History & Reflections

Pride in your Town

Continuing the last words from Dr Lorna McDonald on William Mackinlay’s story and the being of Mount Morgan.

the fact that the mountain was outside a proclaimed goldfield posed another difficulty.

While it is not possible to give the actual year in which Mackinlay discovered gold in the unlikely ironstone outcrop on the mountain summit, Rebecca, the youngest daughter, later said he found it while cutting a track through the dense scrub in order to take cattle to Crocodile Creek.

Claims in such areas were extremely hard to hold - as the first mining syndicate was to discover. Mary Mackinlay later told Rebecca that William suffered from asthma and therefore would have been physically incapable of the hard work involved in mining the mountain summit, but he might have suffered from an even more serious disability, as he died from “galloping consumption”.

It is therefore valid to assume that it could have been soon after he took charge of the Calliungal heifer station at Box Flat, but even if later it provided him with a steady income for some years, probably until mining operations began in 1882.With the help of his five children who were warned to keep the secret, stone was carried down the mountain side in large sugar bags to be washed and dollyed in the Dee. When Mackinlay’s wife begged him to peg out a claim his reply was “No one will know”. It is said that he did take samples to Rockhampton, but could not interest mining men in the peculiar black stone sprinkled with what looked like fool’s gold. This no doubt gave him a sense of false security which later proved to be simplistic. In January 1882 a rumour that over two thousand ounces of alluvial gold had been found at Westwood was described as a “weak hoax” on a prominent townsman, but it might well have been related to Ironstone Mountain. There are other factors which contributed to Mackinlay’s apparent complacency. In the first place “he was a prospector and fossicker rather than a mining man”, while

In addition to health problems his observations of other reef mines in the Rockhampton district would make him aware of the high cost of machinery and labour far beyond his resources. He was not a mining speculator; but a man with the simple need to provide for his family. In a gold hungry age, he was not greedy for great riches. Even though William Mackinlay discovered the gold which became Mount Morgan, because he worked secretly it was relatively easy for others to usurp the distinction. End of translation from the book by Dr Lorna McDonald. The Story goes on when Minnie Mackinlay, daughter of William, tells Sandy Gordon the secret her Dad had then life changes dramatically for all. Later Mount Morgan became known as the greatest gold mine of all. “Rockhampton, History of City and Distict” is available at our library if you wish to read further. Think Clean - Be Tidy

It’s a Mugs Game

By Graeme Meade

I bought a heap of school yearbooks off a lady; she also offered me a carton of printed coffee mugs, all from the Central Queensland area.

Breast Cancer Month Story & photos supplied by Tamara Alden.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The local Bidgerdii clinic organized a morning tea in honour of this event.

I am always on the lookout for Mount Morgan things, so I took a punt on it, maybe I would get lucky. I missed out on the yearbooks, but out of over 40 mugs I scored three from Mount Morgan.

We had people from all age groups attend this session. It was a very informal affair, with everyone just sitting around having a chat. The Survivors shared their stories, which reinforced the importance of self-checks and regular mammograms.

Two are from a 2001 reunion for the Mount Morgan Hospital and one from the Walterhall State School Reunion.

As conversation continued, it was discovered that everybody in the group was touched by Cancer in some way or another. At this point we began creating tags for our loved ones that had been marked by this affliction.

Walterhall State School, was first called Walter Hall State School, it opened on 9th July 1917 and closed on 31st March 1969. The school building is now a private residence - when you drive into Mount Morgan and look down into Walterhall you can see the distinctive roof line.

The group worked together to create a mini field of women for the Breast Cancer Network of Australia. This mini field can be found in the back of the Historical Museum. These 100 pink ladies represent the women diagnosed with Breast Cancer each year.

The back of the Walterhall mug has Calliungal North Baree State School 1904 – 1971 Reunion 22-25th September 1994. This building, at the top of a hill is also a private residence. It is good to see these old 100 plus year old buildings still alive and well. The photo on the mugs with the hospital on is a photo taken in the early 1900s, the one with the sketch says circa 1890, this hospital was opened on 30th August 1890. On the back is printed Mount Morgan Hospital Reunion 2001, someone must have organised a reunion for that year. The 2 mugs with the gold rings around the top are made by C. R. Hose Glassware. This Victorian company has been operating for 70 years. The mugs are made in China and printed by them.

