Writings of the Promised Messiah [as]
Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad [as] The Promised Messiah
“To become truly righteous it is necessary that a person abandoning utterly such outstanding vices as adultery, theft, trespass, hypocrisy, self-esteem, scorn of fellow beings, miserliness, should eschew all low morals and should make progress in high moral values. He should behave towards his fellow beings with politeness, courtesy and sympathy and should cultivate true fidelity and sincerity towards God Almighty. He should constantly seek occasions of beneficent service. He who combines all these qualities in himself is alone righteous. The possession of any one of these qualities would not entitle a person to be accounted righteous unless he possesses collectively all of them. It is only these concerning whom it is said: On them shall come no fear, nor shall they grieve. (Al-A‘raf, Ch.7:V.36) What more would they need? God Almighty becomes their guardian as it is said: And He protects the righteous. (Al-A‘raf, Ch.7:V.197) In another Hadith it is stated that God Almighty becomes their hands with which they grasp, and becomes their eyes with which they see, and becomes their ears with which they hear and becomes their feet with which they walk.” Malfuzat, vol. 2 Editorial Editorial Dear Brothers
[salam] Our beloved Huzur [atba] continuously reminds us of our obligations as Muslims, to both our Creator and His Creations, by admonishing us to supplicate sincerely and fill our mosques with worshippers. The purpose of this is to seek to win Allah’s pleasure by carrying out the fundamental obligation of observing Salaat. It is incumbent and obligatory upon every Muslim to offer Salaat five times a day—at the mosque in congregation—and understand and act upon what is being recited, rather than paying mere lip service to the commands of Allah. It is stated in the Holy Qur’an: ‘Their flesh reaches not Allah, nor their blood, but it is your righteousness that reaches Him’ (Al-Hajj, Ch.22:V.38) Therefore it is vitally important that we realise the role, as young Ahmadi Muslims that we have to play in society. True salvation is only achieved when the message of Allah is understood: ‘Thee alone do we worship and Thee alone do we implore for help’ (Al-Fatihah, Ch.1:V.5) Although our challenges are nowhere near as significant, or severe as those faced the Prophet of Islam [saw], or The Promised Messiah [as], the time we live in poses a variety of challenges—challenges which we must surmount, by heeding the admonishment of Huzur Aqdas [atba]. In a recent Friday Sermon, Huzur [atba] recited from the Holy Qur’an the following verse: ‘And, our Lord, raise up among them a Messenger from among themselves, who may recite to them Thy Signs and teach them the Book and Wisdom and may purify them; surely, Thou art the Mighty, the Wise.’ (Al-Baqarah, Ch.2:V.130) Huzur [atba] elucidates on the above stating that this describes a great model which illustrates the high standards of humility, meekness, sacrifice and prayer for one’s progeny, in order to remain connected to God. Hence as we have accepted the Bai’at of the Promised Messiah [as] we must fulfil our covenant of trust and make every effort to enhance and purify ourselves. This can only be done by spending time through the pursuit of Allah’s pleasure. There are many ill-vices and temptations in the world, which need to be avoided. Getting involved in programmes arranged by the Jama’at and the Majlis we can make a step in the right direction towards this ultimate goal. Huzur [atba] also mentioned that true servants of Allah do not let worldly grief influence them, their grief is only invoked through their desire for Allah’s pleasure. In fact, each episode of this righteous grief inspires them only further towards Him, until finally they enter into the lap of Allah where their hearts find succour. The Holy Qur’an states: ‘But for him who is awed by the lofty station of his Lord, there are two gardens.’ (Al-Rahman, Ch.55:V.47) The garden/paradise of this world is granted for being an Abd–e-Rahman (servant of the Gracious God) which goes on to also make one a recipient of the Paradise of the Hereafter. May Allah grace us all with his mercy and blessings. [ameen]

3 Islam Ahmadiyyat Summary of Friday Sermon
Summary of Friday Sermon delivered by Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad [atba], the Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community on 3rd February 2012. Note: Alislam team takes full responsibility for any errors or miscommunication in this synopsis of the Friday Sermon
H
uzur [atba] recited the following verse at the start of his Friday sermon: ‘Verily, Allah is with those who are righteous and those who do good.’ (Ch.16:V.129) and said that the Promised Messiah [as] has written: ‘In the Holy Qur’an more emphasis has been laid on virtue and righteousness than on any other commandment.’ (Ayyam-us-Sulh, Ruhani Khaza’in, vol. 14, p. 342 – Essence of Islam, Vol II, p. 347) Huzur [atba] explained that Taqwa (righteousness) is the basis for attaining nearness to God and the first half of the aforementioned Qur'anic verse cites this point. Huzur [atba] said there are two types of people in this world. Those who walk the paths of Taqwa, and who do good works to attain God’s nearness, who try for every virtue, and do so to have God’s pleasure which would take them closer to God. The other kind of people are those who although do good but when doing good, they are not aware that God is watching them. Among these are people who believe in the existence of God, believe that there is a Being Who sustains the heavens and the earth but while doing good they do not have God’s pleasure in view. This group also includes those who do not believe in the existence of God and deny His Being. Although God states that He is with the first kind of people, yet His Rabubiyyat (Divine quality to nurture and sustain) bestows on everyone, including those who do not abide by Taqwa. This bestowal is only of worldly significance, like sunlight, air etc. Both atheists and the righteous have similar measure of these beneficences. Likewise, fruits of worldly progress, inventions, advancement in science and achievements based on
6
Tariq Magazine June 2012
mental endeavours are similar for an atheist and a righteous person. Farmers, be they atheist or righteous, also receive corresponding benefits. If the Divine qualities of Rabubiyyat and Rahmaniyyat (Divine quality of being Gracious) were not in motion, life would be impossible even for a moment. Although God has established two paths, one of virtue and the other of evil, in many aspects He bestows in equal measure. Although God’s laws of nature are conclusive but a matter should be explained at this juncture which Huzur [atba] said he would. In order to manifest His Power, at times, God grants a righteous person more than the others in similar circumstances. When Hadhrat Musleh Maud [ra] had land cultivated in Sind (Pakistan) he sent people to look after the land and among them was an elder, Maulwi Qudrat Ullah Sanori. During one of his tours of the area, Hadhrat Musleh Maud [ra] was inspecting a cotton field and asked Maulwi sahib how much harvest did he anticipate. When Maulwi sahib gave his estimate some among the entourage said that his estimate was quite high. Maulwi sahib replied that he was sure there would be at least that much yield. He said he had offered Nafl on all four corners of the field and was convinced that his Prayers would help. Indeed, the yield was likewise. Huzur [atba] explained that sometimes in spite of similar climate and similar input of fertiliser, seeds etc. God demonstrates proof of His existence by virtue of prayers and increases yield. However, in addition to this material world, there exists a spiritual world of one who believes in God and has perfect faith in Him. The benefits and pleasures of this spiritual world cannot be seen by the worldly people. Those who walk
on the path of Taqwa think high, they believe in the unseen, they believe in life after death and have perfect faith in God’s promises. When they raise their hands in prayer, they witness signs of Divine acceptance. In the current age it is the Promised Messiah [as] who has taught us these matters. Many Ahmadis experience Divine connection; God informs them of various matters through dreams and visions and those things come to pass. This association with God also signifies that the promises of the Hereafter will be fulfilled as well. God states that if one is firm on Taqwa, one would experience benefits of this world as well as the next world. Those who do good for the sake of God’s pleasure are the righteous and they are the ones who walk the path of Taqwa. The Promised Messiah [as] has described a righteous person as one who essentially avoids every big and small sin, essentially progresses in virtues and high morals and essentially has a truly sincere connection with God. Huzur [atba] explained that true sincerity with God entails effort to fulfil the dues of worship of God and to try
Islam Ahmadiyyat
to the best of one’s ability to fulfil God’s commandments. Once this is achieved, as the verse recited at the start of the sermon states, it is the next stage from Taqwa, i.e. ‘…and those who do good…’. Mohsin (the Arabic word used in the verse) means one who confer something on someone without any effort on the other person’s part or treats others well or excel in his or her own work and performs each act most excellently in accordance to the given situation. Huzur [atba] said there are two types of Mohsin. One type is of those people who are ever-ready to help others with a sense of sympathy regardless of race, religion etc. Who help others in time of need and surpass in their service to bring about ease for others. Huzur [atba] said it is the duty of each Ahmadi to serve others with these sentiments and with the grace of God, many Ahmadis indeed serve humanity with these sentiments. These are Mohsineen (plural of Mohsin), but not of the type who boast about what they do; doing that is not a demonstration of Taqwa and good qualities. Huzur [atba] gave the example of our young engineers, doctors and other professionals who go to Africa to volunteer their services. They go to work on many on-going projects in Africa, like providing drinking water to the under-pr ivileged locals. They install water handpumps, try and provide electricity and are establishing schools for the locals so
that they may seek education. They are building hospitals and clinics to provide healthcare facilities. Our doctors and teachers stay in Africa for many years and serve. They stay in places without electricity or running water. Huzur [atba] said they go to serve and be counted among the Mohsineen. Their services are not in exchange of any remuneration, rather they are borne out of Taqwa and are to serve humanity. Similarly when natural disasters strike around the world, our doctors and other volunteers go to help with Humanity First. They do so purely to seek God’s pleasure. Others also serve but God’s pleasure is not in their view. Those who serve, benefit others with their service and their knowledge and only do so to please God, are the righteous and Mohsin. Huzur [atba] said he has mentioned before that our engineers have made a model village in Burkina Faso where electricity and running water are available as are foot paths and street lights. They have a community centre which meets the needs of the locals and small green houses where vegetables are grown which meet the local needs. Irrigation system for these is organised. Water hand pumps are installed in various villages. Huzur [atba] said photographs show the delight of the local people when these installations are in place. For a child who had to ferry
water in a bucket from five miles these services are a blessing. Our volunteers do not do this for any recompense. In fact when the young engineers return from the work they express their gratitude to Huzur [atba] that they were given the opportunity to serve and promise to go again. Huzur [atba] said this year Insha'Allah five model villages are being built in different countries. Ansarullah of USA and UK have taken the responsibility to fund these projects. Humanity First have also contributed in this and Huzur [atba] has asked Germany to also participate. Those who are enthusiastically working on this project become Mohsineen and those who are providing the funds are also included. Ahmadis have believed in the Imam of the age and they try and walk the path of Taqwa, they also try and be included among the Mohsineen and God states that He is with such people. Huzur [atba] said our young volunteers tell of the difficulties they encounter during their work and then God’s Power is manifested when imperceptibly the problem is solved. They say it increases their faith in God. Huzur [atba] explained that the word Mohsineen also signifies those who try and excel in their work and thus they do a favour on themselves as well. With their know-how and spiritual knowledge they benefit themselves and by practicing Tariq Magazine June 2012

… Huzur [atba] said God states that when His Being becomes pivotal for a believer, who gives him or herself over completely to God, then God Himself provides for such a person. He or she does not grieve anymore. it they benefit others. The higher one’s know-how and spiritual knowledge coupled with effort to benefit others, the higher level of being a Mohsin one attains. A new path is thus ascertained which takes one to greater progress in the spiritual and moral sense. This spiritual and moral advancement shows new perspectives of Divine association. One grows in nearness to God, acquires greater insight of His attributes and progresses in Taqwa. It is, as if a cycle that revolves around virtues, takes one to high levels of Taqwa and takes one closer to God and this in turn enables one to turn to virtues in an enhanced way. As a result one gains more spiritual knowledge regarding paying dues of God and dues of mankind. And thus God makes people Mohsineen. These are not Mohsineen who boast about what they do, rather these are those who bear hardship in order to serve others. Huzur [atba] said he often tells outsiders, leaders and others who raise objections about Islam or those who are not fully aware of the teachings of Islam that worldly people fully focus on receiving their rights. They set their level of demands and then they do whatever it takes to get them. As a result neither those who confer rights are fair nor those who want them. On the contrary Islam teaches to fulfil the right of others before they have a chance to demand their rights. Rather, these rights are fulfilled as a favour, while establishing human values so that one may be counted as Mohsineen; be mindful of the needs of others. Ahadith relate that the Holy Prophet [saw] said that one should provide the same food for one’s servant that one eats and should clothe

them in the same way as one dresses. If this adage is seen in perspective of the world, masses would not go hungry and without proper clothing anywhere in the world. Remarking on photographs of malnourished and starving African children and their starving mothers who cannot breastfeed their young children, Huzur [atba] said if rather than take possession of the resources of other countries, fulfilling rights is focussed on, self-help via enhancing the capacity of people is forthcoming, the problems of the world would be solved. If the Muslim countries kept this in view and their leaders focussed on becoming Mohsineen rather than augment their bank balances, the beautiful teaching of Islam would remove poverty and destituteness. But unfortunately it is mostly Muslim countries where the situation is worse and outsiders take advantage of this. Huzur [atba] said when he informs people of this they acknowledge the beauty of the teaching of Islam but when they return to their own assemblies, their own national interests intervene. Huzur [atba] said if national interests are rightful, most certainly they should be implemented; one has to look after one’s own first. However, when national interests mean usurping the wealth of others, it is wrong. This self-interest promotes disorder. Every Ahmadi should try and walk the path of Taqwa to be included in Mohsineen and try and experience God’s nearness. This alone helps in self-reformation and enables us to save the society within our limited sphere from disorder. We should try and adopt Divine attributes on human level in accordance with our capacities and pay
”
attention to fulfil the rights of God. This will make the blessings of this world subservient to us, these things will become of secondary importance in our lives and we will advance in Taqwa. God states in the Holy Qur’an: ‘Nay, whoever submits himself completely to Allah, while he is excellent in conduct, shall have his reward with his Lord. No fear shall come upon such, neither shall they grieve.’ (Ch.2:V.113) Explaining, Huzur [atba] said God states that when His Being becomes pivotal for a believer, who gives him or herself over completely to God, then God Himself provides for such a person. He or she does not grieve anymore. What grief can one have who utilises all their capacity to serve creation and humanity? This task takes one into the loving embrace of God and is the hallmark of real Taqwa. The Promised Messiah [as] said: ‘To become truly righteous it is necessary that a person abandoning utterly such outstanding vices as adultery, theft, trespass, hypocrisy, self-esteem, scorn of fellow beings, miserliness, should eschew all low morals and should make progress in high moral values. God Almighty becomes their guardian as it is said: ‘And He protects the righteous.’ ( Ch.7:V.197) In another Hadith it is stated that God Almighty becomes their hands with which they grasp, and becomes their eyes with which they see, and becomes their ears with which they hear and becomes their feet with which they walk. In another Hadith it is stated that God has proclaimed that he who bears enmity towards a friend of Mine should become ready to contend with Me. Still another Hadith declares that when anyone attacks a friend of God, He pounces upon him with the fierceness with which a tigress pounces upon one who seeks to deprive it of its young. (Malfuzat, vol. IV, pp. 400-401 – Essence of Islam, Vol II, pp. 351 - 352) Huzur [atba] said how fortunate is one, whose Friend God becomes; they do not grieve and any previous bad deeds of theirs are forgiven. Huzur [atba] said those who have sought political asylum are constantly concerned about the outcome. Some have lost a lot of weight in this fear, others are anxious because of the state of affairs in business, students are worried about exams. Thus, future prospects keep people in fear. Similarly, there is grief of what has passed. The greater the grief the sadder is the person. Many people of the world let their grief seriously affect them and become mentally disturbed. God states about those who are righteous and do good that they have no fear and they do not grieve. They do not ever let grief of this world affect them seriously. The fear and grief of a pious person is fear and grief of attaining God’s pleasure, as the Promised Messiah [as] expressed in an (Urdu) couplet: Night and day are spent in this heed When will the Beloved be pleased!
This fear and grief draws their attention to prayer and remembrance of God and the sound of: ‘…Aye! it is in the remembrance of Allah that hearts can find comfort;’ (Ch.13:V.29) assures them, their previous grief is removed and they are assured about the removal of future grief. Fear of those who walk on the path of Taqwa is fear of love because Taqwa means that fear or anxiety which keeps one restless to gain the pleasure of God. This restlessness strengthens the heart as opposed to the restlessness of a worldly person which attacks the heart. Ahmadis need to bring about pious changes in their condition which will take them to the path of Taqwa and will include them in Mohsineen. Our grief should only be for the love of God and this would increase His beneficences on us. If we attain the standards of His love, then He too will be with us. He showers His blessings when He sees that His servant is trying to become a Mohsin and is adopting Divine attributes for His sake. Not only will our concerns be removed, rather there would be a profusion of His blessings on us. The Promised Messiah [as] wrote: ‘True righteousness and ignorance cannot subsist together. True righteousness is accompanied by a light, as God the Glorious, has said: ‘O ye who believe! if you fear Allah, He will grant you a distinction and will remove your evils from you and will forgive you…’ (Ch.8:V.30) That is, O ye who believe, if you remain steadfast in righteousness and hold fast to it for the sake of Allah, with firmness and perseverance, He will single you out from among your detractors with marked distinction. That is, you shall be blessed with a light which will accompany you wherever you go. That is to say, that that light would illumine all their actions and words and faculties and senses. Their intellect would

be illumined and there would be light in all that they utter. There would be light in their eyes and in their ears and in their tongues and in their speech and in all their movements. The ways along which they walk would be lit up. All their ways, the ways of their faculties and their senses will be filled with light, and they will walk altogether in light.’ (A’ina-eKamalat-e-Islam, Ruhani Khaza’in, vol. 5, pp. 177-178, Essence of Islam, Vol. II, pp. 348 - 349) Explaining the above Huzur [atba] said when a person tries to become like this, his detractors come under God’s chastisement. Huzur [atba] prayed that may we be those who take beneficence to others, who attain beneficence themselves and may the evil of our detractors rebound on them. As we absorb God’s love and take the message of Islam to the world, we will also witness the comeuppance of our detractors. May God enable us to pray and to attain such a station. Next Huzur [atba] announced that he would lead funeral Prayer in absentia of Dr. Muhammad Amer sahib who was martyred in Baluchistan, Pakistan last December. As there is no Jama’at where he was, news of his martyrdom was received late. He was martyred in his clinic on 1 December 2011. He was the only Ahmadi in his family. He belonged to an organisation which is known for its extremism and it is likely that they could not tolerate one of their own to take Bai’at. He took his Bai’at in 1994 and leaves behind a widow and two small children. Huzur [atba] prayed that may God grant him a place in His Paradise and grant steadfastness to the bereaved.

