Pyramid Race The biggest event on Gordonvales Calender the Great Pyramid Race and Country Fair will is on once again for 2016 on August 13th. The weekend event revolves around one of the most challenging foot races in Australia and the race now attracts competitors from all around Australia as well as overseas. The race itself is a 12km run from Norman Park to the summit of Walshs’ Pyramid and return. Although an extremely challenging climb to the top, the gruelling event is usually decided in just over 1 hour and 15 minutes with the winner coming in shortly after that time. Competitors continue to flow in for the next few hours. Last years winner of the Pyramid Race was Jimmy Hilton in a time of 1 hour 19 minutes, followed by Steven Francis in a time of 1 hour 30 minutes. The first lady to cross the line was Deahane Turnbull in a time of 1 hour 43 minutes. It is expected that all three of these competitors will once again take on the hill. Combined with the Great Pyramid Race is a 5 kilometre charity race. Last years winner of the race was Neil Labinsky who is the current record holder of the larger race. Competitors in this race are encouraged to raise money for their local charity and last year the major beneficiaries were Motor Neurone Disease Australia, Out there Kowanyama and Gordonvale Primary School Chaplaincy program. Although the event is centred around the Great Pyramid race, there are many other things on the weekend for some of us that are not so physically motivated. Saturday morning kicks off early with the markets, followed by entertainment throughout the day in the park from local community groups including schools, dancing troupes, martial arts clubs and bands. There will be the usual side shows and the ever popular big boys toys. All local hotels will be offering great venues to watch the start and finish of the race. The event in previous years have attracted an extra 5000 visitors to the town to enjoy the celebrations. This is officially the 57th year that the race has been run after Local legend has it that two Gordonvale cane farmers, while quenching their thirst at the local pub, decided to settle an argument with a race to the peak of the nearby Walsh’s Pyramid. A wager was made between the two to see who could run the race in the quickest possible time and it created so much interest that the local bookie at the time took bets on the outcome. From this unlikely start has evolved “The Great Pyramid Race”. The first official race was organized in 1959 to coincide with Queensland’s Centenary Celebrations and it has become an annual event where some of the finest and fittest present themselves and strive to conquer this formidable mountain in unbelievable record times. So get down to Norman Park on the 13th of August and support the biggest event on Gordonvales calender.

Disability Housing Centre A $1.5 million disability housing centre has opened its doors in Gordonvale last month, providing sustainable and long-term living arrangements for up to nine local people with disability. Officially opening St John’s Community Care’s Young Life Style Centre, Queensland Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said the project was a great example of how a public-private partnership could expand accommodation options for people with a disability. “As part of the Elderly Parent Carer Innovation Initiative (EPCII), this project will go a long way towards giving older parent carers more certainty about the long-term care options for their son or daughter with disability,” Mr Pitt said. “These three, four-bedroom houses will provide permanent, safe and independent living for nine local people with disability, as well as accommodation for three live-in carers. EPCII is all about coming up with smart solutions, and I am pleased that with the help of local organisations like St John’s Community Care, we are working to address a shortfall in appropriate accommodation options. “I turned the sod on this project in February and it has created around 40 local jobs during construction as well as carer roles and flow on benefits to local business into the future, which is a win-win for our community.” The Palaszczuk Government provided close to $1 million towards the facility through capital funding, with a further $550,000 contribution made by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, which oversees St John’s Community Care. Chair of St John’s Community Care Theo Bacalakis said there would be up to 24-hour care available and the new premises would provide a place for residents to enjoy and be looked after by trained care workers. “This accommodation will benefit carers and individuals by giving them peace of mind for their future needs.” he said. For more information about disability support and services, including the Elderly Parent Carer Innovation Initiative visit https://www.communities.qld.gov.au/disability/keyprojects/elderly-parent-carer-innovationinitiative
What’s happening at the Gordonvale Chamber of Commerce The Gordonvale Chamber of Commerce continues to put in place a number of new initiatives in an effort to bring life back into the town centre. One of the main areas the chamber is focusing on is bringing in Recreational Vehicles and caravans to enjoy what Gordonvale has to offer. We are hoping to present each of these visitors with a welcome pack containing discount vouchers and free offers from the local business community thereby encouraging them to walk around the town and spend their money. Any local shops that would like to contribute can contact the chamber on gordonvalechamber@gmail.com Other initiatives are the construction of a website and facebook page as well as a local community directory listing all local businesses. There is currently an ongoing survey asking peoples experiences of Gordonvale and what we can do as an organisation to improve the town. This survey can be located online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/5KB33X2. A business lunch has been organised for Friday the 29th of July 2016 at the Parkview Tavern. Thanks to the efforts of Cr Brett Moller we have secured the Mayor of Cairns to address our inaugural lunch at the Parkview Tavern. Final details of the lunch are being organised and tickets will shortly be on sale. Last of all the Chamber will shortly be on a recruiting drive. The Chamber is a group of like minded business people with the best interest of the town at the fore front of their minds. The aim is to promote the local business community, so that the residents think and spend locally first. Cost to join the chamber is $100 for the year and includes member benefits including a page on the Gordonvale website, discounts on business lunches, advertising and benefits at the local Gordonvale carols by candlelight and entry into next years local directory. We are all about promoting and keeping everything local. The chamber meets the second Monday of each month and we hope to see you come along and contribute to the future of the town.

