Customer Services Strategist, Award-Winning Author Thursday, Nov. 6 // 8:00-10:00 // arabian [BOMI 2.0 CPDs | AAA= 2.0 Structured] T03 • Leading a Customer-Focused Team PD Imagine leading a team whose service is so outstanding it becomes your brand. Your team becomes what you always knew it could be – one of a kind, defying comparison. Customers hear about you, are drawn to you, and refuse to leave you because your team is the industry Service Icon. You are one of the few leaders who no longer has to deal with the hassles of constant staff turnover, trivial customer complaints, and interpersonal staff pettiness. You and your team’s reputation for excellence spreads. What if as a manager, you no longer had to deal with people problems? Freeing yourself from putting-out-fires and instead focusing on growing your business is one thing if you have teams of HR people. But if you’re a manager of a small to medium-sized organization where you need to deal with hiring, training, and performance issues on your own, it’s easy to get bogged-down. • Motivate and engage employees without paying premium wages, promotions, or pricy perks • Become an employer of choice, where team members feel a sense of purpose 6
• Your service brand becomes your key differentiator, where price becomes less relevant • Your team adapts to changing customer needs, so you capitalize on trends You will learn how to: • Enhance your organization’s customer service culture • Boost productivity and morale by tapping into the #1 employee motivator (hint: it isn’t money or recognition) • Eliminate most of the people problems that divert energy from the real task of satisfying customers • Empower employees to make better choices; both for customers and for the organization • and more You will walk away from this seminar with a TURNKEY SYSTEM that merely takes 90 minutes a month, and creates the kind of customer service culture that’s so powerful that you become your industry’s Service Icon.
Thursday, Nov. 6 // 11:00-12:30 // arabian [BOMI 1.5 CPDs | AAA= 1.5 Structured] T10 • Becoming a Trusted Advisor PD This session is designed for business-owners, managers, and team members who want to: • Strengthen customer loyalty • Increase spending per customer • Re-energize customer service mission and focus Participants learn the Influence with Ease ® approach to: • Shift from reactive ‘order-taking’ towards proactive business-building • Increase revenues by 16% with a six-word question • Move beyond repeat business to create loyalty (there is a difference) • Prevent customers from defecting just to save a few dollars • Disarm cynics with your ‘grand intention’ • Create trust with anyone in under 30 seconds – even when they’re stressed • Tap the ‘humility advantage’ to overcome resistance • and more Influence with Ease ® applies equally well with external customers or internal co-workers. In this session no one feels left-out.

Our colour forecasts are the result of such research, utilizing the full spectrum of regional, cultural, and consumer knowledge of our global colourists. We invite you to explore the possibilities of the full palettes, themes, and trends of the 2015 season. M e d i a S p o n so r Thursday, Nov. 6 // 11:00-12:30 // palomino d [BOMI 1.5 CPDs | IDCEC=0.1 CEU | AAA =1.5 Structured] T07 • The Art and Architecture of Colour AD We live in a sea of Light and Colour but few people understand just how colours and light affect our bodies and behaviour in the spaces we create. In the world of design and marketing, perception is key to driving behaviour. Expert use of colour influences the effectiveness of our designs and our ability to be productive, prosperous and healthy whether commercial, retail, hospitality or residential. Learn exactly how colour influences not only your designs but the experience of those traveling through living in them. Discover the evolution of colour and trends and how and why this is necessary, learn how colour behaves, how to select and use the ‘right’ colour/s easily and finally understand what it all means for your business and life. Attendees will leave “Colour Confident” — understanding how color drives the human physiology and psychology while knowing which color/s to use to support the primary purpose of the rooms in which you live and work.

Thursday, Nov. 6 // 1:00-3:00 // Palomino A [BOMI 2.0 CPDs | IDCEC=0.2 CEU | AAA =2.0 Structured] T12 • You Are Not Your Job! – Preventing Burn-Out To Create Sustainable Work/Life Balance PD Professionals’ most important “product” is their creativity. Clients and employers expect innovative and creative solutions to their complex design problems and depend upon their workers to deliver results. It’s critical, therefore, that people cultivate inspiration and replenish it with a healthy work/ life balance based on core values, confident decision-making skills, and a visionary outlook. Without it, business people quickly burn out and produce mediocre results. Attendees will learn unconventional tools and strategies to help them be good stewards of their time, energy, and creativity…the 3 most important resources of their professional and personal lives regardless of economic conditions. Through interactive lecture, small group discussion, worksheets, real-life stories and games, attendees will: • Explore the direct correlation between sustainable design concepts, creativity and work/life balance. • Identify & reclaim core values. • Test intuition as an effective decision-making tool. • Develop a personal benchmark for “success.” • Create an action plan based on inspired vision & intention rather than just “goals.”