The Life and Character of the Seal of the Prophets [saw]
Sixth part of the English rendering of Hadhrat Mirza Bashir Ahmad’s [ra] magnus opus, “Seerat Khatamun Nabiyyin”, an outstanding biography on the life of the Founder of Islam, the Holy Prophet Muhammad [saw]. Translated from Urdu by Ayyaz Mahmood Khan
By Hadhrat Mirza Bashir Ahmad [ra]
— part vi —
Does Organisation Developed by the Holy Prophet [saw] Have Religious Sanctity or Not? It should also be kept in mind that if the belief of Ali bin Abdur Razzaq, which is also that of those who moved away from Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya, were to be taken as valid, then it would raise the following question: Were the measures taken by the Holy Prophet [saw] for the development of an organisation religious or not? If we were to declare that Islam does not present any specific type of organisation, and that the Khilafat of Hadhrat Abu Bakr [ra], Hadhrat Umar [ra], Hadhrat Usman [ra] and Hadhrat Ali [ra] were interim arrangements of the Muslims, and that whatever they did for the stability of the organisation of the state was only done following in the footsteps of the Holy Prophet [saw], then the question would naturally arise: Were the steps taken by the Holy Prophet [saw] for the establishment of a state and organisation only provisional measures, or did they bear the support of religious authority? If they were temporary, then whatever was done by Hadhrat Abu Bakr [ra], Hadhrat Umar [ra], Hadhrat Usman [ra], and Hadhrat Ali [ra] in his obedience would also be provisional and would not be an authority of Shariah for us. On

the other hand, if the steps taken by the Holy Prophet [saw] related to the government and the organisation were religious, then we will have to adopt them as our guideline. Thus, this issue is not confined to the Khulafa but it also affects the Holy Prophet [saw]. If the institution of Khilafat is not based on a basic religious principle and is only done to follow the actions of the Holy Prophet [saw], then it would be concluded that the actions of the Holy Prophet [saw] related to the establishment of an organisation are not religious and do not need to be followed. Just as in the matter of food and clothing no one says that we should follow the Holy Prophet [saw] literally. For instance, no one says that the Holy Prophet [saw] wore a loincloth so others should also wear it, or that the Holy Prophet [saw] used to eat dates so we should also eat the same. Only a general principal is deduced from these practices that we should live a simple life. Similarly, if the steps taken by the Holy Prophet [saw], which are concerned with the establishment of an organisation, are not considered religious but are called provisional measures, then they would not be an authority for us to follow. At the most, we would be able to assert that with the fall of the rival Arabian empire, all of Arabia came under his command, so, he was compelled to establish a kind of organisation. Since
laws and regulations were required for the establishment of an organisation, he made some as well. His only purpose was to improve the condition of people and not to establish an organisation bearing religious authority for all time. In short, by accepting this doctrine, we would also have to accept that the measures taken by the Holy Prophet [saw] related to the establishment of an organisation carry no religious significance, and that they were simply done to meet the need of the time. Had they borne religious authority, they would have been a Sunnah binding on later generations. This is the natural conclusion which results from this doctrine. Those who turned away from Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya have always tried to hide this natural conclusion from people for fear that if they declare that the part of the life of the Holy Prophet [saw] concerned with management of the affairs of the state was only a worldly matter to meet provisional needs of the time, the Muslims would not tolerate it, considering it a defamation of the Holy Prophet [saw]. Therefore, they have always taken a very irrational approach to this subject. However, Ali bin Abdur Razzaq, one of the scholars of Jamia Al–Azher, has discussed this issue openly and boldly, and has reached the logical conclusion that I just mentioned. It is, therefore, an interesting coincidence that when I started collecting notes on this topic, it crossed my mind that if this
Islam Ahmadiyyat
argument were stretched to its limits, it would also affect the Holy Prophet [saw]. One would have to admit that this part of his life was merely a worldly matter which was adopted to meet the needs of that time. I reached that conclusion initially; later, when I read his book, I noticed that he drew exactly the same inference that I drew, though he, being afraid of Muslims, avoided discussing it in detail. He tried to present his perspective like sugar-coated poison. Nevertheless, the crux of his reasoning becomes very clear when he points out that the institutions of justice, and other requisites of government like budgeting, were not present at that time, which shows that whatever the Holy Prophet [saw] did was to meet the immediate needs of the time. A Dangerous Outcome of the Denial of Khilafat The fact is that with the denial of Khilafat, one would have to admit that the government of Hadhrat Muhammad [saw] was not religious either. No matter how gently this idea is presented out of fear of opposition from Muslims, the fact is that it not only denies the religious status of the rule of the Khulafa, but it also contends that the part of the life of the Holy Prophet [saw] which dealt with the management of the affairs of state was only worldly, undertaken to fulfil the needs of that
time. It would be concluded that, with the exception of Salaat, Fasting, Hajj, and Zakat, organisational matters are left to the discretion of the people, and they are given full liberty by the Holy Prophet [saw] to follow the organisation of their own choice. Ali bin Abdur Razzaq has discussed this subject also, and he says that: If the Holy Prophet [saw] had been running a government in the true sense of the word, he would have appointed judges everywhere and would have approved budgets on a regular basis. This is not found in his life. In this way, he tries to prove that the involvement of the Holy Prophet [saw] in management of the affairs of the state was only provisional. Just as when there is no chair in a house, one sits on the floor, in the same way, he made some laws to establish a temporary organisation; this was a worldly matter and cannot be taken as a religious sanction. In short, by accepting this principle, not only is the organisation of state established by the Khulafa stripped of religious status, but the measures taken by the Holy Prophet [saw] in this regard have to be declared worldly as well. One would have to admit that they were not a part of Sunnah to be followed by the people of later generations. After these introductory comments, I will now discuss the fundamental issues of Khilafat and the Islamic organisation.
Two Types of Religion To fully comprehend this matter, it is necessary to understand that there are two types of religion in the world. First, those which confine their jurisdiction to certain types of prayers and doctrines, and treat worldly matters as separate. They do not interfere in worldly affairs, though they provide guidance on how to perform Salaat, fast, give charity, or carry out obligations due to other people. In short, they give commands for worship and remembrance of Allah, but they do not give guidelines for such affairs as the development of an organisation, economy, international affairs, trade, or inheritance. Real Reason why Shariah is called a Curse in Christianity Christianity is one such religion. It emphatically alleges that the Shariah is a curse, primarily, because they seek to set apart the personal behaviour of people from the checks and restraints of religion. For them, the only purpose of religion is to direct people to say Salaat, observe fast, perform Hajj, pay Zakat, and accept Christ as God. They believe that the Shariah has no authority to impose laws concerning murder, riots, thefts and organised robbery; nor to lay down guidelines on how nations should enter into treaties with one another, or control the economy. They argue, concerning the rights of men and Tariq Magazine June 2012
11
Islam Ahmadiyyat women to inheritance, that the Shariah again has nothing to do with it; rather, it is the duty of the parliament of a country to promulgate such laws as are in the interest of the nation. Similarly, they assert that if the government has decided to institute interest, whether in the shape of currency or goods, religion cannot declare that such money is unlawful. In short, they detest such commands of religion as are related to the organisation, and thus, they declare the Shariah to be a curse. This does not imply that fasting is a curse. Had it been a curse, it would not have been written in older editions of the Bible: “But the only way to force out that kind of demon is by praying and fasting.” Is it possible that in the presence of such texts in the Gospels, the Shariah be called a curse? The fact is that when the Christians declare the Shariah to be a curse, they really mean that the authority of religion over the organisation of a country is a curse. To them, religion has no control over affairs of the world; rather, a country can itself come up with rules and regulations of its own choice. Thus, they did away with restrictions imposed by the Mosaic Shariah related to affairs of the state. No doubt, when Hadhrat ‘Isa [as] ( Jesus Christ) uttered these words (assuming that he did indeed say so), he did not mean what they attribute to him. On the contrary, he meant that the Jews gave greater importance to injunctions than to the inner self and spirituality, and this became a curse for them and pushed them far away from truth. When Christianity spread in Rome, people were not willing to relinquish their national constitution. They considered Roman law superior to every other law, in fact, European governments still benefit from Roman law. Therefore, the people of that time, who were very enlightened and possessed remarkable legal acumen, presumed that no one else could frame a better law than those. They acknowledged the goodness in the teachings of Christianity related to the love of God Almighty, miracles, Divine signs, prayers, and the sacrifices made by Christ. When they studied the teachings of Christianity, their hearts inclined towards it, and they admitted that this religion was worth accepting. At the same time, they could not bear that Judaic law, which they deemed inferior to Roman law, was enforced among them. Thus, they found themselves in utter
12
Tariq Magazine June 2012
dilemma. On the one hand, they were attracted by the alluring teachings of Christianity, but on the other hand, their superiority complex concerning Roman law prevented them from bowing before Judaic law. In this state of confusion, they came across these lines in The New Testament: “Anyone who tries to please God by obeying the Law is under a curse.” “But Christ rescued us from the Law’s curse, when he became a curse in our place.” These are not the words of Jesus [as], but are of Paul. Nevertheless, the Romans found an excuse, and by extending the implication of these sentences, they decided that religion had no authority to issue commands concerning affairs of the world, and that every nation could frame its own laws according to the requirements of these affairs. Hadhrat ‘Isa [as] and his disciples only meant (if these are his words) that the Jews placed excessive emphasis on the letter of the Law and completely ignored righteousness. This became the cause of their being accursed. They did not observe prayers except in name, and their hearts did not turn towards God Almighty with love and fear, so this type of prayer became a curse for them. They slaughtered animals for alms and charity, but they never slaughtered their ego, so this charity and sacrifice also became a curse for them. In their acts of worship, they apparently bowed their heads down before God Almighty, but their hearts never bowed before Him, so their worship also became a curse for them. They, no doubt, spent in charity and abandoned their wealth for sacrifice before God Almighty, but they were not ready to abandon their false ideas, so Zakat also became a curse for them. In short, the Jews laid greater emphasis on pretence and ignored inner purification; therefore, ‘Hadhrat ‘Isa [as] or his disciples had to point out that following the injunctions of the Shariah in name without purifying the inner self is a curse. It did not mean that the Shariah was a curse; rather, it meant that their ostentation and disregard for inner purification had become a curse for them. Nevertheless, the Romans found an excuse, and they misinterpreted these verses to mean that religion should be followed only in matters of prayer and fasting, but not in worldly matters, for religion has no authority over these
matters. It is up to people to draft the law of their choice. The Romans, who called Christianity and the Shariah a curse, forced people to abide by the laws which they drafted themselves. If the mere presence of a law had been a curse, they would not have enacted any law. They declared religion a curse on one hand and enacted various laws for their use on the other. This shows that according to them, the meaning of this verse was that only people had the right to make laws of their choice; religion had no right to present commandments dealing with temporal affairs. In this way, they freed themselves of those restrictions which were imposed by the Mosaic Shariah related to affairs of the state. Involvement of Judaism in the Institution of Government The second type of religions are those which have broadened their jurisdiction and made rules and regulations for all spheres of life, including human activities, mutual relations, institutions of government, etc. The followers of these faiths must accept the authority of religion in the affairs of government. Individuals and societies must abide by these injunctions as obligatorily, just as they accept doctrines and commandments like prayers and fasting that affect personal life. Judaism is a good example of this type. If one studies Mosaic Shariah, one will find all types of injunctions including, but not limited to, punishments prescribed for murder and theft, rules and regulations to be observed in war, principles governing sacrifice and also guidelines for transactions and trade. Thus, Judaism deals with matters related to government. Therefore, whoever studies the Mosaic Shariah will conclude that religion has authority not only over individual matters, but also over the affairs of the nation and state. What Kind of Religion is Islam? Now we must determine the type of religion Islam is: does it belong to the first category or the second? For this purpose, we must see whether Islam has exerted authority over national matters or not. If Hadhrat Muhammad [saw] dealt with national affairs out of his own desire or because of the dire needs of the nation, then it will have to be admitted that his actions are not binding on us. Just as when someone finds a stray child in a jungle and brings him in his home out of pity, it does not mean that he has the right of guardianship over him. Similarly,
Islam Ahmadiyyat
Hadhrat Muhammad [saw] adopted orphans of Arabia out of feelings of pity for them, but this did not confer upon him the right of guardianship over them. Rather, when they came of age, they had the right to adopt a law of their own choice. On the contrary, if Islamic Shariah does indeed include injunctions, then it will have to be admitted that the Holy Prophet [saw] did not interfere in these matters out of his own desire; rather, he did so when God Almighty commanded him. If this is proven, then it will in turn prove that the part of his life spent in the management of the affairs of state is religious in nature. The Muslims, who are bound by Islamic directives in a purely religious organisation, are also not free in the matter of the organisation of state, and are under obligation to submit to the organisation of the state established by Islamic Shariah. Even one glance at the Holy Qur’an and sayings of the Holy Prophet [saw] shows manifestly that Islam is not among the religions of the first category mentioned above but is of the second category. Islam issued not only for certain beliefs and individual behaviour, but also for government and law. Therefore, it not only asks its followers to observe Salaat, Fast, perform Hajj, and pay the Zakat, but it also gives precepts related to government and law. It discusses the relationship between husband and wife, and makes clear what should be done and what measures should be taken towards mutual reconciliation in case of a dispute; if a man ever has to punish his wife physically, Islam gives directives on how much and what sort of punishment should be given. Similarly, it elaborates the principles of transactions, prescribes
the number of witnesses in case of debt, and discusses the illegality of certain types of debt. It also mentions the principles of business and finance, and defines the laws governing testimonies upon which the organisation of Qada ( Justice) is based. Thus, it specifies the types of witnesses and their numbers, and the issues that should be taken into consideration while reviewing their testimonies as well. Likewise, it gives various instructions about the judiciary and mentions how judges should pass a judgment. It also prescribes physical punishments for various crimes which come under the authority of government, e.g. the sentence for murder and theft. It outlines the laws of inheritance, restricts the government’s jurisdiction of taxation, gives details about taxes, and defines the authority of the government in relation to the expenditure of these taxes. Rules for the army and rules governing treaties between nations are also set forth. Similarly, it gives basic principles for international relations. It also specifies rules for employees and employers, and even for roads. In short, Islam defines all matters concerned with government. Thus, it cannot be said that Islam has given free rein to government; rather, it has discussed every department of government in details. Whosoever follows Islam, and finds details of all commands related to government, cannot deny the relationship between government and religion. On the contrary, he will have to admit that those acts of the Holy Prophet [saw] which are related to government are as binding as the principles of Salaat, Fasting, etc. This is because the God who commands us to pray, fast, perform Hajj, and pay
the Zakat has also given guidelines for the political affairs and organisation of a country. It cannot be said that every nation and every country is at liberty to invent an organisation of its own choice; rather, it has to follow Islamic rules in all spheres of life. If the Holy Prophet [saw] had adopted these of his own choice, we could have argued that people were free in this respect. However, when we admit that these rules and regulations have been described in the Holy Qur’an, and that the Holy Prophet [saw] narrated them under the command of God Almighty, then it shows that it was not the personal approach of the Holy Prophet [saw]. Considering that the Holy Qur’an has revealed all the basic precepts of governance, it would be unreasonable to assume that it does not clarify how government should implement them. It would be like a person who collects timber, windows, doors, paint, etc. to build a house, but when asked about the expected time of construction and proposed drawing of the house, he shows complete ignorance. Clearly, when he arranged for the bricks, had the doors, windows, and ventilators made, and acquired the lime and clay, his purpose was to build a house and not to let all these things go waste. Similarly, when the Holy Qur’an has mentioned all these things related to government, then the human mind cannot accept that it has not given commands on how to run government and the type of organisation the Islamic government should have. If it does not make this clear, then one would have to admit that the Holy Qur’an (God forbid) is flawed.

