Nadine Elizabeth Smith Sherwood “A Precious Jewel of God”

Nadine Elizabeth Smith Sherwood was born May 28, 1923 in Denison, TX to the late Thomas and Lizzie Henderson Smith. She was the eighth of nine siblings—all of whom preceded her in transitioning. She was educated in the Denison, TX public school system, graduating from Terrell High School with honors. She and her family attended St. Luke CME Church. She enrolled in Samuel Huston College in Austin, TX and earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and a minor in music. During her four years at Sam Huston, she participated in many activities and clubs. She joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in November of 1944. Soror Founder Myra Davis Hemmings pinned her. Nadine aligned herself with their Delta Mobile Book Club and Toys for Tots programs. She was employed by the Dean of Men and often taught the United States History class when the professor was away in meetings. After graduation, Nadine was employed in Cameron, TX. She worked at the O. J. Thomas School as a music teacher. She had as school chorus of about 50 students and was very enthusiastic about their range and knowledge. Together, they achieved much acclaim and many awards. She left O. J. Thomas to work in Van Alystene, TX at an elementary school, teaching fifth and sixth grades. After three or four years, she left for Terrell School where she taught seventh grade. She especially enjoyed this position because it brought her home. After four years, Nadine left to pursue her Masters degree at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO. During her second year, in a very “heated” class debate, she took on one of her male classmates. About a year after the classroom skirmish, she married one of the brawlers, Warren Edward Sherwood, March 14, 1952. She moved to Indianapolis with Warren in 1954 and continued teaching in the public school system. There, she remained active with the local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, serving on many committees as well as chapter president. She also worked with Jones Tabernacle AME Church in various capacities. While in Indianapolis, she was blessed to have two daughters, Cynthia and Allyson. In 1968, because her husband, who worked for the federal government was transferred, Nadine and her family moved to Madison, WI. There, she connected with the local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and served in many positions including President. She attended the St. Paul AME church, working in various capacities, the school PTA, and the local chapter of Alpha Wives. Two years later, Warren was transferred, and she and her family moved to Montclair, New Jersey where she resided for 46 years. In Montclair, she connected with the Montclair Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, serving on just about every committee but mostly as parliamentarian and secretary. She was very active with the PTA serving as president from 1976-1978. She was active with the Alpha Wives, the Alphabettes, and also jointed the Order of the Eastern Star. She and her family joined Saint Mark’s United Methodist Church, and she remained a member until her passing. Her greatest accomplishment was being elected the first woman Chairperson of the Trustee Board. Nadine is survived by her two daughters, Dr. Cynthia S. Samuel and Dr. Allyson E. Sherwood; two grandchildren, Maegan Elizabeth and David Samuel III; one brother-in-law, Donald G. Sherwood of Sykeston, MO; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and the beloved family cat, Harmony.
