HATS OFF TO THESE EASTER BONNETS
The air was filled with excitement at the Mount Morgan Central State School with children eagerly awaiting the Term’s end holidays and the anticipated arrival of the Easter Bunny. Added to the excitement was the crafting of some rather clever Easter bonnets and the annual Easter Egg Hunt.
Unfortunately, Mother Nature rained on this hunt and students were shuffled into the library to undertake a colouring-in competition to earn their Easter Eggs. Above: Ryder, Chaycze and Greyson were eager to pose with their class winning hats, but not so eager to hand back the chocolate bunnies that were used for props!
Congratulations to all winners for such inspired hats that helped to bring in Easter
WATER RESTRICTION RELIEF AT LAST!
Mount Morgan residents can now water gardens, wash cars and do those tasks they haven’t been allowed to do for the past three years due to Level six water restrictions
Level six water restrictions were lifted on Tuesday, 2 April 2024 following the Mount Morgan No 7 Dam reaching full capacity.
Level six water restrictions were put in place in March 2021 when dam levels fell below 10 per cent.
Rainfall in the catchment in early 2024 has seen the No 7 Dam reach full capacity with Rockhampton Regional Council now able to reconnect the town’s water supply from the dam and the Mount Morgan Water Treatment Plant.
This process will begin initially with a blend between dam water and carted water from Rockhampton’s water supply.
Council will then reduce the level of carted water in stages over a two to three-week period to help residents adjust to the expected change in taste and ensure capacity and operations at the water treatment plant function as expected.
Council has conducted trial and testing of the water treatment plant over the past three months to prepare for the switchover and ensure that the town’s drinking water meets stringent guidelines.
At current levels, Council is confident that there is sufficient water storage available to meet demand until construction of the Mount Morgan Water Supply Pipeline is completed.
The pipeline is an important long-term water security measure which provides a sustainable solution for the town.
The pipeline will ensure Mount Morgan has the water infrastructure it needs to grow and thrive and remove the likelihood of future water restrictions and carting as a result of localised drought and low rainfall. Council will continue to monitor water storage levels and usage and provide regular updates to the community as the pipeline progresses.
Mayor of Rockhampton Regional Council, Tony Williams, said this was a great day for Mount Morgan and the region more broadly.
“We have all been conscious of the challenges the Mount Morgan community has experienced over the past three years,” Mayor Williams said.
“To be able to remove restrictions and utilise the dam
water while we build the Mount Morgan pipeline is a positive thing.
“The need to introduce restrictions and the development of the pipeline was one of the first matters I dealt with as Mayor.
“It’s something that I have lived the highs and the lows over during the past three years and something which I personally am proud to see being resolved.
“I want to thank local residents and business for their patience and understanding over this period. I know it’s not been easy, but the end is in sight and I am really pleased that we can take this step today.”
Divisional Councillor, Cr Cherie Rutherford, thanked the community for their perseverance and resilience during the last three years.
“We absolutely recognise the impact the prolonged drought has had on residents and business,” Cr Rutherford said.
“I want to assure everyone that this has been a decision Council has looked at carefully and one that we are so happy to be able to make.
“We have been working through the process over the last three months to trial and test the water treatment plant and then treat and test the water from the dam.
“I think we’ve reached a very positive outcome and one that will see us through to the completion of the pipeline.
“We can see the light at the end of the tunnel as we reconnect every household to their very own water source, knowing that every day that pipeline is getting closer and closer.

Water restrictions lifted...From Page 2
“I want to thank everyone for their patience and support during this period and recognise how big a step this truly is.”
The transition from carted water to water from the No 7 Dam will begin on Tuesday, 2 April 2024.
Information on the No 7 Dam, water storage, use and the Mount Morgan Water Supply Pipeline, can be found at www.rockhamptonregion.qld.gov.au.
Background information:
• Water levels in the Mount Morgan No 7 Dam currently sit at 97 per cent after spilling over in January 2024.
• Current projections suggest water storage in the dam would exceed the period required to construct the Mount Morgan Water Supply Pipeline.
• The Mount Morgan Water Supply Pipeline is a 28km potable water pipeline that will provide long-term water security to Mount Morgan.
• The pipeline project includes:
o Construction of a pipeline from the Pump Station at Gracemere to Mount Morgan
o Upgrade of the Old Capricorn Highway pump station
o Construction of a new reservoir and new pump station at Lucas Street Gracemere
o New pump station and small reservoir at Moonmera, which is approximately halfway along the pipeline route
o Upgrade to the Razorback Road leading into Mount Morgan while the pipeline is being laid
• The Pipeline is jointly funded by the Federal Government ($30 million), State Government ($40.4 million) and Rockhampton Regional Council ($17.8 million).
• Rockhampton Regional Council has been funding approximately 20 water carting trucks per day to deliver potable supplies to Mount Morgan for over 30 months, with the Queensland Government contributing $10.8 million toward carting costs.
