MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

IT RAINED, BUT NOT ON OUR PARADE!

After beautiful weather for the annual movie and fireworks at the No.7 Dam on Friday, 3 May 2024, Saturday, 4 May dawned wet and miserable.

A few stall holders opted not to trade, but the ones who stayed were rewarded with cool, cloudy weather with the rain staying away until the end of the afternoon.

With more rain predicted, the Golden Mount Festival organisers made the call to cancel the Sunday morning breakfast at the dam.

The Welcome to Country was performed by Donna Anderson and the official opening was performed by the Mayor of Rockhampton Regional Council, Tony Williams.

Once the formalities were over, entertainment started with the Bush Poet, John Bidgood. This was followed by Alisha and Amanda Sealy, Celeste Caught, Jaymon Bob and Pedro.

The two Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Incorporated Inc (MMPAD) sponsored Gold Digs were well supported with the Gold, Silver and Copper painted stones being recovered in under 10 minutes for both digs. Winners were - Junior - Audrey Logan (Gold), Summer Way (Silver) and Arthur Benham (Copper) and Senior - Dublin Camm (Gold), Mia McClurg (Silver) and Isiah Anderson (Copper).

FOSSICKING GPA CONSULTATION TO BEGIN SOON

Consultation on a potential fossicking area at the No 7 Mount Morgan Dam will begin in the coming weeks.

Rockhampton Regional Council has approved consultation to establish a General Permission Area at the dam as part of its Advancing Mount Morgan strategy.

The General Permission Area which will require approval by the Queensland Government allows licensed fossickers to access the site and fossick in the area for gold.

Under the General Permission Area, strict requirements are applied to ensure the safe and appropriate use of the site.

Rockhampton Regional Council will also be required to develop a Land Management Plan to support the General Permission Area which also requires approval from the Queensland Government.

Following community consultation, a further report will be brought to Council to consider the next steps in the process, including specific areas for fossicking, access to the site, parking and maintenance of the local landscape and environment.

Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tony Williams, said fossicking was part of Mount Morgan’s history and a General Permission Area would support greater tourism and visitation in the town.

“Gold mining is synonymous with the history and image of Mount Morgan,” Mayor Williams said.

“Mount Morgan is home to one of the richest gold mines in Australia with thousands of people travelling each year to visit the town and take in its history and character.

“A General Permission Area is another way in which Council, through Advance Rockhampton

is supporting local jobs and business in the area and working with the community to create new tourism opportunities.Division 5 Councillor, Cr Cherie Rutherford, said Council believed there was a genuine opportunity to attract more people to Mount Morgan and support economic growth and activity in the region.

“This has been a hot topic of conversation amongst residents and business for some time and it’s great to be taking this next step in the process.

“We want to hear from local residents, businesses and interested groups about their views on this proposal and how we potentially shape this opportunity going forward,” Cr Rutherford said.

“I want to assure local residents that Council will work with them to consider this initiative carefully and to make sure we are striking the right balance between new tourism opportunities and the preservation of our local environment.

“Gold and fossicking is woven into the town’s DNA and I think this is a great chance to reinvigorate those iconic characteristics at a community level.”

Advance Rockhampton’s Economic Development Manager, Wade Clark, said Advance Rockhampton had been working closely with stakeholders to identify suitable sites and support economic development of the local region.

“Whilst Advance Rockhampton has been working closely with Heritage Minerals over the last year to gear up for the gold and copper project, we have also been working on other activations including the General Permission Area to further diversify Mount Morgan economic offerings,” Mr Clark said.

“Opportunities to establish fossicking in Mount Morgan was a key finding of the Advancing Mount Morgan strategy and would help develop local business offerings in this space as well as supporting already established local businesses in the tourism, hospitality and accommodation sectors.”

At its Ordinary Council Meeting on 23 April 2024, Council resolved:

• To undertake community consultation on potentially establishing a recreational and tourist fossicking area through a General Permission Area (GPA) at No 7 Dam Mount Morgan (Lot 201 RN836502);

• That a further report be provided to Council outlining the outcomes of the community consultation process and any subsequent activities to progress this initiative.

Council previously considered two alternative sites to establish a General Permission Area at Horse Creek and Leydens Hill which were deemed unsuitable.

Updates on community consultation will be available in the coming weeks.

