elebrities do not always show their most endearing qualities when thrust into the media spotlight. Away from the glare, however, when the stage lights are dimmed and the real person within can emerge, most tend to be far more ingratiating.

This is especially the case when they are supporting worthy causes, as so many do: sometimes quietly away from the cameras; on other occasions more publicly when it is important to harness as much publicity as possible to help people in need. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and – as in previous years – the list is long and honourable of celebrities lending their support in a variety of ways and often in conjunction with a top fashion or beauty products brand. In this month’s In Vogue, Fashion Style and Health & Beauty sections, we reveal some of the generous initiatives devised to raise funds for organisations including Breast Cancer Care and the Pink Ribbon Foundation, and supported by such top celebrities as Kelly Osborne, Alexandra Burke and Sophie Ellis Bextor – all of whom have designed a limited edition range of shoes as part of the Stand Tall campaign. As Ellis Bextor notes, “How fantastic to have the perfect excuse to treat yourself to another pair. You’ll look great and be supporting a wonderful cause.” Katy Perry is another celebrity giving her time and name to various charities, including Keep a Breast, which supports campaigns around the world to educate young people about prevention and early detection. As a determined and talented young woman who has worked hard for her success since singing gospel songs in churches as a child, Katy’s inspirational example is especially appropriate for our cover feature this issue. Another local celebrity lending her support to breast cancer care and education is Victoria Moore, who is donating a percentage of sales from products in her Tropical Collection to the Pink Ribbon Foundation. Victoria is one of this month’s featured “Island Connections”, together with the king of charity golf events, Robert Winsor – in his case, raising funds for under-privileged children. Our Fashion Style section this issue features the “city chic” of Marc Cain; we enjoy a blast from the past behind the wheel of the new Porsche 911 Speedster; and our man on the fairways tests his handicap on one of Europe’s premier courses, Son Gual. Finally, we are delighted to welcome to our editorial team Laura Penn, who will be covering all the main society events and keeping us up to date with latest news from around the island; Allegra Curtis, the daughter of Hollywood legend Tony Curtis, who will be giving us the inside story on fellow celebrities’ beauty secrets; and Gillaine Hathaway, the doyenne of Spanish cuisine writers, who provides a tasty look at the “Flavours of the Mediterranean”.

KATY PERRY

From child gospel singer to teenage dreamer It sometimes seems as though Katy Perry became an overnight star. When she made it into the upper echelons of the international charts, with I Kissed a Girl, some people expected her to be just a one-hit wonder. Even Lily Allen joined the fray, calling her “an American version” of her – admittedly in retaliation for Perry describing Allen as “a skinnier version” of her. However, she did pay her dues before enjoying a meteoric rise to fame, and she is still around, so much so that she has been nominated in five categories for the MTV Europe Music Awards in Madrid on 7 November. In four of these, she will be up against arch rival Lady Gaga (best pop act, best song, best female act and best video), while the fifth is for best act on a world stage. (Lady Gaga also has a fifth nomination, for best act overall.) Born in Santa Barbara (California) on 25 October 1984 to two evangelical pastors, Katheryn Hudson was raised listening to gospel music, and from childhood into her teenage years sang in church. She was reportedly not allowed to listen to what her mother described as “secular music”, and attended Christian schools and camps. At the same time, however, she had voice lessons and learned to dance swing and jitterbug. At 15, so the story goes, she was noticed by rock veterans from Nashville and taken to the home of country music, where she was taught how to craft songs and play the guitar. Perry released a self-titled gospel album in 2001, as Katy Hudson, but the demise of the record company thwarted any success it may have had. She left home at 17 for Los Angeles and worked with producer Glen Ballard, was paired with production team The Matrix and began recording another solo album – but all these projects floundered due to lack of inter-

est (or, some might say, prescience) by the respective record companies. Then, in 2007, she signed with her fourth company, Capitol Music Group, changed her stage name to Perry (her mother’s maiden name) to avoid any confusion with Goldie Hawn’s actress daughter Kate Hudson, released her first internet single, Ur So Gay, and began recording tracks for the album One of the Boys. The record company worked hard to raise her profile and establish an image, and their (and her) efforts paid off with the release in May 2008 of I Kissed a Girl – which peaked at number one for seven weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and gained her a nomination for best female pop vocal performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards. She won best new act at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, and a Brit Award as best international female artist in 2009. She freely admits to having kissed a girl. “Of course I have. I can’t sing a song and not have done it. That’d be complete hypocrisy. I fancy Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman and Angelina Jolie – I’d definitely kiss them.” Of Johansson (who is said to have been the inspiration for I Kissed a Girl), she says, She is a classic beauty. I love that 1940s pin-up look.” Perry’s own look is fairly unconventional: brightly coloured, taking styles from different decades, and often with fruit-shaped accessories. She describes it as “very colourful and vintage”. She has become something of a fashion icon but seems keen to leave it at that: “If people want a role model, they can have Miley Cyrus.”

Billboard Hot 100 chart in just four weeks. It reportedly was the fastest rising single from a Capitol Records artist since Bobbie Gentry’s Ode to Billie Joe in 1967 – 17 years before Perry was born.

Her new album, Teenage Dream, was released worldwide in August. The first single, California Gurls, went to number one on the

Perry says of her music, “Someone kind of penned it for me the other day, and I’ve been using it ever since.” If readers are also not re-

celebrity Life & Livingprofile ally clear what that means, it may help to know that most of the themes in One of the Boys deal with heartbreak, teen adventure and “puking into toilets”. Her mother is said to be less than impressed with Perry’s post-teen direction, having been quoted by a British tabloid as disliking her daughter’s music and calling it “shameful and disgusting”. Perry insists her mother was misquoted. Her songs Ur So Gay and I Kissed a Girl have

achieved the admirable feat of being slammed by both gay and religious groups – labelled homophobic on the one hand and criticised for promoting homosexuality on the other. Or being “lezploitational” – and using “bio-curiosity” as a way to sell records. Perry responds to such controversy by noting, of Ur So Gay, “It’s not a negative connotation. It’s not like, ‘You’re so gay’, like ‘You’re so lame’, but the fact of the matter is that this boy should’ve been gay… It wasn’t stereotyp-

ing anyone in particular; I was talking about ex-boyfriends.” Her current boyfriend – fiancé, in fact – is Russell Brand, whom she met in 2008 when Perry filmed a cameo in Get Him to the Greek. She actually kissed Brand in her scene but it didn’t make the final cut. They reportedly began dating after the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where host Brand said, “Katy Perry didn’t win an award and she’s staying at the same hotel as me, so she’s gonna need a shoulder to cry on. So in a way I’m the real winner tonight.” Oddly, these words had a romantic resonance in Perry’s affections – and they became engaged in December.

Ref.-Nr. 1084

Around then, she said of Brand, “He’s a genius, and geniuses are both wonderful and delicate in the greatest way.” Since then she has come to the conclusion that he is also a “bridezilla”: he wants everything for the wedding monogrammed, while she is taking a more laidback approach. “I’m preparing a little bit here and there,” she told InStyle. “I have to stop eating McDonalds and start my dance classes.” She will also be investigating what is needed to apply for dual British citizenship. “I’m not too sure if I have to take a test as I’ve not had time to look into it. But England is like my second home.” Building • Construction management • Renovation • Valuation • maintenance Service • Holiday Rentals

THE BIG PICTURE

NEW RELEASES, WHAT’S BEING FILMED AT THE MOMENT, WHAT’S IN PRE-PRODUCTION AND WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE… MICKY REYNOLDS LOOKS AT WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF MOVIES

MOVIE OF THE MONTH

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (8 October, Spain; 24 September, US and UK) This is the long-awaited sequel to the OLIVER STONE award-winning 1987 original about the ins and outs of the New York stock exchange. The film was due to hit the big screen on 23 April but 20th Century Fox decided to delay the release as they thought more publicity would be gained by giving it a first screening at the Cannes festival in May. This sequel takes place 23 years after the original film and revolves around the 2008 financial crisis, with MICHAEL DOUGLAS returning in his Oscar-winning role as one of the screen’s most notorious villains, Gordon Gekko. Having recently been released from prison Gekko finds himself on the outside of a world he once dominated, but more important to him is repairing the damaged relationship with his estranged daughter Winnie (CAREY MULLIGAN), who blames him for the suicide of her brother, Rudy. To try to win her over, Gekko forms an alliance with her fiancé Jacob (SHIA LaBEOUF), an up and coming Wall Street trader, who begins to see him as a father figure after his mentor (FRANK LANGELLA) unexpectedly dies. Jacob believes a villainous big-shot from a rival banking giant (JOSH BROLIN) is responsible for the death and seeks revenge, asking Gekko for help in exchange for which he will help reconcile him with his daughter. There are also roles for SUSAN SARANDON as Jacob’s real-estate agent mother, ELI WALLACH and CHARLIE SHEEN, who played the central role of Bud Fox, a young trader in the original, and will make a cameo appearance – as will DONALD TRUMP and JIM CRAMER as themselves.

THE BIG PICTURE Machete

(1 October, Spain and UK; BEST OF THE REST 3 September, US) is based on the fake trailer that life LIFE & society LIVING This featured in the ROBERT RODRIGUEZ/

QUENTINE TARANTINO 2007 Grindhouse/Death Proof collaboration which featured DANNY TREJO and JEFF FAHEY, who both return to reprise their original roles. A renegade former “Mexican Federale” roams the cities, towns and streets of Texas looking for work after a shakedown from a drug lord (STEVAN SEGAL). Also stars ROBERT DE NIRO, MICHELLE RODRIQUEZ, CHEECH MARIN, LINSAY LOHAN and JESSICA ALBA.

The Other Guys

(15 October, Spain; 6 August, US; 17 September, UK) Comedy about two mismatched New York City detectives (DWAYNE “THE ROCK” JOHNSON and SAMUEL L. JACKSON) who seize an opportunity to step up like the city’s top cops (WILL FERRELL and MARK WAHLBERG), whom they idolise, when they are put on a seemingly innocuous case no other detective wants to touch – only things don’t quite go as planned. Also stars EVA MENDES, MICHAEL KEATON, STEVE COOGAN, BROOKE SHIELDS and DAMON WAYANS JR.

