56th Annual Great Pyramid Race Program of Events 8:00am

Here we go again. Saturday August 8th sees the running of the 56th Annual Great Pyramid Race from Norman Park in Gordonvale to the top of the Pyramid. Local legend has it that two Gordonvale cane farmers, quenching their thirst at the local pub, decided to settle an argument with a race to the peak of the nearby Walsh’s Pyramid. This was no ordinary race. A wager was made between the two to see who could run the race in the quickest possible time and it created so much interest that a local bookie took bets on the outcome. From this unlikely start has evolved “The Great Pyramid Race”.

The first official race was organised in 1959 to coincide with Queensland’s Centenary Celebrations and it has become an annual event where some of the finest and fittest present themselves and strive to conquer this formidable mountain in unbelievable record times and often described as, “A never-ending uphill scramble and a ‘controlled’ downhill free fall.” The feature event, the 12 kilometre race commences at 2pm where runners will do a lap of Norman Park before heading to the Bruce Highway via Greenpatch then to the foot of the Pyramid a total of 3 kilomtetres before commencing the steep 3 kilometre run to the top of the pyramid which sits 922m above sea level. The runners turn around at the top before commencing the decent down and back to Norman Park. Currently the record sits at 1 hr 15 minutes and 34 seconds set in 1997 by Sunshine Coast runner Neil Labinsky. The womens record was set by Anita Appleby the same year in a time of 1 hr 32 minutes and 6 seconds. The event and the supporting markets, entertainment and music, cultural and craft events, children’s activities and rides and amusements have become the foremost community event for Gordonvale and surrounding areas, growing every year since its inception in 1959. Festival activities include the main event, The Great

Reach Out for Ravenshoe Robyn’s Bowen Therapy On The of 15th July 2015, Cheryl Campbell of Gordonvale proudly handed over a cheque for $21,600 to the president of the Ravenshoe Chamber of Commerce Bert Wilson to assist the victims of the explosion that ripped through Serves your right Café in Ravenshoe on June 9th this year. People from right across Australia and in fact the world were horrified when on that day a vehicle left the road and crashed through the side wall of the Serves You Right Café, hitting a number of gas bottles and causing a massive explosion. 20 people were taken to hospital and two people have since died with a number still in a very serious condition in a number of hospitals around the region. Amongst the injured were two local firefighters, Joe Torrisi and Michael Beck who were in the café at the time of the incident. Over $400,000 has so far been raised from around the nation and donations are still flooding to help heal the scares of the terrible event. The cent sale was a resounding success with the target figure of $20,000 easily catered for. All prizes and the afternoon teas were donated from local businesses. Local community members assisted with the running of the event including a number of first year constables pitching in to help the cause. Gordonvale has often assisted other small communities in their time of need including raising funds for the victims of the Gratham

Lacking energy? Has your get up and go, gone? Many issues may contribute to you feeling this way. Lack of sleep, not eating well, stressed, some digestive issues, tight muscles or your lymphatic system may be congested. A Bowen and Emmett treatment may be just what your body needs. Relaxing your muscles and balancing your body can be the start to the new you. When your body is in alignment and relaxed everything works more efficiently. Unblocking your lymphatic system also releases toxins and they are then eliminated. Enjoy life more and get your energy back! PLEASE NOTE: Robyn will be away for 2 weeks from 14th -28th AUGUST. Mr Pitt said since its inception in 2010 the ride has raised more than $25,000 for SANDS Queensland. “Kerry and I vowed to do whatever we could to raise funds for SANDS, which provides much-needed counselling and support services for families and those affected by the sudden death of an infant or through reproductive loss. “Bereaved parents often find the need to talk to someone who has had an experience similar to their own. SANDS offers 24-hour support services via telephone and email as well as regular

support meetings. “All the proceeds from the Ride for Isabel will go to SANDS Queensland and will support counselling and bereavement services, as well as events like the ‘Walk to Remember’ right here in Cairns.”

Gordonvale & Freshwater State Schools Taste Of AFL Last Saturday our Gordonvale State School girl’s AFL team went to Cazalys Stadium in Cairns to play in the half time Auskick match against Freshwater State School. The girls on both teams did a fantastic job, with Freshwater winning the game by 2 points. Our girls were just grateful and honoured to be able to play in front of a huge audience of 10 000 footy fans. One of our girls said that she was “scared at first, but when I started playing it was like no one was there!” Some of the girls said that for those 15 minutes they felt “famous” and can’t wait to do it again.

When we ran off the field after the game the crowds were cheering and applauding us and even though we lost the game it was still the most fun we have ever had. We wanted to thank our great coach, Mr Hull, and our fantastic team photographer, Ms Kate as well as our goal umpire Mr Bradley. We would also like to thank the AFL in Cairns for giving our girls the chance to be a part of something so special at an actual AFL match between the Gold Coast Suns and the Western Bulldogs.

Litter Legends Gordonvale State School students participating in the ‘Excelsior : A Whole Community Approach to Sustainability’ Program have identified two litter hotspots in the town area. After a litter clean up, Kayla Elliot and Keira Ericson recorded the amount and type of litter collected. Analysis of the litter collected will help in determining effective strategies to address this issue. The baseline data will be useful in evaluating the success of these strategies implemented. The data collected will be provided to Tangaroa Blue, a not-for- profit organisation that co-ordinates the Australian Marine Debris Initiative, an on-ground network of volunteers, communities and agencies around the country monitoring the impacts of marine debris along their stretch of the coastline. The expected outcome is to have reduced litter in the town area resulting in a cleaner, more beautiful Gordonvale. If local businesses or organisations would like to advise or have input, please contact Sandra Charlton (teacher, Gordonvale State School) via emailschar21@eq.edu.au and she will pass on the information to the students.