Two Mount Morgan businesses, Mount Morgan Outdoors and Silver Wattle Caravan Park established private fossicking areas.

Silver Wattle Caravan Park owner David Brant said seeking a GPA was a step in the right direction.

“We have had over 5000 people since 2021 when Eric Stevenson from Mount Morgan Outdoors starting pushing for a GPA for Mount Morgan.

Advance Rockhampton has explored areas around Leyden’s Hill and the Horse Creek areas, but these have been discounted as viable options.

Rodeo Snaps

Starting later than usual, the Gold Rush Rodeo proved to be a crowd pleaser. All events on the extended program had nominations which made for an entertaining evening of events.

Mount Morgan Rodeo Association President Karley Goody said the numbers were down on previous rodeos.

“The later start stopped a lot of people from turning up. The crowd that did attend were great,” she said.

“It was a good evening, with great weather and some great volunteers. Thank you to everyone for their support,” Karley said.

ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATIONS GATHERING SUPPORT

It’s been 109 years since the ANZAC legend began on Gallipoli, but with each passing year the support for commemoration services in Australia seems to increase every year. This certainly was the case with ANZAC Day in Mount Morgan.

Both Mount Morgan State High School and Mount Morgan Central State School held unique commemorative services and attendance at the Mount Morgan Dawn Service, the march and the 11 am service seems to be increasing with each passing year.

Noah Kielly from Mount Morgan State High summed up the sentiment across all services held in Mount Morgan.

“We meet, not to celebrate or glorify war, but rather to remember those who served our country during conflict and crisis.

“ANZAC Day is more than a national holiday - it is a fundamental Australian tradition,” Noah said.

Another student, Axel Royes reminded us that ANZAC Day is not merely a date, but a spirit.

Following the address, students paid tribute to some of the men from Mount Morgan who gave their lives. These men were miners, merchants, tailors, tradesmen and farm workers by placing their photographs in a “makeshift” grave.

Mount Morgan Central State School held a moving service remembering the spirit of the ANZACS. Students also attended the Dawn and 11 am service as well as marching in the annual ANZAC Day March.

Members fo the 35th Combat Engineering Squadron (from the 11th Engineering Regiment) provided the Catafalque Party, standing guard around the Cenotaph for the 11 am service, while the 5th Light Horse Regiment, Mount Morgan troop guarded the memorial for the Dawn Service.

The 35 CES has strong ties to Mount Morgan, having initially formed in Mount Morgan and were responsibile for building the Victor Jones Suspension Bridge in the early 2000’s.

Sergeant Steven Gross from the Squadron gave the ANZAC Day address.

“I am with you to remember those from Mount Morgan and the surrounding district of all generations who served our nation and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“Sadly our World War II Service members are now very few in number. Known as the “Greatest Generation” they helped our allies to defeat hate, cruelty and greed in Europe and across the IndoPacific,” he said.

He said these veterans, both women and men, who returned tempered by war, took on the task of rebuilding Australia.

“We are all in their debt and we pay our respects to

those of that generation of citizens still with us today.”

Sgt Gross said the men and women of today’s Australian Defence Force strive daily to emulate the qualities of self-sacrifice, courage and a fair go for others demonstrated by those who have came before the present generation of military personnel.

Sgt Gross also paid tribute to the 1900 Officers and Sailors of the Royal Australia Navy who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“For the majority of them, their grave has no headstone, and there was no burial service. Their ships quickly sank and became their eternal resting place.

“Today when our ships pass their location, we stop, say a prayer, and cast wreaths into the sea above where our ships are resting and rusting on the sea floor. We consider these sailors “forever on patrol” and recite these words:

“They have no Grave but the cruel sea No flowers lay at their head

A rusting hulk is their tombstone Afast on the ocean bed.”

Members of the community, along with the RSL, service personnel laid wreaths at the Cenotaph, paying tribute to all.

PERFECT SCORE FOR RAILWAY MUSEUM

Mount Morgan’s Railway Museum has achieved a perfect score in the annual Best of Queensland Experiences Program.

The Mount Morgan Railway Museum is operated by Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc [MMPAD]. MMPAD also operates the Explore Centre (Visitor Information).

The Best of Queensland Experiences Program (BOQEP) is an innovative program that guides the Queensland tourism industry to deliver exceptional transformational experiences. By creating positive word of mouth for Queensland it will help to attract more visitors, grow expenditure and increase market share.

