Network, learn, and grow with fellow industry professionals as we hear from keynote speaker, Gregg Brown. GREGG BROWN
Disruption and resilience – two buzz words we can’t get away from – and that’s for a reason. Speaking to the resilience side of the equation, Gregg will discuss how to hone your resilience in a constantly evolving, and at times ambiguous, industry. As an industry, and as individuals, we are under tremendous pressure to keep things together when real outbreaks or metaphorical ‘outbreaks’ – such as new technology implementations – hit at rampant speeds. Agile changes are required to keep ahead and manage these types of disruptions. The impact of these changes can sidetrack you, your colleagues, stall your organization and even allow mistakes to happen. These days, people find it extremely challenging to keep up with change in their organizations given the relentless pressure to do more – faster, better and with less. What most change models don’t address is how to improve our capability to handle change. Research has shown that resilience – the ability to handle multiple changes effectively – can be learned. All of us can develop our ability to be resilient and have fewer ‘breakdowns’ to whatever type of outbreak we may be experiencing. In this interactive, powerful, and thought-provoking keynote, you will learn how to acquire the critical mindset and techniques needed to deal with multiple changes – whether you a leader of an organization, middle management, or in a junior level position, you don’t want to miss this talk. Speaker: Gregg Brown, Change Management Specialist, Keynote Speaker, Author

SUPPORTED BY
[ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1.0 General Hour IDCEC Approved ] Technology is altering the way we interact with our surroundings. Urban space or office space, public art or brand activation, retail or hospitality… Creating meaningful human connections through the built environment is increasingly difficult as attention spans diminish and instagrammability drives behaviour. The integration of experiential design and technology is expanding the boundaries of our discipline; propelling us to become more inventive in creating interactive programs, design-led experiences, and immersive environments. In this year’s Interior Design Keynote, we’ll hear from Mike Brown, a leading creative mind known for designing environments and experiences that connect, provoke and inspire. Mike will profile his methods and selected projects, and expand on his own sources of inspiration and overall best practices. Viewing the built environment as a narrative story, the Keynote will consider how creative strategies, interactive technologies and emotive psychology anchor design processes that positively impact peoples lives. Mike will also profile visionaries that are on the leading edge of experiential design throughout culture and commerce — from fashion, retail and lifestyle to the arts, entertainment and hospitality.

Leaders across the globe agree that a company’s Corporate Culture is truly its only permanent competitive advantage. Contracts expire, products become obsolete and client relationships shift. If you are truly looking to separate your company from the herd for the long term, you need to build a base to weather all storms. But what’s the “purpose” of Culture? What’s the point of going through the work required to establish it? After all, shouldn’t your people just be happy to have a job? Who Should Attend: Business Leaders, Owners and C-suite Executives looking for a clear, concise and most importantly actionable plan to solve the Engagement Enigma within their enterprise. Furthermore, Middle Management and Junior positions looking to elevate their engagement and hone their contribution to an organization’s culture. Why Attend: “Culture” and “Engagement” have become nebulous buzzwords that live up in the ether. We will pull them down from the clouds and construct a real set of tools that can be implemented immediately. How We’ll Do It: This highly interactive session draws from the latest breakthroughs in Behavioural Science, Molecular Biology, Leadership Coaching and Executive Recruitment, all distilled into a simple plan that can be built by drawing two straight lines.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 14 • 2:00PM–3:00PM • $45 • ROOM 218/219 W36 – THE BUILDINGS OF THE FUTURE ARE ZERO CARBON: HOW GREEN BUILDINGS CAN MEET CARBON EMISSIONS TARGETS PRESENTED BY [ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1.0 HSW-Sustainability Hour IDCEC Approved • AIBC 1 Core LU ] Canada has set ambitious targets for greenhouse gas emissions reduction which can only be met through concerted efforts in the building sector as one of the largest contributors to climate change. Over the last ten years, Canada has moved into a global leadership position through innovation and investment in LEED certified green buildings. As we move toward a carbon-constrained future, the conversation in building design and retrofit must shift from ‘energy efficiency’ to ‘carbon’ to ensure we arrive at the best solutions. The CaGBC’s new Zero Carbon Building Standard uses carbon as the key metric in assessing building performance and combines this measure with enhanced envelope performance and renewable energy options. To date 16 pilot projects representing different building types, sizes and locations have signed on to be the first projects to achieve zero carbon performance. Zero Carbon represents the next cycle of innovation in green building continuing Canada’s global leadership in taking tangible steps in reducing carbon emissions from buildings. An angry tenant calls and gives you or your staff a piece of his mind. A contentious strata council member starts shouting insults at the annual meeting. A client decides to blame you for changes in Provincial legislation. Sound familiar? Conflict is around us and we engage in it all day long. But there are ditches in the road of your job description that mark boundaries to what you should be subjected to! How can you harness these moments to address the real issues behind frustration, anger and misbehaviour? What skills can be applied to turn outbursts into opportunity? How can you avoid taking the bait, but transform discord into useful discourse? In this highly interactive session, we will scratch the surface of these fascinating questions.

