Visas are mandatory for travel, study and work outside the EU unless otherwise specified by the respective authority. While each university suggests which visa to obtain, it is strongly recommended that one confirms the visa type with the relevant authority of the respective country as well as with the University. Lund University (Sweden) APPLICATION PERIOD For an elective in the spring semester (January – May) or summer semester (June – August), applications open October 1st- 15th. Applications for an elective in the autumn semester (September – December) open between April 1st – 15th.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Students must be in their final year of study or have completed the clinical module in the field to which they are applying.

ADMINISTRATIVE FEES EU citizens do not pay any tuition fees. The cost for a non-EU citizen is approximately 25,000 SEK (€2,461.97) for a 4-week clinical placement.

SPECIALTIES AVAILABLE Various clinical areas are available for electives; however, these are subject to change.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Swedish is the official language of the university hospitals; however, it is not a requirement for the elective. While patient interaction may be conducted in Swedish, assistance will be provided to aid communication. English will be used to communicate with department staff and supervisors. The Swedish Institute offers a free online course on the language, which might be good to go over before commencing your placement.

ACCOMMODATION Accommodation is not provided at Lund University. One can find hotels in Lund on the Visit Lund main page: https://visitlund.se/#

ELECTIVE DURATION The clinical placement begins on the first Monday of each month and lasts for 4 weeks. Please note that students will need to repeat the MRSA test one week prior to the placement.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Admitted students are placed in hospitals in Lund, Malmö, Helsingborg, Ystad and Kristianstad. Clinical rounds and case discussions are used to teach students along with two hours of theoretical studies every day. There are no lectures in this course. Students are assessed both in the clinical setting and through oral exams on logbook notes. The university’s health sciences education and research are carried out in collaboration with Skåne University Hospital, which has locations in both Lund and Malmö. Medical education takes place in Lund’s Biomedical Centre, which is located next to the hospital.

The university celebrates numerous achievements, from the construction of the world’s first apparatus for artificial respiration to the development of the first echocardiogram. University of Cambridge APPLICATION PERIOD Applications are open until all positions are filled. However, due to current restrictions, they are only accepting overseas students’ applications for placement blocks between 20th June to 2nd December.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Students must be in their final 18 months of medical school for the length of the placement they are applying for.

ADMINISTRATIVE FEES Students are required to cover an initial application fee, accommodation and administration fees, which total up to £1400 and are non-refundable.

SPECIALTIES AVAILABLE Each block offers different specialties. Students may list up to 5 placement preferences from the same block on their application.

ACCOMMODATION For Cambridge Elective students, the School of Clinical Medicine rents two four-bedroom flats on the Addenbrooke’s site. The lodging is given as part of the placement, and it is required of all students intending to undertake an Elective Placement to use the accommodation provided.

ELECTIVE DURATION The Elective Placements span 6 weeks and are held at the Cambridge University Teaching Hospitals NHS TrustAddenbrooke’s Hospital.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Every placement begins on a Monday and ends on a Friday. Students have the option of arriving the Friday evening before their placement begins. You will be given a welcome bundle with all the information you will need for your stay. Elective placements will differ greatly for each student and specialty. Most placements will entail working shifts in departments, shadowing staff members, and attending teaching sessions, amongst other activities. The entire program is geared to provide elective students the hands-on experience they need to advance their medical study.

UNIVERSITY TRIVIA The University of Cambridge was founded in 1209, making it the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s fourth-oldest surviving university. Medical teaching at the University of Cambridge can be traced back to 1540 when Dr John Blyth was endowed the University’s first Professorship of Physic by Henry VIII. Cambridge has been in the spotlight since the first direct measurement of blood pressure, as well as the unravelling of the complexity of DNA and the discovery of monoclonal antibodies. It is now one of the best University teaching hospitals in the UK, having an international reputation based soundly on treatment, teaching and research.

Newcastle University

APPLICATION PERIOD

Applications are currently open and elective placements will commence from February 2022.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Applications must be submitted at least 6 months in advance of the proposed start date of the elective. As part of the online application procedure, students are required to submit prepared papers (which include the Dean’s Stamp, Signature Form and Dean’s Letter) when filling out their application form. Applicants will be unable to finish the application process without uploading these papers.

