Al fresco summers… the essence of Mallorca It may be wishful thinking, or just desperate optimism, but industry sources (including taxi drivers, and they usually know better than anyone) are expecting an increase in the number of tourists visiting Mallorca this summer. That’s the good news: the bad news is that a growing number are booking “all-inclusive” hotel packages. This invariably means they barely venture out from the cloistered comfort zones of their hotels and, even if they do, tend to keep their wallets and purses safely tucked away from even the moderate temptation of a chilled glass of wine by the sea. Let alone a plate of boquerones! In today’s crisis times, with people worried about their future but still wanting to treat their children or partner to a holiday in the sun, that is understandable. It is also, however, a great shame. Languid days relaxing around the hotel pool, and evenings feasting from the hotel buffet before adjourning to the bar and the “free” beer, and singing along to Neil Diamond tribute acts, might be fine family fun but it is not, sadly, savouring the real Mallorca. It would be impossible in these few lines to list the numerous and widely varied charms and attractions of Mallorca – and specifically its exceptional al fresco summer lifestyle – but we can at least start with Santa Catalina. As Sarah Hughes reveals in our special feature this issue, the former fishing village has over the years been transformed into a fashionable and convivial suburb offering the true essence of contemporary Palma, from the wonderful aromas of its traditional fresh food market to the exotic flavours of its cosmopolitan restaurants – and the chic tapas cafés, bars and nightclubs. Santa Catalina truly does have it all – and certainly so much more than an “all-inclusive” hotel! Continuing our summer dining theme, this issue we feature a special column by renowned health educator, writer and gourmet raw chef Jeni Cook; while our doyenne of Mediterranean recipes, Gillaine Hathaway, serves up some super summer soups. In our Island Connections feature we take an exclusive peak into the studios of Radio One Mallorca, to learn more about the people behind the microphone – who keep us so well informed “all about the islands”. Mallorca’s authoritative boating man Peter Franklin joins the team this month with his Nautical Notes; and we have an inside look at the revolutionary “green” credentials of Mochi Craft’s Long Range 23. Our celebrity beauty guru, Allegra Curtis, reveals the secrets of flawless skin; Jennifer Jane explains how to apply simple beach make-up and choose the most appropriate fake tan; and Katie Handyside provides some top tips to burn more fat now that the bikinis (and boardies) have been brought out of the cupboard. On a lighter note, inveterate letter writer Barrie Suart watches his language after last month mourning the loss of the apostrophe; and Laura Penn ventures out from her undercover winter armed with a Bic! We hope you enjoy this first issue of summer 2011 and, once again, do heartily recommend that you tell all your visiting friends about the unrivalled pleasures of getting out and discovering Mallorca.

Jennifer Lopez

Hollywood’s Latina Queen of Hearts After nearly two years out of the limelight raising her and husband Marc Anthony’s twin babies, Jennifer Lopez is back with a new album (Love?) and her first top-10 single since 2003 (On the Floor, with rapper Pitbull). Jennifer Lopez has often appeared to be the archetype diva. Her well-publicised “requests” during hotel stays or PR tours have provided gossip writers with ample ammunition for ridicule, ranging from grapefruit and lime blossom candles and yellow M&Ms to a humidifier. Like so many other celebrities speaking before thinking (or neglecting to follow the carefully-scripted PR spiel), she has made some pretty silly pronouncements…. “I have the stardom glow”… or, “I actually had a really big pregnancy pillow that I used at night and Marc still sleeps with it to this day”… or, “I’m not mad about my ankles; they’re too skinny”… or, “There are certain people who are marked for death. I have my little list of those that treated me unfairly”…

And then there was the just plain weird “J.Lo” period. Of the latter, she said back in 2005, “I’m not J.Lo; she’s not a real person. She was just a bit of fun that got really crazy. I’ve never been anyone but Jennifer. I was going to call the album Call Me Jennifer because that would be my way of saying goodbye to

BEHIND THE PUBLIC PERSONA

The Beginnings Jennifer Lopez was born in South Bronx on 24 July 1969, the middle sister of three. Her parents were both born in Puerto Rico and brought to the US during their childhoods – they met in New York – and her paternal grandmother’s parents were Europeans who settled on Puerto Rico. Even though Lopez was raised in a Latino family she reportedly struggles to converse in Spanish. As a child she appreciated a variety of musical genres. “I was in third grade when Rapper’s Delight changed my life. But, when I came home, my mother would be listening to Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Diana Ross. I wanted to include all those elements in my music.”

Photo: Warwick Saint

At the same time she was intrigued by the film industry. “I was always a singer and a dancer (she took lessons at five), and I always wanted to be an actress. For me, it’s all just one thing.”

the whole J.Lo thing. But Rebirth is perfect because it means so much more.” Of the “diva thing”, she like-wise clearly feels hardly done by. “It’s a shame to call somebody a ‘diva’ simply because they work harder than everybody else…. Everybody has laughed; everybody has had a knock at me. It hurts; it always does. There have been times when I didn’t want to be me any more. From the outside looking in, it may have appeared that it was a glamorous exciting life, but I would have swapped places with anybody. It really did start to get to me and the easy thing to do would be to walk away.” For detractors, her main redeeming feature is a curvaceous Latina body – “I could serve coffee using my rear as a ledge,” she once quipped – but even they recognise her capacity for hard work. “My mom always told me that if you work hard you can achieve anything. And it’s

20

She moved out of her parents’ home at 18 and took a job in a law firm while also picking up dancing jobs at night.

true. It’s one of the truest things ever… I didn’t expect it to happen like this, wrapping one film and flying out to do a new one the next day. But I’m fresh enough and ambitious enough to stay up all night for the sake of a job. I’m not gonna take it easy. I want to do so much more when I’m getting these great opportunities.” They might call her “La Guitarra” in the gym – because of her guitar-shaped body – but back in the Bronx neighbourhood she is “The Supernova”, a versatile star: dancer, singer, actress, record producer, fashion designer, TV personality and producer… On the one hand she has won a Razzie award for worst actress in 2003 (for Gigli); on the other, according to Forbes in 2007, her movies average $9 of gross revenue per $1 paid to Lopez, and by 2004 she had amassed a fortune estimated at $255. She has received critical acclaim and awards for her acting – but also starred in some celebrated box office bombs. Photograph supplied by Press Association

Her first major beak came when she was offered a job as a “fly girl” dancer on the TV comedy show Living Colour from 1991 to 1993. Soon after, she became a back-up dancer for Janet Jackson and appeared in her 1993 video That’s the Way Love Goes. She first gained a TV job as an actress in the Fox series South Central, had her first big screen role in the 1995 drama My Family and made her major breakthrough in the title role of Selena, a 1997 biopic of the Tejano pop singer. She earned an ALMA (American Latino Media Arts) award for outstanding actress in that film, and followed that up with a second ALMA for her performance alongside George Clooney in Out of Sight. In the latter she became the first Latina actress to be paid over $1 million for a role.

scene, and a gun was found in the front seat of the vehicle. Combs was charged with felony gun possession, and their relationship ended about one year later.

She has received two Grammy Award nominations, two Latin Grammy Award nominations and three American Music Awards (among six nominations); and is currently a member of the judging panel of American reality TV competition American Idol.

Her second marriage was to former back-up dancer Cris Judd. This time it lasted barely nine months, when Lopez began dating Ben Affleck.

Lopez’s entrepreneurial pursuits include the launch of various clothing lines: JLO by Jennifer Lopez in 2003; Sweetface in 2005; and JustSweet in 2007. In 2002 she opened a Cuban restaurant in Pasadena, called Madre’s; and dabbled in the perfume industry with her debut Glow by J.Lo the following year. On the philanthropic side, she supports the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, advocates human rights and promotes vaccinations for whooping cough – though she has also been criticised for using fur in her clothing lines and personal wardrobe. Her personal life has hardly been any less frenetic than her professional career. Her first marriage to Cuban-born waiter Ojani Noa lasted from February 1997 to January 1998; and she had a two and a half year relationship with hip-hop mogul Sean Combs. In 1999, Lopez and Combs were at the Club New York nightclub in midtown Manhattan when gunfire erupted between Combs’ entourage and another group. Police stopped the couple as they were being driven away from the

Two months later, Lopez was seen with long-time friend Marc Anthony (they had briefly dated in the late 1990s before his first marriage and her second). They married in a quiet home wedding in June 2004, four days after his divorce from former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres was finalised. All the guests were invited to an “afternoon party”, and were never told they were going to a wedding. In November 2007, the last night of her En Concierto tour, Lopez confirmed she was expecting her first child with Anthony, and she gave birth on 22 February 2008 to fraternal twins, a girl and a boy, Emme Maribel Muñiz and Maximilian “Max” David Muñiz. The following month People magazine paid $6 million for an exclusive introduction of the twins.

“I thought she’d offer me some sympathy. Instead, she said, ‘Don’t you ever call me crying again! You wanted to be in this business, so you better toughen up!’ And I did.” (interviewed by Redbook magazine in 1999 and commenting on the lesson in tough love she received from her mother) “We’ve all had a love of our life and failed love affairs. I’m just the biggest romantic – it’s really sad. I tell people that, but nobody listens.” “I only do what my gut tells me to. I think it’s smart to listen to other people’s advice, but at the end of the day you’re the only one who can tell you what’s right for you.” “If you focus on the money, you’re not going to get anywhere. You can want to be successful, but at the end of the day, if money is your motivation, if that’s how shallow your outlook is on life, then you’re going to be such an empty person. Because there’s nothing driving you from the inside – there’s no passion.” “Beauty is only skin-deep. I think what’s really important is finding a balance of mind, body and spirit. Somebody said to me not too long ago, ‘Until you’re twenty, you have the face you are born with, and after that you have the face you deserve’, and I really loved that – the idea that you wear who you are on your face.” “Part of my business is about being in shape and looking good. You can’t lie to yourself about it. But I’m not the monster I used to be in the exercise department. You get past your 20s, you’ve got kids... you’re kind of unmotivated. You want to be healthy and look good, but you want to do the least amount to maintain that.”

In 2001 she became the first actress and singer in history to have a film (The Wedding Planner) and album (J.Lo) at number one in the same week. She had previously gained prominence in the music industry with the release of her debut studio album On the 6 (1999), which

Lopez announced her engagement to Affleck in November 2002, after Affleck gave her a six-carat pink diamond ring reportedly valued at $1.2 million. The marriage was planned for September 2003 in Santa Barbara but was called off just hours before the event, and they announced the end of their engagement in January 2004. The relationship was parodied on the South Park episode “Fat Butt and Pancake Head”.

“It was all a bit mad. For a girl like me, wearing gorgeous clothes and having all this attention was amazing. It was like being a princess. But it didn’t take me long to realise that that sort of fame can be scary. The more the circus builds up around you, the more you start to lose all those intentions that get you there in the first place. I was always about being a good performer and working hard, doing movies, making music, but that started to get lost in all that crazy stuff.”

“I’m not a Scientologist; I was raised Catholic. But it’s funny the way people come at it. To me it’s so strange. These are some of the best people I’ve ever met in my life. My dad has been a Scientologist for 20 years. He’s the best man that I know in my life and so it’s weird to me that people want to paint it in a negative way.”

NEW RELEASES, WHAT’S BEING FILMED AT THE MOMENT, WHAT’S IN PRE-PRODUCTION AND WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE… MICKY REYNOLDS LOOKS AT WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF MOVIES

This DC Comics character might not be on the same radar as other comic book superheroes but the studio is confident he will be after this hits silver screens worldwide.

