Editorial: Opening Thought s the sun sets on Jalsa Salana 2002 in the UK, all of us are left with memories of a successful gathering which witnessed around 20,000 people from across the World descend upon Islamabad in the midst of the English countryside. It seems to many that the whole event passed by in blink of an eye. Months of planning, negotiation, discussion and preparation came together on that last weekend in July. People from all walks of life, from all backgrounds, from all parts of the globe came together for this gathering of the faithful." The sheer logistics" commented one guest "are absolutely incredible". Indeed, if one considers the departments which are involved, the manpower, the requirements which need to be taken into consideration, these comments are not mere observation, but in fact a statement of the reality of this blessed event. During a hospitality period which stretches well beyond the three days of the Jalsa, guests from all over the world were registered, accommodated, transported and provided with meals and refreshments. For those travelling shorter distances from within the UK, again if they required accommodation or transport this was provided, or if they chose to travel to the Jalsa themselves parking arrangements were made available to them. This year's Jalsa also took on a new dimension as coupled with the blessing of MTA, motorists within the vicinity of Islamabad suddenly found themselves being able to tune into Jalsa FM, a breakthrough into the world of radio communications for the UK Jama'at. Of course the highlight for all remained the comforting and blessed presence of our revered Imam Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IV, Hazur being amongst us a was a source of great inspiration and comfort to the thousands present and millions watching through the miracle that is MTA International. May Allah protect our beloved Hazur and bless him with health and happiness. Amen Looking back there are many stories one can recount of this event which remain fresh in our minds; amusing tales of incidents that occurred, to the spiritual awakening people felt during the International Bai'at. People who we met for the first time at the Jalsa as mere acquaintances, have parted as cherished friends. How truly blessed we are - as the ones who are recipients of the divine blessings of the Jalsa. How truly blessed we are to belong to community, which despite differences of culture, language and background, unites us all under one banner and one leader. We are indeed the fortunate ones to belong to a community which provides through its organisation and its structure opportunities of spiritual and community development unrivaled anywhere else in the World. It was over hundred years ago that the foundation of the blessed Jalsa was laid by Hazrat Promised Messiah a time when the Reformer of the Age reminded us all that "This Jalsa must not be treated like any other ordinary gatherings. This is an affair that been based on the succour of God." "The major aim of the gathering is that sincere members of the Jama'at should be able to derive religious benefits and at the same time they should enquire more knowledge and advance in their God realisation. One advantage is that meeting their friends will broaden their circle of brotherhood and it will strengthen mutual ties" (Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad)

Message: Sadr Sahib id Mubarik. I hope and pray that you and your family are in the best of health. May Allah always protect you and bless all your efforts. Ameen. In November last year, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih (atba) graciously appointed Ibrahim Noonan Sahib as Missionary In-Charge for Ireland. Hazur (atba) also appointed myself as Sadr, Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK. Ibrahim Noonan Sahib had been Sadr, Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya for four years and moves on to an even greater challenge. A passionate Daeen-e-Allah,blessed with the power of presenting his side of any argument, a fitness fanatic, and a humble personality were the essence of Ibrahim Sahib, and he now takes these qualities to Ireland and will be sorely missed by all. Pray that Allah enables us to fulfill our responsibilities with loyalty and dedication, and that we do justice to the roles entrusted to us. Ameen. Alhamdolillah, Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK has achieved a lot and we must always continue to build upon our previous achievements. We are honored and blessed by the presence of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih (atba). As such, each one of us has an additional responsibility to lead by example and continue to work that much harder to succeed in our objectives. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Waqf-e-Jadid Scheme. As you would have heard in Hazurs' Friday Sermon on Friday the 3rd of January, the United Kingdom retained its third position throughout the world. Approximately 1500 Khuddam and Atfal participated in the scheme. Financial sacrifice for the sake of Allah is one of the highest forms of sacrifice that an individual can make. This applies not only to schemes such as Tahrik-e-Jadid, Waqf-e-Jadid, the Baitul Futuh Mosque Fund, or Chanda Aam, but also to your Khuddam and Atfal Chanda. Allah has assured us that even a single penny sacrificed by a Muslim is recorded against his name and a reward assured for the individual both in this world and the next. Alhamdolillah, Khuddamul Ahmadiyya have always been at the forefront of any scheme. However at the same time we should always ensure that our Khuddam Chanda subscription is up to date and paid at the correct rate. My initial focus for the coming months is on two things, strengthening your local Qiadats and ensuring that all Khuddam become regular in their five daily prayers. I am involved at a much greater level with

E

each and every single Qaid to ensure that the national plans are being implemented. The Qaideen at the same time have been given a much greater autonomy to implement programmes locally. Please give your utmost support to your Qaid, as he will need a lot of help from you to implement his plans. One of the most important things being done in the next couple of months is the distribution of the Atfal and Khuddam Syllabus to all of the Khuddam and Atfal in the UK. As a first step, the first volume of the Urdu Waqf-e-Nau Syllabus is being printed in this edition of the Tariq Magazine. The other volumes and the English edition will be published shortly. Khuddam will also receive a copy of books to read every month from their Qaid and additional topics for research. The second, and more important focus is on the importance of reading your five daily prayers regularly. At the last Ijtema we did a survey of approximately 750 Khuddam and more than 40% of the Khuddam surveyed indicated that they are not regular in their five daily prayers. It is worrying that a little less than half the Khuddam are not performing their Sala’at regularly. I would like to implore all of you to at the very least try and be regular in your daily prayers. Always be mindful of this most important of requirements for a Muslim. By the time you receive this edition of the Tariq magazine, many of your Qiadats would have held their local Ijtema's. The local and regional Ijtema's culminate in the National Ijtema and you need to start preparing now for participation in the National Ijtema. Please try your utmost to attend these events. Remember that I am always available for all of you if you ever need to contact me for anything. I am present in the Khuddam Office in Baitul Futuh every evening after 8.30pm. You can contact me either at the Khuddam Office in the evening or on my mobile number which is 07966 144379. I am extremely honored and humbled that I have been given this responsibility. Inshallah, by working together we can grow on the excellent achievements of the past to ensure that Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK continue to set the pace for others in all respects. Please remember me in your prayers, and more importantly continue to pray for the health and well being of our beloved Imam, Hadhrat Ameerul Momineen, may Allah bless him and protect him from all harm. Ameen. Mirza Fakhar Ahmad Sadr, Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK

Tarbiyyat article: The objective of our lives

the

OBJECTIVE

lives of our

You are the best people raised for the good of mankind; you enjoin good and forbid evil and believe in Allah.

