Pride in Your Town Sometime in March we hope to welcome to our town the Another wonderful gesture by Wesley Hall was the great great grandson of Wesley Hall. So a refresher of his donation of the funds required to build the existing Saint relative of yesteryear gives more meaning to his visit. Mary’s Anglican Church which was consecrated in October 1899. Wesley Hall, 1839-1901, was a brother of Walter Russell and Thomas Skaratt Hall. Walter is best remembered The bricks of the Church were made at the local brick works for his interest in mining and Cobb and Co, Coaches and of that era. New Doctor for Mount Morgan
3.
The Mount Morgan community now boasts its first ever General Practice (GP) registrar with the arrival of a new doctor this month, as part of a James Cook University (JCU) program training GPs across North Western Queensland. Dr Kenny Parra is one of more than 130 doctors statewide who were inducted into JCU’s specialist GP training program, Generalist Medical Training (GMT) last week. The doctors will fill much-needed places in clinics and hospitals across regional and remote Queensland. Dr Parra attended a GMT introductory workshop on the Sunshine Coast last week, and said he is looking forward to settling into his new community after making the move from Brisbane recently. He will split his time between training at Mount Morgan Medical and the Mount Morgan Hospital, and brings more than a decade of postgraduate training and practical experience in cardio thoracics, intensive care, and aero medical medicine to his new role. Originally from Columbia, Dr Parra has spent more than a decade working in hospital intensive care units across Australia and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and is now looking forward to going back to his registrar roots and providing medical support to the Mount Morgan community. “I have found myself very specialised in one particular area so I wanted to get back into the community and interact with patients on a different level,” he said of his career move to becoming a GP. “Once I got a job in a clinic I found there were a few options for GP training. Fortunately enough I am only half an hour out of Rockhampton and GMT has an office in Rockhampton so it’s really helpful because I can talk to someone locally and I can go to my training every week or second week there. “My goal is to also complete my anaesthetics training so I can combine being a rural GP with anaesthetics. “There is so much to look forward to.”

Dr Kenny Parra (above) is looking forward to settling into his new role in Mount Morgan.
GMT Director, Associate Professor Peta-Ann Teague said the new training GPs will help to fill workforce gaps in many parts of Queensland. “We dedicate time and resources to matching applicants with training posts that will benefit their careers as well as the community. The training posts in our region provide the opportunity to develop an extended scope of practice that goes beyond urban, office-based general practice,” she said. “I’m looking forward to seeing these enthusiastic doctors make a real difference in their communities, particularly those communities who most need them. “JCU has coordinated the placement of new doctors from Thursday Island to Tewantin, Mount Isa to Maroochydore, and Cairns to Cloncurry,” Associate Professor Teague said. GMT is JCU’s specialist training program for medical graduates pursuing a career in General Practice. JCU is contracted by the Australian Department of Health to deliver the AGPT program in North Western Queensland.

Message from your MP - Stephen Andrew Projects such as the Fireclay Caverns & Carbine Resources Mine these projects are just two that I will be pushing hard for within my time in Queensland Parliament. As your State Member for Parliament I am looking forward to working closely with the “people” of the Mirani Electorate to be your voice in Queensland Parliament.
Pictured Above: MP Stephen Andrew
Since being elected to Queensland Parliament in the November 2017 election I have focused my time before being sworn into Parliament this February to get ‘Out and About’ within the Mirani Electorate, on what I like to call a “fact finding” mission. On tour around my electorate I have met some inspiring Community members, small business owners and met with Regional Mayors and Stakeholders in regards to some exciting projects that could completely change the dynamics of the Mirani Electorate and the Mount Morgan and surrounding areas.
I urge the community to contact myself or my office with any concerns, ideas or issues that can benefit the Mirani Electorate. My staff and myself are more than happy to take any inquiries and can be contacted on (07)48 060700 or email mirani@parliament.qld.gov.au

Hearing Bus to visit Mount Morgan
5.
IGA Mt Morgan Corner of Central & Dee Street 5th March 2018 8.00am to 1.00pm The Australian Hearing bus is stopping by Rockhampton, Yeppoon and Mount Morgan to offer free hearing checks and raise hearing health awareness. The mobile hearing service has provided over 35,000 free hearing checks in communities across Australia since it first launched in 2009. No destination is too far-flung or offbeat! Linda Busbridge, Manager at Australian Hearing Rockhampton and Yeppoon said as age-related hearing loss developed gradually over time it was common for people to not be aware their hearing is diminishing. Hearing loss is a prevalent issue in the community, with around 60 per cent of Australians over 60 suffering from some form of hearing loss. “A hearing check is a quick and easy way to measure the sounds you can and can’t hear. Our team will also be on hand to guide you through what next steps you may have to take in regards to your hearing.” As well as having a hearing check, visitors to the bus can find information on a range of common hearing issues and view a display of easy-to-use hearing devices for around the home. This includes headsets for watching the TV and alert systems for doorbells. Linda Busbridge said, “Not everyone who is experiencing problems hearing needs a hearing aid. Sometimes it’s just hearing the TV at normal volumes, hearing your doorbell, or hearing your friends on the phone that’s the problem.” No appointment is necessary. Australian Hearing will provide hearing checks to any interested adults who visit the bus on the day.

