Mallorca… dream wedding destination

P

lanning a successful and memorable wedding requires impeccable organisational skills, a fair degree of patience and compromise, and some key decision-making covering a vast spectrum of aspects related to the event. Perhaps the most important decision – and certainly one of the first (after choosing your spouse-to-be) – is the location.

Some couples will want a quiet ceremony in the local registry office, followed by an intimate dinner at a favourite restaurant; others, while also preferring to stay close to home, will opt for a grander affair with a church ceremony and a lavish reception for family and friends. An increasing number of couples, however, are looking further afield, to a more exotic location, where the weather is benign and reliable; the infrastructure is well-established (especially transport connections from around the world for distant family) and the options are varied and inspiring – from mansion, museum, castle, country club or hotel resort to beach, gardens or even a yacht. In short, a destination such as Mallorca, where they are able to choose from a vast array of exceptional venues, locations and settings. With that in mind, and taking into account that it is not only visitors but also residents who will be planning their dream wedding here on the island, this issue features a special supplement packed with advice, information and personal testimonials on everything related to weddings. Wedding planner to the stars Frank D. Matthée sets the tone with an authoritative and intriguing look at the main wedding trends for 2011; while experienced international floral designer Joanna Walton guides us through the sometimes overwhelming choice of styles for themes, favours, catering and table decorations. We also offer haute couture fashion ideas for the bride, bridegroom and bridesmaids, including chic accessories; provide invaluable beauty tips; learn how the top photographers turn a picture into a thousand words; and have a light-hearted look back at our contributors’ own recollections of weddings – and marriage. Maintaining the theme, we are delighted to feature Eva Longoria on the cover, and find out why she “loves” married life with French basketball star Tony Parker. Next month we will be back with another bumper issue, this time featuring all the joy, pleasures splendour and – most important of all – kind and generous spirit of the festive season.

EVA LONGORIA Contented housewife on… “Why I love marriage” When most celebrities start going public in gushing terms about their marriage or relationship, you can sense a messy separation is probably just months, maybe weeks, away. Call it Sod’s law, or simply the consequences of fame under increasing and more invasive public scrutiny – where celebrities seem unable to avoid the precarious lure of making unwise declarations on TV magazine presenters’ sofas and social networking media. In recent interviews, Eva Longoria has been quite forthcoming about her own marital bliss but – as a Hollywood star known for her down-to-earth private life and avoidance of silliness – she will (hopefully) be able to avoid the curse. Previously married to General Hospital TV star Tyler Christopher from 2002 to 2004, Eva met current husband Tony Park in November 2004, though they didn’t start going out together for two months. She has recalled that Parker – a French basketballer playing for the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs – proposed, on 30 November 2006, amidst candles and rose petals. Their official wedding was a civil ceremony at the Paris City Hall on 7 June 2007, officiated by the mayor, where Eva wore a Chanel-designed white tulle and sequin-embroidered dress and tulle jacket. One week later they held a Roman Catholic ceremony at the Eglise Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois. Created by Venezuelan designer Angel Sanchez, the bride’s grown was described by an Associated Press correspondent as “a silk wool and silk gazar scoop-back mermaid gown embroidered with silver metallic”. French menswear label De Fursac provided the groom’s suit. Both wore Piaget Possession wedding rings: hers made from 18-carat white gold with two rows of 80 brilliant-cut diamonds, separated by a row of 27 square-cut diamonds; and his matching his wife’s 18-carat white gold but without the stones. Their wedding reception was held at a 17th century castle south of Paris, Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte, where the guests reportedly included Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones; Eva’s fellow stars from Desperate Housewives, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman and Nicolette Sheridan; Sheryl Crow; Jessica Alba; Victoria Beckham; Jamie Foxx; Lionel

Ritchie; and Thierry Henry. Later they honeymooned in the Caribbean islands of Turks and Caicos. Recalling their wedding day, Parker said, “Eva really wanted to get married in France. It’s a beautiful country, a country of love and a place that is very special for us. It was important to her that we get married there.” So, three years on, what is the secret of their marital success? “I love being married to Tony,” Eva said

celebrity Life & Livingprofile in an interview with the Mirror. “He and I get through things with a lot of laughter and a lot of the same goals and values in life – and it doesn’t hurt that he’s also the cliché of tall, dark and handsome. I think I’ll keep him.” It probably doesn’t hurt that Parker is also seven years younger than Longoria: he was born on 17 May 1982; she on 15 March 1975 (Pisces and Taurus, respectively). In another online interview, she declared, “We are just best friends. I love his company and I am married to the person I want to be with. I cannot ask for more. We respect each other as people and as a couple, and we trust each other. The best thing is that he loves to surprise me and I love to be surprised. “Our relationship is more solid than ever and we have so much fun together. Tony and I would love to be together forever, but the only way you get to forever is one day at a time. “He has an amazing passion for everything he does, but the best is his innocence about love and relationships. And we love to travel. We love laughter and music and we keep healthy.” One potential complication in their marriage is that he is required to shuttle between the US and France, to play in the national team, and can be away for weeks at a time. “I just try to do the best I can to fly to meet him wherever he is,” Eva told the Mirror. “We never go longer than two weeks without seeing each other. I once flew to Switzerland just to have dinner with him.” As for having a family, Eva admitted, “I’m not getting any younger”, but added, “We want to wait until the time’s right.” Perhaps also tempting fate, she said she relied on good friend Victoria Beckham for advice. “Victoria’s a lovely woman. Both our husbands are sports stars and they both travel, and Victoria’s had some great advice for me on how to cope with that. “She’s a great mother, too. If you ever see her around her kids, you’ll see that everything – everything – is about them and David. She’s a good role model. I really want my marriage to be like hers.” Born in Texas, the youngest of four daughters of a farming couple who can trace their routes in the US to before the English-speaking settlers, Eva recalled years later that early life was hard, with little money to give her a decent upbringing. Her older sisters called her “la prieta fea” (“the ugly dark one”) but the ugly duckling was determined to become a model. She sent photos to a modelling agency, was de-

nied because of her height, and went on to gain a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology. Around this time, in 1998, she was rewarded for her commitment, winning the title of Miss Corpus Christi USA. She entered a talent contest, moved to Los Angeles and was signed by a theatrical agent. Her first TV role came in 2000, as a guest star on an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210. After several other roles gaining moderate success she made it to the A-list in 2004 when hired to play Gabrielle Solis in Desperate Housewives. The show became an immediate hit but for Longoria it was the culmination of a long and far from easy road to the top. “I think it’s funny when people say I’m an overnight sensation, because I’ve been working at it for 10 years.” As well as currently filming the seventh series of Desperate Housewives, she is considering

various film roles, and continuing her extensive and varied charity work, including that undertaken by her own organisation, Eva’s Heroes, which helps developmentally disabled children. Named philanthropist of the year by the Hollywood Reporter entertainment trade publication, for “her commitment to Latino causes and giving back to the community”, she is studying for a masters degree in chicano studies and political science. “Because of my involvement with the NCLR (National Council of La Raza) and my charity work, I really wanted a better, more authentic understanding of what my community has gone through so I can help create change.” In the meantime, TV viewers will be able to see her in another “role” underpinning her versatility: as presenter of the MTV Europe Music Awards in Madrid on 7 November.

NEW RELEASES, WHAT’S BEING FILMED AT THE MOMENT, WHAT’S IN PRE-PRODUCTION AND WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE… MICKY REYNOLDS LOOKS AT WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF MOVIES

MOVIE OF THE MONTH

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

(Worldwide release: 19 November) So here it is: the final run in for Harry Potter (even though author J.K. Rowling has hinted she might write another book), which is being released over two parts (the second is scheduled for 15 July 2011). Harry (DANIEL RADCLIFFE), Ron (RUPERT GRINT), and Hermione (EMMA WATSON) must find the pieces of the Horcruxes – Voldemort’s (RALPH FIENNES) soul that he himself removed from his being and hid in obscure locations, both far and wide. If our heroic trio are unable to locate and destroy them all, Voldemort will remain immortal and become even stronger. Also thrown into the equation – they must perform this task without the guidance of their Hogwarts professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore (MICHAEL GAMBON); plus a combination of dark forces, romantic tensions and long-held secrets threaten their friendship while on the quest. Meanwhile, the long-feared war is underway and Voldemort’s Death Eaters seize control of the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts, terrorising and arresting anyone who opposes them as they search for the one thing most valuable to Voldemort – our Harry, whose only hope is to find the Horcruxes before Voldemort’s servants find him. As he searches for clues, Harry uncovers an old and almost forgotten tale – the legend of the Deathly Hallows – and, if the legend turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he so desperately seeks. But what Harry doesn’t know is that his future has already been mapped out by his past when, on that fateful day, he became “The Boy Who Lived”. No longer just a boy, Harry is drawing ever closer to the task for which he has been preparing since the first day he stepped into Hogwarts: the ultimate showdown with Voldemort. There were hopes the film would be released in 3D but the makers could not deliver the finished article in time for its 19 November release date. A delay would have meant missing the build-up to Thanksgiving Day in the States – one of the biggest box office money-spinning periods of the year. Also stars HELENA BONHAM CARTER, ROBBIE COLTRANE, TOM FELTON, JOHN HURT, ALAN RICKMAN, BILL NIGHY, MIRANDA RICH18ARDSON, TIMOTHY SPALL and MAGGIE SMITH.

dose of painful prangs from JOHNNY KNOxVILLE, STEVE-O, BAM MARGERA, CHRIS PONTIUS and the rest of their loony crew. On the first weekend of its US release last month it conquered the box office chart, bagging $50 million in the process.

Rom-com… a recently divorced guy (JOHN C. RILEY) meets the woman of his dreams (MARISA TOMEI). Unfortunately, she comes with extra baggage: a protective and quite dependent 21-year-old son (JONAH HILL), who goes to enormous lengths to prevent his mother from getting into a serious relationship.

Dark comedy… a young newspaper writer returns to her hometown in the English countryside and the once ugly duckling causes quite a stir among the village’s male population. GEMMA ARTERTON, BEN SERGEANT, DOMINIC COOPER, LUKE EVANS.getting into a serious relationship.

TAKE ONE • Pirates of the Caribbean update: MONICA CRUZ, younger sister of PENELOPE, has been drafted in for distance shots as big sis is over five months pregnant. The 33-year-old sibling is well known in her native Spain but has failed to make a mark in Hollywood as her English is not very good. Also back on board is KEITH RICHARD as Teague Sparrow, father of Captain Jack, who made a brief appearance in the last film • The cast of the excellent TV show Inbetweeners have just finished shooting the movie in Greece. The plot: having left school, the clueless foursome of Will (SIMON BIRD), Simon (JOE THOMAS), Jay (JAMES BUCKLEY) and Neil (BLAKE HARRISON) go on their first ever lads’ holiday to, as Jay puts it, the “clunge capital of Europe”. It’s bound to end in disaster – if you didn’t already know, the recent TV series was the last. • Work starts this month on the new Muppets movie. JASON SEGEL and his girlfriend, hot redhead AMY ADAMS, go to LA to try to get The Muppets back on air for a reunion show to save a struggling movie studio. CHRIS COOPER (American Beauty) will portray The Muppet-hating villain, who wants to buy the movie studio to dig 20 for oil underneath the lot.

