AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATED IN STYLE Chantelle Berry and Mystique Lemire dressed up to show they were proud to be Aussies.

Australia Day...From Page 1 Covid and its various strains are impacting on events across Queensland, but it didn’t deter the Rotary Club of Mount Morgan who soldiered on and ensured that Mount Morgan celebrated Australia Day at the No. 7 Dam. With funding from Council, the hardworking Rotarians were able to provide a range of “ridgey-didge” Aussie fare such as lamingtons, vegemite sandwiches, sausage sizzle, watermelon, icy poles and cold drinks as well as being able to provide amusement rides for young and fairy floss for both young and young at heart. There was also face painting for young and old. Entertainment was again organised by Di Coburn, who also performed. The Welcome to Country was performed by Donna Anderson.

Bush poetry was read by perennial favourite Alma Graham (Pictured far right middle) and former Mount Morgan Citizen of the Year, Freda McDougall again showed her enormous musical talents. Jodi Nichols (pictured right) and Cameron Evers completed the entertainment line-up. This free community event, was officially opened by Mayor Tony Williams who attended the event along with Crs Smith, Latcham, Mathers, Kirkland and Wickerson. The Mayor raised the Australian Flag during the playing of the National Anthem. Rotary Club of Mount Morgan President, Rosemary Izzard said the club members worked hard to ensure that the day was celebrated. She said the drop in numbers was expected considering the the climate, but she was happy with those who did make the effort to attend.

CHANGES AFOOT AT MOUNT MORGAN POST OFFICE Ian Traynor (affectionately known as PMG) is off to enjoy a well deserved retirement. PMG has worked tirelessly to serve the Mount Morgan community over the past 18 years and and will miss his patrons friendly faces, great banter and kind well wishes. Ian and his wife Keri arrived 18 years ago and never once considered leaving. They made their home here and have thoroughly enjoyed living in Mount Morgan. Attempting to fill these big and wise shoes are his son and daughter-in-law, Jarrad and Maria, who, along with their trusty Otto, the Post Office Rotto, are excited to be continuing the family legacy of Traynor Licensees at the Mount Morgan Post Office. Maria has been the trainee in the Post office that many of you have met in the last few weeks, and she is excited to get to know you all more. Jarrad loves a good fish and tinkering with different things. You may have noticed a new fence and a few changes in the Post Office itself. Maria loves a chat. So please come in and say hi. You’ll usually find them both with Otto at the beach, or beavering away at the post office. Maria and Jarrad are excited about serving their community and ensuring that you all continue to receive the stellar service Ian, and others have provided you over the years, Page 4

Don’t worry! Rae isn’t going anywhere, as she says “you would need to crane her out to make her leave” Judy has also retired from the front counter, so you won’t see the twins Jill and Judy as much anymore, but Maria and Jarrad are very thankful that they all will be on hand to help them learn the ropes. With all the above in mind, as Maria is trying to furiously learn nearly 2000 peoples’ names, please bring your ID in when picking up parcels and mail until she can remember everyone. Help us help you! Do you have any suggestions about what you would like to see, or be able to do at the post office? If so, drop in and have a chat with Maria, Ian will be off visiting friends and family in the foreseeable future with his travels taking him from Queensland to Victoria. Ian, a Vietnam veteran, is sad to leave the Post Office, but feels that at 73 the time has come for him to travel. Ian, when he finishes travelling will return to Mount Morgan. He said he was happy to be able to hand the reins over to his son and daughter-in-law. Follow us on Facebook or email us on Maria@JTSServices.com.au

RAILWAY worker TAKES TRIP DOWN MEMORY lANE Robert Cecil Crozier (Bob) began his Railway career as a Lad Porter at the Mount Morgan Railway Station on 9 June 1954 and he returned to remember the ‘good old days’ with a visit to the Railway Museum on 11 January.

Bob spent five years in Mount Morgan, then worked as a Porter in Rockhampton and took up a position in Emerald as a Shunter in 1962.

