Remembrance Day Christmas Residents, students and dignitaries flocked to the cenotaph in Norman Park opposite the Gordonvale RSL on November the 11th to commemorate Remembrance Day.

About 100 people attended and observed a minutes silence and heard speeches from Cr Steve Brain and other community members and representatives for government organisations.

The evening kicks off at 5pm with markets, followed by Carols in the Park presented by some of Gordonvales’ fantastic local talent. Carols will be from 6.30pm until 8.30pm before Santa arrives at the park with sweets for the children.

Gordonvale Traders will once again be celebrating Christmas and residents are invited to come down to Norman Park on the 19th of December to help celebrate.

There will also be cash prize draws throughout the evening. The first prize will be $500 plus and extra $500 if you are present at the draw. There will also be five $100 draws as well as five $150 hampers to be given away during the night.

A moving rendition of the last post was then played to the audience along with the national anthem. Residents from community organisations then laid a number of wreaths at the bottom of the cenotaph.

The hampers will have Ham, Beer, Wine and a Christmas Dairy pack as well as other goodies. All cash winners must be present for the draw to accept their prize.

It was great to see so many school children attend so that the message and tradition can be passed on to our next generation.

The major sponsor of the event this year is Cornetts IGA with most other traders throughout Gordonvale supporting the event. Thanks to all the Gordonvale traders who make this event possible year in and year out. It shows what great things a small town can do.

Eliminiate Dengue Update

CALTEX COMMUNITY CALENDAR

Almost three years have passed since we released Wolbachia mosquitoes in Gordonvale as part of the Eliminate Dengue research program’s first field trial.

Since then, we have demonstrated we can establish Wolbachia in mosquito populations. We are still monitoring mosquitoes in Gordonvale, and our results show over 90% of Aedesaegypti mosquitoes carry Wolbachia.

Wolbachiaare bacteria that naturally occur in many insects. When mosquitoes carry Wolbachia it reduces the mosquito’s ability to transmit dengue. When we release Wolbachia mosquitoes they breed with other mosquitoes, passing Wolbachia to subsequent generations. In this way, we were able to spread Wolbachia into mosquito populations.

This year we released Wolbachia mosquitoes in more areas of Cairns – with promising results – and our research program is continuing to expand overseas.

With the wet season bringing higher mosquito numbers, it is important to protect yourself from mosquito bites. While we expect fewer people to get dengue within Gordonvale, the Wolbachia method may not prevent all transmission and you will still be able to catch dengue elsewhere.

Gordonvale’s Roving Reporter Heidi Berry, a Year 4 student from Gordonvale State School was awarded the Junior Reporter of the Year Award at the 2013 Newspapers in Education Awards Ceremony.

This event was conducted by The Cairns Post to celebrate the outstanding achievements of young up and coming journalists from all over North Queensland for their contributions to Post-Ed in The Cairns Post.

As a result of this award, Heidi will be given an opportunity to be the roving reporter at the Cairns Show next year.

The Newspapers in Education Co-ordinator, Mr Chris Ellis commented that “Heidi’s contributions to Post-Ed have been consistently outstanding.”

A Premier Year for AFL Footy in Gordonvale Bringing to life the memories of the Aloomba-Gordonvale teams of the late 50’s and early sixties, the Centrals Aloomba club which enjoyed success into the late 70’s, and the Babinda Magpies and the legacy of Howard Kennedy and the many others who worked so hard to bring Australian Rules football to the region, Pyramid Power and Gordonvale State School have enjoyed a wonderful 2013.

Due to the hard work of Matthew Allen and Wesley Hull, and the fanatical, Hawthorn inspired support of past principal Bruce Houghton, Gordonvale State School has enjoyed a stellar year.

The boys’ team reached the quarter-finals of the Gold Coast Suns Cup. The girls’ team then went on to win the same event for girls and went on to play the winner of the corresponding carnival in Townsville at Tony Ireland Stadium. They lost narrowly, but proved themselves the toast of the north. The school went on to win the Rivalry Cup against other schools in the southern corridor of Cairns, and the girls triumphed again in the annual Women In AFL match against Freshwater State School.

