Safer Options for Students Crossing Bruce Highway at Gordonvale Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt has announced that school students dangerously crossing the Bruce Highway just south of the Draper Road lights at Gordonvale will now benefit from safer passage. Mr Pitt said he had been working with the Gordonvale State High School community on the issue for more than two years following after the issue was first raised at a P&C meeting. “A new pedestrian refuge will be constructed with street lighting to enhance safety and a footpath on the western side of the highway to direct students to the refuge itself,” Mr Pitt said. “The site is about 300m south of the designated intersection at Draper Road intersection on the Bruce Highway near Sheppards Street where many local kids have been short-cutting to get to the high school. “I know many local drivers have been distressed by recent near-misses and as the local Member I’ve shared the concern of parents and teachers for the safety of students on or near our roads. “The pedestrian works will get underway in August and are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments as part of a wider Bruce Highway Safety Package program of works. “As part of these works, I’ve asked the Department to assess the need for sound barriers to mitigate the noise of traffic on nearby residential areas and the future Alley Park sporting precinct. “I know Minister Mark Bailey has written to his Federal counterpart seeking a meeting to discuss opportunities to bring forward projects as part of the jointly funded $8.5 billion Bruce Highway program. Mr Pitt also said that roadworks and upgrades would get underway today on the Bruce Highway at MacDonnell Creek, south of Fishery Falls. The Wide Centreline Treatment (WCLT) works would take about three months to complete and encouraged road users to plan their journeys to account for minor delays.

“Works will extend from McDonnell Creek School to Fig Tree Creek and include an 11-metre-wide seal with a one metre gap between the north and southbound traffic lanes to allow for WCLT,” Mr Pitt said. “The project also includes upgrades to the access and bus parking facilities at McDonnell Creek School. “For the safety of motorists and road workers, changed traffic conditions and speed reductions will be implemented through the work site during working hours, so I recommend drivers plan accordingly. Queensland Ambulance Service Gordonvale Centenary On the 2nd of July 2016 the Queensland Ambulance Service in Gordonvale will celebrate a Century of permanent service to the Gordonvale community. The original service from 1907 was initially a volunteer one followed by being a Sub Station of Cairns with the Gordonvale Centre becoming permanent and self - governing on the 1st of July 1916. The Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade in Gordonvale began with Superintendent Jack Johnson as Officer in charge for 17 years. The governing Board was appointed from Local identities led by Chairman Mr M.P. Muir who held that position until 1929. Funding for the service was primarily by Public subscription, raffles and bingo to pay wages and supply equipment for the “Bearers” as they were known. In 1991 changes to the State Government Ambulance Act enabled the QATB to become the Queensland Ambulance Service which came into effect on the 1st July 1991 (25 years ago). The transition with State Government funding, from Bearers to Officers to Paramedics with amazing results not only for the Paramedics but the Communities they work in. Our current OIC is Mrs Rosie McEachern. The disbanding of the boards were followed by Local Ambulance Committees made up of volunteers from the community which provide a conduit between the Community and the QAS and fundraise to provide extra equipment for QAS for use in their relevant Communities. The current Committee would welcome any member of the Gordonvale Community to join our ranks and help this wonderful Service. The current President is Mr Gary Wilson. On the 2nd July 2016 the Ambulance Station in Alley St Gordonvale will hold an open day from 9am to 12md for any member of the Public who would like to tour the Station and see the vehicles, equipment etc used in the daily activities of the Ambulance Service. There will be a display of memorabilia, uniforms, photos from previous years. This is to be followed by a lunch at 12.30pm the Gordonvale Bowls Club at a cost of $35 per head. Booking are essential for catering purposes by the 24th June 2016. For bookings and further information please contact the LAC Secretary – Beryl Wilson on Phone 4056 1715 / Mobile 0412 647 779 or via email granberyl@bigpond.com

Do It For Demi Bullride

Sudoku Puzzle

We have been following Miriwinnin teenager Demi Bettinis journey for some time now. The 14 year old was diagnosed with cancer and unfortunately earlier this year received some bad news that the cancer had returned. Demi and her family are now looking for alternative treatments in a hope that they can cure the sickness. This treatment is only available overseas and is quite expensive, causing extra stress on the family who are already dealing with the latest news. With this in mind a bullride event has been organized for Saturday the 4th of June at the rodeo grounds at Redbank Road in Gordonvale. Organisers are hoping to raise in excess of $40, 000 and hoping for over 2000 people to attend and show their support. A number of top bull riders have already committed to attending. Gates open at 3pm with the first bullride starting at 5pm. There are grand stands in place and a number of corporate boxes have been set up. The bullriding is expected to finish at 9pm when the band Backlash will take over until midnight. People can also donate money to assist Demi and her family. All donations over $2 are tax deductible. We need as many people as we can to support this event. Just follow Redbank Road out towards the boatramp and the grounds will be on your right hand side.