ADMINISTRATIVE FEES Students are required to cover a non-refundable administrative fee of £200 which is payable at least 2 weeks prior to the elective commencement. An additional Occupational Health Fee will be charged, the amount of which will be determined on an individual basis based on circumstances.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Applicants must be well versed in the English language in order to benefit from an elective in the United Kingdom. Moreover, evidence of an English language qualification is required.

SPECIALTIES AVAILABLE There aren’t any lists of available specialties since each application is queried with individual supervisors as they come in.

ACCOMMODATION University visitors are offered accommodation from a duration of 14 nights. The booking/enquiry request can be made a minimum of 7 days prior to the first night’s stay. Student reservations are only accepted if there are vacancies which cannot be confirmed until 14 days before the scheduled arrival date.

ELECTIVE DURATION Electives must begin on a Monday and span a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8 weeks.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION At least two weeks prior to their arrival in the UK, all incoming students must present proof of completed COVID vaccination. Any exceptions must be discussed prior to the application. Upon completion of registration, students will get a registration pack which will provide them access to the Medical School Library and computer facilities. Students will also be notified if they are required to attend an Occupational Health Service appointment in Newcastle. Interaction with patients or ward visits will be prohibited without permission from Occupational Health. Additionally, students will receive a letter of authorisation to obtain their Trust ID badge which must be always worn in order to get access to the Trust’s clinical areas.

UNIVERSITY TRIVIA Newcastle University is a public research university based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northeast England. The university traces its origins to the School of Medicine and Surgery and the College of Physical Science which were founded in 1834 and 1871 respectively. It is one of ten Russell Group researchintensive universities to receive a Gold Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) rating. Newcastle University currently has one of the largest EU research portfolios in the UK.

Shiraz University of Medical Sciences

APPLICATION PERIOD Applications are open year-round however to minimise visa complications, candidates are urged to apply at least 6 to 8 months prior to the start of the placement.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Students are expected to have completed some clinical training before they can take an elective at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS), therefore the applicants must be in their final or penultimate year of study for their medical degree.

ADMINISTRATIVE FEES Students are required to cover a 625.00 USD tuition fee per four weeks and 75.00 USD health insurance per month.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Applicants provide evidence of an English language qualification. However, this criterion is waived for applicants who are native English speakers or who have completed a university program where English was the predominant medium of instruction. Those who are fluent in Persian are exceptions.

ACCOMMODATION SUMS offers lodging against a payment of 400 USD per month.

ELECTIVE DURATION A placement can span from 4 to 16 weeks.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Medical electives offer medical students an exclusive opportunity to learn about healthcare in an environment that is different from what they are used to, as well as the chance to strengthen their abilities by seeing and participating in a healthcare delivery system in another country. Working in an unconventional atmosphere will also encourage students to be more innovative and look for novel solutions to medical problems. Due to a large number of patients and situations, students may experience a variety of medical diseases that they would not see in their native country during the elective period.

UNIVERSITY TRIVIA SUMS is one of the country’s oldest medical schools, having been established in 1946. The University is in charge of all public hospitals, clinics and healthcare institutes in Fars Province in southern Iran, as well as training students in medical fields. Its practice is a mix of tradition and contemporary, with the goal of educating students through high-quality education and research. SUMS has been active as one of the largest and most reputable colleges in Iran and the Middle East, as well as a significant figure in the region, in terms of the services it provides to students and patients, since its inception.

American University of Beirut Medical Centre

APPLICATION PERIOD Candidates must apply 6-8 months prior to commencing their elective.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS The American University of Beirut Medical Centre (AUBMC) has declared no additional application requirements.

ADMINISTRATIVE FEES A clerkship fee of $50 will be collected once applicants have been accepted into a clerkship rotation.

ACCOMMODATION Accepted students will be responsible for their own room and boarding. They might be able to stay in the university’s student housing (but priority goes to AUB students). For any term longer than one week, students who wish to use the university housing facilities should have medical insurance coverage as an essential requirement. Students must contact the Office of Students Affairs at least 2 weeks prior to their arrival in Beirut.

