Abvoe: Best and Fairest and Highest Points winner Tyler Toby with Lorikeets’ Captain/Coach Kyle Dodd and Club President Wayne Alden.
The Mount Morgan Rugby Union Lorikeets honoured their players in a “black and white” themed function at the Grand Hotel on Saturday, 8 October, 2022.
In reflecting on the past 12 months, President Wayne Alden said he was happy to be able to field a team for the 2022 season.
“After not been able to field a team in 2021, it was important to do so this year,” he said.
“Through a lot of hard work from everyone and with a lot of young guys participating we were able to field a team every week and we kept on improving – this went beyond my expectations for the season.”
“It’s been good to see the culture come back – with the team members turning up for both training and the game,” Wayne said.
Wayne and the team’s captain/coach Kyle Dodd presented the team members with a travel bag from Ochre Australia and drink vouchers from the Grand Hotel – the team’s two major sponsors.
“We would also like to thank these sponsors and our other sponsors – Mane Street Hair Studio, Mount Morgan Outdoors and the Golden Mount Store who supplied raffle prizes throughout the year.”
A special mention presentation was made to Duncan Scott who has been a long-standing member of the club playing over 700 games.
The awards were presented as follows: Tyler Toby (Best and Fairest and Highest Points Scorer), Connor Stewart (Les “Whippy” Bendall Memorial Shield –Best Back), John Anderson-Ross (Most Improved Back), Montel Oram (Best Forward), Allan Tull (Most Improved Forward), Brayden Wilkes-Hayden (Rene McDougall Memorial Shield for Rookie of the Year), Ian Leggo (Cecil Pearce Memorial Shield for Players’ Player of the Year) and Kyle Dodd (Paul Bone Memorial Shield for Best Club Person).
MOUNT TEACHER FINALIST FOR TEACHX AWARD
Mount Morgan State High School teacher, Justene Webb is a finalist in the Queensland College of Teachers 2022 TEACHX awards.
Justene was one of 30 finalists from a pool of 230 nominations across six categories. The initial shortlisting reduced the number of applications to 71 and then a further shortlisting reduced this number to 30.
She was nominated for the Leadership category by her Head of Department – Ms Kim Snell – for her extensive work with the Vocational Education and Training programs within the school, ensuring that school leavers are leaving with work qualifications.
Justene has spent the past 20 or so years in the education field – starting as a teacher aid, moving on to Day Care and eventually teaching at the Mount Morgan State High School, where she has been for the past eight years.
Justene teaches Senior Essential English, Grade 10 retail and volunteering certificates, Skills for Work Certificate, Certificate II in Work Skills and Certificate III in Early Childhood.
Justene said she was still in shock from reaching the Continueed on Page 4

