SALVATORE SCARPITTA: ART CONNECTED TO LIFE LUIGI SANSONE

For the American artist of Italian descent, Salvatore Scarpitta, life experience had a crucial impact on his artistic development, in particular his experiences of World War II. Salvatore Scarpitta is considered as energetic and multidisciplinary, as we shall see, he blended art with life in an attempt of changing society, seeking to find artistic inspiration beyond the material in a world highly dominated by spiritual values. One of Salvatore Scarpitta’s main themes was based on his curiosity and love for the tribes of Native Americans and their ancient culture. His composition, indeed, which combined the individually expressed poetry in other works in a harmonious and cohesive fashion of lines and meanings, is Canoe Hill from 1990. The name of the work was a dedication to the name of an Indian Navajo who Scarpitta personally knew. With much pride he actually even whore a typical necklace that was given to him by the Native American. As Scarpitta once remembered: ”that particular necklace had been made by Canoe Hill, a Native American who worked in one of New York’s metal skyscrapers on the ninetieth floor. The beads were made out of Venetian glass, which were brought to America and given to the Indians in exchange for furs. It is a gift which Canoe Hill gave me in exchange for a small Navajo rug, and it means a lot to me because it represents the exchange and the relationship between different cultures, that carries a rich symbolic idea, which also is an essential part of my work.“1 As a symbol of this union between cultures, Scarpitta added a typical Indian headdress in Canoe Hill, which also combines a touch of color and compositional freedom to the essential geometrical structure of the work. In the conclusion of his review on the Venice Biennale of 1993, Fabrizio D’Amico underlined the intercultural aspects of Scarpitta’s work. Italian, American, Native American Indians – probably the first and certainly one of the best who has crossed through colors and cultures and at the same time to unite them all together.“2 In regard to Scarpitta, there are two events which have had an impact on his personality. The first dates back to his boyhood when on 17 July 1930, on a quiet summer day, young Scarpitta, during summer holiday, was told by his father to help him clean his father’s sculpture studio in Hollywood. Scarpitta however refused to do so, so his father became so angry he chased his son around until they reached the garden and young Scarpitta finally managed to rescue himself by climbing up a big pepper tree to its highest branches. Unfortunately, he stayed on the tree for 11 days and eventually beat the world record! Between the tree’s great branches and with the help of his sister Yvonne, his brother Guy and other friends, he got enough food to eat, water to drink, and other necessary tools to build a small platform on which he could sleep. During his long adventure on the treetop, the family’s physician Joseph Jacobs who constantly kept an eye on him, eventually declared in an interview that such efforts were more of a mental than of a physical challenge and that Scarpitta had such strong 2. willpower, he could truly face any adversary opposing him.

Later, Scarpitta himself remembered how that incident proved to be so essential for his own artistic meditation: “That green pepper tree has been more stuck in my mind than any other painting I have ever seen in Europe. For instance, I even remember in full detail how the ants moved back and forward along the tree’s bark, more than any other sculpture I have seen so far.“3 This experience on the tree helped him to deeply strengthen his own personality and probably even helped him in a sort of way to survive and to face his second memorable experience that took place in Italy during his early twenties. In 1936 he then came to Rome in order to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts where he finally graduated in 1940. But after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor (7 December 1941) and the United States’ entry into World War II, life became more and more difficult for young Scarpitta, who at the same time was also an American citizen. Later in the summer of 1942 he was sent to internal exile in Marta, on the lake of Bolsena. His forced stay lasted until the first half of 1943, when he obtained permission by the Italian authorities to temporarily travel to Rome, and decided not to return to Marta again. On September 15, he and his wife left Rome to take refuge up in the mountains of Abruzzo in a place called Scanno, where months before also his parents and his sisters had found refuge. After September 8, the day of Italy’s armistice, Germany began to occupy strategic points in northern and central Italy, starting their military operation in Rome. In order to block the Allied advance from the south, the Germans had built a barrage of defense known as the Gustav Line, that began in Garigliano, crossed Cassino, and finally reached the mouth of Sangro.

Scanno lied only a few dozen kilometers from the Gustav line.

The place Scarpitta found himself at that time was suddenly guarded by German troops. For this reason, he soon took refuge in Fracture, a resort in the mountains above Scanno where he spent many months with groups of partisans, antifascists, displaced persons and disbanded soldiers. In May, Scarpitta and his family, with a group of eighty people, Italian soldiers, British and American paratroopers (for which acts as interpreter), partisans and soldiers of other nationalities 3. passed the lines at Castel di Sangro and reached the English command in Isernia. From here Scarpitta continued his trip to Naples, where he was then enlisted in the American army in the section for the Protection of Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives, based at the headquarters of the Allied Control Commission in Rome. In July 1945, he served in the Navy and was also assigned as an interpreter at the United States naval base in Palermo. In the spring of 1946 he was then transferred to the Navy of San Pedro, California, where he was dismissed from the US Naval Service on 10 April 1946.

