Creative Gordonvale...

Gordonvale Creatives is a group of local artists who have come together, with the support of the Gordonvale Community Hub, to exhibit their art works in a way that willplace Gordonvale firmly on the artistic map and give the town identity as the southern hub of the Cairns art circuit.

On Saturday, 07 June, colourful collections including sculpture, jewellery, paintings, needlework, rugs, prints and digital media were creatively displayed as the inaugural Gordonvale Creative Exhibition. In an art space in Bryce’s Arcade, the opening day of the exhibition saw four hundred visitors pass through the gallery, many of whom made their attendance additional to a visit to the Gordonvale Markets. The works of art displayed were diverse and surprising in their subjects and qualities. Traditional oil paintings rubbed shoulder with unconventional acrylics. Three dimensional displays modelled from wood, rope, wax and found items invited closer inspection to reveal their original intricacies and suggested meaning. Creativity and original talent could be seen in every item on display; however, most evident among all was the

obvious revelation of the passion and dedication of each artist. The curators must also be commended for their talent in displaying the works in an intriguing manner that tempted visitors to undertake a journey of discovery through the unexpected maze of rooms and corridors in the venue, of which each area revealed a complementary selection of the original works which were well placed for viewing. On Saturday evening, the organisers, visitors and the twenty contributing artists met at the gallery to celebrate the success of the event by way of an artists’ share bar and live music.

The art space was filled with the steady hum of excited voices of people recognising the success of the exhibition, delighting in the opportunity to chat with the artists and discovering the motivators behind the works. Due to the success of this event, the next exhibition will be held on Saturday, 05 July, and is to be promoted from the Gordonvale Markets and generously supported by the Creative Partnerships division of Cairns Regional Council.

Kenrick Street Park Security Tax Talk...

The Cairns Regional Council has recently upgraded security in Kenrick Street Park, Gordonvale with CCTV camera coming on line from Thursday 19 June 2014.

When claiming work related expenses, you need to keep in mind that if your expenses exceed $300, you must keep receipts or records for all that you claim and hold this information for 5 years.

The aim of this camera is to provide Council and Police ammunition in the fight for security of the Park. The structure is 12 meters high and includes 1 x fixed camera and 1 x PTZ remote operated swivel camera with a microwave link to Gordonvale Council Depot and onto the City's 24 surveillance operations room.

The ATO may request that you send them copies of these records and if you are unable to provide them, they can then fine you and charge you interest on any moneys that may be owed to them due to claiming an expense without holding the proper records. However, there are some exceptions to this rule, check with your Tax Agent when lodging your Tax Return.

There are also two 1000watt lights mounted on the top of the structure. This means that the Queensland Police will be able to receive realtime footage of vandalism and any other unruly and unlawful activity occurring on the site.

The circular barrier towards the top of the pole is to protect CCTV equipment from projectiles. This has been a while in coming but is a great step forward for the security of Gordonvale.

Rossi Death Shocks Community ABC Rural: By Charlie McKillop The Far North Queensland community is mourning the loss of another sugar industry stalwart, Bob Rossi junior, only weeks after the death of his father, Robert Rossi OAM. Bob Rossi grew up in the tiny cane farming community of Aloomba, south of Cairns, and followed in the footsteps of two generations to grow sugar cane. He knew he had big shoes to fill and, like his father, dedicated his life to serving the industry and community he loved.

This little fluff ball has been bottle fed by his foster carer since he was 7 days old, so he is used to lots of cuddles and human contact. He is a strong, healthy, playful boy who loves to climb and explore. He has lots of spunk! Could he be a cuddly addition to your family? He is available for cuddles at The Feed Shop.

Chairman of the peak body, Canegrowers, Paul Schembri, says Mr Rossi's contribution over 37 years representing growers as a director and chairman in the Cairns (formerly Mulgrave) district will never be forgotten. But MrSchembri says it's the character of the man that will be missed most by all who knew and worked alongside of him.

