EXTRACTS FROM THE HOLY QUR’AN

Thee alone do we worship and Thee alone do we implore for help. [Holy Qur’an, 2:187] This means the believers say that they only worship, praise and pray to Allah and nobody else. It also says that we only ask Allah for help and nothing else. So everyday we should make sure that we ask Allah for whatever we need and focus on him with great attention.

SAYINGS OF THE HOLY PROPHETsa Abu Juhaim Ibn al-Harith Ibn al-Simmahra relates that the Holy Prophetsa said: “If a person who passes in front of one engaged in Prayer realised the enormity of it, he would wait for forty, rather than pass in front. The narrator was not sure whether the Holy Prophetsa said forty days or months or years”. (Bukhari & Muslim) This means that that if a person is praying to Allah with full concentration and attention you should not walk or run in front of him because it might distract him from his interaction with Allah which the Holy Prophetsa says is a very bad thing to do as you should allow people to concentrate when they are praying.

WRITINGS OF THE PROMISED MESSIAHas A prayer in which the heart is at one place, while the thoughts are somewhere else, and the mouth says something, is a curse, which is thrown back in the face of man, and is not accepted. (Malfuzat, Vol.5, pp.44-45) This means that when we pray to Allah we should not just do the actions and not concentrate on thinking about Allah. We should focus on Allah with our body and mind which means that all our thoughts need to be on Allah otherwise our prayers won’t be accepted and just doing the actions or movements is worthless.

FROM HADHRAT KHALIFATUL MASIH Vaba TO YOU “And every one has a goal which dominates him; vie, then, with one another in good works. Wherever you will be, Allah will bring you all together. Surely, Allah has the power to do all that He wills.” (Holy Qur’an, 2:149) In this verse, Allah Almighty has emphasised on a commandment for all believers, which is absolutely essential for the progress of every individual in gaining nearness to God and makes a Muslim a true Muslim.

Every human being on this planet has a goal, and he continues to make every effort to achieve it. This is true even for those who have ill intentions of causing harm to others, although the results of their objectives yield nothing but evil consequences, for example, a thief spends most of his day planning his thefts, etc.

“Every human being on “and makes a Muslim this planet has a goal” a true Muslim.”

The same commandment is also absolutely necessary for the communal progress of a Jama’at. This commandment relates to the goal that is set out in the verse i.e. Vie with one another in good deeds.

Many others make terrorism and barbarism their goal, for which they spend money, time and many other resources. They brainwash innocent children over long periods of time and use them for the vain purpose of killing innocent people through suicide attacks, etc.

Unfortunately, most of these people call themselves Muslims and commit these heinous crimes against humanity in the name of religion and cause conflict and corruption in the world, giving a bad name to the beautiful teachings of Islam.

This is the only way to safeguard that the community as a whole will move forward and progress.

Islam on the contrary teaches nothing but spreading goodness and sets the goal to a high standard of vying with one another in good deeds.

The Holy Prophetsa was sent as a mercy for all of mankind. The Jama’at that was founded by the most loyal and devoted servants of the Holy Prophetsa is associated with this principle which entails the fulfilment of obligations towards The Creator through worship and includes the responsibilities towards our fellow human beings through service to mankind.

“Islam on the contrary teaches nothing but goodness.” The word “wajhatun”, which is the root word for “goal” used in this verse recited at the onset of the sermon means direction, course, effort, paths, ways, means to attain an objective. Not only does a Momin direct himself on the course that is set forth by God Almighty, he must choose the right path in that direction in order to attain that objective which is to progress in the path of goodness. What that means is that one must set himself upon that path towards those good deeds, implement them and progress in them and at the same time, he must also be wary of those companions who are left behind due to their weaknesses and make every effort to ensure their progress as well.

“One must set himself upon the path towards those good deeds”

Service to mankind can be achieved by performing righteous acts and propagating compassion. [Extract from the Sermon by Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba on the 9th of November 2012. Read the full Sermon at www.alislam.org]

OPPOSITION AGAINST THE PROPHET OF ISLAMsa Recently the world has witnessed a few individuals and groups trying to disgrace the blessed life and personality of our beloved sa Prophet Muhammad . This has been done through the internet where many lies and false stories have being made up by them.

“many lies and false stories have been made up by them.” However, this opposition is nothing new as all previous Prophets including Abrahamas, Mosesas and Jesusas faced persecution and lies being made up about them whilst they were alive and for centuries after. This is because all Prophets have a divine message from Allah to deliver to the people.

