Sharm Sunset Cruise

by Neil Pillail

T

he Fantazia Dinner Cruise leavesNa’ama jetty at 5.30 every night. The whole affair is mostly aimed at couples, with a romantic ambience, but it is family friendly too. Whilst waiting at the jetty, guests are entertained by a very engaging African show. It’s fun, light and relaxing, just the sort of thing you want to lead you into a sunset over the Sinai, viewed from the Red Sea, so we won’t pick on the point that Sinai is in Asia Minor as opposed to the rest of Egypt being in continental Africa. The guests themselves seemed blissfully unaware as they enjoyed the rhythmic dance and soaked up the atmosphere. The performers encourage audience participation, without being too pushy, and people seem happy and willing to join in. It helps the laid back atmospherethat you don’t have to go through any dramas about passports or ID’s, since all this is sorted out before you join the boat. Boarding is a really smooth process. 10

Once on the water, there is a full cabaret schedule. There are two singers, Tamer Seif and Ania, as well as two belly dancers, Carmen and Mayada. I suppose the magicianwants to maintain an air of mystery by not giving his name, but still, he is really entertaining and fun. The whole feel of the cruise is generated by the acts getting the audience involved, and cheesy as it may sound, it really works. Between acts, there is a DJ to fill the space with appropriate disco beats. No hard house or drum and base, but somethingyou’ll be able to move to, if you are so inclined. There is a point in the cruise where they stop and make a fuss over people’s birthdays(after all, it has to be someone’s). That could be a nice surprise for your significant other, or friend, or whatever. Even a hard bitten old cynic like me(who considers it nothing more than another day closer todeath) would be gratified. It’s still kind of nice when someone makes a fuss about your birthday. MIX October 2014

The food is a standard hotel-style seafood buffet. There is no alcohol served on board and let’s face it, that’s for the greater good. If you’ve ever been stuck on a boat with drunk people, it’s an experience you’ll never want to repeat. All food and drink is included in the price of a ticket, which is a very reasonable, about the same as you’d spend in a standard restaurant. The view of Sharm from the water reminds you how beautiful this place is. You get a good view of the lights of Na’ama, and the big Mosque and the Coptic Church are clearly visible, both very eye-catching landmarks against the backdrop of the mountains. All in all, this is an excursion for those wishing to do something a bit different than the standard night out at a restaurant. If you’re in the mood for some light entertainment and a fun night out with a partner, friends or family, this could fit the bill.

Unique Eats in a burger bun By Moira Tune

Hamburger definition: a flat round cake of minced beef that is fried or grilled and typically served in a bread roll; a hamburger. We all love a nice juicy hamburger and Sharm is just the place to indulge that temptation, but as Sharm is unique and a little bit different from the rest of Egypt, so are our burgers. Here is the lowdown on the most unique burgers in Sharm el Sheikh, just waiting for you to sink your teeth into.

Little Buddha Restaurant and Lounge This fashionable lounge bar, restaurant and club is famous for its fusion food and sushi, and not necessarily burgers. Well think again, as Little Buddha also loves burgers and has promoted the basic bun and meat combo up to the giddy heights of fine dining by added a sophisticated twist. These Buddha burgers are burgers in bow ties and completely worthy of this favourite fusion venue. For traditionalist choose the “Little Buddha home-made Mini Beef Burgers”. They may look bite sized but even with a man sized appetite it is quite a task to finish three of these little gems. Yes, they maybe mini but you get three of them. A small pure beef patty, grilled to perfection served in a mini golden baked roll with a slice of tomato and lettuce. The burgers are served with a small side salad, coleslaw, mayo, ketchup and a side of your choice of fries, mash or vegetables. The presentation is spot on for fine dining and they almost look to cute to bite into – but alas it just had to be done. Little Buddha is renowned for creating exceptionally good fine fusion food with an emphasis on fresh fish, so it is no surprise that they have come up with a meat alternative for the burger bun. If you fancy something fishy and don’t want sushi why not try the “Mini Crab Burger served with spicy coleslaw with a Thai twist”. For a very reasonable price you get two medium mini burger buns filled with plump patties of crab mixed with spices, 18

mayo and mash. These crab cakes are light and fluffy on the inside with a golden crunch on the outside. Each bun has a slavering of piquant cocktail sauce and comes with a little dish of Thai inspired coleslaw and extra sauce for dipping. This dish definitely deserves to be on the unique list of Sharm’s most different burgers. Little Buddha Bar allows you to indulge in the simple delight of a burger in a sophisticated setting with exceptional service. After dinner why not continue to the upper floor and try one of the many creative cocktails and then get down to the beats of the resident DJs.