BEST OF THE REST Hanna Release date: 8 April (US); 6 May (UK); 10 June (Spain) In this stylish thriller, a 16-year-old kick ass-type chick is raised by her ex-CIA father to become a cold-blooded killing machine in the wilds of Finland. film OF THE MONTH

X-Men: First Class Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom

Worldwide release: 3 June Comic book superhero flicks are not just the flavour of this month – 2011 has a hive full of them and all are expected to bank big bucks for their makers. Thor has already topped the box office charts both sides of the Atlantic and Captain America will fly on to our screens at the end of next month and is expected to be a white hot summer blockbuster. June sees two big names making the transformation from the comic book pages to the picture house: X-Men: First Class and The Green Lantern. “Mutation: it is the key to our evolution. It has enabled us to evolve into the dominant species of the planet. This process normally takes thousands and thousands of years, but every few hundred millennia evolution leaps forward.” These were the opening

22

lines of the original X-Men movie in 2000 and at the time little did we know that it would spawn one of the biggest flick franchises of the 21st century. X-Men: First Class lands as the fifth offering in a series that has now gone forwards and backwards in time like Doctor Who. But this delves deep into the very beginning of the epic saga – a prequel to the original trilogy, the days before Wolverine was even seen – telling the story of how the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants formed, parted, then went their separate ways. The story revolves around the teenage years of Charles Xavier (JAMES McAVOY) and Erik Lehnsherr (MICHAEL FASSBENDER), close friends who worked together during the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. Here, both discover they have special powers while

trying to help stop that major crisis. Having different powers and different ideas, a rift soon opens between the two, they both meet others like themselves (branded as mutants) who take sides as the legions of the X-Men, led by Professor X (Xavier), and Magneto’s (Lehnsherr) Brotherhood of Mutants are born. As per usual with a lot of films these days, the full plot is being kept undercover; there have been a few trailers, but little was given away. The less the public knows, the more intrigued they will be and put their bums on cinema seats. But this is where it all began. Also stars KEVIN BACON, JANUARY JONES, ROSE BYRNE, JENNIFER LAWRENCE, LUCAS TILL, ZOE KRAVITZ. (Photos: Murray Close – Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation)

It all begins in a galaxy far, far away (sound familiar?) with a small but powerful force, the Green Lantern Corps, who have existed for many centuries. They are a brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, and each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy, the Parallax, threatens to destroy the balance of power in the universe, the Corps decide to pull the planet Earth into the equation for the first time by forcing one of their rings upon an upstart test pilot (RYAN REYNOLDS), who at the time is on a high flying sortie, and this mystical green ring bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe. He attempts to master this and, with the encouragement of a fellow pilot/childhood sweetheart (Gossip Girl’s BLAKE LIVELY), he quickly masters the powers of the ring and finds the courage to overcome his fears. With this new-found confidence he may not only be the key to defeating the Parallax – but also become the greatest Green Lantern of all. Critics reckon this will go either one way or the other – a box office blockbuster or a box office bomb – but only the public will decide if this lantern will glow or go. Also stars MARK STRONG, ANGELA BASSETT, TIM ROBBINS, TAIKA WAITITI and PETER SARSGAARD. Photo: DreamWorld Animation ALL INFORMATION ON THESE PAGES WAS CORRECT AT THE TIME OF GOING TO PRESS.

Also back reprising their Lord of the Rings roles are HUGO WEAVING as the elf Elrond and IAN HOLM who will appear now and again as a reminiscing older Bilbo Baggins. MARTIN FREEMAN, who plays the younger Baggins, is taking an early summer break to return to Britain to film his role as Dr Watson in the second series of the BBC’s excellent 21st century revamp of Sherlock Holmes. Another Hobbit star taking time out is IAN McKELLEN who has just finished filming his part for The Curse of the Buxom Strumpet. He plays a lord who leads an escape from a 1713 town where a strange plague has turned the town’s residents into flesheating cannibals. Also on the run are JUDI DENCH and GILLIAN ANDERSON. JOHNNY DEPP has finally got his Lone Ranger: the superstar signed up for the part of sidekick Tonto some time ago but JERRY BUCKHEIMER wasn’t sure who he wanted to sit in the saddle for the main role. The man in the mask will be Social Network star ARNIE HAMMER for this Disney reboot of the western story which sees Tonto as the brains behind the duo.

More Disney news: The Mouse House Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz: The Great and Powerful, has added Brokeback Mountain Oscar-nominated actress MICHELLE WILLIAMS to the cast to replace Gossip Girl star BLAKE LIVELY as Glinda the Good Witch, and another witch who is off to see the wizard is 2005 Oscar winner RACHEL WEISZ (The Constant Gardener) as Evanorah, the Wicked Witch of the East. They will join MILA KUNIS as Theodorah, the witch who goes on to become the infamous Wicked Witch of the West; and JAMES FRANCO teams up again with his former Spiderman director SAM RAIMI in the lead role telling how the Wizard arrived in Oz and became the ruler. Meanwhile, former Spiderman TOBEY MAGUIRE has joined the cast of The Paperboy in which a Miami Times reporter

The aforementioned Columbian cougar is also set to join 20th Century Fox’s much talked about Three Stooges project as a conniving woman who cons this comedy trio – they made some 200 films from the 1930s until the 1950s. This will tell how they grew up together in an orphanage before coming major black and white movie stars. The three clowns will be played by 24 star CHRIS DIAMANTOPOULOS as “Boss Stooge” Mo; SEAN HAYES of Will & Grace fame plays the nice but dim Larry; and WILL SASSO (Happy Gilmore) is the bald stool pigeon Curly. The Dark Knight Rises update: CHRISTIAN BALE says he has no intention of wearing the Batman cowl again once he finishes shooting the current film unless director CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, who says it will be his last, changes his mind. The latter also squashed rumours that The Joker would return using deleted footage and CGI of HEATH LEDGER. The main villain will be Catwoman, played by ANNE HATHAWAY; and Inception star MARION COTILLARD will play Wayne Enterprises board member Miranda Tate, who is rumoured to be Talia al Ghul, the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul – the evil mentor of Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins who may have died in the train crash towards the end of the movie (or did he?). A younger version of that character is portrayed by Social Network star JOSH PENCE. Also, another two Inception cast members are new to the franchise in TOM HARDY as the villain, Bane, and JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT as John Blake, a detective who joins Commissioner Gordon’s squad to catch Batman. Also returning are MICHAEL CAINE (Alfred), MORGAN FREEMAN (Lucius) and GARY OLDMAN as Commissioner Gordon. Filming starts this month.

GIG BYTES Compiled by Micky Reynolds

The rift between ROLLING STONES main men MICK JAGGER and KEITH RICHARDS seems to be widening after the latter recently went into the studio to record an album with his X-PENSIVE WINOS project – much to the annoyance of the singer. So what’s good for the goose, etc. etc. – and MICK has formed SUPER HEAVY with EURYTHMICS main man DAVE STEWART, JOSS STONE and DAMIAN MARLEY (guess who he is the son of). JAGGER and RICHARDS fell out big time after axe man KEEF poked fun at Mick’s manhood in his autobiography last year. The STONES are one of the favourites for the opening ceremony at London 2012 and the band’s future could be in jeopardy if these two do not sort things out. Another band who have had in-house problems, GIRLS ALOUD, have thrown their hat into the Olympic ring along with the SPICE GIRLS and TAKE THAT… plus COLDPLAY. To open it? Maybe to close it down…Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Talking about TAKE THAT… they will boost their bank balance on 13 June with eight new tracks as part of a double-disc set, Progressed, which also features last year’s Progress album and a new single, Love, Love, Love, from the soundtrack of the X-Men: First Class movie. New girls on the pop block WONDERLAND release their eponymous debut album on 6 June and their second single Starlight on the same day. These five Irish beauties are being touted as the next big chick band and, with LOUIS WALSH and KIAN EGAN of WESTLIFE, behind them they have a good chance of making it. While the rest of the world blogged about the demise of the world’s most wanted man last month, attention-seeking LILY ALLEN was on a me, me, me Tweet saying her 26th birthday was “REAL news” and not that death. Our April Fool joke suggesting that PEACHES GELDOF was going to front a revived version of UK TV Channel 4 1980s cult show The Tube seems to have snowballed. My contacts in the UK know nothing about it and she said on Twitter, “Just to clarify – I’m not presenting on the new series of The Tube, if there’s going to even be one. It’s an internet rumour and isn’t true.” Well, if it did come from here, I will have to think hard about beating that one next April! The BRIT School, which has spawned such talent as LEONA LEWIS, AMY WINEHOUSE, JESSIE J, KATY B, ADELE and THE KOOKS, is planning a concert sometime this month featuring all the aforementioned to mark its 20th birthday.

JUSTIN BIEBER continues to p*** people off… the latest were several actors when he filmed his role for CSI Las Vegas. In the show the “spoiled brat” got gunned down and I bet many were thinking “if only”. While in Sin City he won a trophy at the Billboard Music Awards, thanking “everybody who helped me get out of my home town” – I bet the town’s residents clap their hands with joy when he’s not there! Next… a recent blog poll asked, “What recent event would you liked to have been present at?” You would think it might have been at a certain terrorist shoot-out but the winner was: “JUSTIN BIEBER being pelted with eggs at a gig in Sydney”. The day after that concert he was up to his tricks again while flying on to Melbourne. He was told by a stewardess to “stop acting like a child and respect my workplace” after he decided to practise that ancient Aussie art of going “walkabout” while the plane was taxiing down the runway for take-off. He also had a “Belieber” ejected from one of his shows after she threw a cuddly bear at him. Obviously he must know about the not so well known fact that more cuddly bears kill humans than real-life grizzlies. On average 22 adults die per year after tripping over that children’s toy and another 140,000 are injured. Maybe someone should start selling cuddly bears outside the “pint-sized” pup’s concerts – by the law of averages… The original manufactured band THE MONKEES have recently reformed and before their 45th anniversary tour had even started they remembered why they had split in the first place. Three of the original four, DAVY JONES, MICKY DOLENZ and PETER TORK, who had a hit US TV show in the mid-1960s and went on to have several hits including I’m A Believer, are just not getting on – all smiles for the cameras but backstage… Missing from the line-up is MIKE NESMITH, who inherited his inventor mother’s multi-milliondollar fortune, and wasn’t interested – sounds like he made the right choice. Those modern-day MONKEES, those of the ARCTIC variety, release their fourth album, Suck It And See, on 6 June. If last month’s single, Don’t Look Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair, is anything to go by it will be a lot better than their last offering, 2009’s Humbug. Hats off to ADELE – the 23-yearold who has dominated the UK album charts this year with 21 has snubbed possible arena dates and festivals this summer in favour of going drinking with her mates. She said, “I’ve been doing this since I was 18 (and before I bet) and if I do the gigs how could I do it. If I worked my t**s off for 10 years, I’d miss my whole tweenies. According to her official blog she is partial to the odd glass or five of wine and is looking forward to a summer of “parks, pubs and barbecues” once her US tour finishes this month. Good news for RED HOT CHILI PEPPER fans… drummer CHAD SMITH says their new album, Rock It Out, will be released in August. It will be the first material recorded with new guitarist JOSH KLINGHOFFER, who replaced JOHN FRUSIANTE last year. The drummer said of the new member, “He brought a lot to the table; he’s an excellent writer.”

28

Legendary guitarist SLASH has said that SLIPKNOT front man COREY TAYLOR will not be the new singer for VELVET REVOLVER despite all of the rumours. “We did work with Corey, but all we were doing was trying him out. Our process is that we take a lot of music we wrote and give it to the guy we’re auditioning. He writes his lyrics; we perform it, record it and see what it’s like. But it just wasn’t right. It didn’t seem to fit to me.” So the search will go on but the guitarist said the band would not be recording for at least two years as his solo career comes first. Last month LADY GA GA amassed four singles in the UK top 20 at the same time, the most for a female solo artist since Irish singer RUBY MURRAY, who had five in March 1955. But did you see her on the DAVID LETTERMAN chat show last month? With that new black and white hairdo and those ridiculous platform boots she looked like a cross between LILY and HERMAN MUNSTER. And what’s with the video for Judas? Dressing up as MARY MAGDALENE and swinging a crucifix – didn’t MADONNA do that in her Like A Prayer video back in 1989? So MARIAH CAREY gave birth to twins last month and the first sound they heard when entering this world was a live version of one of her songs – the poor little mites.

