MFM news FitX Melbourne 2013 This year the FitX 2013 was massive with few new categories and more competitors. Every year the show grows and the participants as well as the audience doubles. It was also so great to see some of the Pro bikini world famous competitors to walk the stage at the Melbourne Convention Centre. Competitors like Nathalia Melo (below), India Paulino, Nicole Nagrani, Pollianna Moss rocked the stage and competed amongst our pro bikini models. For a first time there was a male fitness model category as well. It is great to see some bodybuilding celebrities as well such as Rich Gaspari and Ronnie Coleman as well as Phil Heath, the current 2x Mr. Olympia. MFM

mbracing Change
The Buddha liked to tell people, “Things change”, and although we all know it’s true, when push comes to shove we tend to forget it remarkably easily. A gentle reminder probably won’t hurt! So let’s be blunt. Shit happens. Now, India is a land which has produced more than its fair share of human wisdom. Not the sort of wisdom that created the television and the atom bomb, but some of the ideas that make it possible for people to feel happy and fulfilled. In India shit happens too. Lots of it, as there are a billion people and, well, shitloads of cows. Once upon a time, before we in the West were wise enough to “upgrade” to more toxic alternatives, we used cow shit on fields. In India they use people shit for that instead, but only because cow shit is way too useful as cooking fuel. Shit happens? Excellent - just what we needed!
30.MFM-Issue 4-July 2013
“But but but I can’t see how to make my shit into fuel or fertiliser!” I hear you say. Well, you could get a life coach, I guess! Now, change isn’t always unpleasant, of course. But for many of us, there is a conditioned default response to pretty much all change. It’s not perhaps a response that always wins the day, but I think you’ll agree that it often influences us more than serves us best. That response is, “Oh no!”
Fortunately the Buddha gave us the quote at the start of this article. Change is going to happen. In all areas of your life. Just so you know. Of course we do all “know”. But do we behave as if we know? No. So our challenge when faced with change is, first of all, to remember that change is inevitable, rather than just some unfair accident. And then to find a use for it!

