both partners should simply try to learn from the training experience and improve their technique. Dojo Etiquette: The word dojo is a Japanese term which literally means “place of the way”. The dojo is the room where you train and the floor is covered with thick rubber mats called Tatami, which cushions your body when rolling. As you step onto the mat, it is customary to bow towards the far end of the dojo where the portrait of Sensei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, is hanging. You should also bow when you leave the mat at the end of a session to show respect. When the instructor calls the class to attention at the beginning of the session, all the students kneel down in the Seiza position: left big toe crossed over right big toe and hands on thighs. The higher grade students will be nearer the front. You, as a

MIX November 2013

beginner, will be in the back row. The instructor will face the portrait of Sensei Ueshiba and he and the class will bow at the same moment. The instructor will then turn to the class and bow to the class, who return the bow at the same time. If the training session is already in progress, it is customary to wait at the edge of the mat until the sensei beckons you onto the mat. Likewise you should not leave the mat without the sensei’s permission. What should I wear?If you already have a white Gi- Japanese style trousers and jacket - maybe you have already practiced another martial art - by all means wear it.Otherwise any loose fitting clothing, such as training suit bottoms and a T-shirt would be adequate. A sleeveless vest top is not a good idea, as this will mean that your bare shoulders could come into contact with the mat. As you will train barefoot, you should bring some flip-flops or slippers. After giving me anintroduction to this sport, the sensei invited me to be part of the class with the other students. They were all very friendly and supportive. After a short warm-up, we practiced some basic moves. As Aikido is basically a defense sport, the sensei showed us how to turn away from the line of attack, how to move toward and blend in with it. At first we moved very slowly. When he made sure all of us understood the technique, we continued withmore fluid and faster movements, while he constantly explained and corrected each one of us. Then came some rolling techniquesdemonstrating how to get out of an attack situation. Wehave learned so much in the one hour class of sensei H. He explained what weapons are used in Aikido, the long sword, the wooden staff and about the archery. He taught us discipline, the moves and the importance of the joints, especially the wrist: “If you are in control of the opponents grip and wrists, you can control his arms and trigger points so with little but precise effort, you can get away from any dangerous attack.” - sensei H. More than that, he also taught us how Aikido can influence our way of thoughts, self control and self-confidence in life. If you want to know more about his classes, you can find him in the dojo at Viva Mall, located on the ground floor, every Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 4-5pm. Or you may simply call the sensei at 01152666091. As visitors are always welcome, at any age and gender, you may discover that Aikido is not only a sport, it is a way of life. The way of the peaceful warrior.

ACTIVITIES

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME ALL WHAT YOU KNOW … AND YOU DON’T …

By Hedvig Jeney

I think we all agree, that Sharm is a beautiful city. We have the sea, the sun, great night life and so much more. But there is one thing Sharm el Sheikh lacks and that is the cultural life. Or so we think! Little we notice, but we do have something very interesting right under the eye; The Culturama in Soho Square. We all know more or less about the ancient and modern history of this great country, Egypt, but I think wecan always widen our knowledge,so I decided to visit Culturama. I was promised, by the information collected about it, a journey through time in Egypt, starting from the ancientPharaonic erathrough history, all the way to our modern times. By entering, I was thinking of just getting a nice history lesson, but what awaited me during the show was far above my imagination. At first impression, the hall of Culturama is familiar and strange at the same time. It looks like a cinema, but the screen is all around the seats. That woke my curiosity; maybe it will really be something different or something new. I met with Mr. HanyKhallef, Marketing Analyst of Soho Square, who told me about this strange theater. CULTURAMA or Cultural Panorama is an innovative

16

harmonized mix of a wealth of cultural and natural heritage information, informative and attractive multimedia program and the latest display technology. By the introduction, I discovered that it has been developed by the Egyptian Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT). In front of the seats, which can accommodate 90 persons, there is a huge 180 degrees panoramic interactive computer screen with a diameter of 10 meters, which consists of nine separate flat screens arranged in a semicircular shape and nine video projectors controlled by a single computer.CULTNATin cooperation with the Library of Alexandria has developed an interactivemultimedia software to control the display on this panoramic screen. The journey through time by Culturama starts at 3000 BC, with a simple timeline explanation, an easy way to understand for everyone, how history unfolded. From all the vast era of thePharaonic times, they picked a few very well known personalities, like Khufu, the pyramid builder, with the explanation of his pyramid, a very interesting mathematical papyrus (4000 BC) in details, to show how precise their knowledge was, the botanical gardens of Thutmosis

