ST. PAUL BAPTIST CHURCH SERVICE ○ WORSHIP ○ FELLOWSHIP ○ GROWTH ○ EVANGELISM
WELCOME TO OUR NEW SENIOR PASTOR
Dear Dr. Glover: The St. Paul Baptist Church family is grateful to Almighty God and excited to welcome you as our new Senior Pastor. The journey to this place has been a long and eventful one! We believe that God was with us each step of the way and that He foresaw that we would be at precisely this milestone at this time. Without hesitation, we acknowledge that He truly knew the plan He had for us. When you came to us as our Interim Pastor in September 2013, we thought that our time together was solely for the purpose of preparing for the next Senior Pastor. You fulfilled that Divine assignment in a most extraordinary manner. We know from your continued acknowledgement of His Lordship over your life and from our observation of your Christian walk and leadership, that this was accomplished because of your unquestioning commitment to your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We certainly did not anticipate all the plans that God had for us. As these plans unfolded, and to our extreme joy and gladness, we realized God had also ordained you would be our next Senior Pastor. We are energized by the clarion call of your vision that in 2016 we will move “Forward in Hope” as Pastor and People with God as our Guide. Through your anointed ministry, we have already been experiencing some of the blessings that God has in store for us. We anticipate that as we grow and serve Him together, we will be recipients of even greater blessings. We also realize that, although God has equipped you with special gifts to serve as Senior Pastor, He does not intend for you to work alone. We therefore pledge, as the people of God, to co-labor with you in sustaining the goals which are the Pillars of our church: Worship, Service, Growth, Evangelism, and Fellowship. We further anticipate that as we seek to understand and carry out His Will together through the fellowship of kindred minds, we will develop strong ties that will bind our hearts forever in Christian love. We welcome you with joy and pray that God will continue to bless you richly. Thank you for accepting His call to be our Senior Pastor. Sincerely,
Chair, Deacon Board

Dr. Bernadette Glover, an advocate of justice, a facilitator of community, and a pursuer of liberty, regards the power of her prophetic call in the highest esteem. A woman of God, a bearer of truth, and preacher extraordinaire, Dr. Glover has the heart of a pastor and the humility of a servant. She has learned that being still and silent in the presence of the Almighty I Am, yields great commune with God, the Master of destiny and the Rewarder of faithfulness. Empowered by this calling, Dr. Glover is dedicated to the vibrant transformation of lives, with the clarion call that every life matters to God and that we are here to ensure that the dignity of every man, woman, boy and girl is not sacrificed in the pursuit of a personal agenda. Recognizing that justice is not confined to non-Christian environments, Dr. Glover embodies compassion, follows peace, and carries the torch of hope as she advances the Kingdom of God in her language, her walk, and her life. Realizing that the Christian faith is to engage the world not as a separate belief system, but as a mechanism of change, convicting the hearts of men to let justice ring until the lost are found and those who are broken are restored, Dr. Glover has dedicated her time and her talents to fulfill this purpose. Committed to righteousness, Dr. Glover aborts the sense of “rightness” that results in deconstructing the faith of another by design, believing that such is a form of violent expression, demoralizing one’s character, diminishing one’s worth, and dispiriting one’s integrity. Armed with an understanding that the power of prayer and trust in an unfailing God turns mountains into dust and storms into a breeze, Dr. Glover is a force to be reckoned with. Global in her vision, wise in her choices, and strong in her mission, Dr. Glover is unyielding in her belief that redemption through the Gospel of Jesus Christ brings hope to a dying world and that the church provides a community where identity can be claimed, belonging is realized, and differences are celebrated. Forthright in her stance that in fellowship with one another, laughter is renewed, joy is rekindled, and hope is revitalized, Dr. Glover is steadfast in her conviction that in community, triumphs are applauded and challenges are shared. It is with this declaration that Dr. Glover moves Forward in Hope: Pastor and People with God.