The mango is a stone fruit. It can be eaten raw or in shakes as well as cooked. Mangoes are also used in preservatives or as dry fruits. Some of the health benefits of Mango are to protect against colon, breast, leukemia and prostate cancers due to its anti oxidants and pro biotic dietary fiber. Mango is also rich on potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin A, which helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure. Consumption of natural fruits rich in carotenes vitamin A is known to protect the body from lung and oral cavity cancers. Further, it composes moderate amounts of copper. Copper is a co-factor for many vital enzymes, including cytochrome c-oxidase and superoxide dismutase (other minerals function as co-factors for this enzyme are manganese and zinc). Copper is also required for the production of red blood cells. “Setback…Or a blessing in disguise?” By: Kishin Thadani There is a famous old saying that “what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger”. Is it true though? And do our setbacks, be it relationships, health, career, financial and many others, actually build our strength and resolve to eventually succeed in life? I believe that it is not quite as easy as a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. Because there are some challenges or setbacks in life that may not kill us, but may not make us any stronger than we were before the onset of the setback. Examples that come to mind may include things like mental and physical illnesses caused by anything from injuries to substance abuse.
such as being wiser, worldly, more in touch with ourselves and others, and being able to contribute more to those we love and care about, then this famous saying can take on a much more empowering meaning and can often be a blessing in disguise!
I feel that life’s setbacks teach us many things about ourselves, how we view the world, and how capable we are of making the most of it. When life is going smooth according to our goals and expectations, we often take it for granted and do not realise the true depths of our character, as Helen Keller describes below, and while there is certainly nothing wrong with a life without challenges, However, if we choose to look it also means that we may at the meaning of ‘stronger’ and miss out on some vital learning interpret it to include aspects opportunities to grow. 42.MFM-Issue 4 -July 2013
“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.”
Helen Keller (1880-1968) American writer and social activist. One of the beauties of going through setbacks in life, as hard as they may seem, is that they teach us to re-evaluate what is important in life and to actually seek aspects of our life that are actually going well which we may have previously overlooked. The word GRATITUDE comes to mind here.
The good news is that it can be very exciting to look at the aspects of our lives that are going well and by focussing on these, we can have an immediate sense of peace and appreciation, even for a short space of time, with a change of thought. Now imagine what
peace we could generate if we practiced this more often? It may be difficult, but just as we train the body for physical wellbeing, we can certainly train the mind for mental wellbeing too. I acknowledge that it can be hard to simply switch your focus. Sometimes the stresses of life and anxiety of the future can be debilitating. That is why I think that exposure to either challenges, or others with challenges, can be humbling and help us focus on what we DO HAVE, rather than what we don’t. Photo: Mariya Mova 43.MFM-Issue 4 -July 2013
A friend of mine recently was feeling down at the fact that he was turning 30 years old but had not yet achieved all his goals set for himself, which were to set up a business, earn a six figure salary and own his own house with an investment on the side. Interestingly, as we talked about this it became apparent that while he did not have all of those things, he had a beautiful and supportive fiancĂŠe on his side, he had great health, had travelled the world, socialised and made many friends, and still had a good job with a good income.
A change of focus was all that was needed to see the other side of what had originally seemed like an unsuccessful life, to a fulfilling one.
In my own relatively short life, I have experienced some setbacks. Only three years ago I was given a health diagnosis that continues to send shockwaves through my mind and body. It still is a challenge at times, but I believe it is also a blessing in disguise because it shifted my focus away from what I thought was so important at the time, to the very simple things that I took for granted We discussed whether he could that I no longer do! And the have had the time, money result? Less interest in seeking or energy for such a fulfilling things outside of me for lifestyle had he focused on his fulfilment, but instead looking goals originally set for himself, inward to find more inner peace and who knows? Perhaps not. and happiness.
“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. Dr. Wayne Dyer (1940-) American self-help author and motivational speaker.
I would not dare preach to the world on how to make light of serious health challenges that for so many people cause pain and suffering. This is not the focus of this article. But I would simply like to ask the question of whether in some small way, are we able to recognise the benefits that such setbacks may have brought us to focus on the little things in life that we may have taken for granted earlier? Our families, our friends, our ability to read this article with our eyes?
or a change in focus and that this can only come from within ourselves, is it really that difficult?
Sometimes I feel that the answer to a fulfilling life is such a paradox. On one had it may seem so challenging and frustrating that we feel the need to ‘study’ the art of happiness and seek guidance through many self help books and teachers. But on the other hand, is the answer a lot simpler and a lot closer to home? I mean, if our goal is to be happy each and every day, keeping in mind that happiness is so often just a thought away
Stay strong and embrace the challenges that help us grow…
I don’t believe it is. And while life throws us challenges that make it difficult to focus on the positives and make light of difficult situations, perhaps just the knowledge that there are some (even if a few) aspects of life that do make us happy at times, this alone gives us some light to guide us to the end of the tunnel.

Posing for the camera by Mariya Mova
Posing for the camera is not as easy as it sounds. A lot of models or girls/boys who are intending to become models think that if they are beautiful that’s all they need.
Have you seen those photos with the model’s shoulders are shrugged up and face all crunchy? Yes that’s right, this is because the model is holding their breath, which is not a natural action. The camera captures every small detail.
However, a good photo doesn’t only require the skill and gear of the photographer, it takes effort I have seen gorgeous girls in from the model too. amazing photos-but as soon as I see bad facial expression While the basic requirements or totally no emotion, the photo for a good photo including automatically becomes bad... equipment, composition, the other day I saw an amazing lighting and location are crucial, looking model in an amazing if the model’s posing, outfit and photo taken by an amazing grooming is substandard the photographer; but the model photos will turn into a disaster! had very sad eyes and almost Even your breathing counts looked like she was going to when it comes to posing. cry. 48.MFM-Issue 4 -July 2013

