As the Golden Mount Festival and the Rodeo are now past the Pride Team would like to add their congratulations to Eve-Lyn and Barbara and both working committees for their wonderful effort resulting in such success for the town. Hopefully you will all remain united and give the 40th a “Big Hit.” This week’s story is in the early days of Mount Morgan when the Chinese people were here in great numbers. One very interesting event happened in September of 1891, when Lee Ying, a Chinese merchant was found with his head laid open by someone who had yielded a tomahawk with murderous intent to kill him on the previous night. Lee Ying remained conscious and before being removed from his home the local policeman Constable Martin Mooney paraded three Chinese men in front of him and Lee Ying pointed to Hop Kee as his assailant. The other Chinese men agreed that it was Hop Kee also. Hop Kee replied “I don’t know. Me no kill him no one”. Despite his denial Hop Kee was sentenced to death on April 22 1892 after his case was heard in the Supreme Court in Rockhampton.

$1350.00

Instead of swinging from a rope in Boggo Road, Hop Kee was set free one day before his execution date through the extraordinary efforts of a Queensland policeman sent to Mount Morgan. The policeman, Sergeant Michael O’Sullivan (who rose to the rank of Deputy Commissioner before his retirement in 1920) took over the Mount Morgan station and was struck by the nature of the evidence in Hop Kee’s case and found it far from satisfactory.

way Hotel l i a R Mount Morgan

He made a careful examination of the facts and circumstances and was convinced there had been a miscarriage of justice. After some time he dispatched his report to the Attorney General as follows “I despatched my reports pointing out what I considered to be some serious discrepancies and very weak points in the evidence of which the Rockhampton jury had convicted the unfortunate man, and added facts I had discovered by personal investigations which pointed almost convincingly to the guilt of another man who has since died.”

I was satisfied that nearly every Chinese who gave evidence against Hop Kee was unfriendly towards him and had lied deliberately. They all knew he was not guilty but were covering up a crime for one of their own clique and fixing it on Hop Kee. Hop Kee returned to Mount Morgan on his release and became one of the town’s most successful business men. He married an European lass and Hop Kee was so thankful to Sergeant O’Sullivan he named his first son, Michael in his honour. Apparently Hop Kee was a good fellow in every way, and I was more than pleased to have been able to have taken him from the gallows”. This story was taken from the Book “The way we were” by Ken Blanch in October 1991. As usual Think Clean Be Tidy, and please use the Bins.

Look for the signs Local community group Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Incorporated are wrapping up a project that has combined local town history with modern technology. Through a grant funded by the Qld Dept of Environment & Heritage totalling over $9,000, the local group have revamped the visitor information signs around the town, highlighting historic attractions and key points of interest. “The original signs were introduced around twelve years ago and were in need of an upgrade,” MMPAD said on the project. “Through this project we’ve been able to create new designs and reskin each of the original signs, with grant funding covering each heritage location and our group funding the remaining sites.” But a new and improved look wasn’t just all the local group had in mind. The revamped signs also come complete with QR codes which now allow visitors an opportunity to learn more about each important location from long term local residents. “We wanted to take a new approach to the information we were providing visitors, and thought what better way to learn about our town than from locals who know about the sites personally,” MMPAD said.

“Over the past months we have been carrying out short interviews with a number of well-known and long term locals who have been kind enough to go on camera and provide personal accounts on particular attractions and sites. “For example, one of our interviewees is long term local and first female office manager at the Mine Site, Bette Broom. Visitors now looking at the Mine Site from the Frank Golding Lookout have the opportunity to scan the Lookout’s sign and download a short video of Bette talking about her days at the Mine.” Further examples include information on the School of Arts, as told by Chris O’Leary; working at the Mine as told by Frank Ware and Ken Reid, details on Mount Morgan’s Cultural Ties, as told by Phillip Toby; and more.