As you may be aware, a short film has recently been produced about the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa as well as disgraceful cartoons being published in the newspapers about him which are full of lies. Many Muslims and non-Muslims have reacted to both the film and cartoons saying that they are full of hatred and deceit and the producers should be punished.

“they are full of hatred and deceit” Therefore, as Ahmadi Muslims and followers of Khilafat we need to listen and act upon the instructions of Huzuraba regarding these sorts of attacks on Islam.

AFFAIRS

4

Huzuraba has discussed this particular topic in his sermon on the 21st of September 2012 and spoke directly to all Ahmadi Muslims, saying: “The rudeness and insults by these people does not affect the honour of the Prophetsa at all. He was a Prophetsa on whom God and His angels invoke blessings and salutations. It is for the believers to constantly engage in doing the same and when the enemy exceeds in offensiveness, invoke blessings and salutations more than ever by praying to Allah: “O Allah, bless Muhammadsa and the people of Muhammadsa, as You blessed Ibrahimas and the people of Ibrahimas. You are indeed the Praiseworthy, the Glorious. O Allah, prosper Muhammadsa and the people of Muhammadsa, as You did prosper Ibrahimas and the people of Ibrahimas. You are the Praiseworthy, the Glorious.” So we shoud be contantly invoking this prayer on our beloved Prophetsa. Through our prayers we will create a good change in ourselves which will be a proof of the beautiful teachings given by the Holy Prophetsa to the rest of the world. The proof of the Prophet Muhammadsa is already apparent in the success of the Jama’at over the past 100 years

but as individuals we should represent the Prophet of Islamsa in the 21st Century through our thoughts, words and actions. Doing violent or non-violent protests will not help the situation as many Muslims are engaing in across the world which is barbaric and pointless (see images above). Therefore our response to these people will be one of patience, steadfastness and prayer.

“Doing violent or non-violent protests will not help the situation” All success is with the people of Allah and they cannot be harmed or disgraced by anyone in this world as Allah Himself protects their honour and followers.

ARTICLES FROM ATFAL ACROSS THE UK LOVE FOR THE HOLY QUR’AN Qur’an sab say acha, Qur’an sab say piyara, Qur’an Dil ki Qooat, Qur’an haay sahara.

THE NEED FOR CONSTANT PRAYER People have been praying to God in one form or another since the beginning of mankind.

Today I will speak about reading the Holy Qur’an daily. The Holy Qur’an is the Holy book of Islam. It was revealed to the Holy Prophetsa by the angel Gabrielas.

“Then Adam learnt from his Lord certain words of prayer.” [Holy Qur’an, 2:38]

The Holy Qur’an was revealed over a period of 23 years. It has 30 parts and 114 chapters. The Holy Qur’an purifies one’s soul and makes a Muslim righteous (almutaqin). The Holy Qur’an lays great importance on offering prayers five times a day and offering Tahajjud and other Nafl prayers too. The Promised Messiahas had a great likeness for the Holy Qur’an. As Ahmadi children we too should also make reading of the Holy Qur’an part of our daily lives and act upon its teachings. By Muqarab Bhatti Age: 9 Region: Baitul Futuh

This is a practice which has come across the mind of almost every living person. So there must be an innate human need to worship, praise and interact with God. “O ye men worship your Lord Who created you and those before you” [Holy Qur’an, 2:22] This need is usually amplified when a person is in distress or pain and has nobody to turn to. “....seek help with patience and prayer; surely, Allah is with the steadfast.” [Holy Qur’an, 2:154] By Zergham Din Age: 14 Region: East

ATFAL AUTHORS THE LIFE OF MUHAMMADsa The Holy Prophet Muhammadsa was born in Mecca at 570 A.D. His father Abdullah had died before his birth. When he was 6 years old his mother Amina also died.

When he was 25 years old he got married with a lady called Khadijara who was a rich women and her age was 40 years old. In Muhammad’ssa young age, he was known among his people as “The Trusty” and “The True”. He always treated his neighbours with extreme kindness. He distributed money to the poor. Actually he was “RAHMATUL LIL ALAMEEN” for the whole universe. He was not happy with the people because they believed in idols. Then he went to cave Hira to worship Allah. He used to stay there many times with some food and drinks like dates and milk. One day an angel named Jibraiel came to him and told him to recite (read). Then Muhammadsa answered “I can’t read or write.” The angel repeated himself three times. Then he taught The Holy Prophetsa the first few verses of the holy Qur’an, which had an important meaning.