The tremendous growth and performance in school football has now begun to be mirrored in the performances of the Pyramid Power club, based here in Gordonvale. Tapping into the local youth, as well as Yarrabah, Djarragun College and kids from as far south as Babinda and west to Ravenshoe, Pyramid Power won two premierships this year in both the Under 14 and Under 16 competitions, whilst the Under 11 team were runners up in their first year.

Overall, the Gordonvale AFL scene is on the rise both in terms of local interest and performance. Howard Kennedy and the many people who first developed the game within the district would be both pleased and proud.

Local Scientist Honoured Sue Helmke's work in the area of environmental sustainability was recently recognised by the Hon. Virginia Chadwick Memorial Foundation.

Sue, one of Gordonvale State School's parents, was awarded the prestigious 2013 ‘Outstanding Environmental Leader’ Award for her work in sustainability education over the past 5 years.

State School. Curtis Pitt MP, Member for Mulgrave, said “Sue's passion for science and environmental sustainability has been a motivating force for the students.

This award recognises a member of the school community in a Reef Guardian School for outstanding achievements in improving the sustainability of their environment and local area.

“She has all the qualities of a great teacher, she motivates, guides, encourages and excites students to achieve the goals of their sustainability projects. We need more people like Sue bringing their expertise to schools which benefits both students and staff and ultimately the whole community.”

Sue is a Senior Fisheries Biologist with Fisheries Queensland who draws upon her science background to assist students in developing a range of environmental projects that have significant outcomes within Gordonvale State School and the community. Sue is also a CSIRO ‘Scientist in Schools’ representative and assists classes with their science lessons at Gordonvale

Sue’s response when presented with the award was “I feel honoured to receive this award. It’s easy for me to be passionate and enthusiastic when working with the students and staff at Gordonvale State School. They all show so much enthusiasm that being part of this program is enjoyable. The fact that I can inspire, encourage and mentor others means so much to me.”

Mobile Breast Screen Service 1 in 8 women will be affected by breast cancer before the age of 85.

A statistic most of us will be affected by in some way during our lives.

The two biggest risk factors for breast cancer include being a woman and getting older – two things that are completely out of our control.

The BreastScreen Queensland Gordonvale Mobile Service will be located at Gordonvale Hospital Highleigh Road, from the 2nd – 12th of December 2014. If you would like to book a free breast screen with BreastScreen Queensland please call 13 20 50.

What is in our control are the 5 Steps we can take to reduce our risk and find breast cancer early!

BreastScreen Queensland is a FREE breast cancer screening program.

A breast screen is able to pick up changes in the breast tissue the size of a pink prick, often before these can be seen or felt. Women aged 40 years and over are eligible for this FREE service, with the average age of first diagnosis being 60.

It is also important to be breast aware, that is to get to know the normal look and feel of your own breasts and if you notice changes speak to your doctor.

Daily exercise, limiting or avoiding alcohol and making healthy food choices also play a significant role in the prevention of breast cancer.

These protective factors also reduce our risk of other chronic diseases such as bowel cancer, coronary heart disease and diabetes.

The History of Gordonvale’s Water Supply (Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) In the early days of the settlement of Gordonvale, household water supply was from rainwater from the roof, stored in galvanised iron tanks or underground water from bores or wells.

By 1928 Gordonvale had grown and needed a reliable water supply. Two options were proposed; Wrights Creek using gravity at an estimated cost of 19,600 pounds or pump from the Mulgrave River into an elevated concrete tank, (water tank in Norman Park) 100 feet above ground level.

This cheaper alternative option of 14,000 pounds was chosen. The tank needed to be of this height to obtain sufficient pressure to be able to fight fires with mains pressure.

Plans were finalized and work was started on the installation of pumps and electric motors. Electricity was supplied to Gordonvale from the Barron Falls Hydro Scheme in 1933.