TAKE ONE It’s hard to believe that Resident Evil: Afterlife has taken the global box office by storm as many (including myself) thought it was a major disappointment. Due to its success the Constantin Film Produktion studios have already commissioned a fifth film for this franchise, with MILLA JOVOVICH already signed up to return as the zombie-blasting Alice. The makers have got some ideas but would like feedback from fans via Twitter to help them plan the plot. • JAMES CAMERON is also putting ideas together for the next two Avatar movies and one will be based under the oceans of Pandora, but don’t hold your breath as he said there will be no movement until at least 2014. • A possible blockbuster franchise to look out for in the future is The Dark Tower – a series of books written by STEPHEN KING (full article next month). Meanwhile, the UK’s answer to the above author, CLIVE BARKER, is currently overseeing the revamp of his Hellraiser series. Fans of this cult 20th century gore-fest franchise were disappointed to hear that the original Pinhead

22

(DOUG BRADLEY) had declined an offer for Hellraiser: Revelations. His replacement for the bringer-of-pain role is the virtually unknown STEFAN SCOTT SMITH. The plot: two friends unleash Pinhead from the infamous puzzle box while on a sight-seeing trip in Mexico. One of them (NICK EVERSHAM) decides to opt out of his pact with the notorious Cenobite and must swap himself with one of his own family members, while the other (JAY GILLESPIE) becomes Pseudo-Pinhead, a devoted Cenobite servant who mimics Pinhead’s every move and revels in the pain that eventually leads to his pleasure. • Every Scream movie has attracted famous cameos for its opening kill sequences and the fourth one, which is currently being filmed with WES CRAVEN at the helm, finds ANNA PAQUIN (True Blood) and KRISTEN BELL (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) feeling the cold steel of Ghostface’s blade. The plot: 10 years have passed and Sidney Prescott (NEVE CAMPBELL), who has put herself back together thanks in part to her writing, is visited by the Ghostface Killer. This cast also includes DAVID ARQUETTE, COURTNEY COX, EMMA ROBERTS, HAYDEN PANTETTIERE and RORY CAULKIN.

PRE HALLOWEEN HORROR ‘N’ GORE IN STORE As we all know October has always been a month for horror releases to coincide with Halloween on the 31st, and this year we have a pure horror fest versus supernatural face-off.

Since 2004, the Saw franchise has released a new pic annually on the Friday prior to the bewitching night. It was recently announced that this series had been named by the Guinness Book of World Records as the “most successful” horror film franchise and this year’s offering, the seventh flick in this gore-athon, has been shot in 3D. The six previous movies have bagged over $500 million at the box office If you don’t know what it’s all about… a dying cancer patient who is obsessed with teaching people the value of their own lives sets elaborate traps for his victims in a “jigsaw” style with the help of student-like followers. As in years gone by the makers are not letting on much about the plot but it does contain a record 11 torture traps. We are led to understand that a deadly battle rages over Jigsaw’s brutal legacy, a group of past survivors gather to seek the support of a self-help guru, and the dark secrets of fellow survivor (SEAN PATRICK FLANERY) unleash a new wave of terror. TOBIN BELL is back as Jigsaw, as is COSTAS MANDYLOR (Detective Hoffman) and BETTY RUSSELL as Jigsaw’s wife. There is talk that this could be the grand finale as takings have decreased for the past two films. But a new franchise is ready to step into the breach if Saw is no more – last year’s Paranormal Activity took the world by storm (costing just $15,000 to make and going on to bank $151 million worldwide) and its sequel was due to go head to head with Saw 3D on 22 October, but the latter has apparently been put back to the 29th (and it may be delayed even longer in Spain). The original film centred on a young couple who are haunted by a supernatural presence in their home, and the film was presented in the Blairwitch style of “found footage” from a hand-held camera set up by the couple in an attempt to photograph what is causing them grief. As with its rival, the makers are keeping their cards close to their chests regarding the plot but the lead female from the first film, Katie (KATIE FEATHERSTON), who vanished at the end, is back. A recent trailer showing in several Texas theatres had to be pulled after complaints that it was too frightening – but check out the one on the official site. After the trailer finishes, an image of the nursery room appears and, in the mirror, letters written in what seems to be blood spell out a message. What does it say? Have a look for yourself!

CULTURE & ENTERTAINMENT Life & Living The Ibiza and Mallorca Rocks seasons came to an end last month when Two Tone legends THE SPECIALS played to a sell-out crowd in San Antonio. The management has already announced that both venues will be back next year and they will be bigger and better with concerts every Tuesday in Mallorca from 31 May until 20 September, while Ibiza will entertain every Wednesday from 1 June until 21 September. On the 14th of this month CLIFF RICHARD reaches 70. Congratulations Sir… but one question: aren’t you supposed to retire at 65? Had he lived, JOHN LENNON would have also have been 70 on the 9th, and to commemorate the day eight of the former BEATLES main man’s solo albums will be re-released. Recently his despicable murderer had yet another parole application turned down and the attentionseeking **** revealed two new names that were on his “hit list” – ELIZABETH TAYLOR and chat show host JOHNNY CARSON. Idea: torture that sicko with continuous playing of music by JEDWARD – then let him out for a few days. SHAKIRA got herself into hot water with Barcelona locals during the filming of the video for her next single Loca with DIZZEE RASCAL. Residents complained when she jumped into the public fountain in the historic Pla de Palau, and called the police – who slapped a fine on the singer for breaking antisocial behaviour laws. The 33-year-old Columbian beauty releases her new album, Sale el Sol / The Sun Comes Out, on 19 October and it includes Loca and her football World Cup song Waka Waka (This Time For Africa).

Music news and backstage tidbits from around the globe

IT’S NO JOKE FOR GEORGE As expected GEORGE MICHAEL got locked up – and too right to! Maybe he thought he was above the law and would get away without punishment yet again. Fortunately, this was not the case; had Photo by Erik Weiss he got away scot-free it would surely have only been a matter of time before a tragic accident occurred. After he was sentenced to eight weeks bird (he will no doubt be out by the time you read this) some stupid female fan outside the court said, “What’s the problem – he hasn’t killed anybody.” Not yet you dozy mare – would she be saying that if one of her family had been whammed as a human crash barrier outside Snappy Snaps?

MADAME WINEHOUSE has been up to her old tricks again, upsetting the crowd from a private balcony at THE LIBERTINES’ pre-Reading/Leeds gigs (how good were their sets at those festivals). She got a shock when joining the band at the after-show get-together – it was not the usual booze-up but instead she found the band playing Monopoly. I bet PETE D’OH-ERTY had the Get Out Of Jail Free card up his sleeve.

On a lighter note, the jokes have been coming in thick ‘n’ fast… he ploughs into a camera development shop but police only have blurred photographic evidence. Top marks to the inmates when they welcomed the artist known as prisoner A8365AW with their own mocked renditions of Careless Whisper and Freedom. And what about the prison welcome pack? It included a pouch of tobacco and some rizlas – but it was missing a “good friend”. On the first night he had trouble sleeping as there was no dashboard or steering wheel to rest on. There are plenty more, but the editor has erred on the side of caution (The editor: in his infinite wisdom!) and declined to print them on the grounds that this is a family magazine. There were some good ones about “lewd” toilet acts and one referred to the trapped Chilean miners – we will let you use your imagination there! So we leave you with this one… on the day he got sent down Sony announced they were postponing the proposed re-release of a Faith album until 2011. But a spokesperson said a cover versions collection will replace it; songs include I Go To Sleep (THE PRETENDERS), I Fought The Law (various artists ), The Green, Green Grass of Home (TOM JONES), Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree (DAWN) and Please Release Me (ENGELBERT HUMPERDINK). It will be released the same time he is.

MTV awards come to Madrid The prestigious MTV Europe Music Awards bandwagon rolls into Madrid on Sunday 7 November at the 12,500-seater Caja Magica sports complex with an array of talent gracing the capital city. The awards list, which was announced last month, has pitched up a femme fatale face-off with LADY GAGA and KATY PERRY squaring up for four categories: best pop act, best song, best female act and best video. PERRY, who has been nominated in five categories in all, will sing live at the awards, together with LINKIN PARK. As we went to press, no other acts had been confirmed to play but the show will be live on MTV from 9pm.

The BBC have announced the line-up for this year’s Radio 2 Electric Proms. ELTON JOHN will open the event on Thursday 28 October and he will be joined on stage by British rapper PLAN B for a one-off collaboration. On Friday the 29th ROBERT PLANT takes centre stage, and NEIL DIAMOND rounds of this mini-fest on Saturday the 30th. All shows can be heard live on BBC Radio 2 at 9pm; and BBC Two will show highlights of all three shows followed by an exclusive documentary about each artist’s music and lives, with ELTON on Saturday 30 October, PLANT on Saturday 6 November and DIAMOND on Saturday 13 November. Programme times are still to be announced. Now this is what legends are made of – veteran Aussie ROLF HARRIS entertained passengers on a Portsmouth to Isle of Wight ferry by singing his 1969 UK number smash Two Little Boys over the tannoy system. Pure class! LADY GAGA dressed up for a mock presidential public address in protest against the US military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy which stops gays admitting their sexuality, saying: “Equality is the prime rib of America, but because I’m gay I don’t get the greatest cut of meat my country has to offer.” Talking of meat – how offal was that meat ensemble dress she wore at the MTV Video Music Awards in LA? It’s said that after the show her entourage cooked it up and finished it off with chips and tomato sauce. And when collecting one of her eight gongs from CHER her gender was questioned again when the star-struck loon said, “I never thought I’d ask Cher to hold my meat purse.” Think about it!

NEW ALBUM RELEASES On 18 October the KINGS OF LEON release their Come Around Sundown album, the follow-up to the 2008 smasher Only By The Night. This, their fifth offering, will no doubt top the album charts and a single, Radioactive, has already been released – other tracks getting high appraisal include Mary and Back Down South. The band were well pleased with themselves, saying their gigs at the August V Festivals were the best they had ever played – a friend of mine who was there agreed, saying it was the best she had ever seen them. Their current European tour comes to Madrid on 1 December for a solitary date in Spain and tickets are available from ticketmaster.es from 1 October. Hell House By Richard Matheson Rolf Rudolph Deutsch, a wealthy magazine and newspaper publisher, is dying and his impending demise gets him thinking seriously about the possibility of life after death. In a quest to discover the facts about the afterlife he enlists the help of physicist Dr. Lionel Barrett and two mediums, Florence Tanner and Ben Fischer, with the offer of $100,000 each to mount an investigation. The focus of their investigation centres on Belasco House, the former home of the notorious Emeric Belasco, a debauched millionaire and suspected murderer who had disappeared shortly after a massacre at his home. Locals had since dubbed the mansion Hells House as it was believed to be haunted by spirits of the victims of Belasco’s sadistic desires. Two previous investigations into the secrets of the house had ended in murder, suicide and insanity and it seems this one could end in the same fate when the individual weaknesses of the new group are quickly identified and prayed upon as the house physically and psychologically manipulates each of the inquisitive visitors. Originally published in 1971 this is one of Matheson’s most successful novels, and it was soon adapted for film. Matheson’s no-nonsense style of writing combined with a pacey story makes it an exciting page-turner that’s stood the test of time and become a classic scary read that even Stephen King calls “the scariest haunted house novel ever written”.