"He's probably been the longest-ever serving representative of the Cane growers organisation, so for someone to spend two-thirds of their life dedicated to the advancement of the sugar industry and the advocacy of growers, I think that's a tremendous achievement. I had the privilege of working with Bob Rossi for 12 years. He certainly would light up a room."

Bob Rossi's involvement in his local community extended beyond the sugar industry, including through the Parents' and Citizens' Association, rural training, agripolitics, coaching junior football and organising regular social dances at the Gordonvale RSL. Mr Rossi, who died at the age of 64, is survived by his wife, Pam, and children Lisa, Angela, Michael, Narelle, Glen and Daniel.

2014 Harvest Cabaret The 2014 Harvest Cabaret was held on the 24th May at the school hall, Gordonvale, with this years theme being a Nautical Night.

The night was a great success raising $5000 for the Gordonvale Palliative Care Hospital. How Bowen Therapy began Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916-1982) began developing his technique in the 1950’s in Geelong, Victoria. He was interested in ways of alleviating human suffering and began to notice that certain moves on the body had particular effects.

With no formal training in any type of therapy; in fact, he frequently stated that his work was ‘a gift from God’. Tom continued to develop and refine his technique throughout his lifetime and saw around 13,000 people a year in his clinic. This was verified by the 1975 Victorian government inquiry into alternative health care professionals. We are very fortunate to have had people like Tom Bowen that have provided us with a gentle but very effective technique for relieving pain and improving general health. His technique is now practised by trained therapists worldwide.

The Evacuation of North Qld

CALTEX COMMUNITY

(Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) When Pearl Harbour was bombed on 7th December 1941, many Australians were worried, but others thought we were too remote from the risk of attack.

That all dramatically changed after the bombing of Darwin on 19th February 1942 and subsequent attacks at Broome, Haru and Thursday Island, Townsville and even Mossman on 31st July 1942.

Many residents fled the area, halving the population of Cairns and district and headed for the tablelands, south and beyond. Properties were sold for far less than their value and others rented out at give away rates. The build up of Aussie troops was very noticeable and many buildings were taken over for military purposes.

Several bush camp sites were established on the Atherton tablelands which provided temporary accommodation for the troops.

For local school children, who had not been evacuated, school did not open at the start of 1942 school year, because of the fear of large numbers of children in the event of an attack. Teachers were still expected to come to school and were kept busy sewing, knitting and making camouflage nets and other articles for the Red Cross. At the rear of Hambledon State school in Edmonton (where the tennis courts are today, 1990) trenches were dug amongst tall grass. They were to be used as air raid shelters in case of bombing. A whistle was blown by the Head Teacher, at any time of the day, the children would make a frantic dash to the trenches and the kids thought it was a great game. They were taught to clench onto a school rubber, clothes peg or a doll between their teeth and cover their ears with their hands.

Luckily, they never had to apply their practice.

Parents were encouraged to provide their children with some kind of identity disc as well, in case they went missing. Jim Hill remembers in the early 1940’s when he was 9 years old or so; a disc was made by his uncle, Alf Griffin of Griffin Brothers Garage in Norman Street Gordonvale. Jim remembers that it was made out of one of his mum’s saucepan lids and stamped with his name and address. It was made to be worn around his neck, but Jim tied his on the lace of his sandshoe. Adults were issued with identity cards and travel was restricted, permits were required to travel into far North Qld with check points around Tully and El Arish. Car travel was restricted because of petrol rationing. Private cars were allocated a ration which would allow the car to travel about 50 miles a week. This was calculated by engine horsepower.

A register was made of private vehicles left in the district, so they would be available in the event of a forced evacuation. Many trucks had been taken over by the Government for use by Works Council and Civil Construction Corp, who were working on air strips and upgrading roads. Commodities such as meat, butter, sugar tea and clothing, were controlled by the use of coupons. This rationing continued for some time after the war ended.