(Al-Imran, v111) s Muslims, it is required of us that when we read a verse of the Holy Qur’an or when we hear a verse of the Holy Qur’an that we listen to it with concentration. Allah tells us in the Holy Qur’an ‘And when the Qur’an is recited, give ear to it and keep silence, that you may be shown mercy.’(7:205) Therefore, we should take the time to ponder over the Holy words of God Almighty and try to understand the message that is being portrayed. In this short verse in Chapter Al-Imran of the Holy Qur’an, God says to the believing Muslims YOU are the best people, which means the best of all those that live in this world, better than those that have passed before and better than those to come. You are the best people. Now, if we look at the word best, what does it mean? Let us first analyse the word in worldly terms. If we take sport as an example and look at the best sportsmen, the best footballers, the best cricketers or the best golfers etc. what do we see in those people? We see that they are the most highly skilled at what they do and so they considered to be the best. They are rewarded considerably for their efforts and therefore very highly paid. They are well known by everyone, famous among people who may not even follow that particular sport. Many thousands of people want to copy, be like and attain the same level of skills as those people. The same qualities can be seen when we look at this from the angle of a professional, say for example a doctor or a surgeon. The

A

best surgeons are the most highly paid, well known and respected. Anyone who needs and can afford their services want to be treated by them. Other junior surgeons learn from them and have a wish to attain a similar level of expertise. In the examples given, the title of ‘the

upon month practicing his skills, increasing his fitness and endurance. He sacrifices his time with his family and friends in order to achieve his objective. He sacrifices his wealth on the things that are needed for him to reach his goals e.g. equipment, membership of a gym, special dietary needs etc. He pushes his body to the limit of exhaustion. The same can be said for the surgeon, who spends year after year with his head buried in medical books studying hard and learning to perform operations while his peers enjoy that time in other recreational activities. When so much sacrifice and dedication is needed to attain success in these pursuits, how can we expect to attain a status given by God Almighty without equal or more effort? To be the best in the sight of Allah requires total submission, dedication, commitment and sacrifice. Only when this recipe is complete can we even think about attaining our goal. After ‘You are the best people,’ the verse continues by saying ‘raised for the good of mankind.’ Not only for the good of yourselves, not only for the good of your immediate families or your Muslim brothers and sisters but for the good of mankind. This means all of mankind and includes the community or society you live in and indeed

‘And when the Qur’an is recited, give ear to it and keep silence, that you may be shown mercy.’(7:205) best’ is given to these people according to our own accepted standards. In this verse of the Holy Qur’an,God Almighty,The Supreme Being, Lord of all the Worlds is Himself telling us that you are the best people. When a Muslim hears this verse he should feel a hefty burden on his shoulders. He should be filled with humility and the fear of Allah and should start to think about how he can maintain this high status given by Allah. He should be concerned about what steps he should take in order to live up to the standard of being the best. To be the best at anything requires much effort. You cannot expect to be the best footballer by just walking on a pitch without any effort and playing. You have to have the desire to be the best, total dedication is needed and one has to make many sacrifices. A footballer spends day upon day, month

the whole world regardless of race, colour or religion. The question may arise in one’s mind, after reading this sentence that how would it be possible for a person living in the UK to do any good to someone living on the other side of the world. The beauty of the Holy Qur’an is that it has a meaning for everyone regardless of capacity, level of intellect or status. Some people may only have the capacity to reach out to their immediate family members or members of their social circle. Others have more capacity and can reach out to a larger number of people within an organisation, city or country. The next question that may arise in one’s mind is that if one is raised for the good of mankind how does one go about achieving this objective? continued on page 11

Spiritual Jewels: Holy Qur’an, Ahadith & writings of the Promised Messiah

THE HOLY QUR’AN Believers are only those whose hearts are smitten with awe when Allah's name is mentioned and whose faith is strengthened when His signs are recited to them, and who put their trust in their Lord (8:3-5) AHADITH (TRADITION) Sayings of the Holy Prophetsa Ibn Abbas relates that Holy Prophet said:

I was shown many peoples. I saw a Prophet who had only a small party with him, some Prophets had only one or two persons with them and some did not have even one. Then suddenly I sighted a huge assemblage and I imagined that they were my people, but I was told: This is Moses and his people, but lift your eyes to the horizon. I looked and beheld a great multitude. Then I was told: Now look to the other horizon; and their was a great multitude. I was told: These are your people and of them there are seventy thousand who shall enter Paradise without any accounting or suffering. Then the Holy Prophet stood up and went into his chamber and the company began to speculate about those who would enter Paradise without any accounting and suffering. Some said: It may be they are the ones who kept company with the Holy Prophet; others said: It may be they are the ones who have been born Muslims and have never associated anyone with Allah; and so forth. Then the Holy Prophet came out and asked:What are you discussing? So they told him. He said: They are those who do not make charms or amulets nor seek them, nor seek omens but trust in their Lord. On this Ukasha ibn Muhsin stood up and begged: Supplicate Allah that He makes me one of them. The Holy Prophet said: You are one of them. Then another stood up and begged the same. The Holy Prophet answered: Ukasha has forestalled you. (Bukhari and Muslim) PLEASURE IN TRUST The condition of my heart is wonderful. Just as when it is very hot and the wind does not blow at all, then the people very confidently hope that now it would rain; when I find my money box empty and I have very great confidene in the grace of God, that the money box will be filled up (with money) it really happens like that. I swear by God that when my pocket is empty, I find great and ecstatic pleasure in my reliance on God; I cannot adequately express myself to explain that condition of my heart. In fact that condition is a source of great consolation and it gives comfort and contentment much more than the time when my pocket is full. When my father and my brother were involved in court cases and that used to keep them worried, they always envied me and thought of me as a very lucky person who had no worries at all. (Malfoozat Vol 1.p.312)