After he spent a short time with his family in Hollywood, he then returned to Italy and settled in Rome, where he was able to resume his artistic activity. Some works of Scarpitta between 1945 and the mid-fifties were strongly characterized by a social content as they document the struggles of workers, the peace demonstrations, the protests against the death sentence of the couple Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, the danger of the atomic bomb, racial discrimination, in short he documents against all forms of oppression that undermine freedom and dignity of any human being. Other works instead were also dedicated to Afro-American Paul Robeson (1898-1976) who was a famous baritone, a lawyer and a theater actor, but above all a strong supporter of racial equality. He fought against all forms of racism and in favor of civil rights of African-Americans in the southern United States and of other populations such as the Aborigines in Australia.4 During his study in Rome between 1955 and 1957 in which he created a series of materialist paintings, some brightly colored and loaded with energy, Scarpitta later began a crucial phase of research which marked a turning point in his work. He literally speaking tore his oil works apart and reassembled them on a frame. Scarpitta later remembered the experience: “The color tubes were made out of cartridges, I however wanted an experience with my own bare hands. So I began to tear the oil paintings apart that just seemed hostile to me. For my own human experience I just had to do it. The 4.  For further details on the Paul Robeson see L. war had left marks of fear and revenge, so I had to take some risk and leave my fingerprints behind. I wanted to look for some hidden contact with nature and more complicated stuff. If I hadn’t done such a thing, I wouldn’t have recovered from the war I suppose.“5 After the experience with his torn oil paintings and the joining back together on the canvas, Scarpitta began, as he claimed, “a work with the purpose to sort out what had previously turn out to be rather disappointing. I had to retrieve that lost material in some way, so I came up with the rather iconoclastic idea by transforming the canvas from its bad shape to a more ‘surreal’, almost abstract condition, as a result of the canvas’ raw and rough appearance. It seemed no longer torn, but rather pulled“.6 So the raw canvas with all its natural qualities, sometimes soaked with organic colors (wine, coffee, lime, tincture of iodine), turned out to be the main subject of Scarpitta’s work, which he folded and shaped to add some tension, leavening, plots, depressions and twists, while creating original and dynamic compositions. It represented an “artistic genre,“ as Dorfles writes, “that – even at that time – was significantly different to those usually abstract pictures that appeared inside and around Rome (art).“7 After more than two decades in Italy, Scarpitta returned to the United States in December 1958 and began a long-lasting professional relationship and friendship with Leo Castelli who he previously met in Rome the year before. After having enjoyed his work Fasce (stripes) which he exposed in 1958 in the gallery La Tartaruga, he decided to invite him around to exhibit his work in his new gallery in New York in January 1959. In 1964 in his New York studio on the fourth floor of 333 Park Avenue South, Scarpitta used leftovers to build his first racing car, Rajo Jack, honoring the African-American 5. pilot with the same name. The car which was a splitting image of the racing car he had seen as a child in California, was meant as a personal act of protest, a political act of social protest by Scarpitta against the discrimination of the black pilot, Rajo Jack, who was banned to compete on America’s official circuits. After he finished Rajo Jack, Scarpitta continued his intensive research and reconstruction work of automobiles between 1964 and 1969, that led up to two shows at the Leo Castelli Gallery in 1965 and at the Leo Castelli Warehouse, in 1969, in which he displayed a number of racing cars. While his building of racing cars was a pure result of his childhood memories and experiences as a young artist in Los Angeles, where he fanatically went to visit the circuit Legion Ascot Speedway many times, the ”sleds” he began to build in 1973 were inspired by the Native American culture. Since his childhood he had always been obsessed by their culture, he wanted to recreate a social sense which people connect to the sleds. ”I worked on the slides all by myself in loneliness.

But I wanted to try to create a deep social sense: I wanted to create the flavor of a chorus and a civilization”.8 As he once remembered in a monologue text, he came up with the idea of building the sleds while he was working on a wooden frame to build one of his racing cars, only that at a certain point the wheels were missing. “So now I had this wooden frame without the wheels. But for what did I need the wheels?

Why use wheels? You already have driven your emotions around the world for 56 years. Why drive them? Instead you are pulling them, that is what you’re really doing. So I am actually pulling them. Therefore it’s more a sled. There is no doubt about that – it is a sled.”15 The sleds he built were made out of different materials and held together by soaked strips with resins and organic colors, recalling a sort of interaction with the environment so not moving while also evoking a silent journey, the journey of the spirit towards new destinations. They represented the spiritual energy of the origins, when each individual considered his life as a journey full of struggles. He argued that “the sled was part of every man’s memory. I worked on the sleds by myself in solitude.

create a true sense of a chorus and a civilization”.16 Scarpitta had the ability to create the composition of his works by using everyday objects such as skis, which were idealized and given a new higher meaning, by reaching a new sphere of reality expressing deep existential messages. These messages are associated to his work Peat Bog Sled of 1992, a co m position of synthesis between skiing and sledding, a very original creation that recaptured the sense of rescue and survival, two themes which always reappear in Scarpitta’s work, since his earliest pictures with the bandages of the 1950s up to the sleds of the 1970s.The theme of the journey as a “transit” of a lifetime is recaptured by Scarpitta in many other works such as Egg Eater, Stalker Face, Face Trap 1, Face Trap 2, Egg Walker, all of 1992, all made with wood, felt, metal, rope and bandages. In all these works the symbolic form of a foot which assembles itself with other curious structures, gains interpretative psychological meanings of different human personalities. In both life and art, for Scarpitta two inseparable elements, he always followed an individual path leading him to a deeply rooted content inside every human being. When speaking of his work, he used to say: ”My findings and my scrap should be understood as ‘pieces of life’ regarding humanity in its most essential and peculiar expressions [...] I have loved human beings, so I drew up many arguments from humanity itself.”9 He therefore tells us not only to concentrate on the external aspect of his work, but also to observe, to investigate and search for ”the sense of a universal unity” in his work, “hoping that anyone steps beyond his limits and is able to see things beyond the objective facts. It is the process of transmutation of the spirits into physicality, which is purely artistic, and which I always aim to achieve as an artist. This is my morale, my ethics. To find in the visual presence, which often appears in the form of scraps of life, different couplings that make me understand that this work, if it is art, leads somewhere else. This elsewhere is in the common story of everyone, which we all encounter sooner or later. Birth, death or violence, to simply feel part of

nature.”10 In the year 1985 Scarpitta made some drawings he called T.M.I. with a racer, which were meant to expose the nuclear disaster at Three Mile Island. In the drawings, silhouettes of nuclear power plants emit radioactive clouds emerging behind a row of simple racing cars. The accident that occurred at Three Mile Island on 28 March 1979, was a partial meltdown of the nuclear energy core in the center of the island which lied along the Susquehanna River in Dauphin County in Pennsylvania. The accident happened only a few miles away from Scarpitta’s home and his studio in the village of New Chester. At that time it had been the worst nuclear accident in the United States leading to the release of a significant amount of radioactive gas into the environment. for Scarpitta art proved to be a fundamental means to establish a dialogue between human beings as he makes two sides compete with each other: the clean, shiny, white cool art gallery and museum walls in contrast to the mud, the dust and the heat of racing tracks. As Scarpitta was a great car enthusiast, in 1985, after a long working period, in his studiogarage in Baltimore, in Maryland, he finally managed to fulfill one of his childhood dreams. Building a properly working racing car (dirt track racer) called the Sal Scarpitta Special, able to drive along the clay slopes in Maryland and Pennsylvania by the times’ greatest champions. These kind of races were deeply rooted in the culture of lower and middle class workers and farmers. So Scarpitta decided to form his own team and to even compete in official competitions. In 1986, he put the Sal Gambler Special on the circuit, a powerful car of 700-800 HP of the super sprint category, driven by Greg O ‘Neil and developed by engine specialist and mechanic Walt Shriver. All Scarpitta’s work which was absolutely coherent with his way of thinking and behaving originated from his rich life experiences, allowing him to use his creative energy to continuously reconfirm his artistic sensibility. He stated: “I am a ‘contenutista’. I place my emphasis on the content, for instance, by referring to life itself, just as an artist should deal with the material. By inventing something from scratch, just like all of us back in 1945, in America, but also in Siberia, or even like Robinson Crusoe on his deserted island. What 10. matters is that whatever is given to you has the purpose for you to express any situation, the content you want to transmit.