Kindy Care Happenings
The Kindy Care children have been very busy over the past few weeks. Our new children have settled in well and are having lots of fun making new friends and bonds with peers and educators. The children have been busy learning about Australia and creating lots of fantastic art work. We have explored the Great Barrier Reef with our Schoolies (Before and After School Care). In the Kindy room, we have made Echidna’s maps of the world with emphasis on Australia. Since school has returned we have learnt about the different Australian coins and what each picture on these coins represents. The children also cut out their own printed paper coins and made wonderful hanging mobiles. We made these in order of either smallest to largest or largest to smallest denomination.
We made Australian animal puppets where the children cut out their own animal head and coloured them in. These were then glued onto coloured paper bags, so the children could place their hands inside. The children had a fantastic time learning, making and exploring the animal noises and playing puppets. Cooking has been a great experience taste testing different ingredients that we used in the icing; the children loved tasting the icing sugar; we made some yummy lamingtons and used many skills to make them.
Next week we are going to do an experiment to see which way is better to grow seeds either in an egg carton or using 2 plastic cups and making a mini greenhouse (we are already making our own predictions). Each child will have their own to take care of and nurture. The children would love any donations of used milk/ juice bottle lids and small cartons please, so they can make cars trucks and other creations. Please leave donations at Kindy Care centre or call the centre on 49 381 772 and we can organise collection. Thank you. Finally, a bigthank you must go out to the fantastic and dedicated staff at Kindy Care, the time, effort and teamwork has been amazing. If you would like your child or children to attend our wonderful service, please call the centre 49381772 or Lisa on 043776993 or just drop into the centre at 17 Central Street, Mount Morgan.
A big thankyou goes out to the fantastic families and community members that have donated egg cartons. The children have already been very busy creating helicopters from the egg cartons.

MMPAD DAM RESTOCKING SAT 17th FEB! 8am-9am
Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. will be restocking the Mount Morgan Dam with 9,500 Golden Perch this Saturday 17th February 2018 between 8am-9am. The restocking of the fingerlings is part of MMPAD and the Fisheries Queensland Freshwater Recreational Enhancement Management Plan for the Mount Morgan Dam. This sees thousands of native fish annually released as a strategy to enhance the recreational fishing experience in the local area. Since 2015, MMPAD has purchased and released fingerlings into the dam as per the guidelines in the general fisheries permit, which outlines the number, size and species of the fingerlings to be released into the water each year. As a result of the rain event early in 2017, MMPAD was not able to release any fingerlings, however the Department of Fisheries has agreed to an increased number this year. One fish hatchery was able to supply the required species and number of fingerlings.
The 65mm fingerlings were lovingly reared by the Cluff Family from Hanwood Fish Hatchery, located at Murgon. These fingerlings spawned around Christmas 2017 and were raised in ponds on the Hanwood Farm. With ample food, shelter and water, the Mount Morgan Dam provides a perfect habitat for the fingerlings, strategically placed in sheltered shallows for further protection from predators and strong currents. It is expected that the legal size of the Golden Perch (30cm minimum) will be realised in 24-30 months time. Yellowbelly or Golden Perch (Macquaria ambigua oriens) - Fitzroy/ Dawson strain, are a revered angling and table species of freshwater fish found within the Fitzroy Dawson River system of Queensland and a sub-species of the Golden Perch found around the country.
Golden Perch form the backbone of the inland fishing in Australia. They are willing takers of baits including crayfish, shrimps and worms. They are also lure takers with spinner baits and trawled deep diving lures gaining more popularity. Eating qualities vary depending upon the waters they are caught from and the size of the fish. Larger fish are often very fatty along the top of the back. MMPAD invites those who would like to assist with the release of the fingerlings, to meet at the boat ramp at the Mount Morgan Dam at approximately 8am-9am. We ask that all children please be accompanied by an adult. If you would like further information email mmpad@bigpond.com or phone 49 382 312.