4. Salvation through Holy Qur’an Those whom have quenched their spiritual thirst through the Holy Qur’an will be under no illusion as to the untold mercy contained within it. Hadhrat Masih Maud [as] relates about how salvation can be achieved through the Holy Qur’an— writing: The Holy Qur’an teaches us that salvation is a matter that is manifested in this very life as He has said: `But whoso is blind in this world will be blind in the Hereafter also. (Ch.17:V.73) This means that a person takes with him from this world the faculties for seeing God and the means of eternal salvation. He has repeatedly indicated that the means of man's attaining salvation is eternal as God Himself is eternal. It is not that after a time He recalled that if men cannot attain salvation by any other means, He should bestow salvation on them by killing Himself. A person can be described as having attained salvation when all his passions are consumed and God's will becomes his will and he becomes so devoted to God out of love that nothing remains his and everything becomes God's. All his words and deeds and movements and designs should be for God and he should perceive in his heart that all his delights are now in God and that a moment's separation from God means death for him. He should be so inebriated with the love of God that everything beside God should be naught in his estimation. If the whole world should attack him with swords and should seek to separate him from God through fear, he should remain steadfast like a firm mountain. The fire of perfect love should flare up within him and he
14

should hate sin. As other people love their children and wives and friends so that their love pervades their hearts, and the death of any of them distresses them so much as if it was their own death, that type of love and indeed a greater love should be generated in his heart for God, so much so that he should become like an insane person in the grip of that love and should be ready to endure every torment and every wound for the sake of that love so that God Almighty may be pleased with him. When a person is overcome to this degree by his love of God, all his passions are burnt up by the fire of love and a great revolution takes place in his nature and he is bestowed a heart that he did not posses before, and is bestowed eyes that he did not have before, and he is so much affected by certainty that he begins to see God in this very world. That burning sensation for the world with which the nature of the worldly is afflicted like hell, is totally removed from him and he is bestowed a life of comfort and pleasure and delight. This condition of his is called salvation inasmuch as his soul falling upon the threshold of God with love and devotion finds unending comfort and the union of his love with the love of God transports him to a station of devotion which is beyond description. (Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. Article attached to Chashma-e- Ma'rifat, 47-48) The miracles of the Holy Qur’an are so vast they cannot be counted; those are the blessed ones who have insight and explore the miracles of the Holy Book and to its revelations. The understanding of the verses of the Qur’an require such deep theological understanding that only one who truly devotes himself to the Will of Allah (Ta’la) will be given
the insight to unlock its inner secrets. For example, it is only through devoted study that a seeker of truth may come to understand which verses help to understand the meanings of others; for it is known that the best Tafsir (interpretation) of the verses of the Holy Qur’an are the verses themselves. Hadhrat ‘Umar ibn Khattab [ra] related that the Holy Prophet [saw] said, ‘Allah will exalt many people through this book (the Qur’an), and will abase many because of it.’ (Muslim) (Riyadh-assalihin of Imam Nawawi, Published 1980 by biddles ltd Surrey, pg 186, no.1000, translated by Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan) In another Hadith Hadhrat ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn ‘As [ra] related that the Holy Prophet [saw] said, ‘One who is given to reciting the Qur’an will be told on the day of judgement : go on reciting and ascending, and recite slowly as was thy wont in life, for thy station, will be where the last verse of thy recitation will end.’ (Abu dawud and Tirmidhi) (Riyadh-assalihin of Imam Nawawi, Published 1980 by Biddles ltd Surrey, pg 186, no. 1005, translated by Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan) As has been mentioned, the Holy Prophet [saw] was, without doubt, the true embodiment and manifestation of the Holy Qur’an. If one just glances at his life his eyes will be filled with tears at the extremities he went to so as to be true to his belief and covenant with Almighty Allah [swt]. It is a miracle of Allah how the Holy Prophet [saw] not only delivered the message (Risala) as he did but also the way that he was the great teacher (Mu’alm) who taught
Islam Ahmadiyyat his companions and continues to teach the Muslims. There is not a righteous Muslim in the world that doesn’t carry the Holy Prophet [saw] with them in their every action and daily activity. The light of Allah (Ta’la) descended upon the Holy Prophet [saw] fourteen hundred years ago and from him entered into the hearts of the Ummah. Just as the heart pumps blood throughout the body so does the light of the Holy Prophet [saw] emanate from his spiritual heart throughout the body of the Ummah. It is upon each Muslim to continue spreading this light by conveying and teaching the Risala of the Holy Prophet [saw] to each and every person they encounter. Hadhrat ‘Uthman [ra] relates that the Holy Prophet [saw] said; ‘the best amongst you is the one who learns the Qur’an and teaches it’ (Bukhari) (Riyadh-as-salihin of Imam Nawawi, Published 1980 by Biddles ltd Surrey, pg 185, no. 997, translated by Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan) In a related hadith Hadhrat ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar [ra] relates that the Holy Prophet [saw] said; ‘…not to wish to be the like except of two men. A man whom Allah has given the knowledge of the book and he recites it during the hours of the night, and a man whom Allah has given wealth, and he spends it in charity during the night and the hours of the day.’ (Bukhari)
4.1 Blessings from the Holy Qur’an As mentioned, the blessings which Hadhrat Masih Maud [as] received were by virtue of his complete reverence and love for his Holy Master Muhammad [saw] and how Allah (Ta’la), through His Benevolence, raised him to the station of Imam al-Mahdi and Promised Messiah as foretold by the Holy Prophet [saw]. Allah the Almighty (Ta’la) had graced Hadhrat Masih Maud [as] with blessing after blessing and such examples are noted below,
‘In 1893 Hudhoor [as] invited Muslim divines to hold an essay competition with him in Arabic. Hudhoor [as] revealed that God Almighty has bestowed him perfect command of Arabic language. Therefore no one can compete with him. No one accepted the invitation despite the fact that he gave this challenge many times over. Hudhoor [as] made known in 1895 in his book Minan al-Rahman that all the languages of the world have originated from Arabic language. Therefore Arabic is the mother of all languages. He also asserted that Arabic is the language of God Almighty. He offered a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 to anyone who could disprove this claim. This was an amazing discovery as scholars have been investigating for a long time to find the most original language. European scholars had pointed to either Sanskrit or Pahlvi. The latest research however indicates that Arabic is the most original language, all others derived from it. (Sh. Hadhrat Mohammad Ahmad Mazhar has traced 13 languages to Arabic in his book: Arabic, the Source of All Languages, 1963) (Hazrat Mirza Bashir-ud-din Mahmud Ahmad. Invitation to Ahmadiyya. Argument nine)
4.2 P urpose of reciting Holy Qur’an Our beloved Khalifa, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad [atba], in a Friday sermon (14th March 2008) advised Jama’at members that they should focus their attention to the recitation of the Holy Qur’an and more importantly that they should make great strivings to understand its meaning and to not simply recite it in parrot fashion. The Qur’an is a Divine book and deserves the full attention of its believers and total respect and dedication to completely understand what is been recited. On this subject our beloved Holy Prophet [saw] as related by Hadhrat Ibn ‘Umar [ra] is reported to have said; ‘The example of the person who knows the Qur’an by heart is like the owner of tied camels. If he keeps them tied, he will control them, but if he releases them, they will run away.’(Bukhari) (Riyadh-as-salihin of Imam Nawawi, Published 1980 by Biddles ltd Surrey, pg 186, no. 1007, translated by Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan)
It has also been related to us by Hadhrat Abdullah [ra] that the Holy Prophet [saw] said; ‘it is a bad thing that some of you say, I have forgotten such and such verse of the Qur’an, for indeed, he has been caused (by Allah) to forget it. So you must keep on reciting the Qur’an because it escapes from the hearts of men faster than camel do.’(Bukhari) Further elaborating on the subject Hadhrat Masih Maud [as] writes; I was young and am now old and people can bear witness that I never concerned myself with world affairs and was always interested in matters of the faith. I have found the word which is called the Qur’an of the utmost holiness and full of spiritual wisdom. It does not deify any man and does not bring God into contempt by excluding souls and bodies from his creation. The Holy Qur’an in the end brings down that blessing on the heart of man for which a religion is embraced and makes him the heir of divine grace. Then having found a light, how shall we revert to darkness and having eyes how shall we become blind (Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. Sanatan dharma, ruhani khaza’in, vol.19, p 474) This behaviour must be inculcated in us all and those who have a greater understanding and fluency in the Holy Qur’an should help others and teach them, this is a noble deed which is pleasing to Allah the Almighty (Ta’la). We should not lose hope or despair if difficulty is present in reciting the Holy Qur’an as Allah (Ta’la) helps those in need. Truly, only Allah [swt] can help and bestow His Mercy upon us; it is only in Him that we may find our salvation. We must not be slack in our duty and struggle and strive ourselves to make a better life for one another, our children, wider families and mankind. This is a personal jihad one takes upon himself, to rectify his behaviour morally and spiritually. It is a struggle but one that is rewarded favourably by Allah the Almighty (Ta’la) if one’s intentions are clear, pure and honest. We must therefore submit ourselves humbly and in a meek and steadfast manner to the will of Allah (Ta’la) and strictly adhere to the teachings of Allah the Almighty (Ta’la) Tariq Magazine June 2012

as mentioned in the Holy Qur’an and practiced by the Holy Prophet [saw].
4.3 Blessings through the Holy Prophet [saw] Hadhrat Masih Maud [as] had explained that it is only through the Holy Prophet [saw] that we can attain such blessings, and deep rooted understanding, as he himself had been able to achieve. Hadhrat Masih Maud [as] himself was a complete and devoted follower of the Holy Prophet [saw]. He always firmly believed that the love of the Holy Prophet [saw] was far more superior and deep than the love of a mother for her child. All of his spiritual eminence was, through the Grace of Allah (Ta’la), achieved through complete submission to Holy Prophet [saw] (Fana fir-Rasul). Allah (Ta’la) endowed him with His blessings and favours and commissioned him to such a status. Hadhrat Masih Maud [as] became

the true reflection and manifestation of the Holy Prophet [saw] (Buruz). Hadhrat Masih Maud [as] explains this as follows: ‘It would not have been possible for me to have attained this grace if I had not followed the footsteps of my lord and master, the pride of all the prophets, the best of mankind, Muhammad, the chosen one, peace and blessings of Allah be on him. Whatever I have achieved, I have achieved by following him, and I know from verified reliable experience that no man can reach God and obtain a deeper understanding of His ways without following that Prophet, may peace and blessings of Allah be on him. Now, let me also make it known that the very first thing you are rewarded with, after having completely submitted yourself to the instructions and teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, is that you are granted a new heart which is always rightly inclined, that is to say, a heart which has turned cold upon the love of this material world, and instead it begins to yearn for
an everlasting heavenly pleasure. Having achieved this desire, this heart is now fit to receive that perfect and purest love–the love of God. Because of your complete obedience to him, all these blessings are bequeathed to you as his spiritual heritage.’ (Roohani Khaza'in, Vol. 22: Haqeeqatul Wahi, pp. 64-65)
4.4 Preservation of Holy Qur’an Allah the Almighty (Ta’la) states in the Holy Qur’an; Verily, We Ourself have sent down this Exhortation, and most surely We will be its Guardian. (Surah al-Hijr. 15:10) As Allah, in His divine wisdom, has explained, He Himself will be the Holy Qur’an’s Guardian. Therefore, those who taunt and make foolish remarks about this Holy Book and say that it is not the word of Allah are surely blind to understand the miracles and power and Divinity of Allah the Almighty (Ta’la).
Islam Ahmadiyyat
Their efforts to challenge the Qur’an and design of Allah (Ta’la) are in vain and for the remainder of eternity the Holy Qur’an will remain unchanged. Allah (Ta’la) states in the Holy Qur’an; And We are gradually revealing of the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to the believers; but it only adds to the loss of the wrongdoers. (Surah Bani Isra’il, Ch.17:V.83) O ye who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared; and let not death overtake you except when you are in a state of submission.
Conclusion I conclude this article with the writings of the Promised Messiah [as] and I hope and pray that may Allah the Almighty shower his continued blessings and mercy upon us and make the Holy Qur’an a continued guide for our lives. May the Holy Qur’an allow us to bring a reformed change in us and
become an exhortation for us so that we can take heed of Allah’s commandments that are manifested in this priceless treasure. May the Holy Qur’an become a continued light for us so that we can purify our inner selves and outer selves and physically and spiritually cleanse us of all ill and vices. May the Holy Qur’an quench of sincere desires, open our hearts and bosoms to infiltrate the beauty of the Holy Qur’an in us. May the light of the Holy Qur’an infuse into our souls and perfume us with its beauties. The Promised Messiah [as] writes: With the Divine word, the dawn of truth has broken;
The eye which does not partake of the light of the Furqan; I declare in the name of God, that it will never be redeemed of its blindness. The one who seeks the Divine garden but leaves the Qur’an aside; We can swear that he has never even smelled its fragrance. I do not compare even with the sun the light which I see; Hundreds of suns encircle it in humility. Unfortunate and benighted are the people,
The eye that has not seen those Holy Scriptures has seen nothing.
Who turn their backs upon this light because of their self-conceit.
The castle of my heart is filled with the fragrance of that musk;

Two Khuddam had the responsibility to set up the stall in the morning. Mr Idris Yousaf and Arfan Ahmed set off at 8am to Baitus Samad Mosque to collect the exhibition and all the material. Once the car was loaded Idris Yousaf and Arfan Ahmed offered silent prayer and made their way to the market place.
llah has sent down the best Message in the form of a Book, whose verses are mutually supporting and repeated in diverse forms at which do creep the skins of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts soften to the remembrance of Allah. Such is the guidance of Allah; He guides therewith whom He pleases. And he whom Allah adjudges astray—he shall have no guide.
By the grace of Allah the Almighty on Saturday 19th November 2011, Huddersfield South Khuddam were blessed by having the opportunity to hold a Qur’an Exhibition at Huddersfield Saturday market. This was an excellent opportunity to explain the true teachings of Islam and the Holy Qur’an and to show to people that Islam is all about peace and love and not about war and hatred. The Holy Qur’an has been translated into many