The tower site in the corner of Norman Park was approved. It was noted in the council minutes that the cost of the tower would be 1,400 pounds.

There were some problems with the laid pipes weeping and the council obtained a further loan to connect mains to premises. Soon after, it was found that both the natural ground water and that pumped from the river had an acid reaction, which was neutralised by the water leaching the lime out of the cement.

The quality of the water was unacceptable and the concrete pipes were

continually breaking, so council replaced the concrete pipes with cast iron pipes. In 1947 the cast iron pipes became polluted with iron bacteria called Crenothryx, which was thought to have come from railway rails buried in the sand bed near the suction pump. Crenothryx is an orange coloured jelly like substance which grew in the dark and the cast iron pipe proved to be a perfect feeding ground.

It appeared in strings up to 20cm long and was discharged through taps and collected in cisterns. This was overcome with large doses of chlorine and heavy flushing, which was only partially successful in discharging all the bacteria.

By 1952, the Cairns Mulgrave Water Supply Board had taken control of the Behana Creek scheme. Since then many improvements have been made and water can be transferred from any part of the scheme to needy areas.

The water tower in Norman Park has been made redundant and the upper sections are in the process of being demolished. Cairns Regional Council has decided to retain the octagonal base of the tower and the lowest section of the eight supporting columns.

A shadow of the former tower will be stencilled into the concrete paving and interpretive displays will be placed surrounding the base depicting the history of the tower.

Mulgrave Settlers Museum will close for the year on Saturday 14th December and re-open in late January 2014. Merry Christmas!

My name is Jaydrian Mamarika

As I mentioned last month, the lead up to Christmas is very busy and I am happy to see this to be true with lots of great new listings for buyers and investors to choose from and multiple offers on most of my current properties.

I was born on Groote Eylandt, Northern Territory in 1998. Presently I am 15 years old. My community is Angurugu and my first language is Anindilyakwa. From grade 1-7 I attended Angurugu on Groote Eyland. Later I was a border at Saint Teresa’s Catholic College, Abergowrie from grade 8 to 9. I transferred to Djarragun College this year to continue my year 10 education. Today I attended our Awards Presentation and I particularly enjoyed the indigenous and Torres Strait Island dance performances.

Educational opportunities are limited at Groote Eyland. My parents want me to receive a good education and that is why they selected Djarragun College as their College of choice. I enjoy boarding life that includes tutoring, and also the opportunities that Djarragun College offers.

The facilities here are second to none. I particularly enjoy the Sporting Academy and even though I relish the opportunity to play most sports including Rugby and Basketball the focus for me is on AFL. Pyramid Power is affiliated with Djarragun College and we did well this year winning the under 14 and under 16 championships. My favourite AFL team is the Geelong Cats simply because they are the best!

ViPR - Loaded Movement Training WHAT IT IS: The ViPR ("Vitality, Performance and Re-Conditioning") is a large rubber tube that weighs between 4 & 26kg.

I also enjoy attending the after school Club and Culture programs at Djarragun College that includes subjects such as Art, Music, IT, fitness and Cultural Dancing. The subjects that I have chosen this year are English, Science and Maths. At my final two years at Djarrarun I propose to continue with my core subjects but I also want to learn as much as I can about the automotive industry. My parents and siblings are still at Groote Eylandt. Last week, Djarragun arranged for me to Skype with my mother brother and I really enjoyed speaking to them in our Anindilyakwa language. I look forward to the school break in December this year so that I can spent some time visiting my family and friends, spending time fishing and camping. When I finish year 12, I would like to enter the Police Academy, or learn a trade in the automotive field in the Department of Defence. I would like to move to a big city like Brisbane, Sydney, or Melbourne to pursue my career. However, at the same time, I would like to return home to Groote Eylandt when the opportunity arises to spend time with family and friends.

In my view, Djarragun College has provided the opportunities and has given me the confidence to pursue the options that are important to me.
