Malfunction in these areas lead to the most commonly cited reason for poor project performance: communication failure. Your achievement as a Project Manager is directly tied to your ability to communicate effectively and influence the stakeholders. This session will increase awareness of your own personal communication style, how you impact others, communication styles, filters, generational diversity in the workplace, communications protocols, channels, and processes.
Tuesday, March 15 • 12:30pm–3:30pm • $125 [ 3.0 AAA Structured LHs; 3.0 BOMI CPDs; 0.3 IDCEC CEUs ] T10 • Successful Project Management Part 2: Discipline and Effective Communications AR CO EN ID PM The most common reason for poor project performance is communication failure. This collapse occurs many times because of poor management of communication channels and stakeholder expectations. This session will give you the tools needed to effectively manage communications, understand who needs what, and when. Also highlighted will be the impact of communication planning on the success of your project, the value of stakeholder analysis, the importance of roles, how an information distribution matrix can take the stress and guesswork out of communicating project information, status reporting, protocols and tips for effective communications management.

Vice President, Consulting, HOK Wednesday, March 16 • 1:00pm–2:00pm • $45 [ 1.0 AAA Structured LHs; 1.0 BOMI CPDs; 0.1 IDCEC CEUs ] W12 • Managing Efficient, Cost Effective Real Estate Decisions and its Impact on Employees AR CO EN ID PM Managing efficient, cost effective real estate decisions in a tight labour market brings its own unique set of challenges. Most organizations measure Employee Engagement with an understanding that engaged employees are more loyal, more productive and provide better service to clients - all of which contribute to the bottom line. At the same time, Real Estate groups are constantly challenged to reduce the costs of real estate, to ‘do more with less’, and consider new workplace alternatives based on their financial advantages. Employees, however, are not always thrilled with the changes. This session will explore how to engage employees and leaders in the process of workplace change and solution development.

Among many other firsts, what’s most impressive is that these ambitious goals Dennis Cuku Jennifer were met ahead of schedule and under budget. The demand for this Hancock type of sustainable and affordable product is growing rapidly in Alberta. When this increase in demand is coupled with the imminent regulatory changes coming for the built environment, The Mosaic Centre business model becomes an important learning point for future projects. In this presentation, the presenters, Dennis and Jennifer will share all of the ingredients in the Mosaic Centre’s special (but not secret) recipe. Taking a financial focus, they will cover the cost breakdown of the project as well as the innovative leasing strategy employed to secure project
financing. In addition, the mechanics of the IPD contract model will be explored in detail with an emphasis on lessons learned and suggestions for improvements. Jennifer will provide a side-byside comparison to a traditional project in an effort to present the case for a Better Way to build. The presentation will conclude with speakers examining the open-source architectural and construction details that enabled The Mosaic Centre team to meet their impressive targets. Get ahead of the game and attend this presentation to learn about the energy provisions that will arise under section 9.36 of the Alberta Building Code over the next year. Providing an overview of the new energy efficiency requirements, speaker Murray Frank, will address how to adhere to these changes correctly and economically. Taking a case study approach, Murray will present first hand practical knowledge on compliance paths and touch on the trials and tribulations derived from provinces that have already gone through this transition.
Wednesday, March 16 • 10:30am–12:30pm • $65 [ 2.0 AAA Structured LHs; BOMI 2.0 CPDs; 0.2 IDCEC HSW-Building Code CEUs ] W05 • Fenestration Fun: Demystifying the New Harmonized Window, Door and Skylight Standards AR BC CO EN ID In the past, windows were manufactured under 3 different standards in North America, and doors and skylights were not manufactured under any standard at all. This all changed for Alberta in November of this year when the Alberta Building Code required that all windows, doors, skylights, and tubular day lighting devices be manufactured under a new, North American harmonized standard. It was expected that this transition would have minimal impact on builders; however, the experience gained in the early adoption regions like British Columbia has shown that this transition has had a significant bearing on designers, builders and building officials. This presentation will drill into the challenges and prepare you for the significant reduction of issues when dealing with the adherence to these new standards. Learn about what manufacturers have gone through, understand Performance Grade, what to look for on new labels and most importantly, how to avoid costly mistakes.