The number of Houses for sale in Gordonvale is 70, up 8 (showing an upward trend). Goldsborough has 10 houses on the market, up 2 and Edmonton figures are 131 down 10 houses for sale in the last 4 weeks, showing good sell through. Take Care Swimming at Greenpatch

Community Calendar

Patrons of the Greenpatch swimming area are asked to be careful whilst swimming in the location after recent sightings of a crocodile sunbaking itself in the area. This picture was taken on the 24th of May 2016 at 10:30am. There have been many sightings of crocodiles of the years in the river system and people are asked to take care. Australia is one of the very few places in the world where estuarine crocodiles have a good chance of survival in the wild, and the only country where the freshwater crocodile is found. Because crocodiles are an important part of the food chain and help keep our wetland environments healthy and stable, protecting them is vitally important. This means that all Australians have a responsibility to conserve and manage the country's crocodile populations carefully. When visiting crocodile habitats, take care. Respect these animals and appreciate that, like other native animals, crocodiles are part of the natural and cultural heritage of northern Australia. Follow these simple guidelines to help protect crocodiles: never interfere with crocodiles or their eggs; report any incidents of crocodile killing or poaching to the nearest EHP office. “SCIATICA PAIN” CAN BE A RIGHT PAIN IN THE BUTT! Sciatic pain can be quite debilitating as anyone who has had it would agree. The pain from sciatica is felt along the path of the sciatic nerve affecting the back, hip, and outer side of the leg. It is generally caused by compression of a spinal nerve root in the lower back. The pain can be accompanied by tingling, 'pins and needles', or numbness, and sometimes by muscular weakness in the leg. Sciatica can be caused by slipped discs, pinched nerves or some forms of arthritis. It is recommended that you see your doctor to assess the root cause of your particular problem. Regardless of the cause, tight muscles can exasperate this situation and releasing these muscles often gives significant and sometime long-term relief. I have worked with many clients with sciatic pain and achieved great results by relaxing the muscles that were tight or in trauma which then takes the pressure off the sciatic nerve. Clients include pregnant ladies who have had this issue for many months during their pregnancy and older clients in their eighties who have tolerated the pain for many years. If you or someone you know has sciatic pain, let them know that there is relief, with gentle muscle release therapies. Robyn is available by appointment only. Please see advertisement for contact details.

Council Conversations ...with Division 1 Councillor Brett Moller It has been a busy induction period at the Cairns Regional Council as the new Councillor for Division 1 after the March elections. My fellow Councillors who have been re-elected together with the Management and staff of Council have been very supportive in helping me settle into the new role and learning the systems and processes of local government to help me effectively represent our residents. The Committees that help Council function have been appointed with the previous Community Services Committee being split into two separate committees, being Cultural Services and Sports and Community Services, Chaired by Cr Linda Cooper and Cr Cathy Zeiger respectively. Deputy Mayor Terry James continues to Chair the Planning and Economic Committee, Cr Richie Bates Chairs Water and Waste and Cr John Schilling continues in the role of Chair of Infrastructure. I have been appointed Chair of the Governance Committee which is the workings of Council in finance, human resources, marketing, systems and processes and so on. I am also a member of the Water and Waste and Infrastructure committees and all Councillors sit on the Planning and Economic committee. Yes it will be busy but I am pleased to be so involved in the workings of Council. My Gordonvale office at the library has been fitted out and I am available Tuesday mornings at the office for appointments between the hours of 9am and 12 noon, or as otherwise arranged. My contact details are on the Council website and as appears in this edition of the Mulgrave News and I am easily contactable.

You will frequently see me walking around Gordonvale and at community, sporting and school events so please do not hesitate to say hello and have a chat about any local issue that may be concerning you. Some goings on since my election have been the continuation of the Alley Park redevelopment and you will see that the car park has been completed and the second field has been prepped and ready for grassing with the lights to go in. It is hoped that this field will be ready for use by the end of September. The new children's playground will go in, in July. I have had the footpath between the Newsagency and the Gordonvale Hotel gurney'd in Norman Street with that to be rolled out further on both sides of the street and along the Gordon Street retail area. I will be engaging with the Gordonvale Chamber, business owners and landlords to see what accord we can reach to uplift the streetscape going forward. It was fun filled mornings attending the Teddy Bears Picnic in Kenrick Park sponsored by Council in celebration of National Families Week and the opening of the Gordonvale Early Years Centre and meeting manger Tanya Robinson and her team. The support of parents, children and families provided, help us to have a strongly socially connected community which contributes to making our community healthy, vibrant and more liveable. The Council budget will be handed down in June so I look forward to updating you in next months edition of Mulgrave News.