St. Paul Baptist Church History The history of St. Paul Baptist Church is the story of a people who have been blessed by God’s amazing grace for over a century! Through the years these blessings have included the leadership of many spirit-filled Pastors who were devoted to their charge of serving God’s people and giving inspired wisdom and service to the church and community. With their outstanding guidance and dedicated efforts the name of Christ was lifted up throughout the Montclair community. The founding Pastor Reverend T.T. Tucker was a man of great vision and insight. He worked tirelessly to build a church that would embrace the community, teach the Word, and lead the congregation to the Lord. Reverend Tucker held the first official meeting of the church in 1902 at the home of Mrs. Anna McGuinn who resided in Montclair. The church later relocated to Hartley Street with Reverend Tucker serving as Pastor for three years. After its inception, St. Paul Baptist Church benefited from the leadership of several pastors who positively impacted the growth of the church by their unique style of interpreting the Divine Call to ministry. During the three decades from 1906 to 1936, the church became increasingly recognized within the Montclair community. We are grateful to God for the Pastors who shepherded the church at that time: Reverend William Perry, Pastor E. E. Jackson, Pastor H. H. Waring, Pastor R. V. Peyton and Reverend A. O. Bell. Before the end of his tenure, Reverend Bell guided the establishment of a building fund for a new church. However he did not remain to see it through and resigned to become Pastor of the North Oakland Baptist Church in Oakland, California. In his term from 1937 to 1966, Reverend J.H. Billups was the longest serving Pastor at St. Paul. His focus included improving working relationships between the many clubs and auxiliaries so that a spirit of togetherness would prevail. Pastor Billups encouraged new members to take active roles in church organizations. He believed that the church would maintain sustainable growth if all members participated in church affairs. During his tenure the Gospel Chorus was formed, the Pastor’s Aid was reorganized, and the Social Work Department was revived. Reverend Billups believed in community outreach and developed a friendly and supportive relationship with other churches in the Montclair community. He also became an active member of the local YWCA and YMCA, the NAACP, the Interracial Committee, and the Minister’s Conference of Montclair in his effort to improve the status and living conditions of all people. It was also during Reverend Billups’ tenure that a new Baldwin pipe organ was purchased. Most significantly, October of 1957 marked the “Groundbreaking Celebration” for the new St. Paul Baptist Church at 119 Elm Street. When construction was completed, Pastor Billups delivered the first sermon on June 16, 1963. Pastor Billups remained with St. Paul Baptist Church until his death in February of 1966.
Reverend Calvin G. Sampson, who had served as Assistant Minister to Pastor Billups and had proven to be an invaluable asset to the church, was called to be to be the ninth Pastor of St. Paul. A dynamic and invigorating speaker, Pastor Sampson inspired many bold and progressive events through his service to the church and surrounding community. He took time to visit the sick, regularly taking them the “Good News” in a spirit of love and cheer. Pastor Sampson created a newsletter for the church bulletin, a calendar that noted all church activities and events, and a newspaper that informed everyone of church and community affairs. A most effective leader, Pastor Sampson organized church members to become active in many church clubs and services. He organized “The Voices of St. Paul”, The Men’s Club, The Women’s Day Committee, several basketball teams of varying ages for the church and community youth, and most importantly, a full term Bible study class for adults. Pastor Sampson recognized the importance of education and gained a Master of Divinity from Drew University while maintaining his busy schedule. Also desiring to validate achievement, he instituted a baccalaureate ceremony in June of each year to acknowledge graduates at each level of the academic experience. He also instituted scholarships for college-bound students. Reverend Sampson had been Pastor for five years when the mortgage for the new church was paid, and on May 14, 1972 the mortgage burning service was celebrated. Soon after that ceremony, he received and answered the call to become Pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church in New Rochelle, New York. After sixteen months of searching, a long-time and familiar friend was called into service as Interim Pastor in 1973. Reverend D.C. Rice who had come to the aid of the church on many occasions, once again answered the church’s call. He became the new Pastor in 1974. Several milestones were celebrated during Rev. Rice’s leadership. Among them, the church grew in numbers and the church’s Rules of Order were revised in 1974. Pastor Rice also instituted the 7:00 a.m. Candle Light Services for Thanksgiving and Christmas. He aided the church in installing a new air conditioning system, fully paying for it through pledges made by members and church organizations, donations from friends, and other sources. After three years of service as the Pastor, he resigned and moved with his family to Topping, Virginia. Pastor Marvin A. McMickle became Pastor of SPBC in January of 1977. This year coincided with the church’s seventyfifth anniversary. Bible study was of paramount concern to Rev. McMickle. He was a firm believer that the congregants should know the word of God for themselves. He taught Wednesday evening Bible Study himself. Reverend McMickle believed in maintaining strong links to various community projects. He, along with members of the church, made annual visits to Caldwell Prison to hold services. He served as President of the Montclair Branch of the NAACP and worked diligently to improve housing and redevelopment in Montclair. He actively pursued the well-being of the senior citizens and the underprivileged.
