LABOUR OF LOVE

-2022” is a historical account of the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) in Capricornia. Arlene said in 2018 she suggested that the history of the Capricornia Division be written as a promotional tool and to commemorate the 100 years of QCWA. Arlene, who has been a member of the Mount Morgan Branch of the QCWA for almost 30 years, considers the research, the writing and publication of the book to be her greatest written achievement. Arlene first started writing 36 years ago to help cope with the loss of losing her father 36 years ago. “Writing really helped me with this loss,” she said. Arlene has published 16 small books and has recently finished writing another small poetry book.

After four years and 10,000 hours of research and writing, Mount Morgan author, Arlene Roberts, “Labour of Love” has come to

fruition. “The Historical Journal of Country Women in Capricornia – 1944

“I have written a biography about my dad, who died of asbestos cancer, a short story about a girl who grows up in the country, a series of short stories about Australian animals (this was for my children), poetry books and a small history book about the Mount Morgan QCWA Branch,” she said. Writing the historical account of the Continued on Page 2

Labour of Love...From Page 1 QCWA (which Arlene considers family) was a journey of discovery. “The members of QCWA, past and present have all played a role in the history that is now recorded in this book. “It’s a testament to pioneering members who left us the beautiful legacy that we call, QCWA,” she said. Every project, no matter how big or how small, has its highs, lows and obstacles. “Time for me was one of the most difficult aspects - as some days I felt like there just wasn’t enough time to complete the task I set myself.

work they did and continue to do was definitely a high,” she said. Writing the book, according to Arlene opened her eyes to what life was like for women and families before and after the war. “These women had great pride in their communities. Back then, life was a lot different, but having an association like the QCWA gave them a voice, a place to meet other women and where they could learn new skills was something that was very much needed,” she said. “QCWA brought women together in friendship over the generations with many ladies making life-long friendships.

“The highs included the discovery of what members did, the innovative ideas they came up with to raise funds and the way in which QCWA members helped out during the war years,” she said.

“Writing this book has been a privilege and it has given me more respect then I already had for our association and the ladies who worked hard to improve living conditions - many of us take for granted what these ladies worked hard for,” she said.

“The ladies I have talked to while researching and the respect that you gain for the ladies and the

before us. “You could say this book has been a labour of love,” she said. “The use of photos also helps to portray the story being told seeing ladies travel over dirt tracks in a horse and buggy to attend a meeting wearing hats and gloves is an amazing sight.” “During my research I saw a picture of a line-up of horses and sulkies outside a hall where the QCWA ladies were having a meeting while the men were outside talking and the children were playing.” During her almost 30 years of membership of the QCWA Arlene gained second place statewide in what was the Country Women of the Year Quest in 2010. “It was a very special moment,” she said. Arlene also gained a Queensland UNAA award. The book was printed by Clark and Mackay Printers in Brisbane. Contact Arlene if you would like a copy of this Resource Book.

“COP” SERIES TO BE SHOT ON THE MOUNT You’ve heard of Starsky and Hutch and Cagney and Lacey… now meet Coch and Boules… the dynamic police duo who are transferred to Mount Morgan where they are tasked with solving a range of crimes.

This is the story line for a 10part web series produced by Blue Eagle Productions following the company’s successful Regional Arts Development Fund application of almost $10,000. The series will be shot entirely in Mount Morgan, with the lead roles of Coch and Boules being played by Mount Morgan actor and comic, Clint Lennox and

Rockhampton’s comic actor Jodie Van Der Wetering.

Blue Eagle Company owner, Ian Westley has been around the film industry since 2006 when his short film won the People’s Choice Award at the Rocky Fringe Festival. Most of his productions have been short films or documentaries. However, in 2016 Ian produced Lost and Found (which Clint starred in) and lasted over two hours. What will be unique about “Coch and Boules” is that the two leads – Clint and Jodie – will be improvising. “Some of the other actors will have

scripts – but for Clint and Jodie – it will be improvisation at its finest,” Ian said. Filming will start in October, hopefully completed in November with the series going online in early 2023. While the film is being shot in Mount Morgan it’s not a send-up about the town. “I have connections to Mount Morgan as does Clint – the only send up is about the two lead characters who through sheer, dumb luck, and not artful detective skills, manage to solve crimes,” Ian said.

Next steps on Mount Morgan Aquatic Centre Consultation to start in coming months An initial concept design for the Mount Morgan Aquatic Centre redevelopment went to Council recently, with community consultation on the project planned to take place in coming months.

“Last year it was announced that Council had been successful in our application for funding of $4.5 million through the State Government’s Resources Community Infrastructure Fund.

Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said this is an exciting step in the redevelopment of the Aquatic Centre.

“With this funding together with Council’s contribution we’re excited to progress these plans to create a redeveloped Aquatic Centre that will meet the needs of the community now and in the future.

“The current pool has been a valuable asset for the community for many years, but it is well and truly at end of life,” Councillor Rutherford said.