The origins of Gordonvale Turf Club

Part 2

Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum

During 1920, a new grandstand was constructed, it was 7 feet high in front and 16 feet behind for a better view of the racing, with a booth and tea room underneath. Albert May who had come to Gordonvale from Chillagoe won the contract to build the grandstand and had established a cabinet makers business on the corner of Highleigh Road and Davids Street. Train services were still being arranged to meet race days. A brass band provided an entertaining program and the Ladies Committee ran a popular tea stall. The Club’s March 1921 balance sheet showed an overdraft of nearly 49 pounds, such were the hard times of the nation. The Club operated with guarantors who came to their assistance and membership was up, which showed confidence in the Committee. The ladies tea booth had takings almost as good as the betting booth and the President stated that the ladies supplied one of the finest afternoon teas to be found. By 1923 the Club had reduced its fees after having secured control of unregistered racing in the district. They joined the NRDA and they were holding races for which 60 horses were nominated. The Cairns Club was opposed to this idea and preferred an amalgamation with other Clubs and wanted to establish a Far Northern Racing Association in Mareeba, Cairns and Innisfail (NQRA). A year later the Gordonvale Turf club was in sound condition with prize money paid of 915 pounds. Racing had revived. Mr Seymour Howe was re-elected as President, Mr John Gordon remained Patron, Mr W. Thomas re-elected as Treasurer and Mr R. Simmonds reelected as Secretary. In 1925 the NDRA was seeking recognition by the NQRA, hoping to get the necessary fill up to racing and reunite with Cairns as there had been a bookie’s strike and bad weather and the club had not done so well. In the depression years of the 1930’s, times were tough. Simply attracting members to working bees to tidy up the track before racing season became difficult. In 1933 unemployed men who were living in the racecourse buildings came to lend a hand. By 1934 the trespassers who’d made the racecourse their home, were asked to move on. The number of itinerants had increased and while their presence had been tolerated previously, their untidy habits became intolerable. Fences and stairs had been smashed for firewood to ‘boil the billy’ and refuse was littering the grandstand. By 1940 the Club was holding 6 race meetings plus their two day annual Boxing Day event. In 1950 the Gordonvale Turf Club held 10 race meetings, with prize money up to 1594 pounds. The Club was offering programmes at opening race days from open category to 10th hack.

The chief event was the Gordonvale Cup (1 mile) and the Mulgrave River Handicap. (5 ½ furlongs) The scrub had all been cleared giving the racegoer a good view of the whole track. Today, the 28.9ha reserve is jointly leased from Cairns Regional Council for both a racecourse and golf club activities. One hundred years from its inception as the Gordonvale Turf Club in 1916, racegoers can thoroughly enjoy a day of country racing as well as ‘Fashions on the field’. The Committees work tirelessly to provide a very entertaining day to horse owners, jockeys and the mingling crowd.

Gordonvale Lions Club seeking New Members Gordonvale Lions are actively seeking new members with the club set to celebrate its 50th birthday in 2018. The Gordonvale lions club meets twice a month from 7.30pm till 9.30pm and it is a social event including dinner. The club have a commercial food van which they use for fundraising for events around Gordonvale and cairns including the Pyramid Race, relay for Life and Carols by candlelight. 95% of the funds are donated back to the community organsiations such as schools, Guides, Scouts, Gordonvale Hospital Auxillary and the Pyramid retirement centre. Dean’s Epic Pyramid Feat Not a day goes past when someone looks at the Pyramid and says, “I’m going to climb that one day”. Well recently Dean Cameron said exactly the same and decided to do just that completing the epic adventure in just under 6 hours. This may not seem, that amazing until you hear that Dean is blind. Anyone that has done it will understand the obstacles, not just physical obstacles on the track, but also the mental obstacles to overcome to complete such and journey. Dean and his wife Donna, a past student of Gordonvale State High School were in Gordonvale last year for the 50th year celebrations and decided to conquer the Pyramid. Dean and Donna set off shortly before 11.30am with a bottle of water and a few snacks commencing the climb from the car park. The going was quite difficult at first as Donna struggled to locate the arrows that define the exact track, but continued on regardless eventually reaching ½ way. After ½ way the climb gets a little steeper and more hazardous. Donna said that her voice was getting raspy as she spoke to Dean about what obstacles were ahead of him including tree roots, rock faces and logs across the track.

Gordonvale Turf Club Gala Ball On Friday 23rd of September the Gordonvale Turf Club will present the 2016 100 Years of Racing Gala Ball. Beer and Champagne will be served upon arrival and a buffet dinner including dessert will be served under the stars. Entertainment will be provided by respected poet Rupert McCall and the music by the band, “The Wait”. There will also be a special auction of sports memorabillia and other prizes including lucky door prizes. Tickets are on sale now at $100 each or $900 for a table of 10.

Page 3 Sudoku Solution

As the climb continued, a number of false peaks presented themselves, but the pair continued on eventually reaching the summit by mid-afternoon. However the challenge was not over. The downhill can be just as hazardous as the uphill, but Donna and Dean set about completing the climb down as well. At 5.15pm they had made it back to the car park in one piece and completing an amazing journey that will take a lot to be surpassed. The Camerons’ are no strangers to these type of Challenges though. In 2012, they set about riding from Cairns to Brisbane on a tandem bike to raise funds for Cancer research. Donna and Dean are committed to returning to Gordonvale next year and hope to once again conquer the Pyramid in a faster time. WWW. MULGR
