Margaret Baker’s Personal View of the 2018 Games After almost two years of preparation and training the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games have come and I think my favourite story is of a young man from England. gone. I met him last year when he came to Brisbane for the In 2000 I was a volunteer at the Sydney Olympics and Commonwealth Shooting Championships, his dedication again in 2006 at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games to training was impressive.
but this was so different, to be a Technical Official at a home state competition of this magnitude was a whole I asked him would he be back for the Commonwealth Games and he replied, “No I’m not good enough to be new experience. in the team”. Well he did get into the English pistol team I was advised that my job function would be assistant and he shot well enough to qualify for the final and won Chief Range Officer (CRO) working on the 25m shooting a Bronze Medal - Wow ! I was so thrilled for him, even range, a position that I was very happy with. When we though he knocked out an Aussie on his way. all arrived at the Belmont Shooting Complex in Brisbane the 25m CRO assigned me the CRO’s position for the 25m Woman’s Pistol event. You can’t imagine how excited (and a little nervous, I might add) I was at the prospect of being in charge of this event, as this had been my ultimate goal. The event is run over two days. Day one is official training for the athletes who if they wish to, shoot a complete match, some choose to only shoot part of the match, and day two is the actual competition. I’m happy to report that all went well - no equipment glitches, no technical errors and no athlete complaints, “very important”. That was only two days out of the 14 days that the games went for, but the comradery between all the technical officials, range officers, volunteers and athletes was a wonderful experience andthe dedication that the athletes put into their training is quite something to observe.
Australian athletes in the shooting did particularly well at these Games. Of the five pistol events there were 5 medals won. 1 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze. I think everyone saw big Dan win his gold on TV, you could not miss that beard. We are so proud of them all. We must not forget the Gold Coast 2018 volunteers the “Games Shapers”. These people, some travelling thousands of kilometres at their own expense to take part. What a wonderful job they did. Gold Coast 2018 has left Queensland with a wonderful legacy in that we have a number of new facilities covering a variety of sports. The Belmont Shooting Complex is an example. This complex is unique, it is the only one in the whole of Australia that can accommodate all international shooting disciplines, Full Bore Rifle, Shotgun, Small Bore Rifle and Pistol, all on electronic scoring targets. Being involved in the 2018 Commonwealth games has certainly added to my past involvement in these competitions, but because they were held in Queensland, these games go to the top of my list as the best yet.

Our next Dance at Baree will be held on Saturday 23rd June. The theme will be State of Origin so all you Queenslanders out there, come dressed in your maroon but we are not biased, we will even let you in if you are in blue. Flyers with all the details will be out shortly so keep an eye out for them around town. Our May Markets turned out to be a cool breezy day which I think kept people indoors but the sausage sizzle Stall was popular. Greg and Len are proving themselves quite proficient with their culinary skills. Lucky stall holder on the day was Priscilla (Massage and Face Painting Stall) and winner of the fruit & vege tray was Sandy.

Pride in Your Town
IT IS THE YEAR 1861. IT IS THE YEAR 1862. The Melbourne Cup was run for the first time, and won A Rockhampton chemist advertised opium available for 50 by Archer. to 60 shillings per pound. There was excitement in November when gold was found on the Peak Downs, about 220 miles from Rockhampton. The first outbreak of gold fever in Central Qld. occurred in 1858 when 15000 people rushed to Canoona, 37 miles north of Rockhampton, but most left empty handed. Much excitement was created by the advent on July 9 of Rockhampton’s first newspaper founded by a Sydney newspaper editor, William Hitchcock Buzacott. His brother, Charles Hardie Buzacott took over the paper in 1870. The weekly Rockhampton Bulletin was printed on four pages of broadsheet and, filled with local stories, news from abroad, advertisements for local businesses and shipping news. With outstanding ownership and editorial direction from the Buzacotts (1861-80), William McIlwraith and partners (1880-1911) and the Dunn family (1911 –late 1980’s) into the modern age, the paper (which became The Morning Bulletin in 1873) became the oldest and only surviving daily newspaper in Rockhampton.
The first Masonic Hall in Rockhampton was in Quay Lane. The Leichhardt Masonic Lodge opened on September 23 with W J Brown as Worshipful Master and around 40 brethren present. Rockhampton’s first public primary school, the Central State School on the corner of William and Denison streets was formally opened on November 18 by the Hon the Minister for Lands and Works in the presence of a numerous assemblage. Torrential rain at Rockhampton from March 29-30 was followed by a flood which prevented the ships Boomerang, Jeannie Dove, and others in the Fitzroy River from leaving. The water at Yeppen rose 16 feet above the ordinary level and the steam sawmill and dwelling house of Mr Carpenter were completely submerged along with other houses.