Our group placed their tags onto some of the pink ladies, if you would like to do the same there are still more available at the Museum and the Bidgerdii clinic. They do not cost a thing and can represent your loved ones or provide words of encouragement for those still battling. Our mini field will remain in position until the 20th of October. We’d like to thank everyone for coming along and supporting this cause, you definitely made the morning special. Now remember, talk to your doctor about getting a mammogram and TAKE CARE!!

Legend and the Locals - Featuring Sara Storer

Over one hundred concert goers, witnessed the results of months of planning, organising and rehearsals when Country Legend, Sara Storer took to the stage with local artists, to perform at the Mount Morgan School of Arts. On Wednesday 4th October 2017 Mount Morgan Central State Primary School and Mount Morgan High School Students, along with several other talented locals, attended a one on one workshop with professional musician and conductor Luke MacIntosh, and the 2017 Country Music Awards Female Artist of the year Sara Storer.

The Workshop was a rare opportunity for locals to engage with other singers, and songwriters and receive encouragement to shine on the stage, singing with Sara.

Photo above & left: Locals attend the workshop.

Local music teacher Peter Camm, coordinated the workshop involving the locals and worked closely with promotor Kate Schlick, to ensure that the workshop and following concert ran smoothly. For some of the entertainers, this was the first time they had sung in public, while others were seasoned performers.

Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. President John Steinberger said “When the opportunity presented itself to become one of only twelve towns in Queensland to host this event, we jumped onboard.”

“Buffalo Bill” and “Come on Rain” were the songs chosen for the choir to perform with Sara on stage at the concert. From the moment the local performers entered the stage area to sing with Sara, they captivated the audience and held the crowd in the palm of their hands.

“This was a unique opportunity to not only bring such a talented Country Legend to Mount Morgan, but to encourage locals to get involved in the workshop and concert: A once in a lifetime chance!” he continued. MMPAD was very fortunate to receive funding from Rockhampton Regional Council and the Regional Arts Development Fund, (RADF), to assist with costs.

Concert a Resounding Success

5.

Congratulations to the Mount Morgan Central State Primary School and Mount Morgan High School Students who joined the Choir for the workshop and performed on the night. Primary School: Keeley Marshall, Jenny Henselien, Destiny Veber, Lyle Schneider, Chloe Kane, Abbie Tyne, William Coughran and Zachary Dobson. High School: Ebony Myors and Mitchell Turner. Thank you also to the parents and friends of the students who came along to show their support and encouragement. The hall resounded with cheers and applause as their performance came to an end. Sara praised the local choir for their outstanding support. The programme was jammed packed with talent and included a moving solo performance from Will Hearn (pictured above) who is a multi-instrumentalist from the Capricorn Coast. Locals including Cambo & Hamo, Suzie Camm, Denise & Don Barnette and Lyn Anstey kicked the night’s entertainment off. Lyn Anstey, a former Mount Morgan resident performed her composition, ‘The Town of Mount Morgan’, which she had written only days before the concert! Bouldercombe resident, twelve year old Stevie Finger captivated the audience with her sweet, clear voice as she sang her own composition followed by a duet with Sara.

Thank you to all our not so young locals who also attended the workshop and concert including: Di Coburn, Rachael Duggin, Sandra Kirk, Lyn Anstey, Jodi Nichols, Denise & Don Barnette, Peter & Suzie Camm and Mark Hamilton. Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. executive would like to thank all the members and volunteers who assisted in any way throughout the event. Thank you to Sara Storer and her team for choosing Mount Morgan as part of their tour and a special thank you to all who supported the event making it the success it was.

Pictured above: L-R Denise & Don Barnette & Peter Camm

Rockhampton resident Jodi Nichols (pictured right) was chosen to sing “Raining on the Plains” with Sara. A song previously recorded by Sara and John Williamson. Concert goers took advantage of the food and drink on offer before the concert and during interval, keeping the volunteers at the barbecue and bar busy.