I don’t want to talk about formalism. But any result without a shape is a failure. The difficulty lies within ability to make the content last, to make last a long time, not only for a season but for a trajectory. When I talk about the world of women, I mean the trajectory of women,which lasts for life. We have so much to learn from the women [...] If any work of art only expresses only male polarity then it can be considered a failure. My paintings are paintings by birth. Those large crevices which open up the space, which one may interpret as spaces of a TV, in real life emphasize the moment of birth.”11 Between 1984 and 1985 Scarpitta, with the help of Joan Bankemper, created a series of three videos that revealed his passion for car r a cing and his natural anti-militarist spirit, which were projected for the first time in Italy on the occasion of his own exhibition at the Pavilion of Contemporary Art in Milan, in 1985. His video Sal is Racer (1984, 20 minutes) is a psychodrama in which the artist himself states, driven between fantasy and reality, that the part of a man who first imagines himself an artist, and then imagines himself a racing car driver, and by the end completely estranges himself from the reality of the world.12 In his second video, Potato Masher (1985, 20 minutes), Scarpitta wears a military uniform and mimics the actions of a soldier on the battlefield.

It is a remarkable documentary of general war denunciation and of the devastating psychological consequences of a human being. His third video, Racer Tatoo (1985, 4 minutes), is a short documentary shot on Lincoln Speedway circuit in which Scarpitta poetically describes the emotions which racing drivers feel during the races. In 1986 Scarpitta created another short video, called Message to Leo (Racer’s Report), in which the artist himself talks about his experiences on the slopes of Maryland and Pennsylvania to Leo Castelli, his art dealer and racing car sponsor. Scarpitta refers to this video saying: “It’s my way of talking with Leo Castelli. Every two or three months I tell him the latest stories that just happened.

happened, if we won the race or not. [...] Photographs and videos document my experiences in America. I do not know if it’s really art, I’ll only find out if other people continue to see it.”13 In October 1973 in the courtyard of the Milan gallery “L’Uomo e l’Arte”, during the exhibition Carosi-Scarpitta, carro leggero Lince (1940), 1973 the Lynx armored car was presented to the public for the first time. Originally a military vehicle of World War II it was later rebuilt by Scarpitta and his friend Fulvio Carosi, a car collector and an expert of rebuilding vintage machines. In January 1973, both friends discovered and bought the Lynx, they horizontally cut the automobile into two parts and with missing pieces that were provided by a car demolition company called Gambettola (Forlì) after a long and patient work managed to rebuild the whole armored automobile and make it fully functional again. At the show mentioned above, the automobile was presented with three large tarps in which the emblem of the Red Cross was stuck to the ground crossing on top of the vehicle, forming an impressive X. For the first time, that particular shape of an X appeared in this installation, which in his later works was often indicated with safety belts often.

In this installation, the cross ribbons were a symbol of seizing the Lynx, associated as a vehicle of aggression. Scarpitta tames the vehicle and closes the mouth of the barrel machine gun welding with a round iron. The color of the entire military structure of steel, replaced by pink sand, during the set-up was tapped by fat, expressing the warning: “Do not touch!

This is a reality that should not be touched!” Also the sheets with the red cross are filled with water, as if the artist wanted to purify and redeem the vehicle from its original load of death. He therefore aimed to transform a machine built to destroy anything harmless into a sort of symbol of choice between good and evil, between love and hate, between life and death. An army tank, according to Scarpitta, “can always turn itself into a peaceful milk-delivery pickup truck once it is tied up and arrested”. inspired towed structures, with some sculptures from the series Face Trap and other works with similar lines. In his assigned room Scarpitta laid the sledges on the light grey floor and turned the border around the sledges into a darker grey turn giving vital energy to the sledge. Grease, oil and lubricant are essential elements and continuously reappear in Scarpitta’s artistic repertoir, symbolizing the social part that created a link between the artist and the automobile team that were often present inside and around his garage- studio.

Scarpitta’s idea of art was strongly connected to life, art as a social experience. In fact, these two unconventional masters drivers carried art out of the galleries and museums and put them in nature, on far away islands, in city parks, garage workshops, racing tracks and many other places where new forms of energy originate and allow the audience to feel particularly involved during their interaction with the art.

Besides his love for nature strongly believed that experiences through art could create something that had the capability of encouraging human life towards new essential ways. This is why the artist’s sleds were not only meant to travel along the surface, but also as symbols of departure heading towards a destination towards the world of the spirits which truly exceeds reality as we know it. Scarpitta’s sledges represent a social manifestation of collective energy.

Per l’americano di origine italiana Salvatore Scarpitta fu determinante nella sua ricerca artistica l’esperienza della seconda guerra mondiale. Artista energetico e multidisciplinare, come vedremo, ha in modo totale amalgamato l’arte con la vita nel tentativo di cambiare la società, cercando di andare attraverso l’ispirazione artistica oltre la materialità, in un mondo ricco di elevati valori spirituali.