TRUST IN GOD (12th June 1912) Hadrat Khalifatul Masih I Translated: BaarakzaI had a nephew whose name was Shahsawar. I started for Jammu and took him along with me. But I had no money for the journey. I thought that I should borrow some money from my wife, but did not like the idea. We were both going on horses and when we went outside the city, a man came and gave me one rupee and some batashay (sugar candy). Another presented me a half a rupee. After going three or four kose (about seven miles) when we reached near a village named Awan, my nephew asked me permission to make some sherbet at the well for drinking as it was very hot and we had batashay with us. The boy returned after going not very far and asked me to come along with him to the village. When we reached the village well, the boy wanted to b ring out his container to make sherbet. Seeing this, the owner of the well asked us to wait for a while. When I asked him why he was asking us to wait, he said that Lumberdar (headman) of the village had seen us coming and had gone home to bring some milk for us. After some time, the Lumberdar came and presented me a rupee. Some time ago, his son had come to me for treatment and he had recovered. When we got up to resume our journey, the Lumberdar asked me to wait for some more time. We waited and after a few minutes the mulla of the village mosque came and presented me a rupee. As he was a poor man, I did not like to take the money from him. By the time several villagers had come to see me. When I returned the money to the mulla, people asked me to keep that money and should not return it. When I asked the reason, they told me that he was sick for last many days and he requested medicine from me from

I

Jammu, which I had mailed to him. With that medicine he got well. The people asked him,“You requested for the medicine, which you got free. You did not even offer any thanks. To this he said, “If Nuruddin will come to our village, I shall give him a rupee. The People said that he never gives anything to anyone. Today by chance he has been hooked, therefore, I must take money from him. This was something strange that I had never gone to that village while it was only four and a half miles from our town. In future also I never visited that village. Now I had three and a half rupees. When I reached the railway station, I thought that I should show the young man the city of Lahore. Fare up to Lahore for two persons was three rupees. I bought the tickets and we reached Lahore. Now I had only eight annas (half a rupee) in my pocket. When we came out of the station, a coachman asked us to take the coach. I told him that we wanted to go to the house of Sheikh Raheem Bakhsh in Anarkali. What will he charge us? He said that he would charge not less than a rupee. I told him that I had only eight annas, and if he agreed we would go with him. He smiled and took the money and we reached the house of Sheikh Raheem Bakhsh. After a few days, when we returned, Sheikh Sahib sent for his coach for me and whispered in my ear not to give any tip to his servant. When I reached the station, I had no money in my pocket and was confident that we shall travel by the same train. I was positive about my belief of our journey. While I was standing there, the booking office opened, the tickets were sold, and the office closed. The train came and passengers went into their compartments; the gate to enter the platform was also closed. The engine whistled for departure but I was still sure of going by that very train.

When the train was just to start, I saw a man who was shouting,“Nuruddin, Nuruddin” and went pretty far. The train started but stopped after going a few yards. When the man returned, he saw me an d rushed to the booking office and brought three tickets, one for himself and two for us. He brought along with him a policeman also and got the gate opened for us and we three boarded the train, which started immediately. The man said that he wanted a prescription from me. I wrote the prescription and started looking at the tickets and the destination and their fare. He promptly said that he will accept no money from me. So I kept quiet. The tickets were up to Wazirabad where we intended to go. After getting the prescription, he got down at the next station i.e. Shahdara. When we reached Wazirabad, I told Shahswar to go through the city on the other end and I shall be coming right after him. Those were the days when there was no railway train from Wazirabad to Jammu. On my way I met a man who said that his mother was sick and I should go with him and see her. I told him that I was in a hurry to leave. But he said that his brother was with him, who will go to the yakka (a horse drawn carriage) stand and hire a yakka for me. In the meantime, I may see her mother. So I examined his mother and wrote a prescription. When I left him, he put some money in my pocket, which I counted before reaching the yakka stand. They were ten rupees. When I reached the yakka stand, I found that his brother and the coachman were haggling over the fare for Jammu. The yakka driver demanded ten rupees and he wanted to pay less. When I reached there, I told them that there was no need to haggle, ten rupees are quite reasonable.

will be permitted to go to waste.” And “You are the last people raised by God so do such deeds of piety as touch the loftiest standards of excellence.” (Kashti Nuh: Roohani Khizain vol.19,p.17)

continued from page 9 The same verse continues and provides us with the answer. ‘You enjoin good and forbid evil.’ By carrying out this simple yet profound instruction, not only does the best person continue to spread good but also plays an active role in the removal of all that is evil. It is with great sadness that one sees people in the world who do the opposite. They enjoin evil and forbid good.It is horrifying to see those who inflict their evil terror on other people and attribute their wickedness to the b eautiful teachings of Islam. Those people could not be further from the truth. So how do we know what is good and what is evil? The Holy Qur’an tells us ‘And He revealed to it, the ways of evil and the ways of righteousness,’ (91:9) meaning that God has fixed in man’s very nature a sense or feeling of what is good and what is bad in the form of a conscience. With every word you utter and every action you take there is a voice in your head that tells you whether it is right or wrong. In order to be the best people raised for the good of mankind and in order to enjoin good and forbid evil, our every action and word must be a reflection of righteousness. Lastly the verse says, ‘and you believe in Allah.’ Because it is the belief in Allah that will lead you to follow the divine instructions of the Holy Qur’an, which will become a source of infinite mercy and blessings for you and allow you to achieve the goal of becoming the best people. We must realise that this is the true objective of our lives; this is the purpose of our existence. We have not been sent down to this world to spend our lives engaged in small minded bickering, quarrelling and complaining. We have not been sent down to spend the whole of our lives working relentlessly in order to afford the luxuries of worldly objects. We have been sent down by God Almighty to be the best people, raised for the good of the whole of mankind, to shun and forbid all that is evil and to enjoin upon and strive for all that is good and to believe in Allah. This is the purpose of our existence, the objective of our lives. In a translation from the book of the Promised Messiah, we read: “Do good deeds in the best of manners and reject evil with repugnance. Remember that no deed of yours, which is devoid of righteousness will be ever entertained by God. An act of goodness is only that which is rooted in the fear of God. No act in which this root remains intact

May Allah allow us to achieve this noble aim. Ameen.