When they arrived they had to rent a stall from the market office. The total cost of the stall was £29. When all the paper work was complete we were able to set up our Qur’an Exhibition. A very beautiful exhibition was set up displaying the Holy Qur’an in Arabic with English translation and translations in 60 other languages. Free literature was also available at the exhibition with free volumes of the Review of Religions magazines.
The Qur’an Exhibition received a good positive response from the public and a strong tabligh contact was made and details were taken. Many people visited the exhibition and took free literature. The stall was available until 4pm, during which several Jama’at members took part. I would kindly request that you remember the following Jama’at members in your prayers, may Allah enable them to do more for Islam and Ahmadiyyat. • Mr Fatih ul Haq • Mr Idris Yousaf • Mr Rafeeq Ahmed • Mr Farooq Saddique • Mr Shakeel Yousaf • Mr Sadakat Ahmed

Tabligh — The Minimum Wage? By Tahir Abdullah Hagura
T
his humble one is neither a writer nor a scholar, but my dear friend, Waseem Syed Sahib, persuaded me to write something about the Tabligh efforts of the Philadelphia Jama’at. Submitting to his kind advice, I'll make a sincere attempt. Please pardon my casual way of expressing my thoughts without regard to formalities. The importance of Tabligh has always been stressed by all divine leaders. Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih IV [rh] was of the opinion that,” Tabligh should be of the highest priority in our lives”. This same concept has been reiterated by our current beloved Hazrat Khalifatul Massih V [atba] in his Khilafat Jubilee Pldege. By the Grace of Allah Tallah, the Philadelphia Jama’at has the opportunity to set up a regular Mobile Tabligh Unit at Temple University Campus. We have done this almost every Saturday for quite some time now. This University is well-known not only in America but also worldwide for teaching all kinds of subjects, including Health Care. We have found Saturday to be perfectly suited for our activity. It seems that the students as well as the general public are in a more relaxed mood on this day. We meet students from a variety of foreign countries, as well as from all over the United States. Our Mobile Unit is very well positioned, with the public transit station right next to us; people from all walks of life are able to benefit. As this is the time for Jihad with knowledge, the student environment provides us with an excellent opportunity to spread the message of the Promised Messiah [as]. [alhamd] Allah Tallah, out of His Infinite Kindness, Mercy and Blessings, has shown us numerous inspiring signs highlighting the importance and value of Tabligh. On one occasion, before our routine Saturday outing, brother
Abu Haroon Sahib, met this humble one after Jumu’ah prayer in the Nasir Mosque, Philadelphia. After shaking hands, he asked whether there were any plans to go out for Tabligh the following morning. I replied in the affirmative and in an attempt to encourage him to join us, I added the comments “Please join us, this is the highest paid wage activity of the Jama’at”. Abu Haroon Sahib smiled excitedly and conveyed a warm and genuine look, as if to ask,—HOW MUCH? At that moment, I felt helpless to satisfy his obvious curiosity regarding, HOW MUCH? Feeling as if my chest was tightened, nothing was coming to my lips. My heart started pounding and cried out: “Answer him…Say something…” But What? Despite my desire, I couldn't find any words. The conversation ended with an uncomfortable silence. Helpless, I turned my attention towards Allah Tallah seeking His help to answer the query of my brother in the hope that he would join us. Allah Tallah out of His Infinite Mercy seemed to feel my concern and that evening, my grandson, Usman bin Affan, who just turned 7, came running to me saying, “Dada Abu (Grandfather), Dada Abu, I’ll be coming to the trailer for Tabligh tomorrow.” I felt some relief at his remarks. The next morning, as usual we set up our Mobile Tabligh Unit at the campus. A student came to the setup and enquired about Ahmadiyyat from one of our brothers, Dr. Khalil Malik Sahib. After some discussion, Khalil Malik Sahib recommended the book, ‘Welcome to Ahmadiyyat’ which the student accepted graciously and promised to study the message, [alhamd]. Upon further inquiry, Dr. Malik Sahib brought the guest to the trailer where I was sitting with some other members of the Jama’at including my grandson, Usman bin Affan. I offered a seat to the guest which he accepted and we engaged in conversation over a cup of tea.
After a brief introduction I expressed my delight that he had already accepted a book recommended by our friend; but now wished to make my own recommendation. I suggested the book titled, Revelation, Rationality, Knowledge and Truth, written by our 4th Caliph, Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad [rh]. Whilst I expanded on the different features of the book, my grandson who was sitting on a counter next to us and listening to our conversation, tried to get my attention by tapping my arm. “ Yes, Usman what can I do for you?” I asked. He responded with excitement, “Dada Abu, Dada Abu (Grand Father) I also want to recommend a book to the guest.” I looked at his face wondering, what book could a 7 year old boy recommend to this guest? Anyway, I introduced my grandson Usman Bin Affan to our guest, whose face lit up when turning to speak to him. Usman got up and came face to face with our guest and said, “I would also like to recommend to you a book!” Our guest asked: “What book would you like me to read?” Usman replied, “Stories from Early Islam, I have read the whole book myself." Usman emphasized the words ‘whole’ and ‘myself ’. The Guest asked Usman, “What is this book about?” Usman replied, “It’s about the wars that happened in the beginning of Islamic History, when the Holy Prophet [saw] was the commander himself.” Upon hearing this, the guest was very happy and told Usman, “Look, I’m going to buy the book that Dr. Khalil recommended as well as the book your grandfather is recommending and I’m also going to buy the one you’re recommending”. Usman smiled with happiness and ran outside to his father in order to find the book. After a few moments, he came back looking unhappy and said, “Dada Abu! We don’t have that book in stock.” I was initially surprised to hear this, but then I thought; how can it be possible that Allah not only inspired Usman with the desire ( Jazbah) and courage to address a Tariq Magazine June 2012

stranger, but also blessed him with the memory of the book title and yet the book is out of stock? I said to myself: “This book has got to be here somewhere!” I told Usman to go back and tell his father to look once again and I asked Madeel, his uncle, to also help him find the book. A few minutes later he came back smiling, with the book in his hand and proudly presented it to our guest. [alhamd], our guest bought a total of 4 books that day. A little later, I saw some money in the hands of my grandson, Usman. Wondering where it came from, I asked him, “Beta what’s that money in your hands?” Usman’s father, Affan, quickly responded, “Abu! the guest, who purchased the books a little while ago, also presented this money to Usman as a gift.” He was so impressed with Usman’s enthusiasm for the book that he awarded him with this gracious gift, [alhamd]. By the Grace of Allah, Usman made his first successful attempt in the field of Tabligh. The guest presented him with an amazing gift of $ 60.00 in cash! Coincidently, Abu Haroon Sahib, who met me the day before in the mosque, was also present, which reminded me of our

conversation regarding ‘how much one gets paid for Tabligh?’ This seemed a very appropriate answer to this question. While I could not find words to answer himl; Allah Tallah manifested this little example. In the State Of Pennsylvania, the minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. Upon first calculation, it seemed that Usman was compensated 10 times more than the minimum wage. In reality Usman spent only 5 minutes in this endeavor which means that he was compensated at the rate of $ 720.00 per hour, which is equivalent to almost 100 times more than the current minimum wage! So, Allah Tallah out of His Graciousness gave us some idea of the possible ‘minimum wage’ for performing Tabligh. But, as we all know, the true treasures and compensation for inviting people to Islam are unlimited and much more valuable than money. Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-Alameen

Press Release - New Mosque Opened by World Muslim Leader in Manchester Note: Ahmadiyya international press and media team takes full responsibility for any errors or miscommunication in this synopsis of the press release
T
he Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat is pleased to announce that on 27 April 2012, its world leader, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad [atba], the Fifth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, inaugurated the new Darul Amaan Mosque in the City of Manchester, United Kingdom. This was the sixth new Mosque inaugurated by His Holiness in the United Kingdom in 2012. The Mosque was opened when His Holiness led the Friday Sermon, which was broadcast globally on MTA International. During his sermon, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad [atba] reminded the worshippers that it was not enough simply to build a Mosque, but that it ought to be filled with sincere worshippers of God Almighty. Later in the day, His Holiness held a private meeting with local dignitaries. Thereafter an official reception to mark the opening of the Mosque was held at the Mosque premises, which was attended by dignitaries and guests from various backgrounds. In his welcome address, Dr Naseer Choudhry, the Regional President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat informed that the Mosque could hold up to 2,000 worshippers. He added that the Mosque was entirely funded by members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat. Councillor Harry Lyons, the Lord Mayor of Manchester, said he was delighted that the Mosque had been situated at a site which was only a few hundred metres from where he had been born and brought up. He said that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat had the ‘ full support of the Manchester City Council’ . Tony Lloyd, MP for Manchester Central, said he had a long standing relationship with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat. He said that under the leadership of Hadhrat
Mirza Masroor Ahmad [atba], Ahmadi Muslims constantly displayed values of love and peace. Kate Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston, said the new Mosque was a ‘beautiful’ addition to Manchester and she congratulated the Ahmadiyya Community on the inauguration of Darul Amaan. Sir Gerald Kaufman, MP for Manchester Gorton, said that though he had been a Member of Parliament for forty-two years, attending the opening of the Darul Amaan Mosque ranked amongst his personal highlights. He concluded by saying that he prayed ‘that God continues to smile upon your Community’. John Leech, MP for Manchester Withington, said the new Mosque stood as a ‘beacon’ amongst all the other buildings in the area and was a wonderful addition to the landscape. He congratulated the Community for having raised the funds for the Mosque on its own and in such a quick time. The highlight of the evening was the keynote address given by Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, in which he outlined the true objectives of a Mosque in Islam. He also used his address to promote inter-faith harmony and integration between people of all backgrounds. His Holiness said that people generally limited themselves to the company of people of similar interests and backgrounds but that it was essential that people of all backgrounds came together so that a unified society could be built. His Holiness said:“It is a source of great pleasure to me that Ahmadi Muslims do not remain hidden away and isolated, but in fact endeavour to form relations with all segments of society and make efforts to integrate and interact with people from all walks of life. And certainly this ought to be
the hallmark of every true Ahmadi Muslim.” Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad [atba] said that in the West the majority of people held a fear of Islam and of Mosques in general. He said that people had no need to fear true Mosques because they were a place to worship God and to encourage all people to serve humanity and to act with justice. His Holiness said: “How can it be, that a person whose life is governed by the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and whose sole aim is to acquire God’s pleasure, that he could ever cause any form of disorder or strife in society? And furthermore, how can it be that in a Mosque a Muslim learns to usurp the rights of other people? This could never happen because it directly contravenes the teachings of Islam.” His Holiness used his address to reassure all those in attendance that Ahmadi Mosques were true Mosques and thus were a place of safety and peace. His Holiness said: “It is with complete conviction and confidence that I say to all of you that the only message that that you will ever hear from an Ahmadi Mosque is a call urging people towards God Almighty, and a call to fulfil the rights of God’s Creation.” His Holiness concluded by stating that the name of the Mosque he was inaugurating actually meant a ‘place of peace and security’ and thus it would be a means of protection not just for those who enter it but those who surround it. His Holiness said:“Certainly, the local people of this area will find that all Ahmadis will always remain at the forefront of every effort that is made towards transforming hatred and enmity into love and peace. Thus I hope and very much expect that this mosque will become a symbol of peace and a beacon of light not just in the local area but for the entire city and indeed the wider world.” Tariq Magazine June 2012

Obituary — Basil Ahmed
I
t is with great sadness that we inform the Jama’at of the untimely passing of Basil Ahmed, son of respected Ahmed Khan Sahib, who returned to his Lord at the tender age of just 20, following a lengthy battle with cancer. In January 2010 Basil was diagnosed with cancer and after overcoming the initial shock he began a long and valiant battle, trying to overcome his illness. Basil was born in Rabwah and lived there until the age of 16. He was a member of the blessed Waqf-e-Nau scheme and was a Hafiz-e-Qur’an, having committed the Qur’an to memory at the age of 10. His friends from Pakistan still remember him for his reciting of Darood before Fajr and Ishaa prayers from a very young age. In 2008 Ahmed Khan Sahib moved with his family to Manchester, England. While here Basil studied at college and had hoped to go to university. Upon being diagnosed with cancer the initial prognosis was promising and despite undergoing regular chemotherapy, Basil remained in good spirits, affecting a
24
Tariq Magazine June 2012
real improvement in his health. Having completed 2 courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, in March 2011, Basil was told by oncologists that his cancer had been completely eradicated. Everyone was overjoyed at this news not least he himself and his close friends and family. This happiness was terribly short lived however. By August, Basil’s cancer had returned, only this time in numerous different areas of his body. Basil again began to fight but the will of Allah had decreed that, this time, the cancer would not go. Despite the prayers of the whole Jama’at and Basil’s own will power and personal strength he returned to his maker on the 12th of January 2012. Such was his devotion to the Jama’at, that just 6 days before his passing and despite being very weak, Basil paid his Khuddam Chanda. On the last occasion he spoke to the Regional Missionary, North West, Basil very boldly stated, “I am not afraid of death, I just wish to do some work for the Jama’at before I die” Our brother was a great friend to many and his simplicity, loving nature and beautiful smile will be missed by all. This obituary gives just a small glimpse into
a personality that will remain with any who knew him for the rest of their lives. We pray that Allah grants Basil a lofty status in Paradise and that his family, his mother, father and 6 sisters, find the strength and steadfastness to bear this great loss. [ameen].

Obituary — Sheikh Musawar Ahmad
S
heikh Musawar Ahmad who passed away on 14 February 2012 at the age of 25 years, inna lillah he wa inna illai hayrajeoon, can be remembered as an adorable son, brother and friend, a highly intelligent and devout muslim who was regular in his Salat, a keen traveller and someone who always wore a smile on his face. Musawar was an ordinary person, faced with extraordinary challenges. However, he was full of wit, humble and modest in his conduct and approach to life’s challenges. A life truly following the teachings of Islam, never wanting to highlight his achievements nor wanting to burden others with complaints. A brave and angelic young man, who had utmost faith in Allah, from whom he came and to whom he has returned. Born in Samanabad, Lahore in Pakistan on 16 January 1987, Musawar was the second son gifted by Allah’s grace to Sheikh Naseer Ahmad sahib (grandson of the late Sheikh Muhammad Din sahib—Retired Mukhtar e Aam) and Nasra Ahmad sahiba (paternal granddaughter of the late Muhammad Asghar Lone sahib). Musawar was two and half years younger than his brother Sheikh Mansoor Ahmad. The first few years of Musawar’s life were spent living in Samanabad in the company of his paternal grandparents, Sheikh Bashir Ahmad sahib and the late Samina Bashir sahiba. Musawar and the family also spent time living in Rawalpindi. This was the location of Musawar’s earliest childhood memory where he used to recall riding on a tricycle being pedalled by his brother. In 1990, the family relocated to England, settling in Gillingham in Kent, where Musawar’s maternal grandparents Mubarak Salim Lone sahib and Mansura Lone sahiba (daughter of the late Hadhrat Sheikh Mubarak Ahmad sahib, former Amir and Missionary in charge East Africa, UK and USA) resided. The move was as a result of advice from senior physicians in Pakistan, who gave the initial diagnosis for both Mansoor and
Musawar of having a condition called Muscular Dystrophy. They emphasised that it would be in the best interest of the family to relocate to England, where the boys would have a far better opportunity to live life to its fullest and have access to appropriate physicians to cater for their wellbeing. It was clear from an early age that, by Allah’s grace, Musawar was highly intelligent exemplified by the speed with which he would learn and comprehend things both through his secular and religious education. Whilst both parent’s used to be teaching things to Mansoor (either Salat or Chapter’s of the Holy Quran etc) Musawar would be listening and learning indirectly, and would then start correcting any mistakes his elder brother made. This consciousness to detail was to become a core competence of Musawar’s throughout his life, whilst at school, university and his work (both professionally and for the Jamaat). Musawar was educated in mainstream schools throughout his years of study. Initially attending Twydall Infants & Juniors where Musawar spent time from pre-school to year six at which point he passed his 11+ examinations to attend the
grammar school, Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School of Rochester. Here he would join his brother and a number of other local Gillingham Jamaat boys. Coming from Pakistan with the challenges faced still fresh in the minds of the young parents, both were anxious and nervous about how their sons would cope when attending Twydall School. However, with Allah’s grace, these concerns were fast quelled as both Mansoor and Musawar integrated into the environment seamlessly with teachers being full of praise at the diligence to their studies and the personalities of both individuals. Musawar was consistently an ‘A’ grade achieving student in his education, resulting in him achieving 2 A's and 8 A’s for his GCSEs; 3 A’s in his A-Levels for Maths, Physics and Economics; and 1 'A' in AS Level ICT. He was naturally very bright, and always required minimal study time when revising, a lot less than his elder brother. It was for his A-Level results that Musawar, by the grace of Allah, received his first of two gold medals from Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih V [atba] at the Jalsa Salana UK in 2005. Tariq Magazine June 2012

