WATERWAY WORKS HELP CLEAR VEGETATION
Works are underway at the Mount Morgan Dam to reduce the amount of vegetation currently in the waterway.
“Much of the vegetation is weeds and when these rot due to being submerged, it significantly reduces oxygen levels in the water.
Councillor for Water and Environmental Sustainability Donna Kirkland said the works are being carried out by Fitzroy River Water crews and are expected to be wrapped up by the end of the year.
This of course can cause problems for the aquatic life and water quality so it’s really important to do this.
“There is a lot of vegetation in the Mount Morgan Dam at the moment,” said Cr Kirkland. “Around 30,000 square metres – that’s at least three rugby fields. “The main reason we need to remove it is that when the Dam fills again it will create some issues if left untreated.
“The work is being done with the help of heavy machinery and is set to be completed in the next two to three weeks, weather permitting.” Divisional Councillor Cherie Rutherford said it was great to see the works underway. “It can be tricky to find the right balance for these kinds of projects as they need to be carried out in times when the weeds won’t grow back too quickly but also before water levels rise too high and the
weeds become submerged,” Cr Rutherford said. “We also have a requirement to remove trees and saplings within five metres of the Dam wall regularly in order to ensure tree roots are not near the structure, so part of the works currently underway include that ongoing maintenance. “The recreational area of the Dam will remain open while the works are being undertaken to ensure all can still enjoy the spot over the school holidays.” A drone photo of No.7 Dam taken in October 2021 with the increased vegetation clearly evident. MINE FRESHWATER DAM UPGRADE
The Department of Resources has completed a $1.6 million project to upgrade the Mount Morgan mine site’s freshwater Dam 8 and install additional pumping to divert clean water runoff away from the open cut pit. A Department of Resources spokesperson said the project included civil works to establish a secure upstream embankment, including installation of a HDPE liner to seal the dam 10m above an historic weir, and installation of the additional pumping infrastructure. Although the Dam 8 level is still

empty, the works completed increased its capacity five-fold, from 176ML to 900ML. This will divert about 80 per cent of the clean water that flows into the dam during heavy rain, reducing the amount of contaminated water that has to be managed. “The greater capacity we have in the pit, the less chance there is of having mine-affected water flow offsite,” the spokesperson said. Water management activities including treatment and evaporation had reduced the pit level this year to its lowest level in
20 years, setting the site up well to cope with wet season rainfall. The water level in the open cut pit is currently 5.502 metres below the spillway level. The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting higher than average rainfall totals across eastern Australia due to La Nina conditions and already the site has recorded close to 400mm since 1 October 2021. The Department of Resources continues to monitor closely the impacts of drainage from the site on the water quality of the Dee River.

$4.5 million pool makeover
Mount Morgan’s 70 plus year old swimming pool is set for a major makeover following Rockhampton Regional Council’s successful application with Resources Community Infrastructure Fund (RCIF). At Council’s December’s ordinary meeting, a document was tabled outlining the current status of the pool and supporting infrastructure and detailing the scope of redevelopment. The document states that the existing pool and supporting facilities and infrastructure at the pool site had reached the end of its use by date. The report also states that the pool is not up to current standards for all ability access, water usage and quality management which could pose equality and reputational issues for council. “The object of the project is to deliver a fully redeveloped Aquatic Recereation Centre in line with contremporary facility practices and planning requirements. Page 6
“The following elements are considered essential in meeting this scope - demolition of existing structures on site including the unused squash court structure, site upgrade (power, sewer and water) and construction of new pool - 25 m x 8 lane, wet deck and tiled concourse, entry ladders, starting blocks and installation of filtration and sanitation plant equipment including water harvesting, shade structure (half pool), splash pad/ we play and shade structures, change rooms, amenities and entry kiosk of sufficient size for the complex, installation of portable grandstands, landscaping, lighting and fencing and car park resurfacing,” the report said. Mayor Tony Williams said this funding program was created to support economic and social infrastructure in resources communities and the Mount Morgan Pool was a perfect fit. “Thanks to this funding from the State Government, we’re excited to be able to move into design development shortly, with work MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS
expected to begin in the latter part of 2022. “It won’t be a secret to anyone who has been to the complex in recent years that it is in need of some major work. The main pool is beyond end of life - it has cracking tiles, non-compliant disabled access and has had many leaks over the years, losing large amounts of water. “As the only pool within a 25 km radius, it serves a critical role, not just for Mount Morgan, but also for surrounding communities,” the Mayor said. Councillor Cherie Rutherford said Council’s vision was to create a redeveloped Aquatic Centre that would meet the needs of the community now and into the future. “I know many in the community have enjoyed using the current swimming pool for school swimming lessons, general exercise, parties and social outings. It has been a wonderful asset for many years,” she said. 22 December 2021 to 2 February 2022