Heart-Shaped Box By Joe Hill With a fascination for collecting items of a macabre nature, selfcentred retired rock star Judas Coin can’t help himself when he hears that there’s a supposed ghost for sale on an internet auction site. An old man’s suit, in which the ghost apparently resides, arrives in a heart-shaped box and marks the beginning of a terrifying campaign to see Judas, and those close to him, killed. He soon discovers the spirit is that of a vengeful man named Craddock whose stepdaughter committed suicide after Judas had unceremoniously dumped her, and that his acquisition of the suit was indeed no coincidence. Judas and his current girlfriend Georgia travel to Florida to find Craddock’s remaining step-daughter in an attempt to stop the determined spectre, who follows their every frightened move at fast pace and with surprising plot twists. Hill’s clever characterisation manages to manipulate the reader into empathising with the protagonists, despite their initial unattractive personal traits, and has you believing with ease in Craddock’s eerie ethereal being. This was Hill’s first novel, which was met with huge acclaim as a true spine- tingling horror/thriller… so it was perhaps unsurprising when it eventually emerged some time later, and thankfully after Hill had proved his merit in his own right, that his father is none other than master horror writer Stephen King.

Reading Room You might want to double lock the doors and check under the bed before settling down for a spot of bedtime reading with any of these scary stories. With spooky Halloween celebrations being planned this month, we’ve selected some truly chilling tales to get you into the “spirit”.

The Woman in Black By Susan Hill Junior solicitor Arthur Kipps is summoned to attend the funeral of Alice Drablow, an elderly widow who lived alone at Eel Marsh House in the remote town of Crythin Gyfford, but he has no idea that the run-of-the-mill responsibility will result in a tragic and unnerving discovery. He spots a gaunt woman dressed in black at the funeral and notices children nearby staring at her. In the following days, as he sorts through Mrs Drablow’s papers at her desolate home, he endures a chilling series of unexplained noises, frightening occurrences and hauntings by the Woman in Black. One such event includes the sound of a horse-drawn cart and the desperate screams of a child. Kipps tries to find out more about this woman in an attempt to understand what’s happening but locals are fearful of sharing the story. Eventually Kipps finds out that, decades before, Alice Drablow’s sister Jennet had given birth out of wedlock. She had been forced to give up her son, Nathaniel, to Alice and her husband who raised the child as their own, with Jennet bound to keep the truth from the boy. However, Nathaniel was crossing the marsh one day when the pony and cart he was travelling in got bogged down. As Jennet watched helplessly from her window at Eel Marsh House, the cart sank beneath the surface, killing all on board and leaving Jennet bereft. After her own death later, her malevolent spirit returned to Crythin Gyfford and became known as the Woman in Black, whose ominous sighting would mark the death of a child. Inspired by classic gothic ghost stories, Susan Hill has written a chilling tale that repeatedly has your hair standing on end and manages to continue to haunt your thoughts long after the book is closed.

Most people becoming a self-made multi-millionaire at a relatively young age would be fairly satisfied with their life’s work – and be inclined to retire to the golf course or yacht. Or both. Robert Winsor did opt for such a life of leisure but he eventually realised he had more work to do: he wanted to become a multi-millionaire a second time round – but with a commitment to philanthropy rather than material pleasures.

aids, he has also purchased 19 buses to transport children to 20 special needs centres around Mallorca.

Today, Robert is just €37,000 away from realising his new dream of being a “multi-millionaire charity king”. Since organising his first eponymous charity golf event in Mallorca in 1999, he has raised €1,963,000 to help improve the quality of life of disadvantaged and underprivileged children on the island. Apart from hundreds of wheelchairs, walking machines, shower beds and other essential

Born on 10 August 1940, Robert Winsor showed great entrepreneurial initiative from an early age. As a young child, he moved with his family from Padstow (Cornwall) to London, where they opened a pub. At 18, he created a small disco above the pub, saved £100, found a shed and started making little wire display stands, and went around the shops selling them.

These efforts earned him an MBE in the Queen’s Honours List of 2005 and the honour of being named European Citizen of the Year by Calvià Town Hall in 2007. He is also an honorary life member of both Royal Bendinat Golf Club and Santa Ponça Country Club.

One day he bought a bar of chocolate, made a Catherine wheel, placed the bar of chocolate on the wheel – and wrote to Cadbury. “Bear in mind that this was 1960, and there was no point of sale then,” recalls Robert. “You went into shops and things were in drawers or on the shelves; they weren’t staring you in the face. I told Cadbury, ‘I’ve got this Catherine wheel that’s going to greatly increase the sales of your chocolates for kids.’” Cadbury were interested but they also revealed that they had just brought out the first plastic bag of sweets with a hole in them. They liked his fairground theme, they said, but would prefer a roundabout. Robert said he would make a prototype, and Cadbury told him they would be interested in a trial run of 10,000! Taken

aback, but undaunted, he explained he didn’t have the money to buy the steel so they offered to visit his “factory”. At the time, Robert had four boys working for him at a shop, so he enlisted his father’s darts team and, when the Cadbury buyer arrived, “had the boys packing things in boxes downstairs and unpacking them and sending them upstairs, and people moving around, moving them over there, putting that here, sort of walking around doing things”. Robert mentioned that there was a lovely Italian restaurant down the road, the buyer noted, “This looks fine”, Robert explained that he planned to expand on the strength of this order – and they adjourned for lunch. “So that was the first order and they were my biggest clients for the next 27 years.” With Cadbury as a client, others followed and at the age of 23 he had his first RollsRoyce; and six years later the Lamborghini concession in Alie Street in London. “It was a different kind of world then; people were rewarded for success. If you worked hard then you were rewarded. I was on a high; I loved it.” In 1971, he bought a mansion in Totteridge for £200,000 with the intention of doing it up and selling it, but he married

THE MAN BEHIND THE PENGUIN

wife number two, 1970 Miss Australia Valli Kemp, and decided to move in. He stayed there for 16 years, selling it 22 years ago for £2 million. At the time he had a fascination for birds (“feathered ones in the garden; the other ones inside the house”) and in his garden, extending over four acres (about one and a half hectares), had flamingos, hawks, cranes – and two types of penguin. He was surprised one day to find two penguin eggs in the garden (“You normally need quite a lot of penguins to get them agitated enough to have sex”) and, as mum and dad seemed so happy, decided to incubate them at home rather than hand them over to London Zoo. Thus was born Percy – the first penguin bred in captivity in the UK outside a zoo. The world’s press converged on the Winsor home, and the name stuck: Robert Winsor aka The Penguin. In 1988, he sold his business, divorced his third wife (singer Grace Kennedy), invested the £2 million he made on the sale of his house (17 per cent interest rates in those days), bought a boat and travelled to the Costa del Sol. This wasn’t an ideal place for boating, and when some friends suggested he try Mallorca he set off across the Mediterranean. He lived on the boat, a 17-metre 10-berther, for three months in Puerto Portals, bought an apartment, travelled to the US to play golf in the winters, and found himself returning to England less and less frequently. “If you like boating and you like golf this place is a paradise.”

Around this time, he also met María Jesús Laserna (from Spain’s Basque Country), and they have been together ever since (marrying last year). A few years later a friend, Malcolm Andrews, mentioned he was thinking about organising a golf day. Robert told him he had previously arranged “the biggest golf days, bar none” in the UK, with Ryder Cup players including Sam

32

Torrance and such top celebrities as Bruce Forsyth and Jimmy Tarbuck. He had first become involved in charity events when Tarbuck introduced him to the Variety Club Golfing Society in 1976, and he launched his own charity golf tournament in 1980 – purchasing more than 200 powered wheelchairs for handicapped children over the following eight years. In 1985, together with Dennis Taylor, Cliff Thorburn (whom he managed) and Willie Thorne, he also formed the World Snooker Golf Society. Robert told Malcolm that if he could raise the then equivalent of €10,000 from a sponsor, to cover flights and hotels, he (Robert) would arrange for 18 of his celebrity friends to come over for the event. “The record for an event then was €3,000,” Robert recalls, “and my first attempt (1999) raised €56,000!” At the time, says Robert, “Handicapped children were put in taxis and cars with a seat belt and by the time they arrived at school they were quite agitated; then they had to face that journey home again. They didn’t have anything like specialised buses like the Variety Club buy in England, so I bought my first bus, specially tailor-made with a power platform at the back, air-conditioning, music – and a penguin on it (the first “Penguin Bus). So I sort of revolutionised the transportation of disadvantaged and special needs children, taking them back and forth to school and taking them out at weekends. And now it’s a pleasure for them as against the ordeal it was before.” He went on to organise nine more events and for the last three (2006 to 2008) made an average of €260,000 from each. “In other words, for three years that’s €5,000 a week net, every single week – unheard of!” Unfortunately, the recession then struck, and the main sponsor, a real estate company, was unable to continue; but Robert has a new sponsor, albeit for a lower amount (“it’s a very difficult time for charities now, obviously”), and is planning the 11th event for May

next year. “We won’t be making a quarter of a million but if I can make €100,000 it’s €100,000 the kids would not have.” The traditional venue, Royal Bendinat, is under new ownership so he may have to find another golf course, and he will also be looking for sponsors (including for the gala dinner) when he starts work on the 2011 event towards the end of this year. “The big secret of my success is that in my last few events I had no outgoings so everything I was taking in was the bottom line and pure net profit for the kids. Hence the astronomical figures. “I was very proud, like anyone would be, to be a self-made millionaire from a hundred quid. Fine, lots of people have done that, but now I’m also – more or less – a multi-millionaire charity man. And that’s even more important. Harder by the way, much harder… asking people to give you money all the time. You hate to reach the stage where you walk into a restaurant and they think, ‘Christ, Robert’s coming in.’ I’m joking, of course. People are always very kind. In the earlier years, when I started here, I had to ring up and say, ‘Please, can I have a painting… is it possible to have dinner for four people in your restaurant… and I’ll put you on my website, and I’ll give you a place at my gala dinner, and I’ve got Jasper Carrott coming out and John Lodge from the Moody Blues. You give me something that I can get good money for, give it to me free, and depending on what it is I can always give something in return.’ And they think... that’s nice. In fact, in 2008, one top jewellery outlet actually phoned him, unsolicited. They had heard about his work over the years and wanted to donate a diamond necklace valued at €15,000. I sold it for €10,000; some charities don’t make €10,000 in total!” That same year, the last of 35 items auctioned off was a round of golf and lunch with Sergio García, which attracted a successful bid of €35,000. His lifestyle has enabled him to know the kind of wealthy guests required to make such