Over the upcoming weeks, MMPAD will finalise the project with the purchase and installation of three completely new signs for important attractions currently without signage. These will include the Mount Morgan Gold Room, the Mount Morgan Rail Station and ANZAC Park. MMPAD said the project has been a long time coming and it’s exciting to see it come to fruition. “We are really excited to see it all come together because it’s a great project all round. We have new, improved signs, completely new signs, and a personal way of preserving some of our wonderful local stories. “We sincerely thank all who have been involved in the project along the way, especially the Queensland Government.”

COMING FROM THE COMMITTEES

The Golden Mount Festival wraps up

Frank Molloy and Mayor Margaret Strelow

By Eve-lyn Rogers

Wow! What an incredible Golden Mount Festival… Almost two weeks after the event and we are still receiving positive feedback. Thank you to all who have provided feedback through Facebook and other channels and don’t forget there is still an opportunity to win $100 by providing feedback. Simply complete the forms located at IGA and Mount Morgan News Xpress. This year’s festival was sponsored by a variety of sponsors, from Mount Morgan, Rockhampton and other locations. The Golden Mount Festival thanks the following sponsors – Rockhampton Regional Council, the Morning Bulletin, Win News, 4RO, Sea FM, Hot FM, Stanwell Power Station, Frenchville Sports Club, Bel Canto Singing and Music Academy, IGA Mount Morgan, Mount Morgan Hot Bread Shop, NewsXpress Mount Morgan, Grand Hotel Mount Morgan, MM Show Society, Ergon Energy, Rock Bank, Smalls Trading Co, Garrets Camera House, Everything Yummy, Kindness Promotions, Masters, Kanickers Nails, Mayor Margaret Strelow, CR Cherie Rutherford, Mr Mojo, Fox Video, the White Elephant Burger Bar, Dianne Coburn, Eve-lyn Rogers, Kym Baker and Cass and Aaron Donald.

I would also like to thank the volunteers from the Rock as well as Lisa Ferguson and Graham Crane, Tracy Little, Reetha Fay-Tull, Brian Cox, Ben Lodewikus, Lesley Scorgie, Debbie Dawes, Nicholai Von Tonslamann, the M.A.D. program volunteers – Jocelyn, Annmarie, Andrew, Zach, Gabby, Whitney, Kaitlyn, Matthew, and anyone else who contributed by donating their time to help out over the Festival weekend. Thank you also to Phillip Toby for doing the Welcome to Country. A special mention must got to Lisa Ferguson and Graham Crane who showed up on Saturday morning and just got stuck in and worked. These two young people have truly made me proud to be in Mount Morgan. These two young people have no connections with the Festival Association, but just wanted to help. Their attitude was such a breath of fresh air. One of the major highlights of the Golden Mount Festival was the presentation of Life Memberships to four community stalwarts – Frank Molloy, Michael Rowe, Veronica Clancy and Morrie Lloyd (posthumous). The Golden Mount Festival Association changed its rules in 2015 to admit two new classes of membership – Junior Members and Life Members.

The stipulation for Life Membership recipients is that they have actively served five or more consecutive years on the Golden Mount Festival Association. These four people have contributed well over 30 years to the Golden Mount Festival Association, often with little thanks. Frank Molloy served on the committee from 1992 to 2003 and was president for nine festivals; Michael Rowe and Veronica were also members for nine years and festivals, while Morrie served for six festivals. This is a tremendous effort and I was really proud to help Mayor Margaret Strelow present the Life Membership Medallions to these very worthy recipients. Awarding of Life Memberships is ongoing and if you know of someone who meets the criteria please do not hesitate to get in touch with the Secretary, Cass Donald. There are some great things happening within the Festival Association in the next couple of months and some even greater things planned for our 40th birthday celebrations, not the least of which will be the announcing of the 2017 Golden Mount Festival theme. Thank you to all the members who put in an awesome effort over the weekend.

What was your favourite part of the Golden Mount Festival Weekend?