While at St. Paul, Pastor McMickle helped the church sponsor a trip to the Holy Land and Athens, Greece. Many members traveled with him and experienced events that will always be a special part of their memories. His son, Aaron James, was the first child born to a minister while serving at St. Paul, making his pastorate even more memorable. Reverend McMickle had served as Pastor for more than ten years when he received an invitation from the Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio. After careful consideration, he accepted their offer. Rev. Ercel Webb, a recently retired Pastor, answered the call in 1987 to serve as Interim Pastor. He was “a strong teacher of the Word” with a special concern for the well-being of the senior adult members. Although the congregation expressed great affection for him, Rev. Webb indicated that he was looking forward to enjoying his retirement and would not want to be considered to serve as Pastor. Rev. V. DuWayne Battle from Enfield, North Carolina became the church’s twelfth Pastor in March 1989. The family initially consisted of Pastor Battle, his wife Edith and son Thomas. A daughter, Mary Elizabeth, was born in May of the following year. As the second-longest serving Pastor in SPBC’s history, Pastor Battle encouraged the membership to extend the missionary efforts to other nations and brought about a renewed focus on fervent worship. Under Pastor Battle’s energetic leadership, many new ministries were added and new life given to existing ones. An 8:00 a.m. Sunday service was added, along with liturgical dancers, computer and music labs and S.T.E.P.(Study to Excel Program), the after-school program introduced to serve the membership as well as the community. Later, Children’s Church was offered in conjunction with the regular service. St. Paul’s core values – Worship, Service, Growth, Evangelism and Fellowship – was clearly shaped and defined under Pastor Battle’s leadership. Pastor Battle resigned from SPBC in June of 2003. Min. Adrian Backus’ tenure as Interim Pastor from 2003 – 2005 was marked by a Divinely-inspired ministry of spiritual healing as well as his devotion to visiting the sick and comforting the bereaved. These special gifts were particularly nurturing and appreciated during this transition period. Reverend Michael J. Cox of Houston, Texas was called to lead St. Paul as its new Senior Pastor. Rev. Cox’s first official sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 17, 2005. One of his first acts as Pastor was to invoke “60 Days of Prayer” to focus the congregation on discerning individual gifts and God’s will for the life of the church. He also led the church’s quick and compassionate response to the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina. Reverend Cox resigned in May 2010. In 2010, the Church was proud to have Reverend Deborah Spivey become the Interim Pastor. She had been the first female minister to be licensed by St. Paul. She served in the capacity of Interim Pastor until 2013. Rev. Spivey encouraged the church to focus on its directive to be “The Ideal Community”, regularly reminding congregants that fulfilling this Divine mission requires individual as well as corporate readiness. One of her areas of attention was on initiating a reorganization of the church’s internal structure to make it more relevant to current needs and the importance of corporate prayer.
Reverend Dr. Bernadette Glover answered the call to be the Interim Pastor in September 2013. She was elected as Senior Pastor in January 2016. Annual themes for the church’s focus have been: “Intentionally Connecting with God and Neighbor”, “Keep the Faith”, and currently “Forward In Hope”. Dr. Glover’s preaching and teaching with inspired interpretation of the Bible, while always including an invitation to salvation, have been centered on challenging believers to greater spiritual maturity. This deep concern has also been demonstrated in her intentional efforts to encourage an intergenerational and participatory church family. She is especially supportive of the youth being actively involved in the church’s worship and ministry. God has expanded Dr. Glover’s ministry beyond the local community. Her many opportunities to share the Word at other churches have allowed St. Paul members to develop strong Christian ties with other brethren. During this extended time of transition, both Interim Pastors, with God’s guidance, have effectively led the congregation through a period of Scripture-based introspection and renewal in preparation for new leadership. We are excited and grateful to God for blessing us with Dr. Glover as our new Senior Pastor. We have witnessed her commitment and obedience to His guidance. So we humbly and with thanksgiving declare “To God be the glory” as we write the next chapter in our history!