an event and auction a success, combined with the willingness of top celebrity friends to come out and support the event with their presence. “They don’t have to spend any money but they don’t receive any money. No one has ever asked me for one peseta, not for one penny.” Robert is also keen to stress that he doesn’t do his charity work “for money, or acclaim or reward. I want publicity because the more publicity I have the more attention I can draw to the plight of these children. People come to this island and they don’t realise about the Down Syndrome children, and children who have been abused, or have no parents, children who can’t walk, or who have special needs. The government won’t give them a walking machine or a shower chair. I buy all sorts of equipment that their parents, often single mothers, haven’t got the money for. The publicity draws attention to that.” As Mallorca’s charity auctioneer extraordinaire, Robert is also often asked to help other worthy causes. At the end of last month, for example, he presided over the auction at a gala dinner at Mood organised by a friend in aid of cystic fibrosis sufferers (his younger daughter, Natalie, a singer-actress who recently had the lead role of Carmen Diaz in the West End production of Fame, was due to perform as well); and he raises the auction gavel at a variety of smaller fund-raising events, including wine tastings. So, having turned 70 this past summer, does he ever think about slowing down? A medical condition earlier this year, which required hospitalisation, and a more recent ailment have encouraged him to take it a little easier (giving up his daily cigar, for example), but he still goes to the gym twice a week and plays golf regularly (handicap 18 – his lowest ever, at Wentworth, was nine). “I’m 80 kilos, just under six feet. I eat sensibly, very little bread and potatoes. I love salads! My lifestyle is sensible. I had a crazier lifestyle when I was young, like everybody. When you’ve got Rod Stewart coming to your house for the weekend to play snooker and you’re doing all sorts of strange things. And Keith Moon is at the bar serving drinks and…! I used to have the most amazing dinner parties at home, as you can imagine with those sorts of people. I’ve had all the trinkets, all the toys, the cars, the houses. But that was then and this is now. I’m delighted with my life. I’m delighted that I’m 70 and I’m fit and slim. Or I think I am! I’ve got two gorgeous daughters (and two grandchildren) and I’ve been with María for 18 years.” For the man who would be charity king – or already is – there is just one more paragraph to close the latest chapter on an extraordinary life. Well, two actually: €37,000 and a 20th Penguin Bus. Come next May, his happiness should be complete.

What is it you like most about living in Mallorca? The sun, the sea and the great food – and great golf. Your favourite place in Mallorca? At home, with my wife and my dogs. At lunchtime a nice refreshing rosado, and invariably Rioja tinto at night-time. How much time are you connected to the internet each day? Probably too long! I’ve been investing in – some would say playing – the Spanish stock market the past 22 years, just in a modest way. And I play backgammon on the internet every night before dinner. If you could arrange a dinner party with any three people of your choice, who would they be? I’ve had a dinner party with all three of them! Three you haven’t dined with? Jack Nicholson, love him to pieces; Jack Nicklaus, the greatest golfer of all time; Madonna. What word or phrase do you think your family and friends would use to define you? Effervescent. At home with...

Victoria Moore Often overshadowed by all the busy goings-on around the coast, the sleepy heart of Mallorca’s countryside hides away some of the island’s most precious gems. The home of natural beauty doyenne, Victoria Moore, is one such treasure.

Interview: Suzy Meiklejohn

As I attempt to follow the map Victoria sent me, I feel a growing concern that I’m seriously lost as I turn off the main road and onto a single dirt track. “What’s the landmark I’m looking for? Oh yes… pigs!” I duly make the turning after the pigs, feeling a little more reassured, while hoping they hadn’t just wandered into the wrong field and scuppered my map-reading skills. However, just as the track gets narrower still, with the foliage on either side striving to reach it’s opposite neighbour, I spot the secluded Mallorcan-style finca I’m looking for, nestled beneath the shady organic woodland canopy. In 1988 Victoria was invited to Mallorca for the opening party of a friend’s new bar. An avid traveller, she decided to make a holiday of it and stayed for two weeks. Those two weeks were to change her life. She fell in love, not only with the beautiful landscape, but also with the eclectic set of people she found here. “I met an incredibly interesting group of people all mixing together, from small children to 90-year-olds. I especially loved the old eccentric English expats who had settled here from India – boy, do they know how to party!” During those two weeks Victoria’s friend showed her a plot of land for sale in the countryside between Arta and Capdepera. There was nothing more than a run-down pig shed on it, but Victoria’s creative mind pictured the traditional-style finca she would build from scratch, so she purchased the land during that very visit. “Mallorca was so close to home but so different. I was living in London, but I wanted a place in the countryside. I could have bought a house in somewhere like Norfolk, but when I realised the travelling time would actually be about the same I thought, why not buy in Mallorca instead?” It may seem a rash decision, but Victoria Moore is one of those people with a can-do attitude. During the 1960s she lived in Lon-

34

don’s trendy Portobello Road in Notting Hill and worked at iconic fashion label Biba. Immersed in the epicentre of London’s fashion scene, her natural creativity was fuelled and she left Biba to begin designing, creating and selling her own fashion and interiors accessories from a stall at the hippy chic Kensington Market. Her career was to take an altogether different path though, when an American model agency discovered her and she embarked on two years modelling in the US, which she remembers as, “Big hair and lashes applied one-by-painstaking-one!” This adventure abroad sparked a wanderlust in Victoria that has lasted her whole life and is clearly evident from the global souvenirs of furniture and artworks displayed throughout her home and garden today. By 1975 Victoria had returned to London and opened a new store with a friend in the King’s Road, Chelsea. Miracles specialised in functional art for interiors, mixed with eclectic collections of trendy crafts and jewellery. They employed a team of skilled craftspeople designing and creating commissioned pieces and quickly gained an admirable reputation. The success of the London store led to the opening of gallery concessions in New York and LA. Several stunning pieces of furniture from Victoria’s Miracles store have now found a home in Mallorca, such as the intricately inlaid sofa and chair in her living room. By the early ‘80s the pressure and endless necessary socialising had lost its appeal and the wanderlust had returned. So when one of Miracles main clients, BBC Television’s props department, had a vacancy for a buyer, Victoria took the job, granting her the freedom and time to travel again. Her travels took her to India where she fell in love with the culture, the country and its traditions. This is where she found a passion

35

ISLAND CONNECTIONS Life & Living for traditional beauty practices which inspired her to attend courses in natural beauty, traditional remedies and the skincare benefits of plants and essential oils. “I was horrified when I read an article about what goes into beauty products so using what I’d learned I began to produce my own. It was just for myself at first, but then it expanded to friends and family until eventually I decided to pro-

inside or out, there are so many interesting features to notice. “One of my favourite places to find things is Art Ambient in Arta. They have the most wonderful pieces,” Victoria enthuses. The bespoke “pool diamond” designed by Frank Poppner is especially unusual too. A shiny dome coated in 24-carat gold and surrounded by iridescent mosaic tiles edged in stainless steel, it sits at the bottom

duce them commercially.” And so the Victoria Moore collection was born with the first range of naturally scented, clean-burning, soya wax candles. Her home is an oasis reflecting this passion for a healthy, natural, sustainable life: the organic vegetable garden and abundant fruit trees not only provide food but also inspiration for her beauty products; the terrace roof is made from nearby riverbank reeds; natural materials are everywhere such as gnarled pieces of drift wood used to craft a beautiful bathroom mirror; and an old dead apricot tree in the garden provided wood for the living room cupboards. Victoria employs local craftspeople for all her projects and refurbishments. She loves to find items from salvage yards and explained, “I found all the doors and windows from salvage yards and then built the house around them. They dictated the size and height of many areas of the house.” Victoria also likes to collect interesting pieces of art from many of the island’s talented local artists. “How do you find these talented artists and craftspeople?” I asked, “Oh, we’re just attracted to each other,” she replies with a wry smile. Surrounded by the beauty of nature, artwork and cherished memories the house has a calming, peaceful ambience, delicately scented throughout with the natural aromas of Victoria Moore candles. Wherever you look,

of the pool casting sparkles through the water whenever the sun shines. With the finca appearing to be finished, and what was once the pig shed now transformed into a rustic one-bedroom casita, Victoria still describes the property as a “work in progress”. Her next plan is to build an eco-house near the stream, where her grand-daughter and Victoria Moore business partner (also called Victoria) will eventually come to live with her young family, ensuring that generations to come will enjoy the extraordinary fruits of Victoria’s hard work, enthusiasm and passion. Originally only sold online, Victoria Moore products will soon be available on the island too. Interested stockists should contact Mary Linehan: Tel. ALEXANDRA BURKE participated in the successful 2009 Little Tee campaign and is back on board again this year. Commenting on her shoes (pictured in the middle), Alexandra says, “I loved designing my Little Tee last year so I jumped at the chance to get involved and show my support again, especially as it involved creating my very own pair of shoes! My family has been touched by breast cancer so I really understand the importance of the work Breast Cancer Care does for women with the disease. My shoe design was inspired by the butterfly – it represents new beginnings and freedom. It’s also a bit of a good luck charm for me too. I think we all need a bit of luck sometimes so I’ve tried to create a pair of luscious-looking lucky shoes for all the ladies out there.”

Designer style with a charitable edge TO COINCIDE WITH BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH VARIOUS RETAILERS ARE LAUNCHING LIMITED EDITION PRODUCTS TO RAISE MONEY FOR BREAST CANCER CARE. Dorothy Perkins have launched their Stand Tall campaign, which consists of an exclusive, limited edition range of shoes designed by Kelly Osborne, Alexandra Burke and Sophie Ellis Bextor, inspired by their own personalities and style. The shoes retail at £45, with a £10 donation from each sale going directly to Breast Cancer Care. There is also a range of T-shirts designed by up and coming Spanish designer Manuel Rebollo, retailing at £20 with £5 going straight to the charity. The money raised from the collection will enable Breast Cancer Care to continue to provide free expert information and skilled emotional support to anyone affected by the disease. What better way to justify a bit of a splurge than doing it in the name of charity?