News & Events Following school Musawar went onto study for a BSc in Economics at University College London (UCL), at the conclusion of which, by Allah’s grace, Musawar was nominated for and won the Xcel Student of the Year for Social Sciences award in 2008, which included a substantial cash prize. During the time at University, Musawar and his father moved to London to allow Musawar the best opportunity to excel in his studies, whilst Mansoor and their mother remained at the home in Gillingham. At University, Musawar quickly became known as the ‘go-to guy’ as fellow students would rally around him for his help and guidance relating to their courses in particular during revision phase for exams, as well as seek his advice on careers and CV writing. This sacrifice of Musawar’s time and his willingness to share knowledge with others continued whilst on his Masters course at CASS Business School, where he achieved an MSc with Distinction in ‘Mathematical Trading and Finance’, for which Musawar, by Allah’s grace, was privileged to have been awarded a second Gold Medal from Hadhur Aqdas [atba] at the 2010 Jalsa Salana UK. The following extract of condolence from a former class fellow typifies the impact Musawar had and the impression he left: “ …We met in my first year of university at UCL, we have been friends ever since. Not only has he been a true inspiration to me, he was and always will be the smart, talented and charismatic friend I remember…You achieved and taught me so much in such a short time. You were always there for me, especially through some of my difficult university days where I struggled. Your wisdom and guidance pushed and helped me get to where I am today. I am so thankful to have been in the presence of such a true legend. You will never be forgotten.” Although there was a focus on Musawar’s secular education, both parents gave as much, if not more, emphasis to Musawar’s religious education and moral upbringing, which became the foundation of Musawar’s humble and pious character. Musawar’s love for the Jamaat was evident through the close link he kept with the local, regional and national Jamaat. He was a regular attendee at Atfal and Khuddam Ijtema’s throughout his life, in his capacity as
26
Tariq Magazine June 2012
a participant in the competitions and also as a volunteer assisting with the Atfal. Musawar had a great affinity with children and always enjoyed the company of not only the Atfal but also his young cousins for whom he would make plans to go sightseeing, play games or dine out, always showing great compassion and patience whilst entertaining them. Musawar showed such respect in equal measure to his elders too. His kindness towards his parents and grandparents knew no bounds, once he began earning he would regularly give portions of his income to both maternal and paternal grandparents as well as look after the needs of the household. Musawar’s relationship with the Jamaat was also strengthened through his unparalleled regularity at the Saturday Children’s Class, which he attended since its inception by Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih IV (RA) in 1993, which was televised on MTA. Both brothers were fortunate to be the recipients of Allah’s blessings and the prayers of Hadhur (RA), as on entering and leaving the class, Hadhur (RA) would often come and greet them both. Musawar’s active participation at Ijtemas and the Children’s Class (where he delivered extempore & written speeches, Nazm and Tilawats) led him to develop his oratory and public speaking ability which stood him in good stead whilst attending University and subsequently in his Investment Banking career. In addition to the participation at ijtemas and classes, Musawar was also active in aptly carrying out and never shying away from Jamaat duties entrusted to him alongside his commitments of school, university and work. Musawar at the time of his demise was the Mohasib for Gillingham Jamaat, Mohtamid for Gillingham MKA and a Charity Representative for Humanity First. Previous roles included being the Gillingham MKA Amoor-e-tuluba secretary and the President of the UCL AMYA where Musawar arranged and led Jummah prayers and also arranged regular social events for the Khuddam at the wider University of London network. Musawar was an individual with great self-discipline. This was apparent through his consistency during Ramadhan, as he would fast for the full month since the age of about 12 years.
Those close to Musawar would have often seen him with a football at his feet dribbling the ball around at home or whilst at his University dormitory. Musawar was a keen snooker and table tennis player and recently braved the adventures of scuba diving. He also enjoyed sports that displayed a competitive nature, skill, involved strategy, and flair, such as American football, cricket, rugby, tennis, with football being the one he was most passionate about, in particular his favourite team Tottenham Hotspurs. At the age of 6, when Musawar began using a wheelchair, he would come home from school dismayed and question why he could not run and play football like the other children. In response the family emphasized to Musawar that he must stay happy with whatever Allah had willed, and that he should make the most of the given situation. Since then Musawar was contented and demonstrated the attributes required on a sports pitch throughout his professional field of Economics and Investment Banking and his life. Musawar’s career path began when he secured an internship whilst in the penultimate year of University, at the world’s pre-eminent Investment Bank Goldman Sachs, working on the Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities Trading desk. Following his Master’s, Musawar obtained a three month internship at Barclays Investment Bank as an Analyst in the Index Strategies team, a team full of highly intellectual mathematically proficient individuals, building new complicated financial products. He would be based at the Canary Wharf office in London, where he would commute to by train from Gillingham daily, becoming a familiar face at London train stations, ensuring he maintained his high regard for punctuality. Within a few weeks of the internship, Musawar’s manager, excited at Musawar’s prospects and potential told him that they would be offering a permanent position to start straight after his internship, which Musawar graciously accepted. One of Musawar’s Managing Director’s (MD’s) recalled the excitement of this manager, which the MD claimed he was quick to discount. However, the MD went on to say that:
News & Events “…my cautiousness turned into amazement the first time I saw Musawar in action; I thought it would be a little risky to let this young colleague give a presentation in a room full of senior people, but then Musawar calmly went to the podium and gave confidently one of the best presentations I have ever seen.” Here at Barclays, like at University, Musawar became the ‘go-to guy’, as colleagues, including his superiors, began to seek his counsel on numerous things in addition to his mathematical and financial expertise, citing him as an individual operating far beyond his tenure and referring to him as the ‘editor in-chief ’ due to his consciousness to detail. After Musawar’s funeral, which was attended by many of Musawar’s University and school fellows, and Barclays colleagues, Musawar’s MDs at Barclays arranged a unique event at their Canary Wharf Headquarters, to share their thoughts of Musawar with his family including presenting a book with a compilation of condolences and memories that colleagues had of Musawar from around the world including London, New York, Europe and Singapore. It was apparent at the event that, Musawar, affectionately known to some as Sevi, had touched many peoples’ hearts, including not only those of us who knew him since birth, but also those who had only conversed with him for a matter of minutes and those who had only communicated infrequently via video calls as part of his work. Even on vacation overseas, he would make time to visit family, the local Mosques and Jamaat Mission Houses and also the Barclays Offices to physically meet those who he dealt with whilst in London. Recently on tour of Malaysia and Singapore, Musawar visited the Barclays office in Singapore as well as the Jamaat mission there and in Kuala Lumpur. The event at Barclays was attended by thirty or so colleagues, including two of Musawar’s MDs flying in from New York, as well as the Global Head of Research joining via videoconference from New York. The Global Head commented, “…There are over 900
people in my research group, spanning every region of the world, and Musawar stood out. Interestingly, he did not stand out because of his disability, and that made him even more special. Musawar was a rising star in this vast and toprated research department, which made him among the very top young finance professionals in the entire financial services industry. After only two years in the business, Musawar already appeared in the firm’s highlights for contributing to a notable transaction an extraordinary accomplishment. He was also promoted to assistant Vice President in a minimum amount of time, recognition of his rapid progress.” Through interaction with Musawar’s colleagues, who were akin to his extended family, it became evident by the grace of Allah, that he had planted the seed of Islam and the Jamaat, as amongst other things they were aware of Musawar’s relationship with his community, the Jalsa Salana and Musawar’s fundraising initiatives for the Jamaat and Humanity First for which he had raised substantial amounts over several years, most notably raising over £5,000 for the 2010 Charity Challenge, making him one of the highest fundraisers that year. His services for Humanity First not only generated significant income for the charity but his warmth and happiness inspired many visitors and colleagues alike. As a result of the positive impact Musawar created at Barclays, the inspiration and contribution he provided; and to continue his legacy, the Bank are due to name an award in memory of Musawar to be given to a deserving candidate at the Bank annually. Musawar did not just inform colleagues about Islam through his conversations, but more so through his actions and character, which was noted by another one of Musawar’s MD’s, who was a nonAhmadi Muslim and used to occasionally offer prayers led by Musawar including Jummah at their respective times. The MD mentioned that, “As someone who shared his faith, I can truly cite him as a great example of a Muslim.” He further stated, “Musawar faced many difficulties, but this was far from being what defined him. It’s true that my first reaction was one of naive surprise that someone with his disabilities could overcome
them to achieve so much, so young… We all quickly realised that the real source of our surprise and admiration were his defining qualities—his impressive abilities, dignified, polite, diligent, kind, respectful, unassuming, fiercely intelligent, humble, mature, pious and patient. He has all those things and more... I worry that we took from him more than we gave. But he was so generous he enjoyed giving to others – to us.” After attending Musawar’s Funeral at Baitul Futuh, Musawar’s colleagues commented that they could see where Musawar had developed such unique attributes from, as these clearly shone through the family and community that greeted them all. Musawar was fortunate enough to have had his funeral prayers led by Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih V [atba] on Friday 17th February 2012 at Baitul-Futuh Mosque following Jummah prayers during which Hadhur Aqdas [atba] gave a brief background on Musawar in Urdu, translated as follows: “…Despite his Musawar’s physical disability, he had the opportunity to serve Gillingham Jamaat in various posts. All work designated to Musawar would be executed with utmost diligence and responsibility. Musawar although wheelchair bound, he would carry out his work with great efficiency, effort and competence. He fully participated in Jamaat chandajaat and all other schemes. A pious individual attached to his faith, having a special link with Khilafat. He was a sincere, proficient and intelligent human being. Despite his physical disability, he completed his education and worked in a Bank. Whilst there he progressed to Assistant Vice President, with all his superiors being very happy with his work…” Hadhur Aqdas [atba] concluded by saying, “…May Allah grant the departed forgiveness and provide him with his choicest place in paradise; and grant his family, parents and brother with admirable patience.” Musawar was then laid to rest the following day at the Moosian section in Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey.

Press Release — The Persecution of Ahmadis in 2011 Annual Report
Note: Ahmadiyya international press and media team takes full responsibility for any errors or miscommunication in this synopsis of the press release
R
abwah (Press Release): Jama'at Ahmadiyya Pakistan has released the persecution of Ahmadis in Pakistan report for 2011. The spokes person for Jama'at Ahmadiyya Pakistan Mr. Saleem ud Din said "there was an open hate campaign against Ahmadis in Pakistan and young children studying in nursery grade classes were not even spared from this horrific discrimination and hatred". Six Ahmadis lost their lives because of the fact that they were Ahmadis and more than 20 were targets of assassination attempts. Mr. Saleem ud Din also informed that hate filled posters; stickers, fliers and calendars were openly distributed across Pakistan. He specifically mentioned the hate campaigns faced by the Ahmadis in Faisalabad where fliers and leaflets were openly distributed calling anyone to kill Ahmadis in open. The government and security agencies failed to take any concrete action against such actions. Punishing the culprits behind these leaflets and hate material is a far cry. The extremists have increased efforts to isolate the community and the campaign to encourage people to boycott Ahmadis and Ahmadi products was also a major issue. Expelling children from educational institutions also increased where young kids studying in nursery level classes were not spared. Ahmadis children faced expulsion from schools or outright refusal by the educational institutions to admit them. The government seemed to succumb under the pressure from extremists and decided to look other way while these acts of hate and terror were carried out. All the acts perpetrated after the 1984 Anti Ahmadiyya Ordinance are against the fundamentals of the constitution of Pakistan. The post 1984 era for Ahmadis is marked by an increasingly difficult period for Ahmadis. Mr. Saleem ud Din urged the government to consider these Ahmadiyya specific laws and ensure that Ahmadis in Pakistan are given equal rights as any other citizen. Ahmadis are

facing legal, social, cultural and political discrimination because of these laws and these are against the very base of our society where equal rights of individual are prime. Mr. Saleem ud Din said "there has been 210 deaths after the imposition of these discriminatory laws in 1984, 254 assassination attempts on various Ahmadis, 23 Ahmadi places of worship were demolished and 28 were sealed by the administration. 16 places of worship were forcefully taken over, 29 graves of deceased Ahmadis were opened and desecrated and 57 Ahmadis were refused burial in common graveyard. Mr. Saleem ud Din further added that during 2011 Ahmadis were not allowed to build place of worship anywhere in Pakistan. At many places police forcefully stopped the construction of places of worship. As a matter of fact according to the constitution of Pakistan every citizen is free to practice their faith and build their places of worship. Just because of prejudice Ahmadi businesses are targeted and Ahmadi officials in government and private sector are victimised. According to Saleem ud Din in 2011 as well, Ahmadis were not allowed to hold any convention in their centre Rabwah, where 95% population belongs to Ahmadiyya community. Sports events were not spared either and the community was not allowed to hold any type of sports events openly. On the other hand those against the Jama'at Ahmadiyya were given a free hand to hold rallies whenever, wherever and however they want. They were also given a free hand to abuse and slander revered Ahmadi figures. The spokes person of Jama'at Ahmadiyya Pakistan called upon the moderate and conscious circles of Pakistani community to urge the government to take affective measures to curtail the prejudice on the basis of faith so that Pakistan could be rid of sectarianism and prejudice and Pakistan could become a prosperous and peaceful country.