The program has been developed in partnership with the state's Regional Tourism Organisations, the Queensland Tourism Industry Council and the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport. It identifies and recognises experiences that best bring the Queensland story to life and consistently deliver an exceptional customer experience.

The program is based on an independent set of criteria that incorporates online customer reviews, responds to consumer expectations and reflects industry best practice.

All operators assessed in the program receive an individual report providing valuable insights on consumer perceptions of their experience to drive business performance. The Best of Queensland Experiences are assessed on an annual basis.

The information available in this report is valued at more than $2,000.

Operators who are identified as Best of Queensland Experiences receive:

• Consumer advocacy by delivering exceptional experiences

• Best of Queensland Experiences are included in Tourism and Events Queensland’s preferred operator

database accessed by staff when planning marketing and activity

• Best of Queensland Experiences will receive prioritisation across all Tourism and Events Queensland marketing and activity including on Queensland.com

• Best of Queensland Experiences will receive a Stamp of Recognition which operators can use on their own marketing channels and TEQ will display the stamp through ATDW listings on Queensland.com

MMPAD President, Mr John Steinberger said the effort put in by all associated with the Mount Morgan Railway Museum is the reason why MMPAD has achieved this award.

“Our Board, volunteers, contractors and staff are integral to the successful operation of the Railway Museum,” he said.

“It is pleasing to see Mount Morgan in the spotlight for this achievement,” he said.

Mr Steinberger said MMPAD would continue with promoting the attractions and businesses in Mount Morgan.

Painting Has Commenced

You may have noticed the scaffolding that has appeared around the Soldiers Rooms Hall, signalling the eagerly anticipated commencement of the painting of the building. We have gone for a subdued neutral palette, to not only flow seamlessly from the interior to outside, but to avoid fading in our extreme conditions, as well as provide a suitable backdrop for any colour themed events such as weddings etc. The external walls will be a very pale grey, with white fretwork, and ironstone trim and window hoods. Internally the ceilings are being done in white, and upon an initial inspection, already opens the space up and gives a cavernous feel, which is grounded by the creamy beige walls with deep ocean picture rails and trim, and the timber floors. We are excited to see the finished product.

Golden Mount Festival

What a wonderful weekend it was for the Golden Mount Festival. While the Soldiers’ Rooms did not have a stall this year, our President, John Tuxworth manned the Men’s Shed stall and distributed flyers on behalf of our committee. A big shout out to the volunteers who organised the Golden Mount Festival. It’s a lot of work and the small crew of volunteers spend many hours in planning and running the event. Thank you!

MIRANI

MESSAGE

With Stephen Andrew, MP

Anzac Day commenced with a 3am rise in Marlborough. It was a time of reflection driving to attend a very moving Dawn Service at Alton Downs. Following that I headed to Mount Morgan for the tasty Gunfire Breakfast at the new Sub-branch RSL building. Thank you to the cooks for the hearty breakfast! It was a wonderful opportunity to meet RSL members and guests to listen to their concerns and views on what’s happening locally. In these moments I was able to share what I’m working on at State level.

Mirani Matters is a newsletter issued bi-monthly to bring the details of electorate matters to you. Please take a look and I welcome feedback on any article. Access online - https://stephenandrew.com.au/ newsletter/.

Such a privilege to sponsor the Golden Mount Festival and Mount Morgan Goldrush Rodeo again this year. Thank you to all the volunteers for your outstanding efforts in making these events bring together people

Anzac Day

It was rather poignant that we had to remove the portraits of the Soldiers off the walls for painting just prior to ANZAC Day, as it gave us a moment to reflect on what little we know about these men. We will be researching to try to find their details before returning them to the wall so they can appropriately be honoured, and not just be unknown faces. If you may know any information about any of these fellows, please pass it on to us to document. In coming editions of the Argus, we will post pictures to try to identify each of them and find out some of their stories.