Live a Holy Life Let all your power be exerted to establish His Unity upon Earth. Be kind and merciful to the creatures of God. Let not your ongue speak evil against them. Speak not the word of pride an vanity to anyone though he be your subordinate or servant. Abuse not anyone though he might abuse you. Walk upon the Earth in humility and meekness and sympathise with your fellow beings, that you may be accepted by God. There are many who show meekness outwardly but inwardly they are ravening wolves. There are many who are smooth in appearance but they have the nature of a serpent. You cannot be accepted of your God until in your greatness and do not look upon the lowly but have mercy on them. If you are learned, glory not in your learning, and do not despise the ignorant with vanity but give them a word of kind advice. If you are rich, glory not in your riches and behave not proudly towards the poor, but serve and assist them. Shun the paths that lead to destruction. Fear God and be righteous. Worship not the creatures but severing all your earthly connections, be ye who devoted unto God. Let not your delight be in this world. Serve God only, and devote your life to His service. Hate every impurity and evil for God’s sake, for your Lord Is Holy. Let every morning bear you witness that you have passed the night with righteousness, and let every evening bear you witness that you have passed the day fearing God. (Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad) Wisdom of the Ages Only he is most honoured among you who most forgives the transgressions of his brother; and unfortunate is he who remains obdurate. (Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad) The only educated man is the one who has learned to abandon his own will and God’s will instead. (Thomas A.Kempis)

Spirit of Ahmadiyyat, THE ROAD TO BENIN TEXT: UMAR AHMAD SAFIR

lhamdolillah, All Praise belongs to Allah, for blessing us with a chance to attend one of the most historic and spiritual Jalsa’s ever held in the history of Africa. The Jalsa of Benin was a grand occasion, one full of history and prophecies fulfilled right in front of our eyes. By the grace of Allah, Maulana Abdul Ghany Jahangeer Khan, Khalid Karamat and I, were all given a unique chance to partake in this blessed event. Maulana Jahangeer Sahib attended as the official representative of Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih IV. Khalid and I, both members of Khuddamul Ahmadiyya who spend the majority of our spare time in the service of MTA International, were blessed with the wonderful opportunity to attend the Benin Jalsa. This was the first time in the history of MTA International that an MTA production team was sent to Africa, so indeed for both of us it was a great honour. This Jalsa was the largest of its kind to be held in the history of Africa , with over 50,000 people attending. The whole Jalsa

was blessed with kings from all over the country, and especially the king of kings, Akpaki Dagbara II, King of Parakou, who had also attended the UK Jalsa 2000. The reception given upon the arrival at the Jalsa site to the delegates was wholly unexpected and overwhelming with the local people singing and playing drums on either side of the entourage. Picture a scene where 50,000 people

Gah, they all began to rejoice and sing the praises of Allah in their own languages, as though they had not suffered at all. I was told by Afsar Jalsa Gah that the site for the Jalsa contained an area which was previously covered by trees. This area was required and so hundreds of Ahmadi men, women and children volunteered to cut these trees down using hand tools and no machinery as there was no electricity

Dozens of trucks were carrying hundreds of people from all over the country, all of whom were standing in the heat throughout the journey. available at the site. These trees were then removed and burned. Try to imagine all those extremely poor Ahmadis, many of whom were suffering from malaria, typhoid and other ailments, working away in temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit with their bare hands. Let’s hope we remember that the next time we are

called for waqar-e-amal. I must mention the wonderful work that was accomplished by the missionaries before, during and after the Jalsa. They worked tirelessly, putting up with very difficult conditions of residence, food and health, and not sleeping for three consecutive days.Their lack of sleep could be seen from their faces: by the end of the Jalsa, their eyes had turned black. The grand vision of the Promised Messiah (as), that some of the kings of Ahmadiyyat would come on horseback, was literally fulfilled in this Jalsa where the king of kings entered the Jalsa Gah, with his entourage of horses, accompanied by the powerful beat of African drums playing on all sides. Looking back at the eleven days I spent in Benin, I can wholeheartedly say that it was one of the most spiritual experiences of my life. During the eleven days we spent there, I spent time with missionaries who worked day and night, sometimes sleeping in the local villages, without food and clean water, living in huts with no sanitation, for one simple reason: to spread the message of Ahmadiyyat to the people of Benin. Huge crowds greeted us at every village we visited with the sound of drums and the glorious Praises of Allah,The Almighty in many languages. One such village, Ganvie, really stood out in many ways. It was unique in the sense that it is situated right in the middle of an immense lake, with all the houses built on pillars. A whole boat full of singers and musicians had been commissioned by the Ganvie Ahmadis to

accompany us from the shore to the village. We found that their mosque also stood on the water, which we could see flowing underneath us while we prayed. I am indebted to Al-Haj Hafiz Mamade Essan Secundar, Amir of Benin (who,by the way,is also the Amir of Togo,Niger,Sao Tome and Principe,Gabon and the Central African Republic!) and his family, as well as the missionaries and doctors for all the help they afforded us during our stay in Benin. To conclude, this was a spiritual experience to see Ahmadiyyat in its purest form, where we witnessed humble people, many from very poor backgrounds