ELECTIVE DURATION Electives can span between 4 to 8 weeks. If the clerkship of visiting students is shorter than 8 weeks, the Faculty of medicine does not charge a tuition fee. Nonetheless, students who intend to stay for more than 8 weeks must pay a tuition fee of US $3,000 for each four weeks they wish to stay.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION On the floors, visiting students must wear their own lab coats. Visiting students are welcome to engage in ongoing medical programs. Special programs cannot be created by the student or their sponsors to meet their specific needs. The Faculty of Medicine should not be held liable for participation in clerkship educational and training activities.

UNIVERSITY TRIVIA AUB is a private, non-sectarian, and independent university with a campus in Beirut, Lebanon, that was founded in New York. Throughout its history AUBMC has played a key role in caring for victims of regional and local conflicts. During World Wars I and II, the Lebanese Civil War, the Palestinian Conflict and the invasion of Iraq, it provided medical care to all the ill and injured. It has treated a number of Syrian refugees in Beirut’s Medical Centre, partner hospitals, and mobile clinics in recent years.

Begoro Government Hospital (Royal Triangle)

APPLICATION PERIOD It is possible to apply for a placement at any time of the year.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS The online application form requires all interested participants to explicitly declare their purpose and intentions.

ADMINISTRATIVE FEES Depending on the applicant’s selections, the total contribution per student for a 4-week elective (accommodation included) might be as low as $470. Students are required to cover an application processing fee of $50 through Paypal or $80 if the applicant opts to pay on arrival. Except for the application processing fee which applicants could decide to pay online, all other payments are to be made on arrival in Ghana. SPECIALTIES AVAILABLE Candidates who choose to work in a Teaching or Specialist Hospital are required to state their preferred specialty. Such an applicant would be assigned to the Special department of their choice and report to the in-charge specialist. Students on attachment at a District (rural) Hospital are required to rotate among all wards (Medical, Surgical, Maternity, Gynaecology, and Paediatric) if the length of the attachment permits. Everyone is encouraged to visit the emergency units, which include the labour ward and the casualty unit. Medical students and Doctors are also required to accompany surgeons to operating rooms, where they can study surgical cases and, in some situations, aid as second assistants.

ACCOMMODATION Participants are responsible for arranging their own lodging throughout the elective time. For students, Royal Triangle features pre-arranged economical shared housing. The houses utilised for this purpose are modestly furnished and supplied with other domestic household fittings to make life more comfortable for students.

ELECTIVE DURATION Electives can span between 2 to 4 weeks.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The Royal Triangle healthcare elective and internship program offers placement tailored to the needs of students/applicants interested in gaining work experience in a developing country like Ghana, West Africa. The Healthcare Elective and Internship program is designed to assist students and interns in honing their skills in resolving health issues with limited resources. Medical students, for example, would be required to use their clinical abilities to actively assist in the management of a wide range of health issues.

UNIVERSITY TRIVIA Royal Triangle was formed as a business entity in November 2008 and was legally registered under Ghanaian law on December 19, 2008. The Begoro District Hospital was founded in 2003 by the Ghanaian government with assistance from the Austrian government. Agogo Presbyterian Hospital APPLICATION PERIOD There were no specified registration periods, but openings are subjected to change according to accommodation availability.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS The Agogo Presbyterian Hospital has declared no additional application requirements.

ADMINISTRATIVE FEES Students are required to cover a €200 administration fee.

SPECIALTIES AVAILABLE The specialties offered are surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics/gynaecology, ophthalmology and dentistry.

ACCOMMODATION Agogo Presbyterian Hospital offers accommodation against a payment of €150 per month.

ELECTIVE DURATION No specific duration was specified. It depends on the student’s and the Institution’s schedule.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The team’s members are eager to teach and include the elective student in their activities. The hospital specialises in ophthalmology and River Blindness is a major problem in this area, due to the presence of the filaria fly following the construction of the Volta Dam.

UNIVERSITY TRIVIA The Agogo Presbyterian Hospital is Ghana’s oldest mission hospital. It has grown from humble beginnings to become the Ashanti Region’s second largest hospital and a referral centre for several other hospitals in the region. Patients come from all around Ghana, as well as the neighbouring countries of Burkina Faso, Togo, and Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast).

Global Medical Projects APPLICATION PERIOD Placements are available throughout the year.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Global Medical Projects has declared no additional application requirements for medical electives in Ghana.