Summer means beaches, bronzing and books. If you are looking for a good read to relax with, here are some of this summer’s hottest books.

WHEN GOD WAS A RABBIT

THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN JOHN EMMET

By SARAH WINMAN

Young Elly’s world is shaped by those who inhabit it: her loving but maddeningly distractible parents; a best friend who smells of chips and knows exotic words like “slag”; an ageing fop who tap dances his way into her home; a Shirley Bassey impersonator who trails close behind; and lastly, of course, a rabbit called God. In a childhood peppered with moments both ordinary and extraordinary, Elly’s one constant is her brother Joe. Twenty years on, Elly and Joe are fully-grown and as close as they ever were. Until, that is, one bright morning and a single, earth-shattering event that threatens to destroy their bond forever. Spanning four decades and moving between suburban Essex, the wild coast of Cornwall and the streets of New York, this is a story about childhood, eccentricity, the darker side of love and sex, the pull and power of family ties, loss and life. More than anything, it’s a story about love in all its forms.

THE CONFESSIONS OF KATHERINE HOWARD

By ELIZABETH SPELLER

It is 1920… the Great War has been over for two years, and it has left a very different world from the Edwardian certainties of 1914. Following the death of his wife and baby and his experiences on the Western Front, Laurence Bartram has become something of a recluse. Yet death and the aftermath of the conflict continue to cast a pall over peacetime England and, when a young woman he once knew persuades him to look into events that apparently led her brother, John Emmett, to kill himself, Laurence is forced to revisit the darkest parts of the war. As Laurence unravels the connections between Captain Emmett’s suicide, a group of war poets, a bitter regimental feud and a hidden love affair, more disquieting deaths are exposed. Even at the moment Laurence begins to live again, it dawns on him that nothing is as it seems, and that even those closest to him have their secrets.

By SUZANNAH DUNN

When 12-year-old Katherine Howard comes to live in the Duchess of Norfolk’s household, poor relation Cat Tilney is deeply suspicious of her. The two girls couldn’t be more different: Cat, watchful and ambitious; Katherine, interested only in clothes and boys. Their companions are in thrall to Katherine, but it’s Cat in whom Katherine confides and, despite herself, Cat is drawn to her. Summoned to court at 17, Katherine leaves Cat in the company of her ex-lover, Francis, and the two begin their own, much more serious, love affair. Within months, the king has set aside his Dutch wife Anne for Katherine. The future seems assured for the new queen and her maid-in-waiting, although Cat would feel more confident if Katherine hadn’t embarked on an affair with one of the king’s favoured attendants, Thomas Culpepper. However, for a while it seems that Katherine can have everything she wants. But then allegations are made about her girlhood love affairs. Desperately frightened, Katherine recounts a version of events which implicates Francis but which Cat knows to be a lie. Cat alone knows the whole truth of Queen Katherine Howard – but, if she tells, Katherine will die.

THE DEATH INSTINCT By JED RUBENFELD

September 16, 1920: under a clear blue September sky, a quarter ton of explosives is detonated in a deadly attack on Wall Street. Fear comes to the streets of New York. Witnessing the blast are war veteran Stratham Younger, his friend James Littlemore of the New York police department and beautiful French radiochemist Colette Rousseau. A series of inexplicable attacks on Colette, a secret buried in her past and a mysterious trail of evidence lead Younger, Littlemore and Rousseau on a thrilling international and psychological journey – from Paris to Prague, from the Vienna home of Dr Sigmund Freud to the corridors of power in Washington, DC, and ultimately to the hidden depths of our most savage instincts. As the seemingly disjointed pieces of Younger and Littlemore’s investigations come together, the two uncover the shocking truth about the bombing – a truth that threatens to shake their world to its foundations.

“I know you, don’t I?” Five words – that’s all it takes to plunge Mike Wingate and his family into mortal danger. Mike doesn’t recognise the crippled stranger who approaches him at a party but the stranger seems to know all about him. What has Mike done? Do they have the wrong man? Overnight, the threats become attacks, and Mike, his wife and their young daughter learn they aren’t safe anywhere – especially not their own home. He doesn’t know who they are. He doesn’t know what they want. But there’s no time to figure it out, because his enemies have killed before, and he’s next

MAJOR PETTIGREW´S LAST STAND

By HELEN SIMONSON Major Ernest Pettigrew (Ret’d) is not interested in the frivolity of the modern world. Since his wife Nancy’s death, he has tried to avoid the constant bother of nosy village women, his grasping, ambitious son and the ever-spreading suburbanisation of the English countryside, preferring to lead a quiet life upholding the values that people have lived by for generations: respectability, duty and a properly brewed cup of tea. But when his brother’s death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs. Ali, the widowed village shopkeeper of Pakistani descent, the Major is drawn out of his regimented world and forced to confront the realities of life in the 21st century. Drawn together by a shared love of literature and the loss of their respective spouses, the Major and Mrs. Ali soon find their friendship blossoming into something more. However, although the Major was actually born in Lahore, and Mrs. Ali in Cambridge, village society insists on embracing him as the quintessential local and her as a permanent foreigner. The Major has always taken special pride in the village, but how will the chaotic recent events affect his relationship with the place that he calls home?

Shopping... Santa Catalina market Without a doubt the heart of Santa Catalina is its market located on Calle Annibal. Parking can be difficult unless you have a tiny car but the hordes of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish on offer will soon ease your frustrations.

SANTA CATALINA

A village of your own

If the heart of the area is the market then its soul must be Bar Joan Frau, a tiny but heaving tapas bar located next to the main entrance. Bar Joan Frau is an institution among the locals who have been coming here year after year to enjoy fresh authentic tapas in the hustle and bustle of a marketplace environment. Even if you’re not hungry you can’t help but want to hang out around this busy little hive of activity and soak up the atmosphere.

Situated to the west of Palma’s old city walls and nestled against the harbour front is the former fishing village of Santa Catalina. Sarah Hughes spent some time last month getting to know the true identity of the area – and chose a few favourite cosmopolitan hangouts along the way. Santa Catalina is often merely referred to as an up and coming area for enjoying a drink or something to eat, yet the truth of it is that within these streets lives a whole village of services required for modern day life. This area has it all, including a school, health centres, banks, day care centre, post office, fresh food market (as well as the ubiquitous Eroski), book shop and dog grooming salon to name but a few. Having said that there’s no doubt that the character of the area has improved dramatically in recent years, with muchneeded money being invested into restoring and renovating its streets. Despite this facelift, the area retains much of its previous charm, with the pretty tree-lined streets maintaining their low-rise housing, while now also being home to boutique apartments and urban bars. Together with the ongoing development comes the arrival of some fantastic places to eat and drink, all offering a refreshing alternative to the tourist-trap eateries too often found elsewhere in Palma.

B Connected (C/ Dameto, 4-6, and Sant Magi, 64) Within one tiny area shoppers are treated to not one but three stores from B Connected. Displayed beautifully within the walls of their Concept Store, Fashion & More on Calle Dameto and Vintage Store on San Magin is a wealth of extraordinary design objects, furniture, artwork, jewellery, accessories, fashion and high-quality vintage goods. Supporting Fair Trade as well as local designers looking for a place to present their work, this is a shopping venture you needn’t feel guilty about. The stores are a feast for the eyes, immaculately presented and boasting labels such as American Vintage, Superdry and Kitsch Kitchen – making them the perfect spot to pick up something unique for yourself or a loved one.

Urban Gastronomy ML&S recommends...

The Room (C/ Cotoner, 47) I love everything about this place, from its chunky solid wood tables to its laidback yet charming staff and the incredibly delicious and innovative options on the menu; and, last but certainly by no means least, I love their desserts. Some of you may have know the place when it was previously known as Living but since reopening the restaurant has a new look, a new chef and some fantastic food on offer. The menu will change with the seasons and depending on local produce, but you can expect to see delicious homemade pastas, gnocci, and meat and fish dishes all year round. The piadinas are a favourite of mine, as is the melt-in-the-mouth gnocci. If you need any more convincing, pop along and take a peek at their desserts on display in the front window; you’ll be in there like a shot!

Duke (C/ Soler, 36) What do you get if you combine a highly trained chef knowledgeable in the art of fine cuisine with a surfing marine biologist with a knack for making people happy? The answer is Duke Restaurant, another of my favourite finds in Mallorca. Described as “a cross cultural food concept for global nomads served in a casual, relaxed but unique setting”, Duke is named after Duke Kahanamoku, an iconic figure in surfing, and is the creation of Ronny Portoulidis and Juanjo Campos.

Rotana

(Carrer de Sant Magi, 58) From the moment this place opened it has been a favourite of ours. Whatever your wish, nothing is too much trouble when it comes to dining at Rotana. The terrace outside has become increasingly popular in the evenings, with locals and tourist alike coming together to enjoy a mouth-watering mezze plate and a glass of whatever takes their fancy.

Ronny worked under the expert hand of Marc Fosh on first arriving in Mallorca and his flair for flavour is evident in each of the beautifully presented dishes. This place has a great menu del día throughout the week but in truth I love spending an evening here; it has the kind of atmosphere that pulls you into its bosom and tells you not to leave. Their menu is always changing, making use of the fresh ingredients available locally, and can feature anything from a fragrant Thai dish to modern twist on a Spanish favourite.

Some stylish new-comers & original

favourites

Reina Mora (C/ Sant Magi, 53) This pretty little place offers fabulously tasty plates of antipasti (think hummus, pitta, meats and cheese), making the perfect accompaniment to their extensive cocktail and wine menu. It is also a great place for coffee and dessert – try the panna cotta if it’s available.

Horreo Veinti3 (C/ Fabrica, 23) Perfectly situated on the now-pedestrian street Calle Fabrica, Horreo Veinti 3 is a very stylish restaurant/café offering quality seafood and tapas – a perfect place to spend a leisurely evening drinking wine out on the terrace.

ISLAND CONNECTIONS

Nightlife Idem (C/ Sant Magi, 60) This intimate little cocktail bar has a very baroque style, decked out in red walls, velvet cushions and ornate chandeliers. With erotic art on the walls and cocktails flowing steady through the night this is certainly no place to take the children but a fantastic place to spend an evening sipping cocktails and relaxing in its ambience. Closing time is 3am in summer and they have a great little terrace out the back to enjoy the evening air.

Nightli

Mangiafuoco (Plaza Vapor, 4) El Perrito (C/ d’Anníbal, 20) This is a pretty little cafe perfect to just enjoy a freshly squeezed juice while you watch the world go by; or maybe indulge in one of their tasty quiches packed with eggs and veggies and a fresh crunchy salad if you’re feeling a bit peckish.

A Todo Vapor (C/ Annibal, 6) Santa Catalina has become synonymous with all things new and alternative, so it’s no surprise that Mallorca’s first restaurant to exclusively use the cooking method of steaming would chose it as its home. Its proximity to the market must surely have been another reason as the menu boasts many ingredients bought directly from here, steam-cooked to perfection to retain full flavour and optimum nutritional value. Expect to find an array of seafood on the menu, as well as a few meat options including chicken breast stuffed with spinach and sumptuous desserts such as steamed (obviously!) chocolate pears. Also note that Fridays and Saturdays bring the option of French oysters.

Bar Cuba (San Magin, 1) This is one of the few places that needs no real introduction; even if you are unfamiliar with Santa Catalina itself you are likely to have spotted the beautifully restored colonial structure that is home to Bar Cuba: a restaurant, cafe bar and nightclub all under one roof. During the day it’s a perfect place to meet for coffee or a great menu del día (€12 with drinks) while watching the busy Avenue Argentina; and at night it turns into a fully-licensed nightclub open late into the evening.