displayed an exemplary spirit of sacrifice for the sake of Islam. Some gave their whole year’s supply of yams (the enormous brown coloured tubers you can find in afro-carribean shops), cassava and maize to contribute towards the Jalsa. Alhamdolillah, All Praise belongs to Allah. I would like to request everyone to remember the Jama’at of Benin in their prayers, and as Huzur said in his recent Question and Answer session in Fazl Mosque (aka.London Mosque) regarding Africa : “It is my message that everyone should try and go and visit Africa, as it will increase their faith”. On reflection, I can say personally that having been through a Jalsa with some of the poorest yet most sincere and loving Ahmadis in the world, and having eaten, conversed and interviewed even the greatest yet most humble of the Kings of Benin, my faith certainly was enhanced manifold and the whole trip had a deep impact on my whole perception of life. If anything it has certainly made me become more grateful to Allah for all the favours He has bestowed upon the Ahmadis of Europe, favours that the Ahmadis of Benin do not enjoy. I will end with the message of the Ahmadis of Benin to all of you. They asked me to greet all the Ahmadis of the UK, and to tell you that you are all welcome to Benin, or as they say it there: EKABO! The historic events that we have filmed in Benin, including the coverage of the whole Jalsa, will soon be shown on MTA, InshAllah.

aulana Ataul Mujeeb Rasheed Sahib (Missionary Incharge UK) had finished leading us all in Isha’a prayers in the Tahir Hall at Baitul Futuh. It was the evening of Friday, 25th January 2003 and members of the Jama’at had gathered together from all around the United Kingdom. These were people who had worked with or under Ibrahim Ahmad Noonan Sahib. Friends, collegues and teachers that had got to know Ibrahim Sahib over the past years. The event was hosted by both Amir Sahib and Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK. The arrangements were being finalised in

A time when the majority of the people prepared themselves in making their way to the Noor Hall, which is situated on the upper-top floor of the Baitul Futuh office complex. The sitting and dinner organisation was trusted upon the Naibeen of Sadr, Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK who were ably supported by the Khuddam from neighbouring regions. All person’s came in and took the nearest availble seat. The chief guest of the evening had yet to enter the hall of well wishers. The front table was now only missing the presence of our dear brother Ibrahim Sahib, the front table comprised of Amir Sahib, Amir Sahib’s naibeen, Sadr, Majlis Ansarullah UK, Sadr, Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK and his naibeen. Ibrahim Noonan Sahib entered, the hall came to a silence and instintively arose to their feet in his honour. Amir Sahib stood up to embrace our dear Ibrahim. Ibrahim Sahib took the seat next to Amir Sahib. Amir Sahib made the announcement that due the current time, they would start the function with dinner followed by the main session. The dinner was planned and organised very well. Khuddam were alocated to a couple of tables each. They were responsible for looking after the needs of the guests at their set table’s. The dinner was accompanied by sweet rice, otherwise known as ‘Zarda’. The main session began three quarter’s of an hour after the dinner. Amir Sahib courteously welcomed all and sundry. Like any other Jama’at event, tilawat and nazm were the first items on the agenda. The tilawat of the Holy Qur’an was recited by Abdul Razaq Sheikh from verses 31-36 of Surah Ha Mim Sajdah; translation of the above portion of the Holy Qur’an was delivered by Qudsi Rasheed. A nazm (poem) of Hadhrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmood Ahmad was performed by Ataul Ala; the

Report: Farewell He was brief and eloquent in speech. He began with taking us all back to his early years in Rabwah, Pakistan. A time when functions such as today were a regular feature; held in the honour of missionaries being sent abroad to propagate the message of Islam. Imam sahib accompanied by neighbouring youngsters would proceed to the train station to see off the missionaries as they boarded their set train. Imam sahib commented, “It used to a very emotional occasion...at the time, I was not in the position to realise the significance, but the scene is very much today imprinted in my mind.” Imam Sahib further added, “...whilst attending this function today, my thoughts have been taken back to that particular scene.” Ibrahim Sahib has spent many years, especially the last few under his wing as a pupil, indeed a dedicated and overly zealous student. Imam Sahib continued, now elaborating on the good and exemplary character of our dear brother. Firstly starting with a little history to how Ibrahim Sahib came to the fold of Islam: Ahmadiyyat; the true and forbearing light. This was very beneficial for those who may have seen, heard of but not known Ibrahim Sahib in person. Time was short, but so much to say Mirza Fakhar Ahmad,Sadr Sahib was next speaker, spoke on his time with him. The invited audience of over 350 people, consisting of senior members of the UK Jama’at and family and friends of Maulana Noonan, were addressed by Sadr Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya, who said that many Khuddam will almost certainly feel a sense of loss when Ibrahim Sahib leaves for Ireland. “Since becoming Sadr Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya,I have been struck by respect that Khuddam hold for Ibrahim Noonan Sahib”said Sadr Sahib. “It is clear that the key quality that he possessed was his strong personal example and the ability he had to establish and maintain a personal relationship with all Khuddam and Atfal that he met.” The audience was honoured by an emotional speech from Imam Sahib, who was Ibrahim Sahib’s principal tutor in his training as a Missionary. Imam Sahib said that Noonan Sahib was “saturated with the love of Islam”and that his transformation from a convert who joined Islam only a few years ago to a missionary is an example to all. Imam Sahib also stressed that he has

had one unique opportunity that does not fall on many in their lifetime – the honour of taking direct instruction and guidance offrom Hadhzrat Khalifatul Masih. Ibrahim Sahib speaks:Ibrahim Sahib specially mentioned his experiences with Huzur in his address to the audience. In an emotional speech,Ibrahim Sahib said that it was the first time that the guests must have had seen an Irishman speechless, such was the gratitude he had for what Allah had showered him with. The new Missionary in Charge for Ireland stated that he will find the most difficult aspect of his new role would be his absence from the close contact with Hazoor.

(Secretariat), Atfal, Finance,Tabligh,Talim and Tarbiyyat Departments with an opportunity for delegates to ask questions after each presentation. There were also smaller group sessions, where representatives from Qiadats attended presentations from other departments, who conveyed their plans for the year. There was also a special gathering of Qaideen in a meeting with Sadr, Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK, in which Sadr Sahib emphasised the importance of the Qaid, being an elected member of his Jama’at. Sadr Sahib also emphasised the importance of building personal relationships with Khuddam and Atfal, thereby understanding their needs.