Curtis Pitt assists the Retune for Gordonvale Gordonvale Golf Club Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt has provided financial help to Gordonvale Golf Club to assist with repairs to the club’s tractor. Mr Pitt said that during a conversation with the club’s President Trevor Miller, it was mentioned that the tractor was in parts in the shed and it required a new clutch.

“I knew how important it was to get the tractor back in action to mow the fairways and perform various other tasks - it's a vital piece of equipment for the club,” Mr Pitt said. “Gordonvale is a great country golf club, but unlike some of the other clubs in the region has limited finances and relies on a strong force of volunteers to keep the fairways and greens in top order.”

President Trevor Miller said he was happy and relieved to accept the donation. “To be honest, it is always a bit of a struggle to stay on top of things so getting a donation from our local MP meant the tractor will be fixed and it was one thing we no longer need to worry about,” Mr Miller said.

“We are currently working with Mr Pitt to resolve some issues with the council and the state government regarding our land tenure. Once resolved we will be able to apply for grants which will take a big financial burden away from the club. “Until then, we do what we have to do to get by – so the financial assistance from Mr Pitt was very much welcomed.”

Mr Pitt said he would like to see more people become members of the Gordonvale Golf Club. “The Gordonvale course is by far the most affordable of the Cairns clubs,” Mr Pitt said. “It is perfect for those who want to start out and for pensioners who need to watch their dollars. Social golf for non-members is available Monday to Friday with Monday green fees only $12. “There is also a junior program which is conducted under the guidance of qualified PGA Professional Daniel Gawley and the Junior Director Sean Metcalf. This program caters for both beginners through to advanced from 6 -17 years of age.”

As the final step in Australia’s successful move to digital-only TV, some channels will be changing frequencies. After they’ve changed, you’ll need to retune your digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder to find the channels that have moved.

These moves will free up broadcasting spectrum so that it can be used for new services such as mobile broadband. Just like the successful switch to digitalonly TV, the retune is being carefully planned to make sure the change is as easy as possible. The retune will affect most TV viewers in Australia.

If you watch your free-to-air channels via pay TV, your set-top box may be retuned for you by your provider. Some viewers may find some of their equipment will automatically detect changes to the channels and retune itself, or it may prompt them to retune. If you are missing a free-to-air digital TV channel or channels you will need to retune. Most people would have scanned for channels when they bought a new television – retuning follows the same process.

It is often called “auto-tuning”, “auto-scanning” or something similar. Start by pressing the “menu” button on your remote then look for your “set-up” options. Next, try to find words like “channels” or “auto-tuning”. You might want to write down your favourite channel, program recording and parental lock settings before you retune, as retuning may delete these settings. If you live in an apartment, you may be using a shared antenna system. If you are experiencing issues trying to retune your digital TV equipment after your retune date, you should first contact your property manager or body corporate.

The retune date for most Gordonvale residents is July 16th 2014. You’ll need to retune your digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder on or after this retune date. Some people within the same town or city will have different retune dates. This is because some areas may be serviced by a number of TV towers. The retune will take place across Australia progressively until the end of 2014.

Council Corner WHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND THE REGION Creative Gordonvale Exhibition After the success of this months exhibition the group has decided to hold a new show every month on Gordonvale Market day. This month saw well over 300 people come through the doors. All creative people are invited to get involved in the group shows. If you have work that you would like to submit please get in contact with the Gordonvale Community Hub. Work can be in any form and there will be a selection process managed by the elected curator for each show. The next show: Saturday July 5th 9am onwards, Bryces Arcade, Norman Street, Gordonvale.

Pets in the Park This annual community event, now in its 7th year, is being held at Ravizza Park Edmonton on Saturday 12th July, 12 -3:30pm. This major event is organised by Rock Impact Incorporated and supported by the Cairns Regional Council.

This unique event brings the local community of Cairns together in a

fun day for all. Children and adults bring their pets along to compete in novelty events to receive ribbons and trophies. Entertainment abounds, appealing to all, especially young families.