6

Then he was commanded to stand up and spread the name of the one GOD, the creator of the world with no partner. When The Holy Prophetsa received the message of Allah, He was full of fear of having this big responsibility of being the Holy Prophetsa and the messenger of Allah. At that time he was 40 years old. When he started to spread the message of Allah, not many people believed in him because it was only the beginning. His enemies (people who don’t believe in him) annoyed The Holy Prophetsa and his believers a lot. 13 years later, he had to leave his city, Mecca and went to Medina. He lived there for 10 years to spread the message of Islam. When all the people in Saudi Arabia got the message of Allah, Islam and The Qur’an was completed. At the age of 63, The Prophetsa passed away in Medina and was buried there. By Talal Adnan Age: 9 Region: South

FRUIT IN ISLAM

7

FRUIT IN ISLAM: THE FIG Surah Al-Tin (Holy Qur’an, 95:1) in the Holy Qur’an states: ‘[I swear] by the fig and the olive’ The reference to the fig in the first verse of Surah at-Tin is a great sign of the importance and the benefits offered by this fruit. The common fig is a tree which is native to the Middle East, which normally grows to lengths of about six meters.

The common fig tree grows mostly in dry and sunny areas, with deep and fresh soil. The plant can handle droughts and is suited to the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean climates. The fruit itself has an orifice, or a hole, known as an ostiole, which allows the fig wasp to enter the fruit and pollinate the flower.

“normally grows to the lengths Figs are small and juicy fruits, with a chewy texture and a very sweet smell. of about six meters.”

The edible fig fruit from these trees is one of the first fruits ever grown by humans. For the ancient Egyptians, the fig was such an important food that as a defence, Egyptian armies would cut down the figs and vines of their enemies. Today, figs of the species Ficus carica are of worldwide importance.

Believed to be the favourite fruit of the Queen Cleopatra, figs hold a valuable place in many cultures around the world. Romans as a

figs God.

THE FIG

The fruit is now widely popular across the world and it is produced mostly in Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, India, USA, South America as well as the Middle East and Mediterranean. There are many benefits of eating figs. The rich potassium content of figs helps to maintain the blood pressure of the body. Even leaves of the fig plant have healing properties. Eating fig leaves helps diabetic patients reduce the amount of insulin intake.

8

The fig has both health and medicinal values, and it is even said that humans could live on figs alone. Such is the nutritional value in the fruit! The fig has a very high status as a food in Islam and therefore should be included as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

“The fig has a very high status as a food in Islam” “O you people! Eat of what is on earth, lawful and good...” (Holy Qur’an, 2:172)

“Even the leaves of the fig have healing properties.” The As well as the mention of the fig tree in the Qur’an, it has also been mentioned in the book of Genesis in the Bible. Adamas and Eve used fig leaves to cover themselves after eating the fruit of the ‘forbidden tree’. Since then the fig leaf has symbolised modesty or a kind of shield. The Holy Prophetsa also mentioned the benefits of the fig fruit. Sahih Al-Bukhari records Prophet sa Muhammad saying: “If I had to mention a fruit that descended from paradise, I would say eat from these fruits for they prevent [stomach problems] and help gout.”

importance of healthy eating is shown by the mention of fruits in the Qur’an, and Allah has clearly directed us towards eating these foods in order to lead healthy lives. May Allah allow us to continue to do this and pass these values on to future generations. Ameen. BY DANNY LONE

A DAY IN THE LIFE

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A JAMIA STUDENT Exclusive interview with Qaasid Ahmad Describe a typical day in Jamia. Students get up early in the morning to offer the Tahajjud prayers and then offer the Fajr prayer. Then we recite the Holy Qur’an and can go to sleep if time permits us.

till 11pm. After that the lights are switched off and we go to sleep. At what age did you enrol at Jamia and how long is the study period?

I entered Jamia at the age of 16 in 2006 and understood that At 8am we have the I would leave as a 23 year old. assembly and from then on we are At that time it seemed a relatively long taught seven lessons in the class period to cover (seven years) and I room and they all last until 2pm. was always worried about it’s length. OF A JAMIA STUDENT

What range of subjects do you cover in the syllabus? In Jamia we are taught the Holy Qur’an, Ahadith, English, Urdu, Arabic, Comparative Religions, Fiqah, the beliefs of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at, how to present arguments and how to gain further nearness to Allah. But there are many subjects which we are expected to cover ourselves and are not anywhere written down, e.g. obedience. This is a subject which, to be honest, I’ve experienced most and is the most necessary. It’s more than just an action. It’s an art of discipline. What aspects of your work do you enjoy the most and why? The best part of what I do is the fact that above all our teachers, the person whose classes I have learnt from the most, and my favourite teacher of all, is our Khalifa.

