MEALS ON WHEELS KEEP MOVING
SHOW CANCELLED FOR 2020
Mount Morgan children will have to wait until 2021 to buy a showbag following the Mount Morgan Show Society’s decision to cancel the 2020 Show. The Mount Morgan Show, which was to be held on 8 August 2020, has been cancelled due to Covid-19. President, Brian Glover said the decision had not been taken lightly and took into consideration the best advice available. It was in the community’s interest that this year’s Show not go ahead. Meals on wheels keep on moving...from front page Throughout the pandemic lockdown, one devoted group of volunteers ensured that Mount Morgan’s elderly were well catered for. The dedicated volunteers (under 20) from Mount Morgan Meals on Wheels kept delivering the meals three times a week throughout the shutdown.
Brain said he and his small dedicated committee would now focus on ensuring that the 2021 Show to be held on 7 August 2021 is bigger and better than ever. This will give Mount Morgan residents an additional year to create their crafts and grow their plants for 2021, which will hopefully increase the number of entries in the pavilion. The volunteers deliver meals both in town and at Baree on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The meals are made at Mount Morgan Hospital and the group meets at the building in East Street. The volunteers range in age, with most over 60 years age. Pictured on Front Page are Heather and Noel Barker and Jill Hall

for those Mount Morgan groups that are feeling the financial strain from this epidemic and hopefully help them manage until they can get back up and running properly again.
The $100,000 grant program will provide assistance for not-for-profit community organisations to respond to the immediate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Grants of up to $5,000 are available for eligible groups that meet the guidelines.
The program came out of a Mayoral minute last month as a way Council could directly support community groups who had lost members or were struggling to meet costs. This funding program will provide some rapid relief
COUNCIL WORKS ON BUS STOPS Council’s bus stop program has involved constructing four bus stops on James Street. The works have involved kerb works and laying concrete slabs as well as signage, with some of the projects also involving the widening of the road shoulders.
Further information including application forms and a fact sheet are available on the website at https:// www.rockhamptonregion.qld.gov.au/AboutCouncil/ News-and-announcements/COVID19-CommunityInformation/Financial-Hardship-and-AssistanceScheme.
The bus stops are located on James Street near Glen Gordon Street, Nicholson Street, East St Extended and Gordon Lane. The total program has costed more than $70,000 and have been jointly funded by Council and the Queensland State Government through the Bus Stop Construction Program.

Council helps businesses recover from pandemic shutdowns Rockhampton Regional Council has introduced another measure to help businesses get back on track as the COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease.
ensure businesses can have some extra space for their customers especially while social distancing requirements are in place.
The change, which will see businesses be able to use Council controlled footpaths for dining and retail displays without filling out forms or paying a fee for the next twelve months, was discussed at a recent Council meeting.
“This can be for any businesses, not just those in the CBD. It will apply until the end of the 2020/2021 financial year, although obviously if there are issues, we will review earlier.”
Rockhampton Region Mayor, Margaret Strelow, said Council was constantly looking for ways to help businesses during these difficult times. “We know that many local businesses are really doing it tough at the moment, and they will be trying to reorganise their product or set up their establishment to make sure they are COVID-19 safe,” Mayor Strelow said. “The change we’ve announced today means that while those who want to use Council controlled footpaths for dining and retail displays will need to make sure that they have the right insurances and leave 1.5 m for pedestrian access, we have created a red tape free environment to give them a helping hand. “In place of what can often seem an onerous application process, we are looking for businesses to use common sense and for us to work in partnership so we can make this process easier, and
Mayor Strelow said this one just one of the measures Council was implementing to support local businesses. “Council has announced a $1.3 million support package which included direct support for businesses such as extending existing business licences extended until 30 June 2021, and having Advance Rockhampton work shoulder to shoulder with local operators to link in with existing support services (this doesn’t include the money we’re spending on local contractors and suppliers to keep key projects going). “While we did this as an immediate injection back in March, we’ve been working since then on the next steps to help businesses bounce back,” she said. Businesses must ensure they comply with public liability insurance and access requirements, and all displays or seating areas must be safe and secure. Call our Customer Service team on 1300 22 55 77 with any questions.