finals – especially after the second shortlisting.
“Ms Snell kept threatening to nominate me and when she did, I thought that was good, but I never expected to make the finals,” she said.
Justene enjoys her job and believes that education is no longer a “one size fits” and her finalist position is also recognition of Mount Morgan State High School.
Although not originally from Mount Morgan, Justene met her partner, Dale Passmore, a long-time resident of Mount Morgan. The couple have two daughters –Lilly and Brooke. When she’s not busy teaching or preparing lessons, Justene spends her time training young horses and travelling around the horse sports circuits with her daughters and Dale. The TEACHX Awards will be held, and winners announced in Brisbane on 27 October – on the eve of World Teachers’ Day.
MOUNT MORGAN RAIL TRAILS
The concept of a Rail Trails from Cedric Archer Park in Gracemere along the rail corridor to the Mount Morgan Railway Complex has been on the Council table for over a year. Preliminary designs and a feasibility study have been completed, however it may be some time before Council can move forward with development of the trail.
“The study, which was funded through a $250,000 State Government grant and undertaken by Burchills Engineering Solutions, found that the project would be feasible to deliver and that there is community support,” Rockhampton Regional Councillor, Cherie Rutherford said.
“This is a fantastic outcome, and our future stage will be to investigate options for more funding so that we can undertake detailed design.
“As part of the project a preliminary design was created for the route, which begins at Mount Morgan Railway Station and finishes at Cedric Archer Park.
“We worked closely with the community through two rounds of engagement to understand the best route, any concerns, and what people would like to see.
“I really want to thank everyone in the community who provided their feedback.
“Overall people were really supportive of the project, which would see almost 30km of trail for cyclists, walkers and potentially horse riders.
“I do want to acknowledge that there were some concerns raised by people with property adjacent to the rail trail. Already this feedback has helped inform the design process, and if we do move to detailed design we will be looking to work very closely with the community.
“We are still in the early stages of this project and we’re not looking to break ground in the short term.
“Council at the moment is really focusing on those major infrastructure projects that are critical to our community, such as the Mount Morgan Water Pipeline as well as other water and sewerage infrastructure projects.
“In total this project would cost about $13.1 million to construct, so we would be looking for support from other levels of government in order to move ahead,” Cr Rutherford said.
Central Queensland Rail Trails Australia representative and Gladstone Regional Councillor, Desley O’Grady at a meeting with Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc representatives recently said Rail Trails needed to be a community lead project.
“It’s important to take the community on the whole adventure, talk to your key stakeholders such the landholders, the three tiers of government and the local business people,” Cr O’Grady said.
“Rail Trail usage is a growing activity for the adventurous, most people of any age can traverse a rail trail, there seems to be a lot of retirees using the rail trails during the weeks and families on the weekends. People are attracted to the natural beauty of such areas as ranges to rivers and everything in between.”
“People are looking for an adventure that doesn’t cost anything and this is what a rail trail consists of. The age-old euphemism of “Build it and they will come”, really holds water,” she said.
Rail Trails are very popular and they are a great way to get people out enjoying their health and wellbeing along the disused rail corridor where people have never ventured before, due to the trains that use to use the line, the infrastructure that was been left has a lot of history surrounding the construction. Rail Trails are an easier option to ride or walk on as trains could only travel up small inclines. The scenery on a lot of the disused corridors is breathtaking. Small towns along the corridor benefit from the trail users stopping to buy food, drink and to admiring to country towns.
“I have been involved prior to the inception of the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail (BBIRT) which the first meeting was in December 2017.
“Since the very first meeting of the BBIRT the community group has been very proactive in getting sections of the trail up and running. The first section that was opened what the Dawes Range Section between Barrimoon and Builyan which is 26 Kilometres in length.
Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc will hold a meeting in near future to further discuss and move forward with the Mount Morgan Rail Trail.

The Rotary Club of Mount Morgan is looking forward to viewing a special release of the movie “The Lost King” at 6.30pm on Thursday, 1 December at the Birch, Carroll, and Coyle theatre in Rockhampton. The special screening of this movie is a fundraiser for Rotary’s commitment to rid the World of Polio. This has been Rotary International’s flagship project since 1985. The wild Polio Virus is very close to being wiped out completely, but it requires a lot more work, particularly in immunising all the children of the World, to get the job finished, said Mount Morgan Rotary Club President Craig Edmonston.
The Lost King is a life-affirming true story of an amateur historian, Philippa Langley, who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history. King Richard lll had been killed in battle in August 1485. Philippa Langley’s commitment and persistence eventually led to the discovery of the burial place and remains of the former King in 2012, when dug up in a car park in Leicester.
Mr Edmonston said tickets to the movie would be on sale from 12 October and would cost $20. More details of the event will be advised as soon as they come to hand.
SWEET TREATS FOR ROTARY FUNDRAISING
The Rotary Club of Mount Morgan’s youngest member and secretary has been busy making “sweet treats” to sell at Markets which the club attends. Jacinta Oliver works part time and is studying nursing at the CQ University, but gladly took on the task of making requested toffee apples, toffee and peanut brittle - in her spare time. The Rotary Stall at the Wattle Day Festival was the first time that the toffees were on sale - two weeks later and a little advertising on Facebook and Jacinta made over 15 toffee apples and other tasty toffee offerings for sale at Baree.