10

“Every day three students come to meet me for Mulaqa’at. And the purpose was so that a personal relationship be formed and that they may be guided”. What qualities are required to be successful as a Jamia student? Sincerity. It is a very one must be sincere and depend on Him fulfil the purpose of

basic word but to his Creator throughout to being created.

Then one must be utterly sincere to Huzuraba because it is in his hands that we have laid our lives. One must always keep in mind that we are the property of the Jama’at and whatever we do we represent the Jama’ at. So we need to watch our actions and words because we are being judged by those who want to learn about the Ahmadiyya Community and it’s leaders.

Although we have not received lessons from Huzuraba in a class room but the interaction we have with Hudhur is unique and something which we never ever thought we’d receive. In fact Huzuraba mentioned in the convocation (graduation) ceremony when the first class of students graduated from Jamia last year,

FESTIVALS

13

FESTIVALS: CHRISTMAS Christmas is the most famous of all global festivals, religious and nonreligious. It occurs each year on December 25th and it is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christas. When Christianity spread in the Roman empire they started to celebrate the birth of Jesusas in December instead of celebrating the pagan festival Saturnalia.

“it is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christas.” Therefore, many believe that Jesusas was born on the 25th of December.

However, Christian and many other scholars know that he was not born on the 25th of December.

“he was not born on the 25th of December.” The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336AD in the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine (he was the first Christian Roman Emperor). Some believe that Jesusas was born fully twenty years before the current accepted date but nobody knows the exact date that he was born!

CHRISTMAS

However, in the 21st Century Christmas is not even celebrated as a religious festival by the majority of Christians and is seen as time for socialising, over eating and giving presents to each other.

“seen as a time for socialising, over eating and giving presents” The concept of celebrating the life and birth of Jesusas as the main purpose of the festival has not been passed through the generations and Christmas is now just a public holiday like any other. Even commercial businesses have understood that the Christmas period has gone far away from religion and is only about gift giving so they make sure that during the end of December everything is on sale because so many people are buying gifts for their families.

“Christmas is now just a public holiday like any other.” This has also led to many people spending huge amounts of money over the Christmas period which they can’t afford. They end up spending huge amounts of money because of the pressure society has put on them to be extravagant and indulgent on Christmas day and the few days leading up to it.

14

Therefore, as Ahmadi Muslims we should make sure that when we celebrate Eid every year we do it for the right reasons and put emphasis on becoming closer to God, helping the needy, praying, strengthening family relationships and not on giving presents or having feasts. Eid ul Adha just passed and we all took benefit from that day but the main purpose of the Eid ul Adha was to reflect upon the willingness of Prophet Abrahamas to sacrifice his young son Prophet Ishmaelas as an act of submission to God’s command and his son’s acceptance to being sacrificed, before God intervened and stopped him.

“as an act of submission to God’s command.” Therefore, we should use Eid to try and develop ourselves to have that level of obedience and love for our parents that Prophet Ishmaelas had towards his father. We should also have the same devotion to God which meant Prophet Abrahamas and as Ishmael would happily give up everything for the pleasure of God. BY QASEEM AHMED HAYAT

A CUT ABOVE THE REST

15

A CUT ABOVE THE REST: IBN BATTUTA Allah has said in the Holy Qur’an: ‘Say, ‘Travel in the earth, and see how He originated the creation.’ (Holy Qur’an, 29:21) Ibn Battuta is considered one of the greatest travellers of all time. It is estimated that Battuta travelled in excess of 75,000 miles, visiting 44 countries! This feat was only surpassed 450 years later.

In a period of 29 years, he visited most of the known Islamic world as well as many non-Muslim lands including trips to Africa, Europe, Middle East and Asia. He endured wars, shipwrecks and rebellions. The life of Mohammed Ibn Battuta is an example of how one man’s love for Allah’s beautiful and boundless world led him to a journey of discovery and exploration.

“He endured wars, shipwrecks and rebellions.”

He travelled further than Christopher Columbus and Marco Polo and The Independent newspaper named him the 4th greatest traveller of all time.