• The Twilight Saga update: cameras start rolling this month on Breaking Dawn Part 1. The plot: the Cullen clan get some new allies in the battle against the Volturi in the shape of the Denali family who, like the Cullens, do not feed on humans. MIA MAESTRO (Frida) and CHRISTIAN CAMARGO (The Hurt Locker) portray the parents, while MAGGIE GRACE (Knight and Day), CASEY LaBOW (CSI New York) and MyANNA BURING (Grindhouse) will play their daughters and the latter is a rival to Bella (KRISTEN STEWART). Also on their side will be rising young actor RAMI MALEK (The Pacific and 24) as a member of an Egyptian vampire coven who has the ability to control the elements: air, water, fire and earth. Also, 10-year-old MACKENZIE FOY has a central role as Edward (ROBERT PATTINSON) and Bella’s vampire/human love child, and beefcake TAYLOR LAUTNER is back as werewolf Jacob. • MARTIN FREEMAN, who recently landed the role of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, has just finished filming Animals with Spanish director MARCAL FORES in Barcelona. He plays a secondary school teacher who has been described as a mix between Donnie Darko and Gus Van Sant. ALL INFORMATION ON THESE PAGES WAS CORRECT AT THE TIME OF GOING TO PRESS.

A possible mega big screen franchise to look out for is The Dark Tower – a series of books written by STEPHEN KING which he penned over a 22-year period. The Dark Tower is the ace author’s “magnum opus” of seven bestselling novels with, to date, more than 30 million copies sold in 40 countries. The books incorporate themes from multiple genres including fantasy, science fiction, horror and adventure. After the series was completed, a prequel of comic books based on the main character were published and King recently announced that an eighth book is currently being scribed. The writer identifies The Lord of the Rings, Arthurian Legend, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as inspirations. Everything centres around Roland Deschain, a “gunslinger” who is based on CLINT EASTWOOD’s “Man with No Name” spaghetti western character, and the films will focus on his quest to reach the tower. J.J. ABRAMS is considering the producer’s role but King has already drafted in the services of RON HOWARD in the director’s chair and these two want the main characters to be played by the leading figures from the Twilight series cast. The first film will be followed by a TV series which will lead to the second film; and then at least two TV seasons will precede the final film in the trilogy, where “the man in black” finally reaches his destination. If they do get the actors on their wish list, production will be held up as the Twilight series starts simultaneous filming this month on Breaking Dawn Part 1 and 2 which will not wrap up until next autumn. King hopes this will be as successful as The Lord of the Rings trilogy which, as mentioned earlier, was a major influence when he wrote the books; and, with Universal Pictures on board, money should be no object. With such prestigious names and backing behind it, The Dark Tower has the potential to become one of the biggest franchises in cinematic history.

22 NOVEMBER BATTLE OF THE BANDS Monday 22 November is an important date on the music calendar as some of the industry’s big names square up with the release of their new albums. Super Monday, as it has already been dubbed, is being compared to Monday 11 September 1995 when the then top two, OASIS and BLUR, battled it out for the number one spot. For those who don’t know, the latter claimed the coveted position at the top of the following weekend’s chart – but it was a close call. The two heavyweights who will step up to the plate this time round are TAKE THAT with their offering Progress and JLS with their second album Outta This World. The former will call on their legion of fans, who are eagerly waiting for this as it sees the return of ROBBIE WILLIAMS; while the modern-day boy band will hope their current popularity gives them top spot in this chart scrap. Both camps will come out fighting the weekend before as the TT plan is to showcase their new single, The Flood, live on the X-Factor, while JLS will no doubt claim a few sales as they are supplying this year’s official Children In Need charity single, Love You More. And, to top it all, there are scheduled releases on 22 November from MICHAEL JACKSON, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, JUSTIN BIEBER, KANYE WEST AND ALESHA DIXON, and the latest Now That’s What I Call Music collection. As for the rest of the month there are releases from CHERYL COLE with Messy Little Raindrops; JAMIROQUAI – Rock Dust Light Star; ROD STEWART – Fly Me To The Moon: The Great American Songbook Volume V; and BON JOVI’s Greatest Hits on 1 November. On 8 November… Safe by WESTLIFE. On 15 November… The Promise by BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN; Loud by RIHANNA; Greatest Hits So Far! by PINK; Merry Christmas II You by MARIAH CAREY; and The Christmas Album by the GLEE CAST. And, finally, Endlessly by DUFFY on 29 November.

One star who uses public transport though is the very hot PIXIE LOTT. The 19-year-old, who has just repackaged her debut album as Turn It Up Louder (containing an extra four tracks plus the recently released single Broken Arrow), caught a London bus into the city and was chatting with fellow passengers. But she won’t be doing that much in the near future as she has just landed a major role in the soon-to-be filmed comedy Sweet Baby Jesus. She plays a pregnant woman named Mary who, along with her boyfriend Joe, travels to Bethlehem, where the villagers assume they are the second coming. SHARON STONE plays her mother. A couple of soul legends passed away last month… GENERAL (NORMAN) JOHNSON, lead singer of CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, who once sang I’m On My Way To A Better Place. The band’s top song was the 1970 classic Give Me Just A Little More Time – a number two in the UK charts, and KYLE MINOGUE’s excellent rendition reached the same spot in 1992. SOLOMON BURKE also passed away recently; he had several big hits during the ‘60s and Cry To Me featured in the film Dirty Dancing. He is survived by 21 children and 90 (yes, 90) grandchildren. MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, who on 31 October were scheduled to be the pre-game entertainment at the NFL match at Wembley Stadium in front of 85,000 spectators, are trying to shake off their “emo” tag. The band are back after a four-year lay-off with a new image and a new album, Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys, which includes the new single Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na). The release date is the dreaded 22 November (see main article).

24

The PIXIES have gone ballistic in Chile: on the evening of the big rescue the band played an emotional gig dedicating a song to each of the 33 trapped miners who had returned to the surface. Apparently CD sales of their music in that country have gone into orbit. One question – who did actually win that Chilean version of Big Brother? LADY GAGA has been challenged to a $1million singing contest by US newcomer ALISA APPS, who has questioned the singer’s abilities saying, “I feel sorry for Lady Gaga; she’s just a plastic doll generated by the music money marketing machine.” Meanwhile, the prestigious Rolling Stone magazine has described GAGA as “a cross between GENE SIMMONS of KISS and My Little Pony”. And the publicity stunts keep coming thick ‘n’ fast. This one just missed this column’s deadline last month – she reckons ANDY WARHOL is sending her messages from beyond the grave and has directed her career. I wonder if he gets in the way of God, who is supposed to tell her when she can go on stage – at one recent gig in New York she didn’t get “the message” until 45 minutes after she was due to take the mike. And she is reportedly recorded a duet with ELTON JOHN for forthcoming Disney film Gnomeo & Juliet. Imagine those two working together – one ego would have to give!

CULTURE & ENTERTAINMENT Life & Living THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE By Stieg larsson

Compiled by Laura Penn

The second novel in Stieg Larsson’s million-selling Millennium Trilogy, this book features many of the characters that appeared in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, including Lisbeth Salander, the “Girl” of the title. She is a social misfit and computer hacker who teams up with Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist and publisher of Millennium magazine, who makes his living exposing the crooked and corrupt practices of the Swedish establishment. When a young journalist named Dag Svensson approaches him with a meticulously researched thesis about sex trafficking in Sweden and the people in high office who abuse underage girls, Blomkvist immediately throws himself into the investigation. Although Blomkvist has had no contact with tattooed Lisbeth Salander since they risked their lives on a terrifying hunt for a serial killer a year earlier (the story of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), unknown to him, she is in constant contact with his computer’s hard drive, which she cloned and is now monitoring from her vast new apartment. Salander is a traumatised survivor of a deranged psychotherapist and armed, with a photographic memory, she is pathologically focused on seeking out and punishing violent misogynists. She is drawn into Blomkvist´s investigation and, spurred on by the appalling case studies of teenage prostitution she finds on Blomkvist’s computer, she attempts to take matters into her own hands. She plots punishment for the traffickers but, before she can carry out her own brand of justice, she is accused of three murders. To escape the police she vanishes and, while the tabloids go wild at the idea of a “psychotic lesbian S&M Satanist” on the run, Blomkvist tries despairingly to clear her name. When he does eventually make contact, it is to discover that Salander is more embroiled in his investigation than he could have thought possible. It turns out that, for Salander, the trail of guilt leads shockingly close to home.

firestarter By stephen king Stephen King´s classic Firestarter is the story of Andrew and Charlie McGee, a fatherdaughter pair on the run from a government agency known as “The Shop”. Years before, as a student, Andy had participated in a Shop experiment dealing with “Lot 6”, a drug with hallucinogenic effects. The drug gave his future wife, Victoria Tomlinson, telepathic abilities, and him a mind-ability he calls “the Push”. Their daughter Charlie developed a frightening pyrokinetic ability, with the full extent of her power unknown. Shop agents kill Vicky and Charlie is taken hostage, but Andy, using the Push, manages to reclaim her and the pair go on the run. They are taken in by a farmer but are tracked down by Shop agents, who attempt to kill Andy. They don’t reckon on Charlie’s powers, which incinerate the entire farm. Once again the pair are on the run. The director of the Shop calls in a hitman to capture the fugitives, and this time the operation is successful, with both being taken and imprisoned separately at the Shop headquarters. With his spirit broken, Andy becomes a drug addict and seemingly loses his power but Charlie defiantly refuses to cooperate, and does not demonstrate her power for six months until a crucial blackout provides a changing point for the two. Andy somehow regains the Push and, by pretending to still be powerless, manages to gain crucial information by “Pushing” his psychiatrist. The dramatic climax of the story comes when the pair are reunited after six months.

Reading Room “Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot. We know no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.” No doubt you have all remembered, remembered bonfire night, so this month we look at a collection of novels about the most intriguing of elements: fire. Now where did I put my sparkler?

FAHRENHEIT 451 By Ray Bradbury A frightening vision of the future when firemen don’t put out fires… they start them! Written by Bradbury during the Cold War years, the story tales place in an unspecified time in the future where America has completely abandoned self-control. This America is filled with lawlessness and anyone caught reading or possessing illegal books is confined to a mental hospital, while the books are burned by the firemen. Firefighter Guy Montag is ransacking the book-filled house of an old woman when he accidentally reads a line in one of her books, “Time has fallen asleep in the afternoon sunshine”, and steals the book. The woman refuses to leave her house and her books, choosing instead to light a match in an act of martyrdom. Scarred by the woman’s suicide, Montag becomes physically ill and calls in for sick leave but at home he argues with his wife, Mildred, over the book he himself has stolen. Over the course of a year he hides dozens of books in the ventilation shafts of his own house, and tries to memorise them to preserve their contents. However, Montag’s books are discovered and he is forced to burn his own home as well as his books. Angry and afraid, Montag turns the flame-thrower on his boss and becomes a fugitive. He flees to the countryside and meets a group of rebel book-lovers and is astonished to find out that they have memorised entire books, preserving them orally until the law against books is overturned. War breaks out and Montag watches helplessly as jet bombers fly overhead and attack the city with nuclear weapons. At the moment of the explosion, the emotion of seeing the city burned causes a key phrase from the Bible to emerge from the depths of Montag’s memory. The final page of the novel shows this phrase to be Revelation 22:2.

Decoration and centrepiece

By Frank D. Matthée

The trend for wedding decoration follows the current interior design trend: lots of powerful colours such as magenta, raspberry, sunny yellow, grass green, lilac, violet and even black, or animal prints like leopard or zebra. As this style is extremely intense the remaining details should be kept very simple. The flowers, for example, should be smaller in size, less dramatic, not a huge mix and with few leaves. Also, the traditional and muchloved table centrepiece is out: therefore, you should arrange the flowers in different glass vases or plain silver vessels to break up the heaviness of one huge centrepiece, and give the table and the venue a bright, airy feel.

