Greetings from Pastor Amelda L. Lee “From Vision to Reality”
I would like to extend a warm welcome to you who have traveled from near and far to share with us in this glorious occasion of the Dedication of our new Sanctuary, built for the glory of God. It would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the “Vision” God gave to our late Pastor, Reverend James L. Dargon, who led us to purchase land in March of 1986 to build this new Church. Now, in 2015, this “vision” has finally become a “reality.” The journey has been long and fraught with obstacles, seen and unseen, but through the grace and glory of God, we’ve made it!
The Lord used Pastor Dargon as a type of “Moses,” who at 90 years of age and after having served the Providence family for 30 years, helped us purchase this land on Paul’s Place as one of his final acts. People such as Ruth Scott, Chairwoman of the Task Force, Deacon Hayes Johnson, Trustee’s Richard Byrd and Sylvester Clifton along with others, were instrumental in securing the land. Reverend Dargon retired shortly thereafter, not seeing us through to the end of the vision, but God raised up some “Joshua’s” to bring the vision to completion for which I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Others such as Trustee Ewing Johnson, Deacon Wilbur Underwood and Deaconess Annie Clifton, to name a few, were great encouragers in moving us forward. Many others played key roles along the way, strategically positioned by God to help keep the “Vision” alive and prepare us to achieve today’s reality.
Although today we can see the manifestation of the “vision,” the assignment to build that began so many years ago is not over. In fact, it has given us a renewed challenge to move from some of the limitations we previously encountered, to transition us to new ministry opportunities as we engage in initiatives that will meet the spiritual and psycho-social needs of our community with its varied ages and stages of development. In fulfilling our mission assignment, we will continue to strive to minister to the “whole” man in ways that are relevant for this season. I am so thankful for the support and encouragement we’ve received over these many years. Although I can’t name them all, allow me to recognize a few. First of all, to a congregation of people who followed my lead and did not lose hope but caught the vision and worked hard to bring it to life. I’m grateful for the wise counsel and support provided by friends such as Sal Alfieri and his Partners at the Law firm and for their generous support over these years. Extremely grateful to all those nameless individuals who have given their financial support again and again, many at great sacrifice. I’m thankful to the Officers, leaders and Building Ministry of Providence and for their tireless, unwavering support, especially through the never ending meeting process. Most of all I am grateful and amazed at the wonder of His Majesty, our Lord Jesus Christ, who has entrusted us with this challenging endeavor on His behalf, helping us to bring the Vision to Reality. TO GOD BE THE GLORY FOR THE GREAT THINGS HE HAS DONE!!! Amen.
Providence Baptist Church of Cliffwood NJ was founded as a small missionary organization on Tuesday October 11, 1927 at the home of Rev. and Mrs. George Smith on 5th St. which is now 253 Nathan Ct. Rev. Smith used his basement as a meeting place. They are the parents of Mrs. Susie Boles, the Grand Parents of Mrs. Carrie Alston and Bennie Boles, Great Grand Parents of Mrs. Eleanor Richardson, a longtime resident of Cliffwood. Later on the missionary meetings were held in the home of Mr. Haugabrook. As the Lord blessed this mission, the membership grew. Therefore, there was a great need to have worship service in a church building. With much prayer and great consideration, Deacon Joseph Harris of Matawan NJ was able to mortgage his home for $2,500.00 to have Providence Baptist Church erected, on Kennedy Ave. The men of the community came together and went to Archwal brickyard with wheel barrels and were given bricks for free that didn’t fire up. They would push loads of wheel barrels up and down the railroad tracks to the site for the new sanctuary. Some of the willing workers were Mr. Roger Mitter Sr. (father of Carol Mitter and Pearl Gumbs), Mr. Walter Bethune, Rev. Milton Alston, Rev. Samuel Button and Mr. Bates, who only had one leg. Some of the early original members were instrumental in the progress of the church such as Bro. Gabriel and Sis. Daisy Robinson, (parents of Pauline Drake), Bro. Walter and Sis. Sarah Hicks (parents of Sadie Gumbs), Bro. Frank and Sis. Maude Bell (parents of Leona Fleming), Bro. Roosevelt and Sis. Ruby Bethune, (parents of Maxine Carty) Sis. Mabel Philips, Rev. Laboo, Hugo Fleming, (father of Audrey Jones) and Rev. Coakley, just to name a few. When the building was completed there was neither a heating system nor pews. Members were warmed by a coal fueled pot-belly stove and they carried chairs from their homes for every service. In later years a home located next to the church caught on fire, badly burning the sanctuary, but by the grace of God it was not destroyed. The cornerstone of the church was laid under the leadership of Pastor JC Bentley. Upon his call to a new assignment, he recommended Rev. JL Dargon as his successor. The church was enlarged. Interior remodeling was done by Mr. Vernon Rossin of Cliffwood to include a new baptismal pool, entrance, choir stand and pastoral study. The land next to the church was purchased to make way for a parking lot. Sometime in the 80’s, the church was struck by lightning, again, incurring fire and smoke damage but through God’s mercy the church was spared from destruction. With a vision for the future, Rev. Dargon led Providence in purchasing the land on Paul’s Place to build a new sanctuary for God’s glory before his retirement in 1987. The 470 x 100 foot lot was purchased at a public auction in March of 1986. Over the years the Lord sent a number of Pastors to Sheppard the flock. On Nov. 18, 2006, the church installed their first female Pastor, Rev. Dr. Amelda L Lee. With a mandate to evangelize the lost, disciple the saved and equipping the saints for effective ministry, Providence has sought to present the Gospel of Christ to our community at large. Through reaching, preaching and teaching the word of God to all who will here and obey, we strive to exemplify the love of Jesus in fulfillment of the vision of the future as we seek to make disciples for the glory of God.