In September, I spoke in Parliament about the passing of Queen Elizabeth II who lived an extraordinary life. Many Flynn residents have contacted both my Gladstone and Emerald offices with requests of portraits of the late Queen and have signed the condolence books to pay their respects. On behalf of the Flynn electorate, we offer our respectful condolences to the Royal Family.
I was pleased to recently support the Mount Morgan Branch – Australian Pensioners and Superannuants Leagues Queensland with a morning tea hamper for their upcoming ‘Seniors Week Morning Tea’. Well done to Patricia Hare and the committee. Patricia is pictured above with her hamper.
After its closure 30 years ago, I am delighted construction on the redevelopment of the historic Mount Morgan Mine is edging closer with works on track to begin by Christmas. The project is expected to support 250 jobs in construction, and 150 direct operating jobs and more than 2400 indirect jobs.
As always, I will continue to lobby on behalf of the Mount Morgan community at every opportunity.
I look forward to catching up with you all soon.

Alma Lundager’s Letters
letters to members of the Court through Dame Durden’s Post Office. Topics included animals, hobbies and places of interest. A few lucky Cornerites had their letters published each week.
A keen Cornerite, Alma often corresponded with Dame Durden. Her first letter was published in 1910 when she resided in Dee Street, Mount Morgan, with her parents and sisters:
‘Dee Street, Mount Morgan (Q).
Dear Dame Durden. – I have never written to you before, but I have been reading the stories and letters in the “Children’s Corner”.
Above: c. 1906 / Mount Morgan / Mount Morgan-born sisters, Alma May Lundager (1898-1953) (left) and Mary Kristine Lundager (1893-1968) / Youngest daughters of well-known Mount Morgan photographer from Denmark, Jens Hansen Lundager (1853-1930).
Photograph by Chas Hill Studio.
From the State Library of Queensland. Alma Lundager (1898-1953) (pictured standing) has always been the most difficult Lundager sister for me to research. I was, therefore, delighted to discover her letters to ‘Children’s Corner’, a section in the weekly broadsheet newspaper, Australian Town and Country Journal (Sydney, NSW : 1870-1919).
The Corner was inhabited by fictional characters of the ‘Court of Entertainers’, such as King HighandMighty, Queen Youngheart and the Court Jester. They entertained their young readers through stories, poems, illustrations and jokes.
‘Cornerites’ (children who followed the Corner) were invited to send
You will see by my letter that I am living in Mount Morgan, a great mining town. Dad and I went for a walk up the mountain. I got some nice specimens. One of them has all the colors of the rainbow. It is called peacock stone [a copper ore called bornite]. In the earlier days of Mount Morgan gold and copper were found, but now there is very little gold. At night there is a very pretty sight that lights up the whole sky. It is the waste material after the copper is taken out of it. Visitors think it wonderful, but of course we people are quite used to it. My second eldest sister is a music teacher. I have three sisters and no brothers. I like Rockhampton very much, especially the Botanical Gardens. I have a friend there; she is a very nice girl. We are having a lot of rain up here now. With love to yourself and the other cornerites, – I remain your loving friend, Alma Lundager (aged 11 years).
(Dame Durden. – Write again, Alma, and a longer letter next time. There is ever such a lot more you could have told us. Some of us have never been to Mount Morgan, and don’t exactly expect to go there, at any rate, just at present. About those specimens –