L’interesse e l’amore per le tribù dei nativi americani e per la loro cultura è anche uno dei temi fondamentali dell’arte di Scarpitta, infatti la sua composizione, che unisce le poetiche espresse singolarmente in altre opere in una coesione armoniosa di linee e di significati, è Hill Canoe, 1990, dedicata al nome di un navajo che Scarpitta conobbe personalmente e di cui portava con orgoglio una tipica collana pellerossa avuta da lui, come racconta: ”Questa collana è stata fatta da Hill Canoe, un pellerossa che lavorava sui grattacieli di New York, sui tralicci metallici al novantesimo piano. Le perle sono di vetro veneziano, che veniva portato in America e dato agli indiani in cambio delle pellicce. È un oggetto che Hill Canoe mi ha dato in cambio di un piccolo tappeto navajo, e ci tengo molto proprio perché rappresenta lo scambio e la relazione tra culture diverse, portando così con sé un ricco contenuto simbolico, come avviene nelle mie opere”.1 Come sigillo di questa unione tra culture Scarpitta ha inserto in Hill Canoe un tipico copricapo indiano, che costituisce anche una nota di colore e di libertà compositiva alla fondamentale struttura geometrica dell’opera. Fabrizio D’Amico, a conclusione di una sua recensione sulla Biennale di Venezia del 1993, mette in risalto proprio l’aspetto interculturale ricorrente nel lavoro di Scarpitta, infatti egli elogia la “splendida sala degli sci, delle slitte, dei copricapi, delle tele strappate, delle macchine da corsa di Salvatore Scarpitta: italiano, americano, pellerossa, il primo forse e certo uno dei maggiori che abbia 1. davvero attraversato e unito culture e mondi distanti”.2 Due sono gli eventi che hanno influenzato la sua personalità, il primo risale all’adolescenza quando il 17 luglio del 1930, una tranquilla giornata estiva, il giovane Scarpitta, in vacanza dalla scuola, alla richiesta del padre di aiutarlo a pulire lo studio in cui lavorava come scultore, a Hollywood, rispose con un rifiuto, scatenando l’indignazione e l’ira paterna.

Inseguito dal padre, corse in giardino e con un balzo salì sul grande albero del pepe, raggiungendo i rami più alti per mettersi momentaneamente al sicuro. Per una serie di curiose circostanze egli rimarrà su quell’albero fino al giorno 11 del mese successivo, battendo il primato mondiale! Tra i rami del grande albero egli, con l’aiuto da terra di sua sorella Yvonne, del fratello Guy e degli amici, riuscì a procurarsi cibo, acqua e materiale per costruirsi una piccola piattaforma su cui dormire. Il medico di famiglia Joseph Jacobs che tenne sotto osservazione il giovane Scarpitta durante la sua avventura, dichiarò in un’intervista: ”Sembra che un’impresa di questo genere sia più una prova mentale che fisica. A mio parere Salvatore ha la forza di volontà per poter affrontare qualsiasi avversità gli si opponga”. Lo stesso Scarpitta racconta quanto quell’episodio sia stato significativo per la sua meditazione artistica: “Quel verde albero del pepe è rimasto impresso nella mia mente molto più di qualsiasi dipinto visto in Europa, e riesco a rievocare rapidamente e con più incisività l’andirivieni delle formiche sulla sua corteccia che qualsiasi scultura”.3 Quest’esperienza sull’albero contribuì profondamente a temprare il carattere di Scarpitta e probabilmente lo preparò in qualche modo a sopravvivere e ad affrontare il secondo evento che in Italia lo coinvolse poco più che ventenne. Egli era giunto a Roma nel 1936 per studiare alla Reale Accademia di Belle Arti dove si diploma nel 1940, ma a seguito dell’attacco giapponese alla base americana di Pearl Harbor (7 dicembre 1941) e all’entrata in guerra degli Stati Uniti, per il giovane Scarpitta, cittadino americano, iniziano giorni difficili, tanto che nell’estate del 1942 egli viene mandato al confino a Marta, sul lago di 2. Bolsena. Il soggiorno forzato dura fino alla prima metà del 1943, quando, ottenuto il permesso dall’autorità italiane di recarsi temporaneamente a Roma, decide di non far ritorno a Marta. Il 15 settembre insieme alla moglie lascia Roma per rifugiarsi a Scanno, sulle montagne abruzzesi dove da qualche mese erano sfollati dall’abitazione romana anche i genitori e le sorelle di Scarpitta. Dopo l’8 settembre, giorno del annuncio dell’armistizio, la reazione della Germania alla resa italiana non si fa aspettare e le prime colonne tedesche occupano i punti strategici dell’Italia settentrionale e centrale, a cominciare da Roma. Per bloccare l’avanzata alleata dal Sud i tedeschi costituiscono uno sbarramento di difesa conosciuto come Linea Gustav, che dal Garigliano, attraverso Cassino, giunge alla foce del Sangro. Scanno dista solo qualche decina di chilometri da questa linea e la zona dove si trova Scarpitta è spesso rastrellata dalle truppe tedesche; per questo motivo si rifugia a Frattura, una località sulle montagne sopra Scanno dove egli convive per mesi con gruppi di partigiani, antifascisti, sfollati e soldati sbandati. In maggio Scarpitta e la famiglia, con un gruppo di ottanta persone, militari italiani, paracadutisti inglesi e americani (per i quali fa da interprete), partigiani e militari di altre nazionalià, passano le linee a Castel di Sangro e raggiungono il comando inglese a Isernia. Da qui Scarpitta prosegue per Napoli dove si arruola nell’esercito americano nella sezione per la salvaguardia dei monumenti, le belle arti e gli archivi, con sede presso il quartier generale della Allied Control Commission, a Roma. Nel luglio 1945 Scarpitta presta servizio nella marina americana ed è assegnato come interprete presso la base navale USA di Palermo; nella primavera del 1946 viene trasferito a quella di San Pedro, in California, dove il 10 aprile si congeda dal US Naval Service. Dopo un breve periodo trascorso con la famiglia a Hollywood ritorna in Italia e si stabilisce a Roma dove riprende la sua attività artistica. Alcune opere di Scarpitta tra il 1945 e la metà degli anni Cinquanta sono caratterizzate da un forte contenuto sociale, esse documentano le lotte dei lavoratori, le manifestazioni per la pace, le proteste contro la condanna a morte dei coniugi Ethel e Julius Rosenberg, il pericolo della bomba atomica, la discriminazione razziale, e in genere sono contro ogni forma di oppressione che pregiudichi la libertà e

la dignità dell’essere umano. Altre due opere sono dedicate all’afro-americano Paul Robeson (1898-1976), famoso baritono ma anche avvocato e attore di teatro, ma soprattutto strenuo sostenitore dell’uguaglianza razziale, che si battè contro ogni forma di razzismo e a favore dei diritti civili degli afro-americani nel sud degli Stati Uniti e di altre popolazioni come gli aborigeni in Australia.4 Nel suo studio romano dopo una serie di dipinti materici realizzati nel periodo 19551957, alcuni dai colori accesi, carichi di fasci di energia, Scarpitta inizia una fase cruciale di ricerca che segna una svolta nel suo lavoro, infatti egli strappa letteralmente i suoi lavori a olio e li ricompone sul telaio. Così Scarpitta ricorda quell’esperienza: “I tubetti di colore erano cartucce, io invece volevo perseguire la preda a mani nude. Incominciai a strappare la tela a olio che mi era diventata del tutto ostile.

