Community garden upgrade nears completion Budding gardeners and local green thumbs will soon have the opportunity to get hands on with Mount Morgan’s community garden, with an exciting upgrade of the area nearing completion. Located at Mount Morgan’s Footbridge Corner, the area has seen an impressive transformation of late, thanks to the hard work of a number of local residents, through a work experience project. A joint venture between Neato Employment Services and the Australian Government, the project has seen the participation of six Mount Morgan residents – who have been carrying out weekly works to the site for the past four months. The upgrade is now nearing completion, and the area is taking on some major changes. Through the project, the area sees new garden beds – with ten raised beds in total, a new irrigation system, as well as the introduction of an outdoor setting and shade area. Discussing the project, Neato Work Experience Coordinator, Mr John Kerry said he is pleased with how the area is coming along. “I think the guys who have been working on the garden have done a fabulous job.” John said. “The garden looks a million dollars. It’s well designed, easier to use and it looks great.” Despite its improvements however, John said it hasn’t all been a bed of roses for the working crew – with January’s heavy rain and flash flooding literally washing away some of the team’s early work. “The project certainly has seen some setbacks.” John said.

“The extreme rain earlier in the year saw the entire area under water, and the guys lost a lot of their early work, along with the fence and a lot of our equipment.” Despite the setbacks however, the team has persevered, and are expecting to see the upgrade project wrapped up in the upcoming weeks. An official unveiling of the upgrade is set to take place at the end of this month. “We are really excited with how the area is looking and we look forward to seeing the area in full use.” John said. “We would like to welcome all to an official presentation at the end of the month. All are invited to come along and have a look at the area.” The presentation is set for 11am Monday, April 29. For further details on the opening, please contact John Kerry on 4922 0155.