Faithful is He that calleth you – who will preserve your body, spirit and soul intact and wholly free from any sort of blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus – He can be trusted to make it so…. The Great Commission
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” 16

We prayed for a Sr. Pastor after God’s own heart, and He gave us the gift of you!
He gave us: A woman more precious than rubies. A Martha to our Mary and a Mary to our Martha. A mirror to show us the true image of God’s daughter. A sister who is with us, and who is for us. He gave us: A pillar to stand on exceeding what our natural eyes can see. A warrior who proclaims victory with the sword of His Holy word and authority. A reservoir of living waters, we no longer survive, but as sisters we thrive. An alabaster box filled with the fragrance of love. He gave us: A brilliant light, and, a beacon on a hill. A new vessel overflowed with the fresh wine of vision and hope. A woman of virtue, engrafted in Christ, walking according to His Holy will. A leader clothed in the fire of God, rooted in the fear of the Lord. He gave us a servant who shall be praised! We thank God for the abundant answer to our prayers! Love, The SIS Women’s Ministry

Hello St. Paul Baptist Church. I, Naimah Hester, came to this church at first as a care giver for Mrs. Young. Her devotion, even through her illness, is the will to praise the Lord. As I became to listen to this wonderful voice from God (Dr. Glover) every Sunday, she drew me closer than I have ever been with God. My first step was to join the church and become a member where I was led by the wonderful teachings of my church mom and dad, Deacon Herb and Renee Haynes. They answered all my questions and drew me closer to the Bible. Praise God for them. They fully do the work of God. As I became closer to the Bible, I knew that Jesus was my portion. I can’t express enough that St. Paul is my new found family and my personal Guide to God. Dr. Glover, you are an awesome tool of God, a prophet … a messenger...hope giver...peace maker, and I thank you for becoming the Pastor of St. Paul Baptist church, leading me back to my Salvation. Thanks St. Paul for opening up your doors and embracing with the love of God.
Naimah Hester

A Congratulatory Installation Message for Rev. Dr. Bernadette Glover as Senior Pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church As we move “Forward in Hope: Pastor and People with God,” The Scripture reminds us that “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” The Hebrew writer, in an attempt to teach us about faith, gives us a list of specific people who walked by faith and not by sight. We have seen the expression of your faith. Now, we are prepared to walk with you, by faith, as you demonstrate your desire to please God. May God give you the Grace to shepherd with His Divine Wisdom and with His Heart of Integrity. (Psalm 78:72) Congratulations from Minister Joseph Byron & Mrs. Beatrice Margo Andrews!

From
Bernard & Deneed Aigner’, Brandon & Marcus We like to extend our Heartfelt Congratulations To Our New Senior Pastor Reverend Dr. Bernadette Glover & St. Paul Baptist Church Congregation “TO GOD BE THE GLORY” (Ps. 122:1-9 I was glad when they said to me, “Let’s go to the house of the LORD.” Our feet are standing inside your gates, Jerusalem. Jerusalem is built to be a city where the people are united. All of the LORD’s tribes go to that city because it is a law in Israel to give thanks to the name of the LORD. The court of justice sits there. It consists of <<princes who are>> David’s descendants. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you prosper. May there be peace inside your walls and prosperity in your palaces.” For the sake of my relatives and friends, let me say, “May it go well for you!” For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek what is good for you.)
To God Be The Glory Great Things He Has Done! To my pastor and sister beloved, May God richly bless you and us as we continue in the Lord’s work together. Rev. Deborah L. Spivey
Congratulations, Grace, Mercy, Peace & Blessings, Reverend Dr. Bernadette Glover. Darryl L. Jeffries