HERITAGE MINERALS UPDATE
Photo supplied by Busby Films The Directors and Management of Heritage Minerals would like to wish the Mount Morgan community a very Merry Christmas as we come to the end of 2021, A year that has brought many challenges, to say the least. Heritage Minerals would like to thank the Community for the messages of support we have received at our two public information days: the Mount Morgan Show and the Mount Morgan Wattle Day hosted by MMPAD.
the Open Cut Pit. We will then move formally into the construction stage in mid-2022. Please enjoy the coming holidays and festivities safely, and we look forward to providing ongoing updates in the new year. Submitted by Shane Charlton General Manager - Heritage Minerals Pty Ltd Mount Morgan Mine.
While 2021 has had its challenges, Heritage minerals have forged ahead with some significant milestones achieved in 2021 regarding permitting for the project. Over the past few months, the site has been visited by Senior Politicians, Members of Local and State Government, and Senior Bureaucrats. All have expressed their support to see the project succeed and, importantly, the ongoing positive effects for the Mount Morgan community. The future is bright as we turn our attention to New Year. Early civil works will start in the first quarter with the construction of an Access Road and a Coffer Dam, bridging the gap between the Open Cut Pit and the old Sandstone Tailings Dam. This will contribute considerably to lowering the water level in Page 10

Christmas Eve 1907 ‘… The [Mount Morgan] brass band, under the baton of Mr. H. Richards, after a long spell made their reappearance in front of the premises of the Grand Hotel, and played a number of airs. The [Mount Morgan] Salvation Army band [pictured] was also out. The shops continued open until eleven o’clock [at night]. The Mount Morgan Gold-mining Company generously paid their employees this afternoon [Tuesday, 24 December 1907], although their usual pay day was not until Friday. This kindly forethought of the company [with Captain Richard as the general manager] allowed many of their employees to fully enjoy their Christmas. The men have also been allowed nine days’ holiday in those portions of the mine and works that could be closed down for so long a period …’ (‘Christmas Eve’, Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton, Qld. : 1878-1954), 25 December 1907). The Mount Morgan branch of the Salvation Army had its own brass band (pictured). It was one of several local bands that entertained the community. Other bands included the Mount Morgan Brass Band, the Mount Morgan String Band and the Pipers’ Band. Page 14
The bands performed Christmas carols in the streets to create a magical Christmas atmosphere for adults and children alike. Their repertoire would have comprised popular carols from the Victorian era, such as ‘Silent Night’, ‘Away in a Manger’ and ‘Good King Wenceslas’. c. 1911 Mount Morgan Salvation Army Band, a fixture at Mount Morgan Christmas festivities / Ten Salvation Army officers with their brass musical instruments, drum and flag / Band-sergeant with cornet (seated centre) / Drummer with drumstick (standing far right) / Flag-bearer (standing centre) / Slate board (top left) reads: ‘Grand Army Jubilee Saturday and Sunday February 11th and 12th’ Drum (below left) reads: ‘The Salvation Army Mount Morgan Band’. The Rotary Club of Mount Morgan would like to take this opportunity to thank the Mount Morgan and surrounding areas for their support during 2021. This year we have contributed approximately $13 000.00 back into our local community. In 2021 we contributed to projects such as a flagpole for the Mount Morgan High School, the end of year Primary and High School awards nights, the MMHS year 10 North Keppel Island Camps, Australia Day activities and Rotary Youth Driver Awareness. In 2021 we were invited by Rotary Australia World Community Service to host drought relief BBQs in neighbouring communities such as Wowan and Banana. These events were a success and appreciated by people who were doing it tough. As well as the ongoing projects for 2022, we are investigating the Blue Tree Project and hope to have one in our town next year. The Rotary Club of Mount Morgan relies mostly on funds raised by the Club through the selfless time and efforts of its members and volunteers. Funds are raised through ongoing events such as the 100club, the Baree markets, an Easter Raffle, a Mother’s Day Raffle, a Father’s Day raffle, the Wattle Day markets, a Melbourne Cup Sweep, a Christmas Raffle, Rockhampton North Rotary Calendars and Souvenir of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co. limited books. These are just some things we do to raise funds to contribute back to our local community. The Club would like to thank you, the local community for your continual support at our fund-raising events.

THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video
Movie Review MARE OF EASTTOWN Kate Winslet is a truly sublime actress, and she just keeps getting better and better. Shooting to global stardom in 1997 in what was at the time, the highest grossing movie in history, TITANIC, Kate was only 21 years old, but had already been working in the industry, acting, for six years. Since then she has been recognised with an Academy Award, British Academy Film Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Golden Globes, Primetime Emmy Awards - oh, and a Grammy. Recently we were awestruck by her performance in the 2020 film, AMMONITE, inspired by the life of Mary Anning, an early nineteenth century British palaeontologist. She was a woman of few words and fewer social skills, gruff and businesslike - but she was a person of deep and powerful emotions capable of great love and intense feelings
which she always had difficulty in expressing. Watching the subtleties and deft nuances of Kate’s portrayal of this woman was a revelation - the smallest twitch of the tiniest muscle at the corner of the mouth, the slightest raise of one eyebrow and the nervous momentary glance to one side, moving nothing but the eyes... Her performance was truly astounding and the film is well worth seeing just for that. This time we find Kate, as life crumbles around her, the sole detective in a small Pennsylvania town, investigating the murder of a local teenage girl. She has created yet another iconic character in detective Mare Sheehan, MARE OF EASTTOWN. Mare is a worn down, brutally honest, beerswilling cop and local basketball

legend who must cope with the loss of her own son whilst dealing with her nosy mother, her rebellious teenage daughter and grandson at home, and an ex-husband who has moved in just a stone’s throw away with his new fiancée. Just as the earlier case of a missing girl grows cold, the murder of a teenage girl in Easttown heaps immense additional pressure on Mare to find the killer in a town where everybody knows everyone, and all are potential suspects. Once again, Kate Winslet is absolutely riveting in her performance. Also featuring our own brilliantly versatile Guy Pearce and regular favourite, the wonderful Julianne Nicholson, MARE OF EASTTOWN is rated MA15+ for “strong themes and violence”. Brilliant! A YEAR OF CHALLENGES FOR MOUNT MORGAN’S CWA Well this year has certainly passed quickly. There have been many challenges which have changed the way we do things and yes COVID has played a big part as it has for everyone. Yet we are still very much a part of the community. Our branch is now very strong with 15 members and we hope to see that number grow.
New Members are always welcome. If you would like to find out more please give us a call. We are more than happy to help.
In the last six months we have had many functions including an International Women’s Day at the dam, and we were joined by local residents and visiting Q.C.W.A. Members from other branches. We held a Country Kitchens Workshop at the Bowls Club. The Country Kitchens Programme helps to showcase how you can eat and be healthy at the same time. It showcases to sit less move more, eat more fruit and vegetables, be aware of sugar in you drinks, portion size and cook at home. This year our branch gained another Country Kitchens Facilitator who is ‘’Gillian Mooney’. Many of you will know Gillian as she works at the Hub for Uniting Care. The Country Kitchens Programme shows you how to use alternative ingredients in many dishes but you do not lose the taste you enjoy.
To the Mount Morgan Community from the members of the Mount Morgan Q.C.W.A. we would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. If you would like to find out more, please call me on 0428457461 or email arleneroberts@ bigpond.com from Arlene Roberts Branch President
In 2022 we have functions planned and extra functions as the Q.C.W.A. State wide will be celebrating 100 years. Look out for the notices of events in the New Year.
Guest speakers including Capricorn Catchments have come along to our meetings and we have enjoyed the talk. This year we held a tree planting morning at the State School where we planted two native’’ Burdekin Plum Trees’’, and these are doing really well. Thank you to the Rockhampton Council for donating the trees and to the Mount Morgan State School for allowing us to do so. We also encourage our school children, and we give an award each year for the most improved in grade six. We hope to continue this next year and we have more ideas in place. We also help school children on the islands as a part of our International Work. This year we sold our old Q.C.W.A. Building and we moved into the Hub to hold our meetings. I would like to thank the ladies at the Hub for all of their support including Tammy Alden and Leonie Wovat. Leonie helped to implement having the Country Kitchens Workshop and this resulted in eight new members and since then we have gained more members. Thank you also goes to Donna Anderson, Savanah Alden and Raylene Hayes.