Diner (C/ San Magin, 23, and Joan Maire Bisbe, 5) Sticking out like a sore thumb is Diner, an all-America affair complete with a menu of burgers, waffles and milkshakes and a jukebox for entertainment. In true American-style convenience Diner offers food pretty much throughout the day so drop in, wedge yourself into a booth, admire the vintage American décor and order yourself something naughty.

36

Small and unassuming, it may not look much from the outside but don’t let this put you off: Mangiafuoco offers fantastic authentic Italian cuisine. Homemade pasta and desserts are abundant here and have been served in a warm and welcoming environment for over 15 years.

Ummo (Sant Magi, 66) Small but contemporary in design, Ummo is a popular night-time restaurant. Perfect to stop off for a drink and sample some of the excellent tapas, if you can find a table!

Fabrica 23 (C/ Cotoner, 42-44) Over the years Fabrica 23 has become a well-known favourite to many, and with good reason. Fresh produce is bought at the nearby market and transformed into fantastic Mediterranean dishes, with their menu del día (€18.50 for three courses including wine) particularly popular.

Exit Rock Bar (C/ San Magin, 60) If you walk up Calle San Magin and see the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Jimmy Hendrix staring back at you from a graffiti-embellished wall then you know you’ve found the right spot. Despite offering breakfast or drinks and nibbles throughout the day, the Exit Rock Bar is best ventured to at night to enjoy a few drinks while listening to a medley of rock, soul and blues. Also popular are the Tuesday nights when you may get to watch biographies of artists such as Bob Dylan or The Doors with your feet up and a box of popcorn. Upstairs lies the Waswa studio, hosting an array of eye-catching photography, paintings and sculptures.

Garlic and Shots (C/ Cotoner, 33) As you might have guessed from the name, this place consists of a kitchen full of garlic and a bar loaded with 101 vodka shots. Created by the Olsson brothers, and boasting bars in Stockholm and London, their mission is described as, “No dishes are served without garlic. You can always order extra garlic, but never less. As you leave the restaurant you should feel like you’ve been garlic-marinated. This is our mission from God.”

Aretha (Carrer Pou, 8) Keen to not disappoint, Aretha plays rock, soul and jazz till late into the night. It’s a lovely low-key little place offering crepes and drinks.

Things to

see...

Es Baluard Cross over Avenue Argentina to Plaça Porta de Santa Catalina and you will find Es Baluard, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art that has been built inside the ancient fortress known as the bastion of Saint Peter. Displaying the most important artists who have converged on the Balearic Islands since the 20th century, the museum also offers internationally renowned artists such as Picasso and Miró. It’s a beautifully constructed building with views that alone justify a visit. General admission is only €6, with children under 12 free, and it also houses a great restaurant, Es Rebost d’Es Baluard, which is located to the left of the entrance to the museum on Plaza Santa Catalina, run by chef Joan Torrens.

Es Jonquet Bordering the Paseo Marítimo, there are some fantastic views to be seen from Es Jonquet over the waterfront and harbour. Simply walk up Carrer de Terrer towards the emblematic windmills, one of the first points of the island that can be seen from the sea.

RADIO ONE MALLORCA

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ISLANDS!

Want to know what is going on here on Mallorca? Tune into the English radio station Radio One Mallorca. Broadcasting 24 hours a day on radioonemallocra.com it is a mixture of music, news, interviews and entertainment. Who are the people behind the voices? Here we reveal the team who wear the headphones.

LAURA PENN

with three brothers and only one transistor radio (which my dad was always listening to the Test match on) so I never got the chance. I started working in radio by accident (I wanted to be a vet!) but colleagues that I have I admired over the years were Phil Easton and Norman Thomas (both now spinning discs in heaven) and Chris Best, who is thankfully still with us. What was the first record you bought? Crazy for You by Madonna. Drove the brothers crazy playing it again and again. If you could play a song on the radio to seduce a celebrity what song would it be and who would you play it to? I Got You Under my Skin by Frank Sinatra to Johnny Depp.

What is your radio show all about? Mallorca and music! I have been told that I am an “information Rottweiler”, always gathering news and stuff. (Maybe they meant nosey cow?) Radio is the best way of telling everyone what is going on. When Luna Radio stopped so many people told me that they felt disenfranchised and out of touch, so it is great to be spreading the news on air again. What radio have you done before? How long have you got? I started at Radio City in Liverpool in the ‘80s. Then I did a stint on BBC Radio 4 before moving into TV. I came back to radio on Rock FM in Preston, Century in Manchester, WISH FM in Wigan, Dune FM in Southport, HOT FM in Milton Keynes and even Country 1035 AM in London. I came here to get away from radio… and ended up starting Luna Radio and now English Radio Mallorca and Radio One Mallorca. What radio shows did you listen to when you were younger and who did you (or do you) admire in the world of radio? I never used to listen to the radio. I grew up

What else are you famous for apart from radio? Wearing cowboy hats. What is your favourite place on Mallorca and why? My bed! There is a lot of the island that I haven’t had the chance to see yet, but I love Fornalutx and I have some happy memories from there. (Not telling you what they are!) What makes you happy? Friends, my cat Skunk and Hierbas! If you had one wish what would you ask for? Shares in Cadburys. Where do you want to be and what do you want to be doing in five years time? Definitely still here on Mallorca, and running a full-time English radio station serving the expats. It is not easy living here, and there have been times when it would have been easier to leave, but I am stubborn and from the minute I arrived on this island I said that they would put my bones here.

What is your radio show all about? Laura and I have been presenting the Penn & Prior Breakfast Show on and off for around three years now. She is there for the girly stuff and I talk about football and ladies’ chests! The Pirate Radio show is a mix of sport and showbiz with a load of mayhem thrown in! What radio have you done before? I have worked on different radio stations here in Mallorca for five years now.

DES MITCHELL

What radio shows did you listen to when you were younger and who did you (or do you) admire in the world of radio? Steve Wright in the Afternoon when it was on BBC Radio 1, and now on BBC Radio 2. Chris Tarrant on Capital Radio, Chris Evans through all his different radio stations and finally Hawksbee & Jacobs on Talksport. In their own way they are all geniuses on radio.

What is your radio show all about? I like to think it’s the dance variety of good music and all those great classics that you love dancing to.

What was the first record that you bought? I can’t remember that far back! If you could play a song on the radio to seduce a celebrity what song would it be and who would you play it to? To Rihanna… “I may be a small chimney sweep but I’ve got an enormous brush!”

What radio shows did you listen to when you were younger and who did you (or do you) admire in the world of radio? As a kid for me it was Emperor Rosko on Saturday mornings for BBC Radio 1 and the Royal Ruler Tony Prince on Radio Luxemburg. They were the only people playing good soulful and funky music. For the last 10 years it’s all about Pete Tong. The music he plays is a bit boring but he sounds great on the mike.

What else are you famous for apart from radio? I wouldn’t say “famous” but many people on Mallorca will know me from the Pirates show as Captain Darling. I acted in the show for 14 years and loved every minute of it. In the end I couldn’t keep up with them! What is your favourite place on Mallorca and why? My wife will tell you my work, as I spend too much time there (or so she says). I would say my home, as I love seeing my two sons. What makes you happy? My kids, football, real ale and a pie! If you had one wish what would you ask for? That my kids enjoy their life as much as I’m enjoying mine. Where do you want to be and what do you want to be doing in five years time? Still here in Mallorca, still working and still enjoying life.

What radio have you done before? From 1982 to 1986, I presented a show on BBC Radio Birmingham at Pebble Mill. Then I did stuff on radio in Tenerife and on Spanish radio, six months on radio in Canada in 1989 (C.I.U.T.), then Womb Radio in Miami in 2001 and Luna Radio here in Mallorca in 2008.

What was the first record that you bought? T-Rex’s Ride a White Swan. Marc Bolan’s voice sold it! If you could play a song on the radio to seduce a celebrity what song would it be and who would you play it to? Ooooh! That’s a hard one, as I like a few! How about If You Were Here Tonight by Alexander O’Neal to Halle Berry, or Jennifer Anniston, or Monica Belucci, Penelope Cruz, Selma Hayek or Pamela Anderson? What else are you famous for apart from radio? My DJ work. The track Welcome to the Dance that I produced was number one in the UK and went big worldwide. Nearly as wide as the smile that it put on my face! What is your favourite place on Mallorca and why? The Malgrat Islands because of the sunsets. Plus most of the east coast for its peace and tranquillity. What makes you happy? Playing music, my kids, my moments of peace and “me” alone time. If you had one wish what would you ask for? More wishes! Seriously, I think that it would be to live long, fit and healthy. Where do you want to be and what do you want to be doing in five years time? In a garden in a cool rocking chair writing songs.

Life ISLAND CONNECTIONS Life & society Living

ARON “MAD MELLION” GARNER What is your radio show all about? It’s a Soccer-Am type show with plenty of cheek and banter between us two presenters, me and Richie. We both know a lot about football. (Well, one of us does; the other one just thinks that he does!) It is very controversial at times, but it’s all very tongue in cheek. What radio have you done before? Here on Mallorca, Luna Radio and English Radio Mallorca on Radio Marratxi; elsewhere the radio has all been in my head. What radio shows did you listen to when you were younger and who did you (or do you) admire in the world of radio? I love Galaxy Radio and Key 103 in the UK. JoJo on Galaxy is superb with a great voice and when she laughed it made me laugh – very infectious. I love her sense of humour. She is a real lads’ lass, if you know what I mean. What was the first record that you bought? I think it was Stand & Deliver by Adam and the Ants, but I could be wrong. I wasn’t an avid collector of records. I loved playing football on the rec, or darts in the garage. Sometimes I played with myself…. with a dice, pen and paper pretending that I was in a Division One football league. I was a very strange boy, quite a recluse really. Oh I miss that dark, damp garage! If you could play a song on the radio to seduce a celebrity what song would it be and who would you play it to? Dirty by Christina Aquilera for Cheryl Cole. Or if there was no celebrity around it would be Scatman, Insanity or Call on Me by Eric Prydz. Or what about Pump Up the Jam for Jennifer Aniston? I’d love to show her my lemon curd!

What else are you famous for apart from radio? I am not famous… “infamous maybe”, for the Mad Mellion role that I play in the Pirates Adventure and Pirates Uncut. In the Come Fly With Me show I just have a little part – but that’s what all the girls say about me! What is your favourite place on Mallorca and why? The Paro office in winter – I love it! Three months off work, chill out, relax, couple of café con leches, On a more serious note, I am in love with Port Pollença. It is just the most idyllic little coastal resort with a town square bordered by beautiful bars and restaurants. Perfect! What makes you happy? Making people laugh, and Liverpool Football Club winning games. I don’t care who we play as long as we win. If you had one wish what would you ask for? Another 10 wishes! One of which would be to win the Euro lottery. Who was it who said money can’t buy you happiness? Give me 10 million and I’ll show you how happy I can be! Where do you want to be and what do you want to be doing in five years time? I love performing so still on stage, radio and maybe TV? Either that or working for LFC!