KELLY OSBORNE

SOPHIE ELLIS BEXTOR comments on her fabulous shoes (pictured on the right), “It seems everyone knows someone who has been touched by breast cancer. For me it was my maternal grandmother who sadly lost her battle with cancer when I was just 11. I have very fond memories of my lovely grandma. When Dorothy Perkins approached me about the Breast Cancer Care campaign I thought it was brilliant, as one thing I know for sure is that a girl can never have too many pairs of shoes. How fantastic to have the perfect excuse to treat yourself to another pair. You’ll look great and be supporting a wonderful cause. My shoes are designed to look fun yet sophisticated and the heel is perfect for dancing the night away on. I love them so much I’d be happy to wear them when I perform – I always love a sparkly shoe on stage.”

46

is supporting this fashion partnership by designing a pair of pink and silver toe-capped shoes covered in gun-metal studs (pictured on the left). Talking about her design, Kelly says, “There’s no denying it: I love fashion! So it was really exciting to be able to design my own pair of shoes. The inspiration for my design was the colour pink as it’s the colour you associate with the breast cancer cause. Breast Cancer Care is a charity that’s close to my heart as I know what great support they offer to the whole family, all of those who are affected by this disease.”

Both of these exclusive ranges will be available online from dorothyperkins.com from the beginning of October.

Stunning and powerful musical extravaganza

society

Photos: Oliver Neilson

Thousands of people from across the island flocked to Palma’s ONO Stadium last month to witness exceptional performances by two of the music industry’s biggest names. Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, accompanied by the Balearic Symphony Orchestra and Balearic University Choir, began the show as the sun set and the stars emerged. He shared the stage with Italian soprano group Div4s, and performed duets with Spanish soprano Saioa Hernandez and most notably with Tony and Grammy award-winning American Heather Headley, who was a surprise treat of the night. By the end of Bocelli’s awe-inspiring set, the sheer emotion and power of the performances had tears flowing all around the stadium and standing ovations called the outstanding tenor back to the stage for more than one encore. In complete contrast, when Sir Elton John took his position at the piano and the spectacular light show began, the intense atmosphere was instantly lifted as the crowd erupted into song. The talented showman gave a superbly energetic performance of a string of classic favourites from his incredible 43-year repertoire, providing an incredible feel-good finale to an historic musical extravaganza.

PORSCHE SPEEDSTER

by Marc McCafferty

Blasting from the past

Stereotypically the term “mid-life crisis” tends to conjure up images related to desperate middle-aged men reviving their stonewashed, spray-on Levis from the ‘60s. Although they may have been groovy back in the day, some things should remain in the past. We have all encountered this longing reminiscence in some form or another and it seems motoring giant Porsche are currently enduring their own version – the only difference is that a Porsche midlife crisis is very, very cool. Fortunately Porsche do not own any illfitting denim; what they do have is a back catalogue of sleek and sexy sports cars. Only a few months after updating the retro duck-tailed 911 Sport Classic, the German giants have revived another legendary model from the past – the chop-top Speedster. To be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show

56

this month, this is the first Speedster version of the 911 in nearly 20 years, and aesthetically it seems the chop-top has aged beautifully. In a bid not to upset the Speedster fan base, Porsche have ensured that this reincarnation hasn’t lost any of the individual styling that gave the marque its identity back in the ‘50s. Every Porsche Speedster was traditionally distinguished by its shortened windscreen and sleek tail, and the new 911 likewise features a 60 millimetres lowered and raked windscreen and the characteristic “double-bubble” hard-cover for the manual soft-top. The parallels to its predecessor do not end there – there are even the ‘80s style black stone guards on the rear arches. The new 911 has adapted its stance from the wide-set Carrera 4 framework – an increase of 44 millimetres in the rear width of the car.

57

PRESTIGE MOTORING Life & Living

Although the style of the new 911 Speedster references many contemporary re-interpretations of the classic Porsche Speedster, the addition of the rear-engined chassis seems to be adapted from the current 911 as well. The 3.8-litre flat six has been tuned to deliver 408 hp (300 kW), 23 hp more than in the 911 Carrera S. With average fuel consumption (NEDC) of 27.43 mpg (10.3 litres/100 km), the new Speedster uses no more fuel than the standard 911 Carrera S Cabriolet – we all have Porsche Intelligent Performance2 software to thank for that.

There is also a crisp seven-speed PDK double clutch gearbox with steering wheel paddles and ceramic composite brakes, all as standard (we would not expect anything less from the artisans over at Porsche Exclusive, the team behind the Speedster revival). The exterior styling may raise a few eyebrows. The paintwork has been developed

exclusively for the Speedster and is aptly named “Pure-Blue”. While this colour may be slightly hit and miss with its potential owners it does offer an intriguing contrast with the black detailing – of the headlight surrounds, the tinted front lights and, of course, the monstrous 20” alloys. If “PureBlue” is not your thing, then Porsche have offered to change it to the Carrera white at no extra cost., As a further tribute to the iconic 356 model of 1953, Porsche Exclusive are set to only release 356 Speedsters onto the market. However, it is clear why the demand has been restricted when glancing at the price tag – set at nearly €170,000 this will be the second most expensive marque Porsche have ever produced.

The Speedster is set to be snapped up very quickly amongst loyal 356 fans and motoring enthusiasts alike. Also, it seems as though Porsche have inadvertently shed some light on the intrigue surrounding the mid-life crisis – you need millions in investment, a top team of advisors and a long, long string of previous successes to even remotely pull one off. Might be best to go hunting for those jeans now. PRICE: €170,000 POWER: 408bhp TOP SPEED: TBC ACCELERATION: 0-62mph in 4.3sec FUEL ECONOMY: 27.43mpg (EU Urban) CO2 EMISSIONS: TBC

Restaurante El Patio

Indulge your senses Review by Sarah Hughes

The stylish Restaurante El Patio, located on the main road between Andratx village and Puerto de Andratx, has been welcomed with open arms by those looking for culinary perfection served in a subtle and classy atmosphere. Having recently relocated from Camp de Mar it hasn’t taken long for word to spread across the island about the tantalising food on offer here, and on the Friday night in question the place is fully booked. The passion and sheer determination that has been poured into this place by owners Manuela Aichinger, Jens Krumbiegel and Emmerich Reutter is evident everywhere you look, from its décor and lighting to the presentation and quality of the food. The main restaurant is thoughtfully decorated with cream furnishings and a tasteful art collection, creating a gentle and romantic ambience for diners to slide effortlessly into. Upon arriving we’re greeted by the immaculately presented Manuela, who has us seated with a glass of cava in

60

hand and a smile on our faces within minutes. Every evening from Thursday through to Monday there are two set evening menus on offer and if you still can’t find anything to tempt you there El Patio’s “classical dishes” are also available. Being the fickle souls that we are, this is what we decide to order from. Having made our selection we are immediately presented with dainty little cups of what turns out to be a delicious light and creamy potato soup, served with a slice of apple wrapped in pancetta, which wets our appetite

beautifully. Following the soup, our starters of swordfish carpaccio with dried squid and a bresola and buffalo mozzarella salad arrive; both dishes look almost too pretty to eat. The swordfish carpaccio in particular is phenomenal and proves to be one of those dishes that, with every mouthful, you discover a slightly different flavour. Between meals we are presented with a small parsley and lemon sorbet, which cleanses the palette perfectly. Next come the mains and my partner opts for a New York strip steak. After one mouthful he declares that it’s the best steak he’s had on the island. A quick check with Manuela confirms that the steak has indeed been imported from the US to ensure the quality and authenticity of the flavour. I cleverly opt for a fillet of hake with a fantastic rouille sauce, which is delicious yet not quite as filling, thus enabling me to indulge in the tempting dessert menu. I order the dark chocolate brownie with pina colada ice cream, with two spoons to share. However, I can confirm that absolutely no sharing took place after I tasted the incredibly rich and smooth chocolate brownie. To compliment the cuisine there is an incredibly extensive selection of international wines. In addition to German, French and Italian white and red wines, diners are also offered wines from South Africa, the US, Switzerland and of course Spain. The sheer extensity and variety

of the bottles on offer is a clear indicator of how seriously they take this business of dining; every plate has a perfectly matched bottle to accompany it. The overall impression that you’re left with after dining at El Patio is one of impeccable taste and luxury. Every minute detail has been carefully considered, from the artistic table presentation to the “water menu” on offer, making El Patio the perfect place to indulge yourself or a loved one.

Verdict:

Beautiful ambience, attentive staff and fantastic cuisine. Ideal for a special occasion or just to indulge your senses!

Edesia

By Laura Penn Photography: Fred Simon

LAST MONTH THE ML&S TEAM HEADED TO PALMA TO SEEK OUT A RESTAURANT NAMED AFTER A GODDESS, SITUATED NEAR A CHURCH… AND WITH A HEAVENLY TIRAMSU.

The menu del día is served Monday to Friday from 12 noon till 4pm and consists of three courses plus coffee, for €10.50. The options for a starter were international: nachos with cheese from Mexico; French onion soup from, well, France; and ham salad from anywhere in the world. The nachos arrived with homemade salsa, and the soup was given the approval of one of the team who is an actual Frenchman! Main courses on offer included chicken in pepper sauce, fish in fennel sauce and pork loin. Again, the emphasis was on home cooking with authentic sauces and real chips. Finally, if you had room left after the good-sized portions, there was melon and watermelon dessert, fresh pineapple, ice cream or tiramisu, followed by delicious coffee. Edesia’s menu del día really is incredible value considering the quality and generous size of the dishes, the excellent service and the tasteful surroundings. There really is something for everyone’s tastes and we wish Nick and Benn every success with their restaurant and bar. It is well worth experiencing. As they say, when in Rome do as the Romans do… when in Palma, pop into Edesia! Edesia Restaurant and Bar Calle Andrea Doria 21, Palma Tel. 971 73 10 30 Closed Saturdays

exceptional service superb location What have the Romans ever done for us? Well, they knew a thing or two those Romans. They knew how to wage war, make love and throw a good feast! The Roman goddess of food was Edesia and that is the name of the new(ish) restaurant in Palma where you will find food worthy of a Bacchanalian banquet! Opened in April 2010, Edesia is a converted house where you will find a warm welcome, good food and a relaxed atmosphere. Situated near the Anglican Church, it is has a loyal following of worshippers who have discovered this little gem in the suburbs of the Mallorcan capital. It’s a long way from Sheffield but friends Nick Clayton and Benn Haselhirst have created an eatery that any Yorkshire man could be proud of. They both worked at Binnacles in Puerto Portals before starting their own venture, and chef

Benn has used his experience to create a menu of popular dishes for Edesia. The first concern was finding the place but this turned out to be remarkably easy. You can approach it either from the Paseo Marítimo (turn left at Cappuccinos and it is 10 minutes walk on the left) or from the Via Centura (take the Son Dureta turn-off and it is three minutes drive on the right). Situated on the corner of a main road, the bar and restaurant covers the entire ground floor of a converted house. Maybe that is why it has a homely, comfortable feel? A relaxed welcome awaited us from Nick, who quickly settled us in our seats and produced water and wine. There is a choice of three areas to sit: the open outside terrace, the cozy bar or the large covered indoor terrace. We chose the latter, where we had plenty of room to spread out.