and the three sisters – and the little friend)’ (‘Dame Durden’s Post Office’, Australian Town and Country Journal (Sydney, NSW : 1870-1919), 11 May 1910).
The Corner regularly conducted competitions. Prizes included story books, silver pens, hatpins, certificates, waist buckles and stamps. In 1911, Alma entered a best letter competition and obtained second-class honours, along with ten other Cornerites (there being three grades: first-, second- and third-class honours).
Alma then sent the Dame a thank-you letter, in which she revealed more information about Mount Morgan, her interests and concerns. Impressed by the letter, Dame Durden published it: ‘Dee Street, Mount Morgan.
Dear Dame Durden, – Thanks very much for the second-class honor. I am going to Yeppoon, a seaside resort, for a fortnight. It is raining very hard now while I am writing, and the lightning and thunder are awful. Mount Morgan is making great headway. We have a new post office made of brick, and a new School of Arts, which is to be two-storeyed, and the Technical College is being extended. The Dawson Valley railway is passing by our place, and when they blast up the rocks the ground shakes terribly, just like the thunder rumbles today. Our garden was looking dry, but it is fresher now. The big chimney was beginning to crack, but there are iron bands round it to prevent it from falling. It was dreadful about those poor coal miners entombed in the mine at Bolton, in England*. At the breaking up of our school I got a prize and certificate. The name of my prize is “Tanglewood Tales”. I have read it already. We have a library at our school: we pay one penny a quarter: we are allowed to take two books home for the Christmas holidays. I was so sorry to hear of the death of Minnie Love [a fellow Cornerite from Kiama, New South Wales]+. My sister is just recovering from pneumonia. We had an anxious time with her. She is going to Yeppoon, too. – I remain your loving friend, Alma Lundager (aged 12 years)’ (‘Dame Durden’s Competition’, Australian Town and Country Journal (Sydney, NSW : 1870-1919), 15 March 1911).
* Alma refers to the Pretoria Pit disaster of 21 December 1910 in northwest England, in which 344 men and boys died.
+ The Dame made the sad announcement to the Cornerites on 16 November 1910 that Minnie Love, whose letters were often published, had died of pneumonia (aged 14).
Alma’s letters – both written on rainy days in Mount Morgan – show an articulate little girl who cared about her family and town, the Cornerites community and events in the wider world. How exciting it must have been for her to have family holidays by the sea at Yeppoon and find colourful, sparkling peacock stones on the mountain.

BARONS
I’m sure you’ve heard it before“If you remember the sixties, you weren’t really there!” The turbulent, wonderful, world-changing sixties opened the door for the new age beyond in the seventies and eighties, and if you remember the seventies, well... You’ve got a few miles under your belt, you’ve seen a lot and hopefully you’ve learned a great deal along the way. It seems to be a bit of a theme lately, nostalgia for the seventies. Just a couple of editions of the Argus ago it was Los Angeles, California, 1973 in LICORICE PIZZA; and now we begin BARONS in 1971, the northern beaches of Sydney and the golden sands of Queensland.
Inspired by the feud at the time between rising Aussie cultural and surf-wear giants Billabong, Rip Curl, and Quicksilver, BARONS has us join with a group of best friends chasing their sun-soaked surfing dreams, unprepared for the truth that even paradise can be clouded by rivalry, greed and ambition.
The world was opening up, particularly to Australia. It was a time of sexual liberation and great
social change. New freedoms were there for the taking, especially in the surfie culture, but most Aussies were still relatively sheltered and naive to the ways and dangers of the outside world. However, while they may not have been acutely aware of the outside world, they were also unaware of the limits... They did not know what was impossible, so they just set out to do it anyway. Aussies from all field’s - media, music, film, business, art, science etc, set out to conquer the world, and with great success. So too do our two bronzed surfie protagonists in this unique moment of upheaval and immense opportunity, as a new surfing counter-culture and the ambitious spirit of enterprise collide. It’s going to be a hell of a ride...
Join with this wild team on a crazy ride through the stimulating, seductive seventies in the most beautiful place on Earth. With the Vietnam War hovering above them all like The Sword of Damocles, thirst for life, adventure and freedom was even more heightened.

At our Morning Tea on Wednesday, 26 October 2022 starting at 10 am in St Mary’s Hall, Mount Morgan, we ask that if you have something very special, that you can share about the history of Mount Morgan to bring it along.
It may be a newspaper article, recipe, photo, or a story. Just putting it out there to see what we can come up with, from those that are interested. Looking forward to catching up with you at our meetings and morning teas. Check out the back page of the Argus for times and details. Stay healthy and safe.

The whole process of writing the story was the easiest part as organising to publish the book on KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) through Amazon and the extensive amount of research needed to learn this process has taken months and lots of trial and error.