Veronica Clancy

Flip Toby “I was only here for the Saturday of the Festival but for me the best parts were seeing familiar faces and old friends coming back to town. Also the Running the Cutter, full pubs, good weather. Good day all round.”

Michael Rowe

Tara Simpson “I always love the Parade. The whole community, bussinesses and groups coming together. The lengths everyone goes to for their floats is always impressive.”

We were very happy to present Tyson Ireland with a rodeo shirt adorned with the logo that he created in last year’s competition, and I’m sure he felt very proud when he saw his work transformed onto our flag, again thank you Tyson and Mount Morgan Central School for your help with this project. The Lindi Picnic Day was a delight and was a resounding success according to everyone present. As part of the day, many games were held. The kids and adults enjoying them tremendously, to the point that when a break was called, the kids just made up their own games and kept going.

Dawn Lennox “The way the whole weekend caters to everyone’s taste. Saturday is for everyone, then there’s the rodeo on Sunday, the kids’ day on Monday. There’s always so much to see and do.”

One of the highlights of the day was the Lindi Boot Throwing competition which was won by Che Anderson who was presented with a personal trophy and will have his name on the perpetual trophy as well. The Broom throwing was won by Karen Johnson with a prize of a voucher from the Golden Nugget Hotel. A great day to finish off an awesome weekend. Thank you to all involved.

Carbines site geologist Trevor Pilcher is showing Graham Brock (Non-executive Director), Chris Newman (Geology Manager) and John Fitzgerald (Chairman) some of the drilled tailings in Mundic Gully.

The new Managing Director, Tony James said “It was a great chance for us to visit the mine and review the drilling activities. The company currently has over 20 different specialists working on the Definitive Feasibility Study including the current drilling on site. Council seeks to collaborate with local agenies to address unemployment Rockhampton Regional Council is seeking to collaborate with local agencies to develop job creation and preparation initiatives in the Region. Agencies are invited to submit proposals for employment support initiatives such as workforce preparation strategies, opportunities for work experience and support for the development and start-up of new businesses and enterprises. Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said partnering with agencies will help to identify what job opportunities are available.

“Though collaboration we can combine resources and knowledge to help address the specific workforce issues that are unique to our Region,” Mayor Strelow said. Mayor Strelow said Council is looking for an action plan with deliverables. “Whether there is a way to better prepare or upskill workers or help youth get a foothold, we need to find the appropriate strategies and initiatives that will create job outcomes,” she said.

“It’s about getting back to what we know we do well and getting people trained in the right areas.” Agencies that can provide opportunities to collaborate with Council to improve the efficiency of the labour market and job outcomes for the Region are encouraged to submit their applications to Council’s Rockhampton Customer Service Centre or email tenders@rrc.qld.gov. au by 4pm Friday, 27 May 2016. ART & ENTERTAINMENT

Melinda brings Doris to the stage By Sean Fox Doris Day was one of Hollywood’s most golden stars. Aussie country music sensation, Melinda Schneider will be bringing Doris Day’s story to the stage when her Melinda Does Doris show hits the Pilbeam Theatre on 8th June.

The ‘Melinda Does Doris’ show will include 26 of Doris Day’s classic songs.

“She (Doris) went bankrupt; her third husband lost all of her money!” Melinda added.

Melinda has a special connection to Rockhampton.

Melinda will be performing one of Doris Day’s most beloved tunes, Que Sera Sera in addition to songs from her biggest films including; Pillow Talk, Calamity Jane and Love me or leave me.

That was not all; Melinda says that Doris even had a close brush with Charles Manson. Melinda admires that Doris is a survivor and has risen above all of her hard times.

“My mum was born in Rocky; in Dawson Road,” Melinda said.

“I’ll be telling the amazing story of Doris Day’s life,” Melinda said.

‘I feel like I have a bit of a link to Rocky’, Melinda added.

It’s a story that fascinates Melinda and one which she loves telling people.

“I love performing to regional audiences because they’re real people!” Melinda said.