ADMINISTRATIVE FEES Cost depends on the length of stay, ranging from €1,350 for 2 weeks to €1,995 for 6 weeks. Extra weeks cost €200, extra months cost €800 and the orphanage project costs €135. Part of the payment includes a donation to the hospitals for supporting the electives and Global Medical Projects. A visa is required for many of the destinations, Global Medical Projects have offered to provide applicants with the visas against an additional fee of £100 (€116).

SPECIALTIES AVAILABLE The majority of common specialties are available, but more advanced specialties may be limited to specific areas and hospitals. For this reason, applicants must specify any particular specialties they wish in their objective statement during the application process.

ACCOMMODATION During the placement, students will stay with either local families or in group accommodation. Pre-departure information will be provided with additional details on lodging and the elective. This will arrive approximately 4 weeks before the students’ departure.

ELECTIVE DURATION A placement can span from 2 to 6 weeks.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The hospitals serve as referral centres for the Central Region’s various regional health posts, district hospitals and small clinics. As a result, the conditions one will encounter will be different and interesting. Students will receive first-hand care for more common illnesses in Ghana, in addition to cases that have been referred to hospitals. Malaria, as well as other tropical illnesses like typhoid and hepatitis, will be the most common illness which will be encountered. Since Ghana lacks the same level of hygiene as developed countries, candidates will gain expertise treating intestinal parasites and dysentery. Working hours are typically 8am to 2pm, Monday to Friday, although this may vary depending on the department chosen.

UNIVERSITY TRIVIA Global Medical Projects specialises in finding valuable medical work experience assignments (abroad) for pre-university students, students on vacation, students on electives and certified medical personnel. They are a sister organisation to Global Volunteer Projects. Because the medical projects are more about work experience placements than volunteering, they were divided into their own brand.

APPLICATION PERIOD Applications are open after 2nd January 2022 in light of COVID19 restrictions. Electives are available all year, with the exception of the Winter Holiday break, which occurs between Christmas and New Year’s.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Students must be in their final or second-to-final year of undergraduate medical studies. All requests for visiting electives must be submitted through the AFMC Student Portal between 16 to 26 weeks prior to the start date of the requested elective.

ADMINISTRATIVE FEES Students are required to cover a non-refundable $350 administrative electives application fee.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Students must be able to communicate in English (reading, writing, speaking).

ACCOMMODATION In the St John’s area, there are no accommodation offers for visiting students. Students attending electives in St John’s area are responsible for booking and paying for their own lodging. Outside of the greater St John’s area, larger cities and rural hospitals occasionally provide free lodging. To get more information, the student should contact the hospital directly. Memorial University does not engage in these kinds of negotiations.

ELECTIVE DURATION Placements may span up to 8 weeks, with a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 4 weeks in each elective rotation. Some specialties only offer rotations of 2 weeks.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION All elective placements will be held from Mondays to Fridays. Visiting medical students are not permitted to observe or shadow at Memorial. For visiting students, Memorial does not provide core clinical rotations. For all rotations, students must wear a white lab coat and carry a stethoscope. Additionally, certain rotations may need students to bring additional medical instruments.

Mayo Clinic’s Visiting

Medical Student Clerkship APPLICATION PERIOD Applications open between December 1st – 30th for placements between April – June.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS §Application Requirements International applicants must have passed the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 and be in their final year of medical school. Moreover, candidates must have a satisfactory academic status in medical school and have received all of the requisite vaccinations. Students can only apply to one Mayo Clinic location. A total of four applications can be submitted by candidates. Applications submitted for the same department with, for example, four different date ranges will be counted as four separate registrations.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION As a visiting student at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, you’ll join a medical team that treats patients from all over the world with a variety of common and rare diseases. As a team member, you will engage in teaching rounds and conferences with eminent scientists in basic research and exceptional physicians representing all medical and surgical specialties. After completing a clerkship, your medical school will receive an electronic performance review. For this reason, you must provide a complete email address.

UNIVERSITY TRIVIA Mayo clinic is a non-profit American academical medical centre focused on incorporating health care, education and research. It now includes major campuses in Arizona and Florida, in addition to its Rochester facility. Mayo clinic continues to be at the forefront of medical innovation, running hundreds of clinical trials, and providing ground-breaking treatments like CAR-T and proton therapy. They are one of the main research centres for the COVID-19 outbreak and were one of the first to offer plasma exchange to its patient population.