Jesus In India — From the Crucifixion to Kashmir By Arif Khan, Ishaat Team MKA UK

y Lord! My Lord! Why hast thou forsaken me?
“Jesus quoted this Psalm in order to draw attention to it and the fact that He was fulfilling it there on the cross. Consider verses 11-18 in Psalm 22:” (Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry) Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. 11
Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. 12
They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. 13
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. 14
My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. 15
For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. 16
I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. 17
They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. 18
But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. 19
Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. 20
Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. 21

The Martyrdom of Master Abdul Qudoos Shaheed [rh] By Adam Walker, Mauvin Sadr MKA UK
T
hose to whom men said, ‘People have mustered against you, therefore fear them,’ but this only increased their faith, and they said, ‘Sufficient for us is Allah, and an excellent Guardian is He.’ (Qur’an. 170-174) These are the words which embody within them the heroic story of Master Abdul Qudoos of Rabwah, Pakistan; a man who in the face of a great tyrant held onto, with life and limb, the words: ‘‘Sufficient for us is Allah.” Abdul Qudoos Abdul Qudoos heralded from a pious family which had the blessing of fulfilling a great Prophetic command by accepting the Imam Mahdi at his very own blessed hand through Abdul Qudoos’ grandfather who was a Companion of Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad [as]. His blessed grandmother, a Companion herself, also had the great distinction of offering her Bay’ah to the Imam Mahdi [as]. He was married to a pious wife who bore him three sons, aged 14, 13 and 5, and a daughter who is 10 years old. Born in 1968, Abdul Qudoos was an educator by profession and the President of his local Ahmadi Muslim community. His peers noted that he was a distinguished and praiseworthy man due to several of his noble qualities. He was hardworking, honest, very courteous and extra-ordinarily courageous. He had a great command over his temperament which, as we will come to know, could not be agitated by even the fiercest encounters. Most of all, he was a man who invested his time serving his family and local community as best he could. Noted for his excellent ability to swim, he was always the first to try and save the members of his local community, be they Ahmadi or not, who had accidents in the river. Commenting on him, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad [atba],

who had observed his qualities first hand in Rabwah, lovingly stated ”He was a personification of obedience…” Martyrdom This heroic story begins some six months before the great martydom took place. A man in Abdul Qudoos’ local area had been murdered for which the police arrested seveal suspects who were each released without charge. At the behest of the murdered man’s son, and some months later, Abdul Qudoos, President of the local Ahmadi chapter, was escorted to his local police station to be questioned by the police about the murder. On 10th February 2012 the police arrested Abdul Qudoos for the murder despite having no grounds on which to do so. They did not even register the fact that he had been arrested. The corruption of the police was compounded when they openly admitted, even at this early stage, that they knew he was an innocent man.
was initially kept. The objective of his captors quickly became clear; they wanted him to falsely testify, in writing, that the senior members of the Ahmadi Muslim Community had perpetrated the murder for which he was himself falsely arrested. This would give them free license to falsely and corruptly arrest the Ahmadi hierarchy and strike a serious blow against the Community in Pakistan. The situation was made all the more tense by that fact that his captors were not ordinary street criminals, but high ranking members of the police force who took great pleasure in telling Abdul Qudoos that this was the first time they had captured an office bearer of the Community and that they would torture him.
Abdul Qudoos was finally released by his captors with his body battered and bruised. He was immediately taken to a local hospital where he himself recounted what had transpired during those dark ten days.
Abdul Qudoos, firm in his faith, refused to betray his faith by signing any document or making false statements. They again insisted that he make the false allegation to which he again courageously refused. The tyrants then threw him to the ground and mercilessly beat him, continuously demanding that he complied. These foul hypocrites then became enraged by the strength of faith and resolve displayed by Abdul Qudoos and so they spent the next day inflicting extreme torture upon him. This included beating him whilst hung upside down by his ankles, striking him with dozens of blows at a time and a number of tyrants pinning him to the ground as another would roll a large and heavy wooden roller over his body. He was also subjected to psychological torture through severe sleep deprivation. He would be allowed to periodically doze off at which point his captors would immediately beat him again. If this brutality was not enough to quench their thirst, when his body could take little more beating they would treat his wounds only so that they could again begin his torture sessions.
He related that the police took him in the shadows of the night to a location about five hours drive from where he
The brave Abdul Qudoos recounted that on account of the fact that he did not feel he could withstand the brutality
Nevertheless, the executioners had made up their minds. Later, in mid March, and a month after his arrest, the so called police, his captors and tyrants, marched Abdul Qudoos to a grim location. He was kept their for ten days where he was tortured mercilessly. The tyrants, hypocrites of Islam, thought that they could share in God’s power, but they did not realise that while bones can be crushed and skin pierced, the faith (Iman) and inner strength (‘Izzat) of a true believer (mu’min) cannot be dismantled.
News & Events
of his torture, he earnestly prayed that Almighty Allah would give him the strength to withstand it. His prayers where answered to such a degree that he said the pain endured when his bones and internal organs were being crushed could not compare to the pain he felt when his captors would insult his beloved Imam of the Age, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad [as], and the noble Ahmadi Caliphs. Following a month and a half in prison, no charges and ten days of severe torture, the tyrants finally released Abdul Qudoos into the care of a friend who immediately took him to a local hospital. He had lost a great deal of blood during his ordeal and it was clear that his kidneys and other internal organs had been severely damaged. He was asked in hospital by a representative of the Community if, under the severe torture, he had understandably given in to even some small demand of his captors? In an emotional and charged response, Abdul Qudoos stated that his captors could not even make him write a dot let alone anything of any worth to them. Abdul Qudoos’ dear wife relates that earlier in life her husband may have had a premonition that he would offer his life in the way of Almighty Allah
as he used to say to her that she would later miss him when he was gone. This inevitability became apparent to Abdul Qudoos Sahib when he was in hospital and so on the 29th March 2012 he made a few efforts settle his humble affairs. Turning his bruised and blessed face to his four young children, he offered them the final loving advice of a father to his children: Always remain steadfast and attached to the Institution of Khilafat. Later that day he started vomiting blood which badly affected his lungs. The following day, on 30th March 2012, he left this world and became Master Abdul Qudoos Shahid [rh]: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un Sureley to Allah we belong, and unto Him shall we return Never To Be Forgotten Commenting on the great sacrifice of Abdul Qudoos Shahid [rh], Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad [atba] stated in his Friday sermon on 6th April 2012: ”…this is the tale of one who kept his faith alive and stayed firm on truth. This personification of resolve and courage gave
his life but did not give a false statement. God has declared falsehood tantamount to shirk (associating partners with God) and while this great martyr has given us other lessons, one lesson he gave us and on which the Ahmadiyya Community is based, is not to care for one’s life for the establishment of Tawheed, (Oneness of God).” In the same sermon, the beloved of the Community, the Leader of the Faithful, stated that the sacrifice offered by Abdul Qudoos Shahid [ra] did not amount to an ordinary martyrdom, but is ranked among the high martyrdoms. Paying tribute to him, Huzur [atba] stated: ‘O Qudoos, we pay tribute to you; for you accepted to endure extreme torture but did not let the honour of the Jama’at be slighted. By giving your life you saved the Jama’at from a great tribulation… Fortunate is Qudoos sahib who is called living by God and who has been given a provision which is far more excellent than (any) worldly provision. He will find out the true glad-tiding in the Hereafter. We should always remember the lesson of ‘Sufficient for us is Allah, and an excellent Guardian is He’ that he gave us.

5 Useful Information First AID Taken from wiki
B
asic first aid refers to the initial process of assessing and addressing the needs of someone who has been injured or is in physiological distress due to choking, a heart attack, allergic reactions, drugs or alcohol or other medical emergencies. Basic first aid allows you to quickly determine a person's physical condition and the correct course of treatment. You should always seek professional medical help as soon as you are able, but following correct first aid procedures can be the difference between life and death. Note: Much of this article deals with first aid for life threatening situations in which the victim is unresponsive. Many of these steps will not apply in situations where you already know the problem or the extent of the harm to a person. In that case, you should search for the specific article, or skim this one to find more information on addressing particular conditions.
Steps
• Circulation—Does the person show a pulse at major pulse points (wrist, carotid artery, groin)? 3. Avoid moving the victim. Avoid moving the victim unless they are in immediate danger. Moving a victim will often make injuries worse, especially in the case of spinal cord injuries.(2) 4. Call Emergency Services. Call for help or tell someone else (a specific person, if possible) to call for help as soon as possible. If you are the only person on the scene, try to establish breathing before calling for help, and do not leave the victim alone for an extensive amount of time. 5. Determine responsiveness. If a person is unconscious, try to rouse them by gently shaking and speaking to them. 6. If the person remains unresponsive, carefully roll them onto their back and open his airway.(1)
1. Evaluate the situation. Are there things that might put you at risk of harm? Are you or the victim threatened by fire, toxic smoke or gasses, an unstable building, live electrical wires or other dangerous
• Keep head and neck aligned.
If approaching the victim will endanger your life, seek professional help immediately; they have higher levels of training and know how to handle these situations.
7. Look, listen and feel for signs of breathing. Look for the victim's chest to rise and fall, listen for sounds of breathing (place your ear near the nose and mouth, and feel for breath on your cheek.
2. Remember your A,B,Cs. The A,B,Cs of first aid refer to the three critical things you need to look for.(1) • Airway—Does the person have an unobstructed airway? • Breathing—Is the person breathing?
34
Tariq Magazine June 2012
• Carefully roll them onto their back while holding his head. • Open the airway by lifting the chin.
• If the victim is not breathing, see the section below. • If the victim is breathing, but unconscious, roll them onto their side, keeping the head and neck aligned with the body. This will help drain the mouth and prevent the tongue or
vomit from blocking the airway. 8. Check the victim's circulation. Look at the victim's color and check their pulse (the carotid artery is a good option; it is located on either side of the neck, below the jawbone). If the victim does not have a pulse, start CPR.(3) • How to Administer Adult CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) • How to do CPR on a baby 9. Treat bleeding, shock, and other problems as needed. After you have established that the victim is breathing and has a pulse, your next priority should be to control any bleeding. Particularly in the case of trauma, you should take steps to control or prevent shock. Click on any of the linked articles for detailed instructions on how to manage a particular problem. • How to Stop Bleeding—Control of bleeding is one of the most important things you can do to save a trauma victim. Use direct pressure on a wound before trying any other method of managing bleeding. Read the linked article for more detailed steps you can take. • How to Treat Shock—Shock, a loss of blood flow to the body, frequently follows physical and occasionally psychological trauma. A person in shock will frequently have cool, clammy skin, be agitated or have an altered mental status, and have pale color to the skin around the face and lips. Untreated, shock can be fatal. Anyone who has suffered a severe injury or life-threatening situation is at risk for shock. Click on the linked article for information on how to treat shock.
• How to Help a Choking Victim— Choking can cause death or permanent brain damage within minutes. Read this article for ways to help a choking victim. The article addresses helping both children and adult choking victims. • How to Treat a Burn—Treat first and second degree burns by immersing or flushing with cool water (no ice). Don't use creams, butter or other ointments, and do not pop blisters. Third degree burns should be covered with a damp cloth. Remove clothing and jewelry from the burn, but do not try to remove charred clothing that is stuck to burns. • Treat a Concussion—If the victim has suffered a blow to the head, look for signs of concussion. Common symptoms are: loss of consciousness following the injury, disorientation or memory impairment, vertigo, nausea, and lethargy. Read the linked article for the best ways to treat a concussion. • How to Treat a Spinal Injury Victim —If you suspect a spinal injury, it is especially critical that you not move the victim's head, neck or back UNLESS THEY ARE IN IMMEDIATE DANGER. You also need to take special care when performing rescue breathing or CPR. Read this article to learn what to do. • How to Treat a Bullet Wound—Bullet wounds are serious and unpredictable.
Read on for special considerations when treating someone who has suffered a gunshot wound. 10. Stay with the victim until help arrives. Try to be a calming presence for the victim until assistance can arrive.
If the victim is not breathing
Follow these steps to restore breathing in an unconscious victim. These steps assume you have already performed the chin lift described above (see image). 1. Check for a clear airway. Remove any obvious blockage. 2. Cover the victim's mouth with your own. 3. Pinch the victim's nose closed. 4. Attempt to fill victim's lungs with two slow breaths. If the breaths are blocked, reposition the airway. Make sure the head is tilted slightly back and the tongue is not obstructing it. Try again. 5. If breaths are still blocked, give 5 quick, forceful abdominal thrusts. This is the equivalent of the Heimlich Maneuver in a standing person. • Straddle the victim. • Place a fist just above the belly button and below the breastbone.
• Thrust upward to expel air from the lungs. • Sweep the mouth to remove any foreign objects. • Try two slow breaths again. • Repeat until you are successful in clearing the object from the windpipe. 6. With open airway, begin rescue breathing. •
Give one breath every 5 seconds.
•
Check that the chest rises every time.
7. Administer CPR if the victim does not have a pulse. 8. if you don't know how to do CPR then don't try it. wait for the cops
Tips
• As much as this article can cover, you will only learn so much from reading steps on how to do this. As such, try to find training in first aid and/or CPR if at all possible—this gives you, the reader, the ability to learn hands-on exactly how to bind fractures and dislocations, bandage moderate to severe wounds, and even perform CPR, and you will find yourself better prepared for treating those in need after the training. In addition, these certifications also protect you in the event of legal action—while Good Tariq Magazine June 2012
35
Useful Information Samaritan laws will protect you in these cases, certifications simply bolster this. • If possible, use latex gloves or other barriers to protect yourself from others' bodily fluids. • I f a person is impaled on an object, do not remove it unless it is obstructing an airway. Removing the object is likely to cause additional injuries and increase the severity of bleeding. Avoid moving the person. If you must move them, you may shorten and secure the object.(1)
Warnings
• Moving someone with spinal cord damage may increase the likelihood of paralysis or death.
• Do not touch someone who is being shocked by an electrical current. Turn off the power or use a piece of non-conductive material (e.g., wood, dry rope, dry clothing) to separate him from the power source before touching him.(4) • Before touching a victim or rendering any aide, get consent to treat! Check the laws in your area. Rendering aide without consent may lead to legal action. If someone has a "Do not resuscitate" order, respect it. If the person is unconscious and at risk of death or injury, without any known "Do not resuscitate" order, go ahead and treat by implied consent. • Never try and reset a broken or dislocated bone. Remember, this is first aid - if you are doing this,
you are preparing a patient for transport. Unless you are 110% sure of what you are doing, resetting a dislocation or broken bone runs a strong risk of making things worse. • Never, ever put yourself in danger! As much as this seems to lack compasasion, remember that being a hero, in this case, means nothing if you come back dead. • If you aren't sure what to do, leave it to the professionals. If it's not a lifecritical injury, doing the wrong thing can endanger the patient. See the note about training, up above in tips. DONT MOVE THE PERSON. it could harm them even more. Wait for cops

well-stocked first aid kit is a handy thing to have. To be prepared for emergencies, keep a first aid kit in your home and in your car. Carry a first aid kit with you or know where you can find one. Find out the location of first aid kits where you work. First aid kits come in many shapes and sizes. You can purchase one from the Red Cross Store or your local American Red Cross chapter. Your local drug store may sell them. You may also make your own. Some kits are designed for specific activities, such as hiking, camping or boating. Whether you buy a first aid kit or put one together, make sure it has all the items you may need. Include any personal items such as medications and emergency phone numbers or other items your health-care provider may suggest. Check the kit regularly. Make sure the flashlight batteries work. Check expiration dates and replace any used or out-of-date contents. The Red Cross recommends that all first aid kits for a family of four include the following: • 2 absorbent compress dressings (5 x 9 inches) • 25 adhesive bandages (assorted sizes) • 1 adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch) • 5 antibiotic ointment packets (approximately 1 gram) • 5 antiseptic wipe packets • 2 packets of aspirin (81 mg each)

Get Healthy and DevelopFitness By Salman Muzzaffer, MKA UK Tabligh Department
1. Introduction
Allah Almighty has graciously blessed us all with a physical body and a soul. This brief article will deal with the easier aspect, i.e. physical body and how we can all try and improve our physical conditions. Before moving on to the subject, it must be reminded that our physical condition has an impact on our spiritual condition. Thus an instruction has been given to Muslims to regulate their physical health: O children of Adam! look to your adornment at every time and place of worship, and eat and drink but exceed not the bounds; surely, He does not love those who exceed the bounds. (Holy Quran- Ch.7: V.32) “The Holy Quran has laid stress on physical cleanliness and postures, and their regulation in relation to all worship and inner purity and spiritual humility. Reflection confirms that physical conditions deeply affect the soul.” (Hadhrat Messih Maud [as], Philosophy of teachings of Islam, pg8) “Mental and spiritual health is deeply linked to physical health. If you maintain your physical health it will help your mental health. It is not necessary for a spiritually healthy person to be physically fit but if he is, it will certainly help him. Older people have been saying prayers all their life with deep personal attachment yearning for the days when they could say their prayers without getting tired, and gain more pleasure. However, due to ailments in old age they cannot say their prayers with ease as they used to in their younger days. Physical health does help the spiritually strong to do good deeds and worship God.” (Hadhrat Khalifatul Messih IV [rh]) 2. I want to lose weight? In order to lose weight, one must pay attention to both diet and exercise. A combination of both will help to lose weight but maintain muscle which gives the body a better shape.
Simple Diet Plan:
12-1pm – Healthy lunch, lots of salad, meat and a small portion of rice/pasta/noodles A small dessert is fine, e.g. yogurt/ fruit salad/mouse. Fill your stomach with food first an then have a small dessert if you have a sweet tooth. 3-4pm – Fruit or vegetables, apple/orange 6-7pm – Watch what you eat here, there should be minimal carbohydrates. Try and eat more vegetables/meat or anything healthy. 8-9pm – If you feel hungry, have a healthy light snack such as a yogurt/ water with lemon or a fruit 3. I want to gain muscle? For the ones looking to gain muscle mass, different training methods can be used. This should however be done carefully as it can have side effects and cause injuries if not done properly
Few tips:
• Increase compound exercises; e.g. bench press, pull ups and squats. • When lifting, lift explosively • Emphasise the negative; when lowering the weights, do so slowly. • Increase the amount of fish and chicken you eat. • Stop/reduce aerobics as it has a detrimental effect on mass building. Although this should not be done for long periods. • Increase food intake for 3 days and then go back to normal. While increasing your intake, put the muscles under heavy loads.
7-8 am – “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper.”
• Rest, your body actually develops when you are resting. Training everyday will not allow your body to recover.
This means that eat your larger meals early in the day, this will enable your body to have calories to burn throughout the day. A big healthy breakfast will give a good start to the day. Good cereal (weetabix/ Just Right/ Porridge)/ toast/ eggs/ banana/ glass of milk
Although gaining size may be good to some extent, but if overdone, natural athleticism and agility are sacrificed. Hence, as the God Almighty says, keep a balance. In this too, one should keep a balanced training program.
9-10am – Light snack of any fruit, yogurt, cereal bar etc. No junk food
4. I want to reduce fat and look lean? The golden rule to remember is to reduce carbohydrates (pasta, bread, rice, chapattis) and increase protein intake (tuna, cod, chicken, turkey), while also increasing fruit intake so the body Tariq Magazine June 2012

•
This should be done with exercise. While exercising, keep a mixture of aerobics and weight training.
If running, focus on running fast. Sprinting is similar to lifting weights but keeps the body athletic at the same time.
•
5. I want to get Fitter and stronger? To increase fitness, you can try various sports such as running, cycling, and football. Circuit training classes are also an excellent way of increasing fitness. Anything which engages you physically and is fun, go for it! It makes training less boring.
Go to circuit training classes. It will help if you have a training partner so grab one of your friends and get in shape!
I hope this helps. Now all you have to do is to make a decision to train regularly and watch your diet. You will see results much quicker than you might expect.

