ANZAC Day Commemorations ANZAC day commemorations kicked off in Gordonvale in this the 100th year with the Gordonvale RSL conducting its annual ANZAC dinner at the club on the 18th of April. Special guest for the evening was Lieutenant General (Retired) K.J. Gillespie AC DSC CSM. Lt. Gen. Gillespie was a member of the Australian army from 1968 until his retirement as Chief of Army in 2013. The evening was well attended as guests enjoyed a two course dinner. This annual event is one of the biggest fund raising events for the Gordonvale RSL. Commemorations continued early on Saturday the 25th as a larger crowd than normal gathered just after 5am at the Cenotaph opposite the RSL club for the dawn service. The moving early morning service showed a strong resurgence in ANZAC Day commemorations. The dawn service was followed by the ANZAC day March from the Gordonvale State School to Norman Park where a parade and wreath laying ceremony was held. The March and parade was well supported with many of the armed services, local schools and community groups taking part. A small convoy of restored historical military vehicles were a focal point of the parade and were a real hit with the crowd. Following the official ceremony the RSL was open where members and guests enjoyed the rest of the day, a few drinks and games of two up. There were many other commemorations around the town over the ANZAC weekend including the ceremonies at Babinda State School, Gordonvale State High School and the Gordonvale Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital.