The Building of Gordonvale Memorable Hospital (Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) Gordonvale Memorable Hospital would not have been built if it were not for a small group of concerned community citizens. Spear heading the idea of a community hospital, were James and Edith O’Neill who were tireless volunteers for the Gordonvale district. They had lost two of their own sons in the First World War. The original intention was to honour those who died as well as those who returned, as gratitude from the people of the Gordonvale district. Their wish was shared by many in Gordonvale who grieved their own and their country’s loss. The fundraising for the hospital started prior to 1920, but it wasn’t until the 14th October 1920, before a meeting was held in the Nelson Hall Gordonvale for the purpose of establishing a cottage hospital. A ladies committee was formed and they all became the backbone of a willing and energetic group with a common goal. It was then that the fundraising began in earnest, with the committee holding fetes, dances, fancy dress balls, concerts and sporting days. Over five years the ladies had raised two thousand pounds, which equates to $160, 000 dollars in today’s money. Proposals were put forward to the Home Secretary and the Government of the day had promised financial support however, the government considered Cairns hospital to be close enough to deal with any patients. This did not deter the ladies at all and they carried on their efforts at the same pace. By 1924 the fundraising had ramped up to the point where the ladies needed help from the menfolk for the planning of construction. A gentlemen’s Working Committee was formed. The ladies wrote again to the Home Secretary submitting their plan for initially a 12 bed hospital, but then increasing their plans to accommodate a 30 bed hospital incorporating a maternity ward and separate first aid building. The government compensated by approving an “ 8 bed plus Verandah hospital”, one bed maternity ward, a First Aid section, the Nurse’s quarters and a kitchen, a total of 3 buildings. There was no subsidy for furniture, surgical equipment, some of the lighting or fencing. Beds were donated by residents of Gordonvale.

On 3rd June 1926, with the building completion in sight, it was decided after a meeting to turn the running of the hospital over to the Cairns Hospital Board. On the 9th August 1926, his Excellency, Lord Stonehaven, walked between two ranks of returned soldiers to unveil two newly erected concrete gate posts that contained memorial tablets marked ‘Gordonvale Memorial Hospital’. The hospital started admitting patients by October of that year. A separate union of women got together while the hospital was under construction. They formed the Gordonvale Soldiers Memorial Hospital Sewing Guild. This committee sewed to raise funds for all the extras that weren’t supplied to the Nurse’s quarters or hospital. With these funds they purchased furniture, chair covers, ice boxes, and blinds to keep the sun off the ice boxes, linen, irons, scales and other luxuries. A plaque was unveiled by the then Governor-General, John Baird and displayed at the front gate of the hospital. The plaque was misplaced over time. It was not until the present day Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service Chairman Bob Norman, found the plaque wedged behind a filing cabinet, that the hospitals true history has been revived. Today (2015), Gordonvale Hospital is a 12 bed Palliative Care in patient facility.

SOLUTION Robyn’s Real Estate Read Welcome to this month's Editorial of all things Real Estate. Cairns Property Office held a booth at the recent Cairns Show and we had a fantastic response from people seeking more information on how to obtain the best price for their property. Funding for Alley Park master plan 29 July, 2015 Stage 1 of Gordonvale’s Alley Park Sporting Precinct master plan will commence this financial year, with Cairns Regional Council allocating $800,000 in its 20152016 Budget. The precinct currently caters for junior and senior rugby league, touch football and the Gordonvale Turf and Golf Clubs and was the subject of a master plan adopted by Council in 2007. The plan was revised last year to feature: • more opportunities for unstructured recreation for locals • better integration with the local school to encourage shared use and other opportunities • improved traffic and parking arrangements to alleviate local congestion • consolidation of club buildings to achieve more efficient use of space and reduce maintenance and operating costs to lessees; and • the relocation of court based sporting facilities (in the longer term) such as basketball, netball and tennis to maximise management options.

Animal Education Day Saturday the 19th of September will see the inaugural Animal education day to be held at Norman Park In Gordonvale. The project was the brain child of Nicola Millen who is no stranger to organizing events around the town of Gordonvale. The event is in its early stages of planning however organistaions such as YAPS, RSPCA and AMRRIC have expressed their interest to be part of the day. There will also be a petting zoo and demonstrations from the Queensland Police dog squad. The Cairns regional council will also provide information on animal management. The organisers are keen to hear from any other community group or small business that would be interested in contributing to this event. Although the focus will be in the animals, the day will also have food stalls, face painting and entertainnment from local groups. Anyone interested is asked to contact Nicky MILLEN on 0423499967 or email nicolamillen@yahoo.com Division 1 Councillor Steve Brain said the master plan would be rolled out in a staged approach, with Stage 1 to be delivered over the next two years at an estimated cost of $1.55 million. “In this year’s Budget, Council has allocated $800,000 in this year’s Budget which will fund two additional fields to cater for junior and senior rugby league in what is the first stage of the park’s expansion,” he said. The works will include the new rectangular fields and associated drainage and irrigation as well as upgrades to shared amenities with any remaining funds. In future years, netball courts, rectangular and oval fields, and parking will be added under the master plan staging program. “I am so pleased that Council has begun to action this master plan which was completed in 2007 – it’s high time this precinct was improved to provide quality sporting facilities to the Gordonvale area which continues to grow in population, especially attracting young families,” Cr Brain said. Construction of the additional fields is expected to start early next year and be completed at the end of 2016.
