WATTLE DAY DRAWS NEAR

Mount Morgan bike trails move up a gear

“We spent a lot of time working with the passionate residents of Mount Morgan to map out the future of this historic town,” said Mayor Strelow. “These trails were one of the projects that the community was very excited about as a way to not only draw tourists but also further activate this stunning recreational area for residents. “Council’s economic development unit, Advance Rockhampton, have been collaborating closely with the community on the development of these trails, which will offer varying levels of difficulty for riders.” Divisional Councillor Cherie Rutherford said these trails are a major project for the community.

Mount Morgan is set to show the world how it rolls with construction well underway on 25kms of mountain bike trails near the No. 7 Dam, so get set to weave your way through historic hills of cycads and ironbark. The project is made possible through more than $600 000 in funding from Round 3 of the Works for Queensland program. Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the project would have some great benefits for the community. “The $600 million Works for Queensland program and the new $200 million COVID Works for Queensland plan are all about creating jobs and bringing real benefits to communities,” said Minister Hinchliffe. “This program has a great track record of kickstarting jobs and

investment in the Rockhampton Region. “Through the original Works for Queensland program, the Council has received more than $27 million for 37 projects, estimated to create or support almost 750 jobs, while the COVID-specific program will create or support up to 60 jobs. “Across the world, the pandemic has felled economies and Queensland has not been immune but we have an economic plan that is already in place and these programs are a significant part of those plans.”

“We have already seen how successful the First Turkey Mountain Bike Reserve has been as a tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around Australia,” said Cr Rutherford. “This world-class trail will do the same thing for Mount Morgan, as well as provide a fantastic place for people from across our Region to get out and explore.” The trails are expected to open before Christmas this year.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said this is one of the key projects that was identified in Council’s ‘Advancing Mount Morgan’ strategy, which was adopted in November last year. MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS DISCLAIMER

Wattle Day (A celebration of Australia and its people)

The first celebration of Wattle Day in more than one state on the same day took place, on 1 September 1910 in NSW, Victoria, and South Australia.

Then with the First World War (1914-1918) it was decided to sell wattle sprigs to raise money for the troops overseas, and later for maimed soldiers and women and children's charities. The date was changed to 1 August in NSW and other dates elsewhere to coincide with the best flowering of their local wattles from July (Qld) to late September (South Australia). In 1992 as a unifying gesture for this celebration, the first day of spring - 1 September - was proclaimed by the Governor-General, Sir Ninian Stephen, to be Australia's National Wattle Day for everyone across Australia to celebrate at the same time. The Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) is Australia's official floral emblem. 1 September is officially the start of Spring, a time when many Acacia species (commonly called wattles) are in flower. As one species of a large group of flora growing across Australia, the golden wattle is a symbol of unity. Wattle is ideally suited to withstand Australia's droughts, winds, and bushfires. Mount Morgan has a unique species of wattle called Acacia podalyriifolia – Common names for it are Mount Morgan wattle, Queensland silver wattle, Queensland wattle, pearl acacia, pearl wattle and silver wattle. The resilience of wattle represents the spirit of the Australian people, whose need for both unity and resilience has never been more relevant, to get through these difficult Covid-19 times. Several planned wattle festivals around Australia have been cancelled to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the community and Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. (MMPAD) have unfortunately had to cancel this year’s Wattle Fun Day. Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. (MMPAD) has held the Mount Morgan Wattle Fun Day on the first Saturday of September, up until 2019. This free family orientated activity commenced in 2013. The event is a full morning of fun held at the Historic Railway Complex and includes live entertainment, children’s amusement rides and some fantastic activities. The MMPAD Wattle Day award is also presented to a Mount Morgan local ‘Quiet Achiever”. Previous recipients of the award were Murray Hare, Jim Gould, Barry Taylor, Kirra Swain and Peter Richardson. Page 4

For past Wattle Day festivities, local Golden Mount Nursery proprietors Di and Murray Hare, kindly donated free wattle seedlings to attendees. The weather has not been favourable for growing wattle from seeds this year. Once the plants flower and seed it takes at least a month for them to germinate. This year if you are looking to purchase a wattle tree contact Golden Mount Nursery directly. Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. is looking forward to presenting the Wattle Day and Village Markets in 2021. Although 2020 is a year like no other, people are finding ways to celebrate all that we have in Australia. Why not greet each other with ‘Happy Wattle Day’, organise a picnic, morning tea for family and friends, go for a walk in the garden or bush, wear something yellow, or wear a sprig of Wattle What are you doing for National Wattle Day, Tuesday, 1 September this year? The Wattle by Henry Lawson I saw it in the days gone by, When the dead girl lay at rest, And the wattle and the native rose We placed upon her breast. I saw it in the long ago (And I've seen strong men die), And who, to wear the wattle, Hath better right than I? I've fought it through the world since then, And seen the best and worst, But always in the lands of men I held Australia first. I wrote for her, I fought for her, And when at last I lie, Then who, to wear the wattle, has A better right than I?