FLAVOURS OF THE MED Life & Living By Gillaine Hathaway

We are what we eat ... That wise old saying, “We are what we eat”, is so true when it comes to Mediterranean food, whether we live in the Balearics or the rest of Spain. The fame of the health qualities of Mediterranean food is due to the traditions of hearty peasant fare rooted in local ingredients. In times gone by the dishes where based on what the housewife had growing outside her door. But over the centuries this has been influenced by explorers who set sail to discover new lands and brought back new tastes and flavours for those of us living in European lands. These include the arrival of the potato. The potato, now a staple of so many Mediterranean dishes, originated in the Andes mountains in South America some 7,000 years ago. But it was not until 1570 that it arrived in Europe after the Conquistadors tramped through Peru in 1537. The same is true of the tomato, whose origins go back to the early Aztecs in 700 AD, but it did not arrive in Europe until the 16th century when the explorers brought it back home. Though the tomato season runs from the beginning of June to the end of November, this luscious and versatile red vegetable seems to be available in supermarkets all year round due to modern-day farming and shipping methods. But for the Spanish housewife who in Octobers past was busy planning for the winter ahead, drying and preserving whatever fruit and vegetables she could and hanging that all-important leg of ham to mature into a Christmas delicacy, now is the time to make full use of the tomato. Mallorcan cuisine, based on pork, fish and vegetables with the generous use of garlic and olive oil, is hearty peasant fare steeped in tradition and rooted in local ingredients such as this Mallorcan-style ratatouille – which can be served as a starter or also in larger quantities as a main dish if you prefer or are entertaining vegetarians.

TUMBET

(serves four)

Ingredients: 400 gr all-purpose potatoes peeled and finely sliced 400 gr aubergines finely sliced 2 red peppers cut into long thin strips 5 tablespoons olive oil Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

For the sauce: 500 gr tomatoes peeled and finely chopped 3 cloves garlic finely sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 sprigs oregano

• First prepare the sauce by heating the olive oil in a large pan and lightly frying the garlic just until the cloves are beginning to turn golden. • Add the tomatoes and oregano. • Bring to the boil, stirring well, then turn the heat down, cover the saucepan and leave to simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. • Heat the oven to 180ºC. • In a frying pan heat two tablespoons of the olive oil and gently fry the potato slices in batches, until golden on both sides. Put into a baking dish and season with salt and pepper. • Add the remaining olive oil to the frying pan and fry the aubergines until well browned. Arrange over the potatoes and season. • Fry the red peppers and then layer on top of the aubergines. • Spoon the tomato sauce over the top of the vegetables and bake for 20 minutes in the oven until bubbling.

64

• Remove and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving with some crusty bread.

Now back to the tomato, which is a star ingredient. Throughout the summer months the Mallorcan housewife would be drying tomatoes in the sun to store for use in winter months. Now, of course, we can dry tomatoes in the oven. It really increases the flavour and can be added into any dish which uses the basic tomato. But how about taking advantage of the last of the fresh tomatoes and preparing the following tomato sauce, which can be stored in the freezer for use throughout the winter. Incidentally, if you do not have any sun-dried tomatoes you can substitute a tin of chopped tomatoes. Tomato Sauce Ingredients: 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 medium onions and 2 cloves garlic peeled and finely chopped 1 teaspoon salt 1½ kg fresh tomatoes skinned and finely chopped and generous handful dried chopped tomatoes 1 teaspoon paprika (pimentón dulce) 1 teaspoon sugar 1 tablespoon fresh basil 1 chicken stock cube or 1 tablespoon powdered chicken stock

• Cover the bottom of a heavy pan with oil, heat and add the onions. Sprinkle on the salt and stir in the garlic. • When transparent add the fresh tomatoes, paprika and sugar. Stir in well and cook until soft. • Then add the dried tomatoes or a tin of tomatoes, the stock cube and the basil, and simmer for at least an hour until the sauce has reduced by nearly half. • “Finish” by adding freshly ground black pepper and more salt (if required), a generous tablespoon of virgin olive oil, two or three crushed garlic cloves and six torn basil leaves. Stir in well and cook for a further 10 minutes.

And now for a touch of naughtiness… how about some home-made ice cream! The following recipe does not need an ice cream maker and keeps in the freezer. All you need to do is remove the ice cream from the freezer for 20 minutes or so and keep in the fridge, and then scoop out whatever you need. Return the rest of the ice cream to the freezer for the next time you are tempted. ORANGE OR LEMON SHERBERT (serves four to six) • In one bowl whisk together: 2 small cartons natural yoghourt 2 generous teaspoons runny honey 8 tablespoons icing sugar 1 teaspoon grated orange or lemon rind • In another bow whisk together until stiff and in peaks: 2 egg whites pinch of salt • In a third bowl whip 150 ml of cream until stiff. • Add the egg whites to the yoghurt mixture and fold in the whipped cream. • Put into a plastic container and freeze. Once you have tried this recipe I guarantee you will make double quantities! It is great any time but especially for a dinner party, as it goes with so many other desserts such as chocolate cake or fruit pie.

Wine

of the Month

Winemaker, viticulturist, aficionado…

Andrés Gelabert was born in Mallorca but raised in southern California where his love for wine began. Gaining valuable experience from the wine industry in California and Texas, Andrés returned to Mallorca in 2000 to begin plans to build a winery. Currently he is the director of Bodegas Ángel in Santa María del Camí.

Wine: L’Ergull 2009 Type: Wooded white wine Winery: Mortix Website: vinyesmortitx.com Winemaker: Aurelie Mercier Location: Escorca, Mallorca Composition: Malvasias 60%; Chardonnay 30%; Riesling 10% Source of grapes: The grapes are located in the mountain range of Serra Tramunta, which results in a unique microclimate for the grapes. The grapes are situated at 400 metres above sea level, the highest vineyard height in Mallorca. The vines face northwards to an ocean view and are surrounded on three sides by rocky hills. Winemaking process: Mortix reserves the best Malvasia, Chardonnay and Riesling for elaboration of this wine. The grapes are collected and pressed immediately. The grape juice is allowed to settle and then it is racked to French oak barrels to begin fermentation. Once the fermentation has concluded the wine remains in the barrels for three to four months. Batonnage is applied regularly during the barrel ageing. Batonnage is a technique to maintain the lees (dead yeast cells) in suspension and not at the bottom of the barrel. The goal of batonnage is make the texture of the wine denser and help the integration of the wood. Description: The colour of the wine is yellow with some green tones. It is clean and with a bright finish. The aroma of the wine is of toasted almonds, butter and hints of citric. It has a hefty body and a long finish. Serve with: The wine should be chilled but not in excess. The recommended serving temperature is 12-14C. It can be served with meats such as duck, turkey, pork and sweet and sour dishes. Wine notes: Bodega Mortix is a fabulous and unique part of Mallorca. It is truly a great day excursion to visit the bodega. I recommend a visit during the hot months because it can become quiet cool. It is usual in the winter months to have snow-covered vines. Mortix on average is two to seven degrees cooler than the rest of Mallorca. This results in Mortix having slower ripening grapes and it is therefore usually the last in Mallorca to finish harvesting. Available to buy at: Most specialty stores… Es bon Recor (Palma), Vinoteca Son Vivot (Palma), Isla Catavinos (Palma), Angel Mallorca (Soller) and at the winery itself, where a tasting is offered.

Golf course of the month

Culinary Nights.

by Mark “tiger” Mccafferty

Made by

SON GUAL

IT’S FAIR TO SAY THAT WE ARE SPOILT FOR CHOICE ON THE ISLAND WHEN IT COMES TO PICKING A GOLF COURSE. HOWEVER, AMIDST THE ABUNDANCE OF QUALITY COURSES ON DISPLAY HERE, THERE IS ONE THAT IS SAID TO REIGN SUPREME, ETCHING ITS PLACE IN TO THE TOP 100 GOLF COURSES OF EUROPE – THE ILLUSTRIOUS SON GUAL.

Let yourself enchant by the tepid summer nights in Camp de Mar. From May 3rd until October 31st 2010 a varied culinary theme night expects you every evening from 7.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. at our poolrestaurant. Monday / Brazilian Night This evening we move to Brazil ... with the authentic “Rodizió” food and Brazilian live music.

Simply the best Among the mainly traditional course layouts in Mallorca, Son Gual is rumored to offer something different. The design is said to be more innovative, non-traditional and at times downright sadistic. There are waterfalls, over 1,000 olive trees, 66 bunkers and greens designed for the most anti-social of pin positions. As it had been sculpted by German three-time amateur champion Thomas Himmel, I knew a challenge was lying ahead. It was clear that Son Gual like to do things differently from the offset – I was offered the choice of a buggy or a Segway as my transport options on arrival. I decided on the buggy for today, as I was fairly confident that a combination of 66 bunkers, vast expanses of water and my first Segway outing wasn’t about to be a match made in heaven. With four lakes in play on the front nine alone, my buggy decision seemed to be a good one – it is just a shame my club selection had not been as well planned. After the first three holes, I was yet to hit a fairway. I had, however, landed in sand on three of the five holes. Himmel seems to be very good at placing his bunkers – if you are slightly off-centre with your tee shot you are penalised. The greens

did not offer much solace either – long manicured aprons guard the putting surface, often enticing your approach to spin back off the green. Although I was indulging almost every obstacle on the first few holes, I remained surprisingly upbeat. The sand I had landed in was soft and granular; the fringe I had spun back to was perfectly cut and well-watered; even the rough that I frequented was so lush and springy that I barely yearned for the fairway at all.