TOP TRENDS FOR

2011

Groom attire The modern groom will be wearing a silver suit, starting from cool grey or blue tones, ranging from sky to midnight blue. The most important aspect is always a tailored fit. Don’t forget the accessories: a simple but elegant tie, or more noble cravat, with a pearl or crystal pin and the appropriate cufflinks are ideal. Everything has to match perfectly, in order for the bride and groom to look like a perfect couple.

Homepage In the digital and global world your own wedding website is a must-have. Not only does it serve a practical use to inform all guests, especially ones abroad, and to put all the important details together (schedule, travelling, links to hotels and wedding list) but it also makes the classical invitation look much nicer and its production much easier. You can take the opportunity to tell your guests much more about your own history as a couple, present the testimonials, bridesmaids and ushers, or tease with photos of the location. After the wedding you can display all the photos on your page so that everyone can download them or order via the photographer. There are many online suppliers who offer personalised websites.

WEDDING PLANNER TO THE STARS FRANK D. MATTHéE REVEALS THE MAIN WEDDING TRENDS FOR 2011, AS WELL AS SOME INVALUABLE TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR DREAM WEDDING COME TRUE.

Wedding cake The cake cutting is one of the nicest rituals of a wedding and at the same time one of the most important in western culture. Who has the hand on top? Who is the more dominant partner? And how do the couple work together in daily situations? Everyone loves to see the traditionally funny situation of a bride and groom trying to kiss each other above the cake or feed each other at the same time. Regarding the design of the cake, colour is in trend, and an easy way of achieving this is to pick up the colour with pink or black icing or decoration. If you want to be really stylish go for “bling-bling” on the decoration with small mirrors such as a disco globe or Swarovski crystals.

Bridal dress The bride’s dress is obviously one of the most important aspects of a wedding. Besides having to be suitable and flattering for your body shape, skin colour and hair style, it is essential for you – as the bride – to feel comfortable wearing the dress the whole day, and that it fits perfectly into the style of your wedding. For example, is it a civil ceremony or church service? A chapel or a cathedral? Is your celebration taking place in a castle, a finca, a stylish beach club, an elegant hotel or at the beach? Whatever you decide, the trend for next season is colour. That means the dress could be in extraordinary magenta or expressive black, or just have bold details in these colours, such as ribbons, belts, piping and bows – or accessorise with a striking clutch bag, shoes or gloves. New trends are Audrey Hepburnstyle tea dresses and elegant gowns made out of exclusive lace. For a very hot trend… transparent sleeves or wraps. Making a comeback, and a must for next year, is the flowery, voluminous veil, following the old tradition where the virgin bride was covered till the most romantic moment of the ceremony: the liberating kiss!

Favours Besides saying “Thank you for coming” favours should be a small, unforgettable souvenir of your special day. Apart from the traditional Mediterranean sugar-covered almonds, which you now get in all desired colours (even in silver or gold), you should think about a connected gift (an antihangover kit if you plan to party all night long, or a personalized fan for a wedding in Spain), or a favour that the guests can keep for a life-time. Some charming ideas are engraved champagne glasses, engraved silver-plated key rings, or embroidered silk scarves or napkins. Just use your initials, date and city, or even design your own logo. That makes every favour very personal and memorable.

Photography

A new trend replacing the old-fashioned and expensive disposable cameras on the table is the photo booth. You choose one corner with a nice background, put a camera on a tripod with automatic release via remote control and, very importantly, offer a few accessories. These should be funny accessories such as confetti, feather boas, sparklers, make-up, or matching the concept of the wedding (like snapper for a wedding in Spain, masks for a Venetian-style wedding or a helmet for a medieval theme). Think about placing the set in a separate room if you want to be surprised by the photos, or even in the main room where the reception takes place, as it will be a funny side event for the other guests to watch. These photos are a great memory and really add to the atmosphere of the party.

Catering Instead of the regular menu or buffet I would recommend two new alternatives that are much nicer because the guests do not have to stand up and leave their table. Serve a table buffet with different dishes and side orders on big plates, just like Italian families do. The guests can choose between a variety of dishes but have to serve themselves – which makes for a very sociable dining experience. The other option is to use small French “Etagères” for all courses, with a variety of dishes to choose from. Each portion should be smaller than a regular first or main course as you want the guests to try from all the different dishes. This way of serving allows you to combine different cuisines, such as English, French, Spanish or Asian, and thus meet all the different tastes of your guests. 31

Entertainment New in entertainment is the integration and participation of the guests. A show or background music only amuses and entertains guests, but it is better to stimulate the conversation and affect people in a really personal way. Therefore the new entertainment trend comes with a condition: the guests have to be part of the action! So organise an astounding magician for close-up tricks from table to table, or engage an entertaining cartoonist to draw funny pictures, or surprise your guests with a drumming lesson where they can try different percussion instruments. It breaks the ice so that people enjoy celebrating the night away together.

Invitation

How to make your dream wedding come true by wedding planner to the stars Frank D. Matthée

The trick is in the details

The first contact your guests will have with your wedding is the invitation, so please make an effort to send a really beautiful and individual one reflecting the style of the wedding and containing all necessary information. You don’t want a flow of guests calling or emailing you to asking for details you forgot to include. You just want them to look forward to being a part of your celebration. When it comes to entertainment always try to book live music as this opens your heart, causes goose bumps and will emphasise all the special moments. Of course, there is always the matter of budget but ask friends or music schools – they love to play at weddings.

Think outside the box! Why not send a little video on DVD to invite your guests? You can replay your proposal or your decision to get married, or show off your wonderful wedding venue. Or make them curious with a small souvenir box baring details of your unique love story – from the business card of the restaurant where your first date took place to the label of the champagne bottle with which you celebrated your engagement. This will not only surprise your invitees but will give you and your partner pleasure in going through old souvenirs and mementos preparing it. This is a really particular way of telling those closest to your heart that you would appreciate their acceptance.

Tend to your guests Getting started

Photo: r2arte.com

My basic advice for planning a successful and therefore happy and unforgettable wedding, which sounds so simple that most of the couples don’t even think about it, is early and open communication between bride and groom and sometimes also the parents – depending on who pays for the wedding. It is important to speak about the different expectations right from the beginning so that the process of planning the wedding doesn’t head in the wrong direction. Put all questions you have in mind on the table. You should fix the budget you are able or would like to spend, and define what should take place, the number of guests, the style of the wedding and, last but not least, what you aim to achieve with your “one and only day”. It might be an informal family party, or a formal dinner. You might want to celebrate with all your friends from around the world and, if you have to fulfil society’s expectations, you want to set a new standard – to impress your “class” and business partners.

Write a wish list

Write down a list of all your wishes and requirements and roughly calculate the necessary budget so you won’t be surprised when receiving quotes from the suppliers. Generally send out a minimum of three enquiries and then compare them. After researching online meet all service providers in person to check if they meet your expectations and if you have a good feeling about them. Finally, remember that your very special and personal event will only succeed if all people involved match harmoniously; it is a complex team-playing process.

Realise your dream

Concerning the conception of the theme of your wedding, please do follow your dreams and remain brave when trying to actualize your own ideas and not those from friends and external sources. Only then will it become YOUR unique and memorable day, which all your guests will speak of forever more.

32

Regarding the catering, less is more. These days, thank God, people have enough to eat and are not coming to your wedding starving. I often see that lots of food has to be thrown away and for two reasons that cannot be recommended: your social conscience and your budget. What is more important is the disposition of the F&B throughout the day. Your guests have to be looked after perfectly the whole day with some canapés, little finger food, sweet and hearty meals… and don’t forget to have enough water in the hot summer months or when waiting after church during your formal photography session.

Timing is everything

My last tip is an essential one regarding the agenda of the day. Don’t overwhelm your guests and yourselves with too much action and programme. Think about splitting the civil service and the church service or free ceremony over two days, depending on the number of guests and the venue possibilities. Try to imagine that you, as a bridal couple, will be in a rush that day, that your own individual perception of time is very fast and that you want to enjoy it fully and not be stressed. The day only has 18 hours approximately, so how many minutes do you have to chat with every guest in between the official photos, the traditional rituals and the dancing. Don’t push yourselves, and give your guests some time to arrive, to acclimatise and to rest. The more free and unhurried they feel the better the atmosphere will be and the party will become. On the other hand, plan enough entertainment so that nobody becomes bored. The right amount of animation lies, as all things, in the middle.

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride...

by Sarah Hughes

This age old saying conjures up images of the stereotypical spinster, hanging around in the background in an unflattering balloon of a dress, watching yet another dear friend of hers bag the man of her dreams – while she stands by and holds her trail. Not any more! The role of bridesmaid has never been more enjoyable as it is right now. Not only do they get to enjoy all the fun of the wedding day without all the stress of organising it but, following the most recent trends, they will also finally be able to get to choose what they wear on the big day. In past years every bridesmaid would wear one style and colour of dress that the bride decided upon, and there really was no easy way for a bridesmaid to let her know the bride’s choice was neither fashionable nor flattering. Autumn 2010 has brought about a new approach for bridesmaid attire, which allows the bridesmaid not only a say in what they wear but the option to actually choose the dress. The bride will simply give her choice in colour and then let the bridesmaids decide what suits them best and find an off the rack dress of any designer. This works not only in favour of the bridesmaids but also the bride herself as it removes yet another stressful duty from her already huge list of jobs to do. One important thing to consider if you are going to follow this trend for your wedding is to always let the bridesmaids know the level of formality of the wedding; you don’t want one bridesmaid wearing something resembling a sundress and another in a heavy ball gown. If you’re the lucky bridesmaid then make sure you make the most of it and choose something you love and will be happy to wear again. Another trend that has hit weddings this year is colour, so expect to see some bold options for bridesmaid dresses, along with some jewel-encrusted detailing. If you want to keep on trend but still prefer a more traditional choice in colour for the dress than try opting for bold autumnal colours in the bridesmaids’ accessories instead, with these pieces from Aye Do.

What kind of bride are you?

This dynamic bouquet is made up of green cymbidium orchids and aspidistra leaves. The bouquet was made up for a bride who supplied a picture she had seen in a magazine. The wedding couple were architects from Belgium and had strong style ideas. The bride wore a shorter-style white sleeveless dress with a black sash around the waist. The flowers for the reception and wedding were all lime green with black and a little white. Green curcumas were positioned on top of two matt black, 1.5 metre tall columns framing where the couple were married. The arrangements for the reception tables were bulbous matt black bowls made up with a carpet of green shamrock blooms, with white calla lillies and black bear grass sprouting from the centre. Little green button chrysanthemum heads were placed on each napkin for a finishing touch.

By Joanna Walton

Traditional Today’s brides are inundated with choice when it comes to their special day. From themes to favours, catering to table decorations, the sheer volume of choice can become slightly overwhelming. With over 20 years experience in international floral design, Joanna Walton guides us through the different styles that can be achieved by merely letting your favourite flower lead the way...

Modern This is a cluster bride’s bouquet made up of avalanche roses and a few sprigs of lavender and rosemary. This is a modern take on a classic design and has been a popular choice for brides in recent years. The roses are tightly tied together and bound with ribbon from an offcut of the bride’s dress. This is a suitable bouquet for a tall, slim bride who can carry off the round style. This particular bouquet was made up for an English bride who had chosen traditional English country flowers for the church and also the marquee, including tall white delphiniums, white scabious, mauve campanulas, lavender, eucalyptus and rosemary. To bring a touch of the surroundings from Mallorca we used a lot of olive foliage, and tall olive trees were positioned either side of the door to the chapel, tied with white voile ribbon.

Patriotic This bride was from South Africa and married an Englishman here in Mallorca. The bouquet was made up of proteas, which are the national flower in her home country. The bouquet was a complete contrast to the rest of the flowers used for the wedPhotography: ding and reception, and Joanna Walton was an extremely personal choice. The varying shades of the proteas beautifully complimented her dress and, even though loved ones could not be with her for her memorable day, she carried a touch of her homeland with her.