HYBRID REVOLUTION Premiere of first “ZEM” motor yacht over 20 metres The green revolution is well-entrenched in all aspects of our lives – and not the least on the high seas. Presented at the Salone Nautico Internazionale in Genoa, Mochi Craft’s Long Range 23 is the first craft to obtain the RNA “Green Star Clean Energy and Clean Propulsion” certification; and in February it was also awarded the UIM Environmental Award for 2011. Both awards are in recognition of the activities carried out by Ferretti Group’s AYT (Advanced Yacht Technology) design and research marine centre, which worked on the development of the yacht in collaboration with the Studio Zuccon International Project. The Long Range 23’s distinctive innovations include the exclusive Ferretti Group patent “Zero Emission Mode” hybrid propulsion system and FER.WEY (Ferretti Wave Efficient Yacht) trans-planing hull. According to the team behind the design, the ZEM “combines the reliability of the traditional diesel, which when selected transmits power directly to the propellers, with the ability to cruise in ‘Zero Emission Mode’, driven by two 70 kW synchronous electric motors applied in series to the propeller shaft and engaging with the reduction gears. The motors are powered by a pack of lithium ion batteries, the most advanced technology in this field.” In announcing the award, the Union Internacionale Motonautique said, “The Mochi Craft Long Range 23 is a firstclass example of an environmentally-friendly motor yacht with the focus on reduction of consumption, emissions and noise. Scrupulous fluid dynamics studies were carried out both through the internal Computational Fluid Dynamics

52

(CFD) system and with models tested in the naval towing tank at Potsdam (Germany). These studies resulted in reduction of resistance and friction/attrition to movement mainly due to the hull. Several tests demonstrated that the Mochi Craft Long Range 23 consumed, at the same speed (i.e. 12 knots), half that of comparable motor yachts. It is also equipped with ‘parallel hybrid propulsion’, a diesel and electric system that permits the motor yacht to navigate at low or zero emission and allow navigation even in severely protected marine areas.” Mochi Craft’s aim with the Long Range 23 was to create an “expedition boat, designed for spending long periods at sea in maximum comfort and total safety, backed by exceptional environmental awareness with a perfect mix of avant-garde technology and ‘Made in Italy’ design. “The external lines are a synthesis of the Nordic ‘work boat’ tradition and refined Made in Italy taste... In the interiors, the choice of prized materials, warm woods like teak and oak, natural fabrics and cutting edge design solutions redefine the concept of on-board luxury and quality of life in the ‘expedition boat’ market.”

Nautical Update

Welcome to the new ML&S monthly nautical update. Or as Laura Penn likes to call it, “the nauti bits”. As editor of The Islander magazine, which has been bringing news and views on yachting and water sports to the Balearics for 15 years, I am very pleased to have the opportunity to reach out to the readership of ML&S. Just a few weeks ago we had in Mallorca the “Hoot for Yachting” campaign, one of the most dramatic and highly audible protests that the yachting industry has ever organised in Spain, or possibly the world. For the nine-day duration of the Palma Boat Show, hundreds of yachts in the ports of Palma and Portals blew their horns for up to five minutes at noon each day. Tens of thousands of words have been written in the yachting press over the last few years about why it became necessary for an entire industry to get so angry and vociferous, but I will try to boil it down to a few words here for you. Imagine you wanted to buy a family size boat and spend your weekends sailing the healthy and beautiful coastal environment that surrounds these islands. Assuming that you are a Spanish resident or citizen then the fiscal legislation demands that you register your new asset in Spain. Or in nautical terms... she (the boat, not the wife) has to be “Spanish flagged”. Then imagine that, being a good law-abiding

54

citizen, you’re happy to comply with that demand, only to find that you will have to pay 30 per cent over and above the original cost of the boat: made up of 18 per cent for IVA/ VAT and 12 per cent for registration (known as matriculation) tax. This is for all boats over eight metres (26.6 feet) long. It has virtually made the Spanish market extinct for these family boats, but also for the high-spending larger commercial charter yachts, which have been driven away to other countries where they are welcomed with fiscal incentives, and not punitive taxation penalties. Add to this the fact that the Spanish maritime legislation has still not dragged itself into the 21st century and recognised leisure boating as a separate job-creating, revenuegenerating industry. Broadly speaking, a commercial ship and a yacht used for leisure purposes have not been differentiated from each other, and treated accordingly under a maritime law that is centuries old. The fact is that no other country in Europe burdens its boating industry with such dra-

conian legislative and tax laws. Many of us in the yachting industry have been impressed with how the Partido Popular has listened to our commercial argumentation this last year. So, now that they have the reins of power in so many of the autonomous regions, let’s hope and pray they will turn their listening into action and give Spain back its deserved place in the world of leisure yachting... for sure it deserves no less! Next month I will tell you all about the superyacht events (international conference and regatta) that take place in Palma every year in the third week of June, and which we at The Islander sponsor and participate in. Peter Franklin is editor of The Islander magazine and secretary of the Balearic Nautical Business Association. The Islander is a free 32-page monthly publication in its 15th year and is distributed to 100 points situated wherever there are yachting and water sports facilities across the islands.

Salad Days… and Superfoods

HEALTHY CUISINE

TASTY IDEAS Jeni Cook is a health educator, writer and gourmet raw chef. For more information visit: rawhealthharmony.co.uk or rawteacher.com/rawlondon.

As spring merges into summer and plans for vacations begin, our thoughts turn to exposing more flesh and getting a beach-ready body. This means eating lighter food – ditching the bread and potatoes and adding more fruits, vegetables and salad.

The fragrance of the tarragon and sweetness of the peas makes this salad a great choice…

Cabbage, Peas and Tarragon Salad 2 cups fresh shelled peas or frozen 2 cups shredded green or red cabbage ½ cup finely diced red onion ½ cup chopped parsley 1 small bunch of fresh tarragon Dressing: 1 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon dried tarragon 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder pinch of cayenne pepper 1 garlic clove 2 teaspoons tamari soy sauce ¼ cup filtered water

Easy Fresh Fruit Salad 6 peaches, peeled, pitted, and chopped 1 pound strawberries, rinsed, hulled, and sliced ½ pound (225gr) green grapes, deseeded ½ pound (225gr) red grapes, deseeded 3 bananas, peeled and sliced 1¼ cup agave syrup, or to taste (optional) Dressing: juice of one lime ½ cup fresh pineapple juice 1 teaspoon ground ginger Combine the chopped and sliced fruits in a large serving bowl; toss gently. Drizzle with agave syrup. Whisk together the remaining ingredients in a small bowl. Pour the dressing mixture over the fruit and toss gently to combine. Cover and chill the fruit salad before serving. This fruit salad is enough for 10 to 12 people.

Mix all the ingredients in a salad bowl. Blend the dressing ingredients in a blender. Add more tamari if necessary. Pour over salad and gently toss to coat everything. Allow to marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes or more before serving.

Seaweed Salad Of course, for some, “rabbit food” springs to mind with just the mention of the word “salad”. In fact, my own earliest memories of salad, which was only available in the summer months, resembled just that! A plate sparsely arranged with limp lettuce smothered in salad cream, tomatoes, pickled beetroot, a few slices of cucumber, a spring onion and maybe half an avocado drenched in vinegar was the order of the day. Not very imaginative or exciting… no wonder I didn’t much care for it! I can happily say that those salad days have long gone. No longer does a salad have to mean a side plate of limp lettuce, thick slices of white onion, anaemic asparagus from a jar and a dollop of salad cream. No! These days a salad can hold its own as a satisfying and nutritious meal eaten all year round. With the increase in farmers’ markets, health stores and supermarkets, there is an abundance of fresh and organic produce to

56

choose from. These days one can be really adventurous and increase nutritional value and fibre to a salad by adding an array of raw vegetables, local and exotic fruits, edible flowers, sea vegetables and a variety of nuts and seeds and sprouts which will increase the protein content for vegans or vegetarians. Who knew you could eat flowers! Yes, the choice is exciting and endless. Salad greens are year round so are not restricted to the summer months, and they provide an abundance of vitamins and minerals including vitamin A, C, K, folate, calcium, potassium, iron, beta carotene, and phytonutrients, which help prevent chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Pound for pound the most concentrated sources of nutrients of any food are the dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, mustard greens, watercress, collard greens, rocket, Swiss chard, dandelion greens and sea vegetables, which come top in the

range of minerals; and all of these varieties can and should be included as part of a salad. Not necessarily all at once though! Even if you only want to eat a salad as a side dish it’s always best to eat it before eating your cooked meal as raw salads are loaded with enzymes that aid digestion.

TIPS Remember that it’s important to make sure that your salad is properly washed, dried and stored in the fridge. I use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar to remove any bacteria and pesticides that may be lurking, especially if they are not organic. I dry them in a salad spinner although putting them in a clean tea towel, pulling the four corners together then shaking works just as well. Also, where possible, try to buy organic produce as it is much higher in nutrients and kinder to the environment.

½ cup dried wakame and hijiki seaweed 1 or 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil juice of 1 lemon pinch chilli powder pinch salt 1 radish ½ cucumber 1 head organic lettuce or 1 bag mixed lettuce Soak seaweed for 15 minutes in water. Drain and squeeze out excess water. Toss with rest of ingredients.

Raw Kale and Avocado Salad Kale is very high in beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C, lutein and zeaxanthin, rich in calcium and considered a superfood. This salad is rich and satisfying. 1 large head of kale (curly or dino kale, whichever you prefer or is available), stems removed 1/2 teaspoon salt (helps soften and break down cell walls and give a cooked texture) juice of one lemon 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 large ripe avocado, diced cherry tomatoes, halved 1 yellow bell pepper, chopped to small dice 2 spring onions, finely chopped De-stem the kale by pulling the leaves away from the stem. Wash the leaves and spin or pat dry. Roughly chop the leaves and place in a big bowl. Add half a teaspoon of Himalayan or Celtic sea salt and “massage” the kale with your hands to soften it. After a couple of minutes it will get a wilted, almost cooked texture. Add the avocado, oil and lemon juice and massage until the avocado coats the kale. Let it marinate for 15 minutes. Add the cherry tomatoes and peppers. Toss to combine, adjust seasoning to taste and serve.

HEALTHY CUISINE Life & Living Roast Vegetable Salad with Quinoa and Harissa Dressing This is one of my favourite cooked salads inspired by a Delia Smith recipe and great for a dinner party. Very Moroccan!

For the vegetables: 1 small aubergine 2 medium courgettes 1 small squash, peeled 1 red pepper, deseeded 1 small bulb fennel 1 large red onion 2 fat cloves garlic, crushed small bunch fresh basil leaves, torn 3 tablespoons olive oil salt and black pepper For the salad: 1 bag organic mixed leaf salad or… fresh lettuce washed, dried and chopped

For the harissa dressing: 110ml extra virgin olive oil 1 rounded teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 level tablespoons ground cumin 2 heaped tablespoons tomato purée juice of 2 limes (4 tablespoons) For the quinoa: 2 cups quinoa 3 cups water or stock

Bring to the boil then cover and simmer on a very low heat for about 25 minutes or until all the liquid is absorbed Fluff with a fork and set aside. To garnish: Seeds of half a pomegranate (optional)

HEALTHY CUISINE Raw Pad Thai 1 courgette, peeled and shredded into very fine noodles on a mandoline or potato peeler 1 red pepper cut into long strips 1 carrot cut into long strips 1 cup bean sprouts 1 spring onion thinly sliced on an angle raw cashews or almonds ½ cup coriander Dressing: 2 tablespoons sesame oil 1 tablespoon almond butter ½ tablespoon Nama Shoyu or tamari 1 teaspoon minced ginger 1 teaspoon agave 1 teaspoon chilli powder 1 tablespoon lime juice (optional) Mix together in a bowl until well combined. Toss with courgette noodles and other vegetables and top with crushed cashews or almonds, and garnish with coriander.

This salad has an Italian flair…

Vegetable Carpaccio 1 yellow squash 1 courgette 2 spring onions 1 raw beetroot 1 head of fennel 4 red radishes 1 avocado, stoned and sliced ¼ cup of fresh mint crumbled goat or feta cheese to garnish (optional) Dressing: 2 tablespoons lemon-infused olive oil 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons good quality balsamic vinegar salt and pepper to taste To assemble: Prepare the roasted vegetables by cutting them into one-inch (2.5cm) dices, leaving the skins on. Preheat the oven to gas mark 9/475°F (240°C). Arrange the vegetables in the roasting tin, and sprinkle with the crushed garlic, basil and olive oil. Toss everything around in the oil to get a good coating and season with salt and pepper. Place the tin on the highest shelf of the oven for 30-40 minutes or until the vegetables are toasted brown at the edges. When the vegetables are done, remove them to a plate to cool. Meanwhile, cut the cheese into sugar cube-sized pieces. Make up the dressing by whisking all the ingredients together in a bowl, then pour into a serving jug. To serve the salad, place the quinoa in a large, wide salad bowl or serving dish and gently fork in the cubes of cheese together with the roasted vegetables. Next arrange the salad leaves on top and, just before serving, drizzle a little of the dressing over the top followed by a sprinkling of pomegranate seeds, and hand the rest of the dressing around separately.

