VE NEWS EDITION 38, APRIL 2013

98th Anzac Day Commemoration By DWR Once again Gordonvale will take a lead role when they kick off the Anzac Day commemorations on Thursday the 25th of April 2013. This is the 98th anniversary of the immortal landing on Gallipoli, with only two years before the centenary commemorations. Plans for the 100th anniversary are well underway. The dawn parade for 2013 kicks off with gunfire at 3.30am at the Cenotaph in Norman Park across the road from the Gordonvale RSL and then a parade assembly at 4.15am. This will be followed by the early morning parade and then a wreath laying ceremony. The congregation will then move onto the RSL for breakfast which will be for all current service and ex service members. Members of the community are encouraged to attend the early morning dawn service as a mark of respect and show our ever increasing support of those that went before us. The community commemorative service will commence with a march at 9.30am with all parade participants requested to form up outside

the Gordonvale Primary School at 9am and march to the Gordonvale Cenotaph in Norman Park. Last years' March included many serving and exservice members as well as representatives from the local schools and other local community organisations. A highlight of last year's parade was the fly over of war birds from Mareeba during the parade. 2013 will also be a special year leading up to the Anzac Day celebrations with Gordonvale RSL hosting an 'Anzac Dinner' on Saturday night the 20th of April. The guest speaker for this event will be Lieutenant Colonel P. The RSL dinner is on Saturday the 20th of April at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. In support of the event will be the famous 1 RAR Band. Tickets for the event are $60 and available from the Gordonvale RSL. This is an event not to be missed. For more information on the dinner including tickets, menu, program of events and more, please visit the Gordonvale RSL website www.gordonvalersl.com.

The Beef n’ Ice-cream Boy Part 1: By Wendy Maddocks Russell Spurrier was born in Gordonvale in 1950 and by 1958, he was riding with his father, Bill, bringing the cattle that had come by rail from the sale yards in Mareeba, to the SES stock yards in Gordonvale. Russell rode his own horse which was one of Thomas Bros. old racehorses, “Barrine Lad”. The cattle were also held in the “Common”, between Cairns Road and the Bruce Highway and were brought to the slaughter yards via George and Church streets as well as Templeton Street because of there being less traffic. During the school holidays, Russell and his brother Greg, also worked in the slaughter yards. After cleaning up at the end of the day, they brought home various cuts of meat which their mother cooked up. On one occasion, their Aunty Flo dropped in and asked what was cooking because it smelt delicious. “Calf balls,” was the reply. “Do you give them to the chooks?” asked Aunty Flo. “No,” said Mrs Spurrier. “The boys eat them. They call them “Prarie Oysters”. Aged thirteen, Russell helped his brother Clancy, who worked for Thomas Bros, to tidy up the butcher shop and, in 1966, he began his apprenticeship with Jamieson’s Bakers which was on the corner of Moller and Mayers Streets. (The original building is still there). In those days, they didn’t bake on a Friday or Saturday night so it was a five day week. Jamieson’s was one of the last bakeries in Gordonvale with a brick oven.

Russell well remembers the times he and some of his friends swam in the Mulgrave River and “souvenired” delicious, juicy oranges from the trees next to the cane worker’s barracks on Waay’s farm. In 1969, Russell and his mates rode their bikes up to Ross and Locke for a camping trip. Being a boy who was bred on red meat he faced very serious deprivation for four days. As well, he was also a dedicated ice-cream fan.

Ivy Zappala...

CALTEX COMMUNITY CALENDAR

Historical Paintings that tell a story (Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) Ivy didn’t started art classes until the early 1970’s and has been painting ever since. Through her art she portrays people, places and poems of Far North Qld. She has won countless awards and has entered in many exhibitions locally, interstate and overseas. Ivy has done a painting of Private W.A (Bill) Warncke who was veteran of WW1 and a long term resident of Gordonvale and the Babinda area. The painting depicts the morning after the battle of Villers Brentonneaux, (a small town in France) which happened on 25th April 1918. The painting is hanging in the town of Villers Brentonneaux. Ivy and her family are long term members of the Bellenden Ker Rural Fire Fighters Brigade, one the smallest fire brigades in Australia. After the 911 tragedy in 2001 in New York, Ivy gifted a painting to the New York Fire-fighters, in honour of the lives that they saved and their tireless work comforting the dying and injured. One of Ivy Zappala’s paintings is hanging in Parliament House. This is her story. Ivy Zappala (nee Hanson), was born in Gordonvale Hospital in 1933. She was one of 8 children and grew up on piece of crown land along side the Mulgrave River. Life was simple then, but tough. Water for the house had to be carried up the hill from the river, in 4 gallon kerosene tins and Ivy’s Mum had to walk into Gordonvale to get meat and bread and had to carry it home in a sugar bag. The Hanson family were pretty well self reliant, as they had chooks, ducks and turkeys and had their own veggie garden and grew, potatoes, cabbage, tomatoes, lettuce, corn, bananas and paw paws. Even mangoes were well established as they had been planted years before by the Hindus who were cane cutting. The Mulgrave River was a central part of the family’s life, as they washed clothes in it, bathed in it, caught fish, shot wild ducks and enjoyed the fresh water swimming all year round. In the slack season, Ivy’s dad found it tough getting work. There were no government hand outs then. Tommy and Hughie Bryce of Bryce’s Store, (store front on Norman Street) let Ivy’s dad book things up and he paid it back once the cane cutting season started again. Ivy went to primary school in Gordonvale and travelled to Cairns to high school on the rail motor. After leaving school, she worked as a housemaid and domestic before marrying her husband Joe Zappala. They owned a small farm of 24 acres, and then went into share farming. In 1959 they bought their own farm at Pawngilly in the Babinda district. Then in 1965 they bought their present farm at Bellenden Ker. In 1992 Ivy painted a wall mural in the Mulgrave Settlers Museum of a rainforest backdrop 3m x 11m, which enhances the displays and brings the museum to life. The Mulgrave Settlers Museum is proud to be currently hosting an exhibition of Ivy Zappala’s paintings as well as a short DVD where Ivy describes each painting and talks about the reasons for painting them. The Museum is open Monday to Saturday 10.00am – 2.00pm. The Museum’s recent publication “From Plain Camp to Gordonvale”, a collection of articles and photographs from museum members, of when the Gordonvale area was referred to as “Plain Camp” and became Gordonvale is now available at the museum. We also have the recently published book, Gordonvale and the 503rd Parachute Regiment, a collection of articles and photographs of the American Parachute Regiment that was stationed in Gordonvale in 1942/43. Both these publications are $25.00 each.

Robyn’s Real Estate Read Welcome to this month's update on all things Real Estate. There seems to be a lot of positivity regarding our real estate prices in the last few weeks. The current median house price for Goldsborough has risen to $485,000.00 after many years in the doldrums. Gordonvale has been mentioned as a hot spot to invest in and land values have stayed the same over the past 12 months. Building Approvals have risen in Cairns by 38.6% to Nov 12 over the previous 12 months thanks in part to the State's Building Boost of $15,000.00 and this is seeing land being snapped up. For those of you hoping to sell to buy, especially when it comes to upsizing and downsizing, timing is crucial. I have quite a lot of experience in this type of sale so feel free to give me a call to discuss the different options. Robyn Hawley-Whitton - 0488 071 007 or E: robynhw@cpo.com.au