Camel Dive Club and Hotel This delicious burger has to be one of the most famous bun and meat combos in town. It has been featured in the international press and in the UK’s Monarch flight blog, it’s almost achieved the accolade of being on the list of top things to do whilst on holiday in Sharm and that’s on a list with SCUBA diving Ras Mohamed, climbing St. Katherine’s, racing at Ghibli and dancing at Pacha. So if there is one thing not to miss eating in Sharm it has to be the Camel burger, as apart from being one of the best burgers in town it also gets a raise from the folks back home. The Camel Burger is available in the Camel Bar, Pomodoro Restaurant and in the Camel Dive Club courtyard after 3pm. This tasty treat is not made out of ground camel meat as the name jokingly implies. It is made from pure 100% ground beef and a closely guarded secret special seasoning mix. Camel’s Chefs tout it as a ‘melt in your mouth, juicy, salty and tender masterpiece’ so it just had to be tested. MIX October 2014

The burger is an impressive huge and hearty patty served open on a toasted sesame bun with all the traditional condiments, a choice of extra cheese, mushroom sauce and/or egg and a side serving of English style chips. This is the perfect hungry mans or woman treat, especially after a day of diving. True to its word it is deliciously juicy and tender. I especially like the slice of pickled cucumber which for me just complimented the flavor and that it is served open so you can easily add sauce and/or remove salad items. The burger is served with raw onion slices, sliced tomato and lettuce. If you choose to assemble it complete - It’s a handful like any good burger should be but it is a delight to bite into and get messy with. Alternatively you can dive into it as an open sandwich with a fork and knife. The Camel Burger with its famous name and its top taste definitely deserves a place on Sharm’s best unique burger list and also not to steal the limelight but those English style chips are well worth a mention too for their delicious crispyness.

Pirates Bar – Hilton Fayrouz

Bus Stop Restaurant, Bar & Lounge in Nabq

GAD

Nabq Bay the resort area just north of Sharm’s International airport boosts a plethora of brand burger joints; there’s the famous flame grilled, the Friday place and of course the renowned rockers café, but this article is about unique places and their burger creations. Bus Stop has a range of home-made burgers but the highlight with a delicious difference has to be the Hawaiian Burger. If you are feeling a little fruity and like to hula hula then the Hawaiian is the way to go; it is a 200gm pure beef home-made patty, topped with pineapple and finished off with grilled cheese served in a freshly toasted bun. This salt & sweet combo is bursting with juicy flavor and is served with home style French. Another notable burger has to be the Deluxe – 200gms of 100% ‘melt in your mouth’ prime American Beef Fillet, topped with crispy bacon and cheese served with home-style French fries and a side salad. This has to be one of the most luxurious bites of burger in town.

MIX October 2014

Some time ago the ever popular Pirates Bar at the Hilton Fayrouz decided on a re-vamp of their pub menu and along with other popular items came up with the idea of the ‘Texas Giant Burger’ a pure beef 500g mother of all burgers. A small typing error on the printed menu gave this mega burger the giant reputation of the impossibly large 500kg burger. This unique quirk and completely unimaginable status stayed on the menu for a while, but alas it has now gone and has turned into the ‘Pirates Huge Burger’ a double sized version of a normal burger served with hot BBQ sauce in a sesame burger bun. It is still one of the best in town and you can’t beat the friendly staff and service of the Pirates team. You can also enjoy their ‘Chicago’ Burger a chicken burger served with cheddar cheese and beef bacon with a side of coleslaw and potato wedges, or their Robinson Beef Burger topped with cheese and beef bacon and served with French fries.

Although most of our featured burgers are on the list of Sharm’s most unique burgers for their taste and quality, we also have to add Gad’s offering for uniqueness which is its price. Gad is not an International giant chain with so much cash that it can dominate the burger market with inexpensive mass produced meals, it is in fact a small Sharm chain of two branches offering an exceptionally large choice of dishes at super cheap prices. Feeding the masses and being Sharm’s No.1 choice of cheap eats is no mean feat, especially when you see the ridiculously low prices of under 5EGP for most sandwiches. The Gad burger comes with choices, you can have just a ‘burger sandwich’ or ‘burger with eggs’ or ‘cheese burger with eggs’ and possibly more options like additional pickles, beans, salad etc. all for as little as 20 Egyptian pounds. I have been told it is tasty, meaty and well worth the pennies spent, as it fills a gap for far less than the big name brands and is probably better quality.

