Golden Mount Festival

It’s was that time again! The event full of creativity and fun. The Golden Mount Festival 2018. The Festival started on Friday night the 4th May, with a talent quest and photography competition. The School of Arts was alive with the sound of talented artists performing for the panel of judges. Comedy, instrumental and vocal items were the highlights of the night with eveyone thoroughly enjoying themselves. There is so much talent in our town of Mount Morgan! The smiling faces and shouts of glee coming from the Primary School oval were like a beacon to children in the vacinity; who were drawn in by all the colours and noise. Ride after ride, the the youngsters had a blast. It was the event they had been waiting for.

On Saturday morning the 5th May, the fun continued. Markets kicked off at 8:30am with Kaitlyn Lodewikus opening the ceremony with the “Welcome to Country” . There was plenty on offer from the various market stalls and food vendors.

The belly dancers hypnotised the crowds with their rythmic performances and sparkling costumes while Di Coburn wowed the crowds with her singing.

Golden Mount Festival

The clouds started to darken the skies, however the rain stayed away for the procession. At 1:30pm the convoy headed up Morgan street. Lead by a police escort, the array of vehicles and people marched their way along the road in front of the adoring public. The businesses and residents really got behind the theme for this year “We Love Sports” with the floats all decked out with golf greens, rodeo, football, and even cheerleading. The creativity and diversity of entries was amazing. Mane Street Hair Studio took out the top prize for best float. Congratulations!

The Senior Running of the cutter was just as gruelling with the trophy now finally back in Mount Morgan’s hands. 1st place went to The Grand Hotel team and second was taken out by AARRSS. MMPAD proudly sponsored the senior cutter race. After the fun of the procession died down, it was time for the Running of the Cutter. The junior runners took up their starting positions and prepaired for the race to begin. Once they were told “Go”, the runners sped off to the newly opened Nugget Hotel. The long stints prooved to be no match for our junior runners with the Mount Morgan Lorikeets taking out 1st place and The Nugget taking out 2nd.

2018 Rodeo! At 11am the Rodeo began. Rose was kind enough to give the audience their “Welcome to country” while Wayne played the didgeridoo. The Councillor Ellen Smith entered the ring and officially opened the Rodeo. There were plenty of catagories for the competitor, with some brilliant prize money on offer.; Saddle bronc riding, bareback, barrel racing, steer ride, even little ones on poddy calves.

Saturday night’s rain looked like it might have put a bit of a dampener on the Rodeo. Once morning arrived however, it was a completely different story. The sun was bright and hot that morning and there was no sign of the previous nights rain. The dust had far from settled around the showgrounds and the stock were happy to coat anyone who dared sit too close to the fence in a thick blanket of it.

With some angry looking bulls penned, the riders mounted. The gates flew open and the animals were free. They tried their best to throw their human accessory off within 8 seconds. Most competitors were victorious and held on for that magic 8 second buzzer, but some unfortunatly ate more dust than what was recommended.

Congratulations to all the competitors and winners. A full list of winners next edition.

Winner of the Hay or $250 raffle was Joan Cavanagh, who chose to take the money. The Mothers’ Day Raffle was won by J. Matheson from Aramac.

The horse sports commenced at 8am. The three categories were: bending race, figure 8 and barrel race. The horses seemed to enjoy the events almost as much as their riders did.

Tony Ward was the lucky winner of the Bull S...Bingo.

It was great to see the students of Mount Morgan High volunteering their time at the Rodeo on Sunday. Well Done.

Pride in Your Town

Photo from the Morning Bulletin Thursday June 25th 1998

It is on the drawing board again... An article in Saturday’s Morning Bulletin dated 12th April 2018 stated the Rockhampton Regional Council plans to connect Mount Morgan to the city’s water supply scheme via a pipeline, to provide water security in the town.