Mount Morgan Arts Precinct Fundraiser

To keep up the successful momentum we have been so lucky to have with the Soldiers Rooms, we have commenced a fundraiser for the Arts Precinct to cover costs of the co-contribution portion of grant applications, usually 10% of the requested amount. Renovation activities will be ramping up soon, so if you are able to contribute to keep these lovely historical buildings, please go to www.mycause.com. au/p/343976/mount-morgan-arts-precinct or scan the QR code below.

near and far showcasing the heart of Mount Morgan. My ongoing concerns with traffic/road conditions have resulted in the current installation of two Transport and Main Roads Traffic Recording devices for monitoring vehicular usage on Moonmera Road. I will share the data with you once it’s received. An update on the speed cameras at school zones from TMR shows the speed cameras attached to school zone signs have issued over 10,000 fines since they became operational in August 2023. TMR believe the school zone cameras pilot program has been effective at reducing speeding. The pilot is current until June 2025. Data from August to March 2024 shows the school zone cameras discharged 7,105 fines to drivers caught speeding in the lower tier of up to 10kph over the limit. Over the same period, 2,801 fines were given to drivers captured speeding between 11 and 20kph over the limit, while 206 fines were given to motorists caught travelling between 21 and 30kph over. The cameras only issue fines during school zone hours, which are typically between 7am and 9am, and 2pm and 4pm. Please slow down in the school zones during these periods.

If there's anything I can assist you with, don't hesitate to reach out and if you happen to see me around, come say Hi!

FOND MEMORIES OF MOUNT MORGAN

Visiting the Mount Morgan Railway Museum recently were one-time residents Trevor and Marion Bowen (pictured).

Trevor started working at Mount Morgan Limited as an apprentice Fitter and Turner in 1948 and eventually worked his way up to Maintenance Foreman by the time of his departure from Mount Morgan in 1967.

The couple moved to Mount Bundey in the Northern Territory to a subsidiary company of Mount Morgan Limited - Mount Morgan Mining and Industrial.

Trevor was persauded to go to MML’s Mount Bundey operation by Alan McIntosh who was the assistant Mine Manager in Mount Morgan. Alan was leaving Mount Morgan as he had secured a job as Manager of the Mount Bundey operations.

After two years at Mount Bundey, Trevor and Marioan moved back to Queensland where he was employed as Maintenance Foreman at the Utah mine in Blackwater - a position he held for 12 and a half years. In 1981 Trevor moved across as Maintenance Foreman to Curragh Mine. Eleven years later Trevor retired and he and Marion moved to Yeppoon.

Some of Trevor and Marion’s memories include multiple dances each week.

“Sometimes there would be up to three dances - one at the Cardinal Hall, one at the Masonic and one at the Soldiers’ Rooms,” he said.

The Fred Cole Orchestra was the “in” dance orchestra of the time and it had a large following according to Trevor and Marion.

Trevor also remembers the myriad of sporting organisations and facilities in the down.

Trevor was a founding member of the Mount Morgan Pipe Band along with Frank Molloy. Frank and he were also involved in the Mount Morgan Cycling Club. “Marion and I learned to water ski on the No.7 Dam,” he said.

“We built a boat which was named Hijinks. We used it for water skiing,” he said.

Trevor and Marion both have a soft spot for Mount Morgan.

“It’s sad to see the town today, but we all had a wonderful time in the town,” he said.

BOULDER CREEK WIND FARM MEETING IN BOULDERCOMBE

More than 50 Bouldercombe residents attended a meeting held in Bouldercombe on Tuesday, 30 April.

The meeting was well conducted, both by the company itself and by the organisers from the Bouldy Renewables Group. Questions were taken from the floor and any questions not answered on the night are being collated by the Renewables Group and will be forwarded to the company. Aula presented quite detailed information about the Boulder Creek project and were able to correct a few misconceptions that were out in the community.

A meeting will be held in Mount Morgan in the near future, with date and time to be advised.

Residents Eager for Addition of New Street Trees

Rockhampton Regional Council’s free street tree initiative has received an overwhelming response from residents with more than 200 people putting their hand up to join the new program.

As part of Council’s Urban Greening Policy, the initiative aims to help residents beautify their street fronts for a cooler and greener region.

Parks, Sport and Public Spaces

Councillor Cherie Rutherford said it’s a great opportunity for residents to see their footpaths transformed and potentially an entire street.

“Council has been planting street trees for free at the request of homeowners for a long time, and this is something we want to encourage more of, which has led

us to develop this pilot program,”

Cr Rutherford said.

“Our initial aim is to plant more than 150 trees during the cooler months with priority given to areas with low urban canopy.

“Our parks team will plant selected species across the region to ensure consistency and suitability and will continue to then monitor the growth and health of the trees in the months ahead.