Ingredients For the Sauce: 150 gr fresh tuna 1 garlic clove 1 teaspoon of oregano 2 tablespoon of black olives without seeds 1 teaspoon of fresh parsley 1 teaspoon of chopped cappers 2 fresh tomatoes 1 pinch of hot pepper powder For the pasta: 200 gr flour 1 glass of water 1 pinch of salt

MIX October 2014

Method of preparation: Warm the olive oil in a pan and fry the chopped garlic, parsley, oregano, cappers ( if you wish also the hot pepper ), then add the tuna cut in cubes and salt. Stir it well, add the ½ cup of water and cook it covered for about 5-7 minutes. After that, add the olives cut in slices and the chopped fresh tomatoes and cook it for another 2 minutes. For the preparation of the pasta, place the flour and the salt in a bowl and by slowly adding the water work it with your hand into a soft but compact dough. Take it out of the bowl on a flat surface and cut it into 4 parts. Form each part into a long snake-like long line and cut them into cca 1,5-2 cm pieces. Now with your 2 fingers push into the middle of each piece creating a small hollow. It’s important for the dish, while this way the pasta will carry the sauce while serving. Cook the pasta in salty water, then pass it in the pan with the sauce for about 2 minutes.

NIGHT LIFE

Top

clubbing nights

with one of Sharm’s hottest DJs by Hedvig Jeney

MIX October 2014

I

f you are a committed clubber you would have heard the underground gossip about the new regular parties hosted by one of Sharm’s most well-known DJs. Yes they are happening and they are hot and most importantly not to be missed. So who is this music maestro, who is blasting the crowd with high-octane tracks, maintaining a faster tempo than usual? His name is DJ Top Alex and he is attracting a friendly crowd who clearly converge for no other reason than to dance. Watch one of his sets and you’ll see the dance crowd devour every twist and turn DJ Top Alex takes them on. Being a bit of a clubber myself, I decided to track down this DJ who manages to move the

party crowd in a never ending line of events and find out more. DJ Top Alex is a guy with his mind on music, success and constant development – definitely a DJ to watch. He started spinning at the age of 15 and had his first DJ job during the summer season in Alexandria. After only one year he was ready to leave his hometown and head to Dahab to entertain a more international clubber crowd. Gaining DJ experience in Dahab, he entered an on-line DJ competition in 2010 and ended up being 39th in the Middle East, following this achievement he started to be interviewed on T.V and have several articles written about his young success. In 2011 he moved to Sharm to continue his journey with his special

style of exuberate night life entertainment. To catch the spin action of DJ Top Alex, you can find him at Little Buddha where he is currently one of the resident DJs. From the moment he goes on to the mixer, Little Buddha becomes a full blown party venue. He plays EDM (Electric Dance Music), Progressive and Techno house and also some Deep House beats. With a fast hand on the control board, he effortlessly mixes different genres of music, giving the dancing mob the right mood to party on until dusk meets dawn. He is a maestro at mixing and has the talent to improvise the mix, reading the crowd but also being aware of the club’s business interests. A DJ dream for any night life venue.

NIGHT LIFE wants to produce more studio music, targeting media productions and movies. This year is the 10th anniversary of his music career and at the pinnacle of this decade he has signed with Californian companies WMA Electronic and Connection Digital Recording as well as with Baccara Music for the Ibiza Pool albums. On top of all of this he also has a sound and light equipment company called ‘Soundscratched’. Being one of the youngest DJ’s in Egypt – this is an amazing success story. “Why exactly DJ TopAlex is your name?” – I asked –“ Does it have a special meaning?

DJ Top Alex is for any wannabe DJ someone to “ look up to. He learnt everything by himself; though sheer determination, self-study and now experience he has become one of Sharm’s leading DJs. It is not just about spinning the decks, he also taught himself to use ABletonLive a computer program for producing. One of many of his achievements is working on his own tracks with his producer Mustafa Wassem. In just over three years he has produced over 30 tracks in the genres; Chill House, Progressive and Deep House. He has managed to achieve the heady status of going viral with one of his tracks ‘Milky Way, Ibiza Pool’ which has hit the international scene. You can listen to his chill house music series called ‘Deep on the Roof and Over the Sky’ on his website www.djtoalex.com or www.soundcloud.com/djtopalex. His tracks are also on i-tunes, Amazon and Beatport. When asked about his future plans, DJ Top Alex knows exactly where he wants to be. At the beginning of his career; he made his goal to be the resident DJ of a well-known club by the age of 24 – he achieved it by becoming the resident of Little Buddha the sister of the famed Buddha Bar in Paris. He has set another goal and in two years he 28

“When I started my career I was still a kid and therefore shorter than the other DJs. Top means ‘short person’ in Arabic, in Dahab my fans tagged ‘Alex’ to it, as I’m originally from Alexandria.” When asked about his career and journey into the music scene he says “My family didn’t approve of my decision to leave my studies and follow my dream to become a DJ. However they soon saw that in reality I never stopped studying, just in a different direction, towards music. By the time my first T.V interview was aired, they realized that my choice was right for me. I have simply educated myself into my dream.” DJ Top Alex is a modest and humble man, who wants to continue to grow, discovering and experimenting with music in his own unique style. If you haven’t experienced a night of his sublime spinning, his wonderfully diverse and high energy performance then make sure you go to Little Buddha. Dance the night away to top tunes in a sophisticated environment – Little Buddha with DJ Top Alex is the place to go. Visit his website or fanpage to find out when is playing next.