Page 4

“We know this facility plays a vital role for Mount Morgan and surrounding communities, and

MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

it’s really important to us that the community is involved in this process as we move forward. “The initial concept gives us a base layout for community consultation. From here we’ll undertake some further estimates to ensure the project is within budget before taking it to the community. “We’re planning to hold a community meeting in Mount Morgan in coming months to share more details and seek feedback, so please keep an ear out for dates and more information.”

Celebrating Mount Morgan’s aged care heroes

Aged Care Employee Day on 7 August will celebrate the dedicated people who selflessly care for the elderly living in seniors’ communities around Australia. Megan Cunningham and Sandra Marsh both work at the Carinity Summit Cottages aged care community in Mount Morgan. Megan is pictured above with Carinity Resident, Michael Reid. Megan has been working in aged care for four years. She organises engaging activities for Carinity Summit Cottages residents, whose ages are between 64 and 103 years. “I enjoy doing activities with the residents, getting together and having a laugh. It's lovely to see them enjoying themselves. Working with seniors is a very rewarding experience,” Megan said. “I have always been able to communicate well with others and enjoy being around people. I thought

aged care would be a good career choice and very satisfying.” Sandra who is a cook at Carinity Summit Cottages is in her tenth year working in aged care. “Not having any parents still living, this job gives me a connection to the older generation which is enjoyable and rewarding,” Sandra said. “I feel I am contributing to keeping our residents well nourished by providing good quality meals, and assisting to make their lives as happy as possible.” Executive Manager of Carinity Aged Care, Heidi Dowse, paid tribute to the Carinity Summit Cottages employees who selflessly care for local seniors, particularly during the trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our professional, compassionate and diligent staff have continued their fantastic care for our residents during a very difficult time, going above and beyond to deliver the best of care for these seniors,” Heidi said. “I thank them for their exemplary commitment to support some of their community’s most vulnerable people, while helping them to live with purpose every day.”

QCWA UPDATE Hello everyone.

On Monday, 18 July the Mount Morgan branch of the Q.C.W.A. played host to the Annual General Meeting of Mount Morgan, Gracemere, and Kalapa branches. The members arrived happy to be a part of the day and ready to share fun and friendship. In attendance was a very special guest, Q.C.W.A. Central Region State Vice President Tamara Stephenson who had travelled from Howard along with her parents who came along for the day. Also in attendance were Mrs Margaret Laughton the Capricornia Division President, Mrs Margaret Grieves the Capricornia Division Secretary, Mrs June Killeen the Capricornia Division Treasurer and Mrs Helen Limkin, the Capricornia Division Vice President and Mrs Christine Mackenzie Capricornia Division International Officer. The Chairman for the meeting was Rockhampton Regional Councillor Cherie Rutherford. Around 30 people were in attendance. It was a lovely morning; the sun was shining. In the hall the tables were decorated with table cloths and vases of Mount Morgan Wattle. The official ceremony began with the opening and welcome to everyone. Respects were paid to the traditional owners’ past, present and emerging. President Arlene Roberts introduced Gangulu Elder Donna Anderson and invited Donna to do welcome to country. It was amazing Donna spoke in Traditional Language and in English. It was really captivating and was a focal point of the morning. The branch showcased what had been achieved since July 2022 and spoke on one of the main highlights which was the welcoming of new members. Bringing women together is a main point along with sharing skills, learning new things and helping others. The branch has donated to the hospital, the school and this year they have been doing even more including Domestic Violence Packs, Toiletry Page 12

Packs for the hospital, helping more in the community, holding raffles and bringing gardening into the meetings. Trees have been donated to the school and the members look forward to planting more trees at the school on the 31 July. There are more functions planned for the year.

The branch executive for 20222023 were announced and then had their badges pinned on by the Q.C.W.A. State Vice President Tamara Stephenson. The Q.C.W.A. Mount Morgan Executive are as followsBranch President Mrs Arlene Roberts, Secretary Gille Major, Treasurer Savannah Alden, Vice President Colleen Anderson-Ross, Vice President Donna Anderson, International Officer Tammy Alden. The branch convenors to date are Marketing and Publicity convenor Sandy Spanner, Agricultural and Environment Convenor Miranda Kopittke and Membership Convenor Camilla Lommerse. This was a lovely meeting and following Gracemere and Kalapa branches Annual Meetings a lovely lunch was prepared for everyone to enjoy. This was catered for by B&G Feeds Catering Mount Morgan. Thank you to Birgitte and all of the ladies who prepared a virtual feast for everyone to enjoy including those with special diets. Thank you also to the Welfare Bowls Club for having the hall ready for us.

on 11 August. So come along and have some cake and help us celebrate the state wide Birthday. Don’t forget our branch cookbooks are on sale at the Railway Museum and Explore Centre. Remember ladies we meet at the green shed on the 3rd Monday of each month at 10 am. If you see our banner out front and you would like to meet the members or would like to become a part of our Mount Morgan Q.C.W.A. Family, please come in and say hello we are more than happy to welcome new members. Arlene Roberts Q.C.W.A. Mount Morgan Branch President.