MIX November 2013

III, the beautiful temple of Hatshepsut, the queen pharaoh, the famous Ramses II in Karnak and his descendent Ramses III, all the way to the last of the Pharaos, Cleopatra VII. Watching the wide screen and the images made in 180 degree, made me virtually feel to be there at the given places of the historical sites, while a very pleasant female voice was gently telling me the stories, many which I already knew, but also other interesting facts, I have never heard about before. I am sure any of us can discover knowledge here in an easy and entertaining way. The second part is about the history of Islamic and Coptic architecture, picking the most interesting and beautiful sights all around Egypt from 600 AD till today. The Mosque of AmrIbn al-As, the Nilometer, the Monastery of St. Anthony and the interesting monastery of Abu Men, the Mosque of Mohamed Ali. The explanation of these sites, in an easy and understandable way, with the sight of the places all around me, left me wide-eyed. There are many other facts and images I saw and truly exciting facts, which I can’t explain to you here, but I’m sure you’ll find it out for yourself, when you

MIX November 2013

go and visit Culturama. At last the show offers a general view of the two major cities in Egypt, Cairo and Alexandria, showing and telling us about the highlights, if you have never been in these cities, you can have a general informative picture of how they look like, what is worth to visit and why. Culturama is showing you images, not a moving film, which is different from other cinemas, but also leaves you time to understand and marvel about all the places and facts the narration is telling you. The show is not too long, but not too short either, I couldn’t believe that 40 minutes were passing by, while I watched the performance. They are open every day in the evening, the shows are in 4 different languages as shown. The minimum age to attend is 9 years, smaller children will find the program maybe too long to sit. The price for a ticket is 35 LE, which also includes a soft drink. There is a possibility to organize timing forlarger groups to see the show, for the price of 20 LE per person, anytime agreed and suitable for the guests. All you have to do is to call the hotline of Soho Square, 01000 109 109. For a group of your friends or maybe schools it’s an alternative and interesting program to visit.

DINING

DINING WITH THE FLYING KNIVES “Domo arigato” - “Our thanks” (for the show of culinary delights) By Hedvig Jeney

MIX November 2013

There are times, when either on a special occasion or simply for the pleasure of it, we crave for something extraordinary. Exotic food is not hard to find in Sharm el Sheikh; we can really have the choice of the plenty. While talking with my friends, we opted for an authentic Japanese experience and decided; we’ll give Teppanyaki a chance. Very few people view Japanese food as comfort food and we were searching for a great spot to eat an exotic meal in a peaceful setting. The Teppanyaki Restaurant on Soho Square is offering both, so off we went to give it a try. In order to arrive to the restaurant we needed to find our way through a labyrinth, we had to ascend on the side of the British Bar, “The Queen Vic”, then the kind personnelsimply showed us to the entrance of the Teppanyaki Restaurant, which is situated right next to the Sushi Bar. I must say, the search was well worthy. The restaurant boasts a tasteful interior, featuring dark wood furniture and decoration; large squared lamps are giving a tuned general light to the guests. Cleverly illuminated tiny indoor Japanese gardens with bamboo and stones are hiding in the corners. The chefs and the waiters are dressed in muted Japanese-inspired garb, with kerchiefs covering their heads. Chopsticks are the vogue, but forks are available upon request. What is Teppanyaki? It is a Japanesestyle cuisine, where the word “teppan” means iron plate or griddle and “yaki” is for grill or broil. In this restaurant the teppanyaki counters are the real deal, as are the chefs working there. They chop and mix and fry their way expertly around the hot surface. All this happens right in front of the guests. There are two action-packed (yet immaculate) grills in this restaurant, where you can watch these Japanese chefs at work. They are well known for both their cooking and the show they put on, well trained in the art of knives and utensils for the performance. Most of us, when we think about Japanese food, immediately sushi pops into our mind, but here sushi isn’t on

MIX November 2013

the menu; instead, there are meats, seafood, rice vegetables and much more . The cooking shows in theteppanyaki restaurants are always spectacular and we had the chance to enjoy one fully here. The preparation of the dishes involves a lot of sounds and humorous comments. Knives are flying, metal utensils are giving a basic rhythm, sauces pouring, steam rising and an occasional flame outburst from a flambé might make the show spectacular. While in this cuisine ingredients are many, besides the meat or seafood, thespices and vegetables are playing an important role, sauces and oils are included, and there is plenty of space for the chef to give to the guests a virtuous show. The restaurant ensures the freshest ingredients for its dishes and as they werebrought out raw, we could see that they were all top quality. The beef teppanyaki was really an eye opener. Tender portions of beef were grilled to perfection. The fried rice was nicely done, with plenty of expertly prepared greens and vegetables intermingled. All the while the chef was cooking we were chatting with him and with each other. Time has passed so quickly and almost without noticing it, we had our meal perfectly portioned, for each of us, on our plates. This was in-your-face, Japanese-style flat iron teppanyaki cooking experience – we were so close to the action that it felt like we could lose a finger. Totally interactive absolute theatre and awesome food. The food prepared by the chef was tasty, plenty and prepared with skill. The Teppanyaki Restaurant on Soho enriches the Sharm el Sheikh dining scene by offering an authentic Japanese experience — complete with grilled treats and authentic drinks, a nice show and much more. Perhaps the Teppanyaki Restaurant’s excellence will inspire some for a “Let’s go out for Japanese”, that does not presume sushi as its centerpiece. Those who have traveled to Japan, or who are Japanese themselves, rave about the authenticity of this place. And folks who haven’t yet traveled to Japan enjoy the novelty of the flavor combinations.