“The types of trees we have included in the program range in size from 6 to 12 metres tall once fully established and have lush green canopies or are a beautiful flowering tree in summertime and are either native to Queensland or recorded as naturalised in SouthEast Queensland.

“We will also provide residents with information about the tree species that was chosen for their footpath, so they too can help support the tree’s long-term health.

“I am really looking forward to seeing residents participate in this program, helping transform streets and bring more shade and greenery across our Region.”

Council will commence assessing all nominations this month and will notify all nominees of the outcome prior to planting street trees in the cooler months.

VOLUNTEER AWARD FOR FLYNN

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our community, generously devoting their time, energy, and talents to causes they are passionate about. They form the beating heart of our community groups, schools, sporting organisations, and are often the first to lend a hand during times of natural disaster.

As we approach National Volunteers Week (20-26th May 2024), Colin wishes to shine a spotlight on these local heroes, expressing our deep appreciation for their invaluable contributions. While it's challenging to single people out, there may be someone within your organisation who consistently goes above and beyond, deserving of special recognition.

Whether it's a longstanding member marking a significant anniversary, a newcomer who fearlessly embraced their role, or a behind-the-scenes stalwart without whom the group would falter, we invite nominations for these remarkable individuals to receive a Certificate of Appreciation. Nominate your

local heroes via our application form at: 2024 Flynn Volunteer Awards - Colin Boyce MP

A manual form is available on request, or from our offices, for those who are unable to complete these online.

Certificates will be sent to community groups for presentation to the deserving recipients. For those residing in the Gladstone, Emerald, and Gayndah areas, certificates can be collected from your respective Electorate Office.

Please note that nominees must reside within the Flynn Electorate, and in order to preserve the prestige and significance of the awards, each organisation may submit a maximum of five nominations per year. Nominations close on 31st May 2024.

We encourage you to share this information with any community groups, clubs, schools, or non-profit organisations you are affiliated with, encouraging them to participate in honouring our local volunteers.

Thank you, volunteers, for enriching our community and making it a better place for all.

SHOW PLANNING WELL UNDERWAY

Planning for the 2024 Mount Morgan Show to be held on 10 August 2024 is well underway. This year will see the 25th staging of this event since the annual shows recommenced in 1999 and the small dedicated committee is confident of providing a community event which has something for everyone.

All the normal show attractions of pavilions with arts and craft, art, photography, school work and Lego, farm and garden and horticulture, horses and cattle, poultry and caged birds will be on display. Back again this year are the popular Eden Bann Cuties Petting Zoo, Curley Lou with her Twisted Balloons and “Party Face” for face painting.

Also making an encore appearance is Gilmore Family Pig and Duck Races who proved to be a great success at last year’s Show. The committee also plans to again stage the Miner’s Challenge and further details will be published as the date draws closer but interested groups should start thinking about getting their teams together for this fun and exciting event.

Show Committee President

Heather Barker said the Show Program is available on the Shows web site mountmorganshow.com. au and copies will be available at various businesses around Town from mid June. Regular updates will also be posted on the Show’s Facebook page

Heather urged everyone who was interested in exhibiting at the Show to obtain a program to check on sections etc and to get their projects finalised and ready to enter. “The fuller the pavilions are the better”, Heather said.

Collecting Ephemera for Archival Collections

Community noticeboards can often reveal a host of information about the social activity of an area. Posters or fliers advertising dances or cultural events, sporting games, performances, lost animals or community gatherings highlight the beating pulse of the local area.

These print records of daily life help create a picture of sporting, educational and cultural activities which are immensely valuable in archival collections for historians or family researchers. But once the event is over, fliers, posters and programs are usually removed and thrown away, potentially losing all that local colour and history. That’s where places like the Rockhampton History Centre (located at the Rockhampton Southside Library) come into play.

A great variety of print ephemera from the region ends up in our Central Queensland collection, where special Vertical File collections hold vast quantities of paper-based items such as posters, programs, handbills and fliers which help tell the social history of our Central Queensland area.

A sneak peak at the Golden Mount Festival Vertical File in the collection reveals a history of activities over the years relating to this important community event.

We are very interested in continuing to capture the records associated with daily life, so please consider gathering any out-of-date print material you may have stored in your home, business or organisational archives and donating them to the regionally significant Central Queensland collection at the library.