Era una necessità legata alla mia esperienza umana; la guerra mi aveva segnato tra paura e vendetta, bisognava che rischiassi di lasciare le mie impronte digitali. Volevo un contatto con l’indole più nascosta e difficile delle cose. Se non lo avessi fatto non sarei guarito dalla guerra”.5 Dopo l’esperienza dei quadri a olio strappati e ricomposti sul telaio, Scarpitta avvia, come egli stesso racconta, “un lavoro per ripulire quello che era stato un gesto abbastanza esasperato.

Quella materia perduta in qualche modo dovevo ricuperarla, così ho ripulito questa idea che era abbastanza iconoclasta e ho portato la tela da una condizione malvagia ad una condizione più ‘surreale’, quasi astratta, dovuta alla tela cruda e grezza, non più strappata, ma tirata”.6 Dunque la tela grezza con tutte le sue qualità naturali, a volte imbevuta di colori organici (vino, caffè, calce, tintura di iodio), diventa la principale materia dei lavori di Scarpitta, che egli piega e 4. foggia infondendole tensioni, lievitazioni, intrecci, depressioni e torsioni, creando originali e dinamiche composizioni, “un genere artistico”, come scrive Gillo Dorfles, “che – già allora – si differenziava nettamente dagli schemi astratti in uso a Roma e dintorni (artistici)”.7 Dopo oltre due decenni trascorsi in Italia Scarpitta nel dicembre 1958 ritorna negli Stati Uniti e inizia un durevole rapporto di lavoro e amicizia con Leo Castelli che aveva conosciuto a Roma l’anno precedente e, avendo apprezzato i suoi lavori realizzati con le “fasce” esposti nel 1958 alla Galleria La Tartaruga, lo aveva invitato a esporre nel gennaio 1959 nella sua nuova galleria a New York. Nel 1964, a New York, nello studio al quarto piano del 333 di Park Avenue South, Scarpitta realizza artigianalmente, con materiali di recupero, la sua prima auto da corsa, Rajo Jack, 1964, in onore dell’omonimo pilota afro-americano; quest’auto, un facsimile di un’automobile da corsa che aveva visto da ragazzo in California, rappresenta un personale atto di contestazione, un atto politico di protesta sociale di Scarpitta verso la discriminazione di un pilota nero, Rajo Jack, a cui fu vietato di gareggiare sulle piste ufficiali degli Stati Uniti. Dopo la realizzazione di Rajo Jack il complesso lavoro di ricerca e di ricostruzione delle autombili prosegue per Scarpitta dal 1964 al 1969 e culmina con due mostre alla Leo Castelli Gallery nel 1965 e alla Leo Castelli Warehouse, nel 1969, in cui espone una serie di automobili da corsa. Se la costruzione delle auto da corsa scaturiva dai ricordi e dalle esperienze adolescenziali dell’artista a Los Angeles, quando frequentava assiduamente il circuito di Legion Ascot Speedway, le “slitte” che Scarpitta inizia a costruire nel 1973, sono ispirate alla cultura dei nativi americani che egli ha tanto amato fin da bambino, esse affiorano silenziose attraverso il tunnel del tempo, dall’infanzia dell’umanità fino a noi: “Ho lavorato alle mie slitte in solitudine, ma ho cercato di infondervi un profondo senso sociale: volevo che trasudassero il sapore di una coralità e di una civiltà”, afferma Scarpitta.8 Come ricorderà lo stesso artista, in un testo in forma di monologo, l’idea di costruire le slitte gli viene mentre è alle 7. prese con un telaio di legno per costruire una nuova auto, per la quale però gli mancavano le ruote: ”Dunque, c’è lì questo telaio di legno, allora la risposta a questo è: ‘Perché la ruota? Perché le ruote? Perché le ruote? Hai trascinato le tue emozioni in giro per il mondo per 56 anni. Perché guidarlo? Trascinalo, è quello che stai facendo’. Allora l’ho trascinato e andava bene. È una slitta. Non c’è dubbio è una slitta”.9 Le slitte create da Scarpitta, costruite con i materiali più svariati e tenute insieme da fasce imbevute di resine e colori organici, sottratte all’interazione con l’ambiente, dunque statiche, evocano un viaggio silenzioso, il viaggio dello spirito verso nuove mete. Esse rappresentano l’energia spirituale delle origini, quando ogni individuo considerava la propria vita un travagliato viaggio alla ricerca dell’assoluto: ”Una slitta è nella memoria di ogni uomo”, dichiara l’artista.

“Ho lavorato alle mie slitte in solitudine, ma ho cercato di infondervi un profondo senso sociale: volevo che trasudassero il sapore di una coralità e di una civiltà”.10 Scarpitta possiede la capacità di elaborare la composizione delle sue opere utilizzando oggetti di uso comune come ad esempio gli sci, che vengono idealizzati e traslati a un significato “alto” acquistando una nuova realtà, quali veicoli di profondi messaggi esistenziali; a essi si riallaccia Peat Bog Sled, 1992, una composizione di sintesi tra lo sci e la slitta, una creazione originalissima che rivive la nobile finalità del soccorso e della sopravvivenza, due temi ricorrenti nei lavori di Scarpitta, dai quadri con le bende degli anni Cinquanta alle slitte dei primi anni Settanta. Il tema del cammino come “transito” di un’intera esistenza è ripreso da Scarpitta in numerose altre opere come Egg Eater, Face Stalker, Face Trap 1, Face Trap 2, Egg Walker, tutte del 1992, realizzate in legno, feltro, metallo, corda e bende; in queste la simbolica forma del piede, assemblata ad altre curiose strutture, acquista psicologici significati interpretativi dei vari caratteri umani.