NIGHT LIFE

Modern times - modern music. When it comes to nightlife and entertainment in Sharm el Sheikh, mostly we hear the modern style music, which is house and trance. Luckily, with a little investigation, we can have other choices, too. All the more … live music. We have many artists to choose from, it’s really a hard choice, but as far, as we would like to give our readers a general picture on the music scene, let’s take a round around in Sharm el Sheikh’s nightlife. AROUND THE WORLD ON THE NOTES HISHAM HAFEZ Hisham seems to be one of the favorites of the Sharmers. In his 19 year career he has built up quiet a following, while he covers such a wide range of music in his 3 hour non-stop, one-man-show. That makes him quiet unique on the music scene in Sharm el Sheikh. He sings World Music All Style, from the 60’s till today, in English, Spanish, Italian and a few Turkish and French songs. You can hear from him Frank Sinatra, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Bon Jovi, Dire Straits, Oasis, the Doors, Nevada, Guns and Roses and so much more, but classic rock style is his favorite. Just last night I saw him performing with his “Bongos” in Naama Bay, in The Lounge, where he actually plays on Wednesdays and Fridays from 22:30 till dawn. It was a delight to watch the audience smile, as they swayed to the music and also sang along with him. Some even couldn’t sit down for long, they had to dance. He always has an open mic option for those, who are brave enough.

30

“I try to give back the tunes of the original songs, when I work, I feel the atmosphere of the place, the people and by my choice of the songs, I am able to change the mood of the audience.” – he said. He is also at Hotel Sunrise Grand Select Arabian Beach on Tuesdays and Fridays from 19:00 till 22:00. It really was an enjoyable evening for all ages and I am looking forward to see him to perform next week. ON THE WINGS OF SOUL MUSIC KAREN LENIHAN Karen sings mostly all kinds of music, but we can call her the local queen of swing, soul and reggae.Even when she chooses a song from Frank Sinatra, she sings it in her own style. Her voice is perfect (and so is her passion)for singers like Ami Winehouse and Adele. The way she performs the song: ”Someone like you” from Adele, soon became her signature tune in Sharm el Sheikh. If you feel like an evening listening to Motown and Soul Classics, you need to look for the places, where you’ll find Karen’s show. Karen is resident singer in The Tavern, every Sunday from 8:30pm till 11:00pm. She will be performing one night at Little Buddha Bar in the near future, in Naama Bay, as well. She is probably one of the most versatile artists known here in Sharm el Sheikh, she will do just about any request asked of her and enjoys a challenge. What makes her style unique is her interpretation of the songs in a soulful way, definitely someone to see and hear, if you are looking for a different style of night entertainment.

CREATIVITY MIXED WITH THE BEAT JOLEENE EVANS Joleenecame to Sharm el Sheikh from London and conquers the public ever since she arrived. She is very well known internationally as a vocalist, singing together with the music provided by DJ’s in the clubs, which makes her style quiet outstanding. Her song “Let’s dance” with Dj/producer ChadashCort reached top 20 in Holland charts and “Follow the beat” is 12th, still rising. She also composes and writes music. During her shows she often picks her own creations and improvisations to entertain her fans. She has a strong, yet slightly husky and sweet voice at the same time. Joleene is very versatile with her music, her passion for music and singing really can capture you and soon you’ll find yourself hypnotized by her performance. If you want to catch Joleene singing LIVE, she is performing in Little Buddha Bar in Naama Bay, every Saturday and Wednesday from 8:00pm, where she will please your ears with songs old and new. ALL THAT JAZZ HISHAM TIBA Tiba is a MUST see soon! He is the resident Performer at Hyatt Regency Stars Bar, located on Peace road, near Naama Bay. He is famous for his Jazz from A-Z, modern/or classic, playson piano, acoustic and electric guitar, pan flute and regular flute, (no horns, though) he prefers the strings and the piano. He uses 3 different guitars; the first is the curious, so called “silent guitar” playing soft sounds for music like Hawaiian guitar pieces and chill out music. The second is the electric, 7 stringed guitar invented by