My advice to brides who are beginning to think of flowers for their special day is to look at magazines, internet pictures and the surroundings of where the wedding will take place. If you find pictures of the style of flowers that you like but not in the right colours – or colours that you like but in flowers that would be unavailable at that time of year – show them to your florist so you know you are on the same wavelength. It is easier to do this visually. Some flowers are seasonal, although most flowers can now be sourced in Holland, imported from other parts of the world. It is very important to check the availability before you set your heart on a flower that may simply not be obtainable at the time of your wedding.

AND WHAT SORT OF BRIDE AM I? For our wedding blessing at a beautiful private chapel in Son Serra de Marina, a couple of years ago, I carried a bunch of calla lilies, tied together with bear grass; my daughter held a bunch of variegated white and green curcumas, tied with hosta leaves; and the bridesmaids carried moss baskets of sunflowers – a complete mix of my favourite flowers!

Hot Tip from Frank! Think of regional and seasonal flowers to reduce the costs. Don’t use too much variety or colours; leave it elegant. Don’t forget that the handicraft produces the costs, not the flowers themselves. Best money-saver: check the double use. For example, use the church decoration for the buffet table, or high table flowers from the reception for lounge tables in the evening.

46

This bouquet was made up of velvety white calla lillies, sweet peas, freesia and eucalyptus in a traditional heart-shaped bouquet. The flowers were all personal favourites of the bride’s and the bouquet had a gorgeous fragrance. These flowers are seasonal and quite soft and would only be suitable in cooler climes. The bride wore a traditional gown and calla lillies in her hair. There were also calla lillies positioned at the end of each pew of the chapel.

Choosing flowers for your

wedding venue by Joanna Walton

Photography: fragmentphotography.co.uk

When thinking about flowers for the church and reception it is best to visit the venues, preferably with your florist, and look at the environment, the colours that are there, the general ambience and the places where it would look to good to put the flowers. As with choosing your bouquet, it is important to take into consideration the time of year and the availability of the flowers you like. I had the pleasure of decorating the temple at Son Morraig this summer for a couple who had their blessing there at 6.30 in the evening, and drinks were served afterwards so that they could watch the sunset with their guests. It really was a stunning location and we chose blue and white flowers to compliment the white marble and the blue of the sea it overlooks. Son Morraig is one of the properties that Archduke Ludwig Salvatore of Austria (1847-1915) bought after falling in love with the scenery of the north coast of Mallorca. Son Morraig is in the municipality of Deià, and in the house there is a museum exhibiting objects and mementoes of Ludwig Salvatore, a collection of ceramics and Mallorcan paintings of the 19th century. The chapel is only for hire after the museum has closed at 5pm. As this location is simply stunning on its own, with the backdrop of the sea and the hills around it, it would have been a mistake to over-dress the temple. Where there are pillars at a location we often swirl garlands around them, but in this instance it was not needed. We placed two large front-facing arrangements of blue bee delphiniums, white lilies and blue hydrangeas with trailing foliages on the steps of the temple, and a matching smaller arrangement in the central plinth. Simple trailing garlands of olive foliage and rosemary with small bows of blue raffia were attached to the railings. The whole thing came together with the blue bows placed on the white fabric-covered chairs. A white carpet was rolled out and we then scattered blue hydrangea florets down the isle. The blue and white theme for the flowers was then carried on back at the reception – at L’Avenida Hotel in Sollèr. White lillies, blue bee delphiniums and blue hydrangeas were placed in the larger vases and heads of blue hydrangeas in circular vases for the tables. The place name holders were made of shells. For the finishing touch blue hydrangea florets were then scattered on the tables.

Hot Tip from Frank! Have a look at different venues and do not decide too fast from first impressions. Double-check with a second spontaneous visit. Ask if you could have a sneak at a real event (reality proof). Check furniture, table linen, dinnerware and cutlery, technical equipment (sound and light) and the dance floor. Do a tasting of the food and beverages. Speak about all costs that could be incurred and negotiate the whole package, especially if accommodation is included. Photography: Joanna Walton

A DAY TO REMEMBER By Barrie Suart

wedding speciAl LIFE & LIVING

Musings on Marriage For beaming couples, The Big Day is a cherished occasion when they are the centre of attention. Or should be if, for example, the tired and emotional brother of the bride remains fully-clothed; free-spirited Aunt Augusta resists the temptation to pole-dance on one of the restaurant’s ceiling supports; and a boorish chap claiming to be long-lost, far-removed cousin Willen Meway from Auckland doesn’t guzzle the complimentary whisky and commandeer the microphone. For guests it will be a time to share the couple’s happiness and enjoy the celebrations – but things don’t always go as well as planned. Here, four of our contributors take a light-hearted look at the joys and tribulations of weddings – and marriage.

Hot Tip from Frank! I am no psychologist but from my hundreds of meetings with happy couples I have learnt what could be a recipe for happiness beyond the honeymoon: respect, humour, active communication from both sides, listening, asking the partner for his/her desires and dreams and building up your own story and habits to believing in your relationship and your love and solving misunderstandings as soon as possible, and at least before you go to sleep.

LIVE AND LET LIVE By Vicki McLeod I’m hoping I will only be married once, although I wouldn’t mind repeating my actual wedding. We had a fantastic, unforgettable, incredible party. There were some people missing from our day, but on the whole the most important people in our lives were there to share it with us. I was pregnant when we were married, and barely six months later we went from “newlyweds” to “family” status. It all moved quite fast. I checked in with some of my Facebook friends, and they had a very similar experience: the first year of marriage is turmoil – lovely, insane turmoil. I dislike the expectations that marriage brings with it, and I don’t like the way

that some people become 50 per cent of something, rather than 100 per cent of themselves. I am fortunate that I married a bloke who doesn’t operate in that way; that might be why we got married. We don’t have the traditional roles of husband and wife in our marriage; we both cook and manage the finances, and we both care for our little girl and try to give some time off from each other. The advice I have is to try to live and let live. No one is perfect. Try to be patient and kind, although that’s not always easy. Marry someone who matches you intellectually, and whom you can argue with, support and love, without needing to immediately get the same thing back. Don’t marry to make up for a lack in

your own life. Don’t play a game with a score: someone will always lose. Try to get on with your spouse’s family, and (in some cases) children. And, if you can’t, well keep trying: you married them too. There is truth in the saying, “Marry in haste, repent at leisure.” Be sure: it is a lifelong commitment.

DRAMA QUEENS AND MOTHERS-IN-LAw By Di Foden Honestly, I don’t know whether I’m the right person to write about weddings. Twice down the aisle – well, up the steps of the registry office actually, because I don’t do religion – and on neither occasion did I manage to seal the deal properly. First lesson: a wedding does not guarantee a marriage. Number one wedding came after many years of living together and two children. I must admit my mother was relieved; apparently the shame I heaped on her head (I lived in sin; It was the ‘60s) meant she could no longer look the neighbours in the eye, and had to slink to the butchers in a burkha for her neck of lamb. Bit of a drama queen, my mum. And she and my number one husband roundly loathed each other. Second lesson: get the mother-in law onside. Anyway, the wedding was quite nice. I wore a red dress with a black bolero, and a very Jackie O black pillbox hat. You might guess from this that I’m not a fluffy meringue sort of dresser. I do smart. We had a great meal and stayed the night at the Adelphi, Liverpool’s poshest hotel at the time. They did a reality show there years later; it’s gone down a bit since my day. But then, haven’t we all. That husband eventually disappeared. It was quite difficult divorcing an invisible man, but by then I had met number two and another wedding was required. This time, we wore matching black dinner suits with white shirts and red bow ties. And trilbies. My new mother-in-law was very bothered that I’d wear a red hat to match the tie; apparently that would have marked me down as a scarlet woman for the rest of my days. Another drama queen. See second lesson. By the way, number two dumped me for a younger model (see first lesson). That wedding, including outfits, butties at the pub after, and an all-day running buffet back at the house, cost me less than £200. Eeh, when I were a lad… I’m now glad I didn’t spend much more on it. Which leads me to the third lesson. You don’t need to spend a fortune to have a good do. As has just been proven by my lovely daughter who married her long-term partner this autumn in the most fun wedding I have ever attended. Dresses from the high street for her and the daughters, reception done by the local catering college, table decorations hand-made from oyster shells off the beach, drinks from a booze cruise, Mercedes bridal car courtesy of brother, and an English cheese wedding cake (pretty and half the price of a traditional one). Job done. And this mother-in-law was completely onside.

The passage of the years has only reinforced my observation that, of the three memorable religious ceremonies that most of us experience, marriage is the one most likely to cause trouble. While christenings and funerals tend to be occasions of quiet contemplation and unity, marriages are often unexpectedly disruptive. Not only are rifts driven between members of the same family but also a lasting enmity is generated between the two clans involved. The first tremours of uncertainty are felt as early as the assembly of the witnesses. Why are there so many more people in the bride’s pews and so few behind the groom? (They must have recruited members of the passing public to swell their ranks. And look at the way they’re dressed: how could he come in a leather anorak?) One side looks down its collective nose; the other is raucous and regularly pops out for a fag in the graveyard. (For sure, they will have brought presents of very low value.) And lo, it is thus. It’s at the reception that the storm gathers strength, for the groom’s Aunt Mavis has quietly swopped the gift card from the mother of the bride’s 112-piece solid silver canteen of cutlery for her own offering of a cracked Staffordshire pot spaniel; clearly recycled from a previous wedding. By this time the best man is evidently under the influence, has shed his coat, tie and shoes, and has lost his speech. Driven to improvisation, he recounts the groom’s postrugby sexual escapades, with which his bride and new mother-in-law are clearly unfamiliar. Resentment is building at a furious pace. And who seated Aunt Hilda next to her sister? They haven’t spoken for 22 years. The photographer has taken a shine to the bride’s sister and, instead of arranging the occupants of the head table for a group photo, is re-arranging the chief bridesmaid’s Honiton lace dress in the cloakroom The arrival of the disc jockey provides welcome relief, for his over-amplified din drowns the bickering now generally abroad. The tipsy bride’s father takes the floor with his daughter, while his cold-sober wife quietly takes herself to bed to review the wreckage of the day and ponder the faults of her newfound relatives. Maybe it will be better next time.

DANCING IN THE DARk By Laura Penn Weddings are special days… the greatest day of your life for most people, and so they should be. Declaring your love for someone in public is a brave and noble thing to do. It is also terrifying! On the morning of my wedding I drank a bottle of Rescue Remedy and still couldn’t stop shaking. I had never met many of my husband’s more distant relatives so when I walked into the venue I thought I was at the wrong wedding. Halfway through the ceremony I started to relax and enjoy myself. As the day went on my new husband also began to relax with the help of copious amounts of red wine. Through rather bad planning we got married on the opening day of the Premier League season, at 3pm. Most of the male guests mysteriously disappeared for 90 minutes and came back slightly merry, in time for the reception. Actually, most of them returned and went to the WRONG reception! There were two weddings taking place at the same venue that day and, when some of our guests began to tuck into the other wedding’s sausage rolls and quiche, there was nearly a fight. But then, a good fight is all part of the wedding tradition in Liverpool! As the celebrations continued someone left a tap running in the gents’ toilets upstairs and water began pouring through the ceiling onto the dance floor. The disco desk almost blew up and the lights fused, leaving everywhere in soggy, silent darkness halfway through Bruce Springsteen’s Dancing in the Dark. (Well, it may have been Agado but that’s not as amusing.) It was then that someone pointed out that the groom was missing. After a search (during which one of the search party fell into the ornamental lake), he was discovered sound asleep in the back of a car. No one could wake him and the couple that owned the car wanted to leave so they drove us to the hotel. I poured him into bed and sat on the floor of the bridal suite taking 32 grips out of my hair and drinking a pot of tea. Not exactly the night of passion that tradition dictates. Trust me, I couldn’t make this up, and if you think that all sounds like a Peter Kaye comedy sketch… well, he may have been inspired by the day as he was one of the guests of honour.