Tuesday / American BBQ Juicy grilled steaks, a variety of grilled fish and an authentic American buffet.

36 € p. p. / Buffet excl. drinks It wasn’t until the 6th hole that I finally found my feet. At 492 metres this was no walkover, but at last my drive had found the short grass. After carrying 254 metres (mostly water) and negotiating a fearsome headwind, I was left with a further 240 metres to an elevated green guarded by a bunker – not the reward I was expecting after my first “golf” shot of the day. However, staying positive paid off as my 3-wood found the front apron, my proceeding chip sought out the hole and finally my tap-in secured birdie. Maybe there was hope for this round after all. The 9th quickly brought me back to earth. At 200 metres into the wind, this was a real test of a par-3. I started the ball right, in an attempt to reduce my chances of a wet landing on the left; but, as seems to be the par for this course, avoiding one obstacle landed me in another – bunker number five. However, by this point I was more at home in the sand than David Hasselhoff and my lofty chip landed only a few feet shy of the hole – a sandy par and a sigh of relief. The back nine is host to some beautiful holes. The 14th has two fairway options – the lay up on the left is the sensible option but this brings the left-hand bunkers into

Wednesday / Sushi Night We expect you with a varied sushi station.

14 € p. p. / Selection of Sushi play on the approach. The tiger line requires a very solid hit and a carry over sand of around 250 metres. The rewards for this route are greater: just a flick into an un-protected green and a great chance of birdie. This hole really sums up the Jekyll and Hyde personalities of Son Gual and highlights one of the facets that make playing this course so difficult – indecision. Naming one outstanding hole at the beautiful Son Gual is difficult – however, for me it has to be the 18th. The view from the tee is simply magnificent. There is water in play from the start to the end of this hole, snaking from the left to the right of the fairway before hoarding in mass on the right side of the green. The stream cuts the fairway into two halves, meaning there are no short cuts in play here. To reach the green in two you have to be brave and/or have a steady supply of balls – you’ll be carrying two lots of water and an array of sand and rough before you reach the desired destination. This hole really embodies the risk-reward philosophy of Son Gual; unfortunately on this occasion, after risking, the only reward I received was an unsightly 7 on my scorecard and a cold beer at the clubhouse… until next time Son Gual.

Verdict: The undisputed king of courses in Mallorca. From the layout, to the condition, to the playability – a perfect 10.

Golf lesson 4

pitching This month will sadly be my last writing for Mallorca Life & Style magazine, as from 4 October I will start my new position as general manager of the Santiburi Golf Resort in Koh Samui, Thailand. I have been on the island of Mallorca for almost four years and I will leave with a heavy heart but the lure of this new position was too much to refuse, so my family and I are off for our new challenge and hopefully one day we will meet again, maybe in Koh Samui. Everyone is welcome to drop by and say hello; the first beer is on me! The last lesson for the short game is on pitching, possibly one of the hardest as the movement is certainly more complicated than that of putting and chipping. The biggest difference between chipping and pitching is that with chipping I do not use my wrists, whereas in pitching I use my wrists on the backswing to create more power. Firstly, when do I need to pitch? Two reasons: number one is when I am too far from the flag to chip the ball; or, secondly, when my ball is near the green but lying in thick rough. The technique for both is the same but the set-up is different. Let’s start with pitching from a greater distance where chipping is not possible. Set-up is the main problem for many golfers, as they bring the ball back in their stance and move their weight to the left, but this is not needed for a normal pitch. Instead keep your weight in the middle and also have the ball exactly in the middle of your feet. The movement on the backswing is similar to that of chipping to start with, and then slowly start to hinge your wrists.

Derek McKenzie has been contributing these articles as director of golf at Robinson Club Cala Serena. The club has a 24-bay driving range open to everyone, with no range fee; and a custom-built short game area. Lessons are available every day in English or German.

70

Robinson Club Cala Serena Tel. (+34) 971 169 312 robinson-ep.com / robinson.de / tartangolfmallorca.com

How much backswing is all to do with how far you want to hit the ball!. When the desired backswing is reached swing down, releasing the wrists through the ball, but be careful not to let the club head overtake the hands as this will create a thinned or topped shot. The finish should the same as the chip finish; the elbows and wrists should remain straight, with both feet still on the ground and your spine remaining in the original angle. The ball should now fly farther than a chip shot but is a little harder to control. The second pitch shot is from nearer to the green but from thick rough. The reason we need to pitch is that with a chip the club comes down too flat and with little power so the club head will decelerate and stop in the long grass behind the ball. What we need then is some power and also a steeper angle to the ball. To do this we firstly move the ball nearer to the right foot and move the body weight to the left; this will give us a steeper downswing to the back of the ball. The power will come automatically from using the wrists on the backswing. The biggest mistake for many golfers is that they then try to lift the ball out of the rough by bending their elbows through the impact or by trying to flick their wrists through impact, but this means you will not come under the ball; so instead you should try to follow through as much as possible with the arms and wrists straight. You will find this hard in the beginning as the club head will stick in the ground after impact because it comes down so steep, but do not worry as hopefully the ball is already on its way to the flag!

As well as being high in fiber and low in fat, figs are a fruit source of calcium, which promotes bone health and weight management, helps prevent osteoporosis and kidney stones, regulates blood pressure, and helps to prevent hypertension and cancers of the colon, rectum and prostate. Figs also contain the trace mineral manganese; this not only keeps your bones strong and healthy, but it helps your body synthesise fatty acids and cholesterol, maintains normal blood sugar levels, promotes optimal function of your thyroid gland and helps to maintain the function of your nervous system, as well as protecting your cells from free-radical damage. You probably do not think about the leaves of the fig tree as an edible part of a fig. However, in some cultures fig leaves are a common part of the menu, and for good reason. The leaves of the fig have repeatedly been shown to have anti-diabetic properties and are said to be able to reduce the amount of insulin needed by people with diabetes who require insulin injections. In one study, a liquid extract made from fig leaves was simply added to the breakfast of insulin-dependent diabetic subjects in order to produce this insulin-lowering effect. A few quick serving ideas…

Staying fit ... and happy

• When preparing oatmeal or any other whole grain breakfast porridge, add some dried or fresh figs. • Poach figs in juice or red wine and serve with yogurt or frozen desserts. • Add quartered figs to a salad of fennel, arugula and shaved Parmesan cheese. • Fresh figs stuffed with goat’s cheese and chopped almonds can be served as hors d’oeuvres or desserts.

Lower your blood pressure with fruit and veg

jumping rope It’s fun, you can do it anywhere, any time, it’s free and it burns fat quickly… jumping rope burns 177 calories in 15 minutes!

In a recent study by the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) one group ate servings of fruits and vegetables in place of snacks and sweets, and also ate low-fat dairy food. This diet delivered more potassium, magnesium and calcium. Another group ate a “usual” diet low in fruits and vegetables, with a fat content like that found in the “average American diet”. After eight weeks, the group that ate the enhanced diet lowered their blood pressure by an average of 5.5 points (systolic) over 3.0 points (diastolic).

SWEET AND SOUR FIG CHUTNEY 1 tbsp oil A few sprigs of chopped fresh coriander or ¼ tbsp dried ¼ tbsp cumin seeds ¼ tbsp cardamom ½ tbsp cayenne pepper ½ tbsp cinnamon 1½ cups diced figs, stems removed ¼ cup dried currants or raisins ¼ cup diced scallions 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar ¾ cups honey ½ tspn salt, plus more to taste

Preparation: 1. Heat oil in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. 2. Add remaining ingredients and, stirring often, let simmer until cooked down to thick syrup, about 10-15 minutes.

FIG, WATERMELON AND GINGER SMOOTHIE 5 small frozen figs (freeze fresh figs to use in smoothies) ½ cup frozen watermelon Sprinkling of fresh ginger 1 scoop vanilla whey protein isolate powder 2 egg whites Liquidise on high until light and fluffy.

Fat-burning exercises

Fresh fruit and vegetables are an excellent source of potassium, a mineral that helps to lower and control blood pressure by eliminating salt. Many people may have high blood pressure because a typical western diet does not contain enough fruits and vegetables (and therefore could be low in potassium) but they consume high amounts of processed food, which are high in sodium (salt).

Figs are in season – stock up and freeze

Mohammed Ali could skip for 16 minutes continuously and, although that is a feat beyond the cardiovascular ability of most people, jumping rope is something you can build up endurance for over time. Skipping is an ideal fat-burning activity almost anyone can do, anywhere. Going on a trip where there are no gyms or training equipment? Take your skipping rope. Making sure you pick the right rope: • It is important that the rope is heavy; light ropes are useless. • Choose a rope that suits your height. You can determine this by standing on the centre of the rope – if the handles reach your armpits it is suitable. • Your jump should be about an inch or two (two and a half to five centimetres) off the ground. Use your toes and the balls of your feet, and keep your knees soft. • Don’t use your whole arm to turn the rope; use your wrists instead. Hold your elbows tight to the body. Keep your eyes fixed on a spot in front of you – that’s called spotting. Now turn up the music and go!

Make sure you are getting enough protein Protein is essential to the functioning of our bodies; it helps maintain muscle mass and prevents the inevitable muscle wasting that increases with age. Lack of good quality protein affects everything from our immune systems (you get ill more frequently) to our brains, our height and stature (shrinking and bad posture) and our metabolism – i.e. how many calories you burn every day. Good protein sources include free-range eggs and organic low fat, moist meats and game, wild fish, fermented tofu, live yoghurts, nuts seeds and sprouted seeds and grains. A good way to supplement your protein intake is to take a high-quality powdered source of whey protein isolate; you can add this to one of my smoothie recipes as a post workout shake or a snack during the day. This helps to keep insulin levels stabilised, keeping energy levels up, and also increases the metabolism. Whey protein isolate is a mixture of proteins isolated from whey, the liquid material created as a by-product of cheese production. Some preclinical studies in rodents have suggested that whey protein may possess anti-inflammatory or anti-cancer properties. The effects of whey protein on human health are of great interest and are currently being investigated as a way of reducing disease risk, as well as a possible supplementary treatment for several diseases. Whey protein is commonly marketed and ingested as a dietary supplement, and various health claims have been attributed to it in the alternative medicine community. Although whey proteins are responsible for some milk allergies, the major allergens in milk are the caseins.