49.MFM-Issue 4 -July 2013
Unless your task is to create sadness in the image and atmosphere of the photo, sad eyes can look as bad as bad lighting and bad focus. A photo merely captures a moment in time, and if the model expresses an emotion at that time, the camera will pick it up. A model is a person who should develop certain traits and characteristics in their personality in order to promote a product, look, service, action, and expression for the sake of an art of the image in a photo that reflects a certain feeling or emotion the photographer requires.
to be expensive stuff-use your creativity! Your image is what you wear! Hair and make up is very important as well - don’t think that this can all be fixed with Photoshop. If you need to hire professional hair or make up artist make sure you arrange this in advance. Ask the photographer for help if you are in doubt! Posing: It takes a lot of practice to perfect your posing. Practice your best angles in front of the mirror and know your worst angles; and never do them in front of camera.
Some Tips for models who want Emotions: Try doing few facial to put the WOW factor in their expressions when posing in images: front of camera. You can create one smiling shot, one laughing Wardrobe: Make sure you shot, one sad and one happy have a range of outfitsshot, one looking away shot, unless you are supplied with one looking down or up shot, wardrobe on the shoot, bring and one totally cold or even your best outfits; if you need aggressive look, or totally sexy to go shopping to expand your and seductive look. See what wardrobe, do it – it doesn’t have works best for you. 50.MFM-Issue 4 -July 2013
Action shots- If you are in the gym or doing some activities, create the facial expression according to the action you are doing in front of the camera. Again, practice these in the mirror.
Use variety of position and head positions too. Posing without any emotion is like photographing a plastic doll. Always use expressions and different angles when posing. Your eyes are what connect you with the viewer.
Accessories and props: Use props and stages, chairs or near by equipment and benches for your shoot. Be Even if something in your life creative with what’s around you. bothers you, don’t take it with you on the shoot. Like an actor Positioning: Standing, Sitting, on the stage, you are required lying, kneeling, turning, walking, to forget about your world at jumping etc are some of many this moment, and focus on the poses and ideas. creating the image you or the photographer is after - that’s Never ever stand symmetrical why you are a model!! staring at the camera unless you are asked to do so - curves are what the photographer Sometimes the photographer is after. If the photo shoot is may guide you, but sometimes about muscles, flex those this isn’t their job, so you should muscles. Communicate with be prepared with poses and the photographer to flex your ideas of your own. muscles when he/ she is ready Don’t be conventional - have to shoot, otherwise you will fun - and do something likely get tired very quickly unusual. It will look awesome during the session just flexing on the photo and will create that your muscles all the time. wow factor too. MFM

Don’t be conventional - have fun - and do something unusual. It will look awesome on the photo and will create that wow factor too.
combination that creates the WOW factor too. No matter the size, the color, and the small imperfections of the model - NO BODY IS PERFECT!
Get posing ideas from other sources like photos or magazines - if you see photos that you like and you think you are able to recreate, take the photos and samples on set to help you with your posing and show the photographer. But don’t forget, poses should look natural, and after all try to create your own signature poses too….ones that reflect your looks and personality.
You can create amazing work together with the photographer! If you are well prepared, and creative, together you can create the perfect photo! MFM
Posing also depends on outfit and skill of the model - if you have special skills like dancing or jumping, or you are a sprinter, use some of the moves you are comfortable with - it often creates amazing images. Modeling is fun - show it when you are posing. The photographer is not only after the beauty but after that

A bit about my fitness journey: My journey started when I enrolled to study Certificate III and IV in Fitness. This course was a step in the right direction in practicing a healthier lifestyle. I established my own business as a personal trainer and aspire to motivate others to also reach their full potential. Working in the fitness industry has been very fulfilling, and I feel privileged I can be part of other peoples journeys. Over the years I have continued training hard. I love seeing the physical changes in my body, but also the mental changes. As I continued watching myself grow, I still felt like there was so much more I could do. In 2012 I decided I would hit the stage and compete. My first competition was U30 Fitness Model at ANB Victoria Championships. I have since competed in Oxygen National Fitness Model Competition, and will be competing again in March 2013. There have been many ups and downs, and moments
of doubt.. But that’s all part of the journey. One thing I have learnt from competing is not only finding myself, but also learning about other people’s paths and how they came to compete. It opened my eyes to the reality that no matter what your history is or where you come from, anything is possible. Future goals and aspirations: My aim is to continue improving myself in all aspects of life in order to be the best version of me. Now at 21 years old, I am studying Bachelor of Applied Science and Physical Education. I will also complete a Bachelor of Nutrition in the future. My plan is to combine my personal training business (DREAM| Fitness) with the knowledge I will have obtained from the Nutrition degree so I can eventually start a much larger business. This will predominately be focused on creating meal and fitness plans, goal setting, and the overall mindset with clients. No dream is too big! MFM 55.MFM-Issue 4 -July 2013