Over the years Bob continued

to work within Queensland Rail in positions including Guard, Drivers Assistant, Locomotive Driver at Bluff, Sarina and back to Rockhampton where he continues to live. Bob entertained the volunteers with stories of how he had to ‘sweep even a matchstick off the railway tracks’ while working in Mount Morgan. “I remember, one day. The Station Master at the time dressed down one of the Shunters over not doing his job properly, but within minutes when going to smoko, he forgot the issue and offered to have a threepenny handed game of poker with the men,” Bob said. Bob spoke of many people he remembered in Mount Morgan, and some local residents may also remember Bob and his family and their time in Mount Morgan. Close neighbours Nic and Sarah drove Bob up for his trip down memory lane.

PIPELINE PLEDGE FROM CANDIDATE

roses that they’ve planted for loved ones that have passed,” Ms Swain said.

Labor’s candidate for Flynn Matt Burnett took Shadow Minister for the Environment and Water Terri Butler and Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams to Dam No.7 in Mount Morgan to call on the Federal Government to be at the table on the town’s urban water supply.

“I run a garden club at school and it’s pretty difficult when you’ve got twenty 5 year-olds wanting to plant seeds and you have to tell them that we can’t plant seeds because we can’t water them,” she said.

Labor’s Candidate for Flynn Matt Burnett said that it was a priority of his to meet with Mount Morgan locals and on the ground, to see the problem for himself. “The Rockhampton Regional Council released their priorities for the Federal Government in Flynn, but we haven’t heard a single word from Scott Morrison on them,” Mr Burnett said. “The LNP have been in Government for over 8 years now, they have an invite to be at the table, but can’t be bothered to make the trip up the mountain to meet with locals.” “The sad reality for the people of Mount Morgan is that the Federal Government is yet again missing in action, unwilling to take responsibility.” “I’m proud of my track record of delivering local services and infrastructure in Gladstone, the people of Mount Morgan need a strong voice in Canberra that will actually listen to and fight for them,” he said. Shadow Minister for the Environment and Water Terri Butler said that she was more than happy to answer the call from Matt Burnett to come to Mount Morgan to see the local issue for herself.

Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc has recently submitted a letter to the candidates detailing the top seven priorities that have been derived from the community over the past few years. These priorites were forwarded to all Mirani Electorate candidates before the State Election and all Mayoral Candidates in the Rockhampton Regional Counci byelection. No response had been received from the Federal Candidates at the time of printing. The priorities are: 1. A permanent water supply, 2. The reopening/repurposing of the Mine, 3. Opening the mine and Fireclay Caverns [paleontological importance] so Queenslanders can engage with their cultural heritage, 4. Reinstatement of the Mount Morgan Railway as a tourist railway through provision of rail infrastructure; 5. Beautification of the Dee River from the mine contamination to the No. 7 Dam wall, 6. Upgraded and additional sports and recreational facilities and established and fund more youth activities and programs within the community; and 7. The development of a mining museum or dinosaur museum.

“We need a Federal Government that really gets behind our regions, and doesn’t just shovel money into the big cities like Sydney and Melbourne,” Shadow Minister Butler said. “Scott Morrison’s Water Minister talks a big game down in Canberra, but when it comes to showing up on the ground in towns like Mount Morgan, he’s nowhere to be seen.”

It’s Time For A Pipeline!

Mayor of Rockhampton Regional Council Tony Williams said that to date, the Council had spent $3.3 millions dollars transporting water from Rockhampton to Mount Morgan, providing a safe drinking supply for the Mount Morgan community. “This can’t go on and we need to look at a long term solution for Mount Morgan, and part of that is advocating to the Federal Government in this upcoming election on how we can get a sustainable water supply,” Mayor Williams said. “So we’re advocating to Matt and the other candidates asking him to commit to a business case of $3.5 million to look at options about what a long-term solution could be for the very important community of Mount Morgan,” he said. “It’s Time For a Pipeline Advocate” and Groundskeeper at Mount Morgan Central State School Kirra Swain said all local residents had been impacted hugely by the lack of water security. “We have 80 year olds bucketing water to feed heirloom 2 - 16 February 2022