There is positive momentum in both in the public and private sector, supported by a strong network of green builders and designers, to build sustainably. However, the key question always arises as to ‘what will it cost’ - the bottom line more often than not often takes precedence over social consciousness. This session will address the significance and the economics of Passive House design, knowledge gaps in costing key components/ considerations in Passive House design and how the business case is established by considering both initial capital costs and long term costs. In modern times, an abundance of artificial, uncontrolled light has led to a disconnect between people and the natural rhythm of the sun and arguably of the passing of time over the course of the day. A space with limited glazing is a vacuum and occupant perception of time, weather and seasons is challenged – is it mid-morning or night, summer or fall? The contrast between interior and exterior is jarring, integration with the natural world is lost.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been a buzzword in the AEC industry for years. Yet, the Canadian market as a whole has been slow to adopt it. A major selling point of BIM for construction has been conflict or clash detection on large projects, but there’s no doubt about it that BIM can offer so much more. For Turner Construction Company, BIM implementation is driven by the very specific needs of each individual project. This presentation will share examples of projects that Turner utilized virtual design from start to finish, expanding on the many benefits that BIM can offer. The speaker will discuss the innovative technologies that Turner is using to be better builders, including logistics coordination, 4D scheduling, 3D laser scans and 360 cameras. This session will summarize one construction company’s BIM journey from BIM-free to BIM as often as possible, on all stages of a project. Yet, the business case for deep energy retrofits is still hard to pencil in. If the new government is serious about decarbonizing the building stock by 2050, how would industry go about this? What investments are required? What innovative models could reduce costs? And what new business opportunities would that create? This presentation will build upon the conversation started at the 2017 Net Zero Buildings Thought Leader Forum. The growth in the number of adults 65 years and older is expected to double over the next 25 years. With such rapid growth, how do we design facilities that encompass the needs of an aging population? This hour-long presentation will focus on many of the challenges designers will face when specifying interior floor and wall finishes for senior living environments. We will explore the guidelines of the industry and explain their relevance to floors and walls, specifically the role of colour, the relevance of LRV values, the need for slip resistance in wet areas with special attention directed to the topic of transitions. We will dismiss the notion that one size fits all when it comes to specifying interior finishes. The diverse needs of senior living facilities require a myriad of solutions to create safe, warm, comfortable environments for residents and their caregivers. WEDNESDAY SESSIONS WEDNESDAY, FEB. 14 • 11:30AM–12:30PM • $45 • ROOM 216 W22 – INTELLIGENT DAYLIGHTING: DESIGN WITHOUT SACRIFICING PERFORMANCE [ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1.0 HSW-Sustainability Hour IDCEC Approved • AIBC 1 Core LU • 1 CPD BC Housing Recognized ] Daylighting elements and architectural roof glass are striking and desirable building features that historically come with costly challenges such as leaks, energy loss, thermal discomfort, and condensation issues. Next generation glazing is addressing these issues and developing roof glass elements, hidden daylighting features, and aesthetically-focused window systems designed to be thermal-bridge-free, and suitable for high performance envelope needs. Fenestration of all kinds requires special attention, but is especially important in high performance buildings, where they are fulfilling more occupant needs. Potential for thermal bridging, overheating, cold air convective currents and air or water leaks can dampen or destroy the gains of free daylight and visual comfort. The designer’s challenge is to meet both the aesthetic and performance demands of the building envelope. This seminar covers methodologies for selecting daylighting solutions, presents case studies and lays out design considerations that apply to commercial or residential, flat or pitched roof, curtain wall systems, historic preservation retrofits and more. The presentation will range across types of spaces one encounters in the modern office over the course of a work day, and proposes that feeling welcome, empowered, connected, calm and comfortable helps people to do their best work. Equally, companies JENNIFER BUSCH that seek to become skilled in leveraging the power of design, that use design to engage and inspire, often find workers a great deal more likely to exhibit creativity, commitment, and a spirit of community. Whatever the prevailing aesthetic model of design, and however complex the concerns and constraints that designers must address, we have a great opportunity to put beauty and meaning into the everyday work environment. We have a chance, and even a mandate, to improve people’s lives. That, in essence, is the story of design.
One in seven Canadian adults currently identify as having a disability affecting their mobility, vision, or hearing. This number is projected to increase to as high as one in five by 2036, due in part to our aging Boomer population. Whether disability is caused at birth, an accident or injury, an illness, or the natural effects of aging, anyone can be affected at any time. This means rethinking how we access and use our public buildings and spaces. Nearly nine-in-10 Canadians say a LEED-style program to rate building accessibility would be worthwhile [Angus Reid Institute, 2016]. When people of all abilities have greater access to the built environment in Canada, more people across our country can enjoy the full benefits of all the places where we live, work, and play. This presentation will introduce the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification program (RHFAC) and the opportunities for designers, owners and municipalities to benefit from an inclusive approach to developing the built environment. A purpose-built new home campus had to provide a similar degree of integration with the urban fabric. This ANA MARIA LLANOS landmark building on Great Northern Way anchors the regeneration of an industrial zone and serves as a catalyst for its redevelopment and connection with the city. The post-secondary institution had very clear ideas that the building should support a multitude of diverse program activity and anticipate future use of space. The architects conceived a dynamic spatial environment of visual connection, transparency and social interaction. Creating crossroads allowing for a vital exchange across artistic media that fuels collaboration. The design philosophy of the new Emily Carr campus is to create a canvas for creation, of making and remaking in an environment connected with the outdoors, that captures inspirational views of the skyline and that serves to enrich and engage student artists and the community at large. This presentation will discuss these philosophies and expand on the lessons learned from the outcome of this iconic educational build. Speaker: Ana Maria Llanos, Principal, Diamond Schmitt Architects

[ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1.0 HSW-Sustainability Hour IDCEC Approved • AIBC 1 Core LU ] SPONSORED BY There has been a recent increase in the number of new and existing building owners/operators who are considering how to reduce not just energy costs, but also greenhouse gas emissions from their facilities. Carbon metrics and targets will be increasingly important as we make the shift to a low-carbon economy, and buildings have an important role to play in this transformation. A strong business case — coupled with improved occupant well-being and broader social and environmental benefits — greatly increases the chance of making the shift successfully.
This presentation will explore business cases for carbon neutrality for buildings. Drawing on WSP’s experience helping both private clients and various levels of government develop frameworks for carbon neutrality at portfolio and site scales, we will outline a general framework for creating optimized plans for any facility, and review the steps to deliver them successfully. We will use several case studies to showcase the steps taken, differences between regions and sites across Canada, the path for carbon neutrality recommended and, ultimately, the business case. We will also discuss the differences in applying this framework to new versus existing facilities. Until several years ago, a typical wood-framed house, built under Part 9 of the BC Building Code and Vancouver Building Bylaw, mainly incorporated wooden structure, steep roofs, relatively small-sized punched windows, and wooden roof fascia board. This trend has started to change in recent years, especially in a wide range of custom-made houses in the lower mainland. Incorporating steel beams and columns within the exterior walls or penetrating through them, large flat roofs, big windows and curtain walls that span from floor to ceiling, and metal roof fascia boards, are among some of the features of these recently adopted contemporary house designs. The commonly incorporated Building Envelope design and construction practices, in many cases, are not the optimum approach for these contemporary houses. Experience has shown that in the absence of a holistic and tailored approach towards the Building Envelope design and construction of contemporary houses, there would be a risk of compromised thermal comfort of the occupants, condensation, energy loss, and moisture related damages. In other words, these contemporary houses, demand specific perspective and considerations when it comes to Building Envelope design/ construction. [ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1.0 General Hour IDCEC Approved • AIBC 1 Core LU • 2 CPD BC Housing Recognized ] Costs out of control on your project? Schedule delays affecting construction? New regulations adding complexity? There is a better way. The concept of Design-Build and Design Assist has been around since the ancient Romans, but is now more relevant than ever with changing mechanical technologies, regulations and costs. This seminar will educate users about the intersection of cost, design, and performance and how they can structure their projects to minimize risk and costs. We will be comparing the differences between bid/spec and designbuild mentality, explaining the great variability of mechanical systems, and also detailing how new regulations are enabling innovation. Recent Case Studies will be used to illustrate each of these points. As an industry in transition, it is increasingly difficult for builders to respond to the ongoing regulatory changes and growing expectations of home buyers around sustainable features. Municipalities must also respond to these changes, while progressing their own sustainability goals and managing the expectations of their constituents. The collision of these factors can at times create some unintended consequences that lead to builders building to an equivalency standard and municipalities unable to gauge those builds that have actually met the standard. In the end, all interested parties may be compromised-the homebuyer may not be purchasing a certified home; the builder may be risking their reputation by not certifying; and the municipality may not only be undermining their ability to meet their own sustainability targets, but also creating an uneven playing field whereby they’re giving a pass to those builders building to a program standard but not certifying, while other builders are pursuing third-party certification.