Matching styles This is one of my favourites from a wedding I shot last year. Georgette and Jorge were married in a Pollença old town last summer. It was a warm late afternoon as the assembled family and friends cheered the newlyweds out of the chapel, into the shaded plaza. The couple led their guests in an unhurried zig-zag through the warren of narrow cobbled streets en route to the snug restaurant to toast their futures. I encouraged Georgette and Jorge to drop back from the procession, and we spent half an hour using some of the wonderful little corners and backdrops for a series of portraits. It is always important to try to match the photography style to the style of the couple; while many will opt for the more traditional formal portraits, I knew this would be right for these two. I’m relieved to say I was right. They love it. Tel. (+34) 630 607 954

A happy mood To me every bride looks beautiful on their wedding day and it was extremely difficult to choose a favourite from the thousands of images I have on file, as I have been photographing weddings here on Mallorca for more than 10 years. It was a virtually impossible task as there are so many that fall within the category “favourite wedding photograph”. The one I eventually chose is recent and was taken in summer this year on Alcudia beach. It was an interesting wedding in many ways, as the wedding party consisted of only three people: the bride, the groom and their young daughter. As the happy couple were Hungarian and spoke virtually no English and no Spanish, all communication between us had to be made through a translator. My aim, as with all my wedding commissions, is to capture the mood of happiness on this very special day and I think this is reflected perfectly in this shot, as Anett looks so relaxed, happy and enjoying the moment. The soft light from the late afternoon sun on her left side and a burst of fill-in flash gave me the shot I was looking for. We were all very pleased with the results. Tel. Most important: the sympathy between you and the photographer. If you don’t like him/her, you won’t open up for the photos and they will not get the best shots of you. He/she has to be very energetic and motivated to capture all the beautiful emotions, and at the same time modest and not too extrovert to blend into the background – so you and your guests will forget he’s there… the perfect conditions for making brilliant photos.

Pablo was at the wedding with his Mum and Dad; it was his Aunt Kirsten’s wedding to Mike, to be exact, but he decided to keep a low profile. I really love this picture that I took in Ireland as it was a lovely sunny day in Kerry and the wedding reception was therefore, for the most part, held outdoors, something not so ordinary in Ireland. Everybody was milling around, chatting, drinking and smoking. The kids were running around, except for this one guy who had decided it was safer to hang out with his Ma. He was not bothering anyone and when I spotted him I got down to his level and took his picture. He was a little curious as to why I would want to do this so I took one more and left him to his security. Though it is not a picture of amazing technical detail or quality – this being a scan of a small print to boot – it is a moment frozen in time that would have gone unremembered rather than forgotten. For this reason it is a precious wedding photograph for me, and Kirsten and Mike specifically chose this one to print and hang in their hallway.

10 Beauty

“I forDo’s” the big day 1

Whether you’re the blushing bride, the proud mother of the groom or simply a wedding guest with a wish to look fabulous, we all want to look our best at weddings. With help from beauty experts Maxine and Tracy from the Tranquillity Spa in Santa Ponça Country Club we’ve put together a few beauty tips to ensure you look flawless on the day. You’ll thank us in years to come when you’re leafing through the wedding album…

Softly does it

Fussy up do’s that involve spraying and backcombing your hair within an inch of its life are now thankfully a thing of the past. Take a leaf out of the modern-day bride’s book and ditch the spray can for a much more natural look with long, loose unstructured waves. For styling and texture without a structured feel I recommend label.m’s Sea Salt Spray applied throughout wavy hair to define the curls and give a modern matt finish. If you feel that hippy waves should have been left in the ‘60s then opt for a stylish half-up do, again keeping it soft with loose curls.

2

Banish blemishes

Wedding can be a source of huge stress and the last thing you want is a pre-wedding breakout. Play it safe and have a good on the spot treatment and concealer at the ready, just in case a spot appears overnight. Any spot treatment containing salicylic acid will do the trick; try Clinique’s Anti Blemish Gel, which can be worn underneath make-up.

3

polished

Bat those lashes

Hot Tip from Frank! Very important tip for a beauty treatment: if you want to have a facial you should do so at least one week before as the skin needs some time to rest afterwards. Otherwise, you will suffer from irritations, e.g. red skin or pimples. Don’t forget the pedicure if you wear peep toes or sandals, and do the make-up trial two months before to allow time for changes.

False eyelashes have become increasingly popular over the years. However, whilst the effect on the day may be great, the aftermath is dry, flaky eyelashes that start to shed. To avoid this on the honeymoon Maxine recommends M2LASHES eyelash activating serum, which enhances your natural eyelashes. Simply apply the serum every night and start to see the effects after four to six applications.

If you’re the bride your nails should be beautifully manicured, but subtle in colour. Choose a light polish in a neutral or pink shade, such as OPI’s nail polish in Fair Dinkum Pinkum, so your nails shine but don’t steal the show. If you want a longer-lasting effect, Tracy recommends Shelac gel nail polish, which lasts for 1014 days and doesn’t chip or flake like usual polish.

6

Instant radiance

For an instant boost in radiance you can’t beat Beauty Flash Balm by Clarins; it also keeps your make-up looking fresher for longer. If you hurry you might be able to get your hands on one of the limited editions decorated with Swarovski crystals. Maxine recommends Arbonne’s Make-Up Primer to give your skin a smooth matte finish before applying make-up. A spritz of Dermalogica’s Multi-Active Toner will soothe, purify and condition your skin, helping to keep it hydrated throughout the day.

Cry baby Nobody wants their tears of joy to result in them spending the rest of the day looking like a swamp monster so invest in reliable waterproof mascara. Benefit’s Bad Gal Mascara keeps your lashes looking lovely no matter how many tears you shed. Look for products that will last the distance, opting for a lighter shade in eye make-up rather than a dark, smoky look which will result in panda eyes before the cake has even been cut. And don’t forget your tissues!

7

Arm candy

Make sure the man in your life looks his best with Elemis Total Men’s Grooming Kit, containing products to cleanse, shave and moisturise. Tracy recommends the ice cool shaving foam in particular. If he’s worried about hair loss, suggest Regaine to help strengthen hair and promote future growth.

8 Say cheese!

If your teeth are not quite as pearly white as you’d like, invest in Crest whitening strips before the big day. Hailed by some as being more effective than a professional treatment it promises to get your teeth up to four shades whiter with regular use, so you’ll be ready for your close-up.

9 Follow the stars

If the pre-wedding jitters keep you awake the night before or if you just need a little boost Maxine recommend’s Eyesential Under Eye Enhancer to temporarily lift and tighten the skin around your eyes, reducing lines and puffiness. Apparently this has been in celebrity make-up artists’ bag of tricks for years and, having seen the results in person, I have to say the product really does seem to work! Simply apply, keep your face still for two minutes (that means no laughing!) and enjoy the results for up to 12 hours.

10

Glowing bride Nowadays it’s not unusual for the whole wedding party to indulge in a bit of pre-wedding tanning. For a perfectly natural looking tan the Tranquillity Spa use Nouvatan products, which will keep you glowing for up to a week.

MERCEDES

MAYBACH Business-friendly luxury for power-nappers

by Mark McCafferty

It has always been common opinion that motoring and sleeping are not a match made in heaven. Apart from the probably fatal implications of falling asleep while driving, falling asleep whilst being driven is not exactly a walk in the park either. We’ve all become amateur contortionists at some point in an attempt to catch 10 minutes sleep in the back of the car, most of the time unsuccessfully. However, the new Maybach 62 has succeeded where all else has failed, by creating a car that is probably more comfortable to sleep in than your bedroom. One key component of a successful power nap that is lacking with the traditional saloons is… space. With this in mind, Maybach have created two new marques – the 57 and the 62. The numbers refer to their length (oddly in decimetres), measuring in at 570cm and 620cm, respectively. To put this in perspective, the 57 is still half a metre longer than the once top trump in the saloon industry: Mercedes S-Class. The Maybach is the longest luxury saloon on the market, which was a key thought in creating a car specifically designed to make sleeping more comfortable. The next component needed for ultimate slumber is noise reduction. This is another sector the Maybach excels at. Travel at speeds over 160mph in the Maybach and you will believe you are still on your drive. No other luxury car even comes close to this level of silence. When you combine this with the option of controlling the lighting levels (there over 20 individual lights in the interior), sleep should really not be hard to come by. Then there is the seating. Each seat will cost you more than a Smart Car, and is designed based on the ergonomics used in space shuttles. Each one is hand-stitched with the

66

finest leather and at the touch of a button is transformed into a bed. If that wasn’t enough, it will also cool, heat and massage its hard-toplease occupant. On the odd occasion that you will not be lulled to sleep by your Maybach, there are a variety of entertainment options at your fingertips. Why not have a cigar from the portable humidor, catch up on the golf on your TV screen, or send an email or check the stock market online? The extravagance does not end there: additional options include a partition between you and the chauffeur or even a translucent liquid crystal sunroof that becomes transparent when charged with an electrical current.

There is no mistaking it – being a passenger in the Maybach is a fairly opulent experience. However, the Maybach can look a little less appealing from other angles. First and foremost, the Maybach is ugly. Reminiscent of a humpback whale it is long and bulky; the giant ugly step-sister of the Mercedes S-Class. Then there is the drivability. If you intend to personally drive your Maybach you will find the experience a lot less luxurious.

67

PRESTIGE MOTORING Life & Living There have not been any noticeable developments on the S-Class in terms of drive controls and, due to its sheer size, it is cumbersome and stubborn on steering. It is also very, very heavy; weighing the equivalent of two C-Class Mercedes. The price is not too appealing either. The 57 is over €175,000 more than the flagship S-600 without really offering any real improvements in aesthetics or drivability. The 62 will cost its owner close to €300,000. The Maybach may be heavy, but it is anything but sluggish. Loaded with a twin-turbo V12 (currently the most powerful production engine in the world) and over 550 bhp, this giant can certainly move. It’s clear what demographic is being targeted here for the 57 and the 62. According to Maybach themselves, the typical customer will be capitalising around €45 million. For these customers, the Maybach will improve on their working life, allowing the owner to continue working, rest or relax in between meetings. That €300,000 then becomes money well spent. However, although there have been thousands upon thousands spent on creating this lavish interior, the Maybach seems to lack subtlety. It is too large and bulky to be refined and aerodynamic like the comparative bargain of the S-600. Maybach have succeeded in creating the ultimate in luxury for its passengers. As a result, it is almost as if all other aspects of either the 57 or 62 have been neglected. The exterior styling has suffered and, from the driver’s perspective, the Maybach can be tiresome to manoeuvre. However, in this instance these potential problems are probably not of the owner’s concern, as they’ll be enjoying a brief massage and a Montecristo in the back. Verdict: The ultimate in opulence and business-friendly motoring. But for €300,000 you’d expect the chauffeur to be included.

SUPER SOUPS… AND SEASONAL VEGETABLES

Another neglected vegetable is the aubergine (eggplant) or berenjena in Spanish, perhaps because recipes state they have to be left in salt for half an hour or so to remove the bitter taste. But nowadays eggplants are so fresh that this process is not necessary. Just look for the ones that are heavy for their size with a smooth, shiny skin and no blemishes. Wrinkled, loose skin is an indication of age and thus the fruit will be more bitter. Smaller aubergines have fewer seeds and thinner skin, and tend to be sweeter, more tender and less bitter. Press your finger lightly against the skin. If it leaves a light imprint, it is ripe. If it’s too soft, it’s too old.