Ibn Battuta neither travelled for personal wealth nor for territorial expansion, but rather to study Islam around the world and learn about various cultures.

“named him the 4th greatest traveller of all time.”

Muhammad Ibn Battuta was born in the year 1304 CE in the coastal city of Tangier, Morocco.

IBN BATTUTA

His parents were wealthy Muslim scholars. As a young boy, Ibn Battuta studied religious law. Battuta decided to go to do Hajj, even though back in that time, many people didn’t travel much. There were no planes, large ships, cars and trains to transport them. Mecca is 3,000 miles away from Tangier and the journey would have taken over a year! However, he wasn’t fazed and in 1325, at the tender age of 21, he set forth, alone. His immense courage and determination is inspiring and the fact that he was willing to travel 3,000 miles alone and at 21 is a great achievement in itself.

“His immense courage and determination is inspiring.” Ibn Battuta explored the Middle East, before returning to Mecca. Battuta sailed south along the eastern coast of Africa, returned north before continuing on to the Persian Gulf and reaching Mecca to perform his third Hajj. In 1349, Battuta returned home to Tangier, Morrocco. He left Morocco at the age of 21 and returned at the age of 45, a 24 year adventure!

16

He settled in the city of Fez. The sultan found Ibn Battuta’s travel stories entertaining and asked that the stories be written down. Ibn Battuta told his many adventures to a writer, who turned the events into a travel book; ‘Rihla’ (The Journey).

“He endured wars, shipwrecks and rebellions.” How Ibn Battuta spent the remaining years of his life is unknown. He died in Fez around 1369. His unmarked grave can be seen there today. The fact that Ibn Battuta travelled over 75,000 miles and returned safe is remarkable. Men can do amazing things when they sacrifice their lives for the love of God and his creation. Ibn Battuta showed how one man can travel futher than any man in history experiencing so many wonderful things along his epic journey. BY MUSSAVER AHMEDI

ETIQUETTES OF THE MOSQUE Let’s go on a journey in your mind....Imagine that you are sitting quietly in your classroom at school, studying your textbook carefully. Everyone in class is also sitting with their heads down, looking at their workbooks. Sudddenly! jumps up

A from

boy chair!

He is laughing and running around the room. What goes through your mind? You are a good Ahmadi child, the best of all children. Don’t you feel embarrassed for that boy? It’s weird to see someone messing around when they should be doing something serious and important.

Well, now imagine that you are back in your classroom but instead of your teacher, Allah is there. Allah is asking you to do something important for a few minutes. Now what is going through your mind? Can you feel how important Allah is? Try and build a picture of Allah in your mind where He is very important to you. What is it that Allah is asking you to do for a few minutes?

“Try and build a picture of Allah in your mind” Have a think, see what you can come up with before reading on. Allah is your best friend. This is what He tells you, and wants you to know. What is a best friend? Think about it now...

THE MOSQUE

A best friend is someone who wants to help you in everything, and make you happy, and help you to enjoy yourself. This is what Allah wants to do for you. The Mosque is one place that is specially made for you to do only one thing. To become better friends with Allah. All the other people are there for that reason. So when you come to the mosque you should help yourself and help others to achieve this. The way that you can help them is by remembering certain important things: When you arrive at the mosque recite the following prayer: “Bismillah hisalato wassalamo ala rasoolAllahe Allahumaghfirlee dhunoobi waftahli abwaba rahmatika” Try not to discuss random things at the mosque, wait until you leave. You should never start talking even about good things near where a praying person can hear you. If somebody is praying, you shouldn’t pass directly in front of him, where he is going to put his head - of course you can do so if you pass a little away from the place of his prostration. The mosque must always be kept clean, it is your duty to keep an eye out for any dirt or rubbish and to pick it up.

18

Keeping the mosque clean includes the toilets and wash areas, and outside. You should not eat anything that gives bad smell, before going to the mosque; your mouth odour will be very disturbing to others.

“Keeping the Mosque clean includes the toilets” Try and brush your teeth if you have just eaten something. You should not spit inside the mosque or on its stairs. You shouldn’t really spit at all anywhere ever. When you leave the mosque, you should pray in the following words: “Bismillah hisalato wassalamo ala rasoolAllahe Allahumaghfirlee dhunoobi waftahli abwaba fazlika” BY DR TAYYIB HAYAT MAA SECRETARY TARBIYYAT UK