Rockhampton played a part in Melinda’s 2004 tune, Real People. “I actually shot the video clip for my song Real People in Rockhampton…I mention Rockhampton in the song,” Melinda said.

“It’s a really emotional show, it makes people happy,” Melinda said. “I make them laugh, I make them cry, I take them on an emotional journey,” Melinda explained.

Melinda’s favourite part of the show is meeting people afterwards.

Doris Day’s life was not always as glamorous as it appeared.

“Nothing makes me happier than coming to regional areas, like Rocky, to do my thing and get to speak to everyone after the show,” Melinda said.

“Nobody really knows behind that beautiful, happy, girl next door image she actually had a very tumultuous life with four terrible marriages,” Melinda said.

“Doris always put on a happy face and just got on with it, no matter what was going on with her personal life,” Melinda explained. “She’s a great singer, a wonderful actress, an incredible dancer and comedian and a likeable, beautiful person; I admire all of that…but the fact that she’s just reached 92 and she’s outlived everyone, that’s the biggest inspiration for me,” Melinda said. Tickets for the unmissable Melinda Does Doris show are available now. Make sure to visit h t t p : / / w w w. s e e i t l i v e . c o m . a u / or phone (07) 4927 4111 for all ticketing information.

It was fantastic to be in and around Mount Morgan over the Golden Mount Festival weekend and be able to see some of the many activities in action. It was also good to see that police had to deal with very little trouble, considering how many people were in town and the extended operating hours of some hotels. At times the hotels were overflowing with patrons with most drinking and acting responsibly and not causing any trouble or interfering with the experience of others. On a disappointing note we did apprehend two drink drivers and one drug driver on our roads. Some people are just not getting the message. Everyone should be aware of the danger of alcohol and drug affected driving, and how often alcohol is a major contribution to road crashes causing injury and death. When you put the keys in the ignition and drive away, you’re making a bad decision that can affect your driver’s licence as a result of you being charged with the offence of DUI, but you are also putting your life at risk and the lives of all those you come across on the road. Alcohol affects you in ways that changes your judgement, depth perception, as well as vital motor skills required to drive safely. It’s easy to think that you are driving normally, when the reality is you are not. Along with Speeding, Distraction and In Attention, Failing to Wear Seat Belts and Driving Tired, Alcohol and Drug Affected Driving make up the FATAL FIVE. Take a cab, protect yourself as well as others on the road and don’t become another statistic. Make the right choice and put your keys down!

LOCAL HISTORY

The pioneer Cornes brothers: in their father’s footsteps By Catherine McIntosh Sydney resident and descendant of the colonial Stubbs family of Mount Morgan.

Pictured is a rare double portrait of the Cornes brothers, taken in Robertsons Studio Mount Morgan in the 1890s. The Cornes brothers built many prominent buildings in a young Mount Morgan, including the early ambulance station in Central Street and the former Olympia Theatre in East Street. They were also leaders of local organisations. Born in the former gold mining town of Thames, New Zealand, the Cornes brothers arrived in Mount Morgan as boys with their family in 1886. They served carpentry apprenticeships under their father, Scottish-born Thomas Glen Cornes (18421903), chief architect and builder at the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company. Their father built many of Mount Morgan’s original buildings, such as the General Office building and the first hospital. Two of his buildings are now heritage-listed: Saint Mary’s Anglican Church and the Mount Morgan Masonic Temple. The two brothers followed their father into the carpentry and building trade. Elder brother, Thomas Thompson (Tom) Cornes (1872-1933) (pictured right), was the chief patternmaker at the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company. He later bought a local building and undertaking business in 1911. He named the business, T.T. & C. Cornes (‘T.T. & C.’ represents his and his wife’s initials). In April 1913, Tom Cornes won the tender to design and build an ambulance centre in Central Street at a cost of £439, exclusive of hardwood. The new two-storied wooden ambulance building was officially opened on Saturday, 26 July 1913. The Mount Morgan Ambulance celebrated its centenary in 2013, on the same Saturday in July.