QAS NEWS It is that time of the year again when the Mount Morgan Local Ambulance Committee meets for its Annual General Meeting. This will take place on Sunday, 13 September at 3pm at the Mount Morgan Ambulance Station on Dee Street. COVID-19 protocols will be followed. I would like to thank all the committee members for their efforts in the last 12 months to keep the LAC going. As always, we are inviting new people to take part and join the committee. Our numbers are short and some of those that remain are looking to retire since time and tide do not wait for anybody. The Queensland Ambulance Service provides assistance and care to communities across Queensland in times of joy and in times of challenge. From delivering babies to responding to critical vehicle accidents, the ambulance service is the communities’ lifeline to hospital care. What many people don’t know is that our paramedics and Ambulance Stations are in turn supported by their communities through the efforts of the volunteer Local Ambulance Committees (LACs). These Committees are an important part of our service and they perform a variety of functions, including raising awareness of ambulance services through community engagement activities such as CPR Awareness; advocating for the placement of Automatic Defibrillators (AEDs) in prominent places; and fundraising to enhance QAS

MOUNT MORGAN POLICE NEWS Road Safety Week is almost upon us and the Queensland Police will be out on our roads enforcing the Fatal Five from the 24 - 28 August. The Fatal Five are Speeding, Drink Driving (including drugs), Seatbelts, Fatigue and Distraction. If all drivers adhered to these five rules then most accidents and subsequent injuries and deaths on our roads would be avoided. We are still seeing quite a few people being charged for Drink Driving in Mount Morgan lately. We live in such a small town I can not think of any reason why you would even risk such a foolish behaviour.

services such as education, training, or research opportunities for operational staff. I have personally benefitted from the efforts of Local Ambulance Committees, having trained and practiced procedures on mannequins purchased by the local LAC. This has given me the confidence and the ability to practice these skills in the real world. The other Mount Morgan QAS staff can testify similarly of the benefits these partnerships have brought to their knowledge and skills. We would like to invite you to partner with us in helping to make our community more resilient and better equipped to handle challenges as they arise. You can be young (minimum 18 years) or young at heart, super-fit, of average health or have a disability. From fundraising, to purchase additional resources for paramedics, to raising awareness of ambulance services through community engagement, to office bearer roles, we have a role that can suit you. You don’t need any prior skills or training, just a willingness to learn. We would love to have you on board. Meetings are every second month for approximately an hour, so your time commitment is not excessive. To learn about these opportunities, please come to the AGM on 12 September or call Kerrie on 0447 298 155. Until next time, Cameron Evers Officer In Charge QAS Mount Morgan leaving early if you can’t seem to make it to your destination on time. This would be preferable to not arriving at all. Please also remember to take your personal and property security seriously. Property crime is still prevalent in the area and a lot of it can be avoided if owners properly secure their valuables. We are seeing more businesses installing cameras which is great news. If you plan to commit crimes in and around our local businesses, please do ensure you smile for the camera at the same time since we probably already know you. Regards Sergeant Matt HARLING Mount Morgan Police

Its simple, if you plan to drink, plan NOT to drive. We are also seeing drivers being issued speeding infringements almost on a daily basis. The speed zones in and around Mount Morgan are well posted and designed to keep everyone safe, drivers and pedestrians alike. I would suggest Page 6

THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN An autodidact is a self-educated person. Someone who chooses the subject or subjects he or she will study. They select their own studying material, use their own methods and decide when and how often they will study. Many notable contributions to mankind and the world we live in have been made by autodidacts. Many have been awarded Nobel Prizes and other esteemed awards and plaudits. Prior to the late nineteenth century an advanced formal education was the privilege of a very small minority. And so it was that in 1879 some of the more snobbish Oxford University Press oversight committee members were contemptuous of James Murray, who had left school at 14, had not one degree to his name, and who had displayed the sheer audacity and presumption to present and apply for the position of Editor of what will become the Oxford English Dictionary. They are soon sat back upon their heels however, when James reels off a long list of ancient and modern languages in which he is proficient. THE PROFESSOR & THE MADMAN is the extraordinary true tale of madness, genius

