Safer Options for Students Crossing Bruce Highway at Gordonvale Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt has announced that school students dangerously crossing the Bruce Highway just south of the Draper Road lights at Gordonvale will now benefit from safer passage. Mr Pitt said he had been working with the Gordonvale State High School community on the issue for more than two years following after the issue was first raised at a P&C meeting. “A new pedestrian refuge will be constructed with street lighting to enhance safety and a footpath on the western side of the highway to direct students to the refuge itself,” Mr Pitt said. “The site is about 300m south of the designated intersection at Draper Road intersection on the Bruce Highway near Sheppards Street where many local kids have been short-cutting to get to the high school. “I know many local drivers have been distressed by recent near-misses and as the local Member I’ve shared the concern of parents and teachers for the safety of students on or near our roads. “The pedestrian works will get underway in August and are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments as part of a wider Bruce Highway Safety Package program of works. “As part of these works, I’ve asked the Department to assess the need for sound barriers to mitigate the noise of traffic on nearby residential areas and the future Alley Park sporting precinct. “I know Minister Mark Bailey has written to his Federal counterpart seeking a meeting to discuss opportunities to bring forward projects as part of the jointly funded $8.5 billion Bruce Highway program. Mr Pitt also said that roadworks and upgrades would get underway today on the Bruce Highway at MacDonnell Creek, south of Fishery Falls. The Wide Centreline Treatment (WCLT) works would take about three months to complete and encouraged road users to plan their journeys to account for minor delays.

“Works will extend from McDonnell Creek School to Fig Tree Creek and include an 11-metre-wide seal with a one metre gap between the north and southbound traffic lanes to allow for WCLT,” Mr Pitt said. “The project also includes upgrades to the access and bus parking facilities at McDonnell Creek School. “For the safety of motorists and road workers, changed traffic conditions and speed reductions will be implemented through the work site during working hours, so I recommend drivers plan accordingly.