58

Using a mandoline or sharp knife, slice the squash, courgette, fennel, beetroot and radish paper-thin. Arrange the slices attractively on a serving platter. Thinly slice the spring onions on an angle and scatter over the vegetable slices. Cut the fresh mint leaves into thin ribbons. Scatter the strips over the platter. Crumble goat or feta cheese to garnish (optional)

All the recipes featured here can be adapted to your taste and the availability of ingredients, so there are no firm rules. Here’s the skinny on adding sprouted seeds, nuts and pulses to your salads… NUTRITIOUS – seeds are packed with nutrients, and sprouted seeds are even better. As each grows, proteins, enzymes, vitamins and other nutrients increase while becoming more bio-available. At the same time toxins and enzyme inhibitors are reduced, increasing digestibility. FRESH – sprouts grown at home and harvested at the dinner table are the freshest food you’ll ever eat. They won’t have lost vitamins like shop-bought vegetables or have travelled around the world. They will be organically grown, full of life and energy. CHEAP – sprouting is ridiculously cheap! You can get pounds of greens for pennies. EASY – it all boils down to “just add water”. With few resources and very little time or effort, you can supply yourself with an abundance of live food, in your home, all year round. If you travel, they can too. VARIED – you can grow many more young plants than you would find in a shop. Your salads and recipes will always have something new; diversity is the spice of life! More info at: primalseeds.org/sprouting.htm

Natural Salt In all my recipes I like to use Himalayan salt or Celtic sea salt because… Himalayan crystal salt is the most beneficial, cleanest salt available on this planet, where the energy of the sun has dried up the original primal sea millions of years ago. This crystal salt is absolutely pristine and natural, identical to the ancient primal ocean. It contains all the elements found in our bodies. Unlike most salts, this ancient salt is not processed with harsh chemicals. Instead, it is mined by hand and stoneground. Himalayan salt has no preservatives or additives. The typical table and cooking salt in your grocery store has been “chemically cleaned”. What remains after typical salt is “chemically cleaned” is sodium chloride – an unnatural chemical form of salt that your body recognises as something completely foreign. Doctors and alternative therapists agree that Himalayan salt is the cleanest salt available on the planet to deliver remarkable health benefits. Celtic sea salt refers to naturally moist salt harvested from the Atlantic seawater off the coast of Brittany, France. This type of salt is harvested using the Celtic method of wooden rakes, allowing no metal to touch the salt. It is naturally air and sun-dried in clay ponds and gathered with wooden tools to preserve its living enzymes. Because it is unrefined, it contains all of the 84 beneficial live elements found in sea water, with no chemical and preservatives or any other additives.

DAS IN-ST YLE HOTEL DER BALEAREN

Review by Andrés Gelabert

Wine: Divins Seleccio 2008 Type: Red Appellation: Vi de la Terra Mallorca Winery: Divins (divins.es) Location: Selva, Mallorca Composition: 60% Syrah, 20% Manto negro, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon Source of grapes: The grapes used by Divins to make this wine come from their estate in Selva. The area had a long tradition of growing grapes in Mallorca but this had been lost to other types of agriculture. The village of Selva is located north-west of Inca and has a population of just under 3,000. The terrain is a mix of mountainous terrain and flat lowlevel land. Winemaking process: The grapes were picked in September 2008. The wine is made in traditional ways and has been aged in French oak barrels for 16 months. it is full bodied with its 14.5 per cent alcohol content.

Description: The colour of the wine is cherry red with medium intensity. The nose of the wine is where this red really stands out. Since it is a Syrah-based wine it has a wild, rough, robust, ripe dark fruit quality. The oak has integrated well with the wine, which gives off smoky and black pepper notes. When the wine is tasted you have the immediate impression that it is a full body, full tannin, full on wine. Decanting is recommended – and letting it breathe. The wine opens up and you obtain great spiced flavours from the Manto Negro. Serve with: Roasted red meats or game meats such as venison.

WINEMAKER, VITICULTURIST, AFICIONADO…

Wine notes: Divins is an initiative by a group of friends from Selva who wanted to restore the traditional grape growing region back to its roots. It is inspiring to see what young people can achieve when they are committed. This wine has a limited production of 2,500 bottles and is a treat. I recommend getting in touch with Divins through their website if you want to purchase the wine.

Andrés Gelabert was born in Mallorca but raised in southern California where his love for wine began. Gaining valuable experience from the wine industry in California and Texas, Andrés returned to Mallorca in 2000 to begin plans to build a winery. Currently he is the director of Bodegas Ángel in Santa María del Camí.

THE FOUR HILL LIES Golf is never simple. We can spend hours on the driving range trying to find a reliable swing and, just when we get to the point where we have found something, we go out on the course and never get an opportunity to test it. There is almost always some kind of slope to factor into the equation. Here we will look at the four basic types of “hill lies” and how to play them. In all cases take a slightly wider stance for stability and swing within yourself to avoid losing your balance. Take one extra club to allow for the “easy” swing. In the four photos coaching legend Butch Harmon shows us how it’s done.

UP HILL

When the ball lies on an upslope you must take a longer club as the upward angle of the slope tilts the clubface backward and therefore adds loft. Place the ball slightly more forward than normal, and try to get your shoulders parallel to the slope. If your shoulders are too level, you will most likely be too steep at impact. As Butch Harmon likes to say, “Set up with the slope, and then swing up the slope.” You should also adjust your aim at set up. Swinging uphill correctly tends to send the ball a bit left because your hands and arms are releasing upward through the stroke and that causes the clubface to rotate closed. So aim your body and club a little right of normal.

DOWN HILL

When playing from a down slope, take less club as the slope “delofts” the clubface. Position the ball back a little and, as with the uphill lie, feel as if you set up with your shoulders parallel to the slope. You probably won’t actually achieve this on a down

62

slope (especially a severe one) but it is important to have the feeling that your shoulders are going with the slope. If you don’t angle your shoulders, your body will be tilted against the slope in a conflicting manner, which is never good. You will almost certainly hit the ground before the ball. Swinging downhill correctly tends to send the ball right because you are extending your arms down the slope and “holding off “ the clubface rotation. Don’t worry about trying to release through impact; just point a little left to compensate.

SIDE HILL – Ball Below Feet

The big problem here can be reaching the ball without falling over. Most players will allow the weight to drift forward into their toes as this is the natural thing, and/or stand up during the downswing to avoid falling over. Neither of these two tendencies will result in consistent strikes from lies where the ball is below your feet. The secret here is to “sit” into the set up position. Lower your centre of gravity and

flex those knees. Your weight should be in your heels and it is really important that you maintain the knee flex throughout the swing. Because of this awkward sitting position, body turn during the swing is restricted. It will be more of a hands and arms type swing. Your body relative to the slope will make for a very upright swing and an open clubface at impact. This will curve the ball to the right so aim left and allow for the slice.

SIDE HILL – Ball Above Feet

This lie brings the ball closer to you, so you naturally stand a little taller. Grip the club shorter, down an inch or so to accommodate the shorter reach to the ball. This time get your weight a little more in your toes; gravity will be trying to pull you down the hill as you swing (to your heels). From this upright posture, the swing will be “flatter” or more around the body, not unlike a baseball swing. This creates more hand and arm rotation through the impact area, which results in the clubface closing at a faster rate than normal on the downswing. The flatter swing plane changes the angle of the club relative to the ground, which points the clubface to the left of the target. The more loft you have in your hands the more the face will point left. Aim right to allow for these factors and don’t be afraid to aim well right when the slope is steep and you are using a short iron.

EXERCISING OUTDOORS We need at least 30 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity every day but you don’t have to work out in a gym to get in shape. Outdoor exercises are more effective. Reasons to take your workouts outside: The natural terrain of the outdoors is perfectly adapted to get you in shape; the rough surfaces can allow you to burn more than 200 calories per hour. The air is cleaner… the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that indoor air is more than twice as polluted as outdoor air. A free daily dose of vitamin D through sunlight… a recent study found that people who are overweight are almost twice as likely to be deficient in vitamin D. Exercise for your mind… when you exercise outdoors, your mind has to focus and concentrate more than it would on a flat gym floor. Here in Mallorca? What can I say: take advantage of the blue skies!

TOP TIPS TO BURN MORE FAT I always say to my clients that small changes are the best way to ensure you shed the fat and keep it off. Gradually incorporate these tips into your daily routine and we will have you in shape in no time. 1. Visualise your plate… Use your plate to divide out your portions: half the plate should contain fresh live ingredients – salad or lightly steamed vegetables: the other two-thirds, lean protein and a thin slither of health fats – such as a few slices of avocado and a sprinkling of nuts. Portion control: eat off a side plate or bowl instead of a large dinner plate and eat more often. if you can’t finish what’s in front of you then cover it and save it for later, or pop it into a container and take it to work as a snack 2. Slow down the exercise motion… Try doing the down phase or “concentric” part

of an exercise more slowly. For example, lowering yourself or going down towards the floor in a squat or lunge. This is the stretching part of the motion for the muscle – slowing it down actually increases the strength in the muscle as you are struggling against gravity. Try counting to four on the way down and to two on the up 3. Gradually increase either your workout time or the intensity... Short bursts of highintensity exercise are great for boosting the metabolism. 4. Eat more fibre… Try a new vegetable or fruit every week – check to see what’s in season and what has been grown locally. 5. Climb in twos… Try to climb two steps at a time – you really give your rear a workout and this has been shown to burn up to 90 additional calories an hour.

ANTIOXIDANTS Looking after the outside… but what is happening inside your body? Your antioxidant level is a very accurate measurement of your overall state of health. In other words, people who have a high antioxidant level rarely get ill and have a high quality of health. On the reverse side of this, people who have a low level of antioxidants will constantly have coughs and colds or some kind of virus or illness.

TOP SNACKS FOR wHEN YOU’RE IN A RUSH Eat less but more often… Struggling to get those mini meals in – try these quick snacks: • Hard-boiled egg • 2 tablespoons of home-made humus or bean dip stuffed into a nori sheet • ½ cup of berries and cup of organic yogurt with tablespoon of flax seeds • 1 scoop of protein powder, 1 cup of ice, ½ banana, ½ cup of water – blended • Home-made whole wheat or spelt muffin • An apple and four slices of chicken breast Every time you eat protein you boost your metabolism. Failure to eat enough protein means your body breaks down its own muscle mass for fuel. Make sure you are getting enough protein; eat small meals regularly throughout the day to keep your metabolism ticking over.