Other projects of Tom Cornes were outlined in the Morning Bulletin in 1913: ‘Mr T.T. Cornes, the contractor, ... kindly furnished some particulars of three big jobs which he has on hand - the erection of the new Presbyterian Church at the corner of East and Dee Streets, the Protestant Hall on the Rockhampton Road [now James Street], and the improvements and additions to the Olympia Hall in East Street’. Younger brother, John (Jack) Cornes (1876-1935) (pictured left), was the foreman on the project to build the new Olympia Theatre over the existing old theatre in 1913. The brothers were also actively involved in local organisations. Jack Cornes was the elected Master of the Mount Morgan Masonic Lodge in 1917-18 and a life member. Tom Cornes was the mayor of Mount Morgan in the 1920s, a life member of the Q.A.T.B. and the chairman of the Hospital Committee. Similarly, their father had been the first elected Master of the Mount Morgan Masonic Lodge in 1889-90. He had also been the chairman of many local committees, including the Hospital Committee.

Jack Cornes left Mount Morgan in 1925 to manage his brother’s funeral parlour in Gympie. He owned the business from about 1931 until his death in 1935 (aged 59). The business remained in his family until the 1980s. Tom Cornes died at 60 years in Mount Morgan in 1933. His business passed to his son, Thomas Glen Cornes (1898-1948) (who was named after Tom Cornes’ father). The son purchased Mount Morgan’s first motorised hearse in 1938, a 1921 model Buick, which is displayed at the Mount Morgan Historical Museum. Most of the buildings of the Cornes brothers no longer exist in Mount Morgan. Fire destroyed the ambulance building in 1928 and the Olympia Theatre in 1976. The Protestant Hall was sold to a picture showman in 1934 and relocated to Townsville. Yet the Presbyterian Church still stands. The Cornes brothers were carpenters, builders, undertakers and community leaders. Continuing their father’s work, they served their local community and built the early foundations of Mount Morgan.

Lorikeets Away By Wayne Alden

Since our last report the Mount Morgan Lorikeets Rugby Union team have played two matches away from home, the first on May 7th against Frenchville Pioneers in Yeppoon and on May 14th the team travelled to play Gladstone in the port city. Against Frenchville the team was looking to go one step further than the previous week’s draw and achieve their first win of the season. Despite the heavy dominance of the referee’s whistle the lorikeets were able to put together some periods of good play in the first half to take an 8 points to nil lead into the half time break. In the second half the whistle continued to dominate but again the lorikeets were able to put points on the board to stretch the lead out to 20-0 before Frenchville scored a consolation try on full time to leave the final score at Mt Morgan 20 Frenchville 5. Mt Morgan’s player of the match was Dean Leggo for his mountain of work around the field and for scoring his first try of the season.

Travelling to Gladstone to take on the “grufs” is always a challenging task, one made even harder on this occasion by the fact that thirteen Mt Morgan players from the previous week’s team were absent this week. Gladstone took advantage of Mt Morgan players playing out of position, scoring two early tries to go 12 points ahead. It looked as though the game may turn into a rout but a reshuffle of the defensive line and a hardened resolve from Mt Morgan kept Gladstone tryless for the rest of the first half. A late Gladstone penalty goal extended their lead at half time to 15-nil. In the second half Mt Morgan continued to fight back, scoring and converting the first try, cutting Gladstone’s lead to 15-7.

Unfortunately for Mt Morgan, Gladstone was then able to hit back with a converted try of their own, pushing the lead back out to 15 points. With time running short this lead proved too much for Mt Morgan to overcome, although they were able to score a try on the final whistle leaving the final score at Gladstone 22 Mt Morgan 14. Mt Morgan’s player of the match was not awarded to a specific player in order to recognise the whole team’s great effort and determination in difficult circumstances. The lorikeets now have back to back home games, the first a return match against Gladstone on Saturday 21st May at 3pm and the second against Colts on May 28th also at 3pm.