NOVEMBER IS GENERALLY CONSIDERED TO BE A FAIRLY GLOOMY MONTH, ESPECIALLY IN THE RUN UP TO CHRISTMAS, BUT NOT FOR THE SPANISH HOUSEWIFE. In times past she would be busy with her husband working on the matanza (killing of livestock), which involved a lot of hard labour after the slaughter: preparing the meats, making sausages and other products to store to feed the family for the months ahead. So at the end of such a busy day many family meals were based on seasonal vegetables. Yes! Versatile vegetables abound at this time of the year: from aubergines and courgettes to red and green peppers. And, of course, those all-important staples: onions, tomatoes and garlic.

I often use courgettes to make the following dish. It makes four generous portions, keeps and heats up well. It is great served as an accompanying vegetable with meat or as a starter with a fried egg.

But what about the poor old pumpkin, so rarely used these days except, of course, for carving into heads for Halloween. You can roast pieces of pumpkin tossed in olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper in the oven and use to accompany meat dishes or… you can make this delicious spicy soup which, incidentally, stores really well in the freezer.

CREAMY PUMPkIN SOUP Ingredients: 2 sticks celery, chopped 2 medium-sized carrots, chopped 2 medium onions, peeled and chopped 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus additional for drizzling 1 kg squash, peeled, seeded and cut into ½ inch (1.25 cm) cubes ½ kg potatoes, peeled and cut into ½ inch (1.25 cm) cubes 1 whole chilli 2 teaspoons coarse sea salt 6 cups chicken or beef stock, preferably hot • Cook the celery, carrot and onions in two tablespoons of oil in a large sauce over a low heat, stirring occasionally until tender, but not browned (approximately 10 minutes). • Then add the squash, potatoes and chilli and sea salt. • Stir in the hot stock, cover and simmer until the vegetables are tender (approximately 30 minutes). • Remove from the heat, discard the chilli and blitz up the soup in the same saucepan until nice and creamy. Check the seasoning and add some freshly ground black pepper and more water if necessary. • Serve just as it is or with a sprinkling of croutons.

Green courgettes are usually more plentiful than white ones. The green ones are great for soups or as a vegetable to accompany meat, etc. Both varieties are great in stir-fries or can be finely sliced in rounds, dipped in flour and deep-fried like the aubergines (see opposite page). Courgettes are always to be found in my vegetable rack and the following soup is an ideal winter warmer, which also freezes well so you can make it for use the same day or double the quantities and store the dish in the freezer. Diced bacon is easily available in small packets in local supermarkets, but use whatever you fancy – the taste is just as good.

COURGETTE AND BACON SOUP Ingredients: (serves 4 to 6) 600 gr courgettes (zucchinis) 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large onion, sliced

300 gr diced bacon 1 lt ham, chicken or vegetable stock salt and pepper to taste

• Cut the stork and tips off the courgettes and wash in cold water. Then chop into two-centimetre chunks. • Heat the oil in a large pan and fry two-thirds of the bacon until it starts to brown. Add the onion and cook, stirring frequently until the onion is soft and translucent. • Stir in the courgettes and add the stock. Bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 30 minutes or so until the courgettes are very tender. • Remove the soup from the heat and allow to cool before processing with a hand blender or in the food processor. Reheat and season with salt and pepper. • Before serving cook the remaining bacon in a small frying pan until crisp then remove and drain on kitchen paper. • Serve the soup with a sprinkling of the bacon pieces on top and, if you fancy it, a dollop of yoghourt.

The following recipe is so easy and makes a great accompaniment for fish or meat. So easy and so good!

BAkED AUBERGINES

Ingredients: 4 or 5 medium or large green courgettes 3 tablespoons olive oil 4 garlics, peeled and coarsely chopped salt and pepper

Ingredients: (serves 4 to 6) 4 medium-sized aubergines 2 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped 2 or 3 tablespoon olive oil approx. 2 teaspoons salt and pepper

• Lightly scrape, wash and dry the courgettes and dice into approximately one-centimetre pieces. • Heat the olive oil in a frying pan, lightly fry the garlic, add the courgettes and stir well to coat with the oil. • Cover with a lid and leave to simmer until the courgettes are soft. • Remove the lid, season with the salt and pepper, turn up the heat and cook until lightly browned Left-over cooked cauliflower also works well and means that you have another easily prepared vegetable to accompany meat dishes. Or you can use mushrooms, setas or hongos.

• Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) / mark 4. • Trim off the stalks, cut the aubergines lengthwise in half and make deep intersecting cuts in the exposed flesh to form a lattice design. Season with the salt and freshly ground pepper. Sprinkle with the finely chopped garlic, pressing it down into the deep cuts in the flesh. • Lightly oil a roasting tin and arrange the aubergines – cut sides uppermost – in a single layer. • Sprinkle the cut surfaces with more olive oil and bake for about 35 minutes or until the aubergines are tender and are lightly browned on the surface. Serve hot.

CAULIFLOwER SOUP

But now let’s try a tasty cauliflower soup, which also includes the seasonal almond.

Ingredients: 1 cauliflower with outer leaves intact 2 medium onions, roughly chopped 2 tablespoons oil or 50 gr butter 1½ lt vegetable stock 50 gr ground almonds

½ teaspoon grated nutmeg 100 ml double cream To garnish: fresh parsley, chopped flaked almonds, toasted

• Roughly chop the cauliflower together with the best of the green leaves. • Melt the oil or butter in a pan and sauté the onions and cauliflower for at least 10 minutes or until golden brown. • Add the stock and bring to the boil. Then lower the heat to a simmer and add the ground almonds and nutmeg. • Cover the pan and simmer for around 20 minutes. • Transfer the mixture to a blender, add the double cream and blend until smooth. • Pour into warm bowls, sprinkle with the parsley and toasted almonds, and serve.

A wonderful tapa or starter is fried aubergine slices (berenjenas fritas), which you do have to soak before cooking. Many people use milk to soak the aubergine slices, but a chef friend of mine told me he always uses beer, so I tried it and he is right!

BERENJENAS FRITAS Ingredients: (serves 4 to 6) 4 medium sized aubergines 1 can beer 2 or 3 tablespoons flour • Cut the ends off the aubergines and peel them. Cut into thin slices and soak in the beer for around half an hour. Remove to kitchen paper and dry. • Toss in the flour to give them a light coating and fry in a deep fat fryer, or in a frying pan with plenty of oil, for a few minutes until golden brown. • Remove, drain on more kitchen paper and serve with a sprinkling of salt or with a drizzle of miel de la caña (or local honey).

GOLF AT ITS BEST European Tour action… from Mallorca to Valderrama The European Tour comes to another intriguing conclusion at the end of this month (25-28 November) with the Dubai World Championship – when the season-long Race to Dubai winner will also be crowned. During a magnificent season for the Tour, three members became Grand Slam champions (Graeme McDowell, US Open; Louis Oosthuizen, British Open; and Martin Kaymer, US PGA Championship). Two of those players won two of the six events held in Spain during 2010 Tour: Oosthuizen, the Open de Andalucía,

which was the first event in Europe after the Tour’s early-season sojourn around the world; and McDowell, the inaugural Andalucía Valderrama Masters, the final event before the Tour headed to Asia and Dubai. After the Valderrama event, England’s Lee Westwood replaced Tiger Woods at the top of the world rankings… and, of course, also this season Europe won the Ryder Cup against the US. Here we look back at the Tour’s journey through Spain: Málaga, Sevilla, Mallorca, Madrid, Castellón and Sotogrande.

OPEN DE ESPAÑA Real Club de Golf de Sevilla – 19 April-2 May

IBERDROLA OPEN CALA MILLOR MALLORCA Pula, Son Servera – 13-16 May

At 35th in the world, Álvaro Quirós was the highest-ranked player in the field, and Europe’s biggest hitter confirmed his status when he joined Seve Ballesteros, Sergio García and Antonio Garrido as the only home winners of the Spanish Open since 1972. It was his fourth Tour win, but not all easy going. English rookie James Morrison, making his first start since winning in Madeira three weeks before, forced a play-off but double-bogeyed the first extra hole to hand the title to Quirós. “I think it’s one of the most important things in my life, for sure,” the Spaniard said later. “To be the winner of your open is something really, really great – with the Ryder Cup and the World Cup it’s the best three things in golf for me.” Unfortunately, the 27-year-old from Guadiaro (near Sotogrande on the Costa del Sol) was unable to maintain his form and missed out on a debut in the Ryder Cup.

José María Cañizares won three play-offs out of six during a celebrated professional career, including his only US Champions Tour (seniors) victory after nine extra holes against Gil Morgan at the 2001 Toshiba Senior Classic. Nine years later, son Alejandro only had to endure one sudden-death hole in his first Tour play-off but unfortunately there was no happy ending in the Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca at Pula Golf. After a fascinating and roller-coaster final day’s play at the course re-designed by José María Olazábal, Swede Peter Hanson drew level on the 18th (both six-under 274) while Cañizares, already finished with the clubhouse lead, warmed up on the practice ground. On the first extra hole, back on the 18th, Cañizares, whose only win on the European Tour had been the 2006 Cadillac Russian Open in just his third start on the circuit, went into the frontside bunker and was only able to scramble a bogey, while Hanson completed a solid par. His own first win on the European Tour had come in sudden-death against compatriot Peter Gustafsson in the 2005 Spanish Open at San Roque, on the Costa del Sol. (Photos: Luis Corralo)

OPEN DE ANDALUCÍA Parador – 25-28 March In 1987, Nick Faldo won the Spanish Open at Las Brisas before going on to collect his first major title, the British Open. This year, Louis Oosthuizen matched that feat (and some), winning his first European Tour title, the Open de Andalucía at the Parador course in Málaga, before providing one of the biggest Grand Slam shocks in recent history with a thumping British Open triumph. At the Parador, there were a couple of stumbles along the way – “I was quite nervous down the stretch and very nervous on the 18th tee” – but in the end the 27-year-old South African closed with a three-under 67 to secure victory and avoid a fifth runner-up finish on the Tour. ANDALUCÍA VALDERRAMA MASTERS Valderrama – 28-31 October

Sport & Leisure Life & Living MADRID MASTERS Real Sociedad Hípica Española Club de Campo – 27-30 May Luke Donald stamped his potential Ryder Cup credentials (he was to be a captain’s pick by Colin Montgomerie) by winning his first European Tour title since the 2004 Omega European Masters. Just a week before, the Englishman had missed out on winning the prestigious BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth by a stroke, after carding a double-bogey seven on the penultimate hole. On this occasion, he eagled the 16th on the final day to set up a one-stroke victory over Wales’ Rhys Davies. “It’s been a while since I won,” said Donald (actually the 2006 Honda Classic on the US PGA Tour), “and to put last week behind me makes me very proud.”