Modern buildings have successfully achieved better weather-tightness. Although this results in more efficient buildings, the side effects of condensation and poor air circulation can be many. This presentation will summarize these challenges, expanding on the tools used to identify and analyze them (temperature-gradient calculation, WUFI modeling, finite- Amir Hassan elements simulation). Taking a solutions-based approach, the speaker will present proven methodology on how to identify, solve and combat these issues in today’s built environment, including but not limited to revised wall design, foam and the use of other insulation technique, heat curtains and breathable membranes. Furthermore, the presenter will also address matters such as the difference in building envelope design between hot and cold climates and ice-damming reduction methods. Some light will be shed on the effects of new energy codes on building envelope assemblies in Canada. Speaker: Amir Hassan, Building Science Manager, WSP Canada Inc.

Tuesday, March 15 • 8:30am–10:00am • $55 [ 1.5 Structured LHs; BOMI 1.5 CPDs; 0.1 IDCEC CEUs ] T04 • Spelling BIM with 5 T’s – The Critical Components of Planning Robust Virtual Construction AR CO EN ID Traditionally, construction is a reactive process, a constant juggling act of organizing trades, vetting information from suppliers and chasing down drawings while desperately trying to keep to the client’s schedule. Conversely, BIM is a process of proactive planning beginning with the end in mind. It can be used to test design assumptions, track assets, coordinate building systems or to facilitate operation and maintenance activities, just to name a few. However, in order to take full advantage of Daniel Doherty today’s advanced BIM technologies and processes, project teams must consider 5 critical areas, that if overlooked, will diminish the value of the digital information. This presentation will identify and expand on those 5 critical areas, explaining why they are critical to gaining maximum benefit from BIM. Attendees will gain technical insight on how and when information is entered into models and examples of information flow between platforms. The presenter will expand on Canadian and American documents and contractual tools readily available during implementation. Additionally, the presenter will highlight how to assemble and manage effective project teams and how to recognize areas of weakness in project execution planning. Speaker: Daniel Doherty, Manager of Virtual Construction, Clark Builders

This seminar expands the view of sustainability to include social and economic consciousness, with particular focus on inclusion of human health and wellness. The Laura Lee Ross presenter will explore the idea that well-designed space, in all its forms — at the scale of urban planning, of building architecture, and of the technology-enabled workplace — can become a catalyst for wellness. Speaker: Laura Lee Ross, D.I.D., LEED AP, Workplace Specialist, A&D Market Manager, Alberta, Living Building Challenge Ambassador
Tuesday, March 15 • 11:00am–12:00pm • $45 [ 1.0 AAA Structured LHs; 1.0 BOMI CPDs; 0.1 IDCEC CEUs ] T08 • Building a Growth Driven Organization in a Volatile Economy AR CO EN ID PD PM Building a growth driven organization in a volatile economy can be accomplished. Many organizations fail to outperform the market because they have no plan, no repeatable process, and no clear vision as to how to get there. They are busy being busy and while times are good, as the saying goes “The tide floats all boats”. This session is designed to examine the four key pillars of creating a growth driven Chad Banman organization that leverages the one key thing that makes everyone different – their PEOPLE. Focusing on skills, staff, structure and strategy the presenter will expand on what is required in each of those areas for growth to occur, even in a volatile economy. Speaker: Chad Banman, President, Sandler Training

P r e s e n t e d by Appropriate material selection and use is an important part of the built environment. It not only provides aesthetic qualities but often must also offer functional abilities to develop mood, efficiency and comfort in the space. Acoustical comfort can be an important attribute of integrated design and this presentation will offer a holistic approach to solving design and installation issues to achieve optimum acoustical comfort based on end use. Integration solutions will be offered by ceiling, commercial furniture, flooring and sound masking consultants.
P r e s e n t e d by In commercial construction, design consultants are a manufacturer’s target customer. They wield great decision making powers, often deciding which base bid or approved products will be allowed on a project. This presentation offers technical representatives with an inside look at their needs, and how technical representatives can play an integrated role on a project team by providing expert advice on the suitability of products.