Mrs. Hall was a native of Victoria. She was the eldest daughter of the late George Kirk ... of South Yarra, who was born in Yorkshire, England, but came to Victoria in 1839. Throughout her life she gave practical expression to her large-hearted benevolence, and when on the death of her husband ..., she acquired immense wealth, she sought competent advice as to how she could best devote the greater part of it to the benefit and relief of her fellow-citizens in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, the States with which her husband and herself had been most closely connected’ (The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.: 1848-1957), 15 February 1916). c. 1890 / Melbourne-born Eliza Rowdon Hall (née Kirk) (18471916) / Philanthropist / Sydney resident / Daughter of Victorian pastoralist, George Kirk ( -1882), and Elizabeth Wippell ( -1901) / Wife of Walter Russell Hall (1831-1911), original director and shareholder of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company Limited from 1886 to 1911 / Founder of the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust* in 1912 through a donation of one million sterling. *For more information, visit the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust at http://www.wehalltrust.org.au. Banjo Mandolin
by Graeme Meade
I picked this up a few weeks ago, it’s a Banjo Mandolin or a Banjolin. It was owned by the same family for 88 years and was second hand when they got it. Banjo Mandolins were first made in the late 1800s, in the USA. This instrument has the name Cuckoo on it. There are no records of any manufactures in Australia called Cuckoo, but there are none overseas as well, so I assume that this is made in Australia. It could have been made overseas, sent here and badged Cuckoo (like so many products today). The tail piece at bottom has got “ English Made” on it, but only refers to that part. They are not easy to come by but are sort after by people that collect old musical instruments. The heyday of this type of instrument was the early 20th century, used by bluegrass, folk, country music groups. For an acoustic instrument it is quite loud. It has eight strings, paired together like a mandolin. The back is made of wood, as well as the outside frame, the resonator. The metal part inside of that is called the pot, the drum head that covers that looks like it is made from a pig skin. It has a wooden moveable bridge on it. It’s a nice old piece and has seen the inside of many venues around Mount Morgan in the early days of the town.

The Orange Dot Movie Review By Larry at Fox Video
The Shape of Water
Guillermo Del Toro is a force of nature, a filmmaker extraordinaire and a cinematic genius, a director, a screen writer, a producer, a novelist and a special effects makeup artist; he started as a child in Mexico making his own short films, later going on to film school and then studying special effects under a master of the trade, Dick Smith He has since been responsible for, as a writer, director or producer (and often all three) such great films as CRONOS, PANS LABYRINTH (If you haven’t seen it, you must), MIMIC, BLADE 2, HELLBOY 1,2 & 3, KUNG FU PANDA 2 & 3, COWBOYS & ALIENS, PUSS IN BOOTS, THE HOBBIT 1,2 & 3, THE PACIFIC RIM, (working on No. 2 as we speak) CRIMSON PEAK and now his latest triumph, the dark sci-fi fantasy, THE SHAPE OF WATER (to name just a few). In his spare time, he also writes and directs video games.

MP Delivers Good News for Unemployed Locals This week the Member for Mirani has travelled the Southern part of his electorate with the focus of his trip centred on employment prospects and economic growth in the regions. Mr Andrew has been in talks with representatives from the Rockhampton branches of Teys Australia and JBS Australia in hopes of finding employment for people in the local area. While he is concerned with staggeringly high unemployment rates in the Mount Morgan area, he says that his discussions with representatives of the companies who employ staff to work in the meatworks industry were promising. “Representatives from the companies who employ meatworks staff in Rockhampton have said that they’re very willing to employ local people and skill them for the positions by putting them through training programs. It’s a great entry level opportunity for people who are seeking employment, and from there they can learn a new skillset and progress up the ladder.” Mr Andrew is also looking into possible methods of transport for Mount Morgan residents who are interested in finding employment in Rockhampton. “It might only be a small step in bringing the unemployment figure down for the area, but it’s a small step in the right direction” Mr Andrew said. Last month Mr Andrew wrote to the Minister for Innovation and Tourism Industry Development and Minister for the Commonwealth Games, the Hon Kate Jones. He outlined his concerns and asked the Minister what could be done in order to progress developments for the regional area of Mount Morgan, in particular the Mount Morgan Mine, Fireclay Caves and Dairy Creek Steam Train and Locomotive Tours. He continues to push for assistance to revive the aforementioned projects in the Mount Morgan area which are necessary for economic growth. Stephen Andrew MP Member for Mirani
