The following is an article written by Ray Anderson. In memory of those who lost their lives in the tragic air disaster involving the loss of Fokker Friendship Aircraft VH-TFB “ABEL-TASMAN” off the coast on Friday night 10th June 1960.

There was a short segment of this event recently by WIN Television presenter Peter Byrne in which he told the story. On board included Mount Morgan High School teacher the late Miss Mavis E Harris (domestic home science) and seven young students from the Rockhampton Grammar School among others. Peter said that an investigation of the crash revealed that it was due to bad weather during a storm in which two seashore lights lit the outer sea reflections which resembled an aerodrome out to sea at this local place called Far Beach. It is only two kilometres east of Mackay’s airport. Apparently no one had any idea of what happened. It brought about the reason for a black box and recording system being installed in all planes today. This is where my side of the story begins. I can recall quite vividly where I was standing when I heard the news bulletin on 4RO. It was on the 11th June (the next day) and it was my 15th Birthday (born 11.06.1945). I was at my cousin’s home on the corner of Barambah and Jardine Street, Wandal, Rockhampton. What a shock it was. It is possible that it was a Queen’s Birthday Weekend with a holiday on the Monday. At that particular time I was a flag boy with fellow student, (the late) Ken Banks at the Mount Morgan High School. First day back at school, Ken suggested we should fly the flag half-mast but I said “no” and that we should wait until told as there could be someone important wanting to speak to the parade. To this day I can still recall Miss Harris in her dark blue pleated skirt and a lighter coloured blouse that was part of her uniform with not a hair out of place whether permed or natural. Her black hair always looked neat and tidy - short at the back. On the way back to class we were met by Deputy Principal, Bill Millar (what a gentleman!). He told us that tomorrow he would like we two lads to lower the flag half-mast. He asked if we could do that and to just take our time. We both agreed. With the flag pole made high with a white cotton rope and often a small U-Bolt to tie top and bottom chords of the flag, one would come adrift, fly upside down and half-mast; which was a sign of “in distress”. I would tell Ken not to look up when this happened. Bill Millar would give the orders to lower the flag and hold each end. “Good idea” I would say to Ken. After these happenings I was expecting anything to happen come next day. I folded the flag 12” square, half hitched the bottom hand line, took it up and waited patiently. Bill gave his orders and turned to the flag. I pulled the trip chord and it unfurled as planned. I then lowered it 1 1/2 the width of the flag from the top of the pole and tied it off - all done in 10 seconds. The pole was built on the side of a bank or small hill like most things in Mount Morgan. I told Ken to walk up the bank on the track and get on ground level. We both bowed in respect. The flag flew for the rest of the day. Ken said he would collect the flag after school as I told him that I would probably be “kept in”. Bill commented on our achievement and told us it was a very professional effort. He asked where we had learnt about that and I said that we were both Boy Scouts for a number of years. While taking our granddaughter back to Mackay to start school in Grade 1, I called into the park and memorial to collect a few photos. It was very peaceful, clean and tidy and half a dozen black cockatoos above in the trees chewed seed pods from the paper barks and oak trees. While the wind was wavering in the she oaks, others glided around on the wind. After a while, the sun was deciding to go to sleep behind the hills - it was time to go. To all those people on board whose life ended that night, may they Rest in Peace.

To The Community of Mount Morgan, Your Swimming Club History story from 1893-1973 has now been received by the Mount Morgan Historical Museum. For me it has been such a heartfelt journey back to my competition days - and a delight to bring past swimmers together after such a long time to share our memories and the joy of finding photos that I never knew existed. Thank you to the families who contributed photos through Mount Morgan Pride on Facebook and email; you helped fill in some of the gaps. A copy of our Swimming History will also be available for viewing in the near future at the History Section of the Rockhampton Library. I’m sure it will bring back many memories for those whose family members competed during this time. Whilst there were many articles listed in my research I extracted yearly events to identify past Champion Swimmers. To seek other swimming entries not in my records you can further search in Trove on the internet. Thank you to Laurel Philp [Brooks] who delivered the folder to the Historical Museum for me during your Golden Mount Festival weekend as I was unable to make the trip. There are 5 chapters. The last 2 chapters concentrate on State and High School Swim Events, and include competition photos up to 1973. Chapter 5 details Mount Morgan Welfare Amateur Swimming Club Champions from 1955 - 1968. The very last page includes the recent photos of past Swimmers Noel Weaver, Don Budge, Carol Malivoire [Parker] Carole Kelly [Humphries], Bill Sweetenham, Ian Kirkman, Laurel Philp [Brooks] Bronwyn Dudfield [Parker] Gwen Clayton [Parker]. Best Wishes Mount Morgan and enjoy the memories. Regards Carol Malivoire