LOCALS RETURN TO THEIR “LOCALS” For many Mount Morgan locals, the reopening of their favourite “watering hole” was a milestone to be marked with a glass of their favourite brew. Richard Carrick was Mount Morgan Railway’s first customer to drink at the bar when the hotel reopened on Wednesday, 10 June. Hotel owner, Laurie Fraser is happy to be back serving his customers, with a maximum of 28 patrons allowed on the premises - eight in the bar and 20 in the lounge and deck areas. Renovations (including the addition of a deck area at the back) on the hotel had started on the Railway Hotel prior to the pandemic closures. “The renovations were always going ahead,” Laurie said. The concerns that many business people may have had about their future was not one that Laurie had about the future of the Railway Hotel. 17 June - 1 July 2020
“I knew we would get through the closure as we didn’t owe any money,” he said. Laurie said to save costs during the shutdown, he turned the coldroom and TVs off to save on power. The bottleshop was open during the shutdown, but people could not place a bet at the TAB as it was located in the bar area. Laurie worked throughout the pandemic, manning the bottleshop. “The hardest thing for me was that it was boring. Sometimes we’d get quite a few customers through the bottleshop and at others, it was pretty quiet,” he said. With the opening of the hotel, people can now place their bets with the TAB. Keno is also back online. The hotel’s raffles will also start again. As well as this, on Friday nights, patrons are able to purchase a stone-grilled meal. Laurie is pictured above with customer, Richard Carrick.

QAS NEWS
ward areas. Please be aware that a member of the nursing team will be required to do the temperatures and that occasionally a short wait may be necessary.
As the 2019/20 Financial Year draws to a close, a glance at the statistics for QAS Mount Morgan make for some interesting reading. Despite the lockdown on large numbers of people in the face of the COVID-19 threat, the number of incidents that the QAS has attended is on track to be the largest since 2009/10.
Residential Visiting: Due to Covid-19 rules, visits to nursing home and residential facilities have had to be adjusted. Visits to residents should be limited to two hours or less and may be made by one person, or two persons together. Please note that no persons under the age of sixteen will be able to visit our residents.
As of writing, the financial year total of cases that QAS Mount Morgan has responded to is 1509. Our average financial year number of responses over the past 10 years has been 1379. Breaking the numbers down, medical issues make up the bulk of our calls with 4 out of the top 5 incident categories. Just how many of those calls can be prevented is a matter of speculation, but we always encourage a change to a healthier lifestyle of exercise, good diet, and reductions on the use of cigarettes and liquor, preferably to zero.
Visits may only be in a resident’s room. Visitors must provide proof of their influenza vaccination. A copy of this evidence will be kept on file, so that it doesn’t have to be produced at subsequent visits.
These help to prevent illnesses such as diabetes, heart problems, and respiratory disease. The remaining category in the top 5 is falls, which we know is preventable. As we come into winter, please know that many falls occur due to people tripping on long dressing gowns, wearing ill-fitting slippers, or wearing socks on lino, tile, and polished wooden floors. Please choose your winter attire carefully and ensure a good fit to prevent tripping and slipping. You may save yourself a trip (pun intended!) to the hospital. Until next time, keep safe. MMMPHs CAN Survey: Many thanks to the individuals and groups/club who took the time to respond to our recent survey. Understandably, with Covid-19 restrictions, many clubs have not been able to operate and this has been evident by the inability of some people to respond. The Covid-19 pandemic has meant quite a number of adjustments for our facility, and as such the current CAN members will continue in their roles for a short while. The survey results will be collated, information sent out to those who requested it and those interested in being a member will be contacted with more details. Please be patient, the current situation is extraordinary for all of us, but rest assured we will be following up as soon as we can.