For the first time, the programme included a main Question & Answer session, where office bearers had an opportunity to quiz members of the National Majlis-e-Amila. Feedback was also obtained from Qiadats in terms of the difficulties that they faced and how best to overcome them. Another new development was the use of electronic data. All Qaids were provided with the various documentation onin electronic form. Interestingly, the programme included a time management presentation by Mr. Rehan Shaheen; a talk from a successful Qaid, Mr.Tariq Hayat and a special address by Amir Sahib UK, who emphasised the importance of the role played by Office Bearer’s in the Jama’at. Sadr, Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK addressed the gathering and stated that all Khuddam should be involved in the Jama’at and all have a vital and varied roles to play in the progression of the Jama’at. All officer bearers should harness the best qualities in each Khadim or Tifl. “I hope the coming year will see greater opportunities to strengthen relationships and the organisation at the Qiadat level,” said Sadr Sahib. “Office Bearers should assume the importance of their role within their Jama’ats and understand the individual needs of Khuddam and Atfal.”

Tuesday, 11 September 2001, an estimated 5,000 people perished when two planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York. One cannot imagine the suffering these innocent people will have gone through before they died. People were observed jumping from the twin towers. Their choice was simple: being burnt alive while choking on toxic fumes, or leaping off a 110-storey building. Scores of brave fire fighters and medics poured into the buildings, before the towers collapsed. Even a team of priests who went into the building were not spared.

ON

WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? According to the media, 19 Muslim hijackers had seized control of four planes that day. All of them were willing to die and take the innocent lives of people with them, in the name of Islam. But is this Islam? Certainly not! One of the first things we learn about Islam is that the word comes from Salaam, which means peace and submission to the will of Allah. It is a faith far away from the violence, destruction and terrorism that we have seen.Worldwide, Muslims feel nothing but sympathy for those families who have lost loved ones in this tragedy. This is why we should make clear that such acts of horrific carnage have nothing to do with the beliefs of most Muslims and thus help to eradicate this continuous negative publicity that follows our faith. The Qur’an specifically declares that if anyone murders (an innocent) person it will be as if he has murdered the whole of humanity. Also, Islam forbids suicide. Allah has created all life and only He has the authority to take it. Hence every Muslim has the duty to look after the life which Allah has given them. “And cast not yourselves into ruin with your own hands” (Al-Baqarah, 2:196) Certain Muslim religious leaders or extremists quote the Qur’an out of context and state that suicide attacks in a ‘holy war’ are allowed and that the people who sacrifice their lives will be martyrs, assured of

paradise. They have brainwashed many Muslims into believing that these attacks are allowed in Islam when killing westerners or Israelis! They quote from the Qur’an: “And fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you, but do not transgress. Surely, Allah loves not the transgressors. And slay (these transgressors) wherever you meet them and drive them out from where they have driven you out; for persecution is worse than slaying” (Al-Baqarah, 2:191-194) These verses are actually meant for people who are defending their land under a legitimate state authority against unjust invaders. Never does it allow the killing of innocent civilians. The Qur’an does not teach us to live in a different world, rather it is full of lessons from the history of humanity as a whole. The Gospel and the Torah - the Christian and Jewish bibles - are mentioned because Islam demonstrates how true faith began with Allah, and accepts the existence of other cultures and shows how we can all live together in peace. The Holy Prophetsa declared: “From this day forward pagans would not attack Muslims; instead Muslims would now attack pagans.” (Bukhari, Kitabul Maghazi) These words are commonly misquoted to incite hatred towards Christians and Jews. Yet this account actually has a historical context and was in fact warning against alliances with certain tribes who had helped to attack Muslims in the seventh century. It meant that Muslims were going to take the offensive against tribes and parties which had so far been gratuitously attacking and harassing them. The Islamic principle is laid down in the Holy Qur’an that war is to be resorted to only for the sake of God and not for the sake of any selfish motives, not for aggrandisement nor for the advancement of any other interests (Al-Hajj, 22:40-42). The Holy Prophetsa wrote many letters to Christian and Jewish Kings and Emperors inviting them to Islam. He wrote:

Thus, there is no room in Islam to threaten or kill groups of any race, colour or religion. We are all equal in the sight of Allah. A few years ago, a Muslim hijacker who killed several passengers before being overpowered and arrested, was asked how he felt about having killed several westerners. He replied:“Those people were the sons and daughters of monkeys and pigs and hence deserved to die.” Is it such wonder that Islam is given such a bad name? All these falsifications from the teachings of Islam were prophesised by the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) over 1,400 years ago: “Islam will have nothing left of it except its name. Mosques, though full of worshippers, will be empty of guidance. Their religious scholars will be the worst creation under the canopy of Heaven.” (Bukhari) Sadly, this can be seen clearly today in all Muslim sects, except Ahmadiyyat, the renaissance of Islam. CONCLUSION Since 3,600 BC, there have been 14,531 wars resulting in three billion deaths over the years (current world population is five billion). Peace has prevailed for only 292 years on earth - about 5% of the time. So is world peace ever possible? Yes, but only by all people being treated the same and with justice. Finally, by corrupt ideologies being removed from the hearts and minds of all people, perhaps world peace can then be achieved. Our Holy Prophetsa said: “A believer remains within the scope of his religion as long as he does not kill another person illegally.” “A white has no superiority over a black, nor a black over a white, except by piety and good actions.” (Prophet’s last sermon) Such knowledge and words of guidance are desperately needed at this time to separate truth from falsehood. All Praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all the Worlds.