parlando del suo lavoro, afferma: ”I miei reperti e rottami rimaneggiati e intesi come tracce o ‘brandelli di vita’ riguardano l’umanità nelle sue più essenziali e peculiari espressioni [...] Ho amato tanto gli uomini, dall’umanità ho tratto argomenti.”11 Egli invita quindi a non soffermarsi solamente sull’aspetto esteriore dei suoi lavori, ma a osservare, approfondire e cercare in essi ”il senso dell’unità universale”: ”si spera che chi vede vedrà oltre il fatto oggettivo sotto i suoi occhi, e lo trascenda. È il processo della trasmutazione della fisicità in spirito, che è un fatto specificamente artistico, e a cui credo sempre come obiettivo del mio modo di essere artista. Questa è la mia morale, la mia etica: trovare nella presenza visiva, che spesso è sotto la forma dei rottami della vita, altri agganci che portano a capire che questo lavoro, se è arte, conduce altrove. L’altrove sta nella storia comune a tutti, attraverso i passaggi che tutti incontriamo prima o poi. La nascita, la morte, la violenza, il ritrovarsi parte della natura.”12 Nel 1985 Scarpitta esegue alcuni disegni intitolati T.M.I. con Racer, che denunciano il disastro nucleare di Three Mile Island, dove sagome di centrali nucleari, che sprigionano nubi radioattive, emergono dietro una innocua auto da corsa. L’incidente di Three Mile Island, avvenuto il 28 marzo del 1979, fu una parziale fusione (meltdown) del “nocciolo” nucleare nella centrale sull’omonima isola lungo il fiume Susquehanna, nella Contea di Dauphin in Pennsylvania, a pochi chilometri dalla casastudio di Scarpitta, nel villaggio di New Chester. Fu il più grave incidente nucleare negli Stati Uniti e portò al rilascio di una quantità significativa di gas radioattivo nell’ambiente.

L’unione tra il mondo naturale e quello umano è evidenziata da Scarpitta nella sua installazione Starlaera II (il titolo proviene dal nome della località alpina svizzera di Starlera che l’artista visitò nei primi anni Settanta) realizzata nel 1980 in occasione della mostra Temporal Structures: an Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition, tenutasi nel parco di Wave Hill, nel Bronx, nelle vicinanze del fiume Hudson. da una serie di ampi teloni, su cui era impresso il tipico simbolo della Croce Rossa, che sovrastavano e in parte si affossavano in quella che era stata la piscina annessa alla casa di Mark Twain, tra i rami degli alberi e una fitta sterpaglia.

Scarpitta quindi lancia il suo messaggio di salvaguardia della natura che chiede soccorso tramite i teli della Croce Rossa installati in una zona di abbandono ecologico un tempo rigogliosa.

Secondo Scarpitta l’arte è mezzo fondamentale per instaurare un dialogo tra uomini ed ecco allora che egli sposta la competizione dalle nitide, immacolate, fredde pareti delle gallerie d’arte e dei musei al fango, alla polvere, al calore delle piste da corsa. Scarpitta appassionato di auto dopo un lungo periodo di lavoro, nel 1985, porta a compimento nel suo studio-garage di Baltimora, nello stato del Maryland, uno dei suoi sogni di gioventù: la costruzione di una macchina da corsa funzionante (dirt track racer), la Sal Scarpitta Special, in grado di correre sulle piste in terra battuta del Maryland e della Pennsylvania con i maggiori campioni del momento: questo tipo di corse è molto radicato nella cultura dei lavoratori delle classi medio-basse, soprattutto tra gli agricoltori. Scarpitta decide dunque di formare una propria scuderia e di competere nelle gare ufficiali. Nel 1986 mette in pista Sal Gambler Special, una potente auto di 700-800 HP, della categoria super sprint, guidata da Greg O’ Neil e messa a punto dal meccanico Walt Shriver, uno specialista di motori. Tutto il lavoro di Scarpitta, in assoluta coerenza con il suo modo di pensare e di agire, si basa sull’esperienza della vita, da cui egli attinge l’energia creativa che gli consente un continuo rinnovamento sul piano della sensibilità artistica: ”Io sono un contenutista. Basandomi sul contenuto, cioè sul riferimento alla vita stessa, nel momento in cui si agisce da artista la materia deve essere egualmente inventata proprio come abbiamo fatto noi partendo da zero nel ‘45, anche stando in America, in Siberia o, come Robinson Crusoe, in un’isola deserta. La materia è ciò che ti viene dato proprio per estrinsecare la situazione, il contenuto che si intende veicolare. Non voglio parlare di formalismo, ma un risultato senza forma sarebbe un fallimento. La difficoltà sta nella capacità di far durare il contenuto, di farlo vivere a lungo, non per una stagione ma su una traiettoria. E qui voglio citare

il mondo femminile, la traiettoria delle donne, che traccia la continuazione della vita. Ed è proprio dalle donne che noi uomini abbiamo molto da imparare, anche a livello intellettuale [...] Se un’opera d’arte esprime solo la polarità maschile è un fallimento. Le mie tele sono tele da parto. I grandi pertugi che apro nella superficie, che qualcuno potrebbe interpretare come gli spazi di un televisore, sottolineano il momento della nascita”. Tra il 1984 e il 1985 Scarpitta, con l’assistenza di Joan Bankemper, realizza una serie di tre video che documentano la sua passione per le corse automobilistiche e il suo innato spirito antimilitarista, che vengono proiettati per la prima volta in Italia in occasione della personale dell’artista al Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea di Milano, nel 1985. Il video Sal is racer (1984, 20 minuti) è uno psicodramma in cui lo stesso artista recita, tra fantasia e realtà, la parte di un uomo che immagina di essere prima un artista, poi un pilota di auto da corsa e infine si estranea completamente dalla realtà del mondo. Nel secondo video, Potato Masher (1985, 20 minuti), Scarpitta indossa una divisa militare e mima le azioni di un soldato sul campo di battaglia: è un formidabile documento di denuncia della guerra in generale e delle sue devastanti conseguenze sulla psiche umana. Il terzo video, Racer Tatoo (1985, 4 minuti), è un breve documentario girato sul circuito di Lincoln Speedway in cui Scarpitta racconta in tono poetico le emozioni che provano i piloti durante le gare.