As of January 1, 2014, workers and employers that contravene OHS legislation can be issued tickets by OHS officers. Officers now have the ability to write tickets on the spot, a maximum of $500, which, if not paid within 21 days, may result in a warrant of arrest. The administrative penalty portion of the program allows OH&S officers to charge employers a fine of up to $10,000 per day per infraction. This presentation will shed some light on:
To achieve the next level of performance in construction waste management, project teams will have to develop a deeper understanding of how construction waste is generated. The University of Calgary has instituted a campus-wide construction waste management program that is providing the context for the campus to make dramatic reductions in waste sent to landfill. Presenters will share ‘How’ and ‘Why’ the university implemented a strategic approach to construction waste and how the system has been integrated into existing processes. The presenters will share the specific insight gathered from the first year of the program’s operation. The presentation will address questions including:
• The differences between the ticketing process and the administrative penalty process. • The differences in OH&S Legislation and the Provincial Offences Procedure Act. • The purpose of the new legislation. • How the government is proceeding with the change & implementation of the changes. • The change in the powers of an OH&S officer (now acting as a Peace Officer). • The 67 actual sections of the Codes which can have tickets attached Presenter: Elliott Irwin, ACSA Advisor, Alberta Construction Safety Association & OH&S Officer
Wednesday, Nov. 5 // 8:00-9:30 // palomino b [BOMI 1.5 CPDs | IDCEC= 0.1 CEU | AAA = 1.5 Structured] W04 • Building in Nature’s Image AD CO GR The presentation shares builder’s experience in adapting resilience science, biomimicry, and the sciences of life into a Kevin Stack Melissa O’Mara holistic doer’s framework of building science for the design and construction of our homes. Examples and case studies from constructed projects, including systems and performance data, will be shared. A novel set of metrics drawn from the living world and ecosystem in which a project is immersed, ecological performance standards, and how to calculate them, will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on how to implement this framework within existing codes, green building standards and rating systems. The session will conclude with an interactive challenge with participants — to discuss barriers and enablers of change — from pilot projects to mainstream adoption. Presenters: Melissa O’Mara, Transformational Leadership Consultant, Presence at Work Kevin Stack, Northeast Green Building Consulting

Presenter: Patricia Wilson, Director, Civil Enforcement, Consolidated Civil Enforcement
You’ve just had a workplace incident at one of your sites. It’s sent a wave of emotion throughout you, your organization, and the community. Government, clients, families, your workers, and the media are all pressuring you for information and answers. And while you know you need to respond, you’re probably asking yourself a lot of the same questions. As prepared as you thought you were for this type of tragedy, it still came about quickly, and of course, unexpectedly. While you’re struggling to understand the situation you’re facing, and focusing your attention on steps to prevent it from happening again, seemingly everything and everyone else is focused on you. You’re putting on a brave face, but deep down inside, you’re finding it tough just to keep the operation going, and your head above the water. At the end of our presentation, attendees should be able: a) to identify, and understand the statutory reporting requirements that are activated immediately following a workplace incident; b) to identify, recognize, anticipate, and prepare for the various challenges, expected and unexpected, that will require their attention following a workplace incident.

Since its introduction much has been stated as to the promise of better, cheaper and risk-free documentation in support of faster, economic and efficient construction – all while improving a building’s environmental footprint. Have these promises come true? Partially, but not to the degree we have expected. BIM has featured predominantly in stunning once-in-a-lifetime projects such as arenas, museums and skyscrapers that reach atmospheric levels. These examples are well outside the reach of most involved in the design and delivery of buildings. Almost 80% of all buildings cost less than $8 million to construct, which then begs the question – if BIM cannot work at this every day, common level then what can we do? This presentation will first introduce everyone to the work at the Canada BIM Council by its current president and how it serves as the business voice of Canada’s BIM community. Then the presentation will launch into some case studies where BIM has been able to solve some tricky everyday problems highlighting how it can be a powerful vehicle for enhanced collaboration not only across the AEC team but beyond into the entire supply chain associated with improving the design, procurement, assembly and operation of the majority of Canada’s infrastructure.