and obsession. The story of two remarkable men who created history with the writing, compilation and editing of that most magnificent of tomes, the Oxford English Dictionary. Work on this greatest of lexicons had begun in 1857 but it had faltered and bogged down. This was one of the most ambitious and revolutionary projects ever undertaken in the history of the written word, a truly mammoth task. Professor James Murray (Mel Gibson) took on this gargantuan challenge of creating the most comprehensive dictionary ever compiled, but he knew that it would take him and his entire team more than a century to compile all known definitions in the English language. However James had a plan. By “crowdsourcing” the work, that is, by enlisting and gathering definitions from Englishspeaking people all over the world, the dictionary may be completed in mere decades.

Captain Richard

‘… His advent to Mt Morgan is enshrouded in a certain amount of obscurity. He is believed to have gone there in 1884, which would be two years after the discovery, and just when the fame of the field had gone abroad... A similar uncertainty exists about his first job. Some said he started as an engine driver and others as a night worker in the battery, but it was a subject that he never discussed himself. Whatever it was it was not long before Wesley Hall [the first general manager of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company Limited] must have seen that this young man could best be used in connexion with treatment processes... The Richard-Hall vat system was installed in 1892 and thereafter Captain Richard was called the "Chlorinator"…’ (“Mount Morgan In Capt. Recipients of Community Assistance Program announced Rockhampton Regional Council today allocated approximately $47,000 in funding across seven successful applications for the Community Assistance Program (CAP). Communities Councillor Drew Wickerson said it gave him a lot of pleasure to announce the recipients of the first round of CAP funding for the financial year. “This funding program is all about supporting events and projects that really bring benefits to our community, and the successful applications this round will do just that,” said Cr Wickerson. “In this round of funding we’ll see $15,000 go to the Rockhampton Bowls Club to renovate their upstairs function area. “As well as $15,000 which will go toward the Crompton Park Hack & Pony Club to rebuild their canteen. “Funding is also going toward a revamp of the playground at the Gundanoo Imbabee Community Childcare Centre, delivery of Challenge the Mountain’s virtual 2020 event, a Page 8

facelift for the visitor signage at Mount Morgan Railway, and library resources and games for Waraburra State School, as well as in-kind support for the CQ Special Children’s Christmas Party. “It is fantastic to be able to support these great projects through this funding program. “Last financial year Council was able to support 58 local organisations to deliver 63 projects over three funding rounds, seeing more than $340,000 of funding support provided to community groups across the region.” Applications for the second round of the 2020-2021 Community Assistance Program will open on 14 September. LIBRARY NEWS READ @ your local library

Readers of all ages continue to drop into the Mount Morgan Library each week to browse the shelves, surf the internet and select new resources to listen, watch, or read. People read for a variety of reasons and it was interesting to ask library patrons why they read; what they enjoyed reading and where they liked to read. With Adult Learners’ Week, Seniors Week and Children’s Book Week just around the corner, it was the perfect time to pose this question to our library visitors. Lorna Schuh is a romantic at heart and likes nothing better than settling into a comfortable chair at home and reading a romance with lovely large print.

Debra Alley likes keeping up to date with friends and family and does business by logging onto the free computers at the library and checking her emails. Emmet Ricks enjoys a trip to the library with his dad Cory and looking at the range of picture books on offer. Kristy Wellings loves curling up on a comfy lounge at home and watching horror DVDS that simply scare the living daylights out of her. Ray Schuh is a keen reader and has read most of the large print westerns on the shelves. He checks inside the front cover of each new book for his distinctive mark on the ‘I’ve Read It’ slip. If you haven’t visited a public library for a few years, come and take a look. The library of today is probably not the place you remember.

The Museum had its early beginning at a meeting held by the Mount Morgan Chambers of Commerce under the chairman ship of the President of the day, Mr A D Rowe on 9th June 1965. At this meeting, a committee was formed of which Mr A D Rowe President, Miss Vida Chardon Secretary and Mr W Thompson Treasurer, forming the Foundation Committee of Mount Morgan Historical Museum. The original building in East Street was donated to the Mount Morgan Chambers of Commerce for the purpose of establishing the museum by Mr J J Kelly a former Manager of Operations of Mount Morgan Limited, and was previously a business house trading as Dee Jay’s. 1967 The Museum was owned and controlled by the Mount Morgan Chamber of Commerce and was officially opened on Saturday 29th May 1967 by Mr George Gray, M.L.A. DEE RIVER OLDIES With the wattle trees out in bloom, spring is just around the corner. Members are looking forward to sunny days, but hoping that there will be some rain soon to fill the dam. Many can remember the days when you would turn on the tap and have no water. These were not easy days as it went on for months. Many can remember hearing the train which brought wagons of water to town. When they heard the train whistle they knew that within a few hours they would have a little water to wash their clothes. The town water back then came from Fletcher’s Creek.