• Water from the Mount Morgan No 7 Dam has undergone stringent water treatment and testing and meets all required drinking water guidelines.
• During the transition, residents may notice a slight change in taste which is the difference between water drawn from the Rockhampton Barrage and the Mount Morgan dam.
AN AWARD WINNING PROJECT
While development of the Heritage Mineral’s Project on the historic Mount Morgan Gold Mine is still is in progress, it seems like the State Government is giving it the stamp of approval.
The Premier’s Awards for Excellence recognises high performance and outstanding achievement across the Queensland public sector.
This year, nominations were received across five categories that aligned with the Queensland Government’s objectives for the community:
• More jobs in more industries
• Delivering education and social services
• Better health and wellbeing services
• Protecting our liveability and environment
• Enhancing our lifestyle through planning and infrastructure.
The 2023 Premier’s Awards for Excellence recipients were announced at a ceremony in Brisbane on Tuesday 26 March 2024.
The Heritage Minerals-led project to reinvigorate the historic Mount Morgan gold mine is creating 133 mining jobs in the regional community, which has faced economic challenges since gold mining ceased in Mount Morgan in 1990.
The project will establish a tailings processing plant to recover gold and copper, re-commercialising the remaining resources while delivering environmental remediation benefits.
This innovative project, which extends to 2028, will create 266 construction jobs and generate $40 million in new mining royalties
to the state over its first seven years of operation.
Given the amount of gold and copper remaining at the site, the tailings’ processing plant has the potential to continue operation for decades to come, creating longterm employment opportunities in Central Queensland.
Inter-agency collaboration between the Department of Resources and Queensland Treasury has been fundamental in planning and delivering this project, which has received financial support from the government’s Invested in Queensland program.
AROUND THE RIDGES
It’s been a busy time in Mount Morgan over the last few weekends with the Saint Patrick Bowls Day, the Easter Eggstravaganza at the Grand hotel and Arts and Crafts Cent Sale.
The annual Saint Paddy’s Day Bowls (Alex Teeney Memorial) was held at the Welfare bowls Club on Sunday, 17 March. About 25 lawn bowls players and nonplayers turned up for the day. Some players got into the spirit of the day wearing green in honour of St. Patrick.
Mount Morgan’s Grand Hotel held
an Easter Eggs-travaganza on 23 March 2024.
Between 15-20 children enjoyed the Easter activities throughout the day. There was also a large crowd in attendance for the Mega Easter Raffle during the day and at night.
About 45 people attended the Mount Morgan Arts and Crafts Cent Sale held at the Baree School of Arts Hall on Saturday, 6 April 2024.
Mount Morgan Arts and Crafts Group representative, Heather Barker said the weather prevented
people from turning up, but the people who attended had a great time.
MIRANI MESSAGE
With Stephen Andrew, MP
On Sunday, 24 March I joined the community for the restocking of the fish fingerlings at Dam No 7. We released 8200 yellow belly (golden perch) fingerlings which are the Dawson River strain.
It was an exciting time for children and adults alike including me for the connection, engagement, and unforgettable experience.
With the dam full and the grounds lush and green, it's a great recreational facility for the whole community. In 12 months, these little fish will have grown, and it'll be time to get the rods and reels out to try and catch one!
I am spending time in the southern part of my electorate over the coming weeks. If you see me come and say hello.
There are many important local issues and I want to hear your thoughts so I can continue to represent your views. On Thursday, 11 April from 1pm-3pm I will be available to chat in person in The Soldier’s Rooms.
Over the school holidays remember to take care on the roads (and double demerit points for offences).
A pilot program is currently operating across Queensland by the Transport and Main Roads Department targeting school zones. “In-built’ speed camera devices are being attached to the flashing school zone signs and operate during school zone hours.
The pilot is expected to improve safety for students, their families, teachers, and school crossing supervisors because the cameras are activated when a person enters the roadway, and can monitor and record any near-hits, traffic or road safety incidents.
As we move into Autumn may you enjoy your precious holiday time, appreciate the values of our heritage, and be sensitive to the quests for freedom and justice all around us.

What a good roll up of members who came along to our March Morning Tea. Leyland Barnett from Evolution Training was the guest speaker. Keeping our members up to date with what is out there is important. Members were able to ask Leyland questions and how they relate to situations on the road.
Thank you to our members who made donations and brought goodies to enjoy and helped set up and tidy up afterwards. It is appreciated.
We hope our members enjoyed their Easter. It is good to have some time to catch up with family and friends. Come along to our meetings and bring along your ideas. We are planning another bus trip and will advise when confirmed.
Check out 'Save the Date' on the back page of the Argus for the dates and times for our April Meeting and Musical Morning Tea.
Stay happy and healthy.