Nel 1986 Scarpitta realizza un altro breve video, Message to Leo (Racer’s Report), in cui lo stesso artista mette al corrente Leo Castelli, suo gallerista e sponsor per le corse d’auto, delle sue esperienze sulle piste del Maryland e della Pennsylvania.

A proposito di questo ultimo filmato Scarpitta dice:” È il mio modo di comunicare con Leo Castelli sull’avventura della nostra piccola scuderia da corsa. Ogni due o tre mesi gli mando la storia degli ultimi avvenimenti. Lui non viene, non è il suo mondo, però mi chiede cosa è successo, se abbiamo vinto. [...] Fotografia e video documentano le mie esperienze in America. Non so se è arte, lo è se gli altri continueranno a guardarla”.13 Il grasso in quanto associato ai motori è un materiale che ha affascinato e con cui è venuto in contatto Scarpitta fin dall’adolescenza, quando frequentava 13. assiduamente il circuito delle auto da corsa di Legion Ascot e i garage- officina dei piloti; il grasso in seguito, come vedremo, è divenuto un elemento ricorrente nei lavori e nelle installazioni dell’artista. Nell’ottobre 1973, nel cortile della galleria milanese L’Uomo e l’Arte, in occasione della mostra Carosi-Scarpitta, carro leggero Lince (1940), viene presentata al pubblico per la prima volta l’autoblindo Lince, un mezzo militare della seconda guerra mondiale ricostruito da Scarpitta e dal suo amico Fulvio Carosi, collezionista di auto ed esperto di ricostruzioni di macchine d’epoca. Nel gennaio 1973 i due amici avevano trovato e acquistato la Lince, tagliata orizzontalmente in due parti e con pezzi mancanti, da una ditta di demolizioni d’auto a Gambettola (Forlì); dopo un lungo e paziente lavoro ricostruiscono l’intero blindato e lo rendono perfettamente funzionante. La Lince viene presentata nella citata mostra circondata da tre grandi teloni con lo stemma della Croce rossa bloccata al suolo da grosse cinghie fatte costruire appositamente che, incrociandosi sulla parte superiore del veicolo, formano un’imponente X. La forma della X, le cinghie, le cinture di sicurezza, che come si è visto ricorrono spesso nelle opere dell’artista, in questo caso compaiono per la prima volta in un’installazione. Dunque le cinghie incrociate contribuiscono a immobilizzare e “catturare” la Lince, strumento di aggressività, che viene così domato e poi disarmato da Scarpitta: infatti egli blocca la mitraglia saldando all’imboccatura della canna un tondo di ferro. Il colore militare dell’intera struttura di acciaio, sostituito da un rosa sabbia, durante l’allestimento viene dall’artista picchiettato di grasso, per trasmettere un avvertimento: ”Non toccare! Questa è una realtà da non toccare!” Inoltre i teloni con la croce rossa sono riempiti d’acqua, quasi l’artista volesse purificare e redimere il mezzo dal suo originale carico di morte. Così egli ha voluto trasformare una macchina costruita per distruggere in un oggetto innocuo che assurge a simbolo di come l’uomo possa scegliere tra il bene e il male, tra l’odio e l’amore, tra la vita e la morte. Un carro armato, dichiara Scarpitta, “può diventare pacifico come un camioncino per la consegna del latte se viene legato e bloccato”. Nel 1993 in occasione della sua partecipazione alla Biennale di Venezia con una sala personale, Scarpitta espone un’auto da corsa, alcune slitte

e strutture da traino ispirate al mondo dei nativi americani, alcune sculture della serie Face Trap altre opere con le tipiche fasce. Nella sala a lui assegnata Scarpitta posiziona le slitte sul pavimento grigio chiaro e per dare un’energia vitale alle slitte getta intorno a esse sul pavimento uno strato di grasso scuro che incornicia e potenzia le opere. Grasso, olio e lubrificante sono elementi essenziali presenti costantemente nel mondo artistico di Scarpitta che rappresentano inoltre il fluido sociale che univa l’artista ai vari collaboratori della sua scuderia automomilistica fatta da validi meccanici e piloti che gravitavano intorno a lui e al suo garage-studio.

Salvatore Scarpitta ha ideato un’arte fortemente connessa alla vita, un’arte esperienza, antropologica e sociale, infatti è uno spirito libero e anticonvenzionale che hanno portato l’arte al di fuori dalle gallerie e dai musei, per collocarla tra la natura, in un’isola lontana, in un parco di città, in un garage officina, su un circuito automobilistico, dove scaturiscono nuove energie creative che permettono allo spettatore coinvolto di interagire con l’arte stessa. L’opera di Scarpitta è imperniata dall’amore per la natura, ma soprattutto l’energia creativa e la certezza che le esperienze realizzate attraverso l’arte creino qualcosa che sproni nuovamente a innalzare in modo edificante il vivere umano. Ecco allora che le slitte non sono soltanto strumento per il viaggio terreno, ma simbolo di partenza per una meta che trascende la realtà stessa, che appartiene al mondo dello spirito. Le slitte di Scarpitta rappresentano una manifestazione sociale di energia collettiva.

BIOGRAPHY

Painter-sculptor Salvatore Scarpitta was an artist with wideranging modernist expression that included wrapped canvases symbolizing death and survival and sculptures of cars and sleds as a metaphor for travel. He was born in 1919 in Manhattan, and was raised in Los Angeles, where his Italianborn father, was commissioned to do the bas-relief sculptures on the Los Angeles Stock Exchange Building. His mother was a part-time actress. Scarpitta graduated from Hollywood High School, and then went to Italy where from 1936 to 1958, he lived in Rome, and graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts. He was in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and served as a “monuments man”, meaning he was part of a multi-national effort to nd, catalog and rescue ne art stolen by the Nazis from individual and national collections and also identify monuments and historical sites so that Allies could be alerted to avoid them. After the war, he remained in Italy until 1958, and became well acquainted with Leo Castelli, gallery owner in New York. Castelli then promised Scarpitta gallery representation if he would go to New York. Scarpitta left for the United States, and in January 1959, the Leo Castelli Gallery held an exhibition titled Extramurals, which featured Scarpitta’s ‘wrapped’ or ‘bandaged’ canvases. He had exhibited these ‘bandaged’ paintings at the Galleria La Tartaruga in Rome, in 1958, shortly before showing them at the Castelli Gallery in January 1959. They were called “bendati” or “bandaged” paintings because the artist cut and slashed the canvases, before recombining the lacerated parts. Most of them were monochromatic, and symbolic of a birthing gown or rebirth, were bound in webbing that the artist had obtained at surplus stores. From that time, Scarpitta would have ten one- man exhibitions at Castelli from 1959 to 1992, in addition to his participation in group shows there. He became a well-known member of the avantgarde art scene in New York, well thought of by AbstractExpressionist artists including de Kooning, Rothko and Kline, and their supportive art critic, Harold Rosenberg. In 1966, he