Quite often the beginnings of, for example, abscess in the mouth or ulcers are a warning sign that there is something else going on inside your body which may be a lot more serious. This is what is called the beginnings of inflammation – or silent inflammation, something building up inside that we may not be aware of. if left unchecked it can often manifest itself in high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes and even cancers. So what do antioxidants actually do? They protect the cells in our bodies and ultimately the insides of our bodies from being broken down. We need antioxidants to protect the insides of our bodies and the only way to get them is to ingest them: i.e. our bodies are unable to manufacture them. To explain… basically the cells in our body are constantly being broken down by free radicals. The same is shown when you cut an apple in half and after a while it begins to brown? This is what is happening to the inside of our bodies. So how do we make sure that we have enough antioxidants in our bodies – or that the cells in our bodies are protected? Well, I have an amazing machine called a Biophotonic scanner; its ultraviolet light shines into the tissue in the palm of the hand and reflects off the antioxidants in the tissue, thus giving an immediate reading as to what your antioxidant level is. The results are incredible and instantaneous. I would highly recommend you make an appointment to come along and have your level and the level of your family checked.

come along and have some fun. Always best to email me as classes are subject to change. Sign up to the group on Facebook, add some friends to the group and qualify for free give-aways and discounts. Put aside your hang-ups about not being fit enough and get down with the 20, 30, 40 and 50-year-olds (exercises are modified depending on your fitness levels). never exercised before? then all the more reason to get your booty down to a workout: beach-front Palma or in the beautiful surroundings of reads, where you can stay for a power smoothie afterwards or massage those tired muscles. otherwise finish off your fitness session with a few laps in their very tempting pool. the bootcamp schedule is set to change so make sure you check mallorcafitnesscamp.com. THE SECRET TO FLAWLESS SKIN An exploration into the world of foundation and sun protection fusion

I remember growing up in California, in June, as soon as the school bell rang on Fridays my girlfriends and I would jump on the bus and head down to Santa Monica beach to start working on our summer colour. We would slather ourselves in baby oil the entire weekend trying to perfect our Californian tan.

Now I live on the magical Island of Mallorca and to my surprise I see all ages of women lying on the beach repeating my history. It’s been a few generations since my sun days and I have learned about how damaging those delicious rays can be. However, we can still enjoy them because, thank goodness, now we have the tools to enjoy them safely. I grew up in Los Angeles so I often look to the starlets of our day to see what routines and products they are using to cover, enhance and protect their skin. The newest foundations are a hybrid of flawless cover, protection and enhancers with full-spectrum SPF. Who could have known that we would advance so far; that we could truly have it all. When we look at Mila Kunis, we see the embodiment of an Etruscan beauty – her alabaster skin glows. I researched into her beauty tips and tricks, and discovered that she keeps herself totally out of the sun. She favours the ultra elegant products from Omorovicza (Budapest) – a line that uses Hungarian thermal waters in all its products. This story began over 2,000 years ago, when mineral cosmetology was discovered,

66

and that’s what makes this Hungarian line so unique. Mila has shared with insiders the secret of what she uses on a daily basis: a hybrid of tinted moisturiser with an SPF of 15. The product is Sun Kiss, which evens out skin tone, conceals blemishes perfectly and provides full-spectrum sun protection. So, if she is dashing from limousine to red carpet, her skin is fully protected. She will keep that alabaster glow for years to come by being cautious and gentle with her skin. Skin reflects so much: do not underestimate the look of flawless, well-maintained skin.

Taylor Swift is a young woman with a unique beauty, to match her wonderful singing style. She has fair skin, and is not a sun worshipper. She often tends to use a bronzer if she wants to get that bronzed glow. She is a busy young woman who juggles acting and singing with a romantic life. She is healthy and is reported to have said that she cannot live without one of the most effective hybrid products on the market today, Oclipse. A successful, efficient, popular and incredible multi-

tasker, it not only fights the causes of wrinkles and age spots but also prevents them. It has broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection as well as moisturising properties. Named the number one sunscreen by Total Beauty, it multi-tasks as a sun block, tinted moisturiser and skin primer. Believe me: you will want to wear this product every day. I have added it to my regime and I can honestly say I do not go a day without it. If you look at Taylor Swift with her doll-like sweetness and her rosy cheeks, she is a true trend-setter, with the delicacy of a butterfly.

Beyonce Knowles has blown us all away with her exotic allure, strength and sexiness. We have often seen her parading gorgeously down a beach or two. Whether it is Miami, Jamaica or the south of France she always looks flawless, and has the look of a true bronzed goddess. The myth that Afro-American women do not suffer sun damage is untrue. So even our exotic goddesses cover up in style. Beyonce uses the newest, trendiest and most fun make-up line on the market – in true celebrity style. The power-house Hissyfit Saving Face foundation gives lightmedium to heavy coverage with an ultimate protection of SPF 50. It gives full-spectrum protection, comes in all shades and has the added advantage of being packed with wonderful anti-oxidants such as pomegranate and green tea. That truly makes it the ultimate multi-tasking foundation. When you go to the beach, these new products will guarantee that you look and feel your best. Knowing that the new breed of foundations are thinking ahead secures your skin for years to come. My personal favourite for everyday wear is Christian Dior’s Teint Haute Extreme with an SPF of 25. This is a lightweight, long-lasting foundation that stays in place all day.

When you are out this summer shopping for the best sunscreen, think about combining sun protection with a cover – so you can be bare-faced and beautiful. You will feel safe and proud that you are getting the best out of the sun without having to worry about damaging your skin.

How to...

Apply simple beach make-up WITH THE HOT SUN AND HUMID WEATHER WE GET HERE ON MALLORCA IT CAN SOMETIMES BE HARD TO MAINTAIN A FRESH LOOK ALL DAY, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE HIT THE BEACH. NOT ALL OF US LIKE TO GO AU NATURAL AND WE FEEL MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE WITH SOME SORT OF MAKE-UP ON, BUT MORE OFTEN THAN NOT WE FIND IT MELTING AWAY AFTER A FEW HOURS IN THE SUN. MY TIPS ON THE OPPOSITE PAGE ExPLAIN HOW TO APPLY A SIMPLE BEACH MAKE-UP LOOK AND KEEP IT LOOKING FRESH ALL DAY. By Jennifer Jane

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel – €39.95 for 200ml, Muller

1. APPLY AN OIL-FREE MOISTURISER/SPF cream to prepare the skin such as Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel. Jennifer Jane is an international make-up expert, trained, qualified and experienced in all aspects of professional make-up and based on Mallorca. Jennifer offers a wide range of creative and professional make-up services, from special occasions to video/film and photo shoot production across the UK and Europe.

2. TO KEEP YOUR MAKE-UP IN PLACE, use a silicone-based, oil-free primer such as Smash Box Photo Finish Primer (£26.65 from justbeautydirect.co.uk). Make-up primers are designed to smooth the skin, fill lines, absorb oil and allow make-up or foundation to last longer.

Maybelline Unstoppable – €3.69, Muller

3. APPLY THE PRIMER to the eyelids and also to the lips, to help your eye make-up and lipstick last all day.

MAC Moisture Tint spf 15 (€25) available from El Corte Ingles Makeup Forever Aqua Cream – €20, El Corte inglés

4. THE FOUNDATION YOU CHOOSE, again, should be oil-free and preferably silicone-based. This should be applied all over the face using either a foundation brush or, if you don’t have one of these, your fingers will do just fine (Lancôme Teint De idole). 5. APPLY SOME wATERPROOF CREAM to powder eye shadow such as Aqua Cream, a waterproof cream colour by Makeup Forever, available at El Corte inglés – sweeping the colour over each eyelid with an eye shadow brush. Choose a nice summery pastel colour or golden tones.

Mac Tinted Lip Conditioner SPF 15 – €15, El Corte inglés Sashbox Photo Finish – €37, chemcopharmacy. com

6. IF YOU NEED TO DE-SHINE YOUR FACE, instead of applying powder, which may end up looking cakey in the heat, pat your skin with some blotting papers – these are available from Muller and most make-up brands, and are easy to keep in your beach bag. 7. APPLY A wATERPROOF EYELINER such as Maybelline Unstoppable along the roots of the upper lashes. Avoid oil-based eyeliners as these will generally smudge and rub off during the course of the day. You can then apply your mascara, again making sure you choose a waterproof one such as Mac’s Splashproof Mascara.

Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra – €33.95, Muller

Mac Splashproof Mascara – €18, El Corte inglés

8. FINISH YOUR LOOK with a slick of SPF lip balm, which will not only give you a nice wash of colour but also protect your lips at the same time (Mac Tinted Lip conditioner SPF 15). You can also dab a bit on your cheeks if you want a bit of colour!

For more advice on how to create different make-up looks for any occasion contact Jennifer at info@jjmakeup.com.

Fake your way to a golden glow this summer! When we have a tan we always feel a lot sexier but baking ourselves in the sun to achieve it is not particularly good for us. More and more of us are becoming aware that the sun’s UV rays contribute to premature ageing as well as increasing the chances of developing skin cancer.

If you want to take better care of your skin by avoiding the sun, but still want a golden glow, then using a fake tan is a great idea. Some of you may be put off by a bottled bronzed look but I promise it’s pretty simple to avoid streaks, patches or the “Tangoed” look. The first thing to understand about fake tan is that you get what you pay for. So be sure to purchase a reputable brand of tan. San Tropez is the most famous and can be applied by you or in a salon. Other recommended brands include Clarins, Clinique and Fake Bake. Cheaper products whose reputations have been proven include L’Oreal Bronze Sublime, Ambre Solaire Duo-Tan and Boots No.7 Self-Tan, all of which contain tints that enable you to see where you’ve applied the product and where you need to touch up. When it comes to selecting the right fake tan for you, it is generally down to trial and error. What looks good on your friend may not necessarily suit you. If you are just starting out with fake tans, I would recommend opting for one that is gradual and builds up over a few days. These are also more forgiving when it comes to making mistakes, which may be quite likely if you have never used them before. To get the best results possible, learn how to apply your fake tan correctly. Read the instructions properly and always apply with latex gloves onto clean skin. Once you have bought your fake tan product, follow my simple guidelines for streak-free application: • Remove any unwanted hair from your body before you self-tan at least 24 hours in advance to avoid irritation and/or dark spots where the tan has seeped in to your open hair follicles. • Exfoliate your skin before you apply your fake tan, being sure to focus on drier parts of your body such as elbows, knees and ankles to ensure a smooth, streak-free application. • When applying your tan, be careful not to rub it into your skin; instead, gently glide it over your skin – rubbing can lead to uneven application. • Make sure you don’t miss any areas. It doesn’t matter if you go over the same area twice –fake tans only look patchy if you miss bits, not if you go over the same area. • If it’s your first time and you’re worried that your chosen product is too dark for you, mix it with a moisturiser. This will provide a lighter effect, which you can then reapply the next day if you want it to be deeper. If you feel nervous about applying a fake tan yourself, salon treatments are available. Your therapist will exfoliate, moisturise and apply the tan for you, and will advise you on applying a tan yourself. After application, wait 10 minutes before you put on your clothes, to avoid staining them or streaking the tan. Most tans take around two to four hours to develop; many of them actually continue to work overnight so you may wish to plan your tanning in advance if you are using it for a special occasion.

MAXIMISE THE VALUE OF YOUR UK PENSION FUND! It may surprise readers to learn that the average UK pension fund is worth about £30,000, which – although a decent amount for any of us in cash terms – is only enough at age 65 to provide a pension of about £150 a month. What is more, this will be a fixed pension that will erode over time with inflation and will stop when you die, with no residual value. Q. What can you do about it? A. Take control of your frozen UK pension and transfer it to QROPS (Qualified Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme) and benefit from the huge opportunities that are available to you. Q. Is it difficult to arrange? A. No, there are a few forms to initially fill in – this allows us to tell you what your pension fund is worth (quite surprising in most cases). Once we have the valuation we tell you what the fund is worth, the arrangement fee for administering the service and what you will net back. It is then up to you to go ahead or not. If

you do not wish to proceed you walk away and there are no fees to pay; if you go ahead the agreed fees are deducted from the pension fund retrieved for you. Q. How long will it take? A. The normal turnaround time is four to eight months, depending how quickly your pension provider respond to requests. Q. What are the risks or negatives? A. There are no negatives or risks; this is approved by HMRC UK. All you need to remember is this is part of your pension fund to provide for your latter years so invest or use the funds wisely.