“O People of the Book! Come to a word equal between us and you that we worship none but Allah and associate no partners with Him.” (Zurqani)

STOP PRESS...STOP PRESS... On Wednesday 22nd January, the Government unveiled a new strategy for Higher Education Fees. The main points of the new strategy are given below: tudents in England are to face tuition fees of up to £3,000 a year from 2006, depending on which course they do at which University, but they will not pay them until after they graduate. That upper limit will then rise in line with inflation. The first £1,100 will continue to be means-tested, with poorer students' fees being paid for them on a sliding scale up to a family income of £30,000. The government has announced that about 40% will pay the full amount. In addition, from 2004, those with family incomes of less than £10,000 will get a grant of £1,000 a year as well as their full existing student loan entitlement. A reducing amount will be paid to those on family incomes of up to £20,000. The government says 30% of students will get the full £1,000 grant. Unlike now, nothing will have to be paid "up front" - it will all be repaid through the tax system when and if they are working. From 2005, the threshold at which graduates will

have to start repaying will rise from £10,000 of earnings to £15,000. They will then make annual payments of 9% of their earnings above £15,000 - though can pay off the debt more quickly if they wish. As now, loan repayments will have no real rate of interest. SHURA 2002 Sat-Sun, 2-3 November 2002 The 13th Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK Majlis-e-Shura was held on the first weekend in November (2nd & 3rd November). The Shura took place a week before the start of the month of Ramadhan. The Majlis-e-Shura was held in the Noor Hall, otherwise, referred known as Shura hall in Baitul Futuh. The Site arrangements were completed for Saturday morning. Representatives from the Northern and Southern Local were received as for any other Shura. More importance was added to this year’s shura as the election for Sadr was also to take place. Ibrahim Ahmad Noonan sahib came to the end of his fourth term as Sadr, Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK. By the grace of Allah the programme

of events for the Shura ran smoothly. The deliberations took place in their alloted reserved areas; proposals were discussed; ideas, suggestions noted for the final presentation during the open session the next evening. The first of the two days was building up for the main event of the evening, the election for Sadr. This session was chaired by Amir Sahib UK accompanied by Ahmad Yayha Sahib (Naib Amir & former Sadr, Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK). The rules and regulations were read out to the floor prior to the casting of votes for Sadr. This session was followed by a Question & Answer session with our former Sadr Sahib (Ibrahim Ahmad Noonan). The following day (Sunday) the organisers began tying up loose ends. The deliberations had taken place in their respective groups, now the spokes person (usually the chairman) was to air the outcome of these discussions for which the floor would now vote upon.

NORTH EAST UPDATE A recent update of the activities of the North East Region during the last few months. Following on from what was a very well attended Ijtema by Khuddam and Atfal from the region, the North East has been extremely busy. An example of a major function that was held was a North East First Aid training course at Baitul Hamd in Bradford. Five Doctors acted as trainers during which 25 Khuddam and Atfal participated. All trainees successfully completed the course, thus certifying them as being proficient in basic first aid. In addition, Khuddam from the

region helped to organise a regional Waqf-e-Nau and Atfal Tarbiyyati Training Class in December, in conjunction with Maulana Naseem Ahmad Bajwa Sahib, the Regional Missionary. This was also very successful and was attended by nearly 40 Atfal from the region. A third major function to have taken place since the Ijtema was a meeting and dinner with Mirza Fakhar Ahmad Sahib, Sadr Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK. This was a forum in which Sadr Sahib was able to meet

Khuddam from the North East including local and regional Amila members. In total about 60 Khuddam attended and the event was very well received. Khuddam and Atfal continue to attend weekly Sala’at and Qur'an classes throughout the region. The region is now planning to hold further functions including local and regional Ijtemas, a regional indoor cricket tournament and a regional football tournament/quiz competition, insha'Allah. The men whom I have seen succeed best in life have always been cheerful and hopeful men, who went about their business with a smile on their faces. (Kingsly)

y the grace of Allah, Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK was able to hold its 30th National Ijtema from Friday, September 6 to Sunday, September 8, 2002. Following the previous year’s trial at Baitul Futuh, Morden, the event returned to its traditional home at Islamabad,Tilford. Once again the Ijtema witnessed a record attendance. The 1,697 Khuddam and Atfal attending smashed the previous best and previous year’s figure of 1,596. Khuddam made up 1,122 of the count - compared to 1,034 the year before – whilst the Atfal numbered 575, 13 more than 2001.Together with more than 400 guests, including 115 from Lajna Imaillah, the total attendance exceeded the then Sadr, Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK, Ibrahim Ahmad Noonan’s target of 2,000 participants. Among the many encouraging factors witnessed was a heightened eagerness on the part of both Khuddam and Atfal to participate in the academic competitions. Many of the judges praised the high standard of Tilawat, Nazm and Speech competitors that should certainly bode well for the future. The Ijtema Village again catered for all regions to enjoy their own camping space to put up tents with the Saturday night barbeque proving to be another enjoyable event. The Ijtema was especially privileged with the visit of many eminent dignitaries from the Markaz and descendents of the Promised Messiah(as), including:

Sahibzada Mirza Azhar Ahmad, son of Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II and younger brother of present Hazur Also honouring the event, particularly at Saturday’s Question & Answer Session with Imam Ataul Mujeeb Rashed Sahib, was the inspirational Mirza Abdul Haq Sahib. How extraordinary that a 102-year-old can be so fit and healthy and still disseminate such oceanic knowledge in impeccable English. There were also faith-inspiring speeches delivered by distinguished scholars throughout the programme. But what Khuddam and Atfal will remember most was the audience with Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih IV on Friday evening. Numerous cars, minibuses and coaches made the trip to the Fazl Mosque to participate in Hazur’s weekly Urdu Majlis-e-Irfan, with translation facilities provided to English speaking brothers. Khuddam and Atfal were given the opportunity to address questions to Hazur in an enlightening 45-minute session.