Winter is here and the load on the hot water system goes up. Every year a number of electric hot water units will fail and need replacing, which is expensive. How about getting your hot water system serviced? $165 including G.S.T. Hot water systems have a sacrificial annode to protect the system. If your hot water unit is more than 7 years old the annode should be replaced. If your hot water unit is older we can still check to see if a service would help. Q.L.D. LICENSE NO. Little Miss Lundager II As mentioned in the previous Argus issue, here’s the second portrait of the little local pioneer girl, Hulda Lundager. It’s one of the best-known and most endearing portraits taken by her father, Danish-born photographer, Jens Hansen Lundager. He skilfully captured the same curious expression of the little girl and her cat. c. 1894 / Mount Morgan / Rockhampton-born Hulda Helene Lundager (1888-1970), with her cat and her doll. Jerry Can

by Graeme Meade

This week’s little story is about something that is very common to some people, especially four wheel drive owners. It is also something that is made from plastic nowadays. A friend found this while he was helping someone clean up, it was very dirty and rusty and had a mixture of sand and black powder inside it. I cleaned, rust killed and painted it with Penetrol. It looks better now and all the writing on it can be read. This can has “G” and “ QMC” stamped into one side, and “G” and “USA” stamped into the other side. The cross-like indentations on the sides help to strengthen the can while allowing the contents to expand. There would be markings on the base, but it is too rusted to read. On the top is stamped “Cavalier”, that is the name of the manufacturer. It is also stamped under the handles, I cannot read most of it, but I can see what looks like a date 1943. There is also white printing on it SAE 30 4 GALLS, so maybe it was used to carry oil, it is a 5 gallon tin. Jerry cans are called Jerry cans because the design was copied from petrol cans that were made in Germany. In 1940 some German petrol cans made their way to the USA and were copied. The 3 handles on top can be used in several ways, the middle one for carrying when full, the outside ones for carrying with 2 people and carrying 2 empty ones in one hand. Most steel cans were painted olive drab when manufactured, but this one has no sign of any olive drab on it. It is painted blue, even though the top half has been repainted pale blue at some stage. I suspect this would be a can used by the US Air Force, their Jeeps and trucks were painted this blue colour. This can has not got the familiar bayonet type opener, it has a screw on one, known as a Rieke lid. During WWII lots of US troops were stationed in the Rockhampton area, I would guess that the US Air Force would have been using the airport. I have heard that the Mount Morgan Showgrounds may have been used from time to time during WW II but have not been able to find any proof. How a 1943 Jerry can came to Mount Morgan and has survived for over 75 years no-one will ever know.

Mount Morgan invited to help name CBD’s new seating areas Mount Morgan residents have taken inspiration from the town’s rich mining history and a number of local identities to help name the four shelters located in the town’s new look CBD. Rockhampton Regional Council invited the community to submit name ideas for the new seating areas, which were installed as part of the $2.4 million streetscape upgrade. Parks Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said close on 30 submissions have been received and that she was thrilled with each suggestion’s significance. “From the mine’s gold-bearing hill, to early town dignitaries and inspiring locals, each of the names submitted are fantastic and we’re thoroughly impressed with the list we now have to choose from,” Cr Rutherford said. “It’s wonderful to see local history and local residents recognised and that the community is seeing the naming of these shelters as an opportunity to do exactly that.” Cr Rutherford said Council is now inviting the community to view the full list and vote on their favourite four. “We have 28 suggestions to choose from, and would love if the community could help us narrow it down,” she said. “Voting is open for two weeks from this Argus issue, and we have an online and hardcopy voting option. “A big thanks to all who submitted a name suggestion and to everyone now helping us to choose the top four and see the brand new shelters named,” Cr Rutherford said. Residents can vote for their top four names by completing the voting slip found on this page of the Mount Morgan Argus, and submitting it to Council’s Customer Service Centre in Hall Street. Additional voting slips are also available from this location. An online voting option is also available, and can be found at: https://www.rockhamptonregion.qld.gov.au/Community-andEvents/Regional-Voice and search for the current event.

Voting closes 31 May, 2018. For further information, phone Council on 1300 22 55 77. * See page 9 for list of name options.

This year the school’s Positive Behaviour for Learning Team (PBL) put a new spin on the usual formal sit down parent teacher evenings, making this one stand out from the rest. Parents and students were invited to attend an informal afternoon session where the focus was on building positive relationships between students, teachers and families. A sausage sizzle was provided and drinks were on sale with proceeds going towards the Year 12 formal. Based on feedback from students and families the event was a raging success and is set to be a regular event on the school calendar.

This term Mount Morgan High School will commence Girls Netball at Jardine Park in Rockhampton with 4 teams in the draw. Yr 7, Yr 8/9, Yr 10/11 and a year 12 team. All games are set to be played in the time slots of 5pm and 5:30pm. This year will see Mount Morgan High students compete in Soccer with other high schools in Rockhampton with an eager Year 9 team. News From the Lorikeets

Our first home game of 2018! It was a big day of Rugby Union in Mount Morgan on Saturday with 4 games from U13’s to A Grade. The Lorikeets were as close to full strength as we have been all year although we were still 5 players down with only 3 reserves. Brothers quickly reverted to the game plan which worked so well for them in last year’s Grand Final, using their big forwards close to the ruck. Whilst this did prove effective at times, the Mount Morgan forwards fought for every metre and brought some big contact to the Brothers’ attackers, as often as not driving them back and halting their momentum. In the first half Connor Stewart continued his try scoring form from the last game, running in two tries, one of which was converted by Todd Toby. Brothers managed one converted try of their own in the first half. Half time score: Mount Morgan 12 Brothers 7. In the second half, on the back of a number of penalties, Brothers scored first to take a 14-12 lead. Unsatisfied with two tries in the first half, Connor Stewart ran in another two unconverted tries in the second half. Brothers were not able to trouble the scorers again and the final score was Mt Morgan 22 def Brothers 14. Stewart’s seven tries in the last two games has put him on top of the try scorers’ table in reserve grade and second in the overall list. The Lorikeets are back on the road again for the next three weeks, Gladstone next week, then Biloela and after that Moura. On June 16th we are back in Mt Morgan for our Cancer Council Charity Day.