LIVING

Back To School?

by Neil Pillai

“Well, it is the biggest and oldest language teaching facility in the Sinai Peninsula, registered by the Ministry of Education”

38

The summer holidays are over; in a flash for the kids and teachers, and after an eternity for the parents, and/ or anyone working in the service industries (Einstein was really on to something with that relativity business). Perhaps it’s time for the rest of us to consider going back to school too, considering what’s available locally.

because I had the directions, “Behind Delta Sharm”. Not very helpful, as several hotels and apartment complexes, and the sea are also behind Delta Sharm, so let me save you some aggravation and be more specific. If you’re travelling from Old Market to Na’ama Bay on Peace Rd, The right hand turn after the Pyramid Hospital, running down the side of Delta, is Zoo St. Follow ILCC, more popularly known it all the way, crossing City as Compusharm, is located on Council St. in the process, and Zoo St, opposite Tower Country ILCC is on the right, just after Club. I couldn’t find it the first the old Coca Cola store. time I looked for it, probably

MIX October 2014

That’s the location out of the way, so why bother finding it in the first place? Well, it is the biggest and oldest language teaching facility in the Sinai Peninsula, registered by the Ministry of Education. That means it’s a proper school, not just a company. They’ve been in business for over sixteen years, and teach Arabic, French, Russian, Italian, Polish, German, Spanish and yes, even English, as well as some handy little computer courses. The first thing that struck me is how affordable the courses are, compared to my native England. Prices vary from course to course, so if you’re curious, call the office on 010 000 73028, and ask about the one you’re interested in. Put it this way, a private Arabic course costs less than half of what I paid in a group, even with a special discount at the cheapest place I could find in London, and is way better.

Group courses work out more economically, but it’s best to get together with some friends to this, as there can be delays whilst waiting for minimum quotas to be filled. There are so many reasons to take up a course. It’s a great way to stimulate your mind, in an environment where we can so easily fall into a rut. Perhaps your partner speaks a different language, so it could be a nice surprise for them if you made the effort to understand them. It could also be a surprise for you to find out what they’re really saying. Those of us who’ve lived here for a bit don’t really have an excuse for not speaking more Arabic. My Italian and Russian friends have often put me to shame by speaking and understanding more than I do. Of course, if you work in anything to do with tourism, another language is

invaluable. For example, most dive centres are really eager to find teachers who can cater to their multinational clientelle. Camel used to send certain of their staff there to learn Arabic in busier times. As for computer skills, I guarantee that this provides the best opportunity for you to find a course in Excel or Access at a fraction of the cost of your native country. Finally, if you are a parent, what better way to set an example for your children? At last you can shut them up when they moan about homework, or how hard school is. That’s pure gold on it’s own. ILCC are happy to answer your queries. The office opens from10:00 am to midnight (sometimes later). Perhaps it’s time to take up a new challenge and expand your horizons.

SHOPPING

Grab a gadget by Moira Tune veryone whether male or female, young or old or cool or square just loves a good gadget – that big or little something that you just have to have as it could quite possible save your life. Sharm is actually quite well equipped with shops packed full of must have items. I went on the hunt for gadgets big and small, gimmicky yet useful, geeky and freaky and now I also have a wish list. What’s on your wish list? Here is some inspiration.

There are also tonnes of GoPro accessories to buy – the most popular ‘must-have’ is the LCD Touch Screen which is compatible with Hero3+ & Hero3 and has limited compatibility with Hero2 and the original HD Hero. With this little add-on gadget, you get to see what fish you are filming.

The ultimate 2in1 gadget has to be the Liquid Image Digital Camera Mask which takes photos and videos whilst in the water. The snorkeling version is guaranteed to 5m dept and is 3.1 mega pixel and the Diving camera/mask combo in a rather fetching black is 12 mega pixel and guaranteed up to 40m. For Fitness freaks and for those who want to track everything going on in their bodies every minute of the day and night there are the latest bands. These gadgets probably full into the ‘could possibly save my life’ category as they monitor your heart-rate, steps taken, calorie in-take, calorie burn and even sleep-cycle. For Apple lovers there is the UP by Jawbone and for Android the Smartband. Back in the 80’s everyone who thought they were cool carried a hefty ‘Boom Box’ around on their shoulders – now if you want to annoy the public with your tunes you can do it with a thumb sized, palm of your hand gadget. They come in all shapes and sizes but a particularly gimmicking one was the Gas Station 6600 designed like a ‘Benzine’ can – which during these days is not a bad accessory and a real ‘could save my life’ accessory. All of these gadgets and many more similar gadgets can be found in iMedia open from 12.00 midday – 12.00 midnight in the Forum building, Zoo Street opposite Delta.