Water security has always been an issue for the town and the concept of a pipeline from Rockhampton was first suggested over fifty years ago, so it is encouraging to hear that this option is now being considered. In 1954 the Fletcher’s Creek scheme came into operation but the first drought after its implementation resulted in there being no water at all to households between the hours of 2pm and 4pm - turning on a tap and getting nil water was very frustrating. Severe restrictions became the norm. To supplement the water supply in one drought water was carted by train to the closest siding (we still had a railway line then) and the water was discharged into a temporary pipeline to the Fletcher’s Creek mains for pumping into the reservoir. This ‘plan b’ is no longer an option with the rail line long gone. It was in 1998 that the then Mayor, Mr Ritchie Bills commenced the project to heighten the dam wall; this extension was officially opened later that year with politician Paul Marek and Mayor Stan Lean performing the honour. Thank goodness for that extra storage capacity. To further storage capacity the northern end has been dredged. At present, the big dam, while holding a good quantity of water also features as one of the town’s main attractions to tourists, Rockhampton folk and locals alike. Regardless of a pipeline being installed, the picturesque big dam has much to offer and will continue to be a permanent attraction to our town. When we think of weather patterns it is now vastly different from years past. ANZAC Day dawn service almost always warranted an overcoat. Show Day in August with blustery winds always meant a jacket was needed (followed by a hot cup of soup when you got home). June and July were noted for frosts and ice on the windscreens – venturing out at night entailed wearing warm undergarments. January’s Australia Day was the Country Cricket Carnival in Rockhampton but you could bet it would be a wet day. The summer storms we relied on to fill the big dam seem to have disappeared so let’s hope the pipeline eventuates. Once reliant on so many sources from wells to recycling grey water, Mount Morgan would once again bloom with a secure water supply. Hope you enjoyed a Happy May weekend in a clean, tidy town.

Old Friends Reunited On Friday the 4th May 2018, staff at the Mount Morgan Visitor Information Centre received a query from a Rockhampton Visitor. “I don’t suppose you know anything about a Lady who used to live here named Bette Broom, do you?” To Elsie Balchin, nee Barrowman’s, surprise and delight, Rhonda replied in the affirmitave and offered to telephone Bette to see if she was available to meet Elsie. In no time at all Bette arrived to catch up with the friend she hadn’t seen for eleven years, and catch up they did! “Thank you so much for your kindness. I certainly didn’t expect this.” Elsie said to the staff at the Centre.

Registrations now open for 2018 Emergency Services Day The popular Emergency Services Day is on again this July, and event coordinators are inviting external organisations to register a display for this year’s event. Attracting thousands of people each year, the open day hosts a range of demonstrations and activities and works to equip residents with knowledge of how to be prepared for any emergency or disaster. Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Councillor Tony Williams said this year’s event is set to be another success, and encourages as many organisations as possible to take part. “The Emergency Services Day showcases the great work that our Emergency Services and disaster management partners do, with hands-on and interactive displays for all ages,” Cr Williams said. “It’s a fantastic event and isn’t just a great day out for the family, but also presents vital information on what actions to take before, during and after an emergency event and why it’s important for everyone to take ownership of their own safety. “Event coordinators are encouraging organisations in the Region that have a connection to emergency services or have a service or product that assists the community to be more resilient to be a part of the day. “It’s free to exhibit and is a great way to promote your service and your presence in the community to more than 7,000 people on the day,” Cr Williams said. This year’s event will be held at the Rockhampton Heritage Village from 9am until 2pm on Sunday 29 July. Please register for the Emergency Services day if your organisation provides:

* A service or product that assists our community to be more resilient or safer * Is part of the prevention, preparation, response or recovery phases of disaster/emergency management * Provides preventative information/services to reduce the effects of disease or conditions * Has a connection to emergency services and/or to vulnerable or diverse groups in the community

Gentlefolk Bike Riders Pedal intoBy Graeme Town Meade On a warm but overcast Saturday afternoon the kindly folk from Gentlefolk Single-speed, Fixie and Old Bike Society met up in Mount Morgan to explore some more of the town. Thirty riders turned up with riders ranging in age from 4 to 72, just going to show that almost any one can ride a bike. We left from the gas light in East Street down River Street, across the causeway and rode down Byrnes Parade, a really nice ride along side the Dee River. We stopped at the site of the Mount Morgan gas works, there is a curved red brick retaining wall on the road but at the back there is one remaining chimney. The Mount Morgan Gas and Lighting Company operated from 1901 to 1961, when it started it supplied the hospital and 16 gas lamps, like the one in East Street. There was a large 15 m wide tank for the gas on the lower part, at the back there were the furnaces that turned the coal into coke by extracting the gas.