The Vision - The Journey There was a vision from heaven in 1927 that a church of God should birthed it was set in time and put in place from the beginning of this earth. The Holy Spirit began to speak to the people of this community and out of obedience to our God Providence Baptist Church was born you see. Now the founders were Rev. and Mrs. Smith God fearing people to say the least The people gathered in their basement As they began to have a Holy Ghost feast Now the assembly of God grew larger their basement no longer scarified so a building was erected thru many a sacrifice Now it came with the bare necessities not too much was in it people carried chairs from their homes to the church, so they could have a place to sit
Folks gathered around a little cold stove which kept them warm as they praised the Lord The Holy Ghost fell upon their services For they were all on one accord
The church continued to expand in membership and size an another addition was added to the building some couldn’t believe their eyes As time went on pastor’s came and went Then we were blessed by Rev. J.L. Dargon you see this vision came under his leadership And we purchased this piece of property We had many starts, but very few parts To make the vision become a reality when the time was right God began to move And he sent us his servant Rev. Amelda Lee
So today we take our residency surrounded by new walls, windows, floors, and a roof Because we moved forward and continued to trust God You can bear witness to his perfect truth
For God is man, that cannot lie as believers we know this to be true so the message for the world today is to keep trusting him and put him first in all that you say and do. AMEN Written by Audrey L. Jones

The Youth Ministry Celebrates with Providence Baptist Church As we Dedicate our new Sanctuary
Sister Pauline Drake began attending Providence in 1931 or 1932 as a little girl. She doesn’t remember
who the Pastor was but there were several Ministers and they always had good preaching. She says, “This
was a good church, very friendly to everybody. We were like one big family who helped out whoever had a need.
Providence didn’t have a Baptismal Pool at that time, she says, “Our members would be baptized at
Second Baptist Church in Keyport.” The churches were close knit and there would be combined Sunrise Services on Easter Sunday with Second Baptist Church, Mt. Moriah and St. Mark A.M.E. Zion and others.
Breakfast fellowship would follow the service. Some of her other fond memories include dinners where
members would bid on meals prepared by other families, Quartet Singing Contests and traveling with the youth choir. Sis. Drake defines the construction of the new Sanctuary as a “Dream come true.”
Sister Maxine Carty and Brother Pernell Bethune children of Deacon Roosevelt and Deaconess Ruby Bethune, were very young when they became a part of Providence. They recall the church was originally a part of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church of Cliffwood Beach, but members had difficulty traveling there and began meeting at the home of Reverend Smith. They would bring their own chairs for service until the congregation grew too large to meet in his home. They remember being baptized at Second Baptist Church in Keyport on Easter Sunday morning. They fondly remember being a part of the Baptist Training Union and the Red Circle, a religious group for girls that met each Sunday afternoon. They enjoyed trips to Coney Island, Cheesequake Park and Keansburg Amusement Park (Thursdays were Segregation night). Each of them loved the chicken and collard green dinners held at the church, listening to the Junior and Senior Choirs singing, and special services where the children would recite speeches when they were young. They’ve stated, “Building the new church is a long time in coming, but it’s fantastic.” Sister Ella Mitchell joined Providence Baptist Church in 1946 under the leadership of Reverend Lebue. She loves the Pastors and members that have come and gone and has fond memories of the Bethune children and others who were a part of the church, remembering the services where members were warmed by a “Pot Bellied Stove.” She states, “She is glad the new church is finally under construction, Providence has owned the land about 30 years.” Sister Mitchell was in attendance at the meeting when the land was purchased from Aberdeen Township. Providence bid $30,000 for the land and the Mayor, who found out we wanted to buy the property, encouraged others not to bid against the church.
Deacon Lonnie Clifton joined Providence in the Spring of 1957 under the Pastorate of Rev. James L. Dargon. He states “The church was really small back then and was still being heated by a potbellied stove.” Since that time the church was expanded to include the pulpit and choir stand upstairs and the baptismal pool and Pastors office downstairs. Deacon Clifton says, “It feels good that we are finally building. The church has owned the property for a long time and now being able to do something with the land is a blessing.” He remembers Aberdeen Township owned the land on Paul’s Place and we put in a $30,000 bid for the property which the mayor accepted, not allowing any contractors to bid against the church. Trustee Sylvester Clifton to the good people of Providence. It gives me pleasure to see the photos of the project that the people started out to accomplish so many years ago. My mind goes back to the night we were all down at the town hall to bid on the property. Some of us were out in the hall trying to decide how high we could go on our bid if it became necessary. But thanks be to God, He worked it out so we could purchase the land for the minimum bid.