5  Articles Ahmadiyya Marches On By Imam B.A. Rafiq
M
ajlis Tahafuuz Khatme Nubbuwat UK organised a public meeting in London which had a very poor attendance, in spite of their huge publicity campaign through the Urdu news media. Maulana Fazlur Rehman was invited from Pakistan to address this meeting. There were other speakers also from the UK. In their speeches, the speakers including Maulana Fazlur Rehman, told the audience that Ahmadiyyat will, God forbid, be destroyed by their efforts in the near future. They even asked the British Government to declare Ahmadis as non-Muslims. Let us look back into the past hundred years history of Ahmadiyyat and the opposition of the anti Ahmadiyya maulvis and see on whose side was the hand of God working. We all know that from the very inception of Ahmadiyyat these bigoted maulvis have been trying their best to disrupt the onward march of the Ahmadiyya Movement but they met with utter failure and the march of Ahmadiyyat went forward from strength to strength. Every year hundreds of thousands of new converts join the movement all over the world. The seed of Ahmadiyyat has so far been planted in more than one hundred and fifty countries of the world. Thousands of new mosques are being built by the Jamaat in various countries of the world. Dozens of new Missionary colleges have been opened in Africa, Europe, Canada and Indonesia. Thousands of parents are devoting their newborns for the service of Islam and Ahmadiyyat. Hundreds of new books and magazines are being published all over the world by the Jamaat. Millions of needy and poor people are being helped by HUMANITY FIRST, a social welfare wing of the Jamaat. This help is given to all, irrespective of their religion, race or colour. The Ahmadiyya
Jamaat has opened dozens of hospitals, hundreds of schools and thousands of free Homoeopathic clinics all over the world. Is this the destruction of the Ahmadiyya Movement by the Maulvis in Pakistan? Have they been able to stop the onward march of the Movement? In fact the more they oppose us the stronger we get. They tried to close a few of our mosques in Pakistan forcefully and Allah gave us thousands of mosques all over the world. In spite of their severe opposition and the help of Pakistani officials that they get from them, Ahmadiyyat is marching forward in Pakistan. Every year a large number of their flock are converted to Ahmadiyyat. When I look at their defeat it reminds me of an incident that took place sometime in the early thirties. The All India Ahrar movement had started a campaign in India to wipe out Ahmadiyyat from the face of the earth. Their leaders were boasting in their public speeches that soon Ahmadiyyat will be a legend and there will be none practising it. Large anti-Ahmadiyya public meetings were held all over India and in Qadian also. Many Ahmadis were killed and hundreds of Ahmadi properties were set on fire. When the situation got worse and was getting out of control, some non-Ahmadi dignitaries decided to get the Ahmadi and non-Ahmadi leadership together for discussion to diffuse the situation. A meeting was convened at Lahore, which was attended by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II [ra] and some Ahrar leaders. At the end of the meeting, an Ahrar leader addressing Hazrat Khaliaftul Masih said, that the Ahrars had decided to destroy the Ahmadiyya Movement and that this will be done sooner rather than later. He boasted that no one can stop them from achieving this object and that they would be triumphant in the
end. Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II [ra] replied by saying, that if Ahmadiyyat was a false movement than there was no need for Ahrar to try to destroy it, Allah will never let it prosper as he never let false claimants to flourish. But if Ahmadiyyat had been planted by God Himself, and we believe that it was a God planted tree, then even if the whole world was on the side of Ahrar they would be defeated and all their designs would be frustrated. The meeting ended. Within one year the Ahrar Movement was utterly defeated all over India and it lost public support. Ahmadiyyat was triumphant and gained strength through the introduction of the Tahrik i Jadid scheme which established Ahmadiyya Missions in most countries of the world. How many people are there today who are even familiar with the name of AHRAR, while the Ahmadiyya Movement has developed into a huge tree with its branches extending all over the globe. Millions of people are taking shelter under this blessed tree and enjoy comfortable and blissful life under its shade. I wish these misguided and bigoted maulvis of Pakistan would watch MTA, the Ahmadiyya TV channel and see for themselves the progress and triumphant march of the Jamaat. The question for them to answer is, why is Allah helping Ahmadis and not them? Why are they losing so badly against Ahmadis? In 1882 the small dusty village of Qadian,(India) was an insignificant, sleepy hamlet deep in rural Punjab. Even by the standards of 19th century India it was totally devoid of all modern facilities. There was no electricity, no post office, no metalled roads or paths leading to it, and no main market except only one or two small shops. There was not even a school or Madrasa in the village. the nearest telegraph office was 14 miles away. From the nearest railway station at Batala there was no formal transport available for Qadian. The inhabitants of Qadian covered the distance from the Railway Station to Qadian on foot, sometimes taking many hours to make the journey. Qadian was established in 1530 by Mirza Hadi Baig, a religious scholar dedicated to Islam and the first Qazi within the area. Because of his religious beliefs, he named the new town 'Islam Pur Qazi'. Later, it was named just 'Qadi' and eventually, it became known as Qadian. In 1834, during the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the region consisting of Qadian and five other adjoining villages were given back to Mirza Ghulam Murtaza Sahib. In this village there lived a person who was then unknown to the wider world, named Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad

[as]. He was the son of Mirza Ghulam Murtaza Sahib, the chief of the village. Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad [as] belonged to a noble family, but had adopted an austere life for himself. Although he spent most of his time in reading and writing he was also passionate in his defence of Islam and wrote many articles championing the cause of Islam against virulent attacks of Christian and Arya Samaj (A missionary branch of Hinduism). He had little time for more worldly matters and lived such a secluded life that even some people living in Qadian did not know much about him. There was a small mosque attached to his house which could barely accommodate seven or eight people at once. At the time this was more than sufficient as he did not have many visitors or guests to call upon him. Apart from a few members of family and the occasional friend who might join the congregational prayer, the mosque was simply a place of
contemplation, solitude and prayer. He (Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, [as]) had only a select group of friends. One among them was Hazrat Abdullah Sannauri Sahib, a very pious man who lived outside Qadian and would visit him from time to time to spend a few days with him. It was about this time that he started to receive divine revelations from Allah. He would narrate his revelations to Hazrat Sannauri Sahib. In these revelations he had received the glad tidings that Islam would be triumphant once again. Huzoor was told that Allah would make him a Champion of Islam and that he would have the honour of defending his Master Hazrat Muhammad, [saw], against attacks made by Christian evangelists and the Arya Samaj . One day he told Hazrat Sannauri Sahib that he was constantly receiving the same revelation which he was finding
Articles difficult to understand. The words revealed repeatedly were, “Enlarge thy house”. Here is an excerpt from " Tazkira". Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, [as], says, “This was followed by the revelation (Arabic) Enlarge thy house. This means clearly that the day is coming when the number of visitors will multiply so much that it would be difficult to meet everyone and I was warned that I should not then be annoyed nor tired of meeting them. Holy is Allah, how grand is the prophecy which was conveyed to me seventeen years ago when only two or three people came to visit me and that also infrequently. What a wonderful proof is this of God’s knowledge of that which is hidden.(Siraji Muneer pp.6364; Tazkira translated by Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan, Pg. 35.)” Huzoor confided with Hazrat Sannauri Sahib and stated that although his small mosque could easily accommodate seven persons at a time, he did not expect so many guests ever to visit him. “Why should so many people visit him?” he asked. Hazrat Sannauri Sahib was of the same opinion and agreed with him. After a few days Huzoor said to Hazrat Sannauri Sahib that he was constantly receiving the same command of Allah to extend his house. Although he did not understand why he should extend his house, he nevertheless felt compelled to obey the command of Allah. He gave Maulvi Sannauri Sahib a few rupees and asked him to go to the nearby town of Amritsar and buy some timber and other building material so that he could extend his house. Hazrat Sannauri Sahib went to Amritsar and purchased some building material and eventually returned to Qadian. They both started work to put up a small veranda/hut next to his house and thus extended its capacity in a modest way, and in a few days completed the task. The next day Huzur asked Hazrat Sannauri Sahib to accompany him to have a look at the new construction. They both stood under the veranda/hut for some time in contemplation. The Promised Messiah [as] then raised his hands for prayers and said, “My Lord, I have obeyed your command and have extended my house although I still see no need of extension of the house. I have enough space at my small mosque where
seven or eight people can easily sleep. My Lord, Why would so many people come to me?” His eyes were moist with tears and his whole body was shaking with emotion. Huzur stood there for some time deep in prayer and lost in thought, and then slowly returned to the mosque. From those humble beginnings the foundation of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam was thus laid at a cost of only a few rupees, and a mountain of prayers! Today that same movement has spread to every part of the world in fulfilment of the Promised Messiah’s [as] prophesy and Allah’s promise that “I will cause thy message to reach the four corners of the world”. Under the leadership of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad’s [as] spiritual successors, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has now built over 15,000 purpose built mosques, over 500 schools, and over 30 hospitals. It has translated the Holy Qur'an into over 70 languages. It propagates the true teachings of Islam and the message of peace and tolerance through a twenty-four hour satellite television channel (MTA), the Internet (alislam.org) and has printed hundreds of books & periodicals in scores of different languages (Islam International Publications). All over the world the number of mosques, buildings and properties that the Movement owns and are used for daily prayer might run into hundreds of thousands. As a matter of fact, every house or property or business that an Ahmadi owns is an extension of the original few rupees investment that was made in response to divine revelation. Almighty Allah has fulfilled His promise and today the few rupees spent a century ago have been multiplied into billions of rupees. Ahmadiyyat has become like a tall and mighty oak and under its strong shade millions of its disciples, the followers of Hazrat Muhammad, [saw] are now flourishing and taking its shelter. That small investment of the Promised Messiah [as] of a few rupees and a mountain of prayers has led to the Jama'at having the distinction of returning to Spain and building the first mosque in that country after 600 years of
Muslim exile. Building the first mosque in the United Kingdom in London, at a time when it was at the heart of the British Empire. Hundreds of Mosques have been built in every corner of the African continent. The first purpose built mosque in South America was built in Guatemala, and recently a beautiful new mosque was opened in Jamaica, West Indies. In far flung Kobe, Japan to the tiny pacific island of Tuvalu Ahmadis have built mosques in fulfilment of Allah’s prophesy and to spread the message of Islam. Every corner of the continent of Europe has a mosque built by Ahmadis. The most recent opening is when our beloved Khalifatul Masih Hazrat Mirza Masroor [atba] Ahmad inaugurated a beautiful mosque in the Scandinavian country of Norway. Whilst the “Islamic” republic of Pakistan has silenced the Adhan (Call for five daily prayers) being called in mosques belonging to Ahmadis in Pakistan, Allah in return has blessed the Jamaat with the honour of building hundreds of mosques around the globe, almost as an admonishment to Pakistan. It is as if Allah has said that you may have silenced the call to prayer from the minarets of mosques in Pakistan, but His universal call to prayer could never be silenced and would be heard from the far flung corners of the world. For every one Ahmadi mosque defaced, demolished, or shut down, Allah has given the Jamaat the honour of building a hundred in its place. Such are the bounty and blessings bestowed upon the Jamaat, and in fulfilment of that command of Allah to the Promised Messiah to extend his house. That one extension those many years ago in response to Allah's command has resulted in the extension of the Jama'at a thousand fold. The few rupees that the Promised Messiah [as] gave for the extension of his house has multiplied into many billions of rupees spent in the service of Islam. The miracle of the growth of the Jamaat from such humble beginnings in such a (comparatively) short space of time is in itself a matter of inspiration and reinforces faith in the power of Almighty Allah and the covenant that he made with his humble disciple. I ask myself: is this not sufficient to prove the truthfulness of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, The Promised Messiah [as]? Tariq Magazine June 2012

Living the life of Austerity By Tayyib Hayyat , National Mohtamim Tarbiyyat, MAA UK.
T
he Islamic concept of the ‘austere lifestyle’ is derived from the fundamental principle in Islam that man has been created solely for the purpose of worshipping his Lord (Holy Qur’an, Ch.51:V.57). That worship is carried out when man correctly recognises and imitates, (within the scope of his human limitations), the attributes of Allah, the Exalted (Holy Qur’an, Ch.30:V.31). As can be easily understood, Allah is in Himself perfectly Self-Sufficient. Whatever He needs is within His own means and never dependent upon anything else. When man attempts to emulate this eternal state of his Lord, to the best of his abilities, it can be said that he is living a life of austerity or selfsufficiency. The Holy Prophet’s [saw] response to impassioned pleas that he should have comfortable bedding was, “The similitude of this life and me is as a traveller who stopped to take shelter in the shade of a tree and then arose and left it.” Such was the austerity of Muhammad, Prophet of God and King of Arabia [saw]. Some of his most spiritually advanced disciples were multi-millionaires yet they lived according to need and function, as if oblivious to effeminate ‘accessorising’ or ‘bling.’ The Promised Messiah [as] in admonishing his devotees in his book The Will, writes, “Choose a life of austerity for the sake of God.” What is meant is not renunciation of the physical, rather a devotee is expected to analyse his requirements for effective day to day living in a state of God-consciousness and not to covet an atom more than is necessary for his needs. Many Muslims wrongly interpret the sayings of the Holy Prophet [saw] and declare that he instructs a believer to live a life of poverty, or to live as a pauper. Christian Hermits, Hindu Saddhus and Buddhist monks are examples of people who possess nothing