There is great 'easy listening' music, dog behaviour and obedience displays, wildlife displays, amusement rides, educational exhibits from various local animal welfare agencies including council, clubs, veterinarians, aid agencies etc., market stalls, and of course good food at family prices.

'Pets In The Park' is always very well patronised, and with the expansion of displays, entertainment and attractions the turnout of people increases every year.

Great Pyramid Race Gordonvale’s premiere event the Great Pyramid Race and Country Fair is on August 9th this year and the committee has been hard at work to make it the biggest and best event so far.

Organisers expect about 5000 visitors to pass through the town and partake in the many events that have been organized.

Norman Park, in the centre of town will host the Gordonvale Markets’ entertainment from local community groups, Kid Zone, rides and fireworks throughout the day and night. For those with a competitive edge, the first event the 1500 metre road race starts at 9.30am, followed by the 5 kilometre road race at 10.30am. At 11am a 5 kilometre fund raising run will be held around the town with all funds going to local Gordonvale charities. And of course at 2pm the big one the start of the 55th annual Great Pyramid Race.

The race was established in 1959 and over the years has seen the race become so popular that a few years ago organisers were forced to put a cap on the number of competitors. For more information go to www.pyramidrace.com.au

The ride was founded by Curtis Pitt and his wife Kerry to honour the memory of their daughter Isabel and aims to raise awareness and funds for Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Support (SANDS) Day one: Friday 25 July – Ride founder Curtis Pitt instigated the ride to honour the memory of his baby daughter Isabel who was stillborn at 41 weeks in 2008.Mr Pitt said since its inception in 2010 the ride has raised more than $21,000 for SANDS Queensland.

“Kerry and I vowed to do whatever we could to raise funds for SANDS, which provides much-needed counselling and support services for families and those affected by the sudden death of an infant or through reproductive loss.“Bereaved parents often find the need to talk to someone who has had an experience similar to their own. SANDS offers 24-hour support services via telephone and email as well as regular support meetings.

“All the proceeds from the Ride for Isabel will go to SANDS Queensland and will support counselling and bereavement services, as well as events like the ‘Walk to Remember’ right here in Cairns.”

Riders will depart the Gordonvale and ride up the Gillies Highway past Lake Barrine and finish the day at the Malanda Falls Caravan Park. Day two: Saturday 26 July – Riders will depart Malanda riding down the Palmerston Highway finish in Innisfail Day three: Sunday 27 July – Riders will depart the Innisfail and ride the back roads stopping in Babinda for morning tea before riding to Gordonvale for a BBQ in Norman Park. Registration fees for 2014: 3 days – $250 (including a custom jersey) 2 days – $1601 day – $90 Support persons – $35 per day. The ride is fully supported with escort vehicles and meals and refreshment breaks catered for.

All proceeds from the ride will be donated to SANDS Queensland and will support counselling and bereavement services, as well as events like the ‘Walk to Remember’ being held in Cairns later this year. Since its inception in 2010, the ride has raised over $25,000 for SANDS Queensland.

As I mentioned last month, I will be explaining the Tender Process as this is a very successful way to sell property. I recently sold a large acreage property at White Rock by way of Tender, netting the happy owners over One Million Dollars!

The process is as follows: you set a time, date and location for the Tender to close; You market the property for 4 to 5 weeks without a price, nor price range; interested buyers will put their offer on a Contract of Sale with the price and terms that suit their particular needs, they seal the Contract in an envelope and hand it to the Agent who keeps it safe and opens it at the prescribed date and time. When the envelopes are opened, the sellers can then choose which offers they wish to negotiate on based on the offered terms and price.

This method of sale is sometimes more beneficial than an Auction because you don’t necessarily need to pay cash under the hammer and can offer based on your circumstances with a building, pest and finance clause, if required. To ascertain a price, buyers will use current sales in the area, they will take into account the uniqueness of the property and their own limits of funds to put their offer forward.