About the Illustrator
Mount Morgan is no stranger to talent – whether this be in the sporting arena, creating amazing art works or as Kaye Rowley has done, creating works of fiction and adult colouring books.
Kaye grew up in Mount Morgan before completing a teaching degree and heading off in the big wide world. She is affectionately known as ‘Del Rowley’s daughter’ or in previous years as ‘Matron’s Daughter’ to many of the locals. Kaye has enjoyed multiple careers; working as a primary/special school teacher, police officer and disability carer and currently working as the administration officer for Heritage Minerals at the Mount Morgan Mine.
Whilst Kaye was working with a loved, former local, Adrian Bath as his dedicated disability carer for nearly a year, it was often very hard to find colouring books for him that were designed for an adult and also large enough for him to colour and enjoy.
Many colouring books were either so intricate or babyish that were inappropriate for an adult male that it inspired Kaye to create a
After making several rookie mistakes, putting the book back several months, it should be ready by the end of October. It is about Benny the dog investigating (snooping around) a police station, meeting some police officers and looking into a police car to make sure it really is a police station.
The beautiful illustrations have been done by Nabila Rao (pictured right) who lives in Pakistan. Kaye requested a few illustrators to draw Benny and Nabila hands down had Benny drawn perfectly.
Whilst she was waiting for this book to be completed doing hundreds of hours of research, Kaye also started to complete many other books based around her love of nature including journals, budget and goal workbooks, composition notebooks, a coffee table book for children and this featured colouring book (‘Coloring on Title as it is mostly to be sold in USA on Amazon), 30 Worldwide Flowers & 30 Worldwide Animals.
Kaye commissioned Nabila to be the artist of the illustrations and cover to Kaye’s specifications so illustrations, words inside and cover were adult focused.
Kaye has already written three other books in the Benny Snoops series
Nabila is 21 years old from Mailsi in Pakistan. Nabila who has recently graduated with a Bachelor of Information Technology, has three years of graphic design experience.
Nabila loves to illustrate children's books and design books in different art styles. She has been working on the platform called Fiverr for three years and will soon start her own business.
If anyone wants any illustrations done for their children’s books and need a designer, they can contact her by emailnabilarao13271@gmail.com.

Get online week/Seniors Month
Much of modern life takes place online. As more and more services move from face-to-face to digital, it is important to know how to navigate online environments and where to go for assistance. Get Online Week runs from 1723 October and is a week-long annual campaign supporting people to improve their digital skills and close the digital divide. According to national research, 1 in 4 Australians do not have affordable access to the internet or the skills to use it safely.
One of the roles of public libraries is to help bridge that digital divide. For travellers and those without a computer at home, the Mount Morgan Library has 4 computers available to use. Simply sign on with your library card number and password for two hours free access per day. Forgotten your library password? Just ask at the library counter and staff can look it up for you. Printing is available from these computers for a small fee. Free wi-fi is also available at all Rockhampton Regional Libraries. A range of desks, tables and couches are available, so bring a laptop or tablet, find a comfy spot and settle in.
If you or someone you know needs help brushing up their computer skills, there are many resources available. Sign up for Be Connected at https://beconnected. esafety.gov.au/ to learn about getting started online, internet banking and myGov. Visit the Rockhampton Regional Libraries website for more online resources including Linkedin Learning, which has a range of self-paced computer courses from beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, as well as for professional certificate level (ie Microsoft, Meta or IBM Center for Cloud Training), continuing education or academic credits you can access 24/7 from your own device.

NEW DETECTIVES ON MOUNTAIN BEAT
The newest detectives on the Mount Morgan Beat are Koch and Boules - two rather bumbling cops who solve crime through sheer good luck and very little management.
The crime duo, the latest offering from Blue Eagle Productions started filming in Mount Morgan on the weekend of 1-2 October.
Local born actor, Clint Lennox and Rockhampton comic actor, Jodie Van de Wetering were seen about town “snooping” out leads to help them solve their latest criminal cases.
Koch and Boules is a 10-part web series which was funded through the Regional Arts Development Program (RADF). Filming is expected to be completed in November.

CENTRAL STATE SCHOOL P&C UPDATE
Ninja Course
P&C have been busy following through with grants we have received. The latest being the installation of the Ninja Adventure Course for our Senior students on the top oval. Funding was gratefully provided by The Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal with input from Mount Morgan Central and P & C and fill generously donated and delivered by Rockhampton Regional Council. This course will certainly be a challenge and students are super excited for it to be completed. An official opening event will be held in coming weeks.