became a visiting critic at the Maryland Institute of College Art. Essentially a Pop Artist utilizing found-object collage in early paintings, and fascinated by the automobile and racing cars in his sculpture, Scarpitta used car and machine parts, even skis and sleds to express movement as “a metaphor of existence.” (Shattuck) This interest stemmed from growing up in the automobile culture of California. One of his pieces, Rajo Jack Special, was a reproduction of the rst race-car driven in competition by an African American. Another work, Lynx, was a replica of an armored car. Not only did Scarpitta create sculpted versions of vehicles, but he also raced them on a dirt track near his home in New Oxford, Pennsylvania.

The name of his crew sponsor, the Leo Castelli Gallery, was painted on the side of his racecar. In the 1970s, he directed his creative talents to constructing sleds from found objects such as chairs, hockey sticks and Christmas trees items he found in trash barrels. He also wrapped his sleds, as though they had protection from skin. Willem de Kooning purchased the rst Scarpitta sled. Salvatore Scarpitta exhibited twenty paintings at the Fonte d’Abisso Gallery in Milan in 2001, including X Caged Poncho, 1974, which he had exhibited at the Art Car Museum of Houston, Texas. His work is represented in the collection of Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Turin, Italy. A catalogue of Salvatore Scarpitta’s work, edited by Luigi Sansone, was published by Mazzotta, in Milan. Salvatore Scarpitta died on April 10, 2007 at his home in Manhattan. Survivors included his wife, two daughters, and ve grandsons.

Salvatore Scarpitta, nato a New York nel 1919 da padre italiano, uno scultore stabilitosi negli Stati Uniti nel primo decennio del Novecento, e da madre di origine russo-polacca, cresce a Hollywood dove la famiglia si trasferisce alcuni mesi dopo la sua nascita. In California, n dall’adolescenza Scarpitta ha modo di coltivare una particolare passione per le gare d’auto e per il mondo che le circonda. Si reca spesso, infatti, a Los Angeles, al circuito della Legion Ascot Speedway in Boyle Heights, per osservare le corse e conoscere piloti famosi come Frank Lockhart, Ernie Triplett e molti altri che esercitarono su di lui uno straordinario e duraturo fascino. Scarpitta compie gli studi secondari a Hollywood no al 1936, anno in cui decide di partire per l’Italia e iscriversi all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, dove si diploma nel 1940. Durante la seconda guerra mondiale partecipa alla resistenza italiana come elemento di collegamento con l’Esercito americano, in seguito si arruola nella Marina americana e dopo il congedo nella primavera del 1946 a San Pedro, California, ritorna in Italia per stabilirsi a Roma. La sua attività artistica inizia con successo a Roma, dove nel 1948 partecipa alla Quadriennale e l’anno seguente tiene la sua prima personale alla Galleria Chiurazzi. Negli anni Cinquanta espone in mostre personali e collettive in Europa e negli Stati Uniti ed è invitato alle edizioni della Biennale di Venezia del 1952, 1956 e 1958.

Nel 1958 espone per la prima volta le tele estro esse e i lavori con le bende in tensione alla Galleria La Tartaruga di Roma. Questi lavori portano una ventata di fresca originalità nel mondo artistico romano e stimolano numerosi artisti italiani e non solo. Nel 1958 Scarpitta incontra a Roma Leo Castelli che lo invita a esporre presso la sua galleria a New York; per questo motivo, nel dicembre del 1958, ritorna negli Stati Uniti dove nel gennaio successivo espone i lavori con le bende alla Leo Castelli Gallery. Questa mostra segnerà il punto di partenza di un pro cuo rapporto di lavoro e amicizia tra Leo Castelli e l’artista, documentato dalle numerose mostre personali e collettive a cui Scarpitta partecipa nei

decenni successivi, l’ultima delle quali è inaugurata nel gennaio 1998, per celebrare i quarant’anni di attività della galleria. Agli inizi degli anni Sessanta, Scarpitta costruisce due auto da corsa, Rajo Jack e Hal Special, che espone nel 1965 alla Leo Castelli Gallery. Nel 1969, nelle seconda mostra di auto presso la Leo Castelli Warehouse sulla 108a strada a New York, Scarpitta presenta cinque auto da corsa, tra cui Ernie Triplett Special e Railduster. Tra l’autunno del 1973 e la ne del 1974 Scarpitta lavora alla costruzione delle prime slitte, che espone nel gennaio 1975 alla Leo Castelli Gallery. Nell’estate del 1985 realizza nel suo studio- garage di Baltimora, nel Maryland, uno dei sogni di gioventù: un’auto da corsa (Dirt Track Racer) perfettamente funzionante, che l’anno seguente, con il sostegno di Leo Castelli, scenderà sulle piste di terra battuta del Maryland e della Pennsylvania per competere con i maggiori campioni del momento.

Dagli anni Cinquanta ad oggi le opere di Scarpitta sono state presentate in numerose esposizioni in Europa e negli Stati Uniti. Nel 1985 il Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea di Milano organizza una sua personale in cui sono esposte opere datate dal 1958 al 1985. Nel 1993 l’artista è inivato alla Biennale di Venezia con una sala personale. Nell’aprile del 2003 gli è assegnato il Premio Guglielmo Marconi per la Pittura. Le opere di Scarpitta sono presenti in numerosi musei americani (Whitney Museum, New York, Museum of Modern Art, New York), ed europei (Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Torino, Museo del ‘900, Milano, Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Trento e Rovereto). Nel 2005 è pubblicato il catalogo generale delle sue opere, a cura di Luigi Sansone, editore Gabriele Mazzotta. Scarpitta muore a New York il 10 aprile 2007.