One of Mount Morgan’s earliest music stores was Mellor’s Music Warehouse in Morgan Street (pictured). The music store was first mentioned in a newspaper in 1906 (as far as I can see), suggesting the store opened around that time. The young ‘music warehouseman’*, Rupert Mellor (1881-1920), sold phonographs, records, sheet music, new and second-hand pianos, pianolas Page 12

Mr Mellor closed his doors in 1915 due to financial difficulties, probably arising from the First World War. *A common term used then to describe an owner and/or manager of a music store. 1913 / Morgan Street, Mount Morgan / Shop front of Mellor’s Music Warehouse / Music warehouseman, Brisbane-born Rupert Edward Mellor (or Meller) (1881-1920), son of a merchant / Music store awning reads: ‘Pianos Organs’ / Two men in suits standing outside the adjacent shop (left) / Posters advertising the plays, ‘A Royal Divorce’ and ‘The Lady of Lyons’, in the adjacent shop windows (left) / J. Movie Review home door - Will must be ready.

NINE DAYS

“Different is like a breath of fresh air! Welcome to the most original, quizzical, inspiring, thoughtprovoking, heartfelt and definitely different film of 2020/2021. An emotional roller-coaster, NINE DAYS is the apex work of Edson Oda’s life to date. Still a young man, Edson’s former career won him many accolades and awards making short films and music videos. But something happened in Edson’s personal sphere when he was just twelve years old that inspired him to start writing what would eventually become his feature film debut, this movie, NINE DAYS, which he also directed. To my mind, it is a masterpiece and you must... Inside a modest isolated house with a white picket fence, surrounded by vast, seemingly endless and empty desert, Will (Winston Duke is brilliant) conscientiously spends his days

in front of a large bank of old TV’s stacked high, one upon the other. He is diligently taking notes and making observations as he watches, from their personal Points of View (POV), the everyday lives of different people unfolding on the screens before him. 1hese are the ones Will is responsible for, his “charges” if you will. He cannot intervene or influence, but he did select them in the first place so he is personally invested and keen to study how well they do; hopefully to learn how to improve, if possible, his selection procedures in the future. But then, one of his subjects suddenly perishes in such a way that it leaves Will confused, in anguish, questioning, bereft, grieving... Why? However, this has left a vacancy for a new life on earth and the new candidates, unborn souls, will soon be knocking on his remote, desert

DEE RIVER OLDIES In early January with the heat and COVID about, it was decided to cancel the Meetings and Morning Teas for January and February. Rockhampton 60 & Better group have since made the decision to put all of their activities on hold until the end of February. With COVID still about and now everyone waiting for their boosters it was not worth the risk. Membership forms will be done when we are back. Our next write-up in the Argus will be on the Wednesday, 2 March, 2022. Hoping we can let you know where we are going for the year ahead. Stay happy and healthy. ROTARY CLUB OF MOUNT MORGAN

DINNER MEETING - THURSDAY - GRAND HOTEL 6.00 for 6.30. Interested people are encouraged to attend or send an Expression of Interest to PO Box 2, Mount Morgan Page 14

Simply by being born you have won the lottery of life, and to be born Australian - immeasurably more so. Edson Oda gives the heart and brain a little simultaneous squeeze with his insightful, sometimes funny, sometimes tragic, always engrossing meditative vision of human souls in limbo, aching to be born against unimaginable odds, hindered by forces beyond their control. Alongside the outstanding Winston Duke are his co-stars, all of them excellent; Benedict Wong, Zazie Beetz, Tony Hale and Alexander Skarsgard’s little brother Bill in one of his best roles so far. NINE DAYS is rated M for “mature themes, violence and coarse language” and it runs for two truly fascinating hours. ‘NINE DAYS invites you to reconsider your entire worldview.”...Loved it!

No one should ever force you to make the decision • especially when you feel that your beloved companion • is not yet ready to leave. You need to be strong for your best friend in their last few days and to consider what is best for them – to be brave and remind yourself that what we do now has to be in their best interests, not ours. Sometimes, it is not clear whether their quality of life is acceptable to them, and unfortunately, your pet may not always let you know it is time. Many pets will often try to show you they are fine when in fact, they are suffering.