Sometimes the pressures of being a consultant can get very intense. Multiple clients, multiple deadlines, unreasonable people, project over-runs, lack of time, clients neglecting to pay, etc., etc. All these things don’t tend to help your general state of well-being. Before you say something you shouldn’t, throw your laptop through someone else’s window or pack up entirely and move to Mongolia (not that there’s anything wrong with Mongolia) there are a few strategies you might consider.
“Organizational health will one day surpass all other disciplines in business as the greatest opportunity for improvement and competitive advantage.” This is the promise of The Advantage; Patrick Lencioni’s bold manifesto about the most unexploited opportunity in modern business. Lencioni makes the case that there is no better way to achieve profound improvement in an organization than by attacking the root causes of dysfunction, politics, and confusion. Healthy organizations can execute, they love accountability, and are passionate about future success.
Over a 25 year consulting career, the presenter has dealt with just about every source of pressure at one time or another. The presentation will focus on a range of tried and tested strategies developed over the years to deal with all the main sources of stress. Providing first hand examples and numerous strategies and ideas for reducing blood pressure levels, an entertaining session is promised. There will be plenty of opportunity for audience participation and a draw for copies of the presenter’s book – “Consulting Made Easy”. This presentation is targeted at consultants but is applicable to anyone in a service role. Speaker: Adrian Partridge, President, ClearLead Consulting Limited

Planning ahead is the only way to improve conditions and protect the floor covering trade from a construction process that is all too often focused on deadlines before it is concerned with manufacturers’ installation guidelines. During this presentation, the presenter will discuss NFCA standards and the resources available for specification to help the entire construction team pre-plan and avoid the problems we know all too well. In addition, the speaker will discuss floor covering installation problems, subfloor flatness issues, moisture issues, testing requirements, NFCA standards and the active role floor covering associations can play in improving our industry.

However, an organization cannot be healthy if the people who lead it are incapable of modeling the very healthy behaviors expected of their employees. If leaders expect employees to behave in an effective, highly functional manner, then it starts with the leadership team. They must be able to inspire a vision, challenge processes, enable others to act, and create a culture of encouragement and celebration. Mastering the relationship side of leadership is critical, but not enough. Consistent performance requires the ability to replicate success, and this required process, standards, discipline, and the ability to execute. Leaders must be able to delegate effectively, and create a culture of accountability. Building a cohesive leadership team, developing organizational capability, and planning for succession are all critical steps for any organization focused on achieving an inspiring future state. This interactive presentation will provide insight, tips and process for ensuring you have the leadership behaviors, skills and the team you need in order to build a healthy organization that can execute and achieve your vision. MEDIA SPONSOR The BC Energy Step Code is a voluntary roadmap that establishes progressive performance targets (i.e., steps) that support market transformation from the current energy-efficiency requirements in the BC Building Code to net zero energy ready buildings. It establishes a set of incremental performance steps for new buildings that aims to communicate the future intent of the Building Code and improve consistency in building requirements across B.C. to transition to net zero energy ready buildings by 2032. It is a voluntary tool local governments across B.C. can use to encourage-or require-the construction of more energy-efficient buildings in their communities, and do so in a consistent, predictable way.
In this presentation the speakers will show how the new Step Code and similar outcome-based codes and regulations affect building design, presenting an energy engineering process that allows to efficiently design toward such regulations.