We will be adhering to the restrictions put in place at the time for the COVID-19 virus. GALLERY UPDATE
Friday 10 am - 4 pm, or Sat/Sun 10 am - 2 pm. Please follow our Facebook page for updates,
In the last couple of weeks, we have had an interesting mix of visitors to the Gallery. Most significantly, we have seen an influx of Mount Morgan locals intent on purchasing, which is an amazing show of support, and we would like to thank you all for shopping locally, helping to keep businesses open. Another noticeable trend has been people who have recently bought homes here, or those looking, which shows promising signs for growth in our town. Expressions of interest from Artists wishing to exhibit works has also rated highly, so keep an eye out for some exciting new displays coming soon. On Mondays, the Gallery now hosts guitar, violin and piano lessons. Greg Mathers shares his vast knowledge during one on one lessons, and can be contacted on 0400 591 504 to book. Unfortunately yoga will not be returning, due to Patti branching out to pursue exciting new developments with her business. She still offers massage at her Bouldercombe studio, so why not book in for a phenomenal treatment! Remember the “Transfromation” Exhibition is commencing in just under a month so have your artworks ready for the submission date, Wednesday 8th May. Submission forms are available at No7 Gallery and on our Facebook page, or email mountmorgangallery@mail.com.

Continuing with getting to know our regional Artists. Emilie Zurvas – A young Rockhampton artist, Emilie excels at incredibly detailed sketches, that capture iconic musicians in their heyday. Shown here is her Keith Richards work, but the Gallery also has her renditions of Bob Marley and The Beatles. Carole Elliot – Renowned for her pastels and detailed representations of sea turtles, Carole is incredibly passionate in her commitment to not only be hands on with turtle rehabilitation, but also donates some of her profits to ensure their well being. We are extremely lucky to have two of her beach pastels held at No7. Alice Smith – Hailing from Yeppoon, Alice has a traditional style, capturing scenes from her travels. Her ethereal forest and river collaborations are true to life, with a shrouded in mist quality that takes much skill to replicate. Sarah D’Hondt – An eclectic character known as the Transient Crafter, Sarah makes compositions from egg shell, snake skins and feathers, resulting in fascinating nests. She also spins natural yarn and weaves, and has her art on display at the Kearn Arcade until end of July. To view or purchase any items, pop in Thursday/ Page 8

POLICE NEWS
Once again thank you to one and all for your continued compliance with Covid19 restrictions. We are seeing a gradual return to normality thanks to the hard work of every Australian. We have seen a few unlawful entry offences to houses in Mount Morgan. I can not stress enough the importance of locking your house and valuables. Please also continue to respect one another and understand the importance of being a positive role model to our younger generation. ARTS AND CRAFTS NEWS The Mount Morgan Arts and Craft Group is again meeting at Welfare House in Thompson avenue on Tuesday and Thursday. I can hear you say where is Welfare House. It is a great big building that was used for R and R when the mine was in full swing. We are located just up from the swimming pool, past the green shed, past the child care centre and behind the Welfare bowls club. The council has given it a huge face lift with painting inside and outside and relocating some animals that loved it as much as we do. The Tuesday group meet from 9.00 am until 2.00 pm where we bring our lunch and sit to enjoy. We do patchwork, making bears, crocheting, knitting and anything that we wish to try. We have our machines set up and we enjoy each other’s company while maintaining Covid19 restrictions. The Thursday group meet from 9.00am until 12.00 and they crochet and knit while maintaining Covid19 restrictions. We welcome new members who are of a like mind and we are willing to teach you a new hobby. The cost is only $5.00 per week to help with rent and electricity. Come along and see if it is for you. 17 June - 1 July 2020