The ride is in aid of Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Support (SANDS) and was founded by Curtis Pitt and his wife Kerry to honour the memory of their daughter Isabel. All proceeds from the ride will be donated to SANDS Queensland and will support counselling and bereavement services, as well as events like the ‘Walk to Remember’ being held in Cairns later this year. Sands Queensland provides support, information, education and advocacy for parents and families who experience the death of a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth, newborn death or other pregnancy losses. At Sands there are people who understand because they too have been through this experience. Sands Queensland also works with health care and other professional groups to ensure that families receive the support and information they need. Sands Queensland supports parents whose baby has died at any stage during pregnancy or the newborn period. The death of a baby is a devastating experience whenever it occurs and Sands does not distinguish between losses. Every parent’s experience is individual, and every circumstance is unique. Community Service Awards for JP’s State Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave, Curtis Pitt, recently recognised long-time residents of Gordonvale Frank Steene and Ralph Powell for their services to the public as volunteers in the JPs in the Community Program. Mr Pitt said it is important to remember the crucial jobs that JPs carry out for the community. JPs are trained and appointed by the State Government to undertake special responsibilities, such as witnessing signatures in Powers of Attorney, processing Affidavits and Statutory Declarations and certifying copies of documents to name a few – all on a voluntary basis. “JPs provide a great service to the community, and the important work they do enables lawyers and the courts to concentrate on cases which require professional legal training,” Mr Pitt said. “This is a significant contribution which assists in the delivery of a fair, efficient and accessible justice system for Queensland.”

Heel Pain
Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. The plantar fascia is the flat band of tissue (ligament) that connects your heel bone to your toes. It supports the arch of your foot. If you strain your plantar fascia, it gets weak, swollen, and irritated (inflamed). Then your heel or the bottom of your foot hurts when you stand or walk. Plantar fasciitis is caused by straining the ligament that supports your arch. Repeated strain can cause tiny tears in the ligament. These can lead to pain and swelling. Most people with plantar fasciitis have pain when they take their first steps after they get out of bed or sit for a long time. You may have less stiffness and pain after you take a few steps. But your foot may hurt more as the day goes on. It may hurt the most when you climb stairs or after you stand for a long time. Releasing the muscles will, over time, reduce this pain and allow your heal to recover. I can help you with this sometimes debilitating issue. Don’t put up with heel pain, there is relief. I AM AVAILABLE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. PLEASE CONTACT ME ON 4056 3656 OR 0431 303 453. Home visits may be arranged and Gift vouchers available.

The Life of Jang Tim
Robyn’s Real Estate Read
Father, Grandfather and one of Gordonvale’s first Greengrocers. (Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) Jang Tim was born in village of Pong Tao in the county of Zhongshan China on 1st December 1881. In the 1880’s life in China was difficult and many sought to seek their fortunes overseas. Like some of the early immigrants at the time, Jang Tim maintained his independence by borrowing money from his grandfather for his passage to Australia. At the young age of 17, he boarded the SS “Easton” and made the long and perilous journey to Far North Qld and landed in Cooktown in 1898. By now, the gold rush was over and Jang Tim settled in Gordonvale. He was registered as Tim Jang and his registered place of abode was GordonvaleBabinda Road, where he made a living carting vegetables around the town. Jang Tim grew potatoes and made a good living as a greengrocer, regularly sending money home. He returned to China at least three times and on one of those visits when he was 30 years of age he married Jang, Low She. Together they had two daughters, Jang Gock Hoon and Jang Gock Hing. (Born in 1912 and 1926 respectively). They also had a son, Jang Gock Sing who was born in 1928. Jang Tim couldn’t persuade his son to follow him to Australia and so spent his final years here alone. He died after a long illness on 25th May 1952 at the Cairns Base Hospital and was buried at the Cairns Cemetery the following day. His death certificate obtained by his granddaughter in 2014, however, listed his place of death as the Gordonvale Memorial hospital.
Welcome to this month's Editorial of all things Real Estate. The real estate sales and rental markets are chugging along with properties in most price categories selling quite quickly if priced fairly to this current buyers' market. There has been a bit of a slow down due to the Elections and End Of Financial Year however these major events are now behind us and we should see good sales leading up to Christmas. This months' CPO statistics are: The overall number of houses for sale in the Cairns Region over the last 4 weeks is approx. 1,487, down 14 homes. The number of Houses for sale in Gordonvale is 71 - same as a month ago. Goldsborough has 9 houses on the market, down 1 and Edmonton figures are 131 up 4 houses and for sale in the last 4 weeks, showing a higher supply than demand in some cases. If you would like to receive a Listing Checklist on how to maximise your selling price or are looking for a no obligation appraisal of your biggest asset in today's market please give me a call or email for an honest and confidential chat about your real estate needs - Robyn Hawley-Whitton - Mob: 0488 071 007 or Email: robynhw@cpo.com.au
One of the senior members of CADCAI (Cairns and District Chinese Ass Inc.) and long term resident of Gordonvale, Buddy Leelong, recalled having known of and met Jang Tim when he was a little boy of 10 or 12 years. He used to accompany him on his daily routes to deliver and sell his produce from door to door with his horse and dray. He remembered Jan Tim as a good man who lived a simple life in a shedlike structure, surrounded by his vegetable gardens. Buddy used to call him Äh Bak” (elderly uncle in Chinese) and was often rewarded with two bob for his show of respect. He would often mimic Jang Tim’s call of “long-a-bean-a, cab-ba-gee-a, tur-ni-a-pa, let-tuc-cee-a”, as he drove his fruit and vegetable cart around Gordonvale. Although Buddy never understood any of the Chinese words Jang Tim said to him, Buddy at 80 years of age recalled his memories with ease and fondness when recounting them to his Granddaughter Ms Zheng, who visited Gordonvale from China in 2015. Buddy recalled Jim Tang having a greengrocer shop next to a laundry near Thumm Street in Gordonvale. Buddy’s wife also shared a story of how one day, an American paratrooper landed and crashed into Jang Tim’s outdoor cooking stove.