BE CYCLONE PREPARED Cyclone Preparedness - Information
Joining The SES
• Cyclones are part of life in Queensland, so don’t be caught unaware this cyclone season.
• By joining the State Emergency Service (SES) you will make a life changing commitment through actively contributing during disasters and emergencies locally, state-wide and nationally.
• Cyclones and severe storms can produce hail, flooding rain, lightning, winds greater than 200km/h and storm surges which can have devastating effects on communities. • Pay attention to weather forecasts during cyclone season (November–April) and always take action if a cyclone warning is issued in your area. Keeping informed will help you protect your family and property. • Preparing your home is an important step towards your family being prepared for, surviving and coping with natural disasters like cyclones. • Ahead of cyclone season, check the condition of your roof, repair loose tiles, eaves and screws and clean gutters and downpipes so water can drain away as quickly as possible during a downpour. • It’s important to trim trees and overhanging branches and secure loose items that could cause damage if blown around in high winds, such as garden furniture and toys. • Ensure your home, contents and car insurance is current and covers your assets adequately. • Identify which room is the strongest part of your house, in case you need to shelter in your home during a severe cyclone. Make sure everyone in your family is aware of which room this is, usually the smallest room in the house, with the least windows. • Identify where and how to turn off the main supply for water, power and gas at your home and take time to purchase emergency essentials to have on hand, such as: containers to store drinking water, a spare supply of fuel for use in your vehicle, wide masking tape for windows, and hessian bags and sand for sandbagging indoor drains to prevent sewerage backwash from flooding. • Make sure you are familiar with the different types of cyclone warning messages issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM). • When coastal communities are expected to be affected within 48 hours by winds associated with a cyclone, the BoM can issue a series of Tropical Cyclone WATCH advices. When the threat is likely to affect the community within 24 hours this advice will be upgraded to a Tropical Cyclone WARNING. • Find out more information at: http://www.bom. gov.au/cyclone/about/warnings/ • For more info on preparing for cyclone season, visit www.getready.qld.gov.au/ Page 18
• As an SES volunteer you can respond to many different types of disasters and emergencies including; cyclones, storms, floods, forensic searches, earthquakes, cliff rescues, crashes, landslides and searches for missing persons. • Not all SES roles are operational. Roles can vary from group to group depending on their operational capacity. Check with your local SES Group to see what you can do to support your community. • There are no joining fees to volunteer with the SES. Volunteers are provided with protective clothing and relevant equipment based on their role within an SES Group. • Education and training programs are also provided free of charge. You could expect to learn first aid, map reading and navigation, rescue from heights and depths, storm damage response, leadership and team-building skills by joining the SES. There is an expectation for members to regularly attend training and support during activations where possible. Mount Morgan Group Our group train once a fortnight approximately 2 – 3 hours 7 – 10 pm on a Monday night, our last training night for 2021 is 20 December and we recommence on Monday the 17 January 2022 at 7pm. A MESSAGE FROM STEPHEN ANDREW MEMBER FOR MIRANI Seasons Greetings to everyone, 2021 has been a somewhat trying Year for many in the regions. 2022 will bring new challenges that we will all face together. It is also a time to help and support the less fortunate that have faced job losses and uncertainty in our Business Communities so please seek out these people and give assistance in any way you can. The Christmas Spirt will always shine through so share lots of laughs with Family, Friends and neighbours, laugh loud and often. Remember to keep the smiles coming way into the New Year, be generous loving and kind to others. From my family and myself, have the Merriest Christmas you ever had and the biggest New Year celebration that you can muster. God Bless you all, stay safe on your travels and see you in 2022. Stephen Andrew
LIBRARY NEWS In a Morning Bulletin article from 16 May 1902, the Mount Morgan School of Arts Library Committee reported that that there had been thirty-two new books added to the library during the month, fourteen more had been ordered, but were not yet delivered and fourteen had also been ordered for June. A total of 447 books and fifty-nine magazines had been circulated during the month of May. Fast forward to December 2021 and the resources available to the Mount Morgan community at the Council library tell a very different story. Every week a delivery of new stock from the Library’s Administration office is received at the Mount Morgan Library. This can include new adult and children’s fiction and non-fiction books, large print books, DVDs, audio books, music CDs, magazines, newspapers, and console games. Residents of Mount Morgan can also access a staggering range of online resources such as eBooks, eAudiobooks, streamed movies, databases, digital magazines, comics and graphic novels, and online learning courses. These are added to the collection
on a regular basis, so keep an eye out for new content. All these great resources are available via the online library catalogue and internet PCs in Mount Morgan Library or at home from your own device. The charming Mount Morgan Library - located at 31 Morgan Street, Mount Morgan - is air-conditioned with an open and inviting layout to encourage browsing the shelves or accessing the computers. The friendly library staff are happy to help find a suitable story, musical score or out of print book with resources from library branches in the Rockhampton Regional Council Library Service or other libraries able to be sourced. Don’t forget that the Mount Morgan Library is open during the Christmas/New Year period as per standard opening days and hours, excepting gazetted public holidays (which includes both Saturday, 25 December 2021 and Saturday, 1 January 2022). *Please note the earlier closure of 3.00pm on Friday 24 December.