Pride in Your Town
We return once more to the last two sports Houses of the MMSHS that were named after famous Australian poets. This edition we focus on Lawson and Paterson. Lawson house ceased about 1944.
Henry Lawson, born 1867-1922 was often referred to as “Australia’s greatest story writer”. He was born on the goldfields of New South Wales but sadly by the age of fourteen, he had lost most of his hearing. His learning was by reading and even though he attended University he failed. In 1896 he married Bertha Bredt but the marriage was unsuccessful with Bertha accusing him of domestic violence. They separated in 1903 but had a son, Jim and a daughter Bertha. At the age of twenty, he had verse printed and the article said ‘A poetic genius.” Lawson had trekked from Hungerford to Bourke and he did not agree with Paterson of the brave horsemen, the beautiful scenery depicted in verse by Paterson. Lawson’s writing depicted a different picture than Paterson. Lawson in his poem “The Drovers Wife” tells of heart break, bleakness and loneliness.
Who now shall wear the cheerful face In times when things are blackest
And who shall whistle round the place When fortune frowns her blackest. Andrew Barton Paterson. Paterson, born 1864 and died 1941 is fondly remembered as “Banjo” for his famous poem but he had many occupations including author, journalist, composer, clerk, solicitor and poet. He was born on a property called Narrambla (near Orange) and remained there for his first five young years then his family moved to Yass, where familiar sights for him were Cobb and Coaches, drovers, horsemen, picnic races, polo matches which all led to his fondness of horses; inspiring a great deal of his writing. In 1874 he attended the Sydney Boys Grammar School, but then failed the entrance exam to University.
Later In 1903 in Sydney, he developed a twenty year friendship with Mrs. Isobel Byers. Despite his position as the most celebrated Australian writer of his time, Lawson was poor and behind in his wife and child payments. He became a drunkard and was sent to goal but Mrs. Byes negotiated on his behalf, supported him, and financed a publishing deal for him.
In Sydney he worked for a law firm then in 1886 became a solicitor and in these years submitted poems to “The Bulletin” Journal. He became engaged in a friendly rivalry with Lawson about the lure of the bush. His war career then started from South Australia in 1899 as a war correspondent in the Boer War, impressing the British Press.
It was in Mrs. Byes home that he had a cerebral hemorrhage in 1922, aged 55 and died. Lawson was granted a state funeral and since his death he has received many honours. A bronze statue of Lawson, with a swagman, dog and a post stands in the Domain, Sydney. His portrait has been on postage stamps and the ten dollar bill. This is a little of one of his verses.
In 1908 after a trip to England he moved his family to a property near Yass. Later in World War 1 he became an ambulance man in Flanders, France, and then returned to Australia in 1915 as an honorary vet. He travelled on three voyages with horses to Africa, China and Egypt.

He left us in dejection now Our thoughts with him are roving It’s dull on this selection now Since Andy went a-droving Page 14
In late 1915 he was commissioned to serve in France where he was wounded, and reported missing in July 1916 and latterly as commanding officer of the unit based in Cairo. He was returned to Australia in 1919 in the rank of Major. While visiting a friend in Queensland in 1895 he met Christine Macpherson who composed the music for which he then wrote the lyrics of the famous “Waltzing Matilda”. In addition he wrote many lyrics for songs with piano scores and also in that year a collection of his Bush Ballads was published. A lot of his work presented a considerable less romantic view of the harshness of rural existence of the late 19th century. It was in 1903 he married Alice Walker and they had two children, a daughter, Grace and a son, Hugh. Paterson’s work is well Continued on Page 15

Paterson died of a heart attack in 1941 and along with his wife (1963) is in the Northern Suburbs Crematorium, Sydney. He has a huge legacy but none so fitting as Slim Dusty’s rendition of “Waltzing Matilda” being the first song broadcast from outer space to earth. Here is a little of one of his poems.
The Man from Ironbark It was the man from Ironbark who struck the Sydney town He wandered over street and park, he wandered up and down. He loitered here, he loitered there, till he was like to drop, Until at last in sheer despair he sought a barber’s shop. “Ere” shave my beard and whiskers off, I’ll be a man of mark, I’ll go and do the Sydney toff up home in Ironbark. The barber man was small and flash, as barbers mostly are, He wore a strike-your-fancy sash, he smoked a huge cigar: He was a humorist of note and keen to repartee, He laid the odds and kept a “tote”, whatever that may be. And when he saw our friend arrive, he whispered “Here’s a lark! Just watch me catch him all alive, this man from Ironbark. As ever, think clean and be tidy.