and live as wandering ascetics. Muslims being impressed by such ‘holy’ celibates may mistakenly feel that such a life is espoused by the Holy Qur’an. Our modern civilisation has two unique features that very powerfully instil in all of us, right from childhood, the desire not to be self-sufficient. Firstly, our society is led by rampant consumerism requiring businesses to wage a psychological marketing war upon us so that we may perpetually buy their products. For example, every few months we feel an inner urge to upgrade our cell phone for the ‘latest’ version. Secondly, in this global village we are saturated by ‘choice’ in terms of information, products, facilities and even lifestyles. The population is always seeking more. ‘More’ is now a way of life. Instead of asking ‘What do I need?’, it is more like ‘What must I have?’ The current global economic crisis and political instability in most regions of the world are causing previously welloff people to start looking to downgrade their lifestyles, whilst their nations teeter on the brink of bankruptcy and as poorer citizens are financially squeezed to constantly bail out the rich and powerful. Television programs dealing with extreme survival such as ‘Bear Grylls: Born Survivor’ and ‘Ray Mears Extreme Survival’ are primetime viewing. Today, citizens in countries like Greece, Italy, Spain and Ireland are locked in a state of total insecurity and instability, hoping against hope that their respective countries do not financially implode. Many people in the UK have lost their jobs or businesses. Inundated with debts they have no money to feed themselves. Increasingly, whole families are going daily to charitable food kitchens. Some are reported in the media to have taken their own lives as a way out of their misery. The Ahmadiyya Khilafat has been consistent in warning the world over decades that bare-faced hedonism and living off an interest-based economic
system is going to bring about a Third World War. No nation can perpetually maintain an artificial lifestyle of finance and consumption. When the economic bubble bursts then the same reprisals will be re-enacted between nations as occurred before leading to the previous two World Wars. Generations of Ahmadi Muslims have grown up having learnt martial arts in order to defend themselves, and to ride bicycles in order decrease their carbon footprint. Each Khalifatul Masih of his time has been preparing his Community for the time when the whole society will break down due to economic depression and war. Then there will be no choice but to live within one’s means and become self-sufficient, to survive on what one can hunt and gather. It may be prudent to begin to prepare oneself and one’s loved ones for being able to live in changeable circumstances. Stores and businesses may close due to the unavailability of food and goods caused by mass strikes and riots; trading nations may collapse and war may even break out. Disaffected, roguish or impoverished citizens may run riot as has already happened in the UK riots. This is the experience of Ahmadi Muslims who took Humanitarian Aid directly into the warzones of Bosnia and Kosovo, to help the besieged and beleaguered citizens. Their lives had been turned upside down in a matter of days, never to become normal again. There we witnessed first-hand that many of those unprepared people became mad because of what happened to them—to live day to day without the simplest of things like tap water, electricity, gas, dustbin men. In those times all shops were empty of food and goods, etc. Without resorting to paranoia or pessimism, we can (a): pray to Allah to save us all and grant us a better future and, (b): become determined to live in that future without a life of waste, decadence and personal debt. It is these very things
Articles along with godless corruption that have brought about the current global crisis. When praying it is wise to remember: “Surely, Allah changes not the condition of a people until they change that which is in their hearts. And when Allah wishes to punish a people, there is no repelling it,nor have they any helper beside Him.” (Holy Qur’an, Ch.13:V.12) Living the austere life has many amazing aspects. Examples of some are: the reliance on Allah as your Provider; having only what you need and not more; limiting your activities to those promoting goodness and progress; not wasting one’s time and energy; not thinking, speaking or moving beyond necessity; repairing and recycling your clothes and possessions; growing some of your food; remaining alert to subtle changes in your environment; being able to function anywhere on the planet and in all circumstances. Last but not least, one is provided a once in a lifetime opportunity to walk in the footsteps of one’s beloved master, Muhammad [saw] and gaining an insight into his most endearing and charming personality. Given the above, we would like to present you with a series of articles to introduce ways of surviving in times of hardship. Taking techniques from bushcraft, mountaineering, and similar crafts you can become confident in your personal abilities and skills to look after yourself, your loved ones and your neighbours regardless of whatever may be looming on the horizon.

Nizam-e-Jama’at And Our Responsibilities Towards It By Shahzad Ahmed, Jamia Ahmadiyya U.K.
W
hen you find the Mahdi perform Bai’at at his hands. You must go to him, even if you have to reach him across icebound mountains on your knees. He is the Mahdi and Caliph of Allah’ Our beloved master, the Holy Prophet [saw] brought the final and complete message from God Almighty in the form of the Holy Qur’an. At a time when there were just a handful of followers of the Holy Prophet [saw] and Muslims were living in constant fear, God almighty gave the glad tidings of great victory and success to the Holy Prophet [saw] in the following verse of the Holy Qur’an: He it is Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it prevail over every other religion, even though the idolaters may dislike it. (Al-Taubah, Ch.9:V.33) The Holy Prophet [saw] and his companions according to this very prophecy of the Holy Qur’an were granted great triumph in every aspect. The Ka’ba which was home to more than 300 idols and was the stronghold of the Meccans, who would conspire day and night to annihilate Islam had now once again become the centre from which sprung forth the worship of The One God. The streets of Arabia were now echoing with the praise of Allah and His beloved Prophet [saw]. However, this was only a partial fulfilment of this grand prophecy because at the time of the Holy Prophet’s [saw] demise, Islam had not spread much further than the Arabian Peninsula and despite its perfect and universal teachings it had not prevailed over every other religion as prophesied. Thus, it is unanimously believed by the scholars of Islam that the dominance of Islam was going to take place in

the Latter Days by the advent of the Promised Messiah [as]—whose advent was going to be as if it were the second manifestation of the Holy Prophet [saw].
latter days appears he would perform the duties with the Holy Qur’an and under the guidance of the practices of the Holy Prophet [saw] (Shahih Muslim Kitab ul Iman Vol 1 page 137).
However, this was by no means going to be an easy task as the Holy Prophet [saw] had prophesied that the Messiah [as] was going to appear at a time when the Dajjal would have emerged i.e. the Western powers, the false and idolatrous Christian doctrines would have spread all over the world and the morality of man would be at an all-time low. Islam itself was going to be in no better state either as the Holy Prophet [saw] regarding the latter days had prophesied:
If we take a glance at the life of our beloved Prophet [saw] we find that after announcing his prophethood, like all earlier prophets before him, he established a community of righteous believers and inculcated great moral values and excellences and placed them in a perfect and structured system i.e. within a Nizam. It was this Nizam that in turn strengthened and unified them against every onslaught. Thus, the establishment of a community and then placing them under a Nizam has always been the tradition of the Prophets of God.
‘A time will come when nothing would be left of Islam except its name, and nothing would be left of the Qur’an except its script, their mosques would be full of worshipers but would be devoid of righteousness….’ (Mishkat ul Masabih vol.1 page 91) Not only was the Promised Messiah [as] going to face bitter opposition from the non-Muslims but in fact according to Hadhrat Mohyuddin Ibn Arabi in his book Al-Fatuh-haat-i-Makkiyya, ‘At the appearance of the Imam Mahdi none would be his open enemy other than the divines—the religious scholars.’ According to the divine prophesies of the Holy Qur’an and the Holy Prophet [saw], the advent of the Promised Messiah [as], Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas took place. He was invested with the mammoth task of the reformation of the whole world by uniting them under the banner of Islam. As mentioned earlier this was going to be no easy task, but nevertheless it was not going to be achieved by force or conquering territories and land, rather it was going to be achieved in the way the Holy Prophet [saw] had prophesied—i.e when the Imam of the
Similarly, the Promised Messiah [as] according to the Divine Commandment of Allah, in 1889 established the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Regarding this he stated ‘This system of Bai’at has been established solely to gather together a group of the righteous people in a Jama‘at so that a weighty group of the righteous people should make a holy impact on the world. The unity of these righteous people should be a source of blessings, grandeur, and positive results for Islam… In the service of Islam, they should be willing to sacrifice themselves like one overpowered with love. All their efforts should be devoted to spread Islam’s blessings throughout the world so that a pure fountain of the love of Allah and sympathy for humanity may flow from every heart and, being combined in one place, should look like a flowing river.’ (Majmu‘ah Ishtiharat, vol. 1, pp. 196-198) This is the Jihad that has been undertaken by the Promised Messiah [as] and his followers; however the attack on Islam today is not only from all fronts, but is being conducted in a systemised fashion
Articles backed by huge funds and through every means possible. Thus, it was necessary that the Promised Messiah [as] in order to counter the efforts of the enemy and achieve the great task of propagating the message of Islam that he too organised and structured his community. The overall system and organisation of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is known as the Nizam-e-Jama’at. The Promised Messiah [as] during his lifetime established the very first foundations of this Nizam by instituting the Sadr Anjuman Ahmadiyya—the Central Ahmadiyya Council to look after the administrative affairs of the Jama’at in January 1906. However, since all prophets are mortals and eventually have to depart this world, the Promised Messiah [as] was informed by Allah that the time of his demise was now very close ‘Very few days are left. On that day all will be saddened. This will happen, this will happen, this will take place. Your event will take place after all other events and natural wonders have been demonstrated.’ (Al-Wasiyyat Pg.3) However, the Promised Messiah [as] gave his Community the glad tiding that since it has always been a long established tradition of God almighty, He will display two manifestations of His powers. The first of His powers is shown at the hands of His prophets and the second through the establishment of Khilafat and so this community shall also, after the demise of the Promised Messiah [as], witness this great blessing of Allah until the Day of Judgment. Hence, after the demise of the Promised Messiah [as] the divine blessings and succour of Allah continued through the divine institution of Khilafat. By the grace of God almighty the institution of Khilafat on the precepts of prophethood has now been established for over 100 years in the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and it is purely through the blessings and guidance of Khilafat that the community and its Nizam has strengthened and developed and has taken root all across the world under the leadership of the Khalifa— purely for the purpose of the propagation of Islam and service to mankind. Today we find that for the propagation of the true teachings of Islam various schemes have been set up such as Tehrike-Jadid and Waqf-e-Jadid as a result of
which the message of Islam has reached some of the remotest areas of the world, the Holy Qur’an has been translated into more than 70 languages, over a thousand mosques have been constructed around the world, the message of Islam is being conveyed around the world through MTA and the publication of millions of items of literature in the form of books, journals and magazines are being distributed around the world. Similarly under the Nusrat Jehan scheme, great efforts are being made to serve the creation of God irrespective of race and religion and, by the grace of God, under this scheme the community is running 37 hospitals, 594 primary and 70 secondary schools in 12 African countries. Then the establishment of the divine scheme of Al-Wasiyyat has provided the world with the most perfect economical solution to eliminate poverty and greed and acts as a perfect model to be adopted as the new world order. It is this highly developed and structured Nizam of the Jama’at which makes it one of the most organised and effective Muslim communities of the world. However, all of this is solely down to the divine guidance and leadership of Khilafat. The Jihad that we have taken up today for the propagation of Islam by pledging our allegiance to the Promised Messiah [as] requires us to show complete obedience to our Imam. The Holy Prophet [saw] has said that true Jihad cannot be carried out without an Imam, he states: ‘The Imam of the Muslims is a shield for them; they fight behind him and are protected by him’ (Sahih Muslim Kitab ul Amaarah). Therefore the Nizam that we have today cannot be effective and neither can it be of any benefit without the complete obedience shown to him. Therefore, it would be completely absurd and a grave error if one was to assume that all these schemes, initiatives, auxiliary organisations and various foundations that are functioning today for the spread of Islam and the reformation of the world are a separate entity to the institution of Khilafat. In fact the very inception and the continuous development of this Nizam is as a direct result of Khilafat and the Nizam of the Jama’at that we see today is in essence one of the delicious fruits of Khilafat and so the obedience
shown to this Nizam is in fact our obedience shown to Khilafat. The success and efficiency of any system or organisation however is directly dependent upon the obedience and loyalty displayed towards it. The Holy Qur’an has therefore placed great emphasis on the importance of obedience and has commanded believers: “O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey His Messenger and those who are in authority among you. “ (Al-Nisa, Ch.4:V.60) Similarly, the Holy Prophet [saw] has stated: You are obligated to hear and obey in prosperity and adversity, willingly or unwillingly, and even when you are treated unjustly. (Muslim) Therefore complete obedience to Khilafat and the Nizam which is directly under its supervision is imperative upon each and every Ahmadi Muslim. The 10th condition of the Bai’at also reiterates this fact as it reads: “He/She shall enter into a bond of brotherhood with this humble servant of God, pledging obedience to me in everything good, for the sake of God, and remain faithful to it till the day of his/her death. He/She shall exert such a high devotion in the observance of this bond as is not to be found in any other worldly relationship and connection that demand devoted dutifulness.” It should be remembered that the Nizam-e-Jama’at is perfect and free from errors and flaws because the unique quality that the Nizam-e-Jama’at possess is that its foundations are perfect as they are established under the guidance and constant supervision of the blessed institution of Khilafat. Therefore although there may be operational flaws, the actual foundation and structure of the Nizam-e-Jama’at is perfect and sound and so it is incumbent upon each and every Ahmadi to show complete obedience to the Nizam and strive to improve it. To be continued…

In Daruratul-Imam, the Promised Messiah [as] explained with cogent arguments the need of an Imam and then he identified himself as the Promised Imam. Daruratul-Imam reflected how the Promised Messiah’s [as] sympathy for mankind was unfathomable, his heart was overflowing with love and sincerity. His very soul was anxious to pour itself in the service of the fellow beings, so that they might become aware of the importance of the Promised Imam. The Promised Messiah [as] sat down one Thursday, November 19, 1898, and completed this book by next day, Friday, November 20, 1898. In this remarkable book, which is written in chaste Arabic, the Promised Messiah [as] enumerated the greatness of the Holy Prophet [saw]. This is published in large size in Arabic with translation in Urdu and Persian running side by side. The Urdu translation is his, while the Persian is done by one of his Companions and the English translation appeared in the days of the Second Caliph, Hadrat Musleh-eMau‘ud [ra] under the title “The Load Star.”

The Book
After praising God and the Holy Prophet [saw] in the beginning of this book, the Promised Messiah [as] introduces himself as the one in whom his father was totally disappointed because he was not the man of this world and shunned even mixing with people. He loved solitude as it was “the audience chamber of God.” He had no interest in his estate and as a matter of fact he was deprived practically of all its benefits. But God selected him and commissioned him to do the great work of the regeneration of mankind. So, in obedience and in response to the Call, he spoke to the whole world: “Listen, O Earth, to what I say, and O Heaven, be thou a witness, verily, verily, God has made me the Promised Messiah and Mahdi; he has called me as such in clear words. I am not of the deceivers. Falsehood does not touch my lips and you know the end of liars. Of a truth, the Divine Light of Revelation and Reason has vouchsafed to me and this is all the grace of God (Life of Ahmad by A.R. Dardra, pp. 600-601) In this book, he gave a vivid description of prevailing irreligiousness and corruption.

He referred particularly to the vast and varied activities of the Christian missionaries to proselytise the world. He deplored deeply the objectionable methods adopted by advocates of other faiths to run down Islam and mislead people. His heart was sore vexed at the rank abuse which was being ceaselessly heaped in the name of religion upon the Holy Prophet, Muhammad [saw], the greatest benefactor of mankind. The Cross, he said, was ascendant throughout
m.org/books the world, and this in itself was a sign of the advent of the Promised Messiah according to Muslim scriptures. He should have appeared in this age to break the power of the Cross with heavenly means. The scriptures were true and the prophecy was fulfilled. The Promised Messiah [as] was the Promised Reformer of the world. He also referred to the fulfilment of his own prophecy which was about the tragic death of Pandit Lekh Ram who insulted the Promised Messiah [as] at Qadian by insolently demanding a heavenly sign. The wrath of God overtook him and nobody subsequently had the courage to treat the Promised Messiah [as] with the same rudeness and impertinence. Then he referred to heavenly signs over which he could have no possible control. The sun and the moon were darkened by an eclipse in fulfilment of the prophecy laid down in Muslim and Christian scriptures centuries before. The command over the Arabic language which the Promised Messiah [as] divinely acquired was so perfect and sublime that it was in itself a miracle. He had not attended any school for this purpose and was taunted by his enemies
for this reason. He was looked upon as an ignorant person so he turned to God, he says, and besought Him and implored Him until He Himself taught him the language. The elegance of style, the depth of meaning and marked eloquence with which he wrote and spoke Arabic, were unmatched and unequalled. Was this not a sign in itself ?

I had, by nature, a retiring disposition and did not take happily to meeting people, which bore heavily on me. My father was disappointed in me because of this and considered that I was like a guest in the house requiring only board and lodging and realized that I preferred to be left alone and was not happy in the company of people. He admonished me sharply over this and counselled me, day and night, openly and in secret, to try to make material progress and directed my attention to worldly attractions, but I was being drawn very strongly towards God. My brother was like my father in these matters and he also treated me in the same way. Allah the Almighty caused both of them to die, and did not prolong their lives and He revealed to Tariq Magazine June 2012
