Marva was born on August 21, 1949 in Montclair, New Jersey to the late Daniel Johnson and Marvie Lee Johnson. Marva was a lifelong resident of Montclair and often expressed her appreciation for the relationships she built within the community. During her childhood, Marva was known for her warm spirit and commitment to caring for her mother and grandmother. Throughout her life Marva worked in partnership with her mother in their clothing stores. Marva’s commitment to her mother knew no boundaries. Her family fondly remembers the time Marva chased down a robber that had just grabbed money from the register. She sat on him until the police came. Just as her commitment knew no boundaries, neither did her bravery or courage.
Marva attended Our Lady of Lourdes in West Orange, and later graduated from Montclair High School in June of 1968. Thereafter, she attended Georgian Court College in Lakewood, earning a B.A. in Sociology in May of 1972. After graduating Marva worked in the social work field and later joined the Newark Public School System. She proved to be an exceptional special education teacher for over 25 years. Up until her homegoing, Marva maintained contact with many of her former students who often expressed an appreciation for her kind heart.
Marva had a passion for growth and development. When her daughter left for college, Marva announced to her family that she would pursue a master’s degree. Marva always delivered on everything she said! In 2002, she graduated from Montclair State University, where she received a Master’s in Education with a concentration in Critical Thinking.
The highpoint of her life was becoming a mother, and she was an extraordinary one. She gave motherhood her all. Even through challenges, she still had a high level of optimism and never stopped caring for the family around her. After their mother’s passing, Marva and Daniel continued to maintain their close bond and reminisced about their mother. Marva was sweet, had a wonderful sense of humor and was always more concerned for others than for herself. She was a true and trusted friend whom we will miss for the rest of our lives. When Marva transitioned from this world to the next, she was surrounded by lifelong friends and relatives. Marva leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Yasmin, her brother Daniel, and her beloved aunts Ruby and Mary, as well as a host of nephews, cousins and other loving relatives and friends.
Life’s race well run. Life’s work well done, Life’s victory well won,

Perhaps you sent a lovely card or sat quietly in a chair. Perhaps you sent a floral piece if so, we saw it there. Perhaps you spoke the kindest words as any friend could say. Perhaps you were not there at all just thought of us on that day. Whatever you did to console our hearts, we thank you, whatever the part.