The latest meeting of the women’s business SPM Club, held at Hotel Port Adriano in El Toro, included a talk on nutrition and beauty. The concept behind the SPM Club is the adoption of a system of exchange of favours in an economic crisis that has affected everyone, and it is a way of helping businesses to promote themselves to potential customers, present and future. The club meets every third Thursday of the month and always in different places, with new members recommended by previous members. All members have a membership card that gives discounts to various stores and hotels. The next event, on Thursday 16 June at Hotel Meliá del Mar, will include a fashion show of swimwear and beachwear. A nice touch is that members of the club are encouraged to wear a particular item of clothing at the lunch meetings. At this most recent event it was a hat and at the next lunch it will be to wear white.

The Barrie Chronicles wATCH yOur LAnguAge HAVING MOURNED THE LOSS OF THE APOSTROPHE JUST LAST MONTH, YOU MIGHT BE GETTING THE IMPRESSION I FANCY MYSELF AS AN ASPIRING LANGUAGE GURU. By Barrie Suart

But I suppose my interest in the written word has its origins in my recent tendency to take issue with the billing practices of certain large corporations concerned with banking, energy provision and postal services. Incandescent with rage at being overcharged or receiving lousy service, I write in the most abusive terms I can muster, only to receive a reply along the lines of… “We thank you for taking time to contact customer services for we do value your feedback…” I wonder what they really mean? The thing about the spoken word is that you can usually tell what kind of mood the communicator is in. It’s difficult to mistake the frame of mind of someone delivering a message through bared teeth but not so easy when computer generated. What was Dolores thinking when she composed these offerings on the menu of a charming little hotel we recently visited in La Mancha? Penn to Paper

Here we go then… the summer season is here and it’s time to show the body to the world! The sun is out and so are bits of us that have been undercover for eight months. When it comes to the bod there is so much more general maintenance to do in summer: pedicures, shaving, exfoliating, waxing… not that I wax! I tried it once and it went beyond my low pain threshold so now I reckon that there is nothing that can’t be eradicated with a Bic razor. Hair is always a problem, with sun and sea turning once shiny locks into a Brillo pad, and then there is beach fashion to consider. We Brits are not very good at looking chic in sand. To be fair, we don’t get a lot of practice at it! Whilst the Mediterranean types grow up knowing how to slink into a tanga and still look fabulous, armed with a fortnight’s experience sitting on a deck chair on Brighton’s shingle we tend to look distinctly self-conscious and shabby whenever we strip down to our swimming gear. Needing some help I decided to ask the advice of a mate who is a stylist, and there is good and bad news if you wish to be trendy this summer. Apparently yellow is this season’s colour. Gold is also in so it is time to bling up! I am a bit worried about this piece of hot fashion news as the last thing I wore which was yellow was my school gym slip. What kind of yellow, I wonder? There is a whole range of “yellow” from primrose (too girly) to mustard (too yuk). In fact, there are 22 different yellows so which one is a must this summer? This yellow fad does not extend to hair. Blondes may have more fun, but they are sooooo yesterday. Peroxide is past and red is right. Brunettes, titans and redheads delight in the fact that you are what is hot this year. The even better news is that hair should be “messy”. Straight, sleek, silky tresses are out… big, shaggy and tousled are in. Now this is more me! Music to my ears, as I am a past master at the “just got out of bed” look (probably because that is what I have just done). So the word from those who frequent the catwalks is that if you want to be at the cutting edge of vogue during the summer months you should affect the “redsetter wearing a gold collar dragged through a hedge backwards look”. Excellent! I think I can manage that with a bit of help from a can of hairspray and the new Salvation Army shop in Santa Ponça. I am so happy that I work in radio and not TV any more! Laura Penn is a presenter on Radio One Mallorca.

PSYCHIC CONNECTIONS IN MALLORCA

Island bulletin Life & Living

MR GAY MALLORCA Twenty-year-old Spaniard David Vilches won the Mr Gay Mallorca 2011 competition at a crowded Plaza de Los Pinos in Cala Ratjada. This was the first year of the contest and it was held in collaboration with the hoteliers association of Capdepera Calas and the Supplementary Supply Association bars, restaurants and entertainment venues, with the support of Llevant City Council. The jury was composed of different personalities from the municipality, and José Liberto López de la Franca, the charismatic host of The Crown Jewels, and the designer and stylist Erik Putzbach were special guests. David, who is studying to be a health and social specialist, took the title competing against seven other candidates. He said he was “proud” to be able to represent the island at the Mr Gay Spain contest in Madrid on 1 July.

MEDIEVAL FAYRE IN CAPDEPERA Time turned back 700 years to the Middle Ages in Capdepera during the three-day Medieval Fayre. The event was mainly concentrated within the castle walls of the old town along the main roads and plazas, with a medieval market of artisan stalls selling crafts and food. Now in its 11th year there were displays of medieval music, arts displays, folk songs (Xeremiers) and workshops for the kids, with one of the most popular demonstrations being jousting on horseback.

IRONMEN… AND WOMEN… IN ALCÚDIA

SALVATION ARMY SHOP OPENS IN SANTA PONÇA

The gruelling Ironman 70.3 Mallorca triathlon took place in Alcúdia, with more than 1,700 competitors from 47 countries taking part. The men’s race was won by German Andreas Raelert, and Briton Emma-Kate Lidbury took the women’s title. The race was sponsored for the first time by travel company Thomas Cook and over 2,000 spectators lined the route, with many roads from Inca to Alcúdia closed for the duration of the contest.

The Salvation Army have been busy here on the island. In response to the earthquake in southern Spain they sent a van of supplies and a team to help the people made homeless in Lorca. Three Salvation Army officers from Mallorca, Captain Sandra and Santi Careño and Captain Jenny Jalca, travelled to Lorca via Denia to offer assistance and aid.

The first element was swimming a circuit of 1.9 kilometres from Alcúdia marina, followed by 90-kilometre cycling course up into the Tramuntana mountains and then a 21-kilometre running race. Following his win Raelert paid credit to the organisers saying, “This competition is the beginning of my season and I did not know where I was standing. I am happy that it went so well. Congratulations to all finishers and a huge compliment to the sponsors and the organising team; it was a great race.” Britain’s Emma-Katy Lidbury clocked up a time of 4:33:18. “I knew that I was strong at swimming and on the bike, but I was not sure about the run. Now I am just happy that it worked out,” she said.

As they took clothes and blankets from the shops here they now need to restock, especially as they have recently opened a second shop in Santa Ponça. The easiest shops to find are in Palmanova (C/ Miguel de los Santos Oliver, 2) or the new shop in Santa Ponça (C/ Puig des Teix, 7). Captains David and Elizabeth McCaw-Aldworth will be happy to take your donations.

Psychic Joe Power visited Mallorca for the first time to hold a weekend of psychic development. The internationally renowned medium, and author of The Man Who Sees Dead People, hosted a two-day course at the beautiful setting of the Randa Monastery and, due to popular demand, he also gave private readings over an extra two days in Santa Ponça.

Island bulletin ISLAND TURNS BLUE!

Joe claims that he uses clairaudience, clairvoyance and clairsentience to communicate with the spiritual world. He has worked with police forces in the UK to help in murder enquiries. He is also keen to help other people develop their own psychic abilities and started the Six Sense Academy, which intends to hold another weekend course on the island in October.

DANISH STYLE Miki Ortega is a man determined to give Mallorca a make-over! The former resident hairdresser at La Residencia Hotel in Valldemossa, Miki is now busy organising styling parties for groups on the island. “There is no need to get a new wardrobe when you can style your old one,” he says. Having reached the top of his profession in his native Denmark, gaining awards at several top national hair shows, Miki came returned to live and work on Mallorca, where he spent much of his childhood. He has become “stylist to the stars” on the island, with clients including Lynne Franks, Caroline Corr, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Richard Branson and Paris Hilton. His new idea is get groups of ladies (or gents) together to have makeover evenings for hair and clothes. For more information visit: mikkii.eu.

In an unprecedented result, the Partido Popular won a landslide victory in the elections. José Ramon Bauza, former Mayor of Marratxi, has become the youngest President of the Balearics at the age of 40. His PP (conservative) party gained 35 seats in the regional parliament with 46 per cent of the vote (an increase of seven seats on the 2007 election). The PSOE (socialist) party now has 14 seats (down two). The Partido Popular also won the majority of municipalities, including Palma, and control of the Consell de Mallorca. In his address to the crowd of jubilant supporters at the PP headquarters on election night, Bauza said that he and his party had been given a huge responsibility and that work would begin immediately to help the 144,000 unemployed people across the Balearics.

GOLFERS’ HELP FOR HEROES Krista Hyer is a woman on a mission! Since the qualified counsellor first saw a plea for help from a local cancer sufferer on a website she has been working tirelessly to set up a support group for English speakers. “Although the hospital treatment in Mallorca is superb, it’s shocking to discover how little practical help there is,” she said. “For example, breast cancer victims have to go to the UK or the mainland to obtain pretty bras, and there’s little information given out about where to buy wigs or what to rub on itchy scalps – all the little things that make the patient feel even more vulnerable and isolated.” The Cancer Support Group aims to provide assistance and information while also enabling people to speak to others who have been through the trauma they may be currently experiencing. The renowned Macmillan network in the UK is offering its training and infrastructure expertise to the new local group. The organisation aims to hold regular meetings in two or more different locations to enable the maximum number of people to attend. “It’s often difficult to walk into a room full of strangers for the first time and this is even more true if you’re feeling ill and unsure of yourself,” Krista explained, “so we’re hoping that friends and relatives will offer to accompany the sufferer and provide some Dutch courage. After all, the group is for anyone who has been touched by cancer, past and present, victim or carer, anyone who wishes to know more or who is willing to listen to those who need to talk or are living with cancer or currently undergoing treatment.” For more information contact Krista on Tel. 661 080 101 or to receive regular emails on meetings and events contact: cancersupportinmallorca@hotmail.com.

iN PERSON Life & Living

My Mallorca Dr Michael Stoma Cala Viñas

Dr Michael Stoma of the Portals surgery collected the award for 2011 European Citizen of the Year at the Europe Day celebrations in Palmanova. He accepted the award on behalf of the Mediterranea charity, which he founded 15 years ago with his wife Victoria. The charity now helps people here on Mallorca and all over the world, including schools in Ethiopia, a hospital in Ghana and children with cancer in Cuba (ongmediterranea.com). What originally brought you to Mallorca? My mother when I was two years old. She came to live near her mother and stepfather after splitting up with my father. Which is your favourite place on Mallorca? Swimming out in to the middle of the Deia Cala at 6am in the summer. There is no water, no light and no view quite like it elsewhere. Have you visited any of the other Balearic islands? All of them. Which is the most fascinating place you have visited in the world? Musée d’Orsay. What is your favourite Mallorca dish? Frito Mallorquin but my doctor does not allow me to eat it too often because of its mega cholesterol content. And drink? A good red wine without sulphites.

What is your attitude to social networking sites? Used for the right reasons they can be a great aid to communication, distribution of information and ideas. What is the last film you watched? Para Que Sirve Un Oso? It was charming. We took our little daughters to see it and we all enjoyed it a lot. What animal do you identify with? A busy bee… never a moment wasted, and never a moment bored. Do you have any unfulfilled ambitions? Loads! Painting, writing books, learning to play the piano and trumpet, learning how to fly… I could go on forever. Desert Island book? Titus Groan Trilogy. Which person (living or dead) do you most admire and why? Solomon Grundy… with his work he keeps

the world going around. He provides stability, pays taxes, helps old ladies cross the street, puts his garbage in the right containers. He has no moments of blatant fame or glory, he is always humble and considerate, and it is with his little monthly contribution to Mediterranea that we can keep on feeding and helping so many people both here and overseas. Thank you Solomons, both male and female, and thank you in the name of all the organisations that you all help the world over. Guilty pleasure? Parrillada de pescado by the sea. Why is the charity Mediterranea so special? A few single words might explain it better than a long text. One could say that Mediterranea is: independent, cost-effective, non-political, non-denominational, impartial, open, transparent, observant, fun, courageous, determined, efficient, ingenious and open to all.