After the meeting on Friday, 22 July at the Mount Morgan Central State School parade I had the pleasure of presenting our branch associate member Charlotte Alden with her Associate member’s badge. It is many years since the branch has had an associate member and it was really nice to present it to Charlotte in front of the school. As this is the Q.C.W.A. 100th State wide birthday this year, the branch will be cutting a birthday cake at the centre isle between the state school and the main street shops MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

Lost and Found in Bygone Days

Following on from my last article, historical Lost and Found notices also suggest that Mount Morganites owned lots of gold accessories. They regularly published notices in the Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton, Qld. : 1878-1954) to recover their lost treasures:

some instances, large amounts, possibly involving alcohol). Notices for lost money in the Morning Bulletin include:

‘Lost, gold nugget brooch at fete. Reward Grimes, c/o. Edgar, Jeweller, East Street [Mount Morgan]’ (10 November 1911).

*The lost amount of £6 in 1918 would be worth about $570 today (RBA Pre-Decimal Inflation Calculator).

THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review DOG When Osama Bin Laden, sitting playing Playstation in his family compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan in 2011 was abruptly interrupted by Seal Team Six when they so rudely entered without even knocking, a key SEAL and member of that team was a tough battle-scarred soldier named Cairo. A Belgian Malinois, this dog had been through many battles and skirmishes, saved many lives, taken down others, been shot through the chest and leg and was not expected to survive, but he was choppered to the Field Hospital in Afghanistan and put back together with metal plates and screws not by veterinarians but by highly skilled combat surgeons. Cairo was a legend and an indispensable member of the team. He had learned how to attack a target, to latch on and release upon command, to fly in an open chopper, to skydive, to sniff out improvised explosive devices and weapons, to maintain silence while moving quickly and quietly through harsh and unforgiving terrain - and he instinctively knew

threat from non-threat, right from wrong, good from bad. Often confused with the Alsatian or German Shepherd, the Belgian Malinois is a totally different breed and they are intensely loyal, intelligent, fearless and powerful dogs. Their history as war dogs goes way back, but they have been officially recognized as part of military forces since World War One, with the US then creating their K-9 Corps at the beginning of the US engagement in World War Two in early 1942. Belgian Malinois are also essential and valued members of the Australian Police and Defence Forces. Like any other soldier however, war dogs can also be traumatised and suffer from PTSD, and being a highly trained, highly skilled lethal living weapon, this can present a very unique set of serious hazards and concerns... Such is the case with former Army Ranger, Belgian Malinois, Lulu. Another member of Lulu’s unit, exRanger Jackson Briggs (Channing Tatum, also co-director) has been informed that his close friend and

Lulu’s former handler has died in a car accident. The family have requested of the army that both Briggs and Lulu be present for the funeral, and The Brass are keen to see the family’s wishes fulfilled. With Lulu, who is showing serious signs of aggression, by his side, Army Ranger Briggs races down the Pacific coast to make it to their destination on time. Along the way Briggs and Lulu drive each other completely crazy, break a whole bunch of laws, dice with death and learn how to let down their respective guards if they’re to have at the very least, a fighting chance of finding happiness. DOG is one hour and forty minutes long and never a dull moment. It is rated M for “coarse language and drug use”, but we think it would comfortably slot into the PG13 category - use your own filter. “Every dog has its day.” Much more than just another fluffy puppy movie. DOG... Loved it!

THIRSTY AS A CAMEL? CHECK OUT SNOOPY’S PLACE BOMBS AWAY

Digging a hole for a stump could have gone horribly wrong for Brian Mattschoss on Saturday afternoon when the person helping him came across what appeared to be an unexploded “bomb” or grendade.

After about 40 years of performing maintenance work at Mount Morgan’s Railway Hotel, new licensee, Paul Gleeson has decided to name the remodelled and rebadged Bottle Shop Snoopy’s Place as a nod to the commitment shown by Arthur “Snoopy” Howlett. The Bottle Shop remodelling took placer earlier this year, and was rebadged under the Thirsty Camel Brand. The official opening of the Bottle Shop took place between 25 - 31 July with a $1000.00 Thirsty Camel giftcard being won by Dawn Standen.

Google research showed that the ordinance resembled a First World War Shell that had been unearthed in England. “It was lucky we were only digging with a shovel and not a jack hammer,” Brian said. The police recovered the unexploded and unidentified shell and passed it on to the army for handling.

LIBRARY NEWS If you have been to the Mount Morgan Library recently you may have noticed some changes. The tall, angled shelves of Adult Fiction, non-fiction and Large Print have been replaced with straight runs of shorter shelving. The new layout makes the library lighter and roomier, and the shelves are a better height for staff and patrons. Some of our books have moved, so please ask staff if you have trouble finding anything. The lounge and activity spaces in the library have also been expanded with new furniture so grab a book or newspaper and come try it out. Multicultural Month August is Multicultural Queensland Month. The theme for Multicultural Queensland Month 2022 is ‘inclusion in action’ with a focus on breaking down language barriers.