Leaving the gas works behind we headed up the hill to the railway yards. The first thing we come cross was old mens quarters. However it was the out house that got the most interest. Some of the younger riders had never seen one before. I was surprised by the attention it received. No one could guess what the Tamper Machine was, so I explained. Every one enjoyed looking at the old buildings and machinery, the old Hunslet Steam Engine made for some good photo opportunitys. Saint Mary’s Anglican Church Hall was the next stop for a scrumptious afternoon tea, followed by a tour of the Heritage listed Church. The ride continued on to the Cemetary which everyone found most interesting. The Gentlefolk Single-speed Fixie and Old Bike Society donated $200 to Saint Mary’s Anglican Church, which Parish secretary Rhonda Ramm said was very much appreciated.

My ANZAC Day Experience 2018 By Jim Lynch

Pictured above L-R: Jim Lynch & Ian Traynor place wreaths on the Mount Morgan Cenotaph at Anzac Park.

I went to the dawn service as I’ve done for the last 50 years; I’ve only missed a couple. It was a nice crowd as usual. I was at the School of Arts to assemble for the parade at 10:45am. Eric Stevensen gave me a ride around in the parade in his ex-army 4x4 radio ute. Thanks Eric. After the service I was walking slowly back to my car when a young lady and her son approached me. The young lady held out her hand to shake hands. I took her hand and she said to me “Thank you for your service.” The young lad then stepped forward and did the same thing. “Thank you for your service.” I was stunned. Every ANZAC Day is an emotional day for veterans. This ANZAC day, was even more so for me, because of the young lady and her son. To those young people, complete strangers, if you read this you will know who you are.

Local Hotel Re-opens Its Doors Once Again.

Pictured above L-R: Sandra & Wayne Sigvart and Raelea & Darren.

It is good to see the Golden Nugget Hotel now operating once more. The Golden Nugget Hotel has been part of the town’s history and it was sad to see it closed. The hotel was built in the late 1890’s and was called the Central Hotel till the owner-licensee Sam Sciacca changed the name in 1965 to the Golden Nugget. The present owners are Raelea Eaton and her partner, Darren Cash. Raelea is the youngest daughter of the late Mrs Pam Hoffman. Pam is fondly remembered for her excellent cooking and her many, many years as a volunteer at the local Museum. We wish Raelea and Darren every success in their new venture. We trust Sandra and Wayne Sigvart, the previous owners, are enjoying their retirement.

Thank you very much for your wonderful consideration. You made this ANZAC Day a special day for me to remember. You made my day.

Progressive Dinner a Winner

Progressive Dinners were very popular in the seventies and MMPAD executives were pleased to bring this almost forgotten event back into the limelight once again.

On Saturday the 28th April, forty-one people participated in the progressive dinner, which George & Barbara Friesacher began at the Leichhardt Hotel at 5.30pm with pre dinner drinks and a finger food entree. A lucky door was drawn at each venue and Janice Mugridge was the winner of the first lucky door prize. Next stop was for mains at the Grand Hotel where we enjoyed a roast meal and a few drinks. Congratulations to Kev Crawford who won the second lucky draw prize for the night. The final stop was the Railway Hotel where tea, coffee and an assortment of delicious cheese cakes were on offer. The final lucky door winner was Deslea Crough.

Merv & Patricia Patterson

Good food, friends and a few drinks made for an enjoyable evening. It was also a chance to meet new friends and catch up with old friends not seen in a while. “When are we having the next one?” was the evening’s resounding comment. So watch this space for details of our next Progressive Dinner. MMPAD would like to thank everyone who joined us on the night; the hotel licencees, staff, and John Steinberger, for the excellent service collecting and delivering everyone safely home.