Portia Eden World #1 Gordonvale has a new world champion after Portia Eden returned from the UCI BMX world titles held in Medellin Colombia in May. Now ranked number 1 the competition was tough for Portia, however all the hard work prior to the competition in the lead up to the titles paid off and she never dropped a race all day. Portia has been in training for 4 years to finally achieve the top spot. The Welcome Home from Portia's school Saint Michael's and Gordonvale community was fantastic and she was very excited to get home and celebrate with everyone. Portia’s next challenge is the USA Grand National Competition being held in Tulsa Oklahoma in November this year. Portia is already well travelled with many overseas trips including competing in the world titles in Belgium last year and Rotterdam in 2014. In 2013 Portia raced her first World titles in New Zealand after taking out the Australian championships. Portia came home from New Zealand as World ranked number 3 and has rapidly improved to now be ranked number 1. Portia started her beloved sport BMX at the tender age of 2 and from there has been unstoppable, her love for the sport quickly developed into a serious obsession with riding. Portia is supported by many local business.
Town Centre freshen up The Gordonvale Council depot has been busy with a schedule of works in and around Gordonvale's town centre over the last month. Newly elected Councillor for Division 1 Brett Moller led the push for pressure cleaning of the footpaths down Norman and Gordon Streets, the laying of new footpath and upgrades to pedestrian crossings and work on the toilet blocks in Norman Park. “The Gordonvale town centre needed a lift and the support I have had from the Council depot in attending to my requests and bringing works forward has been fantastic”, he said. “I am looking forward to working with the Gordonvale Chamber of Commerce and the Gordonvale community to better promote the town centre and attract locals and visitors back into town to utilise the businesses, services and assets we have to offer.” he went on to comment.
Cane Trains About The Mulgrave Central Mill advises cane crushing season has commenced and cane rail will run until late November. Cane trains and bin haulers will be operating throughout the far northern region from as far north as Mossman and south along the east coast. Cane trains are busy hauling bins on local railway lines 7 days a week, 24 hours a day during the crushing season. Dedicated cane rail crossings operate throughout local suburbs and across main highways, and while all train level crossings are signed, some minor road crossings may not have flashing lights. Whilst locals are often familiar with sugar cane train crossings a warning exists for all motorists and road users to be vigilant as the majority of crashes in the region involve local drivers. Cairns Crime Prevention Co-ordinator, Sergeant Cary Coolican said, “All motorists and road users should remain vigilant during cane crushing season and pay particular attention at crossings to ensure you slow down and look before crossing train tracks.” Common sense should be applied and motorist’s shouldn’t park or stop on rail lines. It is essential to stop at train crossings with operating flashing lights and slow down when approaching any train crossing. “Parents are urged to discuss railway safety with their children and remind them that it takes a considerable amount of time to actually stop when a locomotive is carrying cane bins. Children should not be playing on train tracks or near cane bins at all. Keen fishers are also reminded not to fish off train bridges as the consequences if caught out unexpectedly can be devastating as well as fatal,” Sergeant Coolican said.
SAFETY TIPS TO PROTECT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY: • Look out for flashing lights or Stop Signs at cane train crossings – STOP & WAIT! • Become familiar with cane train crossings in your area. • Recognise the signs and be aware of crossings that don’t have flashing lights. • Don’t play near cane railway tracks or crossings. • Don’t race a cane train!