MIX November 2013

Eric Clapton, it’s not an easy guitar to play on, while it has a very high note. The third is the acoustic guitar, well known to everyone. He is most famous for his jazz performances, he is able to richly improvise and give the old songs a brand new jazzy sound .He plays music by the likes of Dave Grusen, Take 5, Candy Dulfer ( “Pick up the pieces”), Carl Clue,AldiMeola, Chick Corea, Pablo Di Lucia, Bob James and my favorite George Benson. You will find him performing almost every evening except Wednesday and Saturdays from 10pm till late and he has no set schedule to follow, as he prefers to go with the flow, follows his feelings and requests, that his particular audience would enjoy the most. Therefore a guaranteed perfect evening is promised! Tiba is also a music composer for documentaries, worked for such as the National Geographic Channel, this profession and experience allows him to perform in his own style with his heart and soul. If you want to hear an authentic or a brilliant new version of an old favorite, then Tiba is your man to listen to and enjoy indeed. We gave you a few examples for styles of entertainment in the Sharm night life, but there has to be mentioned many others like Ashraf Ziada with wonderful flamenco music, the karaoke evenings in many bars and clubs, where everyone can try their skills and passion, there are salsa courses all around the town and so on. One has to have a keen ear for hints and information and soon the music scene in Sharm el Sheikh becomes very colorful and soundful.

ANCIENT PROTECTION THROUGH TIME Amulets from the Past By Hedvig Jeney

Strange signs and forms are appearing in every step we take in Sharm el Sheikh. Paintings on walls, written on papyruses and even in the jewelry shops,we all know the meaning of some of them, while others we are just used to see, but what exactly they symbolize has been lost in time. Didn’t you ever wonder about them? What do they mean? Well, they were all used for protection and power, but our modern life has turned them into simple decorative elements. Today, if you walk around in the jewelry shops in Sharm, you can find pendants, rings or bracelets still bearing these symbols, made of precious metals and semiprecious stones. When you are thinking of a gift to someone you love, why don’t we pay respect to the ancients and give something meaningful as a present that had so much meaning through time. Let me introduce to you some of the symbols and amulets. You can easily find and buy them for yourself or as a precious gift for someone dear. They are beautiful jewelry pieces with an immense history and meaning, everybody would be happy to receive any of them, especially when the purpose is described precisely and attached to the gift. ANKH In ancient Egypt, the Ankh sign represented eternal life. The origin of this sign is much debated, but everybody agrees, that it was a powerful protective symbol to the ancient Egyptians. Today, this sign is regarded as a symbol of long life, health and good luck. DJED The Djed is acknowledged by all historians as one of the oldest symbol of Osiris, depicting his backbone and so represents strength and stability. Wearing a Djed pendant may bring the bearer stamina and strength when needed. ISIS KNOT The knot of Isis, according to the Book of the Dead of the ancient Egyptians gives the protection of Isis and her son Horus to whoever wears it. Typically made out of Carnelian, it symbolized blood, magic and power from the magical goddess herself. Its power resonates also when in any other form, for example in gold or silver. Protection and strength are

surrounding the one, who wears this pendant. SCARAB The scarab pendant represents the powers of creativity and re-creation, which brings matter to life and the evolution of the soul. In ancient Egypt, the scarab was regarded as a symbol of resurrection. Today, it is widely used for good luck and giving renewal and strength to the one who is tired. To ancient Egyptians the Scarab was a powerful amulet of the Sun god, embodying the force that pushed the sun through the sky (as real scarabs push dung balls along the ground) and therefore represented the power of the life force and the mystical cycle of rebirth. It symbolizes the power to create and is worn to draw courage and protection. WEDJAT EYE Mythology tells us, that Horus lost one of his eyes in his battle with evil, it was restored to him, believed that he sees every one of us and since the beginnings of the Egyptian history it became a symbol of protection for the ancient Egyptians. After this battle, Horus was chosen to be the ruler of the world of the living. As an amulet, the eye of Horus symbolized wholeness and good health. WINGED GODDESS ISIS The Egyptian Goddess Isis is believed to have held the secret of magical arts and among other things this pendant is worn for the love of the Ancient Mother, for to increase magical intuition, healing and love. LOTUS FLOWER The Lotus Flower was connected with resurrection and rebirth. This is because at night this flower would close-up and go under the water, but would be reborn by opening up again with the first rays of the sun. The ancients believed that it also has detoxification affects. The plant itself is hard to find in the modern times, only in the Egyptian Museum garden and some areas of the Oasis of Fayum. With little attention, while browsing around in the jewelry shops in Sharm, we can find any of these symbols as pendants, rings or bracelets. A great gift idea for everyone, while paying respect to the thousands of generations of Ancient Egyptians, who firmly believed in their powers.
