Jake Bowe BMX Champion Jake Bowe, school vice captain at Gordonvale State High School returns to Cairns after placing 6th in the Australian National BMX series. It has been an interesting year thus far for local athlete Jake, as he has just competed in the 7th and final round of Australian National BMX series. As other teens relaxed on their school holidays, Jake Bowe utilized this time to begin training for round one and two of the championships which had place on the 1st and 2nd of January. This required Jake to take a trip down to the Gold Coast. Missing out on the finals of round 1, Jake managed to place 2nd in round two, securing himself a 4th position in the series. Round three and four of the series took place here in Cairns. This gave Jake home track advantage as he had raced on the local track numerous times. Jake finished Round 3 in 5th place, however during Round 4’s second heat Jakes bike frame snapped causing him to borrow another rider’s bike to complete the 4th Round. Jake stated “I was lucky to have someone lend me their bike, otherwise I would have been unable to compete Round 4, this would have caused me to drop out of the top 8 in the national series”. Following this Jake ventured to Shepparton, Victoria to participate in the 5th and 6th Rounds, unfortunately for Jake he was feeling ill thus underperforming in his races. This resulted in him being unable to compete in any of the rounds finals. Round 7 was held in Bathurst New South Wales, along with the Australian BMX titles. Jake confidently earned his way into the finals where he placed 6th which then gave him an overall finish in the national series for the year. In a final statement Jake said that “as a first year junior I have learnt and experienced many things to now improve on and hopefully performed better at the states titles down in Brisbane later this year”. If you are interested in following Jake’s journey, you may find him on his Facebook athlete page, or by following his Instagram account. Written by Hayden, Year 12 Student

Demi Bettini from Mirriwinni was diagnosed with and aggressive bone cancer in her right femur in September 2014. Unfortunately at the end of February Demi and her family received news that the cancer has returned in her lungs and the Doctors cannot operate and chemo not will cure her. However Demi and her family are by no means giving up and are researching other possibilities including natural therapies. Support in local tragedy aftermath We at the Mulgrave News like to stay out of anything political or sensitive as we pride ourselves on being a newspaper magazine trying to bring positive stories about our community. However it would be remiss of us not to mention the recent tragedy that occurred in Wiltshire Drive in March. We would just like to express our sympathy to the families of those involved. We would also like to send out thanks out to the neighbours, community members and of course emergency services members that attended on the day. The event has affected the whole community in one way or another and it is important that we talk about those feelings and especially to the

Improved facilities for boaties The very popular Redbank and Bellenden Ker boat ramps will be upgraded thanks to the Palaszczuk Government’s $30 million boost to the Marine Infrastructure fund. Tr e a s u r e r a n d M e m b e r f o r Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said he was thrilled to announce Ports Minister Mark Bailey had listed the Redbank and Bellenden Ker boat ramps in the Government’s 2016-17 program of works. “If you can’t catch it in Far North Queensland, it’s probably not worth catching,” Mr Pitt said. “Getting these boat ramps upgraded has long been a priority for me, having heard the feedback from local boaties that access to the water is very difficult in low waters when the tide goes out. The Redbank boat ramp will be widened to four lanes and a floating walkway will be installed. At Bellenden Kerr, local boaties will benefit through a widening of the existing facility. These works will improve safety and accessibility by allowing for faster and improved boat launching and retrieval operations and better access. The popularity of recreational boating and fishing in the Far North is continually increasing so it’s important to provide facilities that will meet this demand. In fact one in every 19 Queenslanders now owns a boat.” “Under this program of works we’ll see new boat ramps, pontoons and floating walkways constructed right around Queensland so locals can enjoy our stunning creeks, rivers and waterways,” Mr Pitt said. “These works will support hundreds of marine and civil contracting jobs across Queensland. The Palaszczuk Government is committed to seeing Queensland waterways have great facilities for locals to regularly use, as well as providing a boost for local tourism. Recently we launched an online survey for community feedback and I encourage locals to provide their insights as to the Far Northern boating infrastructure most in need of improvements.”

A Good Day for Footy? No, A Great Day! Power Park in Gordonvale, Far North Queensland, always reverberates to the sounds of kids squealing, shouting and laughing whenever training or matches are taking place. Being one of the most picturesque football grounds in Australia with Walsh’s Pyramid towering behind the southern goal posts, watching over the town like some benevolent parent, it’s as if the kids are trying to impress and the majestic “mountain” smiles down on their happiness. That’s on a normal day. But when, as happened last Sunday, you add in a legend of AFL football, Adam Goodes, those squeals of delight find a higher octave – a louder and more raucous level of happiness, fun and joy. Adam Goodes needs little, if any, introduction to football followers. Even non-followers are aware of his stature in the game, and in the pantheon of Australian sporting legends. A dual Brownlow Medallist (the AFL’s highest individual honour), dual Sydney Swans premiership player, Indigenous Team Of The Century player and 2014 Australian Of The Year, Goodes boasts an incredible array of achievements. Beyond the football field, Goodes has also been a tremendous role model to footballers everywhere, most particularly amongst indigenous kids. His visit to the Pyramid Power football club in Gordonvale was part of a joint Toyota/AFL promotion, with the club being the recipients of an inspirational prize. A club which began in 2005 and boasts an indigenous player base in excess of 90%, Pyramid Power could have no better visitor to inspire the kids and bring together the community it serves. When his clinics began (immediately after a match between Pyramid Power Under 15’s and the other mainly indigenous club The Eagles which went Power’s way by a solitary point) a herd of kids ran to the northern goals to be with their hero as Goodes led kicking drills. When it was time to move to the centre of the field for the next set of drills, the herd followed and swelled further. Goodes’ magnetism was electric as kids went where their hero went. Goodes was a veritable “pied piper” and the kids responded accordingly.