Beauty secrets of the stars...

with Allegra Curtis

This month we take a look at some of our favourite stars and how, with a little inside knowledge from the experts, achieving red carpet glamour is within anyone’s reach... eva mendes

Smouldering Latina

Lily Cole

English Rose At the tender age of 21 Lily Cole is the perfect English rose ripened with an extraordinary and ethereal beauty. She is not only smart but also disciplined when it comes to beauty, admitting to a stringent regime of cleansing, toning and moisturising with products by London-based company Fresh. When she shares her beauty secrets she has professed to using Soy Facial Cleanser to wash, Rose Marigold Floral Water to tone and oil-free Umbrian Clay Moisturiser for hydration. They are all remarkable products that can also work for you.

Eva Mendes is a goddess in human form. Aside from her obvious beauty and sex appeal, she definitely has that rare wow factor. She embodies a beauty you can touch, feel and see. Adding to her overall appeal is the fact that, despite being the sex kitten next door, with her smouldering smoky eyes and caramel skin, Eva is the kind of girl you could see yourself sharing a cold beer with on a hot Sunday afternoon. As for beauty secrets, does she really need any? The truth is we all need a little frosting on the cake. Eva Mendes has admitted that one of her beauty secrets is drinking three litres of water with lemon a day. Looking at her I would say, ladies, let’s start doing the same! Her skin is supple, flawless and oh so smooth, and of course it helps that she is from Cuban decent – making her a true Latina beauty.

I believe that it is her mature attitude that has taken her from a successful modelling career and paved her way into the unforgiving world of acting with a breeze. She also has these abundant locks in copper hues, which she keeps shiny with Pomegranate Conditioner and Sake Styling Crème, both by Fresh.

Another beauty secret that she has shared with us is that she uses SkinLights from Revlon on lips, eyes and cheeks to give that all over kitten glow. Eva also has told us that she adds to her exotic allure by using a chocolate glow called Rodial Brazilian Tan in dark, to add deep sumptuous colour.

She accentuates but does not overdo her features; when you look at her all you really see is luminous skin, vibrant, shiny hair and amazing blue eyes. In this particular photo she keeps her look so natural, and we love her for that. She wears a light dusting of translucent powder, light hues of coral on cheeks and lips and soft brown mascara to bring out her beautiful blue eyes. I see a bright future for this young actress and it is well-deserved: she really is the lovely ingénue.

Her staple, and it’s such a simple beauty trick, is Palmers Cocoa Butter all over the body and face for nourished, velvety soft skin. We love Eva not just because she’s beautiful but because she is real and so smouldering we could not put out her fire even if we tried.

CHARLIZE THERON

Iconic Star What words can one use to describe Charlize Theron? She is grace and elegance. A South African beauty, born and bred, who appears to be as gentle and serene as she is gorgeous. In this photo ruby red lips and her choice of dress set the tone of elegance with an edge. Most stars are hesitant to share their beauty secrets but I was happily surprised with how open she is. Charlize has been quoted saying that her beauty secret is, “If you live a good life and have good thoughts it shows.“ Well, if that’s her beauty secret then let’s get the positive thoughts flowing! To achieve her old Hollywood red carpet glamour, start by applying Chanel Teint Lumiere foundation in beige to clean skin, followed by a dusting of loose powder, also by Chanel in beige. Her smoky eyes can be achieved by using YSL Ombre Solo Smoothing Effect Eye shadow in Midnight Black across the lid with a Revlon contour brush and then gently tapping in with your ring finger for ultimate smoothness. Follow with Lancome Hydracils mascara in darkest black for a dramatic effect. The focal point of her stunning look is obviously her lips, achievable with Lancome Color Fever lipstick in Prune Glitter rescue. We love Charlize because she is an iconic star with a sweet and natural beauty that is one of a kind.

Your Breasts, Your Health WHATEVER YOUR AGE, SIZE OR SHAPE IT IS IMPORTANT TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR BREASTS. BEING BREAST-AWARE IS KEY PART OF CARING FOR YOUR BODY. IT MEANS GETTING TO KNOW HOW YOUR BREASTS LOOK AND FEEL, SO YOU KNOW WHAT IS NORMAL FOR YOU. YOU CAN THEN FEEL MORE CONFIDENT ABOUT NOTICING ANY UNUSUAL CHANGES. WITH ANY CANCER, THE KEY IS EARLY DETECTION SO READ ON FOR TOP TIPS ON HOW TO BE BREAST AWARE...

Be breast-aware It is important to be aware of how your breasts normally look and feel at different times. You will then notice if something is different or if you develop any of the signs and symptoms listed above. You can become familiar by looking and feeling your breasts from time to time in any way that is best for you. You can feel your breasts in the bath or shower using a soapy hand or lying down in bed; using body lotion can help. It is important to feel the whole breast, including the armpit. You can look at your breasts in the mirror. Move your arms (above your head, on your hips, by your sides) so that you can see your breasts from every angle, including the underside. As older women are at greater risk of breast cancer it is very important to be aware of any unusual changes after the menopause, when your periods have stopped. Breasts may change with age and life events: for example, pregnancy, breast-feeding, at different times of the month if you still have periods, and after the menopause. This is why it is important to know what is normal for you so you will recognise any changes.

Separating fact from fiction The facts:

The fiction:

• The biggest risk factor, after gender, is increasing age – 80 per cent of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50. • More people are being diagnosed with breast cancer but survival rates are improving – probably as a result of improved treatment and earlier detection. • Breast cancer also affects men but it is rare – around 300 men are diagnosed each year.

• Five years past diagnosis means I’ve got the ‘all clear’. As well as potentially experiencing long-term side effects of treatment, patients face the uncertainty that their cancer could return at any time – including a diagnosis of secondary breast cancer which can’t be cured, only controlled. • Stress causes breast cancer. Despite numerous studies, no definitive link between stress and breast cancer has been found. • Breast cancer is mainly a hereditary disease. Breast cancer can run in families, but fewer than 10 per cent of cases are as a result of an inherited faulty gene.

What to look for There can be many reasons for changes in the breast and often they will be harmless. Any unusual change needs to be checked by a doctor as there is a chance it could be a sign of cancer. For more information visit: breastcancercare.org.uk.

My Mallorca Di Foden THE AUTHOR OF AN ENTERTAINING BLOG ON EXPATRIATE LIFE (twocrumbliesandacat.blogspot.com) DI FODEN “DID THE CRUMBLY BRIT THING AND RETIRED TO MALLORCA TO SIT IN THE SUN AND GET FAT”. HERE SHE REVEALS HOW SHE’S HAPPILY STILL STRIVING TO ACHIEVE THESE GOALS. What originally brought you to Mallorca?

P AIRPORT-PARKING MALLORCA

A £69 package holiday in 1967, actually. I was 21 and fell wholeheartedly in love with my first taste of “abroad”. We were allowed only £50 spending money in those days, and there were rules about what you could take home as well. I came back with a ring threaded onto my bra strap. I felt so guilty I went through customs like the Hunchfront of Notre Dame. But I did decide during that holiday that I was going to live here one day. It’s only taken me 43 years to do it.

It has to be Soller, where I now live. I am not by nature a country girl, and living a romantic idyll in a slightly ruined but very beautiful Mallorcan heap of stones in the corner of a field is not my idea of a good time. Give me the buzz of town life instead, and a nice, convenient and modern flat with a lift and aircon. A wise friend once said to me, “Soller’s just right for you. There’s enough town to keep the nature at bay.” And as a fan of the built environment I love the marvellous Art Nouveau buildings.

EXIT No.10

That’s difficult. Rio de Janeiro for the Carnival (I’m a carnivalista), South Africa to see why I’d been picketing the South African embassy for years, Iran just before the revolution – that was interesting to say the least. What’s your favourite Mallorcan dish? Rafa Nadal.

I’m on the wagon at present – not by choice, believe me – so it’s freshly squeezed Soller orange juice for me.

What is your attitude to social networking sites?

How did being diagnosed with cancer change your life?

Love them. I have found great friends from years ago who have scattered all over the world. And there they are, sitting in my laptop. However, I do think that people should be a bit sparing with their observations and comments on themselves. It can get a bit boring. I tend to save mine up till I’ve got something to say.

Remarkably little, actually. The chemotherapy I am undertaking makes me tired and a bit crotchety, but then, being 64 does that. I have no religion, so am quite happy to take each day and what it contains as it comes; after all, we all have only this minute right now, don’t we? So I’m concentrating on making all my “right nows” as happy and busy as possible. However, I don’t intend to die yet if I can help it. Too much left to do and too much world I haven’t seen.

What was the last film you saw? We’ve been rather hit by the credit crunch and exchange rates, so when we go to the cinema it’s a rare treat. It was the last Harry Potter, actually. Yes, we were the embarrassed crumblies trying to hide in the back row. What animal do you most identify with? My cat, Mitzi, who is portly and going blind. She makes her way round the flat accompanied by a series of soft thuds as she walks into walls, doors and table legs. Well, I’m portly and short-sighted, so I do sympathise. Do you have any unfulfilled ambitions? I am the world’s least ambitious person. I found that once I had got my kids where they wanted to be (one on stage and one with a good degree), I had no further wish to be a thrusting go-getter. Staying alive would be nice – I’m receiving chemotherapy at the moment. That’s about it. What’s in your handbag? What isn’t? Desert island book? Just one? Impossible. Anything by Terry Pratchett. We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver, anything by Ruth Rendell or Kathy Reichs. Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources by Marcel Pagnol. See, can’t stop now.

Which person, living or dead, do you most admire and why? His name was Steve Kitson. He was the son of an ANC activist who was jailed in South Africa. Steve, his mother and sister ended up in the UK, but when Steve went back to South Africa to see his father in jail he too was jailed. Eventually freed, he returned to the UK and helped with the formation of the anti-apartheid movement and the constant picket of the South African embassy in London. He involved the London School of Samba, of which I was a member, in the constant picket, and we spent many a happy hour drumming outside the embassy with our little “what to do if you are arrested” cards in our pockets, and stopping the traffic in Trafalgar Square. He also formed the anti-apartheid choir to sing African freedom songs. He was not only the soundest man I have ever met; he could make a brick sing. He refused to believe that you weren’t a singer, and after five minutes with him you suddenly were. He could hold a room captivated and in gales of laughter, telling story after story. I loved him dearly. He died of cancer, aged only 40. Guilty pleasure? Heinz sandwich spread eaten with a spoon. So there.