MOUNT MORGAN POLICE NEWS Constable David EVANS

A good part of our time policing in Mount Morgan is obviously attending to jobs which come to our attention, either via POLICELINK or come to us as a result of a ‘000’ emergency call. What is POLICELINK? 131444 is the number to ring when community members wish to report non-urgent incidents to police or need police assistance in situations that are not an emergency. Non-urgent incidents include, but are not limited to, wilful damage to property, stealing offences, break and enters, stolen or unlawful use of motor vehicles and lost or found property. There are a number of benefits making a report to POLICELINK. • POLICELINK can be contacted 24/7. • It enables police crews to remain on the road and available for urgent jobs if needed. • POLICELINK handle two million calls per year and are highly trained in assisting community members who wish to report a non-urgent matter. • POLICELINK also manage general enquiries, special event reporting and disaster management support. Remember: ‘THINK POLICELINK’ Save Triple Zero (000) for emergencies. Please also be aware it is an offence to call (000) for non emergencies. On a more local level, it has become noticeable that a good number of properties still do not have house numbers clearly displayed out the front, where they can easily be seen by emergency services. This not only is inconvenient and wastes valuable time, but may mean that in an emergency, help may be slower getting to where it is needed. Everyone in the community can assist with all emergency services by ensuring house numbers are clear, and large enough to see from a distance. Reflective numbers are also good to assist in low light or at night. The Mount Morgan Station have handy wallet size cards that you can keep in your purse or wallet with the police link phone number and website on it, or just ask one of our local officers for one. Other types of reporting options include online and Policelink Smartphone App. Policelink reporting options free up operational police who can then focus on preventing and investigating crime in the community.

The Orange Dot Movie Review

By Larry at Fox Video It is 1914. As the Great War looms the vast Ottoman Empire is crumbling. Its once vibrant, multicultural capital, Constantinople (Instanbul), is about to be consumed by chaos. Michael Boghosian (Oscar Isaac, Star Wars) arrives in the cosmopolitan hub as a medical student determined to bring modern medicine back to Siroun, his ancestral village in Southern Turkey where Turkish Muslims and Armenian Christians have lived side by side in peace for centuries. Photo-journalist Chris Meyers (Christian Bale, BATMAN) has come to this exotic world to cover the geo-politics... But, there is another powerful reason for him being here... Chris is mesmerized by his love for Ana (Charlotte Le Bon, THE HUNDRED FOOT JOURNEY), an Armenian artist he has accompanied from Paris after the sudden death of her father.

But then Michael the med-student meets Ana, and their shared Armenian heritage sparks an attraction that explodes into a romantic rivalry between the two men, even as Michael hangs on to THE PROMISE from his past. After the Turks join the war on the side of the Nazis, the Empire turns violently against its own ethic minorities (although it should be pointed out that still today the Turkish Government vehemently denies this history).

Centenary of Beersheba Charge of the Light Horse. The Mount Morgan 5th Light Horse Troop will be commemorating the Centenary of the Australian Light Horse charge on Beersheba and the water wells.

As tensions rise with the outbreak of a worldwide war, our trio must set passions aside to try and survive as the world around them crumbles, and one of history’s darkest yet rarely told chapters unfolds before their eyes.

This will be held at Anzac Park on Sunday 29 October 2017 - 11am

Rodeo Association Motors on the Mount Winners

11.

The day began at the Mount Morgan Showgrounds, a beautiful spring day, when members from the All Classic Motor Club, (thanks to Mick and Glen), and the CQ Chev Club, (thanks to Trad and Don), started rolling in.

The soft sound of a rumbling V8 always brings joy to the heart, even when “karlos the kombi” drove in, he sounded good too. The event was well attended by other enthusiasts and locals including Todd Marshall, Blayne Porter, Doug Mckay, Schae Page and past locals Tony Miller and Jeremy Scott.

As usual, the hard working members of the Rodeo Association provided great food which was a hit with everyone. A couple of raffles helped raise money, these were won by J Hick and M May. Stress Less Espress came up and served great coffee. They drew a steady crowd throughout the day. After a few months of work and planning the day went well (with the few glitches expected). Many thanks to Tra, Grunta, Mick and Glen from All Classics, Ed / Mary Mckee, Jim Gould and the members of the Mt Morgan Rodeo Association.

This is the third “Motors on the Mount”. The event keeps getting better and better.