Report: National Ijtema 2002 Hazur graciously answered more than 60 questions on topics ranging from Allah’s attributes, music and the eventual success of Ahmadiyyat. Inspired by renewed faith, all Khuddam and Atfal returned safely to Islamabad. We are forever grateful to our beloved Hazur for enabling us to benefit from being in his soul inspiring presence. Among the most memorable moments of the Ijtema, in keeping with the theme ‘the Signs of Allah’, was Sadr Sahib’s Saturday address in which he called upon representatives of different nationalities and races to stand on stage. Brothers from Africa, the Middle East, China, Indonesia and European countries stood united, testifying to the truth of the Promised Messiah(as). The atmosphere became further charged with beautiful recitations of a Qaseedah and Nazm, and the entire congregation

singing the Kalima and invoking blessings upon the Holy Prophet(saw) – an unforgettable scene and experience. For the fourth successive occasion Muqami Region hoisted aloft the Alme Inami. It was also the fourth consecutive year that the then Naib Sadr, Rafi Ahmad Bhatti Sahib, chaired the Ijtema Committee. May Allah bless in abundance and reward his efforts and the team who worked so diligently under him. May Allah also overlook everyone’s shortcomings and enable us to learn from our mistakes, Ameen. QUOTES FROM SPEECHES: The then Sadr Sahib: (Ibrahim Ahmad Noonan) “The behaviour and discipline of each and every Khadim should serve as a positive example for the youngsters who look up to them.Parents also have a responsibility in

ensuring their children are raised in the best of Islamic traditions.” (Final Session) Mirza Abdul Haq Sahib: “(A believer) should pray before Allah with all the energy that he has in him.He should ask for mercy as a man who is drowning in a river and is asking for help.He knows that if the help does not come,I’ll drown and die.” (Q/A Session) Maulana Abdul Ghany Jahangeer Khan: “We have to pour our hearts out in front of Allah.Today the world is in turmoil. You must use your prayers to change that.If you never pray for the world, never pray for peace, never pray for people who are suffering, you will have missed out on the whole purpose of the prayer.” (Sala’at Class)

Feedback: Post Ijtema Thoughts

POST IJTEMA THOUGHTS Comments and suggestions made by the members of the Ijtema Commitee after the the completion of the programme

Faez Ahmed (Regional Qaid, Islamabad): “Alhamdulillah, the Ijtema was enjoyed by the whole region thoroughly. It was wonderful to have the Ijtema back where it truly belongs - in Islamabad. We look forward to next year’s event in great anticipation where we shall aim to add to this year’s first positions in the Khuddam Quiz,Prepared Speech and Extempore Speech, Insha’Allah.”

Mubashar Ahmed (Regional Qaid, Middlesex): “The wind-up of the International Jalsa Salana seemed to overlap the preparations for Ijtema 2002. Never before did the boys work so hard. May Allah reward the sacrifices they made and may He forgive us for our shortcomings. Overall what a success! This year’s Ijtema was the largest ever gathering of Ahmadi youth in the UK, Alhamdulillah”

Rehan Akram (Regional Qaid, Midlands): "This year saw a leap forward for the Midlands in terms of attendance, with 112 Khuddam and Atfal making an appearance from the region, almost double the number from the previous year, Alhamdolillah. This has now set the benchmark for years to come. There was a good spirit in the camp and our Atfal again showed their worth by bringing home a number of key prizes.”

Mubbushar Mirza (Vice Chairman, Infrastructure): “The highlight for me this year was the Majlis-e-Irfan with Hazur. It was very inspiring to get so many Khuddam and Atfal from Islamabad to the Fazl Mosque. Alhamdulillah the Ijtema generally went very well, which owed much to the organisers using the same template as before. It ensures fewer mistakes are made each year.”

Waheed Akhtar (Regional Qaid, East): “The energy filled Islamabad from the first day, with people from all over the country eager to explore the Ijtema's offerings. The brothers from East cherished the time together, particularly at the barbecue. As the event drew to a close on Sunday, you reflected upon the hard work that made it a success. I thank Allah for making this an event to remember.”

Mirza Fakhar Ahmad (Vice Chairman, Atfal Ijtema): “Though the schedule was pushed for time, all the Atfal enjoyed themselves immensely. Nearly all the parents I spoke to said that their children had enjoyed the Ijtema, with Majlis-e-Irfan being the highlight of the event. The continuous competitions and the bouncy castle ensured that the Atfal were always busy with one thing or another. On the other hand, the Q/A session with Mirza Abdul Haq Sahib and the BBQ ensured that the Atfal participated in the main Khuddam events.”

Amir Ahmad (Regional Qaid, Herts): “When asked for an after-thought of the Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya National Ijtema 2002, the first thing that came to mind was teamwork. Many Khuddam worked together for the sake of Allah (swt) - an excellent example of unity.” Muhammed Amir Umer (Regional Qaid, North West): “A special effort was made this year to ensure Khuddam and Atfal attended all three days of the Ijtema. A 50-seater coach along with several cars departed from Manchester early on Friday morning. The attendance from the North West was excellent with all Qiadats in the region represented. 50 Khuddam and 20 Atfal travelled from Manchester alone. Alhamdulillah several prizes were won by our region too.” Inam Ullah (Vice Chairman, Site Management): “Alhamdulillah the event was an overall success. Considering the amount of obstacles organisers had to face, it was only with the grace of Allah that we all succeeded in achieving our objectives, which was to set up the whole Ijtema site. This included the Ijtema Village and the Khuddam,Atfal,VIP and dining marquees.”

Fahim Anwer (vice Chairman, Event Management): “I found everyone from the members of my team to the competitors all very accommodating and co-operative as the programme was subjected to a great deal of change. The participation in the events was more than the previous year and the standard a lot better. There was a new format for the Quiz, based on the BBC's University Challenge programme, which generated a lot of interest among the audience. Alhamdulillah we were also blessed with good weather for sports and Amir Sahib UK was present at the football, volleyball and tug-of-war finals, all of which he seemed to thoroughly enjoy.” Najm Khan (Regional Qaid, Baitul Futuh): “By the grace of Allah the Almighty, Baitul Futuh achieved much success this year in both academics and sports - most notably the 6-1 drubbing of North East in the football final! The region worked extremely hard to set up the Ijtema Gah in difficult circumstances and also to perform the never-ending task of Tarbiyyat Bairoon. Alhamdulillah,in all respects it was a successful Ijtema for the region and Khuddamul Ahmadiyya as a whole.Pray especially for the health of our beloved Hazur, who was sorely missed this year.”