Pride in Your Town

In our last edition we paid tribute to ladies who gave their time and wonderful talent to improve life in Mount Morgan. This issue we pay respect to some male members of our community who in past years devoted much of their skills to our town. All ladies and men have gone - but not forgotten.

Out first male citizen of great works must be Mr. George Mullins. Mr. Mullins was a big man in statue and his enormous work load even bigger. He owned Mullins café, and his adjacent shop was home to many agencies, Golden Casket and various insurance companies to name a few. His stock included Melvin Star bicycles, all electrical appliances and spare parts for most things that went wrong in the home workshops. His community work was so extensive we can only list most of his activities. He was District Commissioner of Scouting; a member of the Hospital Board; Show Society; and QATB; Fire Brigade; School of Arts; Rotary and Chamber of Commerce. Although he was involved in all those activities, perhaps he is most remembered as President of the “Back to Mount Morgan Week” committee of 1950. That week was an outstanding success and brought so many folk back to their home town which the Festival does in present time. It was a marathon of hard work. Rotary placed a plaque at the Big Dam in respect of all his outstanding work for the community. Well done George Mullins.

Treasurer. With George Mullins President, Nessie Chardon secretary and Frank Golding treasurer it is no wonder “The Week of 1950” was such a success. Frank was also involved in many committees and played a big part in the Catholic Church. He was a very good cricketer and also played a game of tennis. The Frank Golding Lookout honours his excellent part in the Mount’s history. For Mr. Elvert Lewis citizenship should be spelt in Capital letters. Elvert was supervisor of the Mount Morgan division of Capricornia. Electricity. He had a very pleasant personality and no matter which organisation required extra lighting for a function Elvert never disappointed them. Perhaps the greatest memory of his town effort is of Morgan Street during Christmas week. Christmas Eve was a big social event for Morgan Street. All shops were open, with huge crowds, bands playing, children with balloons, streamers etc (ice cream from Mullin’s café). Elvert made sure the entire length of the street was alight with many strands of coloured lights, and it remained so for the entire week. It was a tragedy that in a wild storm while working at the substation he lost his life. He is remembered by “The Light “in Morgan Street, so fitting because he was a bright light always working for the Community.

Second on our tribute list is Mr. Frank Golding. Frank was the local accountant and like George Mullins worked very hard for the community.

Now we pay tribute to our lovable Irish larrikin Mr. Alex Teeney. Alex came to Mount Morgan after the war years, where he had received a major injury when in the Navy. He began working at Mount Morgan Limited in his trade as an electrician, then married a local girl and they had two sons. Alex’s next move was to open a news agency in Morgan Street.

He was the female version of Nessie Chardon. While Nessie was Secretary of so many organisations, Frank was the

Alex and his wife later left Mount Morgan for the South but Alex returned home a few years later, alone. In his retirement he got

involved in every function that was happening in the Mount and his time, effort and hard work for Rotary deserves the highest praise. He was an outstanding citizen and always wore a very happy smile. You and your cheerful nature are missed Alex. There are so many men who gave so much of their talent to our town, and one that must be recalled is Mr. Fred Cole. Fred was a tennis player of the highest standard in Central Queensland. He selected five young keen players straight from school and with his patience, coaching and never complaining about being defeated so much, within two years that group won the A Grade Fixtures. All thanks goes from those school leavers to Fred. As a pianist he was outstanding and was always ready to give his time and talent whenever asked. His” Fred Cole Trio” was the best music one could enjoy dancing too. Finally we recall Mr. Frank Molloy. Frank, and his good wife Rose, looked after our Community Services Hall for years. Without their devotion we wonder if that hall would still be a feature in Mount Morgan today. Frank was always at the front of the Pipe Band showing his skill as the Drum Major, or on the bass drum, displaying a talent not many of us have. Our town needs people like Frank and Rose to enable it to continue as a pleasant place to reside, and one where your talent is appreciated. Many thanks to all these dedicated men who improved our town for years to come. Now it is our turn. Think clean – Be Tidy and always remember a random act of kindness. 26 AUGUST - 9 SEPTEMBER 2020