Photo: Sam Davis (Northern Beaches News)

Goodes spared nothing. He chatted to kids and adults alike, posed for the ubiquitous “selfies”, commented on the footy match prior, calling it exciting to watch, remarked at the beauty of the location and even kicked a few extra footies around for the kids (or adults) who wanted more. Adam Goodes seemed to enjoy himself at Power Park, Gordonvale, and will leave with some happy memories. But local footy, and particularly Pyramid Power and the Gordonvale district, left with both a tremendous boost for the game and a glowing endorsement for what has been achieved locally in AFL by one of the greatest players to ever pull on a footy boot. Perhaps the greatest legacy, however, is that an indigenous leader and role model took a club’s indigenous kids under his wing for a day and validated everything they have achieved and love. This wasn’t just a good day for footy in Gordonvale. It was a great day.

Portia Eden is #1 again! Portia Eden, Gordonvale’s BMX champion has just returned from the Australian National titles held in Bathurst NSW and after a long week of riding has once again come home as number 1 in the 9 year old girls. It has been a big year for Portia kicking off with winning the young athlete of the year at the Cairns Australia day awards and then heading off to Bathurst for the Australian Titles. However there is no rest for Portia as the world titles have been bought forward due to Rio Olympics’ and she will be heading off to Colombia in 8 weeks. Portia is back training 6 days a week, and is very excited about the upcoming competition. Portia has put in a lot of extra work in this year to hopefully come back with allusive world #1 for Gordonvale.

The Origins of Gordonvale Turf Club (Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) One of the earliest reports of horse racing in the Mulgrave area is from the ‘Morning Post’ of 28th March 1888, when the Alley family of Riverstone held a sports meeting on the Queens Birthday – a program of good prizes for hack races etc. At Edmonton, a newly formed Jockey Club held a meeting at Fretwell Hotel in March 1888. Their subscriptions and contributions amounted to 77 pounds and it was proposed to apply to the Minister for Lands for a racecourse at Skeleton Creek and for the club to be duly registered. Almost a decade later the first annual general meeting of the Mulgrave Jockey Club was held at Pryn’s Hotel on October 3rd 1897. After a year, the operation of the club was in a fairly good financial position with a balance of 199 pounds. The Club had its own 8 furlong course behind the Family Hotel near Sue’s farm, but it was still quite basic and many improvements yet had to be done, so races were often held with the Cairns Club. A set of scales on display at the Mulgrave Settlers’ Museum is reported to have been used to weigh jockeys. The scales came form a general store operated by Mr & Mrs Jas O’Neill, who also ran the Family Hotel next door. Visitors came by tram and road and from far and wide to the Mulgrave racecourse. Some meetings saw between 300 to 400 spectators, but due to the suppressed financial times only amounted to 300 pounds being collected on the day.

Works for the committee continued in providing a jockey room, a securely fenced-in weighing room, a railed-in space for the press and properly built outhouses. At a meeting held at the Hides Hotel in Cairns in September 1900, it was proposed that the Mulgrave Jockey Club change its name to the Cairns-Mulgrave Jockey Club, but it wasn’t until 1902 that the motion was finally carried and the name was changed. Then in 1914 the name was changed again to Mulgrave Turf Club and a membership fee of one guinea would admit one gentleman and two ladies. The Mulgrave Turf Club held its first meeting on their new 7 furlong and 3 chain (1468.5m) racecourse in Gordonvale on Saturday 19th December 1914. The horses were all local and included names such as Topman, Rayah, Golden Grain & Rhymertic. Works continued on improving the track and in 1916 they held six race meetings with prizes totalling 359 pounds.

The dance was originally going to be held on the unroofed floor of the Nelson Hall, but owing to weather it was held at the Federal Theatre. Almost 8 years since the inception of the Club, the members had cleared 40 acres of swamp, drained it, developed a pleasant reserve and boasted a course to rival any north of Brisbane. Working bees and gatherings were put together by the womenfolk catering for their men who on one occasion, spread 17 loads of sand on the track and erected a Judge’s box and Stewards Stands. ...To Be Continued.

Page 3 Sudoku Solution

Mr John Gordon presented the Club with a silver cup, held for future presentation and Mrs O’Neill donated 12 saddle cloths. By 1917, the Club’s committee comprised of Patron John Gordon, President M. Carpenter, Vice Presidents J. Cannon, J. McAloon, J. Browne and A. McNab, Treasurer was W. Irvin and Secretary G. Hesp. As the years went by the committee was always looking at ways to improve the track with sand, concrete pipes and drainage and to make improvements to buildings. In 1920 a cyclone had battered the track and the course had been flooded. A social dance was held to raise funds to rebuild the grandstand.

Robyn’s Real Estate Read Welcome to this month's Editorial of all things Real Estate. There has been a continued change in the local real estate market over the last 2 months with a cooling in buyer enquiries and inspections, yet the Cairns area is still regarded to be in a "Rising Market", based on research done by Herron Todd White. Whilst Cairns Property Office sales are steady month in month out, buyers both locally and interstate are looking for value for money in the current market and quite ready to purchase based on this simple equation. Building approvals growth, whilst having tapered off significantly over the last 12 months, show much steadier levels of activity as we move towards our typically busier property marketing winter selling period. There is great news for Investors or people who are buying rental properties short term with a view to move in within 6 to 12 months in that the rental vacancy conditions overall continue to demonstrate a moderately tight rental supply. The trend rental vacancy rates for January 2016 stood at 2.3% for houses and 2.8% for units meaning that rental properties are still in high demand with good returns possible.