As experienced Tour pros are well aware, Valderrama can seem oh so benign – just before the wind picks up and it blows the field off course. Graeme McDowell, who carded a three-over 74 on the final day to win the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach – another fearsome layout – went into the last round of the inaugural Andalucía Valderrama Masters sharing the lead on six-under with fellow Northern Irishman Gareth Maybin. Eighteen holes later, after scrambling round on a windy day, he survived Valderrama’s notoriously tough home stretch to eke out a two-stroke win over Maybin, Irishman Damien McGrane and Denmark’s Søren Kjeldsen, who won the Volvo Masters the last time a European Tour event was held at the course (2008). Later, a delighted McDowell said, “It’s very special to win here and I draw a lot of comparisons with Pebble Beach. It was a war of attrition and the last man standing really. Damien and Gareth are both grinders in their own right and I was just happy that I could eventually get the job done. It really has been a special season and I couldn’t imagine it would have gone the way it has. But I didn’t want to rest on my laurels and just cruise to Dubai, I wanted to try and finish strong.” McDowell moved closer, in second place, to Race to Dubai leader Martin Kaymer, the German struggling at Valderrama (he finished 21st) after three consecutive Tour wins, starting with the US PGA Championship. Kaymer could have gone to the top of the world rankings if he had won, finished runner-up alone or joint second with just one other player, but that honour instead went to Lee Westwood, who didn’t play at Valderrama. He ended Tiger Woods’ 281-week reign at the top, to become the first European since Nick Faldo in 1994 to lead the world rankings. “I have a great relationship with Tiger,” said the 37-year-old Westwood. “We have mutual respect and have always got on well, on and off the course. I give him a little bit of stick and he gives me a little. When Tiger was in his pomp everyone thought it (being number one) was unattainable. But form comes and goes – I’m a perfect example of that – and when we started to get a bit nearer the top of the rankings we started to think it was attainable. It’s a great honour and a big responsibility. It certainly sounds and feels good right now. When you are growing up and people say what do you want to achieve, everyone says I want to be the best in the world. Right at this moment I can show people the world rankings and say I am the best on the planet.”

CASETLLÓ MASTERS COSTA AZAHAR Club de Campo del Mediterráneo, Castellón, Valencia – October 21-24 At 17 years and 188 days, Matteo Manassero became the youngest winner in the history of the European Tour, beating the previous record of New Zealander Danny Lee who, while still an amateur, won the 2009 Johnnie Walker Classic aged 18 and 213 days. The former British Amateur champion had first made international headlines when he finished 13th in the 2009 British Open, winning the silver medal as leading amateur. In Castellón, he began the final day two behind Gary Boyd but, as the Englishman wavered (eventually finishing third), his young Italian rival blossomed – beating second-placed Ignacio Garrido by four shots. “It’s just fantastic,” he said. “I always try to work for this moment and now I’ve done it it’s unbelievable; it’s a special moment. I couldn’t really imagine being a winner in my first year and I just tried to keep my card – but I’m a winner already!”

sTRIKE IT BETTER

Golf lesson

You should start by looking at your footwork for solid ball striking. All great ball strikers have good footwork in common. I will often video the feet of a student separately when analysing their swing. The power is sourced from the ground and a proper swing starts from the ground up. Imagine trying to play golf wearing ice skates… how far could you hit it then? Golf shoes have studs for a reason, and both feet should be in contact with the ground at address and remain in contact with the ground during the backswing. At the completion of the backswing around 75 per cent of your weight should have shifted to your right foot (for right-handed golfers). The majority of golfers can manage this without too many issues; it is the downswing that causes the problems. Most high-handicappers struggle with their footwork. Some get up on their toes on the downswing, which most often causes a wicked slice or a pull hook. Others fall back on their heels, which causes similar problems. To “strike it better” the ball MUST be hit it on the downswing. To achieve this your weight must transfer to your left foot during the downswing. Here’s the key: at impact you should have around 75 per cent of your weight on your left foot and most of that should be in the left heel. Get the footwork right and then you will be able to keep your hands in front of the clubhead at impact and hit “ball then the ground” (see how Tiger does it in the photo sequence). Practice drill: Hit from grass, NOT mats, for this drill. With the ball in the centre of your stance and a 7 or 8-iron in your hand. Stick a tee peg FLUSH into the ground three to four centimetres in FRONT of your ball. The aim is to HIT the tee. The ball will, of course, get in the way and be struck on the downswing before the bottom of the swing arc. Technical explanation The downward motion of the clubhead compresses the golf ball on the clubface. The point of separation is clearly before the clubhead contacts the ground. The lines on the ball show the backspin generated.

NUTRITION – SOUPS

A great quick and easy way to fill up on these chilly winter days is to pack in a bowl of hot, nutritious soup. This particular recipe is full of beta carotene and fibre. Toss in some prawns or cubed chicken or tofu to meet your protein requirements.

Staying fit ... and happy

LENTIL AND BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP

The flavours of this soup only get better as it sits for a day or two. You can use other winter squash such as acorn or buttercup.

Ingredients (serves 6)

with Katie Handyside

1 medium butternut squash, about 5 cups (1.25 lt), diced, seeds reserved

Target muscles: abdominals, core, bottom and lower. Begin: Place both of your forearms on a stability ball or underneath you on the floor, with your legs extended behind you. Tighten your abs and lift your hips. Make sure you are balanced and stable on top of the ball or floor. Action: Hold your position as you lift one leg off the ground several inches; avoid arching your lower back. Hold for two breaths, and then return to the starting position. Repeat, alternating legs. 2. LUNGE AND OVERHEAD PRESS Target muscles: legs, bottom, core, shoulders, back and biceps. Begin: Standing upright with dumbbells at your side; step forward with your left leg into a lunge position – knee at 90 degrees. (Be sure not to let your back knee touch the floor, and look down to make sure your knee does not go beyond your toe – i.e. that it is aligned with your ankle.) Action: From the lunge, transition into a standing posture by moving your right leg forward, placing your weight on your left leg. Simultaneously, curl the dumbbells up to your shoulders

Make this move harder: Pulse your leg 10 times in the lifted position. Increase the weight 3. ALTERNATING PUSH-UP Target muscles: shoulders, triceps and chest. Begin: In a push-up position, begin with your right hand on a dumbbell or ball or step/raised platform, your left hand on the ground. Action: Move your body down toward the ground, as in a regular push-up, and then return to the starting position. After completing one repetition, place your left hand on the dumbbell and remove your right hand; place it on the floor. This is one repetition. Complete these sets by keeping on changing the hand that is on the floor with assisted push-ups with your knees on the floor – or challenge yourself with straight legs, depending on your strength. Over time straighten your legs and perform as many push-ups as you can and then drop your knees to the floor and continue 4. FLOOR TRICEP DIP WITH BODY WEIGHT Target muscles: triceps, shoulders and chest. Begin: Assume a normal tricep dip position

Ingredients (serves 4)

juice of lemon, about 1 tablespoon (15 ml)

4 tablespoons (60 ml) tamarind pulp 1 chilli, seeded and chopped 3 cloves garlic, chopped 2 in (5 cm) piece fresh ginger, peeled and chopped 5 medium tomatoes, chopped 2 teaspoons (10 ml) mustard seeds 2 teaspoons (10 ml) cumin powder 2 teaspoons (10 ml) coriander powder 3 lbs (1.5 kg) farmed mussels 1/2 cup (125 ml) fresh coriander, chopped 1/5 teaspoon (2 ml) turmeric freshly ground pepper and salt to taste

1 tsp (5 ml) turmeric 1 tsp (5 ml) cumin seeds 1 medium onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 in (2.5 cm) piece fresh ginger, minced

coriander

The best way to achieve this is by combining as many body parts into the exercise as possible. Try the short circuit below: total exercise time 20 minutes – but make sure you crank up the intensity. (If you have more time then simply repeat the circuit – keep moving in between the exercises so you continue burning those calories.) This targets all the major muscle groups.

(Optional – use a stability ball or start from the floor)

salt and pepper to taste

1 cup (250 ml) red or yellow lentils

What better excuse to get healthy and in shape than a wedding! In order to fit in your workout with everything else you have to organise you need a short, intensive calorie-burning, quick-toning routine to keep those stress levels in check and have you looking and feeling great on the day.

and then press them over your head while bringing your extended right leg in front of you. Repeat from the start (standing) position. Alternatively, you can try walking lunges.

1 teaspoon (5 ml) garam masala or curry powder

Environmentally friendly: Mussels are inexpensive, easy to prepare and farmed in a manner that is actually beneficial to surrounding waterways. Health benefits: Mussels have a laudable protein-to-fatratio and a wealth of iron, the antioxidant selenium, phosphorus, vitamin C and vitamin B12 – needed for proper nerve function and DNA synthesis. Recipe note: You can find tamarind pulp at most Asian and Indian markets. Clams would work in this dish as well. The recipe can be halved.

2 tablespoon (30 ml) olive oil

PRE-WEDDING WORKOUT

1. PLANK WITH ALTERNATING LEG LIFT

MUSSEL AND TOMATO SOUP

with all four limbs on the ground – your arms behind you and keep your hands aligned with your shoulders. The knees should be bent at approximately 45 degrees, with the lower legs perpendicular to the ground. To complete the starting position, straighten your left leg so that it is pointing upward at 45 degrees in line with the right upper leg Action: Lower your body toward the ground by bending at the elbows and increasing knee flexion with the weight in the back of your arms. Once you almost reach the ground, push yourself back to the starting position. Repeat, then change the lifted leg. Start with two minutes of skipping, and between each exercise perform two minutes of skipping. Total skip time = 10 minutes. Great workout: equivalent to a 30-minute jog.

Bake for 25 minutes, or until the squash becomes tender, stirring halfway. • Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, combine the lentils, turmeric and two and a half cups (625 ml) of water. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer covered for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the lentils begin to break down. • Clean the squash seeds of pulp and dry well with a paper towel. Toast the seeds together with salt to taste in a dry pan over a medium heat until golden, about three to four minutes, stirring frequently. • Add the cooked squash to the lentils and mash with a fork or potato masher. • In a large saucepan, heat one tablespoon (15 ml) of oil over a medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and heat for one minute. Add the onion, garlic and ginger and cook until the onion softens and becomes translucent – about five minutes. Stir in the garam masala and cook for one minute. Add the lentils, squash, purée, salt, pepper and three cups (750 ml) of water or vegetable stock. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Add more liquid if desired. Stir in lemon juice. • Puree in a blender in batches. Ladle into serving bowls and garnish with toasted squash seeds and coriander. Golden mean for investors

The relatively safe return of corporate bonds constitutes a fine alternative for investors, says Mads Schierup Petersen, Head of Business Development.

SAFER THAN SHARES AND MORE PROFITABLE THAN BONDS… CORPORATE BONDS ARE BECOMING POPULAR WITH PRIVATE INVESTORS. The financial crisis has, to a high degree, brought a very special asset class into focus: corporate bonds, an asset class which has so far produced good returns for investors. In addition, the credit market has been attractive to the issuing companies, which have had an alternative to banks as regards funding. This is part of the explanation of why Danish companies – e.g. A.P. Moller-Maersk and Vestas – have been active in a credit market which already includes other Danish companies such as DONG, ISS and TDC, according to Mads Schierup Petersen, Head of Business Development. Corporate bonds offer a real alternative to investors because they are safer. Moreover they out-perform Danish government bonds. Investors can choose to invest in low-risk bonds – e.g. Danish government bonds maturing in 2013 and 2015 – and obtain a yield-tomaturity of 1.16% and 1.67%, respectively.

ATTRACTIVE FOR MANY INVESTORS

The financial crisis led to major declines in corporate bond prices. Recent years have seen large price increases and high interest rates. The yield outlook for corporate bonds is now nearing more normal levels. The market offers exciting alternatives for investors with different risk profiles. For further details, please contact Mads Schierup Petersen, Head of Business Development: Tel. (+41) 71 227 81 23.

P AIRPORT-PARKING

HIGHER YIELD POTENTIAL

MALLORCA

In general the risk associated with corporate bonds is far bigger than with government bonds but so is return. Furthermore, investors should not forget that the investment horizon is relatively long, most frequently at maturity, because corporate bonds are often traded at large spreads. – At Sydbank we rank our corporate bond recommendations relative to risk. If instead of buying one bond you wish to spread your risk it is advantageous to invest in corporate bonds via an investment fund. Sydbank has great expertise in analysing these investment funds.