The Orange Dot Movie Review By Larry at Fox Video
SWALLOWS & AMAZONS For those of us who remember a childhood of sunshine and freedom where you left the house at daylight in pursuit of grand adventure and weren’t expected home ‘til dark, SWALLOWS & AMAZONS takes us back to that exciting world of daring enterprise, imagination and heroic action.
For those of us who are growing up today in our rooms filled with screens and devices SWALLOWS & AMAZONS calls out to us, invites us to come out to play and shows us that it is still there, that beautiful, adventurous and romantic world - just waiting for us. This enchanting new take on the beloved novel by Arthur Ransome, SWALLOWS & AMAZONS tells the story of four children, the Walkers, whose summer holiday in England’s Lake District sees them sailing out on their own to occupy and explore a local island, which they plan to name and claim. After overcoming many challenges, they arrive at their island only to find that they are not alone. There is, on the island, evidence of a rival group who call themselves THE AMAZONS and from the warning signs they’ve placed, not at all friendly to visitors/occupiers/claimants. There could be war... And what about that mysterious and dark old pirate who lives on his boat in a cove just a short distance from their island?
He’s a full grown, decidedly unfriendly hairy and probably dangerous old man and he’s definitely up to something. The Walker children call him ‘Captain Flint’. As events unfold and accelerate, an adventure far bigger than they could have imagined begins to spin out of control and tests the SWALLOWS & AMAZONS to their limits. Prepare to be delighted and enchanted by this wonderful tale for the whole family. SWALLOWS & AMAZONS, PG, 93 minutes and... loved it! A footnote... The author Arthur Ransome was a truly fascinating and adventurous man who deserves a movie focussing on his own life. As a younger man he was a foreign correspondent reporting on the Russian Revolution and he was intimate with its leadership (including a tempestuous affair with Trotski’s Personal Secretary). He was then recruited by MI5 as an international covert agent, and secret documents recently released showed that MI5 later suspected that Arthur had become a double agent. He survived the hazards of the spy business and later settled down to live on his boat and write tween and teen adventure novels (hence the “Captain Flint” character in this film).
On Monday 29th January 2018, staff and volunteers at the Railway Museum/ Tourist Information Centre were delighted to have a visit from Dr Lola Power from the Gold Coast. Many Mount Morgan residents would remember Dr. Power as the much loved physician with a private practice in Morgan Street from 1981-1988. “It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to return to Mount Morgan and speak with many old friends, and visit places I remember so well”. Dr. Power said. Nienke van der Peet, from Heemskerk in The Netherlands popped into the Railway Museum on Wednesday the 24th January 2018, after her town and mine tour. Neinke has wanted to visit Australia since she was seventeen, however her career as a model had made it impossible until now. “I love Australia’s friendly people. I love to be outdoors with Nature hiking. The weather here is great!” Neinke said. After her visit Neinke was off to Morgan Street for a coffee and a visit to the shops.

Gentle Folk are Coming to Mount Morgan Again
After last year’s very successful “Gentlefolk Single-speed, Fixie and Old Bike Society” ride in Mount Morgan we are coming back for another one. The ride will be on Saturday 14th April, that’s the second weekend after Easter. Starting at 3pm, from the Gas light in East Street. The ride will be about 14 kilometres, with lots of stops along the way, including afternoon tea; we will finish at about 6 pm. After the ride we will all meet up at a local eatery for dinner where we can swap stories about how easy it was to ride up some of Mount Morgan’s hills. Members of the Gentlefolk Single-speed Fixie &
Old Bike Society in Mount Morgan 2017 Last year’s ride had over 30 riders on varieties of different bikes, mostly older ones, but any bike is fine. Most of the riders stayed in Mount Morgan overnight; there were Our January ride was around Emu Park, over 70 riders riders from Yeppoon and Hervey Bay, but mostly from turned up, that is the largest turn out we have had. Rockhampton.
The “Gentlefolk Single-Speed, Fixie and Old Bike Society” started in Rockhampton in December 2015 as a small group of people getting together to ride their older style bikes and socialise together. What started as a ride to a picnic spot morphed into laneway rides, and rides to interesting areas and historical sites around Rockhampton and CQ.

Steelite Fishing Rod
That Truck & Bobcat Bloke ABN: 35347197734
By Graeme Meade
Old Bakelite fishing reels are common; there are plenty of them around. A friend found this reel under a house. It was a high set house and this was sitting on one of the floor studs. The reel was totally covered in dust, really thick, so it must have been sitting up there for years. I cleaned it up for him, it looks heaps better now, but it is totally seized up, not very well looked after I guess. On the front it is stamped Steelite Sydney, on the back is S & A Steelite Reg. No.1869 29.4 31. When I saw that I thought “Wow it’s almost 90 years old”, better find out some facts first. I guess two men called Stewart & Allwood started Stewart & Allwood Pty. Ltd. in Sydney, in the early 1930s. That’s where the S & A comes from. They registered the Steelite brand, Reg. No. 1869 on 29th April 1932 and produced a variety of reels under the Steelite brand. Apparently Steelite reels, a NSW company were in direct competition with Alvey, a Queensland company and some of the Alvey designs were possibly “borrowed” by Steelite. Stewart & Allwood continued producing their reels until 1987, but eventually they were not able to compete with the famous Queenslanders, who are just managing to survive today. This reel is a side casting reel, possibly a Model 80, from the 1950s. They look like Bakelite but are not really Bakelite, they are made from a compound substance called casein, produced from milk and pressed into Bakelite form. They did not swell or buckle when in use and were nicely finished and polished in brown and black looked perfect. Fishing reels are a nice collectable. There are lots of different types, most are reasonably priced, but some can be worth hundreds of dollars, some early ones thousands.