FIXED RETURN FROM THE BEGINNING

The difference between investments in corporate bonds and investments in shares is that the bond return is fixed unless the issuer goes bankrupt. In contrast, the share return is far more uncertain and depends on the development of the business, slumps and booms as well as other factors, and therefore shares may fluctuate to a lesser or greater extent. Consequently, the relatively satisfactory return on corporate bonds is an attractive alternative for investors. In falling share markets it will often be expedient for investors to be exposed to businesses by way of bonds. – Before investing in corporate bonds you must assess first and foremost if the issuers are able to service their debts, which is crucial in determining whether or not you will get your investment back, comments Mads Schierup Petersen.

WORTH KNOWING ABOUT CORPORATE BONDS:

Corporate bonds… …are bonds issued by companies. …are bonds with high risk profile. …are in terms of risk considered a combination of ordinary bonds and shares. …may over time produce a higher yield than Danish government and mortgage bonds. …are a valuable supplement to savings in bonds and shares. …usually generate the highest yield when the company has a low rating.

Penn to Paper I am pretty sure that I am having a mid-life crisis. Then again, as I have a crisis on a regular basis, I should be used to them by now! The interesting thing is that I have noticed that I seem to be reverting to my student days (and, believe me, that’s quite a while ago now!). My fridge looks like something from The Young Ones and I am regressing back to my early days in radio by turning into a groupie… all I need to do is to find my favourite old leather jacket! I blame the abundance of great live music on offer here on Mallorca where, for the price of a drink, you can go into a bar and hear so many of our local performers doing their thing. Over the past few months I have seen Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson, the Beatles and Elton John. Obviously only one was the real article, but who cares! I love a live gig and one thing that I will never understand is how

people can sit still and just watch when a singer or band is giving it large on the mike. I have tried – really I have – but my knees start first… they begin to bob up and down all by themselves, then my bum wiggles, the shoulders get involved and before I know it I am full-on flinging myself all over the place like David Brent in The Office. That is what music does to me and I don’t care. I have never claimed to be “cool”. I lost any credibility on that score when I wore that old leather jacket with a Ra Ra skirt and leg warmers. If you think that you have what it takes to please an audience there is a chance for you to prove it throughout this month at the M Factor talent contest, with heats every Saturday night at Mood Beach in Costa dén Blanes. So don’t just sing into your hairbrush in front of the mirror: get up on stage and prove that you are the next Joe McElderry or Alexandra Burke. If you want to hear great music on your radio, tune into the only programmes broadcast in English on the island at 92.9FM or online at englishradiomallorca.com. (Laura Penn presents English Radio Mallorca every Saturday and Sunday from 10am till 1pm on 92.9FM, Radio Marratxi.)

WHAT’S ON IN NOVEMBER

Compiled by Laura Penn: laura@mallorcalifeandstyle.com

november Monday 1st MALLORCA CRICKET CLUB VERSUS THE PIRATES XI

Always an entertaining spectacle… as the cast and crew of the Pirates Adventure take on our local “men in white” at the ground in Magaluf. Some clever spark has managed to schedule the match the day after the Pirates’ 21st Halloween end-ofseason bash, so it is well worth popping down to see how the six-packed (but hungover) acrobats fare against the “experience” of the MCC team. Wickets pitched at 1pm… with an especially well-stocked bar and snacks available at the clubhouse. Friday 5th BONFIRE NIGHT AT MALLORCA CRICKET CLUB

After last year’s washout due to a tornado hitting the ground and spoiling the party, this year’s celebrations promise to be bigger and better than ever. Now in its 16th year this is probably one of the biggest gatherings of expats (of many nationalities) on the island. The grand fireworks display will be followed by live entertainment from Wired and the Ta Las, and the event is hosted by yours truly and Froggy Fred of English Radio. Gates open at 6pm: adults €5; children 5-12 years €1; under-fives free. Free parking and plenty of refreshments on offer. Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th XXI MINI GOLF TOURNAMENT AT GOLF FANTASIA

Four more light-footed hopefuls will take to the dance floor in an attempt to gain the coveted winner’s trophy. Sunday 28th ESRA NORTH WINTER WONDERLAND CHRISTMAS FAYRE The gang at ESRA North are always busy in the winter and this year they are celebrating 25 years of fund-raising with a magical Winter Wonderland fayre at the Santa Domingo Cloisters in Pollença. Having raised over €95,000 you would think they would have a rest… but no! They are aiming for the €100,000 mark with this special day, which will include stalls, entertainment and much more.

islAnd bulletin LIFE & LIVING AUTUMN FAYRE FOR CHARITY IN CALVIÁ

HELPING OTHERS AT CHRISTMAS TIME Mediterranea, the charity based in Portals Nous, has announced the projects it is working on for the next 12 months. These include feeding the needy in Calvià and Palma; reading, writing, Spanish, English and computer lessons in Palma Nova, Palma and Son Gotleu; and help for senior citizens. Dr Michael Stoma, the founder of the charity, is also appealing for people to donate goods that could be used as Christmas gifts for those in need this festive season. The sun shone on a special charity day in Santa Ponça organised by the Rotary Club of Calvià. Hundreds of people took part in the annual sponsored walk around the town and then enjoyed the Autumn Fayre and a massive free concert on the promenade featuring many local entertainers. The acts included Wired, Lee Anthony, Graeme Dee, Gaynor, Charlie and Jon Paul Bradshaw. The concert was arranged and hosted by John Ballard and Angela Guerrero of Calvià Town Hall Over €9,000 was raised for local children’s charities on the island and a fabulous day was had by all.

GALA FINALE FOR KARTING VELA CHALLENGE

The roar of engines and smell of petrol prevailed at the race track in Cán Picafort, where the Vela Karting Challenge saw more than 15 teams of four drivers battle it over a three-hour endurance race on 120kph karts! The event was followed by the famous Vela Ball at Ses Cases de Font Seca near Palmanyola. The black tie affair consisted of a champagne reception, prize giving and buffet dinner, followed by the Whisky Facile band and DJ Julian playing music till late.

CALLING ALL SINGERS Mood Beach Bar is offering would-be stars a chance to sing their way to up to €1,000 cash in the ““M Factor” talent competition, based on the x Factor TV show. You will be able to show off your singing by performing just one song; then the audience will vote for their favourite to go through to the final. There are two categories: junior (19 years or younger) and senior (20 and older). The finals will be held on two separate evenings when contestants will sing three songs in different categories: rock/pop; song from a musical; and personal choice. The winner of the junior competition will take home €500 and the senior winner will pocket €1,000. The heats and finals are hosted by popular local DJ Jon White. In order to take part, contact Vicki McLeod by email at Vicki@moodbeach.com or Tel. 638 767 366.

DOUBLE OR NOTHING! Do you feel lucky? If you like a gamble, then take up the challenge laid down by Mood Beach Bar and Restaurant in Costa D’en Blanes, which has come up with an innovative idea for the winter restaurant season. “We wanted to offer our clients a really good deal, and we wanted to excite them a little with a dare!” said Margaret Whittaker OBE, the owner of Mood. Every Friday and Saturday night Mood’s customers can choose from a select three-course menu plus an amuse bouche and petit fours, and sip unlimited amounts of house wine with their meal, for the bargain price of €49 per head. However, when the bill arrives the diners then have the option to either just pay the bill, or to toss a coin. If they call the toss correctly then they don’t have to pay; if they get it wrong then they have to pay double. Intrigued? Visit moodbeach.com or Tel. 971 676 456.

Johanna Lane and Ayesha Wood run Diamond Events, specialising in weddings, sports and corporate promotions and events. Vicki McLeod caught up with the duo after a very busy season.

Inspirational Floral Design +34 676 369 726 www.joannawalton.com

What originally brought you to Mallorca? Johanna: I feel like I grew up here. I didn’t go to school here but my family holidays were always in Mallorca. After I finished my degree in Newcastle in fashion design, I did an apprenticeship with Alexander Queen and I moved to Mallorca. Ayesha: I was living in the UK and knew someone who had a club in Cala d’Or. I got a job there running the promotions and working as a professional dancer. After four years of moving back and forth from the UK I just decided to stay. What is your favourite place in Mallorca? Ayesha: I don’t have a particular favourite place but what I love about Mallorca is how it can surprise you. Sometimes when I’m driving around I’ll suddenly have my breath taken away by a view. It’s easy to get caught up in day-to-day living, and it’s lovely to be reminded that we live somewhere really beautiful. Johanna: And the storms here are amazing; the autumn is really good for those! Have you visited any of the other Balearic islands? Ayesha & Johanna: (lots of laughing) Ibiza! It has to be the number one island to visit for a bit of an escape and a party. We love it, but we couldn’t live there full-time! How did you get into wedding and event planning? Johanna: A couple of friends of ours asked us to do their wedding party. But we only had two weeks to get it together. We really went to town with it to make it the best day possible for them. We even flew in stiltwalkers from the UK. On the day we got so many comments from their guests saying we should do it for a living that we thought, well, why not? We’ve been in business for two years now.

Your furniture shopping advisor. Tel. 619 656 058 www.furniturefinder.es

Ayesha: We love it; we’re constantly doing different things – we do weddings, golf tournaments, club nights, beach rugby, birthdays... The variety of events gives us inspiration – the different experiences and challenges give us new ideas. Johanna: You’ve got to constantly change and adapt to new clients and that’s really exciting for us. What is the most fascinating place you have visited around the world? Ayesha: The Similian Islands in Thailand – it means “seven” and it is seven uninhabited islands. It’s a four-hour boat trip to get there; the snorkelling is amazing. I have the most wonderful memories of that trip. I loved the feeling of being isolated and detached from everything. Johanna: From the sea some of Mallorca looks like just like Thailand. For me it would have to be New Zealand – I travelled around the North and South Islands and went everywhere by bus: every day was different – sky diving, climbing up a glacier, swimming with dolphins… it’s so varied. I could be travelling on the bus for 12 hours and it didn’t get boring; the landscape constantly changes. Have you seen women’s roles change in your industry? Johanna: Maybe not so much with wedding planning. Girls know what brides want, so wedding planners do tend to be women. Ayesha: But club promotions have definitely changed – pretty girls would do the door, but you would have a guy as the head of the promotions. These days it’s not unusual to see a woman in charge as well. What’s your favourite Mallorcan dish? Johanna: Pa amb oli. Ayesha: Frito mallorquin.

And drink? Johanna: I really like red Faustino I. Ayesha: It depends on what time of day it is. In the afternoon I quite like cold sangria in the summer, but after dark it would definitely have to be white wine. What would be your own dream wedding? Ayesha: My wedding would be really relaxed and friendly, really casual. There would be LOADS of music. Johanna: I think mine would be pretty much the same. I’d like to have a paella, or a barbecue, nothing formal. I’d want it to be quite intimate. Ayesha: Your wedding should be your own personal declaration of love. ML&S!: Perhaps you should get married to each other! Ayesha: You’re not the first person to say that! What was the last album you downloaded? Ayesha: Elton John, after his concert. We had a brilliant night. Johanna: No, it was Pendulum after the Mallorca Rocks gig the next day. Ayesha: Yes, you’re right; we got both of the albums after that weekend. Both fantastic. And, finally, what’s in your handbag? Johanna: What’s not in my handbag! Ayesha: I don’t have to carry very much ‘cause Jo’s got it all!

XMAS PARTY! Johanna and Ayesha are planning a Christmas party for 10 December. If you would like more information about them visit: diamondevents.es
